Your guides are experts at tracking the animals in every area, but which animals you see, when, and what they’re up to is as wild as the savanna itself. Travelling solo? On our treks we’ll match you with another traveller of the same gender so that you won’t be charged anything extra for the vast majority of our treks. If you prefer a guaranteed single room on tour we can also arrange that for a small additional charge.

On a continent rich in wildlife and cultural diversity that is famed for its spectacular landscapes, the importance of sustainable travel is high. While we aim to minimise our impact on the natural environment by practicing the '7 Principals of Leave No Trace', our adventures support local economies by employing guides and staff from local communities. Our Animal Welfare Code of Conduct, Child Welfare Code of Conduct and Porter Welfare Policy ensure the well-being of animals and children we encounter, as well as the porters we employ on Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Mount Kenya and in the Ruwenzori Mountains.

In cities and large towns you will be accommodated in 3-4 star properties that are generally centrally located, atmospheric and reliable and where we have seen a good track record with traveller satisfaction over many years. At times, accommodation will be chalet style with a bedroom and bathroom attached to a lounge area. Very occasionally, hotels may have shared bathroom facilities.

Safari lodges

In game parks, national parks and rural locations we use properties that reflect the character of the area. They are generally one storey high and will be a collection of individual bungalows or a series of adjoining rooms, based around a central main dining/lounge area.

Luxury safari lodges

Luxury lodges differ to standard safari lodges in that they feature extra facilities such as swimming pools, satellite TVs or rooms with private balconies. You will find this type of accommodation in East Africa at Serene Lodges and at boutique, 4-5 star lodges in Southern Africa.

Found in Morocco, a riad is a traditional house often located in the ancient medina (walled city) and usually includes an internal courtyard with a garden or water feature. Generally all rooms are a different shape and size, adding to the character. Riads range from elaborate traditional tiled decor to ultra modern furnishings.

A homestay describes any stay with a local family where we share their current home. Sleeping arrangements may be dormitory style and bathroom facilities will generally be shared. The standard is often basic but the experience is unbeatable.

Permanent safari camps

The perfect way to experience Africa wilderness; think of this as a tented hotel. Rooms are individual tents with built-in floors, doors and windows and include an en suite bathroom. Tents are usually placed on a solid structure and may also be sheltered under a solid roof. Guest tents are generally clustered around a main central dining/lounge area and power is either solar or by generator.

Luxury permanent safari camps

A luxury permanent safari camp differs to a standard permanent safari camp in that they feature extra facilities such as swimming pools, satellite TVs or rooms with private balconies; all with premium views.

Bedouin camps

Found in desert regions in North Africa and the Middle East, these are permanent safari camps using traditional Bedouin tents and decor. Bathroom facilities may be basic as water is scarce in the desert. Power is limited to specific hours of the day and is usually by generator when available. Kerosene lanterns or candles provide night time lighting, adding to the ambience.

Camping refers to any accommodation using mobile tents, ranging from large dome tents to small trekking tents. The local camp crew erects the tents or, on a limited participation safari, guests are expected to assist with this process. Group camping equipment (dining tent, kitchen tent, toilet tent) is supplied. Bathroom facilities are shared, and on rare occasions, bush toileting may be required.

Mountain huts

Mountain huts can be considered camping in a basic shelter. These generally consist of dormitory rooms with shared bathroom facilities and in the majority of cases are not exclusive to World Expeditions guests. Some mountain huts have cooking facilities that will be used by your crew; others have separate shelters for this.

Elias Berehe

Elias has a degree in Education and previously worked as a teacher, however his passion for travel and learning new things saw him change careers and attain his tour guide diploma six years ago. He has a friendly and sensitive nature and enjoys sharing his extensive knowledge of the cultural, social and historical gems of Ethiopia.

Victor Kombe

Victor was born in the heart of Kilimanjaro and has been a safari guide for eight years. Tracking wild animals is in his blood and he has an intimate knowledge of all the wildlife, from the smallest insect to the largest predators. The big cats are his particular favourites, especially the elusive leopard which Victor describes as "an animal work of art".

January B Kayombo

January has been working 14 years as a driver-guide in Tanzania, with his favourite being the Serengeti National Park. He is a keen wildlife enthusiast with a passion for bird watching, flora and fauna. January's favourite animals are all the big cats, and favourite bird is the Didric Cuckoo. January's knowledge, skills and experience make him very popular with clients.

Anjela Tumaini

Anjela is one of our female guides on Kilimanjaro, breaking stereotypes in this male dominated field. She first worked as a porter in 2012 and in the same year made her first summit ascent and obtained her guides license. Anjela has completed the National Parks and First Aid courses. She enjoys meeting clients from all around the world and encouraging them to reach the summit.

Ian Williams

Ian lives and breathes the bush and is known as the "Africa Guru". It would be a hard task to determine where Ian has not travelled in Africa over the past 40 years! He is a keen photographer and is passionate about all things African. His in-depth knowledge is integral to the itineraries he organises for our Africa private and school groups.

Kembo Sithole

Starting life as a bank teller in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Kembo saw the light and began his safari career in Hwange National Park in 1998. Since then he has grown to become one of our most popular Southern African guides. He has vast knowledge of fauna and flora and this with his excellent manner with people ensures he brings that something extra to our guests’ safari experience.

Phumuzile Ncube

Phumuzile was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, and moved to South Africa to work in the hospitality industry and learn more about his passion for wildlife and nature. His love of the local cultures, beauty of nature and sense of humour make Phumuzile an excellent guide for Southern African safaris. In his spare time, he loves supporting local football.

George Griffiths

George first started working as a guide in Namibia in 2006 and soon became a very much loved guide. His bright and friendly personality plus his years of experience make George a sought after guide, and his ability to speak many of the local languages opens up doors when you travel with him.

Clive Dougherty

Growing up in the Kenyan bush has inspired Clive to seek out East Africa’s greatest adventures. From the summit of Mt Kenya and the Ruwenzori Mountains to the plains of the Masai Mara, his rapport with fellow Africans and local knowledge ensure that our trips in East Africa offer an exceptional insight into the cultures, wildlife and environments of the region.

Thierry Andrianirinantenaina

Thierry has been an adventure guide for the past 14 years. The chameleon is his favourite animal due to its ability to adapt to the environment. His experience and love of diverse local cultures and natural environments makes him an excellent and highly experienced guide for our Madagascar and Mauritius adventures.

Youssef Elouali Kaissar

Youssef is a Berber from the High Atlas Mountains. He studied at Marrakesh University before completing his mountain guide qualification in 1994. While his love for the mountains is unmistaken, Youssef is also highly regarded for his extensive knowledge of the imperial history of Morocco. The union of the two also makes Youssef an ideal guide to develop new treks and tours for our travellers.

John Sempele

John, a Masai born in the region between Aberdare and Mount Kenya, is a popular safari guide best known for guiding on foot safaris in remote and beautiful corners of Kenya. His favourite is the climb on Mount Kenya with its lobelia strewn valleys. He has led many traditional safaris and has the innate ability – from a childhood in the bush – to read animals movements, a good skill when on foot!

Jackson Odhiambo

Jackson is from a small village on the shores of Lake Victoria, Western Kenya. He has always admired East Africa’s environment and wildlife. Following in his uncle's footsteps, he has put his passion to good use. Jackson became a driver and guide more than a decade ago and has clocked more than 500,000kms. He is a member of the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association.

Gesine (Gus) Cheung

From Cairo to the Cape and beyond, Gus’ travels have taken her to the roof of Africa (Kilimanjaro), the ‘Big 5’ in South Africa, Tanzania's annual migration, Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Rwanda's Mountain Gorillas, Namibia, Zanzibar’s beaches, majestic Victoria Falls, Morocco, Turkey, Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Oman and Jordan. Gus’ usual mode of transport is her own two feet, so don’t be surprised if you see her out on an African trail sometime.

Dr Ross Anderson

Dr Anderson lives with his wife in a small town near the Lakes District in the north of England. He is a family doctor and spends much of his spare time travelling as an expedition doctor. He has more than 10 years of altitude and travel medicine experience. Previous treks and expeditions have focused on the Himalayas, with others in the Scandinavian Arctic and mountainous areas of Africa. He also enjoys trail running, cycling and open-water swimming.

What people love about Africa Tours

This tour exceeded our expectations. We were met and greeted at every point of the journey, everything run to clock work and there was no delays in pick ups. We covered an amazing amount of ground and the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. Nothing was impossible, all requests were met and in fact on many occasions the tour guides / operations people on the ground went the extra mile without being asked. In regard to safety there was never an occasion we were in doubt, and in fact went out shopping on our own. We found the local people in hotels and in the public extremely friendly and respectful. Local vendors when told "No Thank you" they left you alone. the tour guides were a lot of fun and explained subject matter, culture and history brilliantly. They all are considered personal friends and would be all welcome in our home back in Melbourne Australia. We developed a wonderful relationship with truly caring and kind people.

Being a once in a lifetime travel destination, one has high expectations for the tour. I am really happy to say the tour exceeded my expectations. Pick up from Cairo Airport went smoothly. The person collecting me got in contact the day before and kept in touch all the way to the actual pick up. The pre-tour hotel was great. Our first guide in Cairo, Abdou was fantastic. He has a background in archaeology and was able to share all his knowledge about Egyptian history. He also provided an excellent commentary about the important artifacts in the Egyptian Museum. The next day our flight from Cairo to Luxor was delayed around 4 hours. Learnt that the airline, Air Cairo was not the most punctual airline. The tour company advised that they were going to stop using Air Cairo and indeed we had a smooth flight back to Cairo on Air Egypt. After arriving in Luxor, we boarded the MS Princess Sarah for a 5 night cruise. The ship was 5* and the food/service were great. However, our 2nd guide for Luxor was disappointing. He only provided a brief explanation at each site and sent us off for "free time" photos. Upon providing this feedback to the tour operator, they immediately organised a replacement guide for the rest of the tour. The replacement guide, Nesrin was excellent. She was able to provide a detailed explanation and walked with us at each historical site and available to answer all questions. For our flight back we had a guide to accompany us through Awsan Airport. He even organised for us to bypass the long check in lane so that we could have a quick check in. Overall, I was really impressed with the tour operator. They listened to and were proactive in fixing our issues. They even refunded part of our tour fee due to our issue with the Luxor tour guide and organised a surprise upgrade for our final night hotel stay in Cairo. I high recommend this tour due to its comprehensive coverage of all the important sites and tour company who really cared about the quality of their product.

Located in the captivating and vastly diverse East African country of Tanzania, the magnificent mountainous marvel that is Mount Kilimanjaro is not only the highest mountain peak in Africa, but the largest free-standing mountain rise in the world (this means that Kilimanjaro does not form part of a mountain range, but instead, stands entirely alone – tall, grounded, strong, independent, fierce & free), standing tall at a staggering +/- 5,895 meters / 19,341 feet above sea level.

Its prestigious high-rise status paired with the fact that it is without a doubt one of the most phenomenal natural wonders and breathtaking mountains in all of Africa, not to mention a once-in-a-lifetime adventure experience, has made standing on the peak of the world’s tallest freestanding mountain one of the top experiences on countless adventure travellers’ bucket-lists – with good reason too! For many, summiting Mount Kilimanjaro is so much more than ticking a thrilling experience off their Africa adventure bucket list – It’s a yearning for the Roof of Africa. An unstoppable hunger for conquering Uhuru Peak (the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro), and a craving for the raw, real, rugged, and once-in-a-lifetime adventure that  ONLY  a Mount Kilimanjaro climb can provide.

Also called a  stratovolcano  (a term used to describe a very large volcano made of ash, lava, and rock), Kilimanjaro is essentially a dormant volcano made up of three cones visible from miles away: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Kibo is the summit of the mountain and the tallest of the three volcanic formations. While Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, Kibo is dormant, however, the possibility that it could potentially erupt again is there. Before your head starts spinning and you fall down a deep & dark rabbit hole, to help set your mind at ease, scientists estimate that the last time Mount Kilimanjaro erupted was 360,000 years ago. So, while there is a possibility, the likelihood is incredibly slim. The highest point on Kibo’s crater rim is called Uhuru, the Swahili word for “freedom.” The mountain is also known for its snow-capped peak; however, scientists warn that the snow might disappear within the next 20 years or so – which is nothing short of tragic. But, if there’s one thing that is, and will forever remain true, irrespective of everything, it’s the undeniable and breathtaking natural beauty of the one and only Mount Kilimanjaro along with its snow-capped peaks, lush forests, and sweeping views that are simply unparalleled. There truly is nothing quite like it – and we dare you to prove us otherwise!

According to Tanzania National Parks, Mount Kilimanjaro attracts about 50,000 climbers a year, which is roughly 50 times the number of people attempting either Everest or Denali (formerly Mount McKinley) in Alaska. And, while Kilimanjaro ranks high on the to-do list of serious mountaineers, scaling the 5,895-metre (19,341 ft) dormant volcano requires no serious technical skill and is considered ‘doable’ for anyone with a moderately high fitness level.

But do not be fooled into thinking that it will be a walk in the park. Oh no! Kilimanjaro treks can take anywhere from 5 to 7 days depending on the route & when / what time of year you decide to climb it. Over the years, new routes and camps have helped lengthen and flatten the ascent, as well as provided more opportunities for climbers to acclimatize. But as far as high-altitude trekking goes, Kilimanjaro is definitely one of the highest ascents that can be completed in such a short period of time.

However, high altitude and low success rates shouldn’t deter you. With the right level of preparation Kilimanjaro can be safely conquered by those up for the challenge.

**When is the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro? Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an adventure of a lifetime, and one that should not be taken lightly. To ensure you have the best experience possible, it is important to know when the best time to climb Mount Kilimanjaro is as it can have a major impact on your overall climbing experience. While it is entirely possible to climb Mount Kilimanjaro right throughout the year, certain months and seasons are far better than others. That being said –  The two main Kilimanjaro trekking seasons  are between  January – March  and  June – October   (Dry Season).

Many deem the  dry season (June – October)  to be the very best time of year to climb Mount Kilimanjaro as the weather is generally dry and sunny with clear views, blue skies and temperatures ranging from the low 50s to the low 70s. This makes for ideal climbing conditions, as the trails that lead to the summit are not muddy, largely due to the low rainfall during this time, and the temperatures are just right. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro during its dry season (June – October) is also a great time if you want to  catch a glimpse of the Great Wildebeest Migration  as well as enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape while you ascend.

**Tip:  While the months of June – October are considered the best time of year to climb Mount Kilimanjaro (as this period is the driest and warmest months of the year), it is important to note that the weather can be unpredictable. Due to the often-unpredictable weather patterns it is crucial to always be ready and prepared for all types of weather conditions that may come your way.

The  January – March  season is  often colder and snowier  than June – October, but it is  less popular with tourists  as the latter corresponds with summer holidays. During the  wet seasons (April to May and November to December) , the mountain can be extremely slippery, with frequent rains / storms and mudslides, making the climb much more challenging and dangerous. However, some people still choose to climb the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro during the wet season as it can offer unique views and experiences. This especially applies to experienced and highly skilled climbers.

If you want to avoid the large crowds of people that climb during  high season (June to September) , make sure you book your trek between December and March. However, you will find that the weather is colder in the evenings during that period. You will also encounter snow on the summit as well as a little rain along the way.

#11 Visit Cape Town’s famous Boulders Beach & its thriving colony of African Penguins

#12 Sleep outside under the stars in Botswana’s Makgadikgadi Pans

Botswana is not only regarded as one of the most exclusive and widely acclaimed safari destinations in Africa, but one of the most remarkable wilderness areas on earth too. Canoe in the Okavango Delta

Where we stay on safari.

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

How we get around

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

When is the best time to go on safari.

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colours is the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our ultimate Africa packing guide . 

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. 

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water). 

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

This world and the animals that call it home are precious, and we believe it’s our responsibility to help preserve them. We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance. 

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

Everything was perfect and so authentic sleeping in tents and being able to contribute so you weren’t just a guest on tour - that made it feel like YOUR tour. My husband and I are in our early 30s and joined Acacia Africa in February in Nairobi for the ‘28 days overland experience’... I went overlanding in Africa fully expecting to be on ‘Africa time’ – but we were very rarely delayed and managed to have time to do all of the activities we had picked this trip to do... Our guides stopped along the way to buy local produce from people selling on the road which we fully supported and felt we were properly supporting the local population during the trip. It was a very cost-efficient trip leaving lots of cash over for the activities... The wildlife encounters on the trip were phenomenal – we spent the whole time thinking we were on a David Attenborough show! This trip truly shows Africa at its very best.

I just finished the 58-day Nairobi to Cape Town Ultimate African Overlander, camping the whole way down, and it was the GREATEST experience of my life... Our tour leader Pete and driver Francis were some of the nicest and funniest guys I had the pleasure of travelling with - and fantastic cooks! - as were Justin and Ali after our change of leadership in Livingstone. They offered a wealth of information at any time requested, and went a long way in making the tour even more incredible... I could never put in words just how fantastic this tour is, so suffice to say that if you’re looking for a change from your day-to-day life, if you somehow managed to get 2 months off work to travel, if you’re willing to let go of luxury and embrace simplicity, then don’t even hesitate about it and GO FOR IT!

AMAZING EXPERIENCE! We travelled with Acacia for 12 days; from Livingstone in Zambia, through Botswana and to Swakopmund in Namibia. It was a great trip, amazing adventures & memories for life. The guide and driver was local, telling stories about life in Africa, and those are the things that you really remember. Travelling to Africa for the first time, it was a great way to combine nature, culture and the different aspects of three countries. Will definitely recommend this tour if you enjoy outdoor- life and are not afraid to sleep in a tent, sometimes with elephants walking around and the sound of a hippo close by. Fantastic experience in an amazing continent.

Highlights of Tanzania 2019! I highly recommend booking an African tour through Acacia Africa. As a young, solo, female traveler I felt comfortable and safe the entire trip. Our lead guide Moyenda is an asset to the Acacia team, he is kind, knowledgeable, patient and funny. Our drivers Gledman and Clement were also incredibly kind and funny. The accommodated hotels were fantastic and the campsites were also very nice. I booked the camping option for the trip but was able to upgrade to a hotel room for a very reasonable price at each stop if I wanted (except the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, obviously). Zanzibar and Kendwa beach were spectacular and almost all of the excursions were fantastic. I’ve made so many friends on this trip and am so grateful for Acacia and their Africa expertise :)

A trip to Africa with Acacia was an unforgettable adventure of a lifetime! I have been to Africa before and I travelled to Southern Africa in 2015, and as the saying goes - once you go to Africa you never go just once. I went on this particular tour to tick off all the gems of East Africa in one go and the 36 days Rivers, Lakes and Mountains camping tour was unlike any other trip I had done before. I was apprehensive to say the least. However - it surpassed all expectations I had of a camping trip. The guides were so patient and helpful getting us set up and feeling comfortable. WOULD DO IT AGAIN! Loved everything. The food that Eva and Crispy served was divine every night! The campsites had amazing views. It's important to keep in mind to get places you have to ride on the truck - so you're on the road a lot but it's part of the experience. Definitely worth the money and would do a longer tour next time! We were very fortunate to have a cool diverse group of 13 mostly in the 20's so we all got along really well. Thanks Acacia!

AMAZING! I had the most incredible time overland trucking with Acacia Africa. The tents are easy if you aren’t accommodated, the food cooked by our wonderful tour leader Joe was phenomenal and our driver Phillip was just the funniest guy ever. I did a 34-day tour from Zanzibar to Livingstone, which I loved. There are lots of great activities to do along the way, and while you do spend some long periods on the truck there are two tables and you’re able to do lots with those you travel with such as cards, chess, games. There’s also a speaker on the truck that we were all able to listen to music here and there on. I never minded the long trips, and it was great meeting so many wonderful people along the way whom I will miss dearly. There is an age limit as well which I liked, being young I wanted to be with others who were also “younger” as well. Each group I travelled with had a range of 19-39 and we all got along so well. I personally highly recommend travelling with Acacia Africa if you’re looking for a tour to go with.

I just got back from the Desert and Delta Express Northbound (12-day) route and I am happy with the tour overall. I enjoyed the camping and the tents and campsites were all good. You also could upgrade at most places if you ever needed. Breakfast/lunch was very basic and got a bit redundant (cereal/toast/sandwiches), but dinners were delicious usually something grilled at the campsite! We did make plenty of stops to restock on water and snacks. This was a participation tour, and we all rotated jobs between packing the truck, cleaning the truck, washing up, and cooking. I liked pitching in, but of course you have those that don't. Keep in mind this is an overland tour so you will have long days in the truck (with no a/c), and you just have the bare minimums! We did a lot of game drives and saw plenty of animals!...

This was an amazing experience, exploring Botswana with a great group of 10 people for 7 days. We had some fantastic moments, watching the elephants cross the river in Chobe, seeing the milky way and the planets in the crystal clear Okavango night sky, watching the giraffes in the Khama Rhino Sanctuary, seeing bush babys scamper down the trees at one of the lodges, doing the flight over the Okvango delta, playing volleyball with the group at Maun, and much more. There was a lot of driving, some of it on pretty bumpy roads, and some of the accommodation is pretty basic, but its all worth it for the amazing things you see the brilliant people you meet and the memories you make. Also the bus was actually very spacious and air conditioned, and our guides Simon and Servius were very knowledgeable, incredible helpful and professional, both of which helped enormously to make the experience so good.

It was my first tour with Acacia, but maybe not the last one. I did the tour from Livingstone to Swakopmund and really liked the set of the tour: it was a combination of a lot of different experiences: Vic Falls, Safaris, Okavango Delta and then the desert in Namibia. Our driver and guide were both very professional, enthusiastic, but also funny and we all had a great time. I can highly recommend it!

I did this trip as a solo female traveller as part of a 18-39 tour. My group size varied from 10 to 19 people, and consisted of a great mix of ages, nationalities, and travel experience. I did the tour as a camper, and so I was in a tent most nights - the tents provided are sturdy and well suited to the climate, and all of the campsites were very good, most of them having hot showers, electricity, and basic wifi. The Acacia bus was secure, comfortable, and well equipped. All of my guides and drivers were absolutely lovely people, who obviously love their jobs and are passionate about everything that Africa has to offer. All in all, I will certainly be using Acacia again!

It's great value for your money, and if your trip is anything like ours, you'll see incredible things, spend time with wonderful people, and learn lots from some of the best guides your could ever ask for. Special shout out to Jack (Moyenda) and Masai (Paul) our guides from Cape Town to Livingstone, who made living in tents and riding a big truck with 22 people some of the best times we've had. Don't worry about it being a participation tour--that really just means you'll help pack up the chairs from around the campfire, might cut up some vegetables, and will take a few turns cleaning some of the cookware. If you're not uniquely lazy, you'll probably even enjoy the few assigned tasks which help bond the group--especially the dance of the dishes. A few tips: pack light (you don't need that many sets of clothes), bring warm clothes for the chilly nights if you're there in winter (the right clothes and a good blanket make all the difference), buy yourself a good pillow when you arrive (you can donate it at the end), plan to do some of the optional activities (almost all of them were worth it), and keep in mind that you'll see some incredible places that you'll certainly feel the need to come back to for a longer stay. Also, the food is incredible, so don't worry about that. Plus, the toilets, showers, and wifi were generally clean, hot, and working adequately where that was advertised.

I just travelled through East Africa with Acacia Adventures and it’s been one of the best trips of my life. The guides throughout the trip were fantastic, being both hospitable and knowledgeable. The truck was spacious and comfortable and the lockers at the back for our bags were super convenient. The tents were easy to put up and pack up. The food was AMAZING! I never expected to put on weight on this trip but it definitely happened haha. I still can’t believe how Sam and Crispin managed to produce such amazing food while camping. As far as the itinerary goes, we got to see all the hot spots with some unexpected additions. For those going to see the Gorilla’s, the Chimpanzee trekking was an addition that I didn’t expect to be a highlight, but it went so far above and beyond my expectations. It was one of the most moving experiences and I loved every moment I spent in the jungle with them. The accommodation in Zanzibar was absolutely beautiful. I would definitely travel with Acacia again, this trip was the best way to spend six weeks and Africa was the adventure of a lifetime.

In my opinion, Acacia Africa is the perfect way to see the spectacular splendour of Africa. The trips combine a perfect combination of tourism and exposure to the real Africa. The guides are extremely knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. Each days itinerary is very carefully explained the night before. The drivers keep your safety in mind at all time and double as excellent spotters of animals while on safari. While the accommodations are not luxurious, they are perfectly satisfactory and I loved supporting local businesses rather than chains. The food provided exceeded my expectations. It was delicious and there was always enough to have seconds. While traveling through Africa itself can present unexpected challenges, traffic, bad roads, unexpected breakdowns, the team handled everything professionally and kept us happy and well cared for. It all just added to the experience. A special shout out to our guide Liz Njuguna whose energy and enthusiasm made our trip unforgettable. If you want a vacation, go to the Caribbean. I had a fantastic time on this accommodated Cape Desert Safari Tour which was perfectly organised. The accommodation was great and we also slept 2 nights in a tent, which was easy to put up. The truck we used was perfect for this kind of trip and well equipped with all the travelling necessities including a freezer. I joined the Kruger, Swaziland and Beach 7-day tour as a camping guest but only actually camped for 3 nights where we had excellent facilities. In Swaziland, we were able to upgrade from camping to log cabin dorms for just R15 a night. On the final night we were in permanent tents with beds and linen. All locations had excellent communal facilities. There were lots of meals included and catered for vegetarians and gluten-free too. The food was very very good. Jack was our guide and a fabulous guide and chef! There were lots of included activities and everything was arranged perfectly. Compared with other tour operators, Acacia was much cheaper but do not compromise on quality so highly recommended. It was also cheaper than doing this route independently too.

I travelled on the Desert Tracker 19-day tour and it was my most memorable trip ever! My favourite part was the mokoro canoes in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. 100% recommend Acacia😊 Remember to bring warm clothes and a solid sleeping bag if you’re camping, the temperature drops ALOT as soon as the sun goes down.

I am not long back from the East African Explorer 21 day tour and thought I would share my experience. Overall, the tour was well organised and the guides ensured we felt safe at all times. The truck was well equipped and I was surprised at how comfortable the seats were - so comfortable I was able to sleep despite the 'African massages' along the way. Some of the journeys on this trip are quite long but they are unavoidable if you want to see these parts of Africa. Anyway, the route was quite scenic and the guides provided info about the surrounding area along the way and we stopped every so often to stretch our legs. The main guide, Sammy, also informed us when to stock up on snacks and drinks at the better supermarkets as a lot of the local shops were poorly supplied as you can imagine. Most of the stops had some form of toilet however my group found that the bush toilets were generally cleaner (this is Africa after all). The tents provided were pretty good and the mattresses were spot on too. I have to say, one of the things I was anxious about before going on the trip was the quality of the meals as catering for large groups often leads to small portions of massively overdone food but both Sam and Ali were great cooks and we always had plenty to eat. I travelled from Livingstone to Nairobi with Acacia. The service provided was second to none. I was worried about travelling to Africa due to safety but at no time did I feel unsafe. Our tour leader and driver were very professional and offered a lot of information and went out of their way to help with anything we needed. The camp sites were all great. I loved there was an option to upgrade for a small fee in a lot of locations. The food was awesome and there was always plenty available. I would highly recommend Acacia Africa. I would definitely travel with them again.

9 days Gorilla Trekking - Troop to the Gorilla (TTG9) This is my 2nd review for Acacia Africa as I decided to go back and do another tour as my first tour was life changing and they did not disappoint. I did a 9 day tour from Kampala to Jinja around Uganda - the main reason was to see the Gorillas at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The tour was run by Masai and Maja and they were incredible! They are both such lovely people and made the tour run smoothly and ensured we got the most out of our trip. I would highly recommend Acacia Africa for an incredible life changing experience. It is great value for money and you will honestly experience things that you will never forget.

Amazing! 7 Day Camping INSIDE National Parks from Vic Falls to Okavango Delta We heard the lions roar! The "7 Day Best of Botswana" tour had us camping inside the National Parks. No fences! Inside our tents with elephants roaming around outside... and lions. When a lion roars at night you wake up - instantly. They can be heard up to 8kms. One night after the elephants had passed us by maybe 100 meters from our tents I started to hear a male lion's deep roar... that kept getting closer... I must have dozed off till a hugely loud roar seemed just meters away. Later roars told it was moving away. We jumped up early into our LandCruiser and quickly found the lion tracks as close as 300 meters from our camp. If a close-up adventure with the animals is what you are after there is nothing I can recommend better than camping right along with them. It has an expert driver/guide (Morgan) and a chef (Noga). All we had to do was put our tents up and they did the rest, from feeding to educating us. We had 7 on our trip which is just about full so there's not a whole gaggle of tourists but a small group of really interesting people. My memories of sleepless nights under the stars with wild animals so close to camp will remain with me the rest of my life. At any price, a lifetime memory is worth it... that this safari is one of the

We started our tour in Cape Town then headed towards Cederberg and all the way up to Swakopmund. Our tour guide, Pete, was INCREDIBLE and our driver Ben was awesome too!! They were both so inviting and fun. We were unsure what to expect with the food as well but we were pleasantly surprised with how good it was and well portioned. I HIGHLY recommend this company and this tour. I wouldn't go with anyone else after my amazing experience I had.

I just finished a tour with Acacia (African Insight - NAI7) to Zimbabwe and Zambia. The Guides Justin and Khumbu did an excellent job. The food was outstanding and better than a 5 stars restaurant. Very Yummy!!!! Overall, a great experience camping.

I hopped onto the Kruger to Durban 7 days (KSB7) tour (also part of Kruger to Capetown 19 days). The tour guides were lovely and they cooked the best food! I did not find this tour expensive and if you want to travel around for a good price with a group, I can certainly recommend this tour. There was a fair bit of driving, however there were plenty stops too. The table in the truck was great to play cards and kill some time on the long drive days. I highly recommend Acacia and would use them again.

Our group of 3 women traveled with Acacia Africa in August 2016 on their small group safari, Southern African Magic Accommodated. We cannot say enough good things about our tour. Our tour leader, Lawrence, was attentive, knowledgeable, and had a good command of the English language. Our safety was his main concern and we were thankful for that. Our tour group consisted of 12 travelers, ranging in age from 25 to 67 and women outnumbering men 9 to 3. We found all accommodation on the tour to be comfortable with some lodges even having pools. The food served at the lodges was delicious and plentiful and gave us the opportunity to sample some local cuisine. Thank you for selecting lodges with local colour and flair. It brought us closer to the African people. Our itinerary included the main game parks and tourist sights in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. I did the 43 day trip from Kenya to Cape Town and it was the best thing I have ever done! The trip covered so many highlights which have made it hard to narrow it down to which ones were the best! The trip started off at the famous parks of the Masai Mara and the Serengeti before making our way to the beaches of Zanzibar and Lake Malawi. We then headed for Livingstone to enjoy the adrenaline activities such as Devil's Pool and Bungee before crossing over to Botswana, the Okavango Delta and Namibia, the Namib desert, ending at the beautiful city of Cape Town. This is just a nutshell but there is a lot more activities involved at all the places. The thing that made this trip incredible was our tour guide Rachel and truck driver Sam - they are the perfect team and made this experience unforgettable. I would happily book another tour with Acacia, it was very organised and completely blew my expectations out of the water. Thank you for giving me the experience of a lifetime.

I have just come back from the 19 Day South West Safari from the Vic Falls (Zambia) to Cape Town. This is a camping tour in an overland truck for 18 - 39-year-olds. I thoroughly recommend this route if you don't have time to do the full circuit from Uganda to Cape Town. We have seen so many different landscapes like the open plains in Botswana to the sand dunes in the Namib Desert. I went to Africa with no expectations for what animals I was going to see as I didn't want to be disappointed if I didn't see them... oh boy, was I impressed! We had seen over 100 elephants (Botswana has the highest population in Africa), countless Zebra, Giraffe, Hippos, Lion, 7 Rhinos (people who had been on the tour since Kenya hadn't even seen one yet), Buffalo + so much more. The only animal we didn't see was a Leopard, but they are really rare and remember this is the wild, no sighting is guaranteed! Our driver Sam and tour guide Rachel are both two of the nicest people I've ever met, both from Kenya. They were so informative, like two books of knowledge about everywhere our tour went and the countries we visited. Rachel is a fabulous cook, it was like eating at a fine-dining restaurant every night. They were the best guide's I've ever had, out of all the tours I've been on over the world. Overall - we are going back to Africa next year to do East Africa and I wouldn't even consider a different tour company to Acacia for a second. I just came back from a 7-day Small Groups accommodated tour from Johannesburg to Vic Falls with Acacia Africa. This was one of my best travel experiences ever! The itinerary was great as it allows you to see all the main highlights along the route. We were able to see four out of the big five - just because leopards are very difficult to spot during the day. We stayed in very nice places and the lodges/guesthouses/hotels were nice and clean. Our tour guide, Lawrence, was incredible - with a great sense of humor and he made sure everybody's interests were met. He was fantastic at creating a true family spirit within the group despite that the composition of the group was changing along the way. All local tours in the national parks were amazing as he provided lots of information along the way, even taking us as close as possible to the animals. At some point, we were as close as 5 meters to white rhinos. Oh, and the food was amazing! I didn't expect steaks, nice big salads etc. included in the package. If I ever decide to take another tour in Africa, Acacia will be my go-to company. Well done! I will definitely recommend this to other travelers.

“BEST TOUR EVER!” I did a 14-day overland from Vic Falls to Johannesburg including Mozambique and it was the best two weeks I have ever spent! We saw all the attractions you could ever want to see and had plenty of time to do our own exploring if we wanted to. There were also plenty of opportunities to do our own activities and have as much fun as we could. The camping facilities were amazing! Tents and food were provided including a cooked breakfast every morning and dinners to die for. Our tour leader Shingi was the most enthusiastic person I have ever met and is really knowledgeable, helpful and flexible. (We love you, Mama). Our driver Jairos was equally lovely and drove our truck amazingly on the bumpy roads of Africa. I would definitely recommend this tour for 18-39-year-olds and is a must do adventure.

We are a German family with 3 teenagers and had a wonderful tour through South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. Acacia has put together a very exciting trip through these three countries, visiting Kruger NP, Victoria Falls, Chobe NP and Okavango Delta. We were travelling with a small group of German, English and Italian people, all very nice. We had the perfect tour guide, Simon, who was always very supportive, calm and reliable in all situations. A big, big thank you to Simon. The lodges were clean and comfortable, we enjoyed the African style and friendly people. We booked the tour via the agency African Budget Safaris, which also was very good, providing all information about the tours. Especially the agent Claire Monson helped us a lot, a big thank you. We really recommend this tour, if you are looking for an adventure trip for the whole family without driving on your own. The National Parks were amazing, we never saw so many wild animals so close in nature, the rangers were very skilled and explained all details.

I just finished the overland camping trip from Cape Town to Victoria Falls/Livingstone. Amazing!! The guide and driver - yo Big Sam! - were great, nothing was too much trouble and they really worked hard to make sure we all had an incredible time. The itinerary was perfect, we got to see and do so many amazing things - the Okavango Delta, dune 45, sandboarding, skydiving, Chobe National Park, Vic Falls... I could name so much more! And the campsites were incredible, think watching shooting stars on a huge rock in the middle of nowhere, or camping literally next to a elephant watering hole with no fences around you! If you have doubts about camping please don't - the mattresses were A LOT more comfy than i expected, the tents were HUGE and i had hot showers most of the time! And the FOOD. I definitely put on a few kgs. Overall it was an incredible experience with an amazing group of people that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend! Thanks acacia!

The highlight of our tour to Victoria Falls was our excellent guide Simon. He really went above and beyond to keep us happy and safe. Simon's enthusiasm is infectious, he is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about show what Southern Africa has to offer. We had an unavoidable change of itinerary due to the political situation in Zimbabwe and Simon was able to keep us well informed and make alternate arrangements. The tour itself was a great way for us to see Kruger, Botswana and Victoria Falls. There are some long days driving but the spectacular views of Victoria Falls are worth it. The accommodation is adequate, with the first 2 nights at Nsele Lodge a highlight. The host are very welcoming and the food amazing. We would recommend Acacia Africa to anyone looking for a guided tour in Africa.

The whole trip was spectacular from the border crossings to the safaris in the truck every bit of it was cultural and enjoyable. The scenery is something from a story book, from lush rainforests to salt lakes and sand dunes it's incredible that you get to see so much in one continent.

Africa is a vast and scenically stunning continent, from rich tropical rainforest to immense desert dunes, snow-capped mountains and wild coastal cliffs to tranquil white sand beaches and turquoise oceans. Africa is home to the greatest diversity of wildlife on earth and a rich tapestry of cultures and traditions. There are so many unparalleled adventures to be had in this unique continent that whittling them down to a Top 10 is no small feat and certainly leaves out some incredible experiences. But, we wanted to share a few of our personal favourites, so in no particular order here goes…

1. Snorkel in an inland sea

Lake Malawi is a water adventurer's paradise! This expansive body of water, comprises over a fifth of Malawi’s total area, creating the impression of an inland sea rather than a lake. Its sparkling waters, lap golden sand beaches. It’s the treasures beneath that make it a true gem though, boasting the greatest diversity of freshwater fish species of any lake in the world, including hundreds of species of colourful cichlid fish.

There are numerous fantastic sites to snorkel, or scuba dive, along the length of the lake and around its islands, at which you can explore this natural aquarium. You can dip into its waters direct from the shore and your lakeside accommodation will often provide complimentary snorkelling equipment. An optional boat excursion is also highly recommended to access some of the best spots and may include other small treats, such as a fish lunch, fish eagle feeding or sundowner drink, to complement your experience.

There are also many other activities to enjoy at Lake Malawi, including kayaking, sailing, water-skiing, and kitesurfing, to name a few.

2. Trek in the 'Playground of the Gods'

The Simien Mountains , in northern Ethiopia, are jaw droppingly spectacular, which is why they have also been described as the playground of the gods. The incredibly varied scenery offers dramatic views over chiselled crags and pinnacles, rising imposingly from the valleys and grass plains.

The vegetation in the Simiens is also unique and home to some special nature that alone makes a visit here well worth it. There can be few more distinct experiences than sitting peacefully amongst a troop of hundreds of Gelada baboons, their long, golden hair blowing majestically in the wind, as they waddle past, and listening to the sound, as they pull at the grass that they feed on. You will also hope to spot the remarkable and endangered Walia Ibex, with its huge, curved horns, as well as a host of exciting and endemic birds.

Several peaks in the Simiens are over 4000 metres and the tallest, Mount Ras Dashen, is 4533 metres - Africa’s fourth highest mountain. The more adventurous or keen hiker can join a guided trek, exploring different areas of the park and its highest peaks – left breathless by both the high-altitude ascents and incredible views. For those that prefer a more relaxed adventure, there are a couple of superbly situated lodges from which you can follow shorter and gentler trails to enjoy the scenery.

3. Hot air balloon flight over the Masai Mara

For the romantic adventurer there can be few experiences more perfect than drifting serenely over the endless plains of the Masai Mara in a hot air balloon. A hot air balloon flight offers you a unique perspective on this magnificent grassland ecosystem and its wildlife.

You will rise early to be transferred to the launch site, so that your flight may take off at sunrise. The soft morning light delivers warm colours, as you appreciate the immensity and beauty of the landscape. Your flight lasts about an hour, with only the occasional blast of the burners interrupting the idyllic tranquillity.

The experience does not end on landing, as you will be treated to a champagne breakfast surrounded by nature. This may not be the cheapest of adventures, but it’s one that you will cherish for a lifetime.

4. Raft the White Nile

From land to air and now to the water, but an activity more for the adrenaline junkies than the tranquillity of hot air ballooning. There are some extreme white-water rapids to be conquered in Africa. The most obvious being at the adrenaline capital of Victoria Falls. However, I would highly recommend rafting the White Nile River.

The White Nile, which flows out of Lake Victoria, is the longest river in the world. Its ferocious rapids, several of which are Class 5, pump huge volumes of water; up to 10 times those of the Zambezi River. There’s more to this experience than the thrill of rafting the series of increasingly challenging whitewater obstacles. Between rapids you drift serenely along sections of calm water, enjoying the beautifully lush forest scenery and birdlife, refreshed by pineapple, freshly carved and served up by your river guides.

Where you can do it: Jinja, Uganda

Best time of year: Year-round, as there is little seasonal variation in water levels.

5. Gorilla trekking

Whilst we’re in Uganda , trekking to see the mountain gorillas is an experience that must undoubtedly be on our list. It’s perhaps one of the most unique wildlife encounters that you can have, spending time with a magnificent silverback and his family.

You will trek as part of a small group, accompanied by your expert guide and trackers, and this is very much part of the adventure. Wild gorillas don’t just sit around and wait for you to come to them, you have to put in the effort to find them. They may have settled in an easily accessible area that you can reach within a relatively short hike, or they may have moved deep into the forest, requiring a more strenuous trek through challenging terrain. The dense vegetation, narrow paths and steep mountains can be hard going; it’s not called the Impenetrable Forest in Uganda for nothing. Catching the first glimpse of your gorilla family is more than reward enough for your exertions.

You will spend one of your most memorable hours in the close company of these creatures, whose behaviours so closely mirror our own. Up to just six metres away, you enjoy their fascinating interactions, as youngsters play around and mothers care for their babies, all under the watchful gaze of the silverback.

It’s well worth considering booking 2 treks on consecutive days, as each trek is a different experience and there are never 100% guarantees when it comes to viewing wildlife. Best time of year: Although it’s possible year-round, the best time is generally during the two dry seasons; January-February and June-September. This may be dictated by availability of permits.

6. Explore ancient clifftop and rock hewn churches

Adventure is not only about incredible wildlife experiences and adrenaline activities… remember Indiana Jones. Africa is a continent bursting with history and culture that will enthral even the most intrepid explorers.

The stunning rock hewn churches at Lalibela are probably the best-known highlight of Ethiopia’s northern historic circuit. Carved directly from the rock, the 13 unique churches date back to the twelfth century and will leave you in awe.

For the ultimate cultural quest though, we recommend truly leaving the usual trail to discover the spectacular cave churches of the Gheralta region. Many of these are perched atop steep cliffs, making the trek to reach them an adventure in itself and delivering breathtaking views. The relatively small number of visitors to the region, means the few who complete the journey to these churches are particularly well received by the locals and priests, providing an intimate experience.

Where you can do it: Lalibela and Gheralta, northern Ethiopia.

Best time of year: November to March are the cooler and drier months, making them a good time for walking and visiting the historic sites. However, they are also busier months, so travelling slightly outside the peak months will mean fewer other visitors at Lalibela. June-August are the heavier rains, so probably best avoided.

7. Swim with whale sharks

With an average length of about 10 metres, whale sharks are the biggest fish in the sea. Yet they are incredibly majestic and gentle, which makes the experience of swimming alongside one the most magical of underwater adventures. Sadly, these magnificent creatures are now listed as endangered, due largely to overfishing, so encountering them in the wild is a real privilege.

It’s an added bonus that the best places in Africa to see whale sharks also happen to be amongst the most idyllic coastal havens. In these warm tropical waters, seasonal blooms of plankton, which the whale sharks feed on in vast quantities, result in large aggregations, often swimming very close to the surface. The plankton also draws other special species, such as manta rays.

This is an unforgettable experience and one which it’s important to organise through an ethical operator, with strong conservation ethics and guidelines, to avoid any negative impacts on the whale sharks.

Where you can do it: Mafia Island, Tanzania or Tofo Beach, Mozambique .

Best time of year: There are resident whale sharks in these waters year-round. However, the best time of year is between October and March, to coincide with the plankton blooms and whale shark aggregations.

8. Mokoro through the channels of the Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. Its myriad of channels branch to form a vast network of waterways and marshy floodplains, filled annually by rainfall from the Angolan highlands, covering an area of 6,000-15,000 square kilometres. This exceptional ecosystem provides habitat for an incredible concentration and diversity of plants and wildlife, making it a top safari destination.

A mokoro is a long, dug-out canoe, traditionally carved from the trunk of a single tree and poled tranquilly along.

The combination of the two provides one of the most distinctive safari experiences in Africa. As you glide silently along the channels at water level, you gain a unique perspective of the wildlife and appreciate every sound of the nature that surrounds you. Imagine being at eye level with a huge elephant bull, feeding nonchalantly in the reeds, as a kingfisher dives into the water beside you and an African fish eagle glides overhead – this is an adventure that you can experience nowhere else on Earth.

There are also a variety of other safari activities on offer in the Okavango Delta, including boat safaris, game drives and walking. For the truly adventurous, a horseback safari in the Okavango deserves its own spot on this list. Watching antelope from horseback gives you a special feeling of being one of the herd. Cantering alongside a journey of giraffes, with their slow, lolloping gait, water spraying up around you is truly exhilarating.

Best time of year: The Okavango Delta is great to visit year-round. However, the channels start to fill from March, peaking in June-August and then subsiding, making these the best months for a mokoro safari.

9. Scale giant desert dunes

Many of the imposing red dunes that surround Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert , Namibia , are more than 200 metres high and the highest, Big Daddy, is about 325 metres. If you rise early, to be one of the first to reach Sossusvlei, you may be lucky enough to lay fresh tracks in the pristine sands, as you trek along the ridgeline to one of their summits.

The cool of morning is the best time of day for this adventure. The dunes are at their finest, swept smoothly into a crisp crest that marks your route to endless views over this magnificent desert sandscape. Descend to explore the dry and cracked clay pan of Sossusvlei, which very rarely holds any water, flooding only once every several years. Keep an eye out for the desert wildlife, adapted to life with very little water and temperature extremes. In particular, the striking gemsbok and springbok antelope that you may spot in the shade of the sparse vegetation around the vlei.

Continue your adventure to the nearby Deadvlei, with its striking dark skeletons of camel thorn trees, contrasting against the bleached-white pan and surrounding red dunes. These dead trunks, preserved by the dry conditions, are around 900 years old.

To end your day of adventure, enjoy the sunset with a cool drink in hand and listen. You may hear a small clicking chirp, then another and another, until hundreds of barking geckos build to a crescendo, singing the day to an end. Then suddenly they all stop, and the spectacular starlit Namib night descends.

Best time of year: Year-round, but May to September for the slightly cooler temperatures.

10. Sleep under a blanket of stars

The descent of night brings us perfectly to number 10 on our list. Let’s face it, with all these adventures you are going to need to sleep at some point. Africa is reputed to have bigger skies than anywhere else and at night they are covered with a mesmerising blanket of stars.

The breathtakingly beautiful starlit African skies and mild nights has made sleepouts under nothing more than a mosquito net increasingly popular. You can find star beds imaginatively situated in all kinds of romantic settings – from deserted beaches to isolated rock kopjes or bird nest style hides up trees.

For me, the perfect and most adventurous sleep out is as part of a walking safari. As remote as possible, no man-made light pollution, and listening to the night-time sounds as you drift off, gazing up at the heavens. But perhaps I’m biased by the night I spent on my honeymoon in a dry riverbed in South Luangwa , listening to and feeling the vibrations from the calls of pride of nearby lions - there can be no more iconic end to any African adventure.

Where you can do it: There are so many places to choose between that’s probably a separate blog in itself. As part of a walking safari, I would recommend South Luangwa National Park, Zambia (or Serengeti, Tanzania).

Best time of year: When it’s less likely to be raining. May to October in South Luangwa.

Africa may not always register on the average traveler's radar, but those who visit have the chance to experience the perfect blend of ancient and modern, wild and urban, and East and West. From Cape Town's coastal beauty to Tanzania's game reserves, choosing your adventure on the second-largest continent can be difficult. If you're enamored with the prospect of coming face to face with elephants, giraffes, zebras and wildebeests, then a safari tour through Tanzania's Serengeti National Park is the bucket-list adventure for you. The price will be steep, but a journey here affords an unforgettable African savanna experience. To save some coin, book one of the park's campgrounds instead of staying at a high-end safari lodge or luxury tented camp. Plan on arriving in January or February (calving season) or between June and October (dry season and prime migration time) for the best game-viewing conditions.

Outdoorsy types travel far and wide to admire this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site. Straddling the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, Victoria Falls is roughly twice as deep and wide as Niagara Falls, making it one of the world's most jaw-dropping waterfalls . To see this natural wonder at its prime, plan a visit in April or May when the region's rainy season has concluded. Popular vantage points include the Knife-Edge Bridge, Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool. When you're not enjoying the view from above, go whitewater rafting in the Zambezi River to admire the falls from a different angle.

Most tourists head to Tanzania to go on safari, but you'd be remiss if you didn't save time for the country's other must-see treasures. In addition to its animal-filled plains, Tanzania boasts otherworldly natural wonders, including red-hued Lake Natron, Ngorongoro Conservation Area's expansive crater and Mount Kilimanjaro – the tallest mountain in Africa (and largest free-standing mountain on Earth). For the ultimate adrenaline rush, book a climbing excursion up the continent's famous mountain through a local tour operator.

Mauritius appeals to vacationers in search of a bit of everything. Though its main draws are its powdery sands and luxe beach resorts , this small island nation east of Madagascar also charms visitors with its mix of cultures; friendly locals; lively festivals and tasty teas and rums. After a day of exploring some of the island's nature reserves and soaking up the sun, retreat to one of its premier properties to savor fresh seafood while watching a traditional sega dance performance or the sun set over the Indian Ocean.

Home to cheetahs, elephants, lions, wildebeests, hippos and more, Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Kenya's premier spots to see wildlife. Sign up for a safari to explore this protected area's 373,000-plus acres of rolling grasslands. (Tip: Look for companies with guides certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association.) For an extra dose of adventure, opt for a horseback riding excursion or hot air balloon safari. To increase your chances of spotting the big five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes) and other migrating animals, time your visit between July and October during the Great Migration.

Zanzibar offers something for everyone, whether you're in search of beautiful white sand beaches or an unforgettable adventure. After trekking to this Indian Ocean archipelago off the coast of East Africa, you'll instantly feel at ease as you lounge on quiet beaches like Matemwe and Kiwengwa. Next, visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stone Town, where you'll find the ruins of a 19th-century palace and a graveyard with ties to Zanzibar's former Arab royals. And no trip would be complete without taking a spice tour in the countryside and exploring Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. As an added bonus, you'll find this is a surprisingly cheap tropical destination .

A grouping of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles has long attracted those looking for a truly relaxing, off-the-beaten-path getaway. Spend your days lounging on pristine, crowd-free beaches like Anse Lazio and Anse Source D'Argent, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Or, head deep into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Vallée de Mai nature reserve to gaze at its unique flora and fauna. Keep in mind that lodging here is expensive (especially at the luxury resorts), so it's best to save up and book in advance.

With numerous hiking trails, miles of dramatic scenery and stunning beaches (including one with wild penguins), this South Africa hub caters to both adventurous and laid-back travelers. Getting to Cape Town won't be cheap, but your dollar will go far once you arrive. Make sure you take the aerial cableway up Table Mountain, visit Nelson Mandela's jail cell on Robben Island and explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region. You'll also want to save time to trek through the Cape of Good Hope, which lies 40 miles south of Cape Town on the southern tip of Africa.

Cairo can be overwhelming, as there's so much to see and do everywhere you turn. From Islamic Cairo's bustling Khan El-Khalili bazaar to the ancient Pyramids of Giza to the picturesque Nile River, you'll be immersed in this Egyptian city's history and culture before long. Though winter offers the most pleasant weather of the year (with daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s), it's also the busiest season, so consider visiting in spring or fall when room rates are lower, temps are bearable and crowds thin out.

Like other historic Moroccan cities, Marrakech buzzes with life: Performers vie for your attention in Jemaa El Fna (an open-air square in the heart of the Medina of Marrakesh) while vendors hawk aromatic spices, homemade textiles, ornate lanterns and more at the bazaars along the alleyways. When you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, unwind at a hammam, visit the Jardin Majorelle or head to a rooftop bar and relax before retiring to your riad. During your visit, keep an ear out to hear the striking tones of the nearby mosques' calls to prayer.

You'll spot plenty of animals – ranging from lions to rhinos to elephants to giraffes – in this massive game preserve in South Africa. Kruger National Park's network of paved roads makes it easier to navigate than Serengeti, and it tends to be cheaper to visit. However, its popularity (especially from May to October, which are the best months for wildlife viewing) means you're more likely to encounter hordes of visitors during game drives. Consider visiting one of the park's private game reserves for a more exclusive experience, and to ensure lodging, flight and tour availability, you'll likely want to finalize your trip at least a year in advance.

The habitat on the island of Madagascar is unlike any other in the world: Most of the landscape is unspoiled, giving visitors a chance to see animals in their natural environment. Travelers should look out for the country's signature animal: the lemur. Madagascar is home to more than 100 species of these creatures, as well as 11,000-plus plant species, including majestic baobab trees. A top destination for adventure

SA Tourism has reported that there is global demand for South Africa and its’ adventure offerings, with more and more tourists visiting the country to enjoy the thrills.

As per Travel News , South Africa currently ranks among the world’s leading adventure destinations for travellers from across Europe, the UK, the Americas, Brazil, Asia, Japan and the rest of Africa.

SA Tourism’s Brand Tracker for 2023, an international brand assessment that determined appeal and demand creation in South Africa’s markets, found that adventure tourists made up 8.8% (722 900) of the country’s 8.2 million arrivals in 2023, with adventure and wildlife as important factors in the country’s tourism attractiveness and appeal.

The survey revealed that the UK, Germany, the US, Netherlands and France were the top five adventure tourist markets by volume. Europe provided the highest proportion of adventure travellers with 65% of overall arrivals into South Africa.

“Adventure tourism is the new gold. Tourists across the globe are seeking experiences over products and prioritising their spending on unique and exciting activities. This trend will continue and allow the country to drive growth following full recovery from the pandemic,” SA Tourism said.

Other key insights

Some other key insights from the survey revealed that North America contributed 15% of arrivals (107 000), followed by Africa with 11% (77 400). Asia, Australasia, the Middle East and South America contributed the remaining 10%.

Another interesting highlight of the brand tracker survey was that adventure tourists to South Africa stayed five nights longer and spent almost three times more than the average tourist to the country.

The survey also found that the Western Cape was the adventure hotspot of South Africa this past 2023, contributing to 85% of all the adventure tourists and 62% of overall spend in the country.
