Omkareshwara Temple

Omkareshwara Temple

According to the legend, the King killed a pious Brahmin for either his political ambition or because he coveted the Brahmin’s daughter. For whichever reason, innocent blood was spilt and the King had nightmares  from that day on.

On consulting other Brahmins he was told that only the special Shiva Lingam from Kashi in Varanasi would eliminate the Brahmin’s spirit.

He installed the lingam in the same spot as the killing of the Brahmin and built a temple to protect it. From that day on, the nightmares stopped and the temple premises is now protected and venerated for Lord Shiva.

The temple is a mix of Gothic and Islamic style architecture with the dome and minarets towering over the city giving the impression of a Muslim Dargah. Speciality: There is also a pond, with a small shrine in the centre, connected by a causeway where plenty of fish swim, making it  a huge attraction for children and devotees who are allowed to feed them. The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated here in great pomp and fervour lighting up the whole place and attracting many devotees to the shrine. Planning a trip to Coorg? Things to Carry

Things to Carry

Pack light when travelling to any place, the less you have to carry, the more you can explore and move around the place. Carry only the necessities as extra baggage and valuables will only make you cautious and worried about keeping it always in a safe place. Since Coorg is a hill station, the weather there can get really cold especially during the night. Also you will definitely indulge in some adventure activities throughout your stay. Below is a list of few essentials you must carry when travelling from Bangalore to Coorg.

- If you decide to go trekking or camping in Coor g to any of the peaks, it’s a strenuous and exhausting journey so things to keep your energy up like energy drinks, protein bars are essential.

- Not everyone is strong to battle these physical challenges so medicines for stomach upset, headaches, spray for body aches, tablets for vomiting, an antiseptic liquid or ointment for injuries any other medical condition treatment that you think you might need. You might not end up taking any medication, but prevention is always better than cure.

- Apart from medicines trekking has other challenges as well like insect bites, leeches as well as dehydration along the journey which many people don’t really take into account. So make sure you take along, bug or insect repellent, salt for the leeches and oral rehydration salts (ORS) in case of dehydration. Other trekking essentials include, torch, sleeping bag, tent(if camping), plenty of water, light food, sanitary essentials and a map or guide of the area incase you stray away from the group.

- If you’re travelling during the monsoons making sure to carry mosquito repellent or lemongrass oil which is a brilliant solution to keep those blood suckers away.

- While packing your clothes, take into account the duration of your stay and pack accordingly. Try and avoid carrying too much extra clothing as it will only increase the weight on you while travelling. Also pack clothing as per the weather condition, if you’re visiting Coorg in the summer, carry cotton clothes, if it’s in the winters make sure you carry warm clothes as temperatures at night get really chilly.

- For the monsoon visitors, also warm clothes are advised, along with a raincoat/jacket and an umbrella. What people may normally neglect are shoes, but It is very important to carry at least 2 pairs of good travelling shoes as feet can get infected due to prolonged soaking in the rain which can be fatal and ruin your experience of travelling and of the place itself.

- Living in the age of technology it is hard to stay away from the electronic gadget. So a handy mobile phone with a good camera, earphones, a DSLR camera for the shutterbugs, a charger, laptop if necessary, a power bank and an extra memory card if need be.

- For those who want to enjoy the true essence of village life and peace of mind, just a mobile phone would do the trick. Do not forget to carry ziplock plastic covers to protect your gadgets incase of rain.

- Identification proof and enough money for your trip. Try and not carry all your money in cash, instead, keep withdrawing as and when you might need.

- The last and the most important, always carry some amount of food and water with you, a bottle of water, a biscuit pack or even a fruit would do.

So here are a few things to keep in mind. Happy packing :) Must Checkout -  Coorg Tour Packages From Cochin                               Coorg Tour Packages From Mangalore

Travel Tips for Coorg Trip from Bangalore

Travel Tips for Coorg Trip from Bangalore

Travelling from Bangalore to Coorg can be an exhausting journey especially you are driving down. It’s a beautiful place where you’ll make unforgettable memories and see nature in its full glory. Here are a few tips to help you along your journey and during your stay, so you will be prepared for the journey ahead.

- If you’re travelling by bus from Bangalore, keep in mind that you’ll arrive early in the morning so make sure you’ve booked a hotel or homestay in Coorg in advance, else you’ll have to rely on the taxi drivers or wait for a few hours till the morning sets in and the town is better to get around.

- If you’re travelling by flight, be sure to read about the taxi rentals and so that you may not be fleeced and get a reasonable Bangalore to Coorg package.

- If you plan to drive, you need to be careful about a lot of things, since you’re entirely responsible for the journey. So get your vehicle checked and serviced, keep in a spare tyre and the essential tools in case of a puncture and carry your car related documents before you set out.

- Start your journey as early as possible to cover up as much distance before the heat and traffic sets in. Break your journey twice or thrice to keep your mind refreshed with a meal and some chai maybe. Ask the locals for good food joints and try out the best even along your journey.

- Do not drive fast as the exhaustion of a long journey might tire you out to and speed breakers or even wild animals that Coorg is famous for might go unnoticed. So drive safe and save your life as well as any roadside animals. It is advisable to drive in turns, so travel usually with another friend who can drive as well.

- On reaching Coorg, make the best of every minute there. Set out in the mornings and try and cover up as much sightseeing during the day, since most of the tourist attractions close by 6 pm.

- Visit each of the falls with a good pair of trekking shoes, especially during the monsoon as the ground can get really slippery.

- Make sure you read a bit about the tourist attractions before visiting them, so that your trip is not futile. For example, the Madikeri Fort is closed on Monday.

- Carry enough water and food if you plan to camp or trek to any of the peaks.

- Nights can get cold and windy on the peak and it's important to carry strong tents as well as a warm set of clothes in case you plan to camp overnight.

- Make sure you are physically and mentally fit before attempting any of the adventure activities, especially river rafting in Coorg  which can be really dangerous.

That’s all for now, have a safe trip and keep these tips in mind. Coorg is waiting to be explored, go get there... Also Checkout -  Coorg Tour Packages From Vijayawada                              Coorg Tour Packages From Hyderabad

Credits: Jean JonesOne of the highest peaks in the Kodagu region, Tadiandamol has been a favourite not only amongst the trekkers but also with nature lovers, bird watchers and photo enthusiasts. The mountains have withstood the testimony of time and have inspired many since time immemorial. The erstwhile rulers of the Kodagu region have drawn serious inspiration from the mighty mountain. Trails of their legacy have been left behind at the Nalknad Palace which is close to 200-year old now. Tadiandamol has a rich diversity in its flora and fauna harmoniously co-existing amidst the dense forests and grasslands of the Western ghats.Tadiandamol Peak is the third-highest point in the region of Karnataka offering a magnificent view of the valley after crossing the meadows, water bodies, Shola forest and lush green vegetation. This peak stands at a height of 5,735 feet above sea level and is a favourite spot for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. The mountain has stood testimony to the time and has witnessed several incidents both natural and man-made. Though scaling one of the tallest mountains in Karnataka is not the only adventure but it offers a great view of the surroundings and is one of the famous places to visit in Coorg.Trekking along Tadiandamol teaches one to be valiant and patient while one observes the bounty of mother nature. As one starts from the base village of Kakkabe, the snaking trails are at times broad and of concrete and at times just muddy and unpaved. The excitement begins when the trail gets a little narrower with the sight of dense vegetation, coffee, pepper and other spice plantations. You will be able to witness and enjoy the sight of colourful birds and butterflies and hear them. Trek Routes to Tadiandamol Peak The highest peak in Kodagu offers a fascinating trek to nature lovers. At an elevation of 5740 ft, it takes you through verdant greens of Shola forest, valleys and rivers. The starting point of the trek is at Nalaknad Palace, where large vehicles like buses and tempo travelers can be parked free of cost. There is a motorable road until the viewpoint which is another 2km ahead. Only small vehicles can access this motorable road. The trek to the peak starts from the Forest entry point, where one needs to buy tickets for the trek. The next major point is the big boulder where trekkers usually take a short break to witness a charming view of the surroundings. Beyond the big boulders are the grasslands leading to the silent forest. The pinnacle of the trek is the brilliant forest replete with flora and fauna of varied species. This is a moderate level trek which is 6km one way and takes close to 2-3 hours each side. The trails are broad and chances of getting lost are less.History of Tadiandamol PeakThe third highest mountain peak in Karnataka is extremely popular amongst the tourists. It is adorned with lush Shola forest throughout the valley. The Nalaknad Palace built-in 1792 in the periphery of the mountain has historical relevance. It was used as a site to seek refuge by different rulers during the times of war amongst the neighboring states. For the warrior clans also referred to as the Kodavas the highest peak in Coorg has been a source of inspiration. The stoic warriors were led by the mighty mountain to showcase their valour and strength which has been recorded in the pages of Indian history.

It is the 6th highest peak in Karnataka which offers one of the most enthralling trails in India at the backdrop of the Western Ghats. The Kumara Parvatha hill stretches for a whopping 13 Km and stands at an elevation of 4000 feet above the sea level. Kumara Parvatha is a group of three peaks namely- Shesha Parvatha, Siddha Parvatha and Kumara Parvatha each of which has its relevance to Hindu mythology. Kumara Parvatha is located in the Subramanya village of Sullia Taluk in South Karnataka and is the choicest destination for trekkers and nature lovers. The trekking trail runs dense through the Shola forest which is home to breath-taking flora and fauna under the canopy of clear blue sky. At some places, the trail is quite strenuous with volcanic rocks, gushing streams and rocky crevices that pose a serious challenge to adrenaline junkies. But nevertheless, the panoramic view of the Western Ghats at the distance makes it a rewarding journey for tourists who are ready to go the extra mile for seeing the wonders of nature from close proximity. Kumara Parvatha trek is also popular among the tourists who wish to visit the place as a distinguished pilgrim site of South India. Some of the religious places of interest in and around Kumara Parvatha are Kukke Subramanya Temple, Sringeri Mutt and Biladwara Cave that have significant religious connotations.Apart from that, there are scenic spots en route Kumara Parvatha where you can halt for overnight camping or rest for a while and sink into the overwhelming serenity of the vast expanse of Madikeri. The Malli Waterfalls, Abbimatta Waterfalls and Pushpagiri Forest Reserve are some of the popular natural attractions that make your rigorous trek all worth it.Trek Routes to Kumara ParvathaThere are two routes accessed by trekkers of Kumara Parvatha depending on their level of fitness and spirit of adventure. One route is from Kukke Subramanya temple which is a moderately difficult climb up to the Shesha Parvatha via Kallu Mandapa. From Shesha Parvatha there are ascends and descends through boulders and grasslands up to the summit. This is a longer route and in between, you will need to stay overnight at the Bhatt's House before starting for the rest of your journey on day 2.A comparatively longer route is from Beedhalli in Somwarpet. This route is slightly challenging even for experienced trekkers but the view you witness along your trek is worth your exhaustion and time. In this route, you will trek along dense Shola forest where you may come across the wild animals and birds and feast your eyes on the beautiful panorama at a distance. Trekkers usually take the Somwarpet route to climb up to the summit of the Kumara Parvath and the Kukke Subramanya route to descend.History of Kumara Parvatha There are a number of folklores that go round this pristine religious and scenic destination of Karnataka and each of them ushers immense curiosity among the believers to undertake an arduous journey up to the summit. According to the popular faith, Lord Kumaraswamy (Subramanya) killed demons like Padmasura and Tarakasura and was crowned as the king atop the Kumara Parvatha. The Lord washed his lethal weapon in the nearby river and hence the name Dharma Teertha. Indra, the king of the gods being pleased by the valour of Kumaraswamy asked for his hand in marriage with his daughter Devasena. The marriage between Lord Kumaraswamy and Devasena took place on the bank of Kumaradhara.Another story depicts Vasuki, the divine serpent was once threatened by Garuda (mount of Lord Vishnu/Venkateshwara). In order to save himself from the clutches of Garuda, Vasuki performed rigorous worship in the caves of Kukke Subramanya temple. Lord Shiva being pleased with his follower's devotion sent his son Karthikeyan (Murugan) to protect Vasuki from Garuda. It is believed that Karthikeyan visited Kumara Parvatha where Vasuki was worshipping and blessed him assuring his protection from all evils.

Madikeri Fort

Madikeri Fort has been a popular tourist attraction to witness the lives, rise and fall of several glorious rulers and dynasty. Founded by Mudduraja in the second half of the 17th century and constructed in mud, it finally took shape in granite and has stood testimony to several incidents. It is a coming together of several religions and an amalgamation of different cultures and traditions.A Fort with a temple, Church, prison, Museum and library is pretty intriguing, especially to history lovers. Different rulers from majestic dynasties have constructed and reconstructed the Fort time and again and used it in a way they felt was justified. Located amidst rolling mountains and lush greenery, one can spend hours inside the Fort looking for artefacts mentioned in the pages of history.Currently, the Madikeri Deputy Commissioner's Office is located inside the Fort premises. St. Mark’s Church built during the British regime houses a museum, which contains several interesting items related to history. It showcases a huge portrait of Coorg's eminent personality Field Marshal K. M. Cariappa, weapons and tools used by the different rulers and the British along with several other interesting objects. It is one of the best places to visit in Coorg and the beauty and culture of Coorg have been defined in a historical monument, The Madikeri Fort. The two-storied heritage property built by the erstwhile ruler of Kodagu has undergone several changes both structurally and functionally. A Fort built-in mud housing a beautiful Palace, that too made in mud to a Church adorned with stained glass and done up in Gothic style built by the British.Tipu Sultan further fortified the monument in granite and used it for official and leisurely activities. While the British made a museum adjoining the Church, made further changes and showcased various objects and artefacts used during the different transactions amongst the rulers.Book & Checkout - Coorg Tour PackagesHistory of Madikeri Fort The history of Madikeri Fort dates back to the 17th century when the erstwhile king of Coorg, Mudduraja had made Madikeri the capital city of Kodagu. Initially, the fort was built with mud with along with a palace too made with mud inside the fort premises. The fort has born the brunt of several rulers thus undergoing demolitions and reconstruction time and again over a few centuries. It was also rebuilt by Tipusultan in granite and named the site as Jaffarabad and renamed the fort as Meraca Fort. In 1790 Dodda Vira Rajendra added to the architectural beauty of the Fort and then again by the Britishers in 1834. St. Mark’s Church built in 1859 is housed inside the Fort and has a museum built inhouse. The Architecture of Madikeri FortThe colossal Fort built against the backdrop of verdant mountains and an open sky reminisces one of an era bygone. The Fort, constructed in granite has been built in European style with elaborate pillars and checkered floor patterns. The two life-size statues of elephants at the entrance must have stod testimony to several rivalry and wars.St. Mark’s Church, in glass stained Gothic style replaced the old Vidarbha temple inside the fort also under the British rule. A grand clock tower was strategically placed to the exuberance of the fort in 1933. A sculpture of tortoise, with the name of King Vijayendra, engraved on it sits adorned upon to welcome the history aficionados. The grand architecture of the fort is not only the pride of the Kodagu region but has also attracted visitors from several parts of the world. The secret labyrinth of alleys and passes inside the fort gives way to mysterious stories associated with them which too must have seen gory and secret stories hidden within the walls.

The first place to stop during your Bangalore to Coorg road trip is Ramanagara. It is located around 47 km away from Bangalore, and the drive would take approximately 1 hour and 12 minutes via highway or NICE Road. As one of the leading towns of South India, it is often referred to as Silk Town or Silk City because of the predominance of sericulture in this region.

Ramanagara is mostly popular for its Mysore Silk. In fact, Ramanagara is known for housing the largest market of silk cocoons in India. While you take a stop here, make sure to enjoy a delicious breakfast of warm ghee podi idlis. Several hotels will also serve the classic thatte idlis, bamboo idlis and ghee masala dosas. If you have a bit of extra time, you might prefer to visit the Magadi Ranganatha temple. Once you’ve explored the local beauty of Ramanagara, you should refuel your car and continue your journey towards Coorg.

If you are looking for a fun-filled spot on your Bangalore to Coorg road trip, Mandya can be your go-to.

The next place you should halt during the Bangalore to Coorg road trip is Mandya, around 50 Km away from Ramanagara. Located around 100 kms from Bangalore, Mandya is mostly popular for the presence of sugar factories. As sugarcane is the main crop grown in this region, Mandya is also often called the ‘Sugar City of India’. Earlier, as per the history, Mandya was known as Vedaranya. The place holds rich historical importance as it is said that a great sage once taught in Mandya and had installed an idol of Lord Janardana. The sage practising penance was also teaching one of the wild beasts how to pronounce the word VEDA, which is why it came to be known as Vedaranya.

While you halt at Mandya to refresh, do not forget to indulge in the famous Ragi Mudde, apart from the chilling sugarcanes. By now, your car or bike may have lost some fuel. There is a high chance that you may not get any big petrol pumps nearby, so you would prefer to refuel your vehicle in Mandya once before continuing your journey to Coorg.

Fact: Mandya has four major rivers of South India passing through it- Kaveri, Shimsha, Hemavati and Lokapavani.

Mysore is yet another exciting stop on your Bangalore to Coorg road trip

One of the best stops you should take a halt at is Mysore during the Bangalore to Coorg road trip. One of the leading southwestern Indian states, Mysore, was the Capital of the Kingdom of Mysore from 1339 to 1947. The central palace, or Mysore Palace, is said to be the seat of the former ruler Wodeyar dynasty. Mysore Palace is known to promote Hindu, Gothic, Islamic and Rajput styles of architecture. While your vehicle is being refuelled or you wish to try some delicacies from Mysore, you can take a walk around the age-old beauty of Devaraja Market. And if you love souvenirs, do not forget to carry some from Mysore. Apart from their spices and silk, the sandalwood from Mysore is extremely popular.

Some of the major delicacies you can try in Mysore include Chitranna, Bisi Bele Bath, Maddur Vada, Mysore Masala Dosa, Mysore Pak and Kosambari. Once you have refreshed and refuelled your car, make sure to move towards the next destination. The next destination is going to be at a slight distance. So, it is advisable to prepare for the trip accordingly.

Fact: Try visiting Mysore during Dussehra to explore the beautiful lighting of the palace.

4. Periyapatna

Your Bangalore to Coorg road trip also offers picturesque views of Periyapatna along your journey

The next destination to take a stop during the Bangalore to Mysore road trip is Piriyapatna. This small town is extremely popular for being the largest producer of tobacco. While enjoying the local South Indian delicacies, do not forget to look around a bit. The town isn’t that big and has basic amenities for the residents to pass by. Once you have refuelled the vehicle, you can visit some of the top attractions of Periyapatna before continuing your journey. The town is mostly popular for its temples. Therefore, it is advisable to visit the frequently visited temples by villagers, such as Masanikamma and Kannambadi temples.

Periyapatna is located very close to Kushalnagar, which probably should be your next stop. The town doesn’t have much to offer, so just have your food, refuel the car and move towards one gem of a place, Kushalnagar.

Fact: Due to the high production of tobacco, Periyapatna is often referred to as the land of tobacco.

5. Kushalnagar

The panoramic views of Kushalnagar.

As you’re about to reach Coorg, the last and final stop on your Bangalore to Coorg road trip has to be Kushalnagar. This city in South India is known mostly for its Tibetan settlements and the Golden Temple or the Buddhist Namdroling Monastery. On each side, Kushalnagar is surrounded by some beauty or the other. Towards the west of Kushalnagar, you will experience the beauty of the peaceful Chiklinole Reservoir and Dam. The dam is protected by forests. Since you’re almost on the last leg of your journey and Coorg is just 50 km, probably one and a half hours away, take a break at Kushalnagar and try visiting the Dubare Elephant Camp.

At Kushalnagar, you will get a break from the food you were eating all along, too. For example, you’ll get to experience the beauty of Tibetan foods like momos, thukpas and so much more. Before starting the final leg of your Bangalore to Coorg road trip, fill the vehicle here, explore some of the surrounding destinations, and then continue towards Coorg.
