Jonathan Fenderson, associate professor of African and African American studies, will undertake formal methodological and theoretical training in the fields of ethnomusicology and sound studies for his current research project, “Project Noise: NYC Public Housing, Neoliberalism and the Ascent of Hip-Hop America.”

Environmental racism flourishes in the resource-rich lands of Colombia’s Pacific Coast, says PhD candidate and Graduate Student Fellow Kaché Claytor. It’s a recurring topic for the music group ChocQuibTown, which brings public attention to the plight of the region’s people.

Japan’s “five-foot giant” of international relations

As United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Japan’s diminutive diplomat Sadako Ogata (1927–2019) led the agency through the turbulent 1990s, managing complex refugee crises in Iraq, the Balkans, Africa’s Great Lakes region and Afghanistan. That’s only one chapter of Ogata’s life story, which intertwines with Japan’s 20th-century international relations history in illuminating ways, says Faculty Fellow and historian Lori Watt.

Effective June 10, 2024, staff new employee orientation (NEO) will be assigned in Workday, WashU’s HR and Finance system. The staff NEO enrollment transition is part of ongoing Workday Learning Pilot . You can find an overview of the pilot update as of June 2024 in the NEO Transition to Workday Learning document (PDF) .

WashU is “no-loan” for all

As part of our commitment to always put students first, Washington University is expanding its “no-loan” financial aid policy to include all admitted undergraduate students beginning in fall 2024. This means that need-based loans will be replaced with scholarships and university grants in all financial aid packages, ensuring that all admitted students can obtain a world-class WashU education without going in to debt. This policy is the latest step in a long, comprehensive strategy to expand access and financial aid at the university. Other components include the WashU Pledge and our need-blind admission policy.
