Ascolta questa pagina usando ReadSpeaker

This paper presents the results produced by the means of the first Italian Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), for the year 2010. They are highly recommended to evaluate the role that tourism sector performs in the entire economy, as well as to allow processing and comparison at an international level.

In 2010 the estimate of the value added produced by the tourism related industries is € 82.833 million, corresponding to the 6% of the total Italian value added.

The total internal tourism consumption amounts to € 114.016 million, mostly attributable to the Italian tourists (44,2% of the total), while international tourist flows accounting for 25,7%. The other components of tourism consumption, among which the use of second home for vacation, constitute 30,1% of tourist demand.

The Altagamma Foundation knows luxury. Particularly, Italian luxury. Since 1992, the organization has studied the high end Italian brands in fashion, design, jewelry, food, hospitality, automotive, yachts, and wellness. Their mission? To increase competitiveness of the high end industry, contributing to Italy's economic growth.

Released on June 25th, 2024, an Altagamma-Deloitte study of the Italian Nautical Industry revealed that the industry grew three times faster than Italy's GDP between 2012 and 2022, and that its overall impact is 2.7 times as much as its direct impact, six times greater than its employment impact.

Presented by Giovanna Vitelli, Vice President of Altagamma for the nautical sector, and Tommaso Nastasi, Senior Partner of Deloitte, the study pointed to steps the industry might take to grow those numbers even bigger. President of Altagamma Matteo Lunelli was also present. Vitelli is also Chair of the Azimut|Benetti group, a top yacht builder both in Italy and around the world.

The Italian Nautical Industry

Not only is yachting a huge economic force in Italy, it also employs 157,000 people. Looking at the industry with an eye toward growth opportunities and its value chain, there are some interesting numbers that shape the discussion.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Italian new build production represents 50 percent of the global superyacht portfolio. Think professional services requiring highly technical knowledge and expertise generating €11.4 billion ($12.2 billion) and engaging more than 54,000 employees, directly, indirectly, and in satellite functions.

Yachts and marine tourism boast attraction that brings €16.3 billion ($17.5 billion) and 103,000 people to the sector. The yachts come for the international scene as well as manufacturing excellence in refits, accounting for one-third of on-the-ground tourism spending.

The report found that a main expansion area for yachting revolves around development of marinas. Analysis found that just 30 percent of available berths in Italy are located in marinas that are able to receive yachts and superyachts with appropriate technical facilities and interesting tourism opportunities.

Bigger Yachts Make Bigger On-Ground Impacts

The study found that yachts over 18 meters make up 65 percent of the total economic impact, 80 percent of which is in shipbuilding. While this sector only owns 2 percent of the yachts visiting Italy, it spurs 55 percent of the downstream value coming from the use of the yachts.

Additionally, on the ground spending related to large yachts, of which only 6.5 percent sail under an Italian flag, averages 26 times greater than the average across the nautical sector. Analysis revealed large yachts registered in Italy, crewed by Italians, visiting the coastline for at least 10 weeks per year, delivers a €1.6 million ($1.7 million) overall contribution. Encouraging more yachts to visit will have obvious benefits.

In 2022, the world's superyacht fleet, embracing those greater than 24 meters, reached 6,400. Approximately 30 percent, or 2,000, visited the Italian coasts. That superyacht sector forms the highest spending segment across multiple goods categories, with yachts greater than 24 meters spending €10-100K ($11-108K) and yachts over 60 meters spending five times that.

Altagamma Recommendations

Presented by Joanna Vitelli, the organization suggested working to bring yacht charter VAT rates in line with those charged by tourism and hotels. They also suggested updating regulations and procedures to encourage more robust Italian flag registration.

About Altagamma

The organization has an impressive member list, embracing brands from Alfa Romeo and Brioni, to Gucci, Riva, and Versace, with a partners list that includes such august names as American Express, Bain & Co, JPMorgan, and Pirelli.

Every year, the group researches eight areas, producing the full study reports to members only, with abstracts and outlines distributed to others. The reports are based on supply and demand through an in depth look at consumption, consumer profiling, digital, retail, and specific products, arriving at forecasts and analysis valuable to luxury retail brands around the world while remaining steadfast ambassadors of Italian style.

Virgin Galactic reports successful first commercial spaceflight with 3 Italian specialists

italy tourism satellite account

A crew of three specialists from Italy boarded a rocket plane Thursday bound for the edges of space in the first commercial flight for billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic space tourism company.

The two Italian Air Force officers and an aerospace engineer from the National Research Council of Italy successfully embarked on 90-minute flight to conduct a series of suborbital scientific experiments, the company said in a media release . The crew was joined by a Virgin Galactic astronaut instructor and the spaceplane's pilots for a flight dubbed Galactic 101.

The mission represents the dawn of commercial space travel for private citizens with deep pockets who can afford the hefty $450,000 price to purchase a ticket aboard one of Branson's rockets. Now that the scientific excursion was completed above the New Mexico desert, commercial space flights for ticket holders will begin in August and continue monthly, the company has said .

How to re-watch the launch

Virgin Galactic offered a livestream of the spaceflight on its website, virgingalactic.com .

The livestream remains available for those interested in viewing the launch.

Who was on board?

The crew consisted of two members of the Italian Air Force: Col. Walter Villadei , who wore a smart suit to measure his biometric data and physiological responses; and Lt. Col. Angelo Landolfi , a physician who conducted tests to measure cognitive performance and how liquids and solids mix in microgravity.

Pantaleone Carlucci , an engineer with the National Research Council of Italy, also was aboard to conduct tests that involved wearing sensors to examine his heart rate, brain function and other metrics.

Colin Bennet , a Virgin Galactic astronaut instructor who carried out the training and preparation for the mission, also flew with the crew.

The crew took off aboard the VSS Unity, which is piloted by Mike Masucci and Nicola Pecile, according to Virgin Galactic.

'Internet apocalypse': How NASA's solar-storm studies could help save the web

Launch is culmination of years-long billionaire space race

The launch occurred amid a years-long billionaire space race that has seen Branson competing with the likes of Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin to take civilians to space.

Branson himself was aboard a 2021 test flight, the completion of which led the the Federal Aviation Administration to ground Virgin Galactic for 11 weeks and conduct an investigation amid concerns that the rocket deviated off-course.

Two years later, Virgin Galactic  completed its final test flight on May 25, landing at Spaceport America in southern New Mexico after a short flight to space that included a few minutes of weightlessness.

"We're honored to have been selected by the Italian Air Force and the National Research Council to support their first space research mission," Virgin Galactic CEO Michael Colglazier said in a statement. "Virgin Galactic's research missions will usher in a new era of repeatable and reliable access to space for government and research institutions for years to come."

Tourism creates benefits such as foreign revenue, business development and employment opportunities for host countries. Although, alongside other impacts, there are many hidden costs of tourism to the host community such as leakages. Developed countries are often better able to profit from tourism than underdeveloped and developing ones because of high leakages in these countries. For a sustainable and healthy tourism development, it is an important issue to measure tourism industry’s contribution and leakages. Tourism satellite accounting can be a method to overcome this problem. In this study, Turkish and foreign literature has been examined, economic impacts of tourism, concept, importance and dimensions of leakages and value added are introduced and as a new concept for Turkey, Tourism Satellite Account is explained.

This article puts forward an analysis of the first Tourism Satellite Account compiled for the Maltese economy. The resulting Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) compiled for Malta adheres to the European System of Accounts (2010) and is based on the reference year of 2010. It reveals that tourism’s direct contribution to Malta’s GDP is around 6.1% and that the tourism sector directly employs 8.0% of the total population of gainfully occupied persons (employed or self-employed). Both the symmetrical approach and a variant of the net ratio approach are utilised to derive the tourism value added and tourism gross domestic product. The contribution of tourism to the local economy during 2010 is on par with that of what are generally considered to be the key sectors in Malta, however, the direct contribution to GDP is significantly lower than the estimates presented from past studies. The results presented in the article can be of significant use to further understand the various dimensions ...

This paper refers to the adaptation process of national Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA) to a sub-national level, as well as to the encountered obstacles and the particularities of such a venture. It briefly examines the case of Crete island in Greece, describing a particular methodological approach for the empirical evaluation of tourism consumption by forms of tourism markets in terms of their particular consumption patterns (e.g. leisure tourism, rural tourism e.t.c.), which can be integrated into the TSA framework.

Journal of Travel Research

The article introduces an integrated market-segmentation and tourism yield estimation framework for inbound tourism. Conventional approaches to yield estimation based on country of origin segmentation and total expenditure comparisons do not provide sufficient detail, especially for mature destinations dominated by large single-country source markets. By employing different segmentation approaches along with Tourism Satellite Accounts and various yield estimates, this article estimates direct economic contribution for subsegments of the UK market on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Overall expenditure across segments varies greatly, as do the spending ratios in different categories. In the case of Cyprus, the most potential for improving economic contribution currently lies in increasing spending on “food and beverages” and “culture and recreation.” Mass tourism therefore appears to offer the best return per monetary unit spent. Conducting similar studies in other destinations co...
