American indie and alternative rock group Imagine Dragons was established in 2008 and is made up of four members from Las Vegas, Nevada (US). The lineup consists of vocalist Dan Reynolds, bassist Ben McKee, drummer Daniel Platzman, and guitarist Wayne “Wing” Sermon.

The band’s first big break came in 2009 at the Bite of Las Vegas Festival when Train frontman Pat Monahan fell ill. As a last-minute replacement, Imagine Dragons’ first major gig before an audience of 26,000.

Over the next two years, Imagine Dragons followed up with two EPs, Imagine Dragons and Hell and Silence. It broke out in 2011 with the single “It’s Time”, which led them to sign with Interscope Records. The band moved to California and worked with producer Alex da Kid on two more EPs: Continued Silence and Hear Me. Now ready for the big leagues, Imagine Dragons released its debut album Night Visions in the summer of 2012.

Night Visions was a smash hit across the board. The highest-charting rock album since 2006, it sold over 83,000 copies and reached the number one spot on Billboard’s Alternative and Rock Album chart. It topped charts worldwide, reaching the #1 spot in the UK, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada, and produced chart-topping singles “Radioactive” and “Demons”.

Imagine Dragons launched its Night Visions Tour, and the resulting series of sold-out shows across the US and Europe earned it recognition as “The Best Breakout Band of 2013” from Billboard. While touring, the band worked on dozens of demos which would lead to the band’s second studio release.

Over the course of 2014, Imagine Dragons honed these songs as it worked on other projects like the song “Battle Cry” for Transformers: Age of Extinction and “Warriors” for the esports event League of Legends Championships. By that October, its new single “I Bet My Life” heralded even greater successes in the coming year.

InFebruary 2015, Imagine Dragons’ second studio album, Smoke + Mirrors debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. The record proved that the band had truly arrived and went on to sell well over one million copies. Another tour ensued in June of 2015 which would press on into early 2016. Along the way, the band also released a cover of the Eagles of Death Metal song “I Love You All the Time” in support of victims of the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris.

For a lot of 2016, the band took a break, releasing just a few singles for the films Suicide Squad, Me Before You and Passengers. Suicide Squad’s “Sucker for Pain,” featuring Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Ty Dolla Sign, and X Ambassadors, was a smash hit, topping the charts in what was otherwise a quiet year for the band.

In February of 2017, audiences would get its first taste of new music from the band with the song “Believer,” the first new single from the upcoming record, which also appeared in a Super Bowl ad. A few months later in May, the album arrived. Evolve was revealed with a whole new collection of songs, a brand new single (“Whatever It Takes”) and a tour announcement all on the same day. Evolve would go on to be nominated for multiple Grammys and win Best Rock Video at the MTV Music Awards for “Whatever It Takes.”

Imagine Dragons didn’t rest on its laurels after 2017. The Evolve Tour continued, more singles dropped including “Natural,” and a collaboration tune with Kygo called “Born to Be Yours” hit Twitter. But why stop there? Origins, the band’s fourth studio album in six years, hit audiences with full force, making it to number two on the Billboard 200 and #1 on Top Rock Albums.

Finally, Imagine Dragons took a more restful couple of years. As Reynolds focused on new fatherhood and COVID-19 shut down concert venues, the band’s output slowed down to singles and video releases of old songs.

Then, in 2021, Mercury – Act 1 came out. The next year, 2022, a sequel, Mercury, Acts 1 & 2 followed. Produced by the legendary Rick Rubin, the concept album would slap dozens of tracks down with yet another tour ramping up.

Catch Imagine Dragons in concert when the tour rolls around to your area.

Live reviews

The story of Imagine Dragons and their rise in popularity is an inspiring one. They're a band that put out a 4.5 star album (Night Visions) and toured religiously until it finally caught on. They played small clubs and were on the bottom of lineup posters just three years ago. Now they're one of the biggest bands around, headlining festivals and performing in arenas every night.

I was lucky enough to see Imagine Dragons when they were just getting going. I saw them play The Metro in Chicago (one of my favorite venues) in what ended up being one of the best shows of 2013. I also love Night Visions. It would have been the best album of 2012, if not for Mumford and Sons Babel being released that same month.

So when Imagine Dragons announced their summer tour, I was excited to see a Tampa stop included. I was not happy however, to see the show was at the 18,000 capacity Amalie Arena. This was quite the change from their first show in Tampa at the Ritz Theater with a capacity of 1,100.

I also wasn't as excited as expected for the show because the tour is in support of the groups much anticipated second album - Smoke and Mirrors. The record was put out in February of this year, and I was extremely disappointed. In my opinion, the Las Vegas rockers abandoned their alternative roots and made a poppy record that would just get radio play.

That record was on full display for their Friday night Tampa show. Imagine Dragons performed 12 songs from Smoke & Mirrors, essentially playing the album in full. Now I know this was the 'Smoke & Mirrors Tour,' but how about a nod to the album and the fans that got you to where you are today?

Instead, the guys just gave minimal nods to Night Visions. They played the four most popular songs from it ('It's Time,' 'Radioactive,' 'Demons,' and 'On Top of the World'). They also played one acoustic verse each from 'Nothing Left to Say' and 'Bleeding Out.' It was nothing close to the attention that album deserves and fans were hoping for. I would have loved to have heard just one of the following: 'Hear Me,' 'Amsterdam,' 'Nothing Left to Say,' 'Round and Round,' or 'Selene.'

Instead, I was listening to a poppy album in a half empty arena. That's right, sales were weak for this Friday night show in the music friendly community of Tampa. The floor was only at about half capacity. Maybe the $90 price point for a floor ticket was one reason, but it's never easy to get into the show when the band is playing at a venue much too large for their popularity.

Another negative of the night was the formation and style that the band chose to lay out. Lead singer Dan Reynolds played 80% of the show from an extended part of the stage that ran down the middle of the floor. At times, it seemed like a solo show for him, rather than a full band experience. I couldn't even tell you any highlights from the other contributing members of Imagine Dragons.

Lastly, one of my favorite things from the first three years of touring for ID, was their unique and constant use of rhythmic drums. They used to have drums of all sounds and sizes scattered across the stage. Each member would go to their drum station constantly throughout the set, and the beats and rhythms they came up with were addicting to watch. With the exception of 'Radioactive,' that fun portion of the show has completely disappeared from their live set.

Overall, this show was a disappointment. There was a great band that put out a superb debut back in 2003 entitled 'Songs about Jane.' That band (Maroon 5) went on to release 4 more albums, with each being worse than the album before it. At the same time though, their radio play and recognition in the top 40 community has increased with each release. I think Imagine Dragons might be the next Maroon 5.

I’ve been listening to the group since so long, and the first song I heard from them was Radioactive, which everyone knows I’m sure of it. The concert run an hour late, but nobody was complaining and they started with I don’t know why, which immediately put everybody in the mood. There was many generations mixed, and all the adults around me didn’t really knew imagine dragons, weren’t really sure if they were going to like it, and were really surprised to see they were just loving the concert. The group was playing and singing at the perfection, all of them was contributing to the making of each songs, and there was such a good atmosphere it was really incredible. Dan Reynolds (the lead singer) talked really often to the crowd during the show and also took a moment to raise awareness about LGBT youth, which was a really touching moment. Their energy, their complicity with each other, everything was perfect, and the last song, radioactive, there so well known hit, just ended the concert with a great energy. I loved it, probably one of the best concert I’ve ever been. Imagine dragons is not like many artists who just come on stage, say hi, sing ( either in playback, or wrong), don’t interact with the crowd, and get out of stage without a thank you. Imagine dragons talked to us so many times it was really pleasant, I’ve never seen a group or an artist take the time to say something relevant, they even went into the crowd during the show, to the back of the concert hall so people in the back could see them at least for 3 songs. It was perfect, and I sure will go to their next concert, because seeing Imagine dragons in live, is just magic and unforgettable.

Listening to Las Vegas native band Imagine Dragons through headphones is one great experience, but seeing them perform their upbeat guitar and drum tunes in person, paired with the resonating vocals of Dan Reynolds, truly makes for a life-changing event.

The band has now performed all over the world due to their understandable success, and I saw them play at Lollapalooza in Brazil where they dressed in all black and gave the screaming crowd something they wouldn’t ever forget. The mellifluous band has a sort of chill, indie, rock and roll style, but they are far from an independent band – they embarked on a world tour after major success with their single “Radioactive” and have received lots of radio play for their cool guitar strums and cheerful yet relaxing music style.

Seeing the band live really makes you want to get off your feet, and the lively lyrics will truly dare you to try and stand still in one place, as the music urges you to let go and give in to the feeling of the music flowing through your whole body as your hear it the amazing instrumentals and sounds.

At Lollapalooza, the band didn’t require any props besides a simple few lights and their name in the background on a screen. All they need are their instruments, and Dan’s soulful voice.

This was the first concert that we took our two children to (ages 10 and 12) and they had a great time! The venue (Shoreline Amphitheater) was fantastic and we enjoyed our view from the lawn.

The opening bands were engaging and certainly warmed up the crowd! When Imagine Dragons appeared, our kids were really excited and ready for a "full concert experience"! Imagine Dragons did not disappoint! They played all the popular songs as well as some older ones. They even changed stages halfway through the concert which was a great bonus! The band definitely knew how to keep the crowd engaged from asking us to sing along to "Yesterday" and even releasing large balloons for the crowd to bat around throughout the second half of the concert.

Their final few songs, which included Radioactive, were absolutely brilliant! They had so much energy at the end it was infectious! Their extended drumming section in Radioactive was awesome! They ended with two songs instead of a typical walk off and then come back for an encore. Their final song, Believer, was a rocking anthem that had us all walking away singing at the end of the concert. Overall, it was a great first concert for my kids and a great reminder of why live music matters so much!

I haven't been on the Imagine Dragons bandwagon as long as some have. I picked them up after Night Visions came out and they quickly became an act I needed to see. Their catchy blend of pop and rock elements was always going to be a winner live. And it was.

I saw them play to a sold-out Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne. Their support act were British India, a local band who had achieved reasonable levels of success on the national stage. They were solid and a good lead-in to the main act.

They opened with Shots and built an amazing set list from there. They played all of their hits, debuted a couple of new songs they haven't done before and threw in a couple of covers (Forever Young and Beds Are Burning) to fill out their performance. Dan Reynolds is an amazing vocalist and his backing instrumentalists (Sermon, McKee and Platzman) complemented his eccentric and energetic performance style.

The only letdown of the night was the atmosphere. I'm unsure if it was the venue's acoustics or the audience but it wasn't as loud or electric as the gigs I've been to before.

Overall I'd give the show a 9/10 and that will only improve with another album or two of quality content. I'd definitely go see them again.

The concert was really great. Every members of the band had SO much energy that they shared with the public. Dan Reynolds made a speech on the LGBT youth at some point during the concert and that was great, he spoke with his heart and the public gave this love back. The light were blowing our minds and they were at their best during the whole concert.

At some point, there only were instumentals and the singer (Dan Reynolds) lied down on the ground and started doing yoga, which was pretty funny.

In the middle of the concert, they went on the second stage (smaller and in the middle of the room) so everyone could see them.

They ended the concert with the first song we have (my sisters and I) discovered them with six years ago.

I truly encourage people to go to their concert because they are one of the most fantastic band of the 21th century.

PS: if I can share an advise, if you really want to bring a goodie home, buy it BEFORE the concert. At the end, there are a lot of people and, I guess, less choice (we bought it before the concert so we had all the pleasure and time to choose what we wanted)

On October 1st I went to Imagine Dragons concert for the first time. It was a breathtaking performance. Dan’s beautiful and emotional speech is still in my mind, especially the part about things that don’t mean nothing and are given meaning like class, color, race. Dan’s voice is really powerful and very unique that makes you feel goosebumps. His personality is one of the best. He is an honest and a nice person which he expresses through his music, the way he talks and acts, the way he stays positive and inspires us to rise up, believe that the lost things will come back to us, be thankful to yesterdays, sometimes start over and do whatever it takes to make it up to our loved ones and become stronger, no matter how much pain we go through. Imagine Dragons does a great job in creating meaningful, inspirational and emotional music which is very rare in our day and age. My friends and I laughed, cried, danced, sang and screamed so much that we couldn’t talk after it. The feelings are unforgettable. It was an experience worth repeating a thousand times. Thank you Imagine Dragons.

really good live production, dan's voice is very beautiful live and wing's guitar solos were also impressive. the drummer did a very nice piece but unfortunately we didn't hear from the bassist.

we sat in block 102 of the o2 arena which was on the left of the stage. we had a good view but there were a lot of couples around us who were not very enthusiastic about the concert which made the concert slightly sedate to enjoy. if you want to really get into the music I recommend standing but if you want to go with a friend or something to just listen and watch nicely then sit.

also I wasn't really massively impressed with the track list. they didn't sing smoke and mirrors or bleeding out, which we were disappointed by. the encore song was "the fall" which wasn't the energetic fun song the audience was expecting. radioactive and demons were both excellent but I think they wanted to promote songs from the new album.

still would recommend as you can watch nicely or really get into the music.

Well-imagined dragons: an excellent performance from an extremely enthusiastic and (at times almost too) humble band, clearly enjoying every minute of their time on stage.

The support act, Sunset Sons, kicked things off excellently with some high-energy, high-tempo tracks to a very receptive crowd, setting the tone for the main event.

forty minutes or so later, the Dragons burst on to the stage to a huge ovation, got straight into it and kept the pace up the whole way through, only really stopping from time to time to thank the fans, be a bit grateful and have a bit of a joke from time to time.

I'm not sure if I had lower expectations than was fair of this band, who I've only seen once previously at Glastonbury '14 (which mainly involved them all being covered in mud), but for me they massively over-delivered on staging, performance and energy to provide a fantastic night, culminating in the inevitable, uh, golden shower of glittery leaves from above. Excellent stuff.

Sound was pretty horrible, waaaay too loud, even with earplugs, which I almost never need to wear.

Many awkward choices of covers with awkward musical production choices. Feels like as they only have about 4 hits, they just spent the entire first hour of the concert stalling for time, giving every band member a chance for a below-average, horribly sounding solo.

The guitarist's overuse of harmonizer (+/-1 octave) only made his solo even more childish and simply sounded awful. Felt like he was trying to imitate Rage Against the Machine's creative guitar playing, although stealing techniques doesn't make it your own.

I believe that this is what happens when a young band gain a lot of popularity in relatively short time, experience is noticeably lacking here.

Visuals and lighting were good and with high quality though.

Last year, the members of Imagine Dragons found themselves with a rare and well-deserved break from the road—perhaps their longest in many years. So, they made the most of it by devoting that time to family and friends. Catalyzed by this respite with a refreshed perspective, the band rallied together in the studio and mined the same well of inspiration that fed their most beloved material. The musicians reflected on the past in order to catapult into a future where stylistic boundaries have disappeared entirely and anything is possible creatively. This journey has brought them to their most dynamic and definitive body of work to date, LOOM.

In tandem with the record, the band will embark on their biggest North American headline tour to date. Descending upon legendary venues across the country, it kicks off on July 30, 2024 in Camden, NJ at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion, rolls through major markets coast-to-coast, and concludes on October 22, 2024 at Los Angeles’ iconic Hollywood Bowl.

Imagine Dragons

The Imagine Dragons Loom World Tour 2024 takes off from Camden, NJ, in July and finally crashes back town in late October around Los Angeles, but will most likely head further afield to Europe and more later in the fall. The tour is to support the band's latest album, Loom, out late June 2024.

Talking at an interview about the album, “Is the beginning of something new, or is this the end of something? And the sunset and the sunrise always kind of feels that way to me. It could be either/or.” Reynolds said about the cover artwork, and the title of the new album having multiple meanings. “Just because something is looming doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad. It could be good,” he says. “I also love the idea of the double meaning of it, kind of being a tapestry.”

"Eyes Closed," the first single off the new album, was also released recently, and you can immediately hear the dragons in it, with some serious chest-pounding lyrics: “I’m back from the dead, from the back of my head/Been gone and facin’ horrors that should never be said.” Reynolds stated that he was attempting a blustery, arrogant vibe for the track, but somehow some vulnerability slipped in. “It really was about being something that on the outside looks put together and strong,” he said, “but on the inside it’s on the verge of maybe shattering.”

The tour will crisscross North America in support of, Loom, traveling to Dallas, Seattle, Toronto, West Palm Beach, in Florida, Denver, Charlotte, in North Carolina, Phoenix, Salt Lake City before finishing it up at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. And for fans in any of these cities, Reynolds has a message for when you get to the gig, “It’s just a lot of people in a room together realizing they’re not alone in their feelings,” he said. “I don’t necessarily need them to feel happy or sad or anything. I just want them to look around them and see that other people are also feeling something and feeling, ‘I’m not alone in that.’”

Grab your tickets today, these will sell out, and they will do so quick! The Imagine Dragons Loom World Tour 2024 at Massachusetts' Xfinity Center on Tuesday, August 6th 2024. Let's make this happen, people!

Imagine Dragons' Dan Reynolds Wrote New Album After His World Was 'Turned Upside Down': 'I Was Refinding Myself' (Exclusive)

Dan Reynolds was in uncharted territory as he navigated a new city and a divorce

eric ray davidson

  • Imagine Dragons' new album Loom is out June 28
  • Frontman Dan Reynolds opens up to PEOPLE about the "very transitionary time" that inspired the new album
  • "My world had been turned upside down," Reynolds says. "I was refinding myself"

There are several reasons why Imagine Dragons named their latest album Loom . For starters, frontman Dan Reynolds dug the “ominous” sound of the title. Then there’s the nostalgia factor of Loom also being the name of one of his favorite childhood video games.

But most importantly, Reynolds, 36, knows that the word represents the fact that life hurtles on, whether we like it or not—something he learned amid a difficult stretch while writing the record.

“My world had been turned upside down. I had just moved to a brand-new city. I was refinding myself. It was a very transitionary time for me,” Reynolds tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “I really don’t like change, but the sooner you can accept the inevitability of change, the more peaceful life becomes.”

Just like the Dragons’ other works — including their seven-times platinum 2012 debut album Night Visions — Reynolds says the band’s latest effort is essentially his “journal entries” from the past few years.

Gabe Ginsberg/Getty

During that time, he moved from Las Vegas to Los Angeles — and ended his marriage to singer Aja Volkman , whom he wed in 2011 and with whom he shares daughters Arrow, 11, Gia and Coco, 7, and son Valentine, 4 (Reynolds has since found love again with actress Minka Kelly ).

Several songs on the album, including “Don’t Forget Me” and “Fire in These Hills,” appear to hint at the difficult split, which is par for the course with Reynolds, as he has been using music as a “cathartic” outlet for his feelings since he was 12 years old.

“That’s the way I process life, is through music. Whether it was Mormonism or heartbreak or joy or sadness, music has always been my go-to to see how I’m feeling and express it,” he says, referring to the religion in which he was raised, but walked away from several years ago.

Growing up, the star watched his six older brothers play in garage bands, which in turn inspired him to use computer programs to make music of his own. Singing came later; as a kid, his brothers called him Cookie Monster due to his voice’s raspy tone, which led him to doubt his talents as a singer. But before long, he quietly began recording himself. The first song he ever wrote was called “All By Himself.”

“I didn’t show it to anybody, but it felt so good to express something that I couldn’t quite express [in conversation],” he says of his early struggles with mental health.

By the time he cofounded Imagine Dragons in 2008 while at Brigham Young University, he had over 1,000 songs in his repertoire. The Dragons’ lineup currently includes Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon and bassist Ben McKee, whom he calls his “best friends.”

Shlomi Pinto/Getty Images

“I find so much fulfillment through the Dragons,” Reynolds says. “We have been through so much together as a trio that I think we have deep, mutual respect for each other. It’s like family, but also professional. We’ve been to therapy together as a band.”

As Reynolds prepares for the release of Imagine Dragons’ new album — and the July 30 kickoff of the band’s largest North American headlining tour to date — he feels he’s finally found his groove, in life and onstage. And if things must change, he’s ready to navigate whatever ebbs and flows are yet to come.

“I take this job really seriously. I know there’s a million people gunning and wanting to do exactly what I’m doing, so I feel very fortunate, and I try to do it to the best of my ability,” he says. “The album is really [about the] present, but it’s also looking into the past and the future, being a little fearful of what’s to come but excited — [it’s about] new beginnings.”

Imagine Dragons Take a Lighter Approach to Heavy Life Stuff on ‘Loom'

Imagine Dragons never got the memo that this is supposed to be an era of diminishing returns for big, ambitious, overbearing, oversharing pop-rock bands. It's been more than a decade since they released their career-making hits "Demons" and "Radioactive," yet they remain staples of modern rock radio as well as any high school football weight room where the coach won't allow swear-y rap. This summer, as a number of major acts have had to scale back their tours, the Dragons are out supporting Loom, their sixth album, with shows in 20,000 seat sheds. The LP continues the mix of heavy emotions and musical elasticity that's made them arena mainstays. "Been gone, I'm facing horrors that should never be said," frontman Dan Reynolds informs us early on, piloting a torrent of personal apocalypse on a life raft built from hip-hop, alt-rock, and EDM.

The Las Vegas band's last record was the double album, Mercury , which they released in two separate Acts . This time out, they weigh in with a relatively concise nine tracks, once again made with the help of their longtime collaborators, Swedish production duo Mathaman & Robin (Taylor Swift, Tove Lo, Brittany Spears). Stress abounds on the opening track "Wake Up," a bro-rap anthem about how to keep it together in a world where "everybody's coming for you" and there's "bodies dropping everywhere." Lead single "Eyes Closed" recalls the moody stomp of "Radioactive," as Reynolds sings about searching for mental clarity beyond medications, mantras, and meditations.

When they first showed up, Imagine Dragons were early adapters to the notion that you can mix and match various radio formats as long as the overall balance of why me angst and push through catharsis remained believable amidst all the savvy genre-juggling. By now they're old hands at it. J Balvin lends some Spanish verses to a bonus-track remix of "Eyes Closed," significantly upping its energy. "Kid" is an obsequiously spot-on Gorillaz homage. "Take Me to the Beach" piles up everyday, everyman grievances before hitting an escapist, Corona-lifting chorus, landing somewhere between an old-school rap-rock rant and a Jimmy Buffett beer o'clock bromide. "Fire In These Hills" is reflective, light-touch dance-pop with a sad, yacht-y sax melody. The album's most enjoyable moment is its lightest, "Nice to Meet You" a flirty, fleet-grooved tune that's as bright and warm as Coldplay at their most starry-eyed. Reynolds, who was recently divorced, sings about the myriad complications of pursuing a new crush, and the result is an honest depiction of a middle-aged guy fumbling his way back out there after a long time on the shelf.

Other songs take a harder look at post-breakup affliction, like the piano ballad "Don't Forget Me" and the more self-pitying "In Your Corner." To his credit, even at his most bitter, there's usually a Chris Martin-ian equanimity in his voice and writing, like he's learning from his angst, not just wallowing in it. "Every day wondering towards our North Star/Guess we got lost in the light," he sings with real empathy and searching resignation. on "Don't Forget Me." Such kind-vibes moments show that within the vast spaces these guys work in, there's always room for growth.

On their sixth studio album Loom , now available for pre-order on CD or vinyl via Kidinakorner and Interscope Records ahead of physical and streaming release Friday, June 28, 2024, Imagine Dragons overhauled their entire studio approach.

While their last album, 2021’s Mercury - Acts 1 & 2 , was a sprawling affair consisting of 32 tracks under the guidance of famed producer Rick Rubin, Loom is far more concise. Made up of just nine songs, the new album was recorded over the course of about a year and a half with longtime collaborators Mattman & Robin (Taylor Swift) on board to oversee the entire affair, a departure from previous projects which often featured a team of producers.

Working together in the studio with Mattman & Robin, Imagine Dragons scrapped entirely the early demos they had begun, with frontman Dan Reynolds opting instead to write new songs in the studio for the first time.

Relationships lie at the heart of Loom , with the album doubling as the first for Reynolds since his divorce was finalized last month.

“I think that with every record, it’s always just a reflection of life for me - throughout whatever that time period was,” said Reynolds during a phone conversation earlier this week. “There’s days that I’m feeling maybe nostalgic or sad or happy or jubilant or angry. I think the songs reflect that. And then we always try to put it together in a way that kind of summarizes the body of work,” he explained. “I think this record really is about a relationship: the end of it, the beginning, the middle,” Reynolds continued. “That’s kind of why we went with the title Loom : if something is looming, it’s not necessarily bad. It could be good, it could be bad. And there’s the idea of kind of the [album] cover being a sunset or a sunrise - and not knowing if it’s the end of something or the beginning of something.”

Recognized for their support of Ukraine, Imagine Dragons were recently named by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as ambassadors for United24. Partnering with Neon Trees frontman Tyler Glenn, Reynolds’ LOVELOUD fest helps the LGBTQ+ community as a 501(c)(3) non-profit, with Imagine Dragons supporting pediatric cancer as co-founders of the Tyler Robinson Foundation , all forms of activism which grew organically.

As one of the only artists in history with a whopping four RIAA diamond-certified singles, Imagine Dragons have moved nearly 75 million albums worldwide, a Herculean task in the internet streaming era that finds the band not only achieving success but maintaining and growing it over the course of about 15 years.

I spoke with Dan Reynolds about the songwriting process at the heart of the new album Loom , the influence of Prince and Weezer and a massive tour set to kick off July 30 in Camden, New Jersey, taking Imagine Dragons across the country through October. A transcript of our conversation, lightly edited for length and clarity, follows below.

Jim Ryan : I read that you’ve recorded a song a day almost every day since you were 12. What has that process kind of taught you about the craft of songwriting?

Dan Reynolds : I’ve recorded obsessively compulsively since I was 11. So, I don’t know what the tally is. But I have recorded thousands of songs. There are certainly days and weeks that I’m not writing - but it’s a lot. It’s a lot.

I think that what I learned is just not to overthink. I always get on the computer and put a microphone in front of me and just whatever the output is that day is just what it is in that moment. I try to move through it as quickly as possible and get everything out on the page - and not think about anything other than just creating a song for myself in the moment.

Ryan : How long did you work on the new album?

Reynolds : It was about a year and a half. We did it in Los Angeles at Conway Studios. With every record, I kind of do a lot at home in my studio. I write a lot of demos. It’s always over 100. And then we get in and the producer and I kind of go through them and pick them apart and redo them.

But, with this one, we actually had a different approach. We got into the studio with Mattman and Robin, who produced the record, and decided to just scratch it all and start fresh in the studio. And then we wrote for about six months in the studio.

So, it was a different process than ever before for us.

Ryan : Obviously, you guys have worked with Mattman & Robin a bit now over the years. But they seem to have an even bigger role this time around. What was it like working with them on Loom ?

Reynolds : Yeah, with this record it was really just solo produced - one producer that oversees the entire process. I think that helped with us being more concise, being a little more laser-pointed. I’ve also known them for a long time. So, I feel very comfortable with them.

I don’t typically like writing lyrics or melody in front of anybody. But they feel like family to me. So, it didn’t feel weird being vulnerable and sharing my lyrics or going over it with them. So, it was really a pretty streamlined, comfortable process for me.

Imagine Dragons pose ahead of the release of their sixth studio album 'Loom,' available on CD, vinyl ... [+] or for streaming via Kidinakorner and Interscope Records on Friday, June 28, 2024

Ryan : You’ve said that your albums tend to sort of sum up where you’re at at a given moment and that this particular moment sort of represents a bit of a happier stretch. How did that kind of inform the songwriting on Loom ?

Reynolds : Yeah, I think that with every record, it’s always just a reflection of life for me - throughout whatever that time period was. There’s days that I’m feeling maybe nostalgic or sad or happy or jubilant or angry. I think the songs reflect that. And then we always try to put it together in a way that kind of summarizes the body of work.

In this case, it’s nine songs - which is the shortest that we’ve ever done. And that was purposely. Because we just came off of this double record [ Mercury - Acts 1 & 2 ] with [producer] Rick Rubin that I’m really proud of - but it was also very verbose. I had a really hard time self-editing. So, we wanted to try to be more concise this time.

Ryan : One of my favorite tracks on Loom is “In Your Corner.” What were you kind of going for there?

Reynolds : That’s one of my favorites on the record. Just because I think it conceptually resonates with me in a more broad feeling of how I felt over the last couple of years.

I think this record really is about a relationship: the end of it, the beginning, the middle. That’s kind of why we went with the title Loom : if something is looming, it’s not necessarily bad. It could be good, it could be bad. And there’s the idea of kind of the [album] cover being a sunset or a sunrise - and not knowing if it’s the end of something or the beginning of something.

So, “In Your Corner” is really that feeling of loyalty but also heartache - and kind of being caught up in the middle of that and not really knowing what that means for the future when a relationship comes to an end. How do you go forward with that?

Ryan : There’s so much going on in “Kid.” How did you guys sort of go about constructing that track?

Reynolds : You know, it definitely is a song about speaking to my younger self - kind of advising my younger self: “Keep it together. Keep on keepin’ on and things will work out.”

In short, that really is the feel of that song. It started though with me kind of just mumbling. We came up with the beat and I kind of just had a distorted microphone. I was holding just a handheld SM58 and said “You’ve got to get yourself together kid” kind of in a mumble. And then I built on it. And that really happens to me all of the time - where I’ll just be lyrically improvising and then the words that are just kind of in my heart and head naturally come out. And, if it’s something that’s intriguing to me, then I’ll build on it. That’s always been the case since I was very young.

So, it’s just kind of like a stream of consciousness creation. And then I’ll pull out a notepad and a pen and start writing actual lyrics. But it often starts with me just saying whatever is being felt with that rhythm or melodic soundscape.

So, “Kid” is definitely one of the most uptempo. And it reminds me a lot of the early 2000s alternative radio that I consumed too much of.

Ryan : Something I find really interesting about Imagine Dragons is the way you guys still seem to really care about the idea of the album. There is a narrative arc that connects the songs on each of your records. How important is the idea of storytelling to you when it comes to songwriting?

Reynolds : I love it. Because I’m a kid of the 90s. I was born in ‘87.

One of my favorite records, that I was listening to the other day, was the Blue Album by Weezer. There’s no fat. It’s concise. You listen to it from start to finish and it kind of feels like you’re just living in this world of the Blue Album . You’re kind of peering into Rivers’ head. I always loved that.

I love the conciseness of a record like that. And I think that we were chasing kind of that on this - to find something that was very concise, digestible. You get to the end and you want to start it again, with ease, instead of it being so dense. And that it tells a story.

Again, I guess, coming back to the Blue Album , there are songs where I’m like, “Oh, this is a funny band.” But then there are songs that are serious. I think that I enjoy that. There are moments on this record that are very playful, like “Kid” or “Take me to the Beach.” And then there’s moments that are more self-reflecting and serious like “Find These Hills” or “In Your Corner.”

Yeah, I love albums. I always have. I think that’s all we know how to create. And that’s what we’ll probably always do.

Ryan : I saw you guys last summer with Weezer actually. At FEQ in Quebec.

Reynolds : Oh, they put on such a great show! We opened for them so early - before we were signed I think. We opened for them at The Joint at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas. That was such a huge moment for us.

Ryan : You’ve got a real knack for crafting these big, bombastic - but, ultimately, very catchy - choruses. Whether it’s the catchy music in video games, or the classical composers I’ve heard you reference, who or what would sort of start to loom large for you in terms of crafting choruses like that?

Reynolds : I think the majority of my melodic creation comes from piano. I played concert piano from 6 to 16 - classical piano. So, it was a lot of Beethoven, Bach, Chopin. A lot of it is so melodic. There’s a lot of thirds and fifths and harmonies.

And then, on the flip side, I was listening to a lot of Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan - those classic singer songwriters. So, I think the melodic sensibility comes from a lot of that. When I listen to Dragons songs, or I play them on a piano, a lot of the melody work - “Follow You” and things like that - the way it builds is very like classical piano.

So, I think that, whether I know it or not, subconsciously, I’m drawing on a lot of my youth and classical piano.

Ryan : Well, looking ahead to the tour this summer… Obviously, you guys have developed such a strong reputation as a live act. What can fans expect this time around?

Reynolds : This will be our biggest tour yet - both numerically and also production wise. We really feel like we’re confident in our zone right now. We understand what the Dragons are and what the live show could be. We’re always chasing it to be bigger and more eccentric and more dramatic.

We grew up in Las Vegas. I was born and raised in Las Vegas. So, I love the eccentricity and the theatricalness of this city. And I think we try to represent that over-the-top, eclectic, eccentric, theatrical nature to our shows. So, they really are an experience in more than just playing the songs start to finish from the record. There’s a lot of poetry and narrative and visual work and things that we try to do to bring the fans into kind of our world for that hour and a half or two hours that we have them.

And we’re gonna take this all over the world. The band is at a strange point now where it’s bigger outside the U.S. than it is even in the U.S. So, we’ll be spending a lot of time overseas in Asia, Europe and South America. And I love that.

Ryan : It’s been interesting to watch the band’s trajectory. Because it’s one thing to achieve success - but it’s another thing entirely to maintain it. You guys haven’t just maintained it, you’ve steadily built it bigger and bigger. What’s been kind of that approach to that longer game?

Reynolds : I think it’s twofold.

One - our live shows are really our bread and butter. We put a lot of time into it. All of the guys are really great musicians or went to Berklee School of Music for jazz originally. So, we really have fun with these songs live.

And we take our live show as our first priority. That has helped. Because people who have been to the shows throughout the years just keep coming and keep telling friends and bringing new people. And, also, there’s just so many families that come to shows. So, you have kids that are growing up to Imagine Dragons whose parents listened to Imagine Dragons. And it just keeps growing in that sense.

And we’ve also just stuck to our guns and just done what the Dragons do. We’ve never tried to appease anyone else or do something for someone else. It’s just an honest reflection of myself and the guys - for better or worse.

And I think that has helped the band. Because, at the end of the day, Dragons are always going to be what Dragons are. And it’s just an honest reflection of who I am as a writer.

So, I think all of those things have helped us with longevity - just sticking to our guns.

Ryan : Working the way you have as ambassadors for United24, working with the Tyler Robinson Foundation, your involvement with LOVELOUD - how important is it to give back and stay involved?

Reynolds : We’ve just kind of followed the path of least resistance. So many opportunities have opened up to be part of important causes that we care about.

We've lost people in our lives to cancer. So, naturally, we started a pediatric cancer foundation. And that just kind of came together years ago. I also grew up in a very conservative religious background with a lot of friends who were gay. That was such a conflicting spot for them. So, then I started a foundation with one of my dear friends, Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees, who is queer. We started LOVELOUD Foundation and it just kind of came together on its own. Same with causes we care about whether it’s United or Ukraine. We play a lot in Ukraine. And I love the people there. I’ve spent a lot of time with them.

So, I wouldn’t say we’re on some heroic quest or doing anything big. We just kind of go where the road takes us.

Ryan : You’ve worked so hard to promote equality. And I feel like that’s a role that musicians in particular are well-suited for. Growing up, I watched Prince a lot. Prince would dress different and act different and speak different. And he made it not just OK to be different but cool. I think that helped the average person embrace the simple idea of different. David Bowie in the 60s and 70s, same thing. How important of a role is that for music or musicians to play?

Reynolds : I think just being yourself is rock and roll. I’ve never really identified with rock and roll being drugs, sex, rock and roll. Rock and roll, to me, is be yourself no matter what. No matter who is watching, who is listening in, no matter who hates it or loves it - be yourself.

And I totally agree. Prince is one of my favorite artists and is a great reflection of that. Prince always was just Prince. And that was just so f—ing cool. And he was perfect at it. Because it was him.

And so I think that’s always been our goal: just to be ourselves. Be honest. And just keep doing that until this is done.
