What’s the Difference Between a Mummy and Regular Sleeping Bag Liner?

The only difference between a mummy and a regular sleeping bag liner is the shape . The shapes are based on different types of sleeping bags, since a sleeping bag liner is originally meant to be used inside it.

If you plan to use your sleeping bag liner as travel sheets, then the shape doesn’t make a whole lot of difference.

Who Should Travel with a Travel Sleep Sheet?

Travel sleep sheets are good for any type of traveler. But if you’re traveling on a budget or are headed out on a long-term trek — backpack-only — then a sleeping bag liner is a good idea. They’re also for you if you just need a little extra warmth!

Perhaps a travel sleep sheet is most important for those of us who are germaphobes or are sleeping at more highly trafficked but likely lower maintained venues, such as hostels.

Who Should NOT Use Sleeping Bag Liners?

We would not suggest sleeping sacks for adults who are claustrophobic, as you might feel uncomfortable when you have your travel sleep sack fully sealed.

You are also less likely to need travel sheets if you’re staying at a hotel or resort, unless you’re a germaphobe or simply looking for more protection.

Should You Make Your Own Travel Sheets?

While there are options to DIY and make your own travel sheet, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re using silk fabric . Cotton is heavy and bulky, which you don’t want in a sleeping bag liner if you’re trying to pack light.

I traveled with a cotton travel sheet on my RTW trip , and it was three times the size of other travelers sheets, which were silk or microfiber! I bought my sheet at the time because it was the cheapest, but for a little more cash, I could have packed lighter and saved space (which is especially important on a long-term trip).

What’s the Best Fabric to Choose?

When it comes to picking out the best sleeping bag liner for you, we highly recommend avoiding cotton whenever possible because of its bulk and weight.

Microfibre blends are the most cost-effective, easy to wash, and lightweight to carry. I travel with one similar to this travel sheet and highly recommend it.

If you’re able to dish out a few extra dollars, then silk sleeping bag liners are the best sleeping bag liner choice. They are incredibly lightweight and tiny, making them easy to pack. Plus they’re breathable and adapt to the weather to keep you from being too hot or cold.

What’s my Recommended Sleeping Bag Liner?

Whats microfiber feel like? Texture sensitive

It’s very soft, in my opinion. Not like a fleece but not like a silk.

The problem with silk is it doesn’t stretch, so the bag tends to rip along the seams after a while. It would help if it was a stretch silk like they use for clothing but I haven’t seen one.

Stretch Silk would be a great option. Alternatively try the Microfiber Blends mentioned in the article 🙂

This depends on how often your travel cot is used along with what its used for. Its always best to have a few sheets available for your travel cot so you can change whenever.

Will these fit my cot, crib or cot bed mattress?

Unfortunately these will only fit a cot mattress the size of 65 x 95 cm. These are typically 'travel cot' sized mattress'. We do stock bedding for 120 x 60 cot , 40 x 90 crib and 140 x 70 cot bed on our website. These are all super-soft cotton and we also stock these all in waterproof.

Do i need a mattress protector?

It is advised you use the sheet with a mattress protector. This helps keep the mattress cleaner for longer. This can also prolong the life of certain baby bedding.

This is a beautiful blanket. It's light weight but warm, somehow. It's a light gray just like I needed and the pattern is lovely. My only complaint at all is that it snags kind of easily. Though it had some shrinkage and wrinkles after we washed it, the sateen fabric outperformed other organic sheets and proved to be both soft and strong. One at-home tester highlighted how it stood out for its smooth and lightweight feel.

We were very impressed with the quality of this set. In fact, it's one of the most durable sheet fabrics we've ever tested. It also earned high ratings and praise from our testers, with one calling it a "decadent experience" to sleep on. Though it's expensive, it lives up to its elegant "Hotel" name, and you can often find it on sale.

Parachute Home Brushed Cotton Sheet Set

This novelty set has a basic percale weave with a brushed surface so you get a unique mix of lightweight and crisp plus soft and cozy . The brushed surface is somewhat similar to flannel's construction, yet the fuzziness is much more minimal and not as hot.

Unsurprisingly, this sheet set was rated softer than most percales we've tested. Our panel of reviewers loved how it felt and noted its relaxed appearance. And although brushed fabric can often easily show signs of wear, this one stood up well to our durability tests without significant shrinkage or pilling.

Cuddledown Hotel Sateen Sheet Set

Cotton sheets can look crumpled and messy at times (even when you take them out of the dryer right away), but this set has a wrinkle-resistant finish and looked the smoothest after we washed it. And because it’s certified by OEKO-TEX, you don’t need to worry about unsafe chemical levels from the finish.

The cotton is also combed to remove short, poking fibers, and testers gave it top marks for feeling smooth. Although the fabric didn't perform as well in our strength test, it was durable overall in laundering tests, with minimal shrinkage.

Our reviewers gave this set high ratings across the board, especially raving about the comfort. How we test cotton sheets

Besides validating that the sheets are 100% cotton (as opposed to a blend with synthetics), our fiber scientists rigorously test the sheets in our Textiles Lab and with real consumer testers. Here's how we evaluate the sets:

✔️ Fabric strength: Our specialized tensile strength machine (called an Instron, pictured here) pulls swatches of fabric until they break, letting us know how strong each material is.

✔️ Dimensional stability: This is a fancy term for whether the sheets keep their shape (i.e., no shrinking or stretching). We repeatedly wash each sheet and measure them for shrinkage and appearance after laundering.

✔️ Wrinkle resistance: After washing, we take each sheet right out of the dryer to our specialized lighting room and visually assess it for creases based on visual industry standards.

✔️ Pilling resistance: To mimic tossing, turning, wear and tear, we use our abrasion machine (called a Martindale, pictured here) to rub swatches together, then visibly score signs of pilling according to textile industry standards.

✔️ Other technical factors: We also check how well the sheets fit onto a sample mattress and consider any claims, from cooling features to organic labeling.

✔️ Consumer testing : Our panel of testers rate each fabric in a blind comparison. Testing occurs after we wash the sheets to remove any leftover finishes from production. How to shop for cotton sheets

It may surprise you just how many types of cotton sheets there are to choose from. Here's what to keep in mind as you shop:

✔️ First, consider the c otton fibers:

• Long-staple cotton is considered a premium fiber because its longer strands mean there are no short fibers to stick out or break off, making the fabric smoother and more durable. Egyptian and pima cotton are both types of extra-long-staple (ELS) cotton, and Supima cotton is a brand name of pima cotton grown in the U.S . Just keep in mind: Egyptian cotton claims are hard to prove, and there have been instances of brands mislabeling their sheets when they don't actually contain this luxury fiber.
• Organic cotton is grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. But don't confuse organic cotton fibers with organic cotton sheets : A fully organic product will follow strict standards throughout the supply chain, not just the growing of the cotton. Check to make sure it's certified by a trusted source, such as the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

✔️ Next, consider c otton sheet fabrics:

• Percale is a basic weave that feels light and breathable. It's ideal for anyone who sleeps hot or prefers a crisp feel.
• Sateen is a satin-like weave that feels silky smooth. Our testers tend to prefer this feel because sateen sheets are softer than percale sheets , but they aren't as breathable.
• Flannel is a thick, brushed fabric that feels warm and cozy.
• Jersey is a knit fabric that feels like a T-shirt. It's stretchier and often very soft, but it's not as durable and pills more easily.

✔️ Also look into c otton manufacturing techniques:

• Combed cotton undergoes a process that removes shorter cotton fibers, leaving behind the longer ones that feel smoother and are less likely to break.
• Brushed cotton has a surface that's brushed to give it a fuzzy finish similar to flannel. This feels softer and helps trap air inside to make it cozier.
• Wrinkle-resistant cotton has added finishes to make wrinkle-prone cotton look smoother. Although this process often uses chemicals, you can check for an OEKO-TEX certification on the brand's website or the sheet set's physical packaging to make sure there are no unsafe levels of known harmful chemicals in the finished fabric.

Besides the type of cotton and its fabric construction, here's what to consider as you pick out your sheet set:

✔️ Thread count: This tells you the number of threads per square inch of fabric, and it matters only when the sheets are 100% cotton. Top performers in our tests are typically in the 300 to 500 range, but thread count isn't super important , and it's better to focus on the fabric specifications listed above.

✔️ Price: Cotton sheets are more expensive than ones that use synthetics, like polyester and cotton-poly blends, but you don't need to spend a fortune. Most of our top-performing cotton sheets are in the $100 to $200 range for a Queen-size sheet set.

✔️ Care instructions: There's usually no special care required because cotton is machine washable, but some sets call for gentle cycles or cold-water washing. Warm water is best for cleaning cotton sheets, especially if you're a hot sleeper or don't wash your sheets on a regular basis .

They didn’t shrink at all, and they fit on our mattress perfectly, staying in place amidst tossing and turning. During our durability tests, the sheets did not show any signs of pilling or thinning.

After six months of regular use, we were just as fanatic about these luxe sheets. They felt light as a feather yet still very sturdy—even after more washes–and retained their shape well over time.

In our tests, we were impressed with their smooth feel, which is expected from a sateen weave—but these sheets are not as heavy compared to other sets we tested. After lying down under them, we found that these cotton sheets were quite breathable and didn’t get too hot or cold. 

These sheets did shrink a little in the wash, but there were no noticeable threads or flaws that occurred. They seemed to get even softer and cozier after six months of use, though we also found they were a bit more wrinkly, too. While the fitted sheet initially fit pretty loose on our mattress, the strong, tight elastic kept it firmly in place, so it didn’t budge during our tests.

During our stain tests, these sheets cleaned up nicely after spilling foundation and coffee on them. However, the oil stain remained dark and visible, which is something to keep in mind if you use body or face oil as part of your nightly skincare routine. Otherwise, these silky sheets are a well-made and lustrous addition to any bed. While these sheets are breathable, they’re not the airy, moisture-wicking sheets that a hot sleeper would seek out. We were amazed by how airy these sheets were throughout our testing. Crafted from 100% long-staple organic cotton sateen, the lightweight material had almost a jersey-like finish. They felt less formal and structured than other cotton sateen sheets we’ve tried and were even more comfortable—plus they kept getting softer with every wash.  

Upon arrival, we did find a few loose threads on the flat sheet, and the seams on the pillowcase weren’t trimmed either. Aside from that, there were no significant imperfections. We didn’t notice any wear, fading, or staining post-wash and makeup stains came out effortlessly. The sheets maintained their high quality, even after three months of consistent use. Overall, we’d say these sheets are lightweight, breathable, and durable.

There’s a lot to love about The Citizenry’s Organic Resort Cotton Sheet Set. In our tests, these cotton sheets impressed us with their overall quality, in terms of softness, washability, durability, and more. They’re made with long-staple organic Turkish cotton, and the construction of these exquisitely soft and silky sheets matches the excellence of their materials. No imperfections were noticed at any point during our testing process, and the sheets have reinforced edges and understitched hems that give them a premium look. 

This sheet set is more akin to a sateen weave than percale, as it feels airy and smooth. The matching pillowcases have envelope closures, which create a neater look and prevent pillows from escaping their covers. Additionally, these sheets performed very well in our stain tests; after three washes, there wasn’t any trace of coffee, foundation, or oil. After six months of use, we noticed no visible shrinkage or color fading. In fact, these cozy sheets somehow became even softer over time.

While these cotton sheets are made with top-notch materials and craftsmanship, the sizing was a little off in our testing. The fitted sheet was too big for our mattress, so we had to tuck it under a bit to make it taut. If you decide to spring for these sheets, you should measure your bed just to be on the safe side.

We’ve tested more than 150 sheet sets, many of which are cotton, both in our testing lab and at home with real-world testers. We started by inspecting each sheet set right out of the packaging, taking note of any loose threads, discoloration, or other imperfections. Each set was then laundered the same way: washed using gentle detergent on a cold, permanent press cycle and dried with medium heat.

Next, we stained a small area of each sheet and one pillowcase with a bit of coffee, oil, and foundation and let the stains set for an hour. The sheets were pre-treated with a stain remover and then laundered again (two more washes and one more dry cycle).

To evaluate the quality of the sheets post-wash, we inspected the texture of each set again. We compared the stained area on the sheet (washed) to the stained area on the pillowcase (unwashed) to see how well the stains came out of the fabric. Since it’s normal for sheets to shrink post-wash, we also measured the length of a pre-drawn line and recorded the measurements.

Our next test focused on the breathability and moisture-wicking capabilities of the cotton sheets. We placed a corner of each flat sheet in an embroidery hoop to hold the fabric taut, and we used a dropper to place one drop of water onto the middle of the fabric. Over the next 10 seconds, we analyzed the drop of water by noting how much it expands and moves, making sure to measure the width of the drop.

To see if the fabric's color would transfer onto other surfaces or materials, we rubbed a white fabric square back and forth against the cotton sheets. After 20 swipes, we inspected the white fabric square for any color transfer and noted our findings. Then, we repeated this test with a wet fabric square to see if the results changed at all. 

We also tested the fit of the cotton sheets by making a bed with them. We took note of how easy it was to place the fitted and flat sheets on the bed and put the pillowcase on a pillow. To see how the sheets stand up to restless sleepers, we got into bed under the flat sheet and tossed and turned, making sure to note if the sheets came undone. 

Finally, for our durability tests, we took a sanding block and rubbed it against the flat sheet 25 times. Any fabric threads of fibers that came off the sheets were rolled up into a ball, which was measured for width. To gather long-term insights, we tested the sheets in the real-world conditions, evaluating them after three months and six months of use.

How to Shop for Cotton Sheets Like a Pro 

Cotton type.

There are a lot of different cotton types used to make sheets, and it can be hard to know which one is best for your bed. Here’s a rundown of the different varieties you may encounter in your sheet search: 

Extra-Long-Staple Cotton: Extra-long-staple cotton refers to the length of each cotton fiber. The longer the fiber, the softer and more durable your sheets will be. Cotton types that are regarded as top-tier, like Egyptian and Pima, are both long-staple varieties. 

Pima Cotton : Pima cotton is grown in different parts of the world, including Peru, Australia, and the United States. It has an outrageously silky touch and is regarded as one of the finest types of cotton in the world. Its extra-long fibers also make it smooth and resistant to tears. 

Supima: Supima cotton is the brand name for American-grown pima cotton and is strictly regulated by Supima to ensure the highest possible standard. Consequently, Supima cotton is known for having the most consistent fiber quality. Additionally, the cotton fibers are a bit longer than regular Pima cotton, which creates a smoother and more luxurious fabric. 

Egyptian: Egyptian cotton is the same variety as Pima cotton, just grown in Egypt. It is also ridiculously smooth and resistant to wear and tear thanks to its long fabric fibers, but know that some manufacturers may claim their cotton is Egyptian when it’s actually sourced from India or China, so make sure the cotton is certified before purchasing.

The weave is potentially even more important to consider because it impacts the look, feel, and sleeping experience of your cotton sheets. The most common types of cotton weaves are sateen, percale, and flannel. 

Sateen sheets are similar to satin: Lightweight and airy, they have a subtle sheen to them and are resistant to wrinkling. Thornburg suggests sateen sheets for people who run “medium to cool” while sleeping and notes they have a “soft, drapey” finish.

Percale sheets have a crisp and cool touch (we were big fans of Parachute's set in our testing). If you prefer hotel-like sheets, chances are you’ll be a fan of percale. It has a matte finish and stays cool, making these sheets great for hot sleepers. But because it uses more cotton fibers, it creates a denser fabric that wrinkles more easily. 

Lastly, if you sleep cold or live in a cooler climate, flannel sheets would be a good fit for you. They use a plain weave, which means a basic one over, one under pattern, but the fibers are brushed to create that classic fuzzy look. Flannel sheets are super soft and cozy to curl up with, especially on a chilly day. 

Thread Count

Thread count refers to the total number of yarns per square inch of fabric. While a higher thread count is often associated with better sheets, that isn’t always the case. Traditionally, a high thread count indicated that a sheet was made with finer yarns, which are smoother than coarse threads. Nowadays, thread counts are often inflated . “Sometimes sheeting will be woven with an ‘unbalanced weave’ in order to ‘up’ the thread count,” says Thornburg. “This means there are more threads going in one direction than the other. Unbalanced weaves tend to rip easier and in the end, create a lesser quality sheet.”

When looking at thread count, Thornburg says that it “needs to match the quality of the cotton and the type of weave.” For instance, if you’re looking at sateen sheets, you may prefer a lower thread count to a higher one so your sheets are soft and drapey, not stiff.

Certifications

There are a few certifications to keep an eye out for when shopping for cotton sheets. The first one would be the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which is one of the strictest certifications around. To be GOTS-certified, sheet manufacturers have to be thoroughly vetted to ensure that all stages of their supply chain are ethical and eco-conscious and that no harsh chemicals or pesticides are used at any stage of the production process. A GOTS certification means your sheets are 100% organic and are free from substances that can cause irritation or off-gassing smells. 

However, just because it’s organic doesn’t mean it’s necessarily higher quality. “Organic cotton doesn’t make it a better cotton, it just means it was grown without pesticides,” says Young. “It's not softer aesthetically in terms of hand or look. You can feel better about having it touch your body knowing it was not treated.”

Another popular certification is the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 , which ensures that the finished sheets you’re purchasing have been vetted to be free from over 100 chemicals known to be harmful to humans and the environment. However, Oeko-Tex’s standards aren’t as stringent as GOTS’s, and the entire supply chain doesn’t get vetted to ensure ethical practices. The Oeko-Tex Standard 100 is “a certification that tests the final product to ensure certain chemicals can not be found on it,” says Thornburg. “It is not a sustainability standard—it does not guarantee the cotton was grown without harmful chemicals or that they were not used elsewhere in the supply chain.”

You may also notice that some sheet sets come with a Fair Trade certification , which indicates they live up to Fair Trade USA’s standards in terms of working conditions and labor practices. While a Fair Trade certification doesn’t vet the materials that go into the sheets themselves, it does ensure that they come from a supply chain that pays workers a living wage, offers benefits, and ensures a safe working environment.

“Cotton is an ideal fiber for sleep,” Thornburg says. It makes for great sheets since it’s breathable and “can be woven into a variety of different weaves for different sleep styles,” according to Thornburg. While comfortable, cotton sheets can wrinkle easily, and they can grow mold if neglected. Additionally, Thornburg adds that “poorly constructed weaves might rip easily,” so not all cotton sheets have the same durability.

What type of cotton bedding is the softest?

“There’s a variety of cotton types that can be very soft,” Thornburg explains, “but extra-long- or long-staple cottons are known to be exceptionally smooth.” Popular cotton varieties that make for smooth sheets are long-staple Egyptian, Supima, and Pima cotton because the length of their yarns creates a smoother fabric.
