lights from journey

Journey is an American rock band formed in 1973 in San Francisco by former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987, after which it temporarily disbanded. During that period, the band released a series of hit songs, including 1981's "Don't Stop Believin'", which became in 2009 the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history. Its parent studio album, Escape, the band's eighth and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, "Open Arms". Its 1983 follow-up, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band's ap… more »

  • Tobias from Walsrode , Germany Still I am very impressed , even After decades of Years passing by, my JOURNEY-cds are Constantly in the Air, just Discovered several YouTube-Videos.... to Continue ROCKING .... STAY HEALTHY!!
  • Terri from Long Beach, Wa This song was originally written by Steve Perry while he lived in Los Angeles. It wasn't quite right so he put it aside. When he joined Journey it came with him. Neal Schon helped to suggest some changes in the song that made it work. The rest is history.
  • Mary from Castle Rock, Co I love this song. I grew up listening to Journey in the 80's. When I graduated from High School we went for our Senior Trip to San Francisco and took a ride on of their bay area boats and OF COURSE they played this song...will never forget it. It brought me goosbumps. I can still remember who I danced this song with, that's how vivid my memories are of this song. Proud to be from the Bay Area!!! Love you Steve Perry!
  • Sandra from Gardnerville, Nv Hey James, San Jose, CA...Too funny! First, though...Steve Perry...What an incredible rock n' roll vocal! I love the song and the way he sang it! Anyway...While I heard the reference to this song/LA for the first time right here, I have to laugh about the SF Giants, thing. Although, I am a LA Dodgers Fan, I was in attendance to hear a friend of mine actually sing the National Anthem at Candlestick at an SF Giants game, (It was on the Fourth of July at a Giants/Dodger game. I don't remember what year for the life of me...details are sketchy...LOL), his elderly dad was there for it and it was a very special moment for all of us. Speaking of the SF Giants, I have a cute story about Will Clark and Mackey Sasser...
  • James from San Jose, Ca 3. And finally, while it's personally disappointing to learn about the "L.A." thing, I had a great "Lights" moment in San Francisco. I was at a Giant's game back when they played at Candlestick Park. It was July 4, but San Francisco weather, it was actually rainy. By the end of the game, the rain had turned to a mist, and as they prepared for the July 4 fireworks, they played Lights as they dimmed the stadium lights. I know it was planned that way, but with the mist and everything, it was just a beautiful moment that I'll never forget.
  • James from San Jose, Ca 2. lol Wish I could delete my last comment. Here is a 2nd Joe Benson interview with Steve Perry: http://steveperryfanclub.homestead.com/OffTheRecord.html The "L.A." claim is true, and it's about sunRISE on the Bay according to Perry. There you have it.
  • James from San Jose, Ca 1. Here's the Joe Benson interview with Steve Perry: http://steveperryfanclub.homestead.com/OffTheRecord3.html There is NOTHING about the song being written about L.A., so stop the rumors.
  • Jeff from Seal Beach, Ca I also heard the interview with joe benson on the radio in los angeles where steve perry mentions the lyrics originally were l.A., not the bay. He also mentioned other lyrics about lights referring to los angeles that he had to change to fit the s.F. Image..I love the song but it was originally about los angeles, not San Francisco
  • Teri from Ca., Ca In an interview with Joe Benson, Steve Perry talked about this song. Originally, he wrote this song about Los Angeles. The original lyrics said "when the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on L.A.". (The person(s) that mentioned this fact before was correct) When Steve joined Journey he changed it, removing the L.A. reference and added references to the bay area/San Francisco after driving across one of the bridges.
  • Beau from San Francisco, Ca So Steve Perry longs for San Francisco while he's in LA, but the distance doesn't make him forget that the San Francisco looks EAST over the bay. I have enjoyed many a sunrise and Steve describes the feeling spectacularly.
  • Brandon from Peoria, Il Actually if you think of the "lights going down" as the city's lights fading OFF. Then it makes sense. It would be refering to early morning in San Fransisco. BUT...since the sun rises in the EAST, the sun would not be coming up over the bay at the time...OKAY try this...Late evening, with the sun setting over the San Fransisco Bay and the city's lights coming ON just before dark...that sounds about right :)
  • Robert from San Francisco, Ca When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay. Doesn't happen very often but wouldn't trade it. Journey had it right - right Tilton.
  • Casey from Pensacola, Fl yep... he may have been in LA, but he says "I want to get back to my City by the bay" right in the lyrics. seems pretty clear to me...
  • Paul from Cincinnati, Oh I love this song. It always makes me feel sentimental.
  • Matthew from East Brunswick, Nj Terrific song, Excellent guitar riff. Journey rocks!
  • Becki from Hendersonville, Tn This song Is about San Francisco.I belong to a Steve Perry website and they have years of archives of interviews.Steve himself said it was about San Francisco.
  • Jennifer from San Antonoi, Tx Note to Emo in San Jose, the lyrics actually say: "When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the BAY..." not LA
  • Aj from Cleveland, Ga I also love the guitar solo.
  • Stefanie Magura from Rock Hill, Sc Well, I know the songs have different beats, but the beginning still sounds like something Hendricks would have done.
  • Stefanie Magura from Rock Hill, Sc great song! It's one of my favorites by them! I love the guitar solo. The beginning of the song sounds similar to the beginning of 'little Wing' by Jimi hendricks. Does anyone agree with me?
  • Emo from San Jose, Ca Reportedly, Steve Perry did in fact originally write the song in L.A. and the lyrics were something like "When the lights go down in the city and the sun shine on L.A...."
  • Tony from San Francisco, Ca This song may have been partially written IN L.A., but last time I checked, San Francisco was the city by the bay.
  • Josh from C.p, Mn the song was actually written about LA since steve wrote parts of it while he lived in LA
  • Chris from Aurora, Il Steve Perry has an amazing voice, and this is one of the songs that I listen to when I just get tired of bands who have talent, but still get airtime on the radio.

Journey's best.

go ahead. argue.

and, yes, it is about San Fran, but I'd like to think it's about my home town, sea-town.

I used to listen to this song every mourning on the ride to my daycare. And to me it's about Seattle. Thats my city, but now it had a greater meaning when I was all the way out in butt fucking Iraq fight a war. I come back in August 2003. Hey friends does that give a good enough instight for a great song.

This is a great song...one of my favorites. Joyrney is a good band. And with regards to that Los Angeles comment...I, too, must laugh. Everybody knows that San Francisco is the city by the bay.

@zacster He said it's definitely about LA but had to change the name when he got called to join the band. He wrote this song before he joined Journey<br /> <br /> hollywoodreporter.com/news/journeys-steve-perry-joins-eels-711540

actually, compuwiz is kinda right...Steve Perry originally wrote this song about LA, then had to change it when he joined Journey to make it about San Fran cuz that's where the rest of Journey was from...i got your back compuwiz!!

hell yeah CT man. I have great memories of hearing this song on the radio while driving up I-91 throught hartford. Not a city by the bay in any means, but its still a good feeling.

YES THIS SONG IS ABOUT SAN FRANSICO, NOT LOS ANGELES! A really great memory I have of this song is when I was a kid me and my family flew to San Fransico. It was at like 2:00 in the morning when the plane was about the hit the runway, and they played this song during the landing process. Since the airport is right in the bay, MAN the sight of the Golden Gate Bridge lit up with this song playing was so beatuiful, and at the same time so emontional. Passengers were crying, it definatley is something I will remember for ever. This song always cheers me up because it makes me think of that time. Steve Perry has a powerful, and heart touching voice.

This would be a great story, if you could actually see the GG bridge from the Airport!

The fact that one single radio standard Journey song could incite such heated debate is a major source of entertainment for me at this moment.

Sure, I am easily amused. Just as Compuwiz19 is positively weird. Whats next? The assertion by FaRvELvR1992 that its about green bay? Oh, wait. wouldnt want to give anyone any ideas...

Probably my favorite Journey song (just an inch above Separate Ways).

I always love thinking about how with a few judicious changes to the lyrics, it could really be a song about wanting to go home to any city. Yeah, I know it's about San Francisco, but it's nice to imagine it could be about Tampa, New York City, or even Hell, Michigan if one felt like it. That's how universal the sensibility it invokes is.

Even though this is about San Francisco, it was written in Los Angeles, where the band had relocated. Steve Perry explained in an interview with Joe Benson of Arrow 93.1 FM: "I had the song written in Los Angeles almost completely except for the bridge and it was written about Los Angeles. It was 'when the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on LA.' I didn't like the way it sounded at the time. And so I just had it sitting back in the corner. Then life changed my plans once again, and I was now facing joining Journey. I love San Francisco, the bay and the whole thing. 'The bay' fit so nice, 'When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay.' It was one of those early morning going across the bridge things when the sun was coming up and the lights were going down. It was perfect."

'City by the Bay' IS synonymous with San Francisco(Bay Area) and that's where Steve is from but this song can be interpreted as anyone's 'city by the bay'.

Trippy NASA Visualization Takes You on a Journey Through the Iconic Pillars of Creation

The visualization combined observations from different telescopes across different wavelengths of light.

The shimmery towers of cosmic dust and gas at the heart of the Eagle Nebula have inspired awe for decades since they were first captured by the Hubble telescope. Now, NASA released the most detailed visualization of the iconic celestial structure, revealing all of its dreamy features across multiple wavelengths of light.

Using data from the Hubble and Webb space telescopes, NASA astrophysicists have weaved together an unprecedented journey across the Pillars of Creation, traveling through the three-dimensional structure and revealing the clouds of dust and embedded stars that make up its finger-like features. The 3D visualization is based on observational data from a paper published in the Meteoritic & Planetary Science journal.

The 2.5-minute-video lets viewers experience the Pillars of Creation in both visible light, as captured by Hubble, as well as infrared light, captured by Webb. “By flying past and amongst the pillars, viewers experience their three-dimensional structure and see how they look different in the Hubble visible-light view versus the Webb infrared-light view,” Frank Summers, principal visualization scientist who led the movie development team for NASA’s Universe of Learning, said in a statement. “The contrast helps them understand why we have more than one space telescope to observe different aspects of the same object.”

The Hubble image of the Pillars is featured on the left while the Webb version is featured on the right.

The Hubble telescope sees objects that glow in visible light at higher temperatures. Webb’s infrared vision, on the other hand, is sensitive to cooler objects with temperatures of just hundreds of degrees. As a result, Webb is able to pierce through obscuring dust to see stars embedded in the pillars. Hubble views the pillars with dark brown, opaque dust, and bright yellow ionized gas against a greenish-blue background while Webb’s image features orange and orange-browndust that’s almost transparent with light blue ionized gas against a dark blue background.

The visualization also highlights several stages of star formation. At the top of the central pillar, there’s an embedded, infant protostar glimmering bright red in infrared light. Then, a diagonal jet of material ejected from a newborn star can be seen near the top of the left pillar. The jet indicates that a star is born, although we can’t see the star itself. Finally, a blazing, brand new star shines towards the end of one of the left pillar’s protruding fingers.

The Pillars of Creation stretch across roughly 4 to 5 light-years, a relatively small feature of the massive Eagle Nebula, which spans 70 by 55 light-years. The nebula is located 7,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Serpens, but it is so bright that it can be seen by a small telescope. Its pillars, meanwhile, were first made famous by Hubble in 1995 with a stunning debut that remains one of the most iconic astronomical images of all time.

“When we combine observations from NASA’s space telescopes across different wavelengths of light, we broaden our understanding of the universe,” Mark Clampin, director of the astrophysics division at NASA, said in a statement. “The Pillars of Creation region continues to offer us new insights that hone our understanding of how stars form. Now, with this new visualization, everyone can experience this rich, captivating landscape in a new way.”

Music Review: Johnny Cash's ‘Songwriter,' a collection of unreleased songs from 1993, is a journey

In 1993, Johnny Cash was between record contracts — and just about to embark on an iconic collaboration with producer Rick Rubin that would span the last 10 years of his life, starting with 1994’s “American Recordings.”

NEW YORK -- In 1993, Johnny Cash was between record contracts — and just about to embark on an iconic collaboration with producer Rick Rubin that would span the last 10 years of his life, starting with 1994's “American Recordings."

During that crucial time in his career, Cash immersed himself in crafting and recording original demos that showcased his songwriting prowess. Those songs, once set aside, will be released Friday as a complete album. Cash's son, John Carter Cash, stripped the recordings back to just his father's voice and acoustic guitar — and enlisted co-producer David “Fergie” Ferguson and some musicians his father previously worked with to round out the recordings.

Aptly titled “Songwriter,” the album features 11 tracks all penned by Cash. Just two tracks will be familiar to fans of the Rubin records: “Drive On” and “Like a Soldier” were previously released on “American Recordings.” While the Rubin renditions favored deeply-felt minimalism — just an acoustic guitar and Cash's idiosyncratic vocal tone — the “Songwriter” versions possess a more layered sound with additional instrumentation. Not better, just different.

Emphasizing Cash’s role as a songwriter, this collection exists in contrast to his typical albums or recorded live performances, which often blend his own compositions with other writer’s songs. This album allows listeners to appreciate Cash as a performer, composer and lyricist, highlighting a unique intersection of his artistic journey.

The previously released first single, the rockabilly infused “Well Alright,” exudes Cash’s unmistakable style to such a degree that it could have easily found a place alongside classics like “Big River." (In an alternative timeline, the track might appear in The Grateful Dead ’s repertoire back in the day — they've certainly covered many Cash songs.)

In whole, "Songwriter” provides insight into a short creative phase of Cash’s career that would become interrupted by a brilliant creative collaboration with Rubin. While not his most audacious work, “Songwriter” still serves as a poignant journey into a defining moment of Cash’s musical legacy. And who doesn't love to hear previously unheard material from the Man in Black?

It’s remarkable how quickly time flies. It feels like it was just yesterday that I accepted the gavel from Steve Baker ’84, MArch ’88 at the Alumni Leadership Conference (ALC). And alas, my term as the MIT Alumni Association president is fast drawing to an end. At the beginning of my tenure,  I reflected on how MIT is a magical place —and this year has only served to reinforce that belief. MIT will always be a place where brilliant minds conjure innovations that are nothing short of magical. Indeed, MIT transforms lives so that we can, in turn, transform the world.

Strengthening Connections, Across the Planet

This past year, as I engaged with alumni worldwide, I witnessed firsthand the transformative effect of MIT. As an international alum now residing in Australia, I made it my mission to connect with alumni wherever my travels took me, whether for work or leisure. This journey led me to meet a remarkable array of individuals: from innovators revolutionizing life sciences and machine intelligence to entrepreneurs launching ventures in space commercialization, planet decarbonization, and the distribution of plant-based meats to restaurants. I even met an author who wrote a book about rocks and minerals. I am profoundly grateful for these interactions with such inspiring individuals and am eager to see how their groundbreaking efforts will continue to shape our world.

-The  Alumni Leadership Conference : ALC is one of the cornerstone events on the Alumni Association calendar. This past year’s ALC felt electric as attendance returned to pre-Covid levels.

-Nobel achievements: The Nobel Prize was awarded to Professor Moungi Bawendi, a member of our chemistry faculty, serving as a reminder of the extraordinary intellectual environment that MIT fosters.

-Presidential Welcome Tour: Following her inauguration in May 2023, President Sally Kornbluth kicked off a series of events in New York City; San Francisco; Washington, DC; and London to connect with alumni. I even had the opportunity to host the fireside chat with the president in London. It was such a pleasure to see alumni from all over Europe come together for the occasion.

- The Climate Project at MIT : MIT announced a new plan following President Kornbluth’s call to the MIT community to mount a “bold, tenacious response” to the global threat posed by climate change. The plan states: “The goal is for MIT to become, within the next decade, one of the world’s most prolific and collaborative sources of technological, behavioral, and policy solutions for the global climate challenge.”

-The power of community: This year’s MIT 24-Hour Challenge , held on Pi Day, truly made history. The event not only surpassed previous fundraising records but also demonstrated the extraordinary generosity and engagement of our alumni community. The overwhelming support on this day highlighted the collective impact we can achieve when we come together.

A photo of MIT alum Robert Wickham carrying a gold mase and wearing graduation robes while leading commencement with MIT president Sally Kornbluth behind him

-2024 Commencement: Serving as the chief marshal at this year’s Commencement was a distinct honor. I especially enjoyed the  remarks of Noubar Afeyan PhD ’87 and his charge to the Class of 2024, saying “My wish for you, my fervent hope, is that you not only choose to accept impossible missions, you embrace them. Welcome long odds. Embrace uncertainty, and lead with imagination. Approach the unknown with the courage, the confidence, and the curiosity of an immigrant.”

-A celebration of lifelong bonds: This year’s 2024 Tech Reunions were a vibrant celebration, bringing together more than 3,300 alumni and guests on the MIT campus. It was a truly special experience to be part of this gathering. The highlight for me was the Cardinal & Gray Dinner Dance, where I had the joy of mingling with alumni who graduated over 50 years ago. Dancing with my wife, Kristin, among friends old and new, I was reminded of the enduring connections we share with MIT and each other—bonds that indeed last a lifetime.

A photo of MIT alum Robert Wickham dancing inside with other people around them dancing as well and a red jacket in the right foreground

-Navigating challenges with empathy: This year, like many other institutions, MIT felt the profound impact of the crisis in the Middle East, which resonated across our campus and throughout our alumni community. It was a privilege to listen to the diverse perspectives within our community and to facilitate open, respectful dialogues. Our constant aim has been to create a space where dialogue bridges differences, fostering a culture of mutual respect and learning. While there is still much to accomplish, these conversations are vital steps toward understanding and progress.

Looking Ahead with Gratitude and Hope

As I look to the future, I am filled with confidence that Natalie Lorenz Anderson ’84 will carry forward the presidency with distinction. Reflecting on a conversation with Dean of Admissions Stu Schmill ’86, I’m reminded of how MIT values excellence, resilience, and intellectual curiosity in its students. These qualities are not merely admirable traits; they are the essence of what it means to be an MIT alum.

This year has shown me that the relationships we forge through MIT are not fleeting but are lifelong bonds that sustain us, challenge us, and inspire us to keep reaching for those impossible missions. As I pass on this role, I carry with me not just memories of a year well spent but a renewed commitment to live out the values that MIT has instilled in us all.

Fauci Speaks His Mind on Trump’s Rages and Their ‘Complicated’ Relationship

In a new book, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci recounts a career advising seven presidents. The chapter about Donald J. Trump is titled “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not.”

A portrait of Dr. Anthony S. Fauci on a yellow backdrop.

By Sheryl Gay Stolberg

Sheryl Gay Stolberg covers health policy and politics.

Three months into the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Anthony S. Fauci was at home in northwest Washington when he answered his cellphone to President Donald J. Trump screaming at him in an expletive-laden rant. He had incurred the president’s wrath by remarking that the vaccines under development might not provide long-lasting immunity.

That was the day, June 3, 2020, “that I first experienced the brunt of the president’s rage,” Dr. Fauci writes in his forthcoming autobiography.

Dr. Fauci has long been circumspect in describing his feelings toward Mr. Trump. But in the book, “On Call: A Doctor’s Journey in Public Service,” he writes with candor about their relationship, which he describes as “complicated.”

In a chapter entitled “He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not,” Dr. Fauci described how Mr. Trump repeatedly told him he “loved” him while at the same time excoriating him with tirades flecked with four-letter words.

“The president was irate, saying that I could not keep doing this to him,” Dr. Fauci wrote. “He said he loved me, but the country was in trouble, and I was making it worse. He added that the stock market went up only 600 points in response to the positive Phase 1 vaccine news, and it should have gone up 1,000 points, and so I cost the country ‘one trillion dollars.’” (The president added an expletive.)

“I have a pretty thick skin,” Dr. Fauci added, “but getting yelled at by the president of the United States, no matter how much he tells you that he loves you, is not fun.”

The book, which will be released on June 18, traces the arc of Dr. Fauci’s life, from his boyhood in Brooklyn as a son of first-generation Italian Americans (his father was a pharmacist, and the family lived above the “Fauci Pharmacy”) through his 54-year career at the National Institutes of Health, 38 of them as the director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

It is 450 pages long, and Dr. Fauci devotes about 70 of them to the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, when Mr. Trump was in office. His criticisms of Mr. Trump and his White House are at times blunt and at other times oblique, leaving readers to draw their own conclusions.

Dr. Fauci served under seven presidents, shepherding the nation through infectious disease threats including AIDS, swine flu, anthrax and Ebola. But the coronavirus pandemic turned him into a polarizing public figure and a target of Republicans, particularly Mr. Trump’s most ardent supporters.

During a tense hearing this month before the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, Dr. Fauci forcefully denied Republican allegations that he had helped fund research that started the pandemic or had covered up the possibility that it originated in a laboratory. He called the accusations “absolutely false and simply preposterous.”

In Dr. Fauci’s telling, the Trump White House was different than any other he had experienced, not least because of its passing relationship with the truth. Mr. Trump, he wrote, “shocked me on Day 1 of his presidency, with his disregard of facts such as the size of the crowd at his inauguration” and his “aggressive disrespect for the press.”

Those differences extended to the relationship between Mr. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, the chairman of the White House coronavirus response task force.

“Vice presidents,” Dr. Fauci wrote, “are almost always publicly loyal to the president. That is part of the job. But in my opinion, Vice President Pence sometimes overdid it. During task force meetings, he often said some version of, ‘There are a lot of smart people around here, but we all know that the smartest person is upstairs.’”

Then, without explicitly saying Mr. Pence was referring to Mr. Trump, Dr. Fauci wrote, “He was of course talking about the man sitting behind the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office.”

Dr. Fauci also makes clear he had little use for some of Mr. Trump’s advisers: his chief of staff, Mark Meadows; his chief economic adviser, Peter Navarro; and his medical adviser, Scott Atlas. He said Mr. Trump’s aides were feeding negative stories about him to journalists in 2020.

“The growing White House hostility toward me over the spring and summer seemed to trigger at least in part the overt attacks on me by right-wing media and trolls using social media platforms,” Dr. Fauci wrote. That August, he opened a letter containing a “fine white powder” and “instantly feared anthrax or worse.” Hazmat teams were called into his office at the National Institutes of Health; a few days later, the F.B.I. confirmed the powder was harmless.

Dr. Fauci’s first encounter with Mr. Trump was before the coronavirus pandemic, at a White House ceremony where the president signed an executive order that called for improvements in the manufacturing and distribution of flu vaccines. After the event, Mr. Trump remarked to Dr. Fauci that he had never had a flu shot.

“When I asked him why, he answered, ‘Well, I’ve never gotten the flu. Why did I need a flu shot?’ I did not respond,” Dr. Fauci wrote. The implication was clear: The doctor was flabbergasted to discover that Mr. Trump knew so little about the purpose of vaccines.

On the morning of Jan. 29, 2020, Dr. Fauci wrote, the conservative political commentator Lou Dobbs, whom the doctor had known for years, called to say Mr. Trump wanted to meet him. Several hours later, Dr. Fauci found himself in the White House Situation Room, briefing the president and his top advisers on a new virus that was circulating in China. It was instantly clear to Dr. Fauci, the scientist from Brooklyn, that he and Mr. Trump, the president from Queens, could relate to each other in the way that only New Yorkers can.

“He had a New York swagger that I instantly recognized — a self-confident, backslapping charisma that reminded me of my days in New York,” Dr. Fauci wrote.

But that is where the kinship ended. Dr. Fauci wrote that when Mr. Trump embraced hydroxychloroquine , an anti-malarial drug, as a Covid treatment on the basis of anecdotal evidence, he realized that “sooner or later I would have to refute him publicly.”

He painted the president as consumed with television ratings and the economy; after one coronavirus briefing in March 2020, Mr. Trump summoned Dr. Fauci into the Oval Office and called the Fox News personality Sean Hannity. Dr. Fauci recalled the moment: “‘Hey, Sean,’ he said on speakerphone. ‘You should see the ratings we have!’”

Standout Fights

UFC on ESPN: Reyes vs Procházka (May 1, 2021)

If you didn’t know Jiří Procházka before this fight, you certainly did after his spinning back elbow put Dominick Reyes out cold in the second round. Procházka earned Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night honors for this win.

It was an action packed bout up until the knockout, as the two light heavyweights threw their heavy hands in the first round, each taking some damage. That momentum carried into the second round as they continued to battle. Midway through, Reyes hurt Procházka, but after he was able to escape a takedown attempt and throw some ground strikes, he threw the spinning back elbow and that left Procházka the clear winner.

UFC 275: Teixeira vs Procházka (June 12, 2022)

In just three UFC fights, Procházka became the light heavyweight champion of the world by defeating Glover Teixeira by rear naked choke in the fifth and final round.

Opinion | Abhinav Anne: 7 lessons from my journey in youth climate advocacy

Youth climate activists march from Trump Tower toward City Hall in the Loop on Oct. 7, 2019, in Chicago. (Camille Fine/Chicago Tribune)

As a student at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, I’ve always been drawn to scientific inquiry to understand the world around me. But it was during that protest, surrounded by fellow activists, that I realized the immense potential of youth-led movements. Since then, my path has taken me through various roles and experiences, all aimed at fighting for our planet.

In my role as director of research and chapters specialist at Climate Cardinals, I’ve worked to make the climate movement accessible to those who don’t speak English. Climate Cardinals, an international youth-led nonprofit, has more than 14,000 volunteers translating climate information into more than 100 languages. We’ve reached millions across 80-plus countries and created messengers sounding the alarm on our world’s greatest threat.

Around the same time, I became the at-large chair for the Chicago chapter of the Climate Reality Project. This role allowed me to bridge local activism with global initiatives. As a United Nations youth delegate and Global Goals ambassador for climate action and good health and well-being, I’ve had the honor of representing youth voices on a global stage. Attending conferences and engaging with world leaders have provided me with a platform to highlight the critical perspectives of young people.

These experiences, among others, have taught me that despite often being underrepresented in decisions, we youths have the ability to influence the world around us. Here are seven lessons I’ve learned from my journey in climate advocacy, which I hope will guide fellow young activists.

Age is just a number. Many people underestimate the influence youths hold, but our age is not a limitation; it’s a strength. We grasp the imminent and severe impacts of climate change, and we certainly won’t be the last generation to do so if there is no meaningful intervention. It’s important to remember that our voices are just as valid as those of older generations. Regardless of background, we all have an equal stake in our planet’s future, so my message to youths is: Be unapologetically you. Use your energy, persistence, passion and unique perspectives, which are invaluable.

Public speaking is powerful. Developing public speaking skills can significantly amplify your message. Whether you’re speaking at a school assembly, a local government meeting or a global conference, your words can inspire and mobilize others. When you speak from the heart about something as urgent as climate change, people listen. Share your story, present the facts and call others to action.

Protests are important but can sometimes be scary. Protests are a powerful way to draw attention to critical issues. They show solidarity, raise awareness and can lead to significant change. Participating in climate strikes and marches can help put pressure on policymakers and demonstrate our collective power. However, protests can also be intimidating and sometimes scary, so try to go with friends. Prepare by knowing your rights and have a plan in place for safety.

Make sure to join large communities of advocates. One of the most empowering aspects of climate advocacy is realizing that you are not alone. Joining larger communities of advocates allows us to combine our resources, share ideas and support each other.

Engage with policymakers.  Policymakers are elected to serve us, the people — not the other way around. They are accountable to us and entrusted with the responsibility to act in our best interests. To create lasting change, we need to influence those in power. Start by educating yourself about the political process and identifying key decision-makers. Write letters, attend town hall meetings and participate in lobbying efforts. When we mobilize and raise our voices, we remind them that their primary duty is to safeguard our future.

Take time for yourself. In your pursuit of change, it’s crucial to take time for yourself to prevent burnout. Activism can be emotionally and physically demanding, making self-care essential. Do things that help you relax — whether it’s reading a book, practicing yoga, spending time in nature or simply enjoying a quiet moment alone. By caring for yourself, you sustain your ability to fight for a better future.

We grow when we take risks. Being an advocate fosters personal growth. Through activism, you’ll develop valuable skills such as leadership, communication and resilience. Taking risks, such as speaking out at a large rally, challenging policymakers or launching a new initiative, can be daunting, but it’s through these bold actions that we grow the most. You’ll learn to navigate challenges, build relationships and inspire others.

The lessons I’ve shared here are drawn from my own journey, but they are universally applicable. Every voice matters. Our age, background and circumstances do not diminish the importance of our contributions.

As we write the next chapter of our story, let us create a world where every voice is heard, every life is valued and every ecosystem is protected. Let us use our pens with purpose today, knowing that we will shape the history books of tomorrow.

Let’s lead the change we wish to see because, together, we are unstoppable. Together, we can change the world.
