Grab a pint and learn about the iconic draught stout, plus new innovative brews, at the Guinness Open Gate Brewery, a sister location to Dublin’s original brewery and the only Guinness brewery in America. Located on the site of the historic Calvert distillery in Baltimore County, 10 miles from downtown Baltimore, Open Gate offers guided tours with beer experts and optional tastings. The brewery also offers a taproom with a generous selection of finger foods and their 1817 Restaurant, which celebrates Chesapeake Bay seafood and classic Irish pub dishes.

You can drop by the brewery to visit, drink, and eat, but you’ll need to purchase tickets to go on a tour. Pre-booking is always a good idea, but drop-ins are welcome, depending on availability.

First-come, first-serve on-site parking is available. If your entire crew will be drinking, consider taking public transportation. The MARC and Amtrak train stations are just a Lyft ride away from the brewery, and the MTA City Yellow bus line stops just outside their front doors.

Monday-Wednesday 3 p.m.–9 p.m. Thursday 3 p.m.–10 p.m. Friday 12 p.m.–10 p.m. Saturday 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Sunday 11 a.m.–9 p.m.

If you’re coming thirsty, consider the Perfect Pint Academy tour ($15 per person) which features an hour-long tour and tasting with a beer expert. You’ll learn about Guinness’ history and try your hand at their famous two-part pour. Guests must be age 21 and older to participate. Guided tours with headsets and optional tastings are also available. The brewery serves a menu of Guinness beers brewed in Baltimore and a selection brewed in Dublin.

Get lucky at the brewery’s annual St. Patrick’s Day weekend celebrations featuring special beers, food, and roving entertainment. During the rest of the year, the brewery hosts weekend brunches, University of Maryland alumni nights, and appreciation nights for U.S. military, first responders, and members of the hospitality industry.

When Guinness debuted its Baltimore brewery in 2018, it was the iconic brand’s first American outpost in over 60 years. Bringing Irish beer to Maryland has proven to be a winning recipe as just last month Guinness Open Gate Brewery welcomed its one millionth customer. The signature harp symbol greets guests as they enter the three-story beerhouse, which offers tours, sells Guinness swag, and serves food and a variety of brews to suit every kind of beer lover. If you haven’t already been among the million customers so far, here are five reasons to get your butt down to Guinness Open Gate.

Five reasons to visit Baltimore's Guinness brewery

1.  you’ll get to try experimental beers made only here.

Drinkers can choose from more than 15 beers on tap, including a number of distinctive Maryland-made brews. Over the Moon Milk Stout appeals to fans of hearty dark beers while the Guinness IPA blends tropical notes with East and West Coast brewing styles. Now, although most beer aficionados associate Guinness with its stout, the Baltimore brewery’s flagship beer, the Guinness Blonde, will win over fans of light and citrusy beverages.

2.  Beer geeks will delight in the informative tour

Guests touring the beerhouse will learn how the beverage is made, along with lots of interesting facts about the brand’s history. For instance, did you know that the famous toucan used to promote Guinness was dreamt up in the 1930s by artist John Gilroy? Another exhibit takes a closer look at how the brewers age their beer in wooden barrels. True beer buffs can even sign up for an event that digs deeper into how the beer is made.

3.  Guinness supports the community

The beer maker has invested in food banks, job training groups and legal aid supporting Baltimore’s black community. Most recently, it teamed up with Black Women Build Baltimore, to create the tea-infused High Vis Cream Ale. The nonprofit teaches carpentry, plumbing and other skills to rebuild abandoned homes in West Baltimore.

4.  Guests won’t leave hungry

Beer and history aren’t the only reasons to pay a visit. The brewery’s culinary talent can whip up Maryland specialties like crab dip flatbread or Irish favorites such as Guinness beef stew. And check the calendar for multi-course dinners that pair Guinness beers with Irish grub.

5.  Is there a better place to celebrate St Patrick’s Day?

Besides jetting off to Dublin, spending the day at Guinness Open Gate is hands down the best way to celebrate this most Irish of holidays. The brewery is hosting four weekends of St Patrick’s Day celebrations this month, with live music, trivia and special edition beers. The two-acre lawn will be transformed into an “Irish village”, with food stalls and experiences where guests can print their picture on a beer glass and learn how to pour the perfect pint from the experts. Located just 10 miles from downtown Baltimore and 30 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., the Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House is conveniently located and part of an exciting and growing brewing scene in Maryland.

The first part of the brewery's name takes inspiration from the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Dublin, where the company has experimented in beer for more than a century. The second part of the name, "Barrel House," is a nod to the long history of Guinness brewers maturing beer in wood barrels. In addition, the space was once home to a historic whiskey distillery, so the site boasts a venerable heritage of barrel-aging.

It is the home of Guinness Blonde, along with new Guinness beers created for the U.S. market and experimental brews you can only try at the brewery. The creation of this world-class brewery, barrel house and visitor center, and development of packaging and warehousing operations has generated more than 200 jobs and represents an investment by Guinness' parent company Diageo of approximately $90 million in the Maryland project.

How to get there

If you’re making a long weekend of the trip or folding it into your grander road trip plans, consider making Baltimore or Washington, D.C. home base for your visit. The Guinness Brewery and Barrel House is located at 5100 Washington Boulevard in Halethorpe, Maryland, just a 10-mile drive from Baltimore or a 30-mile drive from D.C.

For day-trippers, driving is your best bet, so make sure to have a responsible designated driver lined up. The brewery is easily accessible, almost directly off of Exit 3 on I195, and offers dedicated parking on-site.

The brewery is open to the public Monday through Wednesday 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm, Thursday 3:00 pm - 10:00 pm, Friday 12:00 pm - 10:00 pm, Saturday 11:00 am - 10:00 pm, and Sunday 11:00 am - 9:00 pm.

The on-site restaurant, The 1817, is open Thursday and Friday 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm, Saturday 11:00 am - 10:00 am, and Sunday 11:00 am - 9:00 pm.

What are the food options?

The food options are many! The Guinness Brewery and Barrel House is home to two dining experiences with cuisine inspired by Ireland’s rich culinary heritage, local Maryland delights, and recipes designed to enhance the Guinness tasting experience.

The Brewery’s taproom menu includes casual, delicious fare like Chesapeake Crab Poutine, Oyster Po’boys, and a decadent Dubliner Irish Dip.

The 1817, named for the year that Guinness first came to America, offers a wider menu with daily oyster selections, small plates, flatbreads, and mouth-watering main courses like Guinness & Beef Stew, the 1817 Burger, Sea Scallops, and a Prime Cut Delmonico. The dessert menu is equally alluring, and the side options include real Irish brown bread with Kerrygold butter. Each menu item points guests to the best Guinness brew to accompany their food.

The Guinness Open Gate Brewery, located just 5 minute walk away from the Guinness Storehouse, in Dublin City, is a creative brewing space where you are encouraged to explore different flavours, finding the perfect brew for you.

At the Guinness Open Gate Brewery, their brewers are given the creative licence to dream in beer. It's located right in the heart of "Gower Gulch," near the corner of Gower Street and Sunset Boulevard) - hence the new name.

In 1972, Columbia left its Hollywood studios at Sunset & Gower (to save money) and moved over the hill to the San Fernando Valley, where they shared "Burbank Studios" with Warner Bros .

In 1978, Columbia Pictures made the Guinness Book of World Records by paying the highest price ever paid ($9,500,000.) for the rights to the Broadway stage hit " Annie " (which, as it turned out, wasn't the wisest investment in the studio's illustrious history.)

But eventually, Columbia was bought by Sony Entertainment of Japan, and they finally settled into the historic M-G-M Studios lot in Culver City, where they remain today, along with Sony's other label, TriStar Pictures.

Now that Columbia has moved on, the old studio lot they deserted isn't just sitting idly by. The re-named " Sunset-Gower Studios " no longer has a permanent film production company to call its own (hence the geographical name), but it keeps busy renting out its ample sound stages for assorted television and indie movie productions. The studio employees between 2,500 and 3,000 people, depending upon the time of year.

As of 2013, the three major TV productions on the lot are Showtime's hit serial killer, " Dexter " and ABC's " Private Practice " & " Scandal ".

But they also shoot " Let's Make a Deal " at Sunset-Gower, as well as a host of TV courtroom shows (i.e. " Judge Judy ", " Divorce Court ", etc.)

The public is invited to the live tapings of these sitcoms when they take place. To find out whether anything is taping there right now, call " Audiences Unlimited " (see separate page), and ask them if there are any free tickets to shows taped at Sunset-Gower. Then you can go inside to watch the TV taping, and walk into the studio which gave us " Gandhi ," " A Man For All Seasons " and " Ghostbusters ."

Update : In late 2008, Sunset-Gower studio was merged with KTLA studios (next door), to create the new Capital Studios . The lot will still be known as "Sunset Gower", while KTLA will be known as "Sunset-Bronson". Together, the new dual studio will cover 28 acres, with 23 sound stages and 700,000 square feet of office production space.

The PourTruck Package    (This is a host bar)  You pick your favorite Beers, Wines etc. Served in style with our truck and bartender(s) 

Price is per pour and depends on guest count.

Pour It Like You Stole It    (Truck Rental) That’s right we will rent you the truck if it is not booked, and you can serve yourself. And Pour it like you stole it! The Pour truck is rented by the hour with a two hour min and does not include beer.

Who’s Party is this Package    (Cash Bar) 

This one you pick the beers, wines, ciders etc. and your guests pay for their drinks as they go. We are able to provide a cash bar option for your wedding, party, or event. Keep in mind we hold minimums.
