3 of the Best Cincinnati Riverboat & Dinner Cruises

Take to the Ohio River and see Cincinnati in a different light on one of these excellent riverboat tours and dinner cruises.

The great city of Cincinnati sits on the north bank of the Ohio River, which splits it from the state of Kentucky. The best way to appreciate the cityscape on either side of the river is by floating along it. Taking a traditional riverboat along the Ohio, complete with a paddle wheel and open decks, is a fun and traditional way to go. Throw a dinner into the mix while watching the setting sun for an enhanced cruise experience. Here are three top options.

Cincinnati Historic Sightseeing Cruise

The Queen City, as Cincinnati is known (as well as ‘The Athens of the West’), was first settled in 1788 and the city’s skyline is best viewed from the Ohio River. On this 90-minute riverboat cruise, your captain will provide commentary about the buildings you pass and their relevance to the city’s past and present. You will also learn much about the parts of northern Kentucky visible during the trip. This tour is usually available at 3pm on Tue-Thu and Sat-Sun. From $26 per person.

Sunset Cruise on the Ohio River

bb riverboat cruises ohio river

The stunning River Queen is part of the BB Riverboats fleet of old-timey paddleboats. This charming white and red boat plies the Ohio River for two hours at sunset, as the lands of Kentucky and the Ohio city of Cincinnati are daubed in the warm glow of the fading light. There is also live music on board, setting a jolly tone as you explore this lovely stretch of water. There’s a cash bar on board for drinks and snacks. From $29 per person.

Cincinnati: Dinner Cruise on the Ohio River

Aboard the Belle of Cincinnati, you will find ample space on the decks and inside the cabins to sit and enjoy the river views. But the highlight of this two-hour tour is the dinner and dessert included in your cruise price. There are a number of different cruise options to choose from, including the captain’s and admiral’s dinner cruises, with the latter offering more dining options, including carved turkey, ribs and vegetarian pasta dishes. Alcoholic drinks can be purchased from the onboard bar for an additional fee. From $57 per person.

This Is What An Epic Night On A BB Riverboat Looks Like

BB Riverboats (a family-owned business based out of Newport, Kentucky) has been showing off the mighty Ohio since 1979. ... And the experience just keeps getting better. / IMAGE: Phil Armstrong

Sure, we might not have an ocean on our doorstep, or mountains to go along with our seven hills, but... Hey, we've got the Ohio River.

It’s mighty. It’s majestic. It’s magical.

Some of my favorite moments -- moments when I feel most at home in/ in love with the Queen City -- occur when I’m soaking up the skyline view along the river. There’s nothing like it. Truly.

So when given the opportunity to hop aboard a BB Riverboat for a Friday-night cruise down the Ohio, the immediate response was of course, “Yes.”

Strike that. Make it a “HECK yes!”

ABOUT BB RIVERBOATS

It’s a family-owned company that’s been in operation since 1979. Founded by Ben Bernstein & Betty Blake, the cruises were originally booked from the Mike Fink Restaurant in Covington. It operated out of its Covington Landing location until 2005, before relocating to Riverboat Row in Newport, Kentucky.

And that’s where our evening began.

ABOUT THE CRUISE

Imagine the best night of your life.

(... Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration. Because, in truth, the “best night of one’s life” is a fairly elusive thing. It can’t be planned or repeated. But if you somehow catch that night in a bottle, keep it that way. ‘Cause it ain’t happening again, my friends.)

Instead, how 'bout we simply imagine a truly amazing Friday night.

Good company, great weather, tasty food. And to cap it all off, a classic fireworks show.

Got all that in your mind? Lovely. 'Cause that’s pretty much what went down this past Friday. Of course, I’m skipping over a few details. Like, say... the MadTree beer tasting that occurred during dinner, for instance. (Those Shade cans, btw, are effing gorgeous.) And let’s not forget about the live band providing the night’s entertainment. Our lighters are in the air to you, gents.

Perhaps I was just in a really sentimental mood. (Okay, I was.) Perhaps I was just with the perfect group of friends. (Yeah, that too.)

Still, the hospitality from the crew -- everybody from servers to Cap’n Frank -- was first class. The night unfolded without a single misstep.

In a word, it was “perfection.”

ABOUT THE OPTIONS

But, hey, don’t let me be the judge. You should try it for yourself. The good news — and I mean "the really good news" — is that BB Riverboats is open year round.

The company offers a myriad of cruise options (e.g. wine tastings, pirates, princesses, super heroes... you name it). And if you’re that gung-ho, you can even get hitched while steamboatin’ down the Ohio. Weddings are already a night to remember, but a wedding on the Ohio River...? Now that’s kicking things up a notch.

Whatever you do, don’t forget your "flippy floppies." (Kidding. But I couldn’t resist.)

Have Fun on Virginia Waterways with These Riverboat Tours and Cruises

odyssey boat cruise on DC waterfront

See the Potomac or James rivers from a new perspective with these adventures.

By Bennett Freeze June 20, 2024

Looking for something new to do this summer? A boat cruise is an entertaining way to spend time with friends and family or grab brunch with a view.

Two prime locations for these adventures are the Potomac River near Washington, DC, and the James River near Richmond. These riverboat tours offer everything from close encounters with bald eagles to Fourth of July dinners to cruising the canals of Richmond. While most tours offer shelter from the elements, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.

Those sensitive to seasickness should perhaps opt for a shorter experience. Always book a cruise in advance, and don’t forget sunscreen if you plan to spend time on the deck. Make sure to plan where you’ll park the car ahead of time — most embarkments will have public parking with street parking close by.

If you’re planning on making the drive down to Richmond, be prepared to spend a whole day, and that means considering meals for your group. Most cruises and riverboat tours offer refreshments of some kind, but some are BYOB, so be sure to verify ahead of time if you want food or drink during your tour experience. Always make sure to arrive more than 15 minutes before the start of your tour.

For a memorable experience, try one of these riverboat cruises.
