Bermuda Is Ready For Visitors To Easily Enjoy An Island Getaway With New Covid Travel Protocols & Direct Flights

Bermuda has announced updated COVID-19 protocols, offering new travel guidelines that will streamline the process for vaccinated travellers visiting the island by air. Effective March 7, 2022, the revised guidelines will continue to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors, while making it even more convenient for visitors.

“News of Bermuda’s relaxed travel guidelines has been met with great enthusiasm from travellers who can’t wait to return to our island,” said Charles H. Jeffers II, Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) CEO. “Our hotels and businesses are open with the Bermudian hospitality for which we are known. As spring and summer approach, there’s never been a better time to visit.”

Bermuda’s new guidelines will require all visitors to show proof of current vaccination status and a negative COVID-19 test result for travellers aged 2 and older. Supervised antigen tests within two days of arrival and PCR tests within four days of arrival are allowed.

• Travellers will need to complete the Travellers Authorisation form with this information 24 – 48 hours prior to arrival. Note: The Travellers Authorisation form fee has been reduced from $75 to $40, which will include return testing if necessary.
• Only fully vaccinated travelers are allowed in the country. Fully vaccinated is defined as having received a full course of a COVID-19 vaccine with at least 14 days having passed since the last dose and before arrival in Bermuda. Booster shots will not be required.
• Children 12 years and older must be fully vaccinated. Children eleven years and younger will take on the vaccination status of the guardian travelling with them.
• No further testing will be required upon arrival. If country of origin requires a test to return, Bermuda will automatically schedule and provide return testing to travellers.

“People are ready to travel, and Bermuda is eager to welcome them back,” said Douglas Trueblood, BTA Chief Sales and Marketing Officer. “While we remain dedicated to taking the utmost precautions, our new guidelines have been designed with convenience and comfort in mind, in addition to safety. Additionally, with several returning daily flights this spring, the island is easily accessible once again.”

Bermuda airlift updates include:

• JetBlue’s daily air service from Boston to Bermuda will begin on March 27
• American Airlines will begin daily service to Bermuda from Philadelphia on April 5
• United Airlines will begin daily service to Bermuda out of Newark on May 6
• Air Canada will resume flights to Bermuda on May 1

Bermuda is beautiful, safe and open to visitors – we welcome you to the island for business!

The government of Bermuda has put in place stringent travel protocols to protect you and Bermuda.

Before travelling to Bermuda, you must complete the travel authorisation form online.

What to Know 

Before arrival, get a travel authorisation.

You will need:

• To have no symptoms
• A valid email address
• Proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR or Antigen test taken no more than 3 days before departure – more information
• Non resident travellers must be fully vaccinated.
• To consent to having a COVID-19 PCR test on arrival
• To sign an agreement to abide by the legal requirement to quarantine in your accommodation as instructed
• Visitors 2 years and under: do not require testing to instead upload government issued photo ID as proof of age.
• Complete Travel Authorisation form which can be found on the Bermuda Government website.

Travel Authorisation applications are vetted between 9 am and 8 pm daily, prior to approval (see below for requirements and the process). Emergency Travel Authorisations may be issued on the day of travel by the COVID-19 Helpline at +1 (441) 444-2498 or 1-833-570-2594. If your Travel Authorisation is not approved before your flight, you cannot travel to Bermuda.

By applying for a Travel Authorisation, visitors and residents agree to comply with Bermuda’s quarantine and public health laws instructions at all times. If you test positive at any time you shall self-isolate at your accommodation, at your cost. Health insurance options are available and should be considered.

Immunised travellers: Bermuda’s protocols for immunised travellers can be viewed  here . Business travellers who have been immunised are permitted to have face to face meetings following receipt of a negative COVID-19 arrival test result but meetings should be held in well-ventilated meeting rooms whenever possible. On Arrival, Travellers Must:

• Show a copy of their Travel Authorisation
• Show a copy of their pre-departure COVID-19 negative test result taken no more than 3 days before departure. For reference, the day you test is day 0
• Undergo PCR COVID-19 testing at the Airport. Those with a pre-departure PCR COVID-19 test must quarantine at their accommodation until results are ready, which is usually within 24 hours. This applies to adults and children ages 2 and up. Expedited results are availble for $200
• Wear a face mask and practise physical distancing to the greatest extent possible.

On-island, Travellers Must:

• Practise physical distancing, hygiene and mask-wearing in all public spaces where there is close contact with others.
• The location and time of each of your tests will automatically be booked for you, so please do not arrange separate appointments. You will receive email reminders 24 hours before each test. To reschedule the time, please call the government’s COVID-19 hotline at +1 (441) 444-2498 (open 9 am–9 pm).

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

All persons traveling between the United States and Bermuda are required to present a passport to enter Bermuda or re-enter the United States. Travelers with questions concerning travel to Bermuda may contact the British Embassy in Washington, DC or any of the British Consulate General offices across the United States. The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Bermuda.

Safety and Security

Crime:  By comparison to the United States, Bermuda has a low to moderate crime rate. Recent crime statistics are available at the official website of the  Bermuda Police Service . Valuables left unattended in public areas, in unsecured hotel rooms, or on rental motorbikes are vulnerable to theft. Criminals have been known to target visitors on motorbikes and at popular tourist attractions, and purse snatchings, perpetrated by thieves riding motorbikes, and muggings have occurred in the past. The back streets of the City of Hamilton have been the setting for assaults, particularly at night after the bars close. 

Travelers should exercise caution when walking after dark or visiting out-of-the-way places on the island as they can be vulnerable to theft and assault, and because narrow and dark roadways can contribute to accidents.

Travelers should note the presence of gangs and illegal drug activity in Bermuda. There have been no reports of gang violence targeted towards visitors to Bermuda, although gang-related shooting incidents have occurred and continue to occur throughout the island.

Victims of Crime: U.S. citizen victims of sexual assault are encouraged to contact the U.S. Consulate for assistance.  Report crimes to the local police at 1 (441) 295-0011 and contact the U.S. Consulate at 1 (441) 295-1342.  Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

Domestic Violence:   U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are encouraged to contact the Consulate for assistance.

Beach Safety: Swimming areas at some popular beaches around Bermuda can have dangerous rip currents, and swimming in the ocean is not the same as swimming in a pool or lake. Wind, waves, the change of the tide, the slope of the beach, and other factors can cause strong currents and difficult swimming conditions to be present in the water even on the calmest days. U.S. citizens have drowned in Bermuda due to these conditions. Only swim when there is a lifeguard present and always remain in sight of them. Do not dive into water of unknown depth. Tourism: The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules with regards to best practices and safety inspections are regularly enforced.  Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities.  In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country.  Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance.  U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .  

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to local laws.  If you violate Bermuda’s laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.  

Bermuda Customs routinely boards visiting cruise ships with drug sniffing dogs and will arrest persons found to have any illegal drugs in their cabin. Penalties for possessing, using, or trafficking in illegal drugs in Bermuda are severe, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and/or heavy fines. Having a prescription for marijuana or any other drug currently illegal in Bermuda will not protect you from arrest or prosecution for possession of that illegal drug.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad and the Department of Justice website.

Arrest Notification:   If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Consulate immediately.  See our webpage for further information.

Special Circumstances: The Department of State warns United States citizens against taking any type of firearm, ammunition or component of a firearm into Bermuda. The Bermuda government strictly enforces its laws restricting the entry of weapons and ammunition. Entering Bermuda with a firearm, some bladed instruments, an ammunition magazine, or even a single round of ammunition is illegal, even if the weapon or ammunition is taken into the country unintentionally. Permission to import or own a gun in Bermuda must be sought in advance from the  Bermuda Police Service . Any privately owned firearms must be secured at Bermuda Police Headquarters. Violations may result in arrest, convictions, and potentially long prison sentences. Pepper sprays and stun guns are considered dangerous weapons in Bermuda and are illegal. 

Counterfeit and Pirated Goods: Don’t buy counterfeit and pirated goods, even if they are widely available. Although counterfeit and pirated goods are prevalent in many countries, they may still be illegal according to local laws. You may also pay fines or have to give them up if you bring them back to the United States. See the U.S. Department of Justice website for more information.

LGBTQI+ Travelers:   There are no legal restrictions on same-sex sexual relations or the organization of LGBTQI+ events in Bermuda.

Travelers with Disabilities:   Individuals with disabilities may find accessibility and accommodation very different from what is available in the United States. Bermuda does not currently have legislation on access to transportation, communication, and public buildings for persons with disabilities. Very few hotels would be considered fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). We recommend you always check with the hotel or property where you will be staying to see if their dimensions for rooms, doors, and bathrooms are ADA-compliant. Outside of the City of Hamilton, sidewalks are generally unavailable or not suitable for wheelchairs. Public ferries are handicap accessible, as are some of the public buses, but most bus stops are not. Handicap accessible taxis are available for hire in Bermuda.

Ambulance services are widely available, but training and availability of emergency responders may be below U.S. standards.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance overseas. Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Vaccinations:  Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Air Quality: Visit AirNow Department of State for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Consulate maintains a list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Health facilities in general: Adequate medical care is available for routine procedures, though extremely expensive. The only hospital in Bermuda performs general surgery and has an emergency room and intensive care unit. Serious or complex medical programs will likely require medical evacuation to the United States. Most Bermudian health care providers including the local hospital do not accept overseas insurance and will expect payment at the time of service.

Pharmaceuticals: U.S. prescriptions are not honored in Bermuda.  It will be necessary to visit a Bermuda doctor and have a new prescription written if you need to have it filled in Bermuda. Most common medications are available locally upon presentation of a prescription from a Bermuda doctor.  If you are taking prescription medication, you must inform Bermuda customs officials at the point of entry. Medicines must be in labeled containers, and travelers should carry a copy of the written prescription and a letter from the physician or pharmacist confirming the reason the medicine is prescribed.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with the Ministry of Health to ensure the medication is legal in Bermuda.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:   Driving on the island is on the left, British-style, and the maximum speed limit is 15 mph in Hamilton and 21 mph on the rest of the island. Under Bermudian law, non-residents are not allowed to own, rent, or drive four-wheeled vehicles, except for a limited number of all electric rental mini cars that hold two passengers. Non-residents must rely on taxis, buses, or rental scooters.

Traffic Laws:   Traffic accidents involving motorbikes are common in Bermuda.  Any U.S. citizen visiting Bermuda who chooses to rent a motorbike or electric mini car should exercise extreme caution on the roadways as road conditions and local driving practices unfamiliar to U.S. drivers could increase the chances of mishap or injury. 

Public Transportation:   There is a regular, island-wide public bus and ferry service, and daily and weekly passes are available at the central bus terminal, or Visitors’ Service Bureau or ferry terminal in Hamilton. Bus schedules can be viewed  here , and ferry schedules can be viewed here .

Aviation Safety Oversight: The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Bermuda’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Bermuda’s air carrier operations.  Further information may be found on the FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel: Mariners planning travel to Bermuda should check for U.S. maritime advisories and alerts .  Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings . Bermuda Travel Authorization Visa: What to Know If Cruising to Bermuda This Summer

If your summer cruise takes you to Bermuda, you must apply for a Bermuda health authorization visa before being allowed to embark on the cruise ship.

What is a Bermuda Travel Authorization Visa?

This is a health process that all visitors, both by air and sea, need to complete in order to visit the island during the pandemic. It’s part of the country’s entry requirements and needs to be approved before you are allowed to visit. This process is separate from your cruise ticket and contract and needs to be completed on your own. The cruise line is not responsible for making sure you have secured the health visa before your cruise.

It should be noted that the cruise lines have been working with the Bermuda government to try to find ways around this process but have not been successful as of this writing. The health visa will have to be done for the foreseeable future.

It’s also important to note that the Bermuda Travel Authorization Visa must be obtained by every cruise ship passenger, regardless of whether they actually plan to disembark upon arrival or not.

Bermuda Travel Requirements for Visitors Arriving by Cruise Ship

All Bermuda visitors arriving as cruise ship passengers aged 2 and over require an approved Travel Authorization before the cruise ship departs from the homeport terminal if Bermuda is the first port of call, or before arrival to Bermuda if Bermuda is not the first port of call.

Children under 2 years old do not need to apply for a Travel Authorization.

All non-resident passengers aged 12 and older must be fully vaccinated to be landed in Bermuda.

Unvaccinated children aged 11 and under are welcome to enter Bermuda with a vaccinated parent or guardian. Those children will take on the vaccination status of the parent or guardian traveling with them and will be allowed off of the ship.

Cruise operators that are calling to Bermuda this summer include Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean,and Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

How to Complete the Bermuda Travel Authorization

The health visa is easy to fill by going to the Bermuda Travel Authorization website, uploading the proper documentation, and paying the $40 fee (Visa or Mastercard only).

You will then receive the paperwork by email once approved. Due to processing times, this should be done ahead of your cruise.

As of May 2022, this process is still in effect. Check with your cruise line to make sure you satisfy the correct paperwork.

It’s your responsibility to ensure you have all the proper documentation to board the ship and enter each of the countries your cruise visits. We’ll require government-issued identification to board. And government authorities may require you to have a visa or meet other requirements.

Names Must Match If you've had a name change, and the name used across your documents does not match, you will need to take an extra step. Learn more

Cruising With Kids That Aren't Yours When a minor (age 17 and under) travels without their legal guardian, an accompanying adult must present a notarized form signed by the child's guardian. Learn more

• U.S. Birth Certificates must be the original or an official document issued by the government.

• Permanent Resident Card (Alien Resident Card "ARC" OR Green Card) AND Valid Passport from Country of Citizenship
• Guests must bring their physical Permanent Resident Card and it must be original – no photocopies.
• Passports must be valid at least 6 months after your cruise ends.
• Guests age 16 and older whose ARC has no photo must present a valid government issued photo ID
• Barbados & Martinique require ARC guests to provide a valid passport.

• Medicare Card - Can be used as the only identification for children when all guests share the same last name.
• Original (or Certified) Birth Certificate - If the parent's name differs from the child.

* Sailings that originate and end in ports within Australia that do not include a visit to an overseas port outside of Australia. (Note that Queensland cruises that include Willis Island are considered domestic cruises) . If an itinerary leaves Australia, then guests must use a Passport.

What you need to know.

The Bermuda Arrival Card is a single-entry travel document, and it is valid for 3 months.

The Bermuda Arrival Card is for visitors and tourism purposes only.

It is meant to gather travel and contact information about the visitors.

This card doesn't replace a visa. If you need a visa to enter Bermuda, please, apply for one in advance.

You can apply for the Bermuda Arrival Card online with us.

To apply for this travel document, your passport must be valid for at least six months after your exit day from Bermuda, and it has to have one blank page.

If you are arriving in Bermuda by air or by yacht, you can and need to apply for this travel document.

If you are arriving by cruise, you don’t need to complete any entry form.

Children also need to apply for a Bermuda Arrival Card to enter this country.

You can apply for this document the same day of your travel to Bermuda, but we advise you to apply in advance to avoid delays.

Currently, there are no COVID-19 requirements to enter Bermuda.

Bermuda has long been a favorite destination for honeymooners and those who love to escape the business of daily life. This island is renowned for its stunning beaches, which remain largely untouched, great golf courses, and stunning coastal resorts. What’s not to love about Bermuda?

Getting to Bermuda has never been easier! But before you go, it is mandatory to complete the digital Bermuda Arrival Card prior to your arrival on the island. This is not a visa, but a simple form to inform authorities of your travel purpose, health status, and if you have anything to declare. What is the Bermuda Arrival Card?

It’s a simple form that the Bermuda Tourism Authority (BTA) requires visitors to complete before arrival, to capture visitor details such as emergency contact details, critical tourism statistics, and more. It is not a visa , so if you need a visa to visit, live, or work in Bermuda, please make sure to apply in advance.

It is the same arrival card that travelers needed to fill out before the pandemic started and is meant as an online visitor arrivals process for Bermuda . The arrival card replaces the Bermuda Travel Authorization form that was in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the associated forty-dollar fee.

The simple online form will take less than a few minutes to complete online , and it lets you complete all customs procedures faster at the airport. You also do not need to fill out the pink arrival card that you’ll be offered on the airplane.

Who needs the Bermuda Arrival Card?

All non-resident travelers arriving by air at L. F. Wade International Airport must complete the digital form accurately and go through the approval process before arriving in the country. Even those air passengers that already have an approved Travel Authorization that they previously completed, must obtain the Bermuda Arrival Card.

Non-residents that are arriving by sea, for example, by cruise ship, are not required to complete the digital form for visitors.

Validity of the Bermuda Arrival Card

The Bermuda Arrival Card is a single-entry document and is valid for your stay of up to 90 days in Bermuda. If you want to re-enter the country, the Bermuda government requires you to complete the form again, so they can accurately capture visitor data.

Transiting through Bermuda

It is not necessary to fill out this form if you are just transiting through Bermuda at the airport, and do not enter the country.

When should I apply for the Bermuda Arrival Card?

You can apply for the Bermuda Arrival Card on the same day of your travel to this country, but you must ensure you have the deliverable before arriving in Bermuda. We advise you to apply before your travel date to avoid any problems or delays.

How can I apply for the Bermuda Arrival Card with iVisa?
