Cairns to Cape Tribulation Drive: The Essentials

As with all good road trips there are few things you need to know before you hit the road. How long the trip will take, where to hire a car, when to go and which direction offers the best views.

Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered below! If you have any questions that aren’t covered here let me know in the comments below or feel free to send me an email.

The best time to Visit Cape Tribulation

Far North Queensland is located on at the tip of the East Coast of Australia and has a very tropical climate. This means in the summer months, it is very hot, wet and humid …. think getting out of the shower and feeling as though you need another shower straight away.

Summer is Australia is between December and March, and most Aussies head south for this time to avoid the tropic climate. However, in the winter months (June/July/August) Tropical North Queensland is a very popular place as the weather is still warm and the sun is out most days but it is not as humid in the summer.

If you want to avoid the humid weather and the hoards of tourists that flock to Cairns and Cape Trib, I suggest planning a trip in May or September.

Hiring a car in Cairns

One of the best ways to see the Great Barrier Reef Drive is to self-drive and hire your own car. During peak season (May-September) cars are hot property and are hired well in advance. Whilst, you can hire a car on the day they tend to be quite expensive and you might not be able to hire you want.

As with most capital cities there are plenty of options when it comes to hiring a car there are plenty of options.

If you would like the option to compare prices among a different range of companies check out price comparison sites such as Kayak , Europcars and Rentalcars.com . Depending on are already staying in Cairns City Center or you are picking up a car from the airport you will be able to bring up hire options for both.

Keep in mind, the cheaper car hire options are usually a little further out of the city or from the airport so it is worth enquiring if they have a shuttle bus.

We decided to hire our car from Jucy as we were travelling on a budget and it is worth keeping in mind you get what you pay for. We were quite happy with our hire experience but we were required to clean the car before returning it and I suggest you to take a Bluetooth speaker to ensure you have access to music on your road trip.

Cairns to Cape Tribulation Drive Time

The drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation is relatively easy (until you cross the Daintree River) and is not overly long. Without stopping you will be able to travel from Cairns to Cape Trib in around 2 hours and 40 minutes.

However, like with most road trips the Cairns to Cape Tribulation road trip has many spots to stop along the way. It took us most of the day and we still didn’t see everything we wanted to see on the way and we needed to stop on the way back to make sure we had ticked all of our items off our Tropical North Queensland bucket list.

A day trip or Overnight?

If you are short on time you can easily do the drive in a day. If you limit your stops you can make it to Cape Tribulation and back in day. If you plan on staying in Cape Tribulation, you will comfortably be able to fit most things on this road trip itinerary in one full day assuming you leave from Cairns around 8am.

However, if you would like to take your time at each spot and see everything on the list below, I suggest staying along the away and taking two days to complete the trip.

As you go through the itinerary below you will find some of my top recommendations of places to stay.

Cairns to Cape Tribulation Itinerary

Finally, we have made it to the part you have all come here for, the Cairns to Cape Tribulation Drive Itinerary, or if you’d prefer the highlights of the Great Barrier Reef Drive. You are in for a treat with this drive and I don’t think any Australian Bucket list would complete without this drive.

Let’s jump into it

A path running through two rows of palm trees next to a beach

Palm Cove has a real beach town feel about it but it is actually a suburb of Cairns. There are plenty of things to do in Palm Cove and you could easily spend half a day here but I recommend stopping in for a walk along the beach and breakfast at Espresso & Co . If you get a table at the front you will have a beautiful view of the beach as you eat your breakfast.

If you are planning on swimming at Palm Cove, make sure you do so between the flags as there are nets in the water to keep you safe from Jelly Fish.

Palm Cove also has some amazing Boutique shopping, a gorgeous rainforest walk to Clifton Beach and some amazing restaurants.

If you would like to stay in Palm Cove I recommend the following:

The Reef House is a luxury boutique hotel that looks over the Coral Sea. It is the perfect place to unwind and treat yourself for a night or two. You can relax in the adult’s only pool, participate in yoga and aqua aerobics or join in a cocktail making class. The Reef House also has a day spa where you can really treat yourself. Each guest is invited into the Brigadier’s lounge to enjoy complimentary drinks and canapés.

Compare prices on Booking.com | Agoda

Paradise on the beach is a mid range hotel with sea view rooms. The room was equipped with a microwave, small fridge, crockery and some basic cooking utensils. However, to wash up after preparing food you need to use the sink in the bathroom.

The hotel has a beautiful pool and spa area which features an undercover BBQ area complete with all the utensils you will need to cook on the BBQ. If you are choosing to cook meals, I recommend meals that can be cooked on the BBQ as this is a much easier option than cooking in your room.

Ellis Beach

Not long after leaving Palm Cove you will come across Ellis Beach. The beach consists of 5km of golden sand and is absolutely stunning, it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Cairns region.

I highly recommend a stop at Ellis Beach, even if its only for 5 minutes to enjoy the views. If you happen to have left Cairns very early in the morning you might even be able to enjoy sunrise, it is truly something to admire.

If you would like to stay the night you can stay at Ellis Beachfront Bungalows, the bungalows are located 1 minute from the beach and include a kitchenette and plenty of space for you to relax. (Compare prices on Booking.com | Agoda )

Ellis beach also has an amazing bar/restaurant, patrolled beaches and stinger nets in the water during the dry season.

The Balancing Rocks

The Balancing Rocks are easy to miss but if you have the time, I suggest a quick pit stop to admire the piles of rocks that have been placed here by many travellers before you.

It is anybody’s guess as to how these rocks came to be here, who started or why it was started. There is no cultural or historical reasoning (that we know of) for the rocks but none-the-less it has made a pretty cool stop.

Jump out of the car and build your own Balancing pile or take some unique photos of other peoples rocks.

Wangetti Beach

Wangetti Beach is more of a local secret and a fairly remote beach. The beach runs four kilometers from Slip Cliff Point to Red Cliff Point. There are no facilities at the beach and the car parks are located at either end of the beach.

Pull off the highway and stop to take in the views of the almost straight coastline. If you have a little more time it is the perfect spot to stretch your legs and take a walk along the sand. The beach is stunning and practically untouched but has been naturally eroded which means you can enjoy the pebble stones that cover a section of the beach. For the best views of the beach stop by the lookout at the Northern end of the beach.

The Thala Resort Palm Tree Road

Whether you choose to stay at the Thala Beach Nature Reserve or not, you must make a stop here. I’m sure you’ve seen the stunning photographs on Instagram of the Palm Tree Road.

The Palm Trees are pretty spectacular as they are very symmetrical, whilst photos from the ground are lovely, if you have a drone you will want to get it out for some amazing shots above the trees.

There are big signs on the highway and the plantation is located just off the highway, so it is hard to miss.

If you have made it this far and you are looking for a place to stay to break up the drive, Thala Beach Nature Reserve is the perfect place. Who doesn’t love accommodation with a private beach?

Rex Lookout

A view over the ocean and rainforest at Rex Lookout, Far North Queensland

For one of the best views on the Great Barrier Reef Drive you must stop at Rex Lookout. There are plenty of signs that point to parking on both sides of the road, if you park on the opposite side of the road be careful crossing the highway.

Be prepared for one of those draw dropping moments, on a perfectly clear day the view is breathtaking. Looking out over the blue ocean and towards the rainforest. It truly is a moment to appreciate all that nature has to offer.

There is a large grassy area you can sit and enjoy the view and perhaps a picnic if you plan ahead.

We enjoyed the view so much that we stopped again our way back from Cape Tribulation to Cairns.

This spot is not a local secret so expect to find plenty of other people enjoying the views too.

Crocodile Lookout Point at The Mowbray River Footbridge

If you are looking for a reliable place to spot some crocs in the wild then the newly constructed Mowbray River Footbridge is one of your best bets along the Cairns to Cape Tribulation drive.

For your best chance to spot a crocodile resting on the banks of the river, try to time your visit with the low tide. If you’re really lucky, you might even seem them swimming under the bridge.

Stick to the foot bridge for your own safety and do not approach the crocodiles.

Port Douglas

St Mary's Chapel in Port Douglas

The gorgeous resort town of Port Douglas is the perfect place to stop for lunch (or even a few days) on your Cairns to Cape Tribulation Road Trip, there are plenty of cute places to shop and eat. Port Douglas is famous for it 4-mile beach, so there is plenty of beach to stroll along.

If you are passing through town on a Sunday you must head to the Port Douglas Markets for some local shopping, great coffee and amazing crepes.

For some where nice to stay without breaking the bank, check out the The Newport Resort. You will be located a 5 minute walk from the 4-mile beach and the Marina, as well as many of the shops.

Looking for something a little fancier? You can’t go past the Shantara Resort. The Adults Only retreat is 400 meters from the 4-mile beach and each boutique style room offers private balconies to spend an evening relaxing. Choose a room with pool access to make cooling off at the end of the day so much easier.

Mossman Gorge

cairns day trip cape tribulation

Your next stop on the Cairns to Cape Tribulation drive is Mossman Gorge. Mossman Gorge is locate just 20 minutes north of Port Douglas and at the end of the Captain Cook Highway.

Mossman Gorge is a fabulous place to experience the Daintree rainforest. You can park you car at the visitors centre and embark on the 45-minute rainforest circuit. Along the circuit you will find huge rainforest fig trees, birds and animals that are unique to the rainforest and you will be able to swim in the rainforest creeks. These creeks are crocodile free so you can can cool down without worrying about the crocodiles.

It is also the perfect place to learn about the indigenous culture in the area and of course, spend your entire afternoon swimming in the creeks and watering holes.

Daintree Village

The General Store in Daintree Village

To get a real taste of what rural Far North Queensland is like, take a short detour and visit the Daintree Village. The village is very small and only has a couple of cafes/restaurants, a general store and a camp ground. Despite the size of the village it is well worth a quick stop and a great place to grab something to eat.

The Daintree River Crossing

Next along the Cairns to Cape Tribulation drive is the Daintree River. The only way to access Cape Tribulation is to cross the river on the ferry. The ferry only takes about 5-minutes but the wait for the ferry can 30 – 60 minutes.

The Daintree River Ferry costs $23 for a one way ticket per car and can be paid when you arrive at the river crossing. You can also purchase a flexible return ticket for $39 and it can be used for any return trip.

The Cape Tribulation Ferry runs from 5am until midnight every day and departs roughly every hour depending on the season. For a more in-depth information check out the Cape Tribulation Ferry timetable here .

Mount Alexandra Lookout

Once you disembark the ferry the road will continue on for another 50 minutes (approximately) towards Cape Tribulation.

The road becomes quite steep and as you climb up the road you will find the Mount Alexandra Lookout. There is a big sign for the lookout and there is plenty of parking for your quick stop. The lookout provides great views over the Daintree river.

After stopping at Rex Lookout earlier on in the drive we were not as blown away by the Mount Alexandra Lookout but it is still beautiful and well worth a five minute stop.

Daintree Discovery Center

the board walk through the rainforest at the Daintree discovery centre

Cape Tribulation is quite remote and does not offer many of the traditional touristy things to do. But, if you want to do something a little touristy then I highly recommend the Daintree Discovery Center.

Once you enter the center you will find boardwalks that wind around the Daintree rainforest. You will be provided with an audio guide and the number along the boardwalk will guide you through the rainforest.

During your walk you will learn about the history of the rainforest, the animals and plants that live in the rainforest as well how the indigenous people used the forest for education, food, medication and protection. As well as the dinosaurs that used to roam the rainforest many moons ago.

Daintree Ice Cream Company

A cup with three scoops of ice cream surrounded by rainforest

The Daintree Ice Cream Company grow all of their own fruit and make 4 – 5 flavours daily depending on the fruit in season.

You can buy a cup with a single flavour such as mango, coconut, vanilla, soursop and milk chocolate. A cup with a single flavour costs $6. If you feel like being a little adventurous I recommend trying the Signature cup for $7.50.

Cape Tribulation

cairns day trip cape tribulation

Cape Tribulation beach, where one world heritage listed site meets another, or in other words, the Daintree rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef.

There is no better place to see the Daintree meet the Great Barrier Reef than Cape Tribulation Beach. As you walk through the rainforest and out onto the pristine beach, be prepared for some incredible beauty.

There are no words to describe the first time you step onto Cape Tribulation Beach. The grand Daintree rainforest stands as a border for the sand, where it has stood for 180 million years. The sand is white and the water is blue, it is almost as though you have entered the set for Castaway or Survivor.

Your foot prints will be the first on the beach and you will have this incredible moment to yourself.

The quiet and calmness of the moment will only be interrupted by the sounds of the trees rustling and the waves lapping the shores.

Enjoy a walk along this remote and deserted beach. Although the temptation to see the moment through your camera will be strong, make sure you take in the atmosphere.

The beach is easy to find and there is plenty of parking. In the carpark you will find a toilet which is very clean and flushes (many toilets in the area are drop toilets).

DO NOT SWIM AT CAPE TRIBULATION BEACH . Although the beach is beautiful and the sparkling water will be calling you in, please follow the signs and do not swim at the beach.

Cape Tribulation to Cairns

The drive from Cape Tribulation to Cairns is more or less the same drive and you are able to stop at the same spots as you did on the way to the Daintree Rainforest. However, we used some of the trip back to stop at a few of the stops we missed on the way up.

However, if you hit all of the stops on the way up you might want consider stopping at the Kuranda Skyrail for a trip in a gondola up into the trees of the rainforest to the rainforest village of Kuranda.

Cairns to Cape Tribulation Tours

If you are unsure about driving, or the river crossing makes your nervous or you would just prefer for someone else to do the driving for you so you can relax and enjoy the stunning views, there are plenty of tours you can do from Cairns to Cape Tribulation. Most of the tours offer pick up and drop off to city center hotels in Cairns.

Here are some of the best tours for days trips from Cairns to Cape Tribulation:

Final thoughts on the Great Barrier Reef Drive

The drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation is one of the most beautiful drives on the East Coast of Australia. The landscape differs drastically from the stunning blue ocean and white sandy beaches to the UNESCO World Heritage Daintree Rainforest.

It is a drive that must be on your Australian Bucket list at least once. So pack your bags for the beach, turn on the radio and prepare for the most amazing few days of your life.

Cairns to Cape Tribulation & The Daintree Rainforest: A Road Trip Itinerary

Driving from Cairns to Cape Tribulation, home to The Daintree, the world’s oldest rainforest, was one of the first adventures I had in Australia. I was living in Melbourne, and having spent 6 weeks in the city during the Australian winter months of July and August, I was keen for some sun and warmth.

So my friends and I headed to Cairns in Tropical Northern Queensland, with no set plans but an overwhelming need for heat and adventure at the end of August. Only when I got to Cairns did I find out more about the Daintree Rainforest and realised I needed to go!

We quickly formulated a plan to get a hire car and a map, and the next day, we headed north from Cairns to Cape Tribulation. In no time at all, we had left the city centre of Cairns and were cruising up the Captain Cook Highway. And what a road trip adventure we had.

Cape Tribulation is unique in that it is the only place in the world where two UNESCO World Heritage Sites meet. The slogan used by the local tourism board of ‘reef meets rainforest’ is perfect, as the beautiful Daintree Rainforest reaches the wild beaches of Cape Tribulation, where it is met by the Great Barrier Reef. It is quite something.

Drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation

So here’s my guide on the Cairns to Cape Tribulation road trip, which is must-do adventure, whether you’re travelling the East Coast of Australia , or enjoying a holiday in Cairns.

Cairns to Cape Tribulation: Essential information

Beautiful beaches in Tropical Northern Queensland

Best time to visit Cape Trib & the Daintree Rainforest

Ideally, I would recommend avoiding the months between January and March, which is the height of the Australian summer. This brings the hottest, wettest and most humid weather to Tropical Northern Queensland. It is also ‘stinger season’ during these months, which means the presence of box jellyfish in the waters which have painful (and sometimes fatal) stings.

The best time to go to Cairns and Cape Tribulation is between May and September when the area sees hot, sunny and dry days. This also means better visibility underwater, which is key if you’re planning to also visit the Great Barrier Reef.

Snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef

Should I do a one day trip road, or stay overnight?

This entirely depends on the time you have available and how much you want to spend on the experience.

It is perfectly do-able to do the the Cairns to Cape Tribulation road trip in one day, if you leave around 8am or 9am in the morning. You’ll definitely return after dark, if you choose to have dinner in the rainforest.

Alternatively, it is a special experience to sleep in the rainforest and there are plenty of small lodges, cabins and eco-stays to pick from. I would always recommending booking these beforehand, if possible. It wouldn’t be ideal to suddenly be stuck in the Daintree Rainforest as you realise nowhere has any availability!

I’ve popped several accommodation suggestions for the rainforest and Cape Tribulation later down in this post.

Driving from Cairns to Cape Tribulation

Can I take my camper van, or rent a car?

I do not recommend driving a camper van past Port Douglas. The rainforest roads are very winding, and narrow and would be difficult to navigate in a camper van.

Also, it’s worth noting that if you were to consider driving further north from Cape Tribulation towards Cooktown and the Cape York Village, this requires a 4WD. The tracks here are very challenging.

Are there tours to Cape Tribulation?

Definitely – and if you want to have the driving taken care of for the road trip, then this is a great idea.

Here are some great tours to consider:

  • Full day tour exploring the Daintree rainforest, the Mossman Falls and Cape Tribulation (£96pp)
  • Daintree Rainforest, with stops at Port Douglas and Wildlife Habitat (£96pp)
  • Mossman Gorge – with a Dreamtime Indigenous Guided Walk (£40)
  • From Cairns: Daintree National Park Day Trip and Night Tour (£195)

Cairns: The Starting Point

The starting point for all trips further north, and the last large city before the huge impenetrable rainforests of the Cape York Peninsula. Cairns is a tropical city that is action-packed with things to do. In fact, I have never been anywhere with some many exciting and varied activities in one concentrated location.

Of course, one of the most popular things to do in Cairns is to take boat trip to the incredible Great Barrier Reef . You can either do this as a day trip, or book an overnight stay on the awesome Sunlover Reef pontoon. I’ve done several snorkelling trips out to the reef, and visited both the stunning Fitzroy Island and Green Island, both of which were amazing.

Overnight stay on the Great Barrier Reef

The waterfront in Cairns is incredible and the heart of the city’s action. Make sure to spend time at the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, which is one of my favourite pools anywhere.

Other than explore the vibrant underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef and the city itself, there are simply so many other things to do in Cairns. From discovering waterfalls, to bungee jumping or a foodie tour and wine tasting in the Atherton Tablelands , you could easily spend two weeks in Cairns alone. Here’s my pick of some other top activities:

  • Brave the ultimate leap of faith at the  AJ Hackett bungee jump centre
  • Go  ATV riding in the rainforest
  • Take the train to spend the day at the  Kuranda Rainforest Skyway , an awesome journey across the rainforest finishing at the epic Mossman Falls.
  • Join a  tour of the Atherton Tablelands,  and visit beautiful waterfalls and scenic lakes (including the famous Milla Milla Falls)
  • Spend the day at Babinda Boulders, a swimming hole surrounded by dense rainforest. Or  join this tour  to explore here, plus the beautiful Wooroonooran Rainforest.
  • Visit  Josephine Falls , and spend the day in and out of the cascading pools
  • Visit the  Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Centre
  • Enjoy an  epic skydive over Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef

The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon

Where to stay in Cairns

Cairns offers some great value for accommodation, meaning normally expensive hotel brand, can be quite affordable. For example, the Shangri-La at The Marina  (£90pn) or the  Pullman Reef Casino  (from £97pn)

A great value centrally-located hotel would be  Pacific Hotel Cairns  (from £63pn). Or for those on a lower budget, there is the Gilligans Backpacker Resort  (dorm from £17pn, private room from £70). This huge complex has some of the best facilities I have experienced anywhere. It’s a lively party place but does also offer great value if you book out a 4 or 6 bed dorm for your group.

If you’re looking to camp, or are travelling the East Coast in a camper van, then it’s worth noting that there are no free camping options in the city. But there are some great paid campsites on the edge of town – make sure to check this  guide on camping near Cairns .

A stunning sunset over Cairns

Cairns to Cape Tribulation Road Trip Itinerary

  • Driving distance from Cairns to Port Douglas: 68km (1hour) along the Captain Cook Highway
  • Driving distance from Port Douglas to Cape Tribulation: 75km (1h30)

Starting from Cairns, you head north on the Captain Cook Highway towards the rainforest. The scenic route winds its way along the coastline, offering incredible views at every turn. There are plenty of stunning viewpoints to stop at along the way, as well as gorgeous stretches of sandy beaches.

Driving from Cairns to Cape Tribulation

Port Douglas

The upscale resort town of Port Douglas is definitely worth a stop. The main street is well worth exploring, as it is lined with boutique stores, charming cafes and excellent restaurants. There’s also a beautiful four mile sandy beach to relax on (but beware of potential roaming crocodiles!).

If you were doing this road trip over the course of a few days, then I’d definitely recommend spending a night or two in Port Douglas.

Here are some of the best places to stay in this beautiful town:

  • The beautiful  Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort  (from £129 pn)
  • Or the stunning  Shantara Resort (from £229 pn).

Port Douglas from Cairns

Mossman Gorge

After Port Douglas, and as you continue further north, you’ll pass by the awesome Mossman Gorge. If you fancy cooling off with a dip in the waterfalls, this is a great place to do so – but note the water can have strong currents. Alternatively, there are some hiking tracks in the rainforest here and an awesome suspension bridge.

The Daintree River Crossing

There’s a small car and passenger ferry which you must take to cross the Daintree River Crossing. This water is crocodile-infested, and if you’re lucky enough, a guide might help spot them for you. On our way back, we were fortunate enough to see some thrashing in the water under the bright lights of a guide’s torch beam.

Daintree Rainforest

Now you’re in the heart of the world’s oldest rainforest, and it was just a 2 hour drive from Cairns! The towering canopies create tunnels almost as you drive the narrow, winding roads – it’s amazing. I recommend first heading to the Daintree Discovery Centre where you can pick up a map and an audioguide.

Entry costs $35 AUD per adult and includes access to many of the elevated canopy walkways, which are awesome. There’s also zip-lining (locally called ‘jungle surfing’ at an extra cost ($109 per adult) or river cruises to spot more crocs.

You can easily spend a couple of hours exploring this area.

Cape Tribulation

From the Daintree Discovery Centre, I recommend driving on through the stunning rainforest road until you arrive at Cape Tribulation. The winding road weaves past stunning beaches, and you can stop and park up at any of them quite easily. The beaches were nearly always totally deserted and we’d have them entirely to ourselves. They really were the perfect reminder that you are in a near-untouched corner of the world. Amazing!

Note, you should not swim in the sea at these beaches as there are crocodiles. These beaches are considered some of the most dangerous in the world. Partly due to crocs, and also the potentially fatal stings from box jellyfish (if you visit between Jan and March).

Beaches in Cape Tribulation

There are a good number of eco-lodges and rainforest accommodation between the Discovery Centre and Cape Tribulation. So if you choose to stay overnight, I recommend the following:

  • Niramaya Villas & Spa  (around £450pn)
  • Thala Beach Nature Resort  (around £220pn)
  • Noah Creek Eco Huts  (around £157pn)

It’s a super special experience staying in a cabin in the heart of the towering canopies. You’re surrounded completely by the magical sights, sounds and smells of the rainforest. And if you wanted to see some of the most infamous snakes, spiders and creepy crawlies of Australia – a stay in the Daintree Rainforest will make sure of this!

There are also plenty more activities in Cape Tribulation, from beach horse riding, wildlife spotting and hiking.

Cape Tribulation to Cairns

On the drive back to Cairns, why not stop at some of the other awesome attractions on route? One of my favourite places is the Kuranda Skyrail, which you could also visit as a day trip from Cairns too . This is another unique way to get up close and personal to the rainforest in a totally unique way.

Best things to do in Cairns

So that’s the end of my road trip itinerary guide for Cairns to Cape Tribulation drive. This is definitely a bucket list experience on any Australia adventure, and can be done in one day, or spread over a couple of days. And of course, as noted, you can join a tour if you’d prefer not to drive.

I hope this is useful for you if you’re planning a trip to Cairns and Tropical North Queensland. If you’re planning to travel the East Coast of Australia, then do make sure to check out my detailed road trip itinerary guide here.

  • Flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Jasper in December 2023 may impact some of the suggested attractions and roads we have mentioned in this post. Please check the current situation with the Queensland Department of Traffic & Main Roads .

Overall, the distance between the two destinations is approximately 140 km, and for most people, it involves traveling north along the Captain Cook Highway and Cape Tribulation Road. Doing this showcases incredible views of tropical beaches and the sparkling coastline.

As an alternative, however, you might wish to detour inland along National Route 1. The journey will take you out past the Kuranda State Forest to Mareeba, up past Biboohra, Southedge, and Julatten towards Mowbray National Park , which will eventually take you out to Mossman.

Doing it will add about an hour of transit time. But you will see some incredible hinterland scenery and be able to visit quaint small towns and significant indigenous sites.

The drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation on a Far North Queensland road trip will take about 2.5 hours without stopping.

When planning your Cape Tribulation itinerary, be aware you can easily visit it on a self-drive day trip from Cairns . However, if this is likely to be the only time you will see this part of Australia, we recommend you spend at least 2-3 days completing this drive and stay in the Daintree.

There is so much to see and do in this part of Tropical Far North Queensland; the best way is to take your time immersing yourself in it.

Ideally, the more time you can devote to doing it, the better, but if you can set aside 2 – 3 days to complete it, you will get an excellent insight into what makes the region so unique and special.

  • Be aware that to get to Cape Tribulation, you must catch a short 5-minute Daintree River Ferry across the water. The ferry can take 30 cars at a time and runs daily 6:00 AM to midnight. It’s important to note that the ferry cannot operate at extremely low tides or in extreme weather conditions, so factor in any potential delays for the ferry crossing when planning your trip into the Daintree.

The best time of year to engage in a Cairns to Cape Tribulation road trip is during the dry season, typically from April to November . This period offers the most favourable weather conditions and the least chance of encountering heavy rainfall or cyclones, making it the ideal time for a comfortable and enjoyable road trip.

During the dry season, you can expect milder temperatures with warm, sunny days and cooler nights, creating pleasant driving conditions. The humidity is lower, relieving the oppressive heat and making outdoor activities more enjoyable. Additionally, the reduced rainfall means that roads from Cairns to Cape Trib are generally in better condition, making the journey smoother and safer.

Exploring the lush rainforests and pristine beaches of Cape Tribulation is more rewarding during the dry season, as the clear skies and drier weather allow for better visibility of the stunning landscapes and wildlife. The Great Barrier Reef, which you can access from Cairns, also offers exceptional diving and snorkeling opportunities during this time, with excellent underwater visibility.

AU Cairns to Cape Tribulation Road Trip - Cape Tribulation

Remember that the period between June and August is considered the peak tourist season in this region. While this means more tourists and fellow travelers and potentially higher accommodation prices, it also indicates that the area is bustling with vibrant events, festivals, and an array of attractions to enhance your road trip experience.

If you want to avoid the crowds and secure more budget-friendly options, consider planning your road trip during the shoulder months of April – May and September – November. These months still offer pleasant weather and slightly fewer tourists.

In contrast, the wet season, from December to March, can be challenging for a road trip. Heavy rains, flooding, and the possibility of tropical cyclones can disrupt travel plans and make some roads impassable.

While the rainforest scenery is undoubtedly more lush during this time, it’s essential to exercise caution and check weather conditions and road closures before embarking on the journey during the wet season.

Remember to stop and take photos at the picture-perfect beaches and visit Rex Lookout for panoramic views of the coastline and Double Island.

AU Cairns to Cape Tribulation Road Trip - Port Douglas

Once you arrive in Port Douglas, prepare to be enchanted by its stunning beaches. For a bird’s-eye view of Four Mile Beach and Cairns, head to Flagstaff Hill. You can reach the lookout by car or take the Flagstaff Hill Trail, which winds along the craggy coastline through the verdant jungle canopy.

If your visit falls on a Sunday, you can explore the Port Douglas Markets in ANZAC Park by the ocean. Alternatively, rent some bikes and ride along Four Mile Beach, taking in the salty sea air.

Port Douglas offers plenty of family-friendly accommodations with excellent amenities. There are also several restaurants and cafes catering to various cuisines and budgets. Staying in Port Douglas makes an excellent alternative to Cairns for many Far North Queensland visitors who love this small town’s relaxed pace.

Without making any stops, the drive from Cairns to the gateway to the Daintree Forest takes a little over an hour. Once there, one of the first things you should do is visit the Mossman Gorge .

Its granite boulders and sandy banks make it the perfect place to cool off. And after your swim, why not go on a fascinating Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk with the Kuku Yalanji Traditional Owners?

AU Cairns to Cape Tribulation Road Trip - Daintree National Park

This fantastic tour is a terrific way for kids to learn about lore and stories relating to Creation. You’ll visit important cultural sites, picturesque rainforest streams, and humpies  – traditional shelters made of bark or branches.

In the indigenous Kuku Yalanji language, the word Ngadiku translates to ‘stories and legends from a long time ago’. This is exactly what you’ll experience on these tours.

The Daintree Rainforest is hundreds of millions of years old and is the oldest living tropical rainforest in the world. Take a fascinating Daintree Forest self-drive tour to see the best of what the region has to offer. Nature lovers, in particular, will enjoy seeing gorgeous Ulysses butterflies, Boyd’s Rainforest Dragons, and stunning spurwood trees.

Stop in at the Daintree Discovery Centre to learn more about the world’s oldest rainforest, from forest floor to canopy top. With a guided audio tour, you will follow a series of boardwalks and aerial walkways leading to the Rainforest Canopy Tower for a bird’s eye view of the rainforest.

For those looking for even more adventure, head to the Daintree River. Just 39 kilometers from Mossman Gorge, you can take an hour-long Wildlife and Crocodile Cruise. Keep your eyes peeled for giant saltwater crocodiles, birds, frogs, and green tree snakes in their natural habitat

(NB, the town of Daintree sees you south of the river; a good option for Cairns day trippers who do not want to travel as far as Cape Tribulation and cross on the ferry.)

Although the roads are largely sealed and well marked if you’d prefer to have someone else do the driving and get some first-hand commentary as you go, many tour companies are operating out of Cairns that can provide not only guided tours but extreme adventure trips into the Daintree.

Driving beyond Cape Tribulation to Cooktown and further is a remarkable extension of your adventure, taking you through some of Australia’s most remote and pristine landscapes. Here’s what you can expect on this scenic journey:

  • If you are renting a car for this trip, check how far north you are permitted to drive; some rental companies will not cover your journey on the unsealed roads beyond Cape Tribulation

Cape Tribulation to Cooktown

After leaving Cape Tribulation, the road becomes more rugged and adventurous as you head northward along the famous Bloomfield Track . This off-road track winds its way through the heart of the Daintree Rainforest, offering breathtaking views of dense jungle, river crossings, and occasional glimpses of the Coral Sea.

The track requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle, and checking the road conditions before attempting this route is essential. Upon reaching Cooktown, you’ll find a charming small town with a rich history dating back to Captain James Cook’s visit in 1770.

Take some time to explore Cooktown’s historical sites, including the James Cook Museum , which houses a collection of artifacts from the famous explorer’s time here. The town is also surrounded by natural beauty, with nearby national parks, waterfalls, and the scenic Endeavour River .

Battle Camp Road

For those seeking an even more adventurous route, consider taking the Battle Camp Road from Cooktown to Laura. This rugged track cuts through remote wilderness, crossing rivers and providing access to some stunning camping spots. Again, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is essential for this route, and it’s recommended only for experienced off-road drivers.

Laura and Quinkan Country

If you take the Battle Camp Road, you’ll arrive in Laura, renowned for its Quinkan rock art sites . These ancient Aboriginal rock art galleries provide a glimpse into Indigenous history and culture, dating back thousands of years.

AU Cairns to Cape Tribulation Road Trip - Laura

From Cooktown or Laura, you can continue your journey further north along the Cape York Peninsula. This area is remote and rugged, with limited services and facilities, so being well-prepared and self-sufficient for an extended outback adventure is crucial.

Cape York Peninsula

The Cape York Peninsula offers an authentic Australian outback experience, with vast savannahs, unique wildlife, and cultural encounters with Indigenous communities. Attractions like the iconic Tip of Australia (Cape York) , the remote Pajinka Wilderness Lodge, and the unforgettable Old Telegraph Track await the intrepid traveler.

Return Journey

Remember that the return journey from Cape York to Cairns is a considerable distance of around 680 km, which will take about 3-4 days to complete. Planning accordingly with enough time and resources for the drive back is advisable.

  • Take plenty of water and hydrolates on the Cairns to Cape Tribulation road trip, especially in summer. Temperatures often exceed 35°C (95°F), making it very easy to dehydrate.
  • While driving to Cape Tribulation from Cairns, wear sunscreen at all times, even in the car. The sun’s rays are so intense you can get sunburnt through your windscreen or side windows.
  • Be sure to check the service times of the Daintree River Ferry over to Cape Tribulation. It varies depending on the weather and season, so be mindful not to get caught out (heading north, avoid mid-morning through midday, and heading south, avoid mid-afternoon to around 5:00 pm when queues are longest)
  • Once you cross over the Daintree River into Cape Tribulation, petrol stations can be few and far between. So fill up your tank before leaving Cairns and top up before Port Douglas or Mossman if necessary.
  • Mobile phone reception is also patchy in the Daintree once you cross the river. You will get a little in Daintree Village and along the Cape Trib road until Thorntons Beach; beyond that, expect no signal from Telstra or Optus.
  • DO NOT swim in any of the tropical beaches or pristine waterways unless lifeguards patrol them. Far North Queensland is full of saltwater crocodiles, so swimming on unpatrolled beaches is not advisable, especially if you go into the water alone with no one else around.
  • You should ALWAYS only swim on beaches with designated stinger nets that lifeguards patrol. Marine stingers like box jellyfish and Irukandji are in the waters for much of the year and can kill you.

WELCOME TO THE WILDERNESS

The Daintree is the place to immerse yourself in nature and disconnect from the modern world. It’s a raw, wild, ancient environment that resembles a real-life Jurassic Park , where it looks entirely possible that dinosaurs could emerge from the lush undergrowth.

ENVELOPED IN GREEN

Covering 1200sq k between the Mossman Gorge and Bloomfield River, the Daintree Rainforest is one of the most complex ecosystems on earth. An estimated 180 million years old, it is tens of millions of years older than the Amazon and contains living examples of unique ancient plants as well as thousands of species of birds, animals and reptiles.

A WALK THROUGH PARADISE

Despite its rugged, untouched nature, the Daintree is easily accessible on a day-trip. Walk through the forest on hiking trails and wooden boardwalks, take a dip in the Emmagen Creek swimming hole or paddleboard along the still waters of the Mossman River. Huge cassowary birds peck their way through the undergrowth and one of the best places in Tropical North Queensland to spot crocodiles is along the Daintree River.

WHERE RAINFOREST MEETS THE REEF

The remote headland of Cape Tribulation is where two UNESCO World Heritage Sites meet – the Wet Tropics Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The forest tumbles right down to the coast with just a thin strip of sand separating it from the clear blue water. And accessing the reef is simple … with great snorkelling around Mackay and Undine reefs.

Phone reception is limited in the Daintree, so take the opportunity for a digital detox.

There are backpacker and budget accommodation options in the Daintree, but also a handful of places that offer a unique brand of sustainable eco luxury. There’s little contact with the outside world and many produce their own power on-site.

Pay attention to crocodile warning signs posted around rivers, swimming holes and the ocean. While crocodile attacks are unlikely, you need to be sensible and respect the advice of park rangers.

It’s a good idea to stock up on food and essential supplies in Mossman and Port Douglas before heading north.

Accessibility Statement

Compliance status

We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.

To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.

This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.

Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.

If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.

These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.

Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside it.

Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
  • Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Browser and assistive technology compatibility

We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).

Notes, comments, and feedback

Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs. There may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Cairns to Cape Tribulation: Road Trip Along the Great Barrier Reef Drive

Like it? Share it!

Last Updated on January 19, 2024 by Ariana Svenson

If you are travelling to tropical North Queensland and are considering a once-in-a-lifetime road trip adventure, then we highly recommend exploring the Great Barrier Reef Drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation.  Cape Tribulation is the only place in the world where two UNESCO World Heritage sites meet: the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, hence their slogan, “where reef meets rainforest”.  If you’re planning a Cairns Family Holiday , you won’t regret including a Cairns to Cape Tribulation road trip in your itinerary!

This post may contain affiliate links, from which we would earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. More info in my disclaimer.

Cairns to Cape Tribulation: Road Trip Along the Great Barrier Reef Drive

Cairns to Cape Tribulation Road Trip Itinerary

Cairns to Port Douglas: 68km (1h)

Port Douglas to Cape Trib: 75km (1.5h)

The Great Barrier Reef Drive along the Captain Cook Highway is one of the most scenic drives in Australia.  The drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation (known by locals as “Cape Trib”) takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.  The road winds along the east coast of Queensland with stunning views of the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef all along the way.

There are endless things to do along the way.  There are so many we have done a full post on Cairns to Port Douglas too called  19 AMAZING Things To Do In Port Douglas | The Best Cairns Holidays .  Here’s a quick summary before we dive into the details:

  • Stop to stretch your legs at the Rex Lookout, just 42km (about 40 minutes) from Cairns.
  • Visit the Mossman Gorge and enjoy a self-guided rainforest walk, a guided tour or a swim in one the Mossman Gorge swimming holes.
  • Take a wildlife cruise on the Daintree River.  The River is home to crocodiles, numerous species of fish, lizards and snakes, birds and butterflies;
  • Visit the Daintree Discovery Centre – a great place to learn about the tropical rainforest.  One of our favourite things is a walk over the Aerial Walkway and climbing the Canopy tour.  There is also a cassowary circuit, flying foxes, spiders, and insects.  Read some fascinating Amazing Daintree Rainforest Facts in this post !

Best Time to Visit: Daintree Rainforest Climate & Seasons

We recommend visiting Cairns and Port Douglas in the dry season, from May through to November.  This is also a good time for visiting the Great Barrier Reef as visibility is usually better for snorkeling.

The area in which Daintree National Park is located has one of the wettest climates in Australia.  During the “wet season”, from December to April, there are heavy, frequent downpours.  Some areas receive over six meters of rainfall annually!  Maximum temperatures through the wet season range from 27 to 33 degrees Celsius, with humidity often exceeding 80 percent.  That said, temps in the rainforest can be surprisingly mild due to the protective canopy layer of tall trees.  The air is often humid but cool.

Wet season is also stinger season in Northern Queensland, which means it’s not a good time to swim the Great Barrier Reef.

Great Barrier Reef Drive: Day Trip or Overnight?

Whether you do the drive from Cairns to Cape Tribulation as a day trip vs an overnight trip depends totally on how much time you have, and how much driving you like to do.  It can totally be done as a there-and-back trip in one day.  However, this means as much as 6 hours of driving total which can be a lot – especially if you have kids in the car.  If you have the time, we recommend moseying up the road and stopping at some of the northern beaches along the way and then spending the night in Port Douglas before heading deep into the Daintree Rainforest.

You can also drive all the way to Cape Trib and spend a night there.  Spending a night inside the rainforest can be a really special experience.  There are many eco lodges and cabins to choose from.  Camping is also an option!  Find more details about where to stay in Cape Trib in our accommodation post .

Which car to hire is always an important consideration when making your holiday plans.  Take a look at the offers from Discover Cars or Economy Bookings .

DiscoverCars.com

Port Douglas

Starting from Cairns, the first stop on your drive is Port Douglas, only a one-hour drive north.  While Cairns is quite a bustling spot, Port Douglas has a much more laid-back vibe.  It’s a great place to relax, surrounded by nature, and it’s an excellent jumping off point for visiting the Great Barrier Reef.

There are plenty of things on the way to Port Douglas that are worth a visit, like the Thala Beach Nature Reserve, Ellis Beach or Palm Cove.  What we do know is that you won’t be short of things to do in Port Douglas if you decide to spend a while there!  In fact, check out our  19 AMAZING Things To Do In Port Douglas .

If you are not planning to call into Port Douglas, the main highway doesn’t enter the town at all.  You can drive straight past and continue through Mossman until you reach Mossman Gorge.  It is 78km or about an hour and a quarter from Cairns.

Exploring Mossman Gorge Australia

Mossman Gorge

The Mossman Gorge has always been an excellent place to experience the Daintree Rainforest.  Part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, it is located within the traditional territory of the Kuku Yalanji people who have been part of managing access to the Gorge since 2007.  Your gateway into Mossman Gorge is the Mossman Gorge Centre.  Here you can find information, book guided Dreamtime Walks, tour an indigenous art gallery or take a break at their café, which features bush tucker food.

From the centre, you take a short 10-minute ride on a low-emissions shuttle bus into the Gorge itself.  Once there, there are various swimming holes to visit and walks you can do throughout Mossman Gorge.  You should allow at least 1.5h to visit Mossman Gorge, depending on how much time you want to spend swimming or exploring the rainforest.  Read more about the Mossman Gorge walks and swimming here!

En route between Mossman Gorge and the Cape Tribulation Road turnoff you could check out the Nightwings Rainforest Centre or the Daintree Wild Zoo.  Alternatively, if it is around lunchtime why not grab a bite to eat at the Crossroads Café!

Daintree River Crossing - Great Barrier Reef Drive

Daintree River Crossing

From Mossman Gorge it’s 32km or about a 30-minute drive to the Daintree River ferry crossing.  If your objective is to skip the river cruises and head straight into the rainforest, then you will turn right onto the Cape Tribulation Road at the Lower Daintree.  There is no bridge over the Daintree River.  This ferry is your only way to continue your scenic drive along the Great Barrier Reef Drive.  The ferry operates from 5 am to midnight every day, with crossings approximately every hour.

The crossing takes 10 minutes and costs around $17 for a one-way ticket for a car, or $30 for a return ticket.  Note that the return ticket is flexible.  It can even be used on a different day if you plan to overnight in Cape Tribulation.  Prices are subject to change.  For an up-to-date full timetable, check out the official ferry website .

If you’re lucky, you might spot some crocodiles in the river during the passage!

Daintree River Cruises

If you wish to do a Daintree River Cruise, continue on the Mossman Daintree Road past the ferry terminal and head towards the Daintree village itself.  There are a number of different Daintree River Cruise operators, and a wide range of departures.  These are either on the hour or every half hour, depending on the company you choose.

A river cruise up the Daintree River is a wonderful way to get a different perspective of the rainforest and its ecosystem.  Several different tour operators depart on one hour river cruises from the car ferry boarding point.  These tours explore the mangrove estuary which is home to a seriously amazing variety of wildlife.

There is one animal though, that seems to be on everyone’s bucket list – the Estuarine Crocodile!  Also known as saltwater crocodiles, they are the largest of all living reptiles.  They can seem deceptively docile but don’t let that fool you!  These iconic Australian animals are actually apex predators, and will attack prey with surprising agility.

The different boat operators claim a 98 or 99% success rate in spotting crocodiles, so it’s not guaranteed.  You can also see tree snakes, frogs, crabs and fish.  When choosing your Daintree River Cruise make sure that you look at the eco credentials of the different operators.  From our reviews some may be more sustainable than others.

After the cruise, you will head back to the Daintree River Crossing in order to continue on to the Rainforest itself.

Cairns to Cape Tribulation: Road Trip Along the Great Barrier Reef Drive

Daintree Rainforest

After crossing the river you’re now inside the Daintree Rainforest, just 2 hours away from Cairns.  If it is lunchtime, you might like to treat yourself to a delicious lunch at the highly recommended Julaymba Restaurant at Daintree Ecolodge or Daintree Teahouse Restaurant .

If you are doing a one-day Cairns to Cape Tribulation road trip, you will want to keep moving!  There are two important places to visit between the ferry crossing and the Cape Tribulation village.  They are the Alexandra Lookout and the Daintree Discovery Centre.

Alexandra Lookout

Also known by its Indigenous name, Walu Wugirriga, the Alexandra Lookout is your first stop inside the Daintree Rainforest.  It is located just 10 minutes inside the rainforest after you cross the river.  From here you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Daintree River, the coast, Port Douglas, Low Isles, Snapper Island, Cape Kimberley, Black Rock and Shipwreck Bay.

The lookout has been a government-managed site since 1993.  This is in order to preserve this beautiful part of the Wet Tropics Heritage Site.

Daintree Discovery Centre

Just 5 minutes’ drive from the Alexandra Lookout or 15 minutes’ drive from the ferry crossing, the Daintree Discovery Centre is a must-visit place.  This is another place that gives fantastic perspective of the Daintree Rainforest through the many elevated walkways.  Definitely take advantage of the audio guide to learn more.

Cost of entry to the Centre is $35 per adult, which includes access to the canopy walkways.  You can also add “jungle surfing” – a zip-line through the canopy – for an addition $109 per adult.

Daintree Rainforest to Cape Tribulation

Daintree Rainforest to Cape Tribulation

Cape Tribulation – where rainforest meets the reef – is a 50-minute to one hour drive from Daintree, depending on how many stops you make.  Cape Tribulation got its name from Captain James Cook.  His expedition on the HMAS Endeavour ran aground here and they had to put to shore – giving him much “tribulation”!  Along the way from Daintree to Cape Trib you will pass beautiful white sandy beaches – totally isolated and untouched.  They aren’t even signposted!

Note :  Do not try to go swimming, no matter how inviting the water looks.  This area is known for being home to Saltwater Crocodiles.

Cape Tribulation to Cairns

If you’re doing the Cairns to Cape Tribulation drive in one day, you might want to split up the activities and see something different on the way back.  Cape Tribulation to Port Douglas is about an hour and 45 minutes.  If you missed it on the way down, you might want to stop off here to wander the boutiques on Macrossan Street before having dinner at one of Port Douglas’s diverse eateries.

Another thing you can do to mix things up on your road trip is to stop off at the Kuranda Skyrail on the way back from Cape Tribulation to Cairns.  The skyrail offers another perspective on the rainforest which might be a nice to complement to your day’s activities.  You can also visit Kuranda and ride the Skyrail as a day trip from Cairns.  For more on the Kuranda Skyrail and Cairns daytrips, read our  17 BEST Cairns Day Trips – Explore Tropical North Queensland .

Cairns vs Airlie Beach: Which is Better?

Cairns vs Airlie Beach – choosing between these two stunning Queensland destinations can be challenging.

This blog covers everything from the best Great Barrier Reef access to cost comparisons, transport options, and top attractions.

Having lived in Townsville for six months, I’ve explored both areas extensively. Whether you’re after vibrant city life or serene island vibes, this guide helps you decide which destination best suits your travel style.

Let’s dive into the details and discover the perfect spot for your next adventure.

Cairns or Airlie Beach: Best Place to See the Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is renowned for its easy access to the Great Barrier Reef, making it a prime spot for diving and snorkelling.

The city offers numerous tours, taking you to vibrant coral gardens with marine life. Many options exist, from the iconic Green Island to the vast outer reef.

On the other hand, Airlie Beach provides access to the Whitsunday Islands, including the famous Heart Reef. The waters here are calmer, ideal for sailing and family-friendly snorkelling adventures.

Each location offers a unique reef experience, catering to different preferences and activities.

Cairns Or Airlie Beach: Cost Comparison

When comparing costs, Cairns typically offers more budget-friendly accommodation options, with a range that includes hostels and mid-range hotels.

It’s a larger city with competitive pricing on food and activities, making it suitable for travellers on a tighter budget.

Cairns offers a variety of tour operators for trips to the Great Barrier Reef, often making these tours more affordable.

Airlie Beach, though smaller, tends to have higher accommodation costs, particularly for resorts and boutique stays.

Dining and activities in Airlie Beach can be pricier, especially if you’re exploring the Whitsundays.

However, the unique island experiences and luxurious stays can justify the extra spend for many travellers.

Cairns and Airlie Beach Nearest Airports

Cairns Airport, located just 7 kilometres from the city centre, serves the city. This airport offers domestic and international flights, providing convenient travel options for visitors from numerous locations.

Airlie Beach’s closest airport is Whitsunday Coast Airport in Proserpine, about 40 minutes away by car. It primarily handles domestic flights, with connections from major Australian cities.

While smaller than Cairns Airport, it provides easy access to the Whitsunday Islands and surrounding areas. Both airports offer shuttle services, car hire, and other transport options to reach your destination smoothly.

Cairns Vs Airlie Beach: Best Beaches

Cairns offers picturesque beaches such as Trinity Beach and Palm Cove, which are perfect for relaxing and enjoying the tropical vibe.

However, for actual swimming, Cairns has fewer swimming options due to the presence of crocodiles and stingers, especially during certain seasons.

Airlie Beach shines with its artificial lagoon in the town centre, providing a safe swimming spot year-round. Nearby, you’ll find stunning natural beaches like Whitehaven Beach, famous for its immaculate white sand and exceptionally clear waters.

These beaches are part of the Whitsunday Islands, offering some of the best coastal experiences in Australia.

Car Hire in Cairns and Airlie Beach: Is it Necessary?

In Cairns, hiring a car can be beneficial if you plan to explore beyond the city, such as visiting the Daintree Rainforest or Atherton Tablelands. The town has a reliable public transport system, so a car is optional for getting around town.

Airlie Beach is a compact town where most attractions are within walking distance. However, hiring a car can offer more flexibility and convenience if you want to explore the surrounding areas or make day trips to places like Proserpine or Bowen.

Cairns vs Airlie Beach Safety Considerations

Due to their tropical environments, Airlie Beach and Cairns both require some safety precautions.

In Cairns, be mindful of crocodiles in waterways and stingers during the warmer months.

Many beaches have stinger nets, but it’s essential to heed warning signs and swim in designated areas.

Airlie Beach also faces stinger risks, particularly in the Whitsundays, and some areas may have crocodiles. Swimming in the town’s lagoon or beaches with stinger nets is recommended.

Both destinations have good medical facilities but always take local advice and precautions seriously to ensure a safe visit.

Cairns Or Airlie Beach: Population Details

Cairns is a bustling city with a population of around 150,000 people. It’s a vibrant hub with various amenities, making it a lively place to visit. The city’s size supports multiple services and activities, catering to tourists and locals.

Airlie Beach, in contrast, is much smaller, with a population of approximately 1,200 residents.

Despite its size, it’s a popular tourist destination known for its friendly community and laid-back atmosphere. The town thrives on tourism, offering visitors a charming and intimate experience.

Cairns Or Airlie Beach: Dining Options

Cairns boasts a diverse food scene with numerous restaurants and cafes. The Esplanade is a hotspot for dining, offering everything from fresh seafood to international cuisine.

Airlie Beach has a vibrant dining scene, with many eateries lining the main street. Enjoy fresh seafood at local favourites like Fish D’vine or sample international dishes at various restaurants and cafes.

The Saturday markets at Airlie Beach Foreshore allow one to taste local delicacies and pick up some fresh produce. For a special treat, consider a dining cruise around the Whitsundays.

Airlie Beach and Cairns Traffic Conditions

Cairns is a larger city with more traffic, especially during peak hours. However, the city’s layout includes well-maintained roads and public transport options, easing travel within and around the city.

Parking can be challenging in the city centre but manageable in suburban areas.

Airlie Beach’s smaller size means less traffic congestion. Most attractions and amenities are within walking distance, reducing the need for extensive driving.

Parking is generally easier to find, making it convenient for tourists. The relaxed pace of Airlie Beach contributes to its laid-back charm.

Airlie Beach Vs Cairns Weather Differences

Cairns enjoys a tropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The wet season, from November to April, brings heavy rainfall and occasional cyclones. Temperatures during this period can soar above 30°C.

Airlie Beach also has a tropical climate but experiences slightly milder temperatures. Summers are warm and humid, while winters are pleasantly mild.

The wet season here is similar to Cairns, with most rainfall between November and April. Both destinations offer warm weather year-round, which is ideal for outdoor activities and beach visits.

Winter Temperatures & Rainfall (June to August)

Cairns’ winter temperatures range from 17°C to 26°C, offering mild and comfortable weather.

Rainfall is minimal during this season, providing an ideal time for outdoor activities and exploring the Great Barrier Reef without enduring summer’s heat and humidity.

Airlie Beach experiences similar winter temperatures, typically between 16°C and 25°C. Rainfall is also low, with clear, sunny days being the norm.

This season is perfect for enjoying the beaches and scenic tours of the Whitsunday Islands in pleasant, cool weather.

Summer Temperatures & Rainfall (December to March)

Cairns experiences hot and humid summers, ranging from 24°C to 31°C. This period, known as the wet season, brings heavy rainfall and high humidity.

Cyclones can occur, adding to the intensity of the weather. Despite the rain, the lush, green landscapes make it a beautiful time to visit.

Airlie Beach experiences warm and humid summers, typically between 23°C and 30°C. During the wet season, significant rainfall and occasional thunderstorms occur.

The tropical weather is ideal for enjoying the vibrant greenery and the warm sea, though it’s essential to be prepared for sudden downpours.

Cairns Vs Airlie Beach: Availability of Public Transport

Cairns has a well-developed public transport system, including buses operated by Sunbus, which connect key areas of the city and its suburbs.

The city also has a regional airport with numerous domestic and international flights, making travelling to and from Cairns easy. Additionally, taxis and ride-sharing services are readily available, offering convenient options for getting around the city.

Due to its smaller size, Airlie Beach’s public transport options are more limited. Whitsunday Transit provides bus services that connect Airlie Beach with surrounding areas, including the Proserpine Airport.

However, many attractions and amenities are within walking distance, and taxis and ride-sharing services are available for longer trips.

The relaxed pace of Airlie Beach means that getting around is generally straightforward, even without extensive public transport options.

Cairns and Airlie Beach Stinger Precautions

In Cairns, the marine stinger season runs from November to May. During this time, box jellyfish and Irukandji jellyfish are present in the waters, making swimming potentially dangerous.

To stay safe, swim only in designated netted areas, wear protective stinger suits, and heed all warnings from local authorities and lifeguards.

Airlie Beach also experiences stinger season from November to May. Box jellyfish and Irukandji can be found in these waters, so taking precautions is essential.

Swimming in netted enclosures, using stinger suits, and following local guidelines will help ensure a safe and enjoyable visit to the beach.

Cairns Vs Airlie Beach: Crocodile Presence

Cairns is known for its crocodile presence, particularly in the estuaries, rivers, and coastal areas. Saltwater crocodiles are common, so avoiding swimming in these areas is crucial.

Always heed warning signs and stay informed about crocodile sightings. Guided tours offer a safe way to view these impressive creatures in their natural habitat.

Airlie Beach also has saltwater crocodiles, though they are less commonly seen than in Cairns. To ensure safety, exercise caution around waterways and follow local advice. Stick to designated swimming areas and avoid secluded water bodies to minimise risk.
