RIDE DESCRIPTION

The pearl of the Caribbean and Colombia’s most celebrated colonial-era town, Cartagena is as beautiful as you’ve always been led to believe. We don’t even care how busy it gets – there’s never a wrong time of year to spend a couple of days meandering the historic center, meeting its colorful locals, and feasting on its delicious pargo frito, a dish of fried fish served with coconut rice is reason alone to visit. Known as Colombia's party central, Cartagena is all about languid days spent lying on postcard-worthy beaches, and nights spent dancing and drinking with new local friends.

Cartagena is right at the top of many South America motorcycle travelers must-visit lists and we’ve got four itinerary suggestions, each one offering different highlights and varying degrees of riding difficulty. The straightest distance is about 640km (400mi) and although it’s possible to do it in a day - you'll definitely want to avoid that if you have the time to slow it down and enjoy the journey.

West - Mutata (National Route 62) – This is the straightest route west to the coast and is ideal if you’d love to reach the beaches in the shortest time possible and then meander up the coast, visiting all those charming seaside villages up to Cartagena. This is also the route you’d take to Panama, via Turbo, but you don’t need to opt for this only if planning a crossing of the Darién Gap – the islands of Capurganá and surrounds are fab to visit of their own accord.

North - Caucasia (National Route 25) - AKA the boring option that Google maps suggests. Fast and efficient if you’re short on time but, although the initial stretch out of Medellín takes you into high-altitude areas with mountain passes at 8500ft, it then drops down towards the coast, and this long stretch of straight can get a little boring.

East - Ruta del Sol (Highway 45) - Ruta del Sol is a motorway route that will take you almost to Santa Marta - a good option if you want to reach the far north-west and then slowly meander down the coast, to and past Cartagena, then Turbo and, finally, pick up the 62 back to Medellín. Great option if you’d like to do a loop trip.

IS COLOMBIA SAFE?

The answer is a resounding YES. Colombia is exactly the opposite of what Netflix Narcos series portrays. People have to realize that Pablo Escobar was killed three decades ago. We've led hundreds of tours around the country and have never had any problems with security.

Anthony Bourdain summed it up perfectly:

"If you want to find bad people in Colombia, you can surely find them, as you could in New York or Los Angeles. But nowhere have my crew and I been treated better or with more kindness and generosity. I'd bring my family on vacation there in a heartbeat. And hope to soon. As I said before: Colombians are proud. Let them show you what they are proud of."

Day 0 /  Arrival in Medellin

HotelIcon.png

Recommended Hotel:

Inntu hotel laureles .

Courtesy airport pickup: Upon arrival at the José María Córdova International Airport, a driver will be waiting for you at the arrivals area holding a sign with your name and wearing a fluorescent shirt for easy identification. They will then take you directly to the Inntu Hotel in the Laureles neighborhood.

The Inntu Hotel is located in the trendy Laureles neighborhood of Medellin, a vibrant area known for its tree-lined streets, outdoor cafes, and eclectic mix of restaurants and bars. The hotel itself is a contemporary, eco-friendly property that offers guests a comfortable and stylish stay, with amenities such as a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of the city, a fitness center, and a restaurant serving organic cuisine. The neighborhood is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a lively and authentic Medellin experience with plenty of opportunities for exploring, shopping, and dining. Its central location also makes it an ideal base for visitors to explore other areas of the city, with easy access to major attractions.

Day 1 / Medellín to Necoclí

ParkingIcon.png

Overnight Parking:

The trip to Necoclí takes a full day and is a natural stopping point for anyone wanting to visit the small towns on the coast before driving north to Cartagena. The ride to Necoclí is fairly uneventful. The trip takes you from the mountains of Medellín and drops you into the hot flat farmlands of Colombia. After endless hours of driving through banana plantations, you will finally arrive in Necoclí. If you wake up early the ride can be done in one day but if you want to break up the trip we recommend stopping in the small town of Mutata. The trip isn’t scenic or eventful but if you want to get to the beautiful coast it’s necessary to cross this area.

The town of Necoclí itself isn't that spectacular either but it makes the perfect place to park your bike for a day or two and take a boat to the remote beach town of Capurganá.

FEATURED IN

attachment_124182891.jpeg

Day 2 / Necoclí to Capurga ná

If you’re looking for a coastal beach town, flip flops in the sand, and rum in the tiki hut type of place, Capurganá is more authentic and laid back than Santa Marta or Cartagena with their endless t-shirt shops and street hustlers.  Accessible only by sea or plane, what Necoclí lacks in seaside charm, Capurganá more than makes up for!  Known for quiet bays backed by dense rainforest and abundant dive sites, Capurganá is the perfect place to spend a few days off the grid. Speaking of being off the grid, be sure to bring enough money for your stay as there is no ATM machine in the area.

One of the most popular activities is walking into Panama and visiting the town of La Miel. The trip offers fantastic views of the two villages as well as the emerald green rainforest and sapphire ocean. The hike passes through the town of Sapzurro and takes around two hours. The trip isn’t too difficult although if it recently rained we recommend wearing boots for the mud. Once you arrive you will find seafood restaurants, crystal clear water, and white sand beaches.

Day 3 (or 4 or 5) / Necoclí to Cartagena  - 378km / 235mi

Once you’ve hit the coast and are heading up to Cartagena, the options are literally endless. If you took a few days out in Capurganá, and are running out of time, you can knock out this stretch in one very long day.

Santa Cruz del Islote - Want to have a totally cool story to bring back home? Head over to the island of Santa Cruz del Islote. This remote place holds the title of being the most densely populated island on the planet with a population of 1200 people living on an island the size of two football fields. If you have a drone this island makes for an amazing photo to hang on your wall. To get here you can take a boat from the towns of Rincón del Mar, Tolú or from Cartagena.

Explore the Islands - Rincón del Mar is the perfect place to relax for a few days or to catch a speedboat to the San Bernardo Islands. Múrcura, in particular, hosts stunning bioluminescent plankton as well as small hotels that are basically tiny rock islands in the middle of the ocean. Isla Palma is another island in the area and is known for lots of fish and great snorkeling.

Coveñas - For a more up-scale motorcycle trip, hit Coveñas instead, the most popular beach resort town in the Gulf of Morrosquillo. Coveñas has all you need for a few days of relaxing beach-bumming: long stretches of beach, water sport options, shallow surf, and great ceviche. Don’t forget to leave time for a longboat tour of the Caimanera wetlands next door, a prized mangrove system home to many caimans, tropical birds, and other exotic wildlife.

Day 5 & 6 / Cartagena

Don’t Party Like The Secret Service - Colombia is known as the “Thailand of Latin America for its availability of prostitutes and if partying had a capital city, Cartagena would be it. Just ask the US Secret Service!  Back in 2012, about 17 secret service agents and 5 members of the US special forces were sent to Cartagena as part of President Obama's advanced security detail. After checking in at the famous Hotel Caribe, they spent the week drinking, going to clubs where they picked up around 20 prostitutes. Everything would have gone ok except one of the Secret Service agents got into an argument with a prostitute over his “bill for services.” The girl said that she was owed $800USD but the agent said that it was only $47USD. The argument got really heated causing the police to be called and resulting in the biggest public relations disaster in the security team's history.  We definitely recommend staying away from a place called Pleyclub due to the large amounts of prostitutes, and alcohol found there.

Cartagena Rooftop Pools - While you’re not busy avoiding partying and prostitutes at night are lots of things to do during the day such as going to luxury hotels and purchasing day passes to hangout at their rooftop bars and pools.

Bioluminescent Plankton Tour - When in Cartagena, you’ll have the chance to check out one of nature’s most intriguing phenomena. Take a boat tour to Puerto Naito Baru to swim among bioluminescent plankton. Pick a moonless, starry evening and enjoy an amazing experience, swimming in complete darkness with only the glow of the blue light emitted being from the plankton.

Totumo Mud Volcano - Another cool thing to do is going for a swim in the naturally heated Totumo mud volcano which is about 45 minutes outside of Cartagena.

Day 7 /  Cartagena to Santa Marta & Tayrona National Park

From here, you can hook up your itinerary with a visit to spectacular Tayrona.

If you’re after a truly spectacular place to take a dip in the Caribbean, then you can (almost) skip the whole above-mentioned lot and head straight up to Tayrona from Medellín instead. This protected reserve encompasses the wildest and least developed stretch of Colombia’s northern coast – an incredible coastal jungle that literally crashes into the sea in spectacular form – we’re talking dreamy beaches framed by rows of palm trees, quiet coves, unspoiled beaches, and the kind of coastal landscape that’s made every guide-book cover the world over.

Trek La Ciudad Perdida – The Lost City Trek

Ready to play Indiana Jones? Believed to be almost 700 years older than Machu Picchu, the real Lost City of the Andes is one of Colombia’s most spectacular rising stars and we bet the trek to get there will soon-enough outrank even the famed Inca Trail in Peru. Nestled in the northern wilds of the Santa Marta Mountains, the Lost City is an amazing trip. A multi-day trek means putting up with heat, bugs, and rain - yet the rewards are out of this world. Among an ecosystem that’s pristine and unspoiled, you’ll be ankle-deep in rivers and taking refreshing plunges in waterfalls not many even know exist, you’ll learn all about the tropical flora and will meet indigenous tribes still living here, unperturbed by the encroaching modernity, and always willing to lend a hand and a smile. This is not an easy challenge, but nothing that’s unforgettable ever is.

Optional Route - Tayrona to Cabo de la Vela - 428km / 266mi

If you have the luxury of more time and don’t need to loop back to Medellín just yet, continue north to the cape and the northeasternmost point in all of Colombia. A windsurfing and kitesurfing mecca, this windy but jaw-dropping region of Colombia is remote and hard to reach but absolutely spellbinding. We’re talking extremely hot and dry desert trails, overlooking sapphire seas, and very few towns to get in your way.

Day 8 /  Cartagena to Santa Cruz to Mompox - 328km / 200mi

Mompox is known as the anti-Cartagena due to the fact that very few travelers visit the area. Mompox is a place of unparalleled architectural beauty and seemingly frozen in time. Founded in 1540, the town was once a center of wealth and trade and rivaled Cartagena in importance as a port. Once the giant Magdelena river changed its course and riverboats were diverted elsewhere, the town lost its importance as a trade hub. Named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995, Mompox is said to be the closest you can get to experiencing life in a colonial-era port town. Boat rides can take you into the wetlands of the Mompox Depression which spread out to the horizon, giving a home to giant iguanas and tropical birds. Mompox is a natural stopping point while making your way from the Caribbean coast of Cartagena back into the mountain ranges of central Colombia. The road from Cartagena to Mompox is paved but the ride can be long and hot.  Lasting around 7 hours the road cuts straight through arid terrain composed of low lying scrub brush and sparse trees.

Day 9 /  Mompox to Bucaramanga  - 350km / 217mi

Bucaramanga is the capital of the Santander Department, a huge sprawling city set on the foothills of the magnificent Eastern Andes Mountains. The historic center is amazing, with whitewashed chapels and the towering Sagrada Familia Cathedral. There’s a fun water park (Acualago) and wonderful botanical gardens if you have time to explore after your long ride day. The main reason to visit Bucaramanga is because it’s a natural stopping point en route to San Gil, Baricharra, Chicamocha Canyon, and the general area of exploring the department of Santander.

Day 10 /  Bucaramanga to San Gil & Barichara  - 98km / 61mi

A shorter ride day today, southbound, will see you at San Gil and Baricharra, considered Colombia’s capitals of adventure sports. You can literally spend a week up here whitewater rafting, paragliding, horseback riding, hiking, caving, rappelling, and more. As usual, getting there is half the fun and this route is no different, taking you through the famous Chicamocha Canyon.

Larger Than The Grand Canyon - Have you ever wished that you can ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon?  Larger than the Grand Canyon, Chicamocha Canyon is covered with roads and switchbacks which make it possible to ride your motorcycle to the bottom, cross the river then ride back up the other side. Chicamocha Canyon drops down 2,000m (6,560ft) at its deepest point. The terrain is arid semi-desert and speckled with cactus so be sure to bring extra water and wear your sunscreen. Riding through endless switchback curves the journey ends at the well preserved colonial town of Barichara or the adventure sports town of San Gil.

San Gil vs. Barichara - San Gil is where all the river-based action plays out: this is a much bigger working town that offers a ton of exciting excursions (like the whitewater rafting, bungee jumping kayaking, paragliding, etc) and a much livelier evening scene. Baricharra, on the other hand, is a more charming but smaller and quieter village but this is the best base for amazing hikes. Barricharra is an enchanting town, one that’s often used as a movie set for Colombian telenovelas.

Our pick would be to head to Baricharra early in the day, park up, look around, and be in San Gil by the afternoon, to plan whatever crazy adrenaline-pumping sport you like best for the next day. If you’re an extreme-sport junky, this is the kind of area that’s likely to kidnap you for an entire week! (Although most people just spend a couple of days)

Optional route - El Cocuy National Park - 234km / 145mi

Absolutely mindblowing! One of the best and least-explored wilderness areas of Colombia, El Cocuy National Park is all about sapphire-hued lakes, snow-drenched high peaks, and spectacular ancient glaciers which are fast disappearing. Over the last five decades, more than half of Colombia’s glaciers have melted so if there’s ever been a time to visit this region on two wheels, now is it. You can ride into the park, all the way to the start of the hiking trail to Ritacuba, by far the most accessible glacier in this region. The town of El Cocuy is the best base to explore the park but the entrance is still an hour’s ride away – spend the night here, ride up in the morning and spend a full day hiking the somewhat limited but still sensational trails.

Day 11 /  San Gil to Barbosa  - 193km / 120mi

Quebrada Las Gachas, Santander - Quebrada Las Gachas is a series of natural "jacuzzi-like"  pools along a shallow river bed. Covered in colorful algae the river has been called Santander’s Cano Cristales. There is a 10 to 15-minute walk to get there, but it's worth the effort and the views are gorgeous.

Optional Trip: Windows of Tisquizoque - This hidden-secret is straight out of Jurassic Park. We love visiting here on our tours and although we’d love it to remain secret, we’d be amiss if we didn’t include it here. Tisiquizoque is a spectacular three-tiered waterfall that emerges from a cave set high up on the side of a mountain (the window) and cascades down 300 jaw-dropping meters of freefall. Best part? You can actually hike up into the mountain where the fall originates and follow the path of the river until the moment it plummets. There is also another trail that takes you to the bottom of the waterfall which is equally cool but without the huge panoramic view.

Day 12 /  Barbosa to Medellín  - 367km / 228mi

Either one full day of riding or 2 will see you back home taking you through the towns of Landázuri, Cimitarra, and Puerto Berrio before arriving in Medellín.

World Tour // South America: Cartagena - Punta Arenas

High altitude icon

More of everything: Nature, culture, adventure and curves, curves, curves!

South America from top to bottom - on a motorcycle all the way to the end of the world! We receive our bikes in Cartagena, handle some paperwork and then start our incredible tour. The Colombian countryside, cities and people inspire us with their beauty, openness and friendliness. And the road below us has a name: Panamericana! In the next few weeks we will ride nearly 4,000 kms of the 26,000 kilometer long north-south link. But first we make our way through the jungle of Ecuador and cross the country’s namesake: the equator. We move south through Peru, between the Pacific Coast and the Andes; and for the next three weeks one highlight follows another on a daily basis. It starts with the best ceviche of South America in Lima. Past the dunes of Ica, we reach Nazca, where the mysterious geoglyphical lines of the same name are waiting to be admired. We continue on one of the best motorcycle routes in the world across the Andes to Machu Picchu. The following day we arrive at the old Inca capital of Cuzco; and then to Los Uros, the floating islands in Lake Titicaca. Here we reach Bolivia, the Altiplano Plateau and La Paz, the highest place of government in the world. In this fascinating country we are thrilled by the incredible Ruta de la Muerte; a MUST for every motorcyclist in good weather. And we ride our motorcycles on Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt lake in the world. In the Atacama Desert we head across the Andes to Argentina. Here we roam the southern Gran Chaco and via the spectacular Los Caracoles we reach the vibrant capital of Chile, Santiago. After enjoying a well earned rest, we point our bikes towards the South, scratch the Pacific coast near Conceptión and find our way to the magnificent Carretera Austral. Endless twisties take us into the Chilean rainforest and back into the Andes, which will cross multiple times over the next few weeks. Here in Patagonia spectacular landscapes and pristine nature form our daily backdrop. This sparsely populated area - less than one inhabitant per square kilometer - fascinates us and leaves a lasting impression; with fabulous natural spectacles such as the Perito Moreno Glacier and Torres del Paine, one of the most beautiful national parks on the planet. From here it is only a few days ride to the end of the world: in Ushuaia there is literally no way to go any further! Faced with the magnificence of our earth, we take a deep breath and turn north towards Punta Arenas; the final destination of this remarkable motorcycle tour.

Six Days - Cartagena/Mompox

Sunshine, beach and sierra nevada - our "best of" tour.

IMG_1118

Description:

Day 1: juan de acosta.

Our way leads us along the caribbean coast, passing Cienaga where fresh fish is offered directly in the streets. You will see the ocean to your right and the wild mangroves to your left. After passing Barranquilla we leave the main road and ride through the countryside until we reach the small village Juan de Acosta where we stay in "El Cielo". Cielo means heaven and this is exactly what it feels like when we relax on the amazing terrace while the owner John prepares his spectacular local food only for us.

Day 2: Cartagena

Several dusty dirt roads lead us to a funny attraction of the Colombian coast: the Totumo, a small volcano. He doesn`t have lava inside but a sort of fango which the people say has healing forces. You might have a little bath and see if this is true. After that we go to the famous town of Cartagena, where we will arrive early enough to go and admire the beautiful colonial centre and enjoy the spectacular sunset from the wall of the ancient city.

Day 3: Cartagena - Isla Barú

Today we leave our bikes and get into one the the boats that are waiting in the little harbour of the old town. We are going to visit the famous "Islas del Rosario", an archipel of 28 small island surrounded by cristal clear water and corals. Get enchanted by the beauty of the place and go swimming, snorkeling or diving before we get to the legendary beach of Playa Blanca and may order a delicious piña colada under the palm trees. In the late afternoon the boat will take us back to Cartagena.

Day 4: Mompox

We follow our route and reach San Jacinto, famous for its handcraft. Colorful hammocks and the local "mochilas" can be bought at a fair price. On a winding tarmac road and a little offroad adventure, we arrive at the ferry and cross the Río Magdalena. The views of this landscape are simply impressive, it is rural Colombia and not at all touristic. At the end of the day we will arrive in Mompox where we will stay this night.

Day 5: Fundación

In the morning there is still some time to enjoy the very special atmosphere in Mompox. The old town has been restored during the past years and is now getting back its colonial charme. In contrast to Cartagena it is quiet and not at all turbulent. A nice place to relax and let the mind wander. A stroll along the riverside or a visit of the famous goldsmiths completes our stay before we get back on the dirtroads heading north. Tonight`s stay will be in the small town Fundación.

Day 6: Santa Marta

Leaving Fundación it is just a short ride on the highway, the so-called "Ruta del Sol" to the next adventure in the Sierra Nevada. A fantastic dirtroad is winding uphill along tomato-plantations, banana fields and coffee, coffee, coffee. The village of San Javier will mark the end of our road. Here we will have lunch together with the local coffee-farmers and get some insights in the "real" Colombian life.  You will be tempted to stay because it is just so beautiful up there, but in the early afternoon we start our way back to Santa Marta.

11 Best Cartagena Tours and Excursions to Consider Adding to Your Visit

To do tours or not to do tours in Cartagena, Colombia?

That’s a question I know I find myself asking a lot when visiting a new place.

On the one hand, I really like going at my own pace and feeling like I’m not just seeing the “tourist trap” sites.

On the other hand, I’ve done some awesome tours and excursions in Cartagena, not to mention elsewhere, that I got a lot out of.

In those cases, not only did I get to see places or things I might not have otherwise, but I also got great insight about the history or culture or just fun tidbits.

I can also often get a lot more into a day with organized tours and experiences than if I am just exploring on my own, a key advantage if you have limited time.

So, even if you’re more of a DIY type of traveler like me and want to do more than the average whistle stop tour that everyone else does, you can still get a lot out of doing some tours in Cartagena. And, well, yes, sometimes the typical tourists tours are popular for a reason and are even worth doing!

Photo of a ship in the water in front of the wall and churches in Cartagena, Colombia.

There are a lot of fun things to do in Cartagena , including a lot you can do on your own, but there is also a lot to be gained by doing some Cartagena excursions or guided experiences.

Even after living in Cartagena for 11 years, there were still times I learned something new on a Cartagena tour. There is a good reason after all that Cartagena is considered one of the best places to travel in South America !

I’ve got a whole list of more than 75 things to do in Cartagena I put together myself, a lot of them geared towards exploring on your own.

However, there are some things that are really only recommendable to do with an organized Cartagena excursion as well as some things that can be done on their own but really are better to do with a tour.

Many of them are especially great choices for those with limited time, those who like to learn a bit more, and those who want access to some places outside the city that are hard to do on your own.

So read on to learn my picks for the 11 best tours in Cartagena, Colombia you could consider adding on to your itinerary for your visit.

Best Tours in Cartagena, Colombia Quick Tips

I’ll be going into more detail about each of these tours and excursions in Cartagena below as well as go over some different options for doing them.

However, if you want a quick guide, here is a quick summary of the 11 Cartagena, Colombia tours I’ll be discussing in more detail below:

  • Tour to the Rosario Islands – This is an absolute must do Cartagena excursion. The top ways to do it are in a private boat rental , a catamaran boat tour , or a day trip to our favorite place in the islands .
  • Cartagena City Tour – Your standard city tour of Cartagena hits all the highlights, including the historic Castillo San Felipe and the Walled City.
  • Walking Tour of the Walled City – Take a walking tour of Cartagena’s historic center to learn even more details on the historic charm of the Walled City.
  • Walking Tour of Getsemaní – A great way to learn more about the history and see the cool street art of this historic district considered the cradle of Cartagenero culture is to go on a Getsemaní walking tour or Getsemaní graffiti tour .
  • Bike Tour of Cartagena – A unique way to do a city tour of Cartagena is a bike tour .
  • Sunset on the Bay – A great way to end the day with terrific views is a sunset cruise on a catamaran .
  • Tour the Bazurto Market – A unique look into the less touristy side of Cartagena is a tour to the bustling Bazurto Market . Best part is it includes food!
  • Do a Cooking Class – A neat way to learn more about the culture and culinary traditions of Cartagena is doing a cooking lesson . Plus, you get more food!
  • Take a Dip in a Mud Volcano – Cartagena’s oddest attraction is taking a dip in the mud volcano , which can be combined to include a bonus trip to a pink sea nearby.
  • Take a Day Trip to Palenque – Another chance to see the less touristy side of Colombia and learn about this unique historic community .
  • Take a Ride on the Hop on and Hop Off Bus – A surprisingly good value and way to see lots easily is buying a ticket for the Hop On Hop Off Cartagena .

In Depth Look at the Best Excursions in Cartagena, Colombia

Ok, let’s dive into each of these top tours in Cartagena de Indias in more detail.

For each, I’ll run down what to expect, why you should consider doing it as a guided experience, and some options for booking it. While I’ll try to mention it below where I link to them, please keep in mind that any of the tours offered by my partner BnB Colombia can be booked with a 20% discount with the code ExploreColombia20.

1. Rosario Islands – The One Cartagena Excursion You Can’t Miss

A visit to the Rosario Islands is an absolute must in Cartagena!

Yes, there are beaches in Cartagena proper, but they tend to be crowded and have lots of vendors. They also aren’t nearly as pretty as the islands! Playa Blanca is another popular choice, but in my opinion, it’s become way too crowded in recent years too.

So, it’s well worth spending the little bit extra to go out to the islands!

Since they are roughly an hour boat ride away, even if you are a DIYer and don’t like doing organized tours, you will need to do something organized to the islands, whether it be a day pass at a resort or a ticket for a tour or excursion.

Undoubtedly the coolest way to do a Cartagena island tour is via private boat . Having dance parties at party spot Cholón , stopping for snorkeling at the reef or site of a submerged plane, and checking out secluded beaches are the advantages of doing a private Cartagena boat tour.

While more affordable than you might think, it is of course, most cost effective if you are traveling with or can put together a group.

Photo of people on a private boat tour in Cartagena, Colombia.

If you can’t manage to swing the private boat, there are some other great options for Cartagena tours to the islands.

However, a word of warning: Be wary of cheap tours to the Cartagena islands sold by street vendors.

They are notorious for packing lots of people on tiny boats and having lots of upsells along the way like paying for chairs at the beach or paying extra to enter the oceanarium. Be sure you have clear what your tour will and will not include. Unless you really want to see the oceanarium, I’d avoid booking one that stops there.

My second choice for a Cartagena islands tour is to do the day trip on the Bonavida Catamaran . It’s a great boat and it includes lunch and snorkeling gear.

It’s without a doubt the best choice for a shared boat tour in Cartagena.

For those who want a proper beach, a day trip to IslaBela is also great. If you book at that link use the code ExploreColombia20 for a 20% discount! You can get the same discount on this day pass at a nicer place in the islands too.

By the way,if you have the time, say more than 4 nights total in Cartagena, I’d also encourage spending the night here or at one of the other resorts in the Rosario Islands .

Some other possible fun ways to do the islands are with a multi-island boat tour or on a shared party boat with open bar to Cholón . A day pass at Bora Bora beach club is another popular option for those looking for a bit more party vibes.

You can see even more options for Cartagena island excursions at my guide to the best Rosario Islands day trips and learn more about doing a day trip versus spending the night in my complete guide to the Rosario Islands .

Photo of a girl on a beach raising her hands during an excursion in Cartagena's Rosario Islands.

2. Cartagena City Tour

Well, what would a list of the best tours in Cartagena be without your classic Cartagena city tour!

This is a great way to see the highlights and main historic sites of the city and learn a lot about Cartagena’s history in a day or half day, depending on which of the tours of Cartagena, Colombia you pick.

I often recommend doing this your first day as it can be a great introduction to getting around and give you some valuable background and insight into the city’s culture and history.

There are, of course, different variations of this tour, so be sure to find out what is and is not included on any city tour of Cartagena you book.

Typically, they will include a visit to the Castillo San Felipe Fort , the convent atop the hill known as La Popa, and a walking portion of the Walled City.

Some may include stops like the San Pedro Claver Church , the Palacio de la Inquisición Cartagena history and Inquisition Museum, or the Cartagena Gold Museum , although I’d try to maximize your time with a guide and do those things on your own later. Oh, and if you like museums, the Cartagena Naval Museum is my favorite for learning more about the city’s history.

You can book a private city tour with our partners BnB Colombia Tours (be sure to use the discount code ExploreColombia20 for a 20% discount!) or book one via GetYourGuide or via Viator .

I like the idea of doing this private so you aren’t stuck with a big group which either always seem to move too slow or too fast. You can go at your own pace, get the photos you want, not wait for the photos you don’t want, and get to ask your guide all the questions you have!

There is also this shared tour that includes some street food tastings, about as good of an added bonus as there is, if you’re looking to save some pesos on a shared tour though.

Photo of the Castillo San Felipe fort with a Colombia flag flying over it and water in front seen during a Cartagena city tour.

3. Walking Tours of Cartagena’s Historic Areas

Perhaps you’d like to get the benefit of a guided tour in the historic city but explore the fort and other sites on your own?

If so, you might want to opt for a Cartagena walking tour of the historic districts rather than the full city tour. You can get 20% off a private walking tours in Cartagena with the code ExporeColombia20.

That tour not only includes a longer walking tour in Cartagena’s Walled City but also a tour of the adjacent district of Getsemaní, home of the colonial era artisan class and considered to be the birthplace of Cartagena’s culture (and the next place on this list, so you can’t beat the value!).

You can also book a shared walking tour via GetYourGuide or a private walking tour via Viator .

There are also some free walking tours of Cartagena. Just keep in mind though advertised as “free,” the expectation is that you do pay something at the end. I believe they do give you a suggested price. It’s an interesting business model, and we’ve enjoyed free walking tours before.

Photo of a near empty street during a walking tour of Cartagena's Walled City.

4. Tour of Getsemaní

As mentioned above, Getsemaní was the home of the colonial artisan class, many of them former slaves. In fact, the area remained a largely working class neighborhood into the opening years of the 21st century.

While there are still some long time resident holdouts, it’s now also home to lots of trendy bars, cafes, restaurants, hotels, and hostels. It’s still managed to keep a local vibe that isn’t quite as evident in the Walled City though.

By the way, do feel free to check out my guide to the Cartagena nightlife . You’ll see plenty of places from Getsemaní mentioned there!

It’s a great place to learn more about the history of the city, especially Cartagena’s independence , as the support of the artisan class for independence was crucial.

There is also some terrific graffiti and street art.

Not to mention, there are lots of neat photo ops with colorful umbrellas, flags, or both over several streets.

In short, whether you decide to explore here on a tour or on your own, it’s a can’t miss area of Cartagena.

Photo of a sign saying I heart Getsemaní over a narrow street with colorful umbrellas behind it seen during a Cartagena walking tour.

While Getsemaní can be explored on your own, there’s some good benefits of doing it with a tour. Much like the Walled City, you’ll get lots more valuable insight on the area’s and the city’s history, like for example the role played by mulatto leader Pedro Romero in independence.

A guide will also make sure to point out all the best street art and photo ops.

Once again, you can book a private walking tour of the Walled City and Getsemaní together or just a private walking tour of Getsemaní via our partners BnB Colombia and get 20% off with ExploreColombia20 discount code.

Another fun option would be this unique tour that focuses on the graffiti . There is also this neat tour that includes rum tastings . Drinking rum and talking history, what could be more fun! (Yes, I was a history major and I also like rum).

5. Bike Tour of Cartagena

If you’d like to do a guided experience to Cartagena’s historic highlights that isn’t quite your typical Cartagena walking tour, consider doing a bike tour!

Keep in mind Cartagena gets really hot, and you’ll definitely want to do this earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon.

It’s a neat way to do a Cartagena tour while also being active. In fat, this would be one of my top recommendations for excursions in Cartagena for families.

You can book a private bike tour with our partners at BnB Colombia (use the ExploreColombia20 discount code) or a shared one via GetYourGuide .

It is also possible to rent bikes hourly if you’d prefer to do this on your own or you would prefer to do one of the walking tours and just enjoy cruising.

Photo of a bike next to a yellow building with a white wooden window in Cartagena, Colombia.

6. Sunset on the Bay

Outside the more traditional Cartagena city tours and Cartagena walking tours noted above and doing a trip to the islands, this would be my top choice for a fun excursion in Cartagena you should absolutely consider doing.

There’s nothing quite like a beautiful sunset over the Caribbean.

While Cartagena has some great sunset spots , doing a sunset cruise on the bay is also a lot of fun. This is one of those things that we would do periodically and always enjoyed time and time again while living in Cartagena.

In addition to getting a great view of the sun setting over the ocean, you also get a unique perspective of the city, which is particularly pretty lit up once it gets dark on the return trip.

My top choice for a sunset cruise is on the Bona Vida Catamaran . Susana and I have done this and agree it’s the coolest boat ( see our review here ). It includes a couple drinks and snacks.

For those looking to do a bit more imbibing, there is also an open bar sunset cruise on the Sibarita . We’ve also done that one on the smaller Sibarita Express boat and enjoyed it a lot ( see our review here ). Sibarita also has a dinner cruise that looks like it would be a lot of fun.

Finally, the pirate boat also offers a sunset cruise with an open bar that looks like it would be good fun! I’m hoping to do it on our next return visit, and pretty much all I’ve heard about it has been positive.

Or for something unique and active, you could do a kayak tour at sunset .

Photo of a girl on a tour in Cartagena overlooking the sun setting behind big buildings across the water.

7. Tour to Cartagena’s Bazurto Market

If you’ve seen the Anthony Bourdain episode where he visits Cartagena, you got to see him head to the hectic Bazurto Market of Cartagena to get fresh ingredients with one of the chefs he visits. While there he marvels at the fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish and even has a fresh lunch from a small food stall.

After Bourdain’s visit, a place that does not look like your typical tourist attraction became one. Recreating his experience is what these tours attempt to do.

I’ll never forget walking by the market nearly every weekend to catch the bus back out to Barú where I worked as a volunteer teacher my first year in Colombia in 2011. It was definitely dodgy and even walking along the edge was a bit of an assault on your senses.

While Susana would occasionally go and buy fresh shrimp or lobster at the market, I mostly just avoided it during my time in Cartagena.

Honestly, I never would have expected it to become a tourist attraction, much less one of the top tours in Cartagena.

But, well, here we are.

Tours to the market are quite common now, and given its location away from the tourist areas and the fact that parts can still be a bit dodgy, I would not recommend going here except with a tour.

However, if you do go with a tour, you should feel safe doing so. It is a neat experience to see all the fresh fruits and vegetables, not to mention the fish mongers, and you can really get some very delicious fresh cooked meals.

Photo of people at stalls with fruits and vegetables and a muddy ground during a Cartagena, Colombia tour to the Bazurto Market.

I would give the caveat that even though it’s become a common tourist stop, it is still definitely not exactly your yuppie, granola mom’s idea of a farmers’ market. It’s the city market for the city, one that draws more of Cartagena’s underprivileged than its well off, and it is still very much an assault on the senses (especially if it’s rained!).

It’s a very neat way to see the less touristy side of the city and have a unique experience, but if you have a sensitive nose, have a weak stomach, or are a hygiene freak, it’s probably best avoided.

There are a few variations of the Cartagena Bazurto Market tour, but usually they include fruit tasting and a fresh lunch prepared with fish and/or shellfish caught that morning (I’m sure all can arrange a non seafood and vegetarian friendly option too).

You can book a private a tour to the market with out partners BnB, or for a better value book a half day experience that includes a walking tour of Getsemaní and the tour to the market (use discount code ExploreColombia20 for 20% off on either!). You can also book a tour to just the market on GetYourGuide .

8. Do a Cooking Class

If the Cartagena market tour interested you, you might also enjoy a cooking class.

I guess this isn’t a Cartagena tour or excursion per se, but it’s a neat and organized experience that is a bit different and allows for some hands on fun and learning.

Plus, the best part is you get to eat what you make!

Photo of a man with of a big plate of lobster and other seafood.

The best cooking class in Cartagena is at Cafe Lunático. You can book a spot via GetYourGuide or via Viator .

It includes preparation of several dishes, which vary according to the day of the week. It’s a fun way to combine a bit of learning about culture and tradition with one of everyone’s favorite activities on vacation, eating!

If you want to do a Cartagena food tour that doesn’t require you to do any work or head to the hectic market, you could also consider doing a street food tasting tour .

Or for dessert, consider a rum and chocolate tasting (use discount code ExploreColombia20).

And, be sure to check out my guide to the best restaurants to try in Cartagena too!

9. Tour to the Mud Volcano (and Pink Sea depending on season)

The Totumo Mud Volcano is probably Cartagena’s oddest attraction!

My experience is usually this is a love it or hate it kind of experience.

I remember going here during my first year in Cartagena. It was, well unique. Not something I’d repeat to be honest, but it was neat, and is certainly a good story.

Supposedly, the mud is great for your skin too.

Photo of people on one of the Cartagena, Colombia excursions to the mud volcano.

While it is possible to do this on your own by hiring a taxi or doing a combination of bus and motorcycle taxi, there are plenty of tours to the Cartagena mud volcano that are reasonably priced, so I’d recommend just doing it that way.

Depending on season, some tours here also include a visit to the Pink Sea of Galerazamba , which is itself a unique attraction. The only issue is the pink effect can be a bit unpredictable, so treat it more as an added bonus.

Our partners BnB Colombia offer both shared and private tours to the mud volcano as well as shared and private tours to the mud volcano and to the mangrove forests north of Cartagena (use that discount code ExploreColombia20 for a 20% discount on any of them).

You can also book this Cartagena tour via GetYourGuide .

Read more about this unique Cartagena attraction at my complete guide to the mud volcano .

10. Do an Excursion from Cartagena to Palenque

The town of San Basilio de Palenque, often just called Palenque, was a colony of runaway slaves.

They were so successful at repelling Spanish attempts to destroy them and at carrying out raids to free other slaves in Cartagena, that the Spanish crown actually negotiated a peace treaty that granted them legal recognition as a free town, the first town of runaway slaves to receive such recognition.

Photo of a statue of a slave breaking his chains in the town of Palenque.

This designation is why it is often called the first free black town in the Americas. While it was the first town of its kind to be recognized by a European colonial power, it was far from the first town of its kind.

In fact, there is a fair amount of myth about Palenque. I did a deep dive researching it for this site and you can read more about Palenque’s history here .

Still, it remains a culturally and historically significant site, and is pretty fascinating. While it used to be quite off the beaten path, it’s really grown as a tourist destination in recent years, and is a common excursion from Cartagena today. In fact, after the islands, I’d say it’s one of the very best day trips from Cartagena .

Located in the Montes de María region that was site to some of the worst violence of Colombia’s internal conflict, it’s a neat and largely community driven type of tourism that highlights Colombia’s under-recognized Afro-Colombian cultural traditions. It also offers a glimpse of the neglected state of much of rural Colombia.

I remember finding our visit here fascinating.

Many of the town’s colonial era residents kept alive their West African traditions, including traditional belief systems and language. In fact, the language that is still spoken by many of the town’s elders is the only known Spanish-African blended creole language, sort of akin to a Spanish patois.

I thought the most interesting thing was their unique justice system. For minor offenses, village elders decide the punishment rather than the normal legal system.

You can book a private tour with BnB Colombia (one final time, use that discount code ExploreColombia20!). You can also book a private tour via Viator .

You can read more about Palenque and why it’s worth visiting in my complete guide to San Basilio de Palenque .

11. See Lots at Your Own Pace on the Hop On Hop Off Bus

I know, I know, your first reaction here is probably similar to mine: this looks and sounds like the ultimate in tourist trap cheese.

However, the Cartagena Hop On Hop Off Bus is actually not a bad value, especially because the ticket is good for 2 days.

It has stops at a lot of Cartagena’s top attractions, including the Castillo San Felipe, and can be a much cheaper way to get to these sites than doing individual taxis.

If you want to see the main sites in Cartagena without necessarily doing a full guided experience with a guide but just get easy transportation there, it’s a decent option.

For that reason, I’m ending this list of the best Cartagena tours with it.

Photo of people walking on the streets of Cartagena, Colombia with the cathedral spire in the background.

Some More Honorable Mentions for Tours in Cartagena

Here are handful more Cartagena tours I considered for this list that may make for some more fun ways to explore the city:

  • Salsa Lessons – book this private lesson to get ready for hitting the dance floor.
  • Colombian National Aviary – the Cartagena Aviary is really well done, and you can book a private tour that includes transportation and a guided experience.
  • Playa Blanca – I still think you’re better off doing the Rosarios for a Cartagena islands tour or beach tour in Cartagena, but if you really want to do Playa Blanca or perhaps do both, this tour that includes lunch is a good option.
  • Bioluminescent plankton tour – Seeing the bioluminescent plankton doesn’t look quite as cool as in the pictures, at least in my experience, but it is neat.
  • Horseback riding on the beach – this would be especially fun for families or as a couple. Book with our partners or via GetYourGuide .
  • ATV Tour – This ATV tour is a pretty recent thing, but it’s got tons of great reviews and would be a bit more extreme way to explore the beach for a unique Cartagena excursion.
  • Paratriking Over the Beach – a unique and more extreme experience is this paratriking over the beach tour .
  • Nightlife and barhopping tour – this tour that includes drinks at several bars would be a fun way to meet some other travelers to party with.
  • Cruise excursion – this tour is designed for those arriving to Cartagena on cruise boats and is a good way to see the highlights similar to what you’d see on a Cartagena city tour if you are arriving by cruise for the day.

Which of these Cartagena tours will you do?

There you have it, my picks for the best tours in Cartagena, Colombia!

All of these are good ways to see different attractions in the city while learning more about its fascinating history and culture.

Whichever of these Cartagena tours you do, I hope this guide was useful and, most importantly, you enjoy them and your entire time in Cartagena!

Cheers and Happy Exploring!

We ride big chunks of the Pan American Highway in South America. This means beautifully paved roads will be mixed in with interesting historic and cultural destinations. Furthermore, expect wildlife, Unesco World Heritage sites, with incredible scenery as their backdrop. Delve into awesome experiences with both locals, team, and crew members.

There will be plenty to write home about. This is a demanding journey and riders need to be prepared for anything. The trip is intended only for adventure touring enthusiasts. Those of you who can demonstrate extensive riding experience. You have to have the physical condition as well as social qualities conducive to teamwork. Also, you must have the required flexibility for the success of the journey.

Experienced Riders

We will be going up to high altitudes around 5,000 meters where it can become quite cold. While most of the journey will be in humid and warm tropical conditions. The expedition will be fully supported with a 4×4 support truck, on-bike guides, and a very experienced crew from MotoDreamer. You can choose to ride either your own bike or rent a fully equipped dual sport bike from MotoDreamer in Colombia.

We stay in mid-to-top-range hotels. We always opt for the best option available – a clean, safe, and practical location. Temperatures can vary between 12 to 40°C (53.6 F to 104°F). Temperatures can drop for a short period going over the mountain passes. It is recommended to ride with ventilated riding gear. A pullover rain suite is a good idea to carry against mountain temperatures and possible short rain showers that can occur year-round.

cartagena motorcycle tour

Riding through colonial towns steeped in history, navigating river crossings and exploring the picturesque countryside linked by numerous bridges from a by-gone era, this tour will be sure to thrill even the most avid adventurers. Meet locals in colourful remote villages as we wind our way through lush paradise to reach the turquoise Caribbean coast.

We’re riding Royal Enfield Classics. While these may not seem like the obvious tool for the job, we’ve chosen these as the steeds for this trip for good reason. Sure, you’d be more comfortable on a BMW GS, and a KTM 690 would handle the rougher gravel tracks with ease, but the Enfield Classic adds a real sense of adventure and romance to the trip. It’s a fun, beautiful and surprisingly capable little bike that really adds to the overall experience of your Colombian Caribbean adventure!

This tour is sure to tick those boxes of wild exploration where one feels like a pioneer, conquering this exhilarating route. We love Colombia so let us show you all the reasons why!

Tour Itinerary Click to expand

Day 1: arrive in bogota - welcome to colombia click to expand.

Arriving in Bogota, you’ll be met at the airport in one of the highest altitude capital cities in the world. You will already feel the excitement of this city as you make your way to your hotel where you’ll receive a briefing from your tour leader. The mountains that frame this sprawling city in the distance are a glimpse of the adventure which lies ahead.

In the evening, we’ll head out to a vibrant restaurant where you’ll indulge in a welcome feast featuring a variety of traditional Colombian dishes.

  • Accommodation: 4* hotel with a pool.
  • Included Meals: Dinner.

Day 2: Bogota - Ubaté 90km Click to expand

Riding on unfamiliar bikes on unfamiliar roads in a busy city is never a great idea, so we have organised a minibus to collect us from our hotel and take us to our workshop on the outskirts of the city.

The rest of the support team will be waiting and the bikes will be lined up & ready to go! You’ll have time to make some personal adjustments to the bikes before we hit the road.

We take the backroads away from the city and soon you’ll experience a mix of both paved and unpaved roads, as the landscapes become more beautiful with every passing hour. As we near our destination of Ubate, we ride small lanes that roll through lush pine forests until we reach our accommodation – a traditional style farm set in a beautiful valley, surrounded by mountains and trees…now this feels like proper Colombia!

This farm is owned by our Colombian partners, who are all cowboys at heart! Even if horses aren’t your thing, we strongly recommend you let them take you on a night ride into the hills… It’s an incredible experience that you will not regret nor forget!

  • Accommodation: Farm style hacienda.
  • Included Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Day 3: Ubaté - Villa de Leyva 120km Click to expand

After a traditional Colombian breakfast, a fantastic day of riding awaits!

We start the day surrounded by subtropical greenery and tall forests that skirt the mountainside. We ride through the village of Pacho and pass the rugged landscapes of ‘La Candelaria Dessert’ before descending into Villa de Leyva. With its well preserved colonial-style houses and architecture it is clear why this town is one of Colombia’s best official Heritage towns.

Our hotel overlooks the square – the largest town square in Latina America – and is conveniently located next door to an excellent little bar – how’s that for planning? Sit outside and enjoy a cold beer or gin and tonic while listening to classic rock music and watching life go by.

  • Accommodation: Hotel overlooking the town square.

cartagena motorcycle tour

Day 4: Villa de Leyva - Barichara 230km Click to expand

A picturesque ride through the ever changing terrain and scenery, passing through rural plantations, we arrive in the quaint and colourful town of Barichara, situated along the historical trade route between Bogota and the Caribbean Sea.

Our journey into Barichara has taken us over a mixture of paved and well-maintained unpaved roads. We have crossed over hard river rock with low levels of water forming small rock pools, creating a perfect place to stop and enjoy a delicious local lunch experience next to the river, which has been prepared for us by a local resident.

Barichara is quite simply known as ‘The Most Beautiful town in Colombia’ with its bright colours it is every bit the quintessential Latin American town, full of history and bursting with character.

We’ll arrive early enough to freshen up before heading out to watch the sunset over the rooftops as the dimming light creates an array of exquisite colours across the town.

  • Accommodation: Hotel.

cartagena motorcycle tour

Day 5: Barichara Rest Day Click to expand

It’s quite fitting that in the indigenous Guane dialect, ‘Barichara’ literally translates to “Place of Rest”!

Take some time to explore the cobbled streets of Barichara on foot – or if you’re feeling a little more energetic why not try out some rafting or hike to the rustic town of Guane.

Even if you choose to spend the day with your boots up, you are bound to be impressed with the historical and beautiful town.

  • Accommodation: Hotel with a swimming pool.
  • Included Meals: Breakfast, dinner.

cartagena motorcycle tour

Day 6: Barichara - Girón 145km Click to expand

After our rest day, it’s an early start as we have a big day ahead of us.

The morning’s ride will be a mix of paved and unpaved roads, with the latter deteriorating into small farms tracks in places that roll over the hills. As the morning progresses, the massive canyon will come into view. And it is massive, with a maximum depth of 2,000m, covering 108,000 hectacres and 227km in length, it’s the second largest in the world. And we’re about to ride through it (we weren’t kidding when we said this was going to be a big day!).

Countless twists and turns take us down into the valley, allowing the Royal Enfields to truly prove their agility. These bikes are lovable machines, and riding them in landscapes as vast and beautiful as this is quite an experience.

cartagena motorcycle tour

Day 7: Girón - Aguachica 235km Click to expand

As we continue our journey north, the scenery continues to change – the lush landscapes of the Santander region merging into a more rugged terrain as we enter the valley of Magdalena Medio.

We follow an old abandoned railway line, which sets the stage for adventure from another era, as we navigate over plenty of tall bridges – some with sides, some without – revealing the rushing rivers beneath your tyres. It’s definitely unnvering in places, but certainly an experience unlikely to ever be forgotten! We also pass through the old train tunnels which have been cut through steep ravines. Very cool.

By this stage you are feeling like a pioneer as you have navigated all the way from the high altitude of over 2500 metres in Bogota down to about 150 metres in Aguachica. It is all about the beauty here, the sounds and the colours of the birds and the butterflies which you can see dancing around the tropical fruit trees that line the streets.

  • Accommodation: Hotel with a pool.

cartagena motorcycle tour

Day 8: Aguachica - Santa Cruz de Mompox 210km Click to expand

We descend to the flat lands and leave the Andes Mountain range behind us, riding small dirt tracks through villages and farmland. It’s a cruisy and relaxed ride that will lead us to the edge of the mighty Magdalena River – the largest and most famous river in Colombia.

We cross the river first on a rustic ferry, before a beautiful ride alongside the river and onto some singletrack trails. We then cross another section of the Magdalena, this time loading our Enfields onto small wooden longtails. Always a great experience!

We reach the town of Mompox, which could be described as a miniature version of Cartagena. It’s a beautiful little town, so we’ll stop here for a couple of nights to take it all in.

cartagena motorcycle tour

Day 9: Santa Cruz de Mompox Rest Day Click to expand

Take today at your own pace and choose from a range of activities… simply relax by the hotel pool, go horse riding around the grounds of a beautiful hacienda, discover the intricacies of the filigrana (a very delicate type of silver work) by taking part in a short workshop, or enjoy a beautiful canoe picnic on the Magdalena river.

This Unesco World Heritage Site is sure to impress you with its colonial architecture, vibrant restaurants and venues which are host to many cultural experiences.

cartagena motorcycle tour

Day 10: Santa Cruz de Mompox - Tolú 210km Click to expand

Refreshed and bushy tailed, we hop back on the bikes and boy oh boy have we got a corker of a day in store for you!

We pass through the town of Magangué which has a real “African” feel to it, with the colours and scenery of savannah-type vegetation stretching as far as your eyes can see.

Today we reach the Caribbean Sea in all it’s bluey green glory! We arrive at the beautiful natural reserve of Sanguaré, known for its white sandy beaches and clear waters. It’s simply stunning.

We arrive early enough to enjoy a dip in the Caribbean sea after we have checked into our hotel by the ocean!

cartagena motorcycle tour

Day 11: Tolú - Cartagena 160km Click to expand

The final day of riding leads us to Cartagena.

A final ride through an eclectic mix of neighbourhoods, landscapes and scenery will take us past lush palm trees and tropical vegetation to this magical fortified town and one of the most beautiful cities on the Caribbean coast. With its mixture of old and new, the vibrant colours of the Caribbean provide the backdrop to this magical city.

You’ve made it!! You have crossed the Andes mountains, ridden through rural farms, forests and stone deserts, crossed rivers on small boats, crossed many quirky bridges, passed through many tunnels and arrived at the Caribbean coast. An incredible adventure deserves an incredible farewell… So tonight, we’ll be doing just that!

  • Accommodation: Hotel with a rooftop pool.

Day 12: Departure - Transfer to the Airport Click to expand

We’ll be saying our goodbyes here as our team will now load the bikes and journey back to the workshop in Bogota… Bon voyage!

For those flying out today, we’ll arrange your transport to the airport. But if you can spare a bit more time, we would strongly recommend you hang around a bit longer! It’s such a beautiful place and whether you just want to relax on the beaches or continue exploring, Cartegena will not disappoint.

FAQs Click to expand

Are there atms en route click to expand.

Yes, there are ATMs in the larger towns, but not the villages.

Don’t forget to tell your bank you are heading to Colombia, as without this information they will most likely think some rogue hacker is dipping into your account and promptly block your card.

Can I get a local sim card? Click to expand

Yes, and we advise you do. They’re cheap to top up and easily obtainable at the airport or small shops in Bogota.

Can you cater for food allergies / vegetarians / vegans on this trip? Click to expand

This really should not be a problem in Colombia and we will make every effort possible to communicate your requirements to the places we visit. However, as we are not preparing the meals ourselves, we are unable to make cast iron guarantees. If you are going to go into a life-threatening spasm if you touch a stray peanut, then please let us know – we need to know that stuff, we really do.

Do I need a visa? Click to expand

Most nationalities can enter Colombia for 90 days without a visa. However, we always recommend you check the foreign office website for the most accurate and up to date information relating to visas and other entry requirements.

Follow this link for Colombian entry requirements. This link is to the UK foreign office website – if you are not a UK resident, please search for the equivalent info from your home country’s foreign office.

Visa costs, if applicable, are not included in the tour price.
