The Top River Cruise Lines

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

CroisiEurope Cruises

Viking Longship Idun on the Main River in front of Johannisburg Palace, Aschaffenburg, Germany.

Number of passengers:  52 to 386 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, U.S.

Viking's roughly 60 ships – known as longships – traverse major rivers across Europe, including the Danube , the Rhine, the Douro and more. Other popular routes sail Egypt's Nile River as well as the Mississippi River , and newer expeditions include a series of Great Lakes itineraries.

What to expect: Travelers may be familiar with Viking Ocean Cruises , which operates larger ocean voyages with an emphasis on opulent accommodations and diverse enrichment activities. Viking's river cruises follow a similar road map, with meals, one shore excursion per port and Wi-Fi access (where applicable) included in the base fare. Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, heated bathroom floors, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers thoroughly enjoyed their experience with Viking, praising the well-organized shore excursions, top-notch service and comfortable rooms. Some, however, expressed disappointment with the food on board, and a handful of others encountered issues with the air travel Viking arranged.

Number of passengers: 32 to 158 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Uniworld offers luxurious sailings in historic cities across central Europe, France , Italy , Portugal , India, Egypt, South America, Vietnam and Cambodia.

What to expect: Its 17 ships (with another on the way for 2025) aim to create the feel of a boutique hotel with stylish decor, antique artwork and specialty restaurants. The ships hold an average capacity of 120 cruisers, and the company boasts one of the highest staff-to-guest ratios in the industry: about one crew member for every two travelers.

Stateroom amenities vary by vessel but may include marble bathrooms, Egyptian cotton linens, French balconies, iPod docking stations, Nespresso coffee machines, rainfall showers and more. The line's all-inclusive rates cover meals, alcoholic beverages, select excursions, gratuities, onboard fitness classes and Wi-Fi access, on top of entertainment and enrichment classes. Uniworld prides itself on its top-notch cuisine, which is made with local ingredients sourced from the ports on your itinerary and also includes vegetarian and vegan options.

Uniworld's typical clientele tends to be active travelers in their 50s or 60s who reside in North America, the U.K. and Australia . The river cruise line has select itineraries aimed at families, LGBTQ cruisers and solo travelers.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers offered plenty of praise for Uniworld's voyages, complimenting the stylish accommodations, attentive staff and fascinating excursions. Still, some past cruisers felt the guest rooms were small and the overall experience was not worth the high price point.

American Cruise Lines ship on river during sunset.

Courtesy of American Cruise Lines

Number of passengers: 90 to 180 Sails to:  U.S.

As the name suggests, American Cruise Lines sails exclusively on the rivers and coastlines of the United States. Popular cruises visit destinations along the Mississippi River, on the Hudson River, throughout New England , and lining the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line also tours Alaska , the Southeast coast including Florida , and the Puget Sound between Washington state and the Canadian border.

What to expect: American Cruise Lines operates more than 20 relatively new small ships and river vessels (the average ship is about 4 years old), ranging from modern riverboats to small coastal ships to authentic paddlewheelers. Comfortable cabins can accommodate up to three people per room, and all ships offer single staterooms designed exclusively for solo travelers . Each room boasts picture windows, a spacious bathroom and – in some cases – a private balcony. In the ships' public spaces, cruisers can enjoy daily onboard entertainment like jazz and blues performances, as well as presentations by historians and area experts.

The line promises an all-American experience. As such, you can expect to find American staff aboard the American-built ships as well as food that pays homage to the destinations you will visit, from New Orleans -style andouille sausage gumbo to New England-inspired seafood boils. Complimentary cocktails and hors d'oeuvres are served every night prior to dinner; all meals, snacks, and wine and beer are included in the base fare. Shore excursions are not typically included in the rate, though some itineraries offer one complimentary outing per port.

Passengers on American Cruise Lines tend to lean North American and are typically mature retired travelers.

What travelers say: Most recent cruisers enjoyed their experience, highlighting the great shore excursions and friendly staff. However, some flagged issues with cabin cleanliness and noted the ships could use an interior refresh.

AmaWaterways cruise ship on river near town.

Number of passengers:  28 to 196 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Consider a river cruise with AmaWaterways, whether you're looking to sail through the heart of Europe or seeking a once-in-a-lifetime adventure touring destinations like Vietnam, Egypt, South Africa or Colombia. A family-owned business founded in 2002, AmaWaterways operates 29 river cruise boats that welcome 150 passengers on average.

The cruise line aims to provide excursion-rich experiences and offers unique themed sailings for passengers with certain interests. Wine-themed voyages are perfect for oenophiles wishing to explore some of Europe's most popular wine regions, while a concierge golf program will transport passengers from one famous golf course to the next. Or, opt for a holiday river cruise to visit magical Christmas markets around Europe. In 2025, AmaWaterways will offer four Soulful Experiences Black history-themed itineraries.

What to expect: On board, guests can expect cabins suitable for couples or single travelers, as well as a set amount of connectible rooms designed for multigenerational families. Staterooms are spacious, with perks like bathrobes, slippers and plush bedding. Cabins can feature up to two balconies with AmaWaterways' twin balcony design, which allows for a full, step-out balcony alongside a French balcony with sliding glass doors. In-room Wi-Fi is complimentary, and guests will have access to movies and music on demand.

Outside of their cabins, passengers can enjoy amenities spanning small pools, sun decks, fitness equipment, a hair salon, massage services and more.

AmaWaterways primarily attracts North American travelers in their 50s who enjoy taking part in active shore excursions that involve walking or cycling. Passengers from the U.K. and Australia sail on this river cruise line as well. You can expect to find a mix of couples, families and solo cruisers – including a growing number of millennial travelers – on your vessel, thanks to AmaWaterways' diverse cabin offerings. Adventures by Disney charters AmaWaterways ships for select sailings each year as well.

What travelers say: Most recent travelers enjoyed their overall experience, praising the scenic destinations and nicely appointed cabins. However, some were disappointed in the food and felt the journey was overpriced.

Number of passengers:  16 to 166 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa, South America

Avalon Waterways sails 18 riverboats along popular thoroughfares like the Danube, the Rhone, the Seine, the Nile, the Rhine, the Moselle, the Mekong and more.

What to expect: Launched in 2004, Avalon stands out for its spacious vessels – known as Suite Ships – which feature some of the largest rooms in the river cruise industry and beds that face wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows, providing panoramic views. Additional stateroom perks include complimentary breakfast in bed, L'Occitane toiletries, sitting areas, ample storage space and mattress toppers.

Across the ship, passengers can enjoy amenities like a sun deck with lounge chairs, whirlpools and a game area, in addition to numerous restaurants and bars and a 24-hour self-serve coffee station. You will also have your pick of Classic, Active or Discovery shore excursions – ranging from standard tours with a local guide to hiking outings along a hilltop castle – depending on your interests and physical abilities.

Avalon Waterways attracts English-speaking cruisers from a variety of countries, typically in their 50s and 60s. However, children ages 8 and older are welcome on board (though there are no designated kids clubs), and some voyages draw younger or older passengers.

What travelers say: Most recent reviews are positive, with travelers highlighting the friendly, knowledgeable staff and tasty food.

Number of passengers: 84 to 130 Sails to:  Europe

Travel company Tauck wears multiple hats: It operates small-ship voyages around the world, land tours across seven continents, small group journeys for an average of 24 travelers at a time, family tours and – finally – European river cruises. Take your pick from nine river vessels to explore popular waterways like the Douro, the Moselle, the Rhine, the Danube and the Rhone.

What to expect: All-inclusive fares cover shore excursions, onboard activities and entertainment, gratuities, beverages and more. Plus, Tauck offers exclusive access to unforgettable experiences like wine tastings at private vineyards and gala dinners in historic castles.

More than 80% of Tauck's staterooms feature French balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing for excellent views. Other in-room amenities may include adjustable climate controls, satin linens, pillow-top mattresses, terry cloth robes and more. Outside of your cabin, you'll find perks such as a sun deck, a putting green, enrichment programs like cooking demonstrations, a fitness center and complimentary bikes for onshore exploring.

Tauck caters to affluent, English-speaking cruisers – primarily Americans in their 50s and older – though you may also find families with adult children on board. The line appeals most to travelers who prefer all the details of their trip to be taken care of for them, versus those who like to plan activities independent of the cruise line.

What travelers say: Recent passengers generally speak highly of their Tauck river cruise experiences, pointing to the exceptional level of organization and spacious, luxurious accommodations. Others said they were underwhelmed for the price.

Aerial of Emerald Cruises river cruise ship on river in Urbar, Germany.

Number of passengers: 84 to 180 Sails to:  Europe, Asia

Previously known as Emerald Waterways, Emerald Cruises transports travelers across some of the most popular rivers in Europe and Asia, including the Danube, the Rhine, the Douro and the Mekong.

What to expect: The cruise fare covers all meals, beverages with lunch and dinner, daily shore excursions – which may include more physically rigorous options called EmeraldACTIVE – Wi-Fi access and gratuities.

Emerald operates nine river vessels, all of which boast luxurious public spaces and accommodations with en suite bathrooms and flat-screen TVs. Common-area amenities span heated indoor pools, sun decks, spa and wellness facilities, and a variety of eateries. Onboard fitness classes are available, as are other forms of entertainment. On shore, cruisers can borrow bicycles to explore historic city centers.

Typical clientele aboard Emerald Cruises' voyages includes American and British passengers around retirement age, though some younger travelers may make an appearance as well. Children 12 and older are permitted on board and on tours, but there are no kids clubs or designated activities for younger cruisers. Special rooms and dinner reservations are available for solo travelers.

What travelers say: Cruisers on recent sailings – especially first-time sailors – enjoyed their experiences on Emerald Cruises. High points included the attentive crew members and the stress-free booking and planning process. However, some felt that customer service and communication were subpar.

Number of passengers:  68 to 163 Sails to: Europe, Asia

From the Danube to the Mekong, Australian travel company Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours offers lavish, all-inclusive river sailings with an emphasis on customization. The more upscale sister brand of Emerald Cruises, Scenic affords travelers the opportunity to do as much or as little as they want while on board and ashore.

What to expect: Enrichment activities are hand-picked by the line's "Journey Designers," and vessels provide a top-notch level of service thanks to their high crew-to-passenger ratios. In fact, each passenger receives a designated butler who can complete nightly turndowns and make laundry arrangements, among other tasks.

Spacious suites on board are larger than those on most other riverboats (ranging from 161 to 517 square feet). High-tech balcony controls allow lodgers to let in as much air as they'd like with the touch of a button. Cruisers will also enjoy special in-room touches like pillow menus, slippers and robes.

When it comes to dining, Scenic sources local ingredients and culinary inspiration from the ports visited on the itinerary to provide an authentic experience. All meals are included in the base cruise fare, along with beverages, gratuities, Wi-Fi access, shore excursions and electric bicycle usage in select destinations.

What travelers say: Recent cruisers were pleased with their experiences aboard Scenic's vessels, praising the spacious cabins, pampering butler service, and knowledgeable crew members and tour guides. However, some travelers were particularly disappointed with the food.

Side view of CroisiEurope Cruises river cruise ship.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 16 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers felt some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment, and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired. Still, others maintain that the experience was superb and highlighted the reasonable prices.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size:  River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate,   with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere:  The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment:  River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions:  Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine:  Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price:  River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered some of the most luxurious:

The 10 Best River Cruise Lines

River cruises offer an enchanting and immersive way to travel, presenting a blend of luxury, comfort, and cultural exploration that is unmatched by other forms of tourism.

Unlike the vast oceans navigated by larger cruise ships, rivers flow through the heart of cities, towns, and countrysides, offering passengers an intimate view of the world’s most picturesque landscapes and historical sites.

These cruises are not just journeys across water; they are passages through time and culture, where each bend in the river reveals a new vista or a forgotten story from history. When selecting a river cruise, it’s important to consider the included amenities and destinations. Prices often do not include airfare, taxes, and other fees, so it’s advisable to check for hidden costs.

Booking well in advance is recommended, as river cruises are often planned early, though last-minute deals may be available. Travel insurance is also a wise investment for such trips.

9 best river cruises in Europe

Fran Golden

River cruising in Europe is one of those delightfully slow and easy modes of travel. You're in a small floating hotel, gliding past castles, vineyards and scenery that changes by the hour as you explore calm inland waters.

Daily guided walking tours and other excursions provided by the river line take you to key UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other city and village attractions you've come to see. Or, you can choose to explore on your own, which is easy since your ship often will dock right in town.

Lazy afternoons on the ship afford the time to sit in a lounge chair and watch the world go by — kids swimming from the riverbanks, farmers tending their crops, river birds flapping their wings — as you glide to your next destination.

Which European river should you explore? The choices are broader than you might expect.

The main rivers in Europe are the Danube and the Rhine and their tributaries. They are, by far, the most popular, doable either on one-week segments or longer itineraries that combine areas and sometimes combine rivers. Even if your cruise is only a week, don't underestimate the allure of relaxing for seven days on a river in France or on the dreamy Douro in Portugal.

Here are the best river cruises in Europe.

Upper Danube

river cruise liners

When it comes to Europe river cruises, the Upper Danube is a perfect seven-night starter sailing. It takes you through centuries of history as you explore Germany, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary.

Ships visit such cultural hubs as Vienna, with its opera house, art museums and elaborate royal palaces, and Budapest, Hungary, with its magnificent architecture and modern vibe. If your ship passes the Hungarian Parliament Building at night, you're in for a treat; magnificently lit, it's one of the most photographed sights on the river.

Along the route between Melk and Krems in Austria, you cruise through the Wachau Valley, a key wine-growing region producing rieslings and gruner veltliners, with sipping opportunities available. It's also a great place to bike, which is why it's nice to sail with lines such as AmaWaterways that carry bikes on board for passengers to use.

You might also have the option of a side trip to Salzburg, Austria, the birthplace of Mozart — and also where several scenes for the movie "The Sound of Music" were filmed. A surprise for many is Old Town Bratislava, Slovakia, which might not have been on your must-do list but charms with its beer culture and castles.

Lower Danube

river cruise liners

For a deep dive into Eastern Europe's past and present, the fascinating Lower Danube route between Budapest and Bucharest, Romania, explores history from the medieval times and Victorian era of Dracula to the rise of communism and the Bosnian War.

The seven-night river cruise takes you through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. The most beautiful stretch of the river is a 62-mile passage through a gorge between the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains. It's also one of the deepest stretches of river in the world.

Other sights accessed during shore excursions via bus include Bulgaria's Belogradchik Rocks, which are naturally carved towering red rock pinnacles that appear to take forms such as "Madonna with child," and Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria's stunning medieval capital.

When it comes to top cruising rivers in Europe, the Rhine wins for natural beauty and fairy-tale landscapes. A cruise on the river between Amsterdam and Basel, Switzerland — a typical one-week route — takes you past expanses of slope-side vineyards, forests and mountains; historic cities; and medieval half-timbered villages.

That's even before you get to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 40-mile stretch of river, between Rudesheim am Rhein and Koblenz, Germany, has castles galore — you might imagine Rapunzel letting down her hair — and Lorelei, the legendary slate rock said to distract sailors with the mesmerizing song of a maiden.

The French city of Strasbourg, with its famous Gothic cathedral and robust Alsatian culinary scene, is often a favorite stop on Rhine itineraries. Other highlights include Heidelberg, Germany, and its imposing castle.

Sure, you can catch sight of the Eiffel Tower when boarding a river ship in Paris, but you can do that while staying in a hotel, too. The real highlights of a Seine cruise are sailing on the river outside the city toward the English Channel and a visit to the beaches in Normandy, France, for a perspective on World War II.

Your visit there and to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, as well as other memorials and monuments to the fallen, is a poignant experience (one that requires a two-hour bus ride from your ship, however). Avalon Waterways brings a World War II expert on board to add insight on select sailings.

Other treasures exist along the Seine, not the least of which is Giverny, France, the home and gardens of impressionist artist Claude Monet. If you are a fan of his art, much of the property might seem familiar.

In historic Rouen, France, where Joan of Arc was martyred in the Middle Ages, stop by Rouen Cathedral (another subject of Monet) before losing yourself on cobblestone streets with wonderful cafes.

Bordeaux river cruises are different from other water routes because you explore two short waterways — the Dordogne and Garonne rivers — and the Gironde estuary in southwest France.

You'll spend more time ashore than floating down the river on this itinerary, with your ship docked for two nights in the city of Bordeaux, France, a miniature Paris with grand 18th-century buildings. Who cares when you are in the epicenter of French culture in one of the most celebrated wine regions in the world?

Bordeaux serves up the opportunity to sip Medoc, Margaux, Saint Emilion, Pomerol and Sauternes wines as you expand your wine education. You'll visit vineyards and gorgeous chateaus. Your cruise line might even host a dinner at a wine estate one evening. If you plan your cruise for September or October, you'll be able to admire the grape harvest.

Rhone and Saone

river cruise liners

Another must for wine lovers is exploring the interior of France, sipping Cotes du Rhone in famous wine-making regions such as Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence and Beaune in Burgundy.

Rhone and Saone river cruises typically sail between Lyon and Arles or Avignon, and they're top-loaded with such nonwine attractions as the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard and the Roman Arles Amphitheater, as well as the massive Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) in Avignon. You'll also be able to take in the lavender fields, haystacks and other scenes that inspired painters like Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh.

For a lazy, dreamy, wonderful river cruise experience, nothing quite beats exploring the wine regions of Portugal on the Douro, one of the major rivers through the Iberian Peninsula. The home base for these river cruises is Porto, Portugal, with its historic city center, spectacular bridges and port houses.

On one-week cruises, you'll follow the river 130 miles past green hillside vineyards in the Douro River Valley, a UNESCO-recognized destination, before turning around at the Spanish border. The river cruises typically include a visit to the university town of Salamanca in northern Spain. Viticulture is very much the lesson en route, as you learn about port production on the "River of Gold."

Due to fluctuating water levels and narrow passages, the Elbe is a challenging river that runs 680 miles between the Czech Republic and Germany. Historically, it formed part of the border between East Germany and West Germany.

River cruising here is a rare experience. Viking is one of the few lines that visits (another is the French line CroisiEurope), offering 10-day itineraries that combine hotel stays in the cities of Berlin and Prague with a stretch of river between Prague and Wittenburg, Germany.

The cruises are on ships built specifically for the Elbe route. They stop in places such as resurgent Dresden, heavily bombed during World War II but expertly rebuilt; the Saxon Switzerland region of Germany with its striking sandstone rock formations; and the spa town of Bad Schandau.

The CruiseMapper's "River Cruise Tracker" offers information on river cruising vacations via two free of charge services. Our cruise tracker provides detailed itinerary and prices information by riverboat. Our live AIS ship tracking service provides you with real-time positions of ships sailing on rivers in Europe, USA, and Russia .

Our river ship database is constantly growing. We add new destinations, lines/companies, and new boats on a regular basis. Each riverboat has its own page showing its current-year itinerary program plus all scheduled itineraries for the next year. These are all departures officially announced by the cruise shipping line (often also a shipowner). Our cruise schedules additionally show the cheapest prices Per Person (double occupancy rates) on the boat's lowest cabin grade available for booking. This is a unique opportunity for comparison of both itineraries and prices on a single webpage. This allows you to choose departure dates, itinerary ports (visited ports, cities, and towns, usually with land tours included) and the rates.

River Cruise Travel

River cruises are a great and relatively inexpensive way to travel to some of the most historic cities in the world. The itineraries offer scenic voyages along major rivers and inland waterways in Europe, Asia, North and South Africa, South America's Amazon, Australia, USA, and Canada. In all visited ports, there are many sightseeing scheduled activities. Often between ports, there are land tours and bus travel excursions ranging from major cities to small towns and villages.

River Cruises - CruiseMapper

The greatest challenge about planning a river cruise travel vacation is to identify the proper itinerary. Most of the itineraries are operated with one-week deals, but more exotic voyages can stretch up to two weeks. Grand Danube cruises in Europe connect Holland to the Black Sea, and last three weeks. All river cruise itineraries usually start from a beautiful "big and famous" city with a location on the river. This type of travel deals are usually inclusive of most of the scheduled land tours (which are guided) and pre- and/or post-cruise hotel stays. In most destinations (especially in Europe), the river cruising season runs from April through October. Depending on the itinerary, some European and USA itineraries could be Christmas Markets-themed voyages (in December).

While most of the organized shore excursions are price included, some companies additionally offer optional extra-fee tours, hotel packages and cheap flights from UK or USA. Travel cruising on rivers offers an intimate experience which allows exploring all the places part of the itinerary.

Riverboats as sizes are smaller than sea and ocean ships, allowing them to navigate the river's shallow waters and tighter beds. This means that these passenger ships offer far fewer entertainment options, enrichment programming (mostly lectures by local experts) and amenities. In comparison to sea-going passenger shipping vessels, the river cruise accommodations tend to be smaller.

Balcony staterooms are usually rare. Cabin bathrooms are more functional and less "spa". However, the offers on new river cruise ships are "more luxury" and more sophisticated, with larger cabins and a variety of spacious suites. This type of travel vacation is often advertised as great "value for money" deals. In general, from the passenger point of view, river cruising demands a greater value, with higher expectations of service and quality at inexpensive to really affordable prices.

Safety issues

River cruises are generally dependent on water levels and river locks functioning. Due to unpredictable water levels (both high and low) or delays during lock and bridge passages, sometimes the ship changes its scheduled itinerary and travel procedures. In extreme cases, when the planned river route is impassable, the cruise shipping company organizes alternative routes or means of transportation. In such cases, certain cruise ports/destinations along the pre-scheduled itinerary are replaced or not visited.

Occasionally, on itineraries with border crossing may occur delays due to regulatory formalities. On smaller rivers (like Main, and Neckar) are crossed some very low bridges. During the crossing, the ship's crew takes appropriate precautions by dismantling most Sun Deck structures (railings, windscreen) and hydraulically sinking the Wheelhouse to ensure safe passage. During the bridge crossing, the sundeck area is temporarily closed/blocked to both passengers and crew.

Excepting large riverboats with Infirmary (resident doctor), most river cruise ships have only a small first aid kit for cases of medical emergencies. If medical care is required, the ship contacts a general practitioner or clinic. Purchasing foreign health insurance is recommended, as well as prescribed medicines to be taken on the ship in adequate quantities.

On most river cruise boats, the Internet costs extra and is provided via satellite. Connections and speeds could be limited, depending on the destination and vessel's current position. Large files, audio-video streaming, and voice-video chat can't be transferred.

Pets are not allowed on river ships.

River cruising market

River cruising is the travel industry's fastest-growing sector. It is also a changing one since the market gets increasingly wider as vacation experiences (new ships, new amenities, themed cruises, popular itineraries). Statistics show that in 2014, around 139,500 travelers from UK book a river cruise, which was a 6% rise on 2013's UK bookings.

In 2016, a total of 23 new river ships are scheduled for launch. Most of the new riverboats are equipped with a gym, spa and even a top-deck swimming pool. Many offer complimentary bikes for shore exploration and also on guided tours. In the last years, the typical age group was also changed. River cruise companies like Emerald and Scenic report about an increased number of bookings made by holiday travelers in their 40s.

According to CLIA's official reports, there is gaining popularity of the family river cruising vacations. It means that the new generation riverboats (and the river ship travel in general) are attracting younger and more active passengers. To meet the new demand, some of the world's largest lines (such as Uniworld) increase the number of their multi-generational themed itineraries, offering such sailings also in the summer and during the winter school holidays. A-ROSA Flusskreuzfahrten's deals offer free travel for kids under 15. In 2015, Walt Disney started a partnership with AmaWaterways for family-themed Danube cruises on the ship AmaViola.

Contributing to the family river cruising popularity are the boats' new designs, including cabin configurations, connecting staterooms and larger suite accommodations for families. Many land tour activities are also family orientated, featuring cycling, history-themed games, cooking lessons, scavenger hunts.

CLIA's 2016 report said the European river cruising market grew 2.7% over 2015, with over 1,36 million booked passengers. Among those, the majority were North Americans (38,7%) followed by Germans (28,4%).

USA River Cruises

Among the most booked US river cruise deals are the following itineraries:

  • Columbia and Snake Rivers (between Portland Oregon and Clarkston WA )
  • Lower Mississippi River (between New Orleans and Memphis TN )
  • Mississippi River (between New Orleans and St Louis Missouri )
  • Upper Mississippi River (between St Louis and Minneapolis-Saint Paul )
  • Great Lakes cruises (between Chicago and Toronto)
  • French Canada and Great Lakes (between Montreal and Detroit MI )
  • French Canada and St Lawrence Seaway (between Halifax and Detroit)

USA river travel experiences include unspoiled and glorious riverside scenery, popular outdoor activities (biking, hiking, kayaking), visiting famous wineries, themed food (locally sourced cuisine and nightly wine tastings on the ship), winery tours and wine tasting (ashore).

Snake and Columbia River Cruises in the USA

Columbia and Snake river cruises are among the best options for vacation travel in Northwest USA. The route includes ports in Oregon and Washington states. Itineraries are tailored to maximize daytime cruising travel for optimal viewing of iconic highlights, such as Columbia River Gorge, local museums, forts, wineries. Cruisetour deals on major companies are inclusive of all shore excursions, offered in each port along the route.

Columbia River cruises are operated with either roundtrip from Portland Oregon or one-way (eastbound/westbound) itineraries between Portland and Clarkston WA. These voyages offer nearly 1600 km (1000 mi) of river travel. The best companies serving the routes are American Cruise Lines and UnCruise Adventures . Their fleets include newbuild riverboat replicas, all-American staff, and crew (dressed in period clothes and uniforms), first-class onboard enrichment programs (with expert historians, guest lecturers, media presentations).

Generally navigated with big-sized ships (including paddlewheel riverboats), Columbia is the largest river in the USA's Pacific Northwest. It starts in the Rocky Mountains (BC Canada), flows northwest, then south into Washington (USA), then turns west and forms most of the Oregon-Washington borderline, and finally flows into the Pacific Ocean. Columbia River's length is 2000 km (1240 mi), and its largest tributary (Snake River) has length 1735 km / 1080 mi.

The following map shows all Snake and Columbia river cruise ports along the itinerary from Portland to Clarkston.

Mississippi River cruises in the USA

Mississippi River runs entirely within the USA, its source is Lake Itasca (northern Minnesota) and flows south for approx 3730 km (2320 mi) to the Mississippi Delta (Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea). Mississippi is ranked the world's 4th-longest and 15th-largest (by discharge). Mississippi either borders or passes through the US states Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana.

River's embayment is one of the USA's most fertile agricultural regions. Before the early 20th century, Mississippi was also the most important waterway serving both passenger travel and cargo trade.

Best deals with several big-capacity boats (paddle wheelers) are offered by American Cruise Lines. Itineraries are grouped as Upper Mississippi (between St Louis Missouri and Saint Paul Minnesota), Middle Mississippi, and Lower Mississippi (between Memphis TN and NOLA-New Orleans). Music-, history-, food, and wine-themed voyages are also available for booking seasonally.

In addition to Mississippi, voyages on its tributaries (the rivers Ohio, Tennessee, Cumberland) are also operated.

  • The 8-day "Cumberland River Cruise" (Nashville to St Louis) visits Lake Barkley (Kentucky), Clarksville (Tennessee), Dover (Tennessee), Paducah (Kentucky), Cape Girardeau (Missouri), Chester (Illinois) and ends in St Louis (Missouri).
  • The 11-day "Ohio River Cruise" (St Louis to Pittsburgh) visits Cape Girardeau (Missouri), Paducah (Kentucky), Henderson (Kentucky), Louisville (Kentucky), Cincinnati (Ohio), Maysville (Kentucky), Marietta (Ohio) and ends in Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania).

The following map shows all Mississippi river cruise ports along the itinerary from Minneapolis-St Paul to New Orleans.

The route also includes several popular plantation houses in the Southern US.

Itinerary of River Cruises

CruiseMapper's AIS data source is VesselFinder (ship tracker) that shows the current locations of all our vessels. Exceptions are the newest riverboats currently under construction (which don't have their MMSI numbers yet) and riverboats in Asia and South America (which either don't have MMSI or AIS coverage). In both cases, the unknown vessel identification makes ship tracking impossible.

River cruise ship tracker

Ship tracking is based on the AIS technology (Automated Identification System). Cruise ship tracking is possible because the AIS is mandatory equipment for all commercial (and passenger) ships with gross tonnage 300GT and above.

The equipment's low cost (ranging between USD 150-500) helped all the AIS tracking enthusiasts to purchase such a receiving system and install it at home. These systems stream the received data to web-based trackers. Live tracking of riverboats is a necessity for the shipowner. It also provides valuable info about the ship's current location and course, which helps families of the crew and also friends and relatives of the cruise passengers. And frankly speaking - ship tracking is fun!

List of river cruise ships (itineraries, prices, current location tracking)

In the following table, many fleets include newbuild riverboats. The industry's largest fleet belongs to Viking Cruises, having a truly impressive number of "longships". In both 2014 and 2015, Viking set (and surpassed) its own Guinness Record for christening 12 (in 2014) then 16 (in 2015) boats. The record is for most ships christened in a single day (24-hour period, actually). Introduced in 2012, each of the Viking longships has max capacity 190 passengers and features a patented design that allows a greater number of cabins, plus more balcony accommodations.

The biggest river cruise companies (passenger-shipping lines and travel brands) launching new boats almost every year are Viking, Uniworld, Scylla, Avalon, AMA, Scenic.

The Best Mississippi River Cruises Are All About Charming Small Towns, Legendary Music, and Regional Cuisine

The mighty mississippi is one of the longest and most storied waterways in america. cruises on the river offer a unique vantage point from which to experience the history and culture of the country’s heartland..

Many Mississippi River cruises often begin or end in New Orleans—and that’s not a bad thing.

Sometimes, there’s no better way to travel than to explore deeper right in your own backyard. For history buffs, foodies, and music lovers alike, a cruise along the United States’ own Mississippi River offers a bounty of opportunities to experience the rich culture of America’s heartland.

The iconic river is one of the most notorious waterways in the country. It’s famous for several reasons: It’s the dividing line between the eastern and western United States. It introduced the golden age of the steamboat era. It serves as the backdrop of so much American literature and winds through music-history meccas such as New Orleans and Memphis, known as the birthplace of jazz and blues, respectively.

So it should come as little surprise that Mississippi River cruises are by far the best-selling and the most popular river cruises in the United States, according to travel advisers.

While cruising on the Mississippi, travelers will find that old-world Southern charm meets modernity on comfortable, contemporary ships that sail along the river and its tributaries. Guests have their pick of cruising on classic reimagined paddle-wheel riverboats reminiscent of a bygone era that, these days, instead of running on steam power, run on lower-emission diesel fuels. Or, modern riverboats provide all the comforts and convenience of newer vessels, like pools, while offering interior design touches and programming that pay tribute to America’s storied, and sometimes challenging, past.

It’s worth noting that there aren’t a ton of U.S. river cruise lines to choose from when planning a Mississippi River cruise. There had been three major players operating on the Mississippi River, but in February 2024, American Queen Voyages shut down operations due to COVID-19 pandemic–era financial problems that the company said it never fully recovered from, leaving two: American Cruise Lines and Viking .

If you love New Orleans, you’re in luck—numerous Mississippi River cruises include time in the Big Easy as the river runs right alongside the famous Louisiana city.

Even with just two river cruise lines making up the lion’s share of the Mississippi River cruise market, there is a wide variety of itineraries for travelers to choose from for their journey through this historic waterway and its surrounding region.

American Cruise Lines operates five ships on the Mississippi River, which include two paddle wheelers, American Splendor and American Heritage , along with three modern river boats: American Melody , American Symphony , and American Serenade . The company offers eight river cruises on the Mississippi and four cruises that further explore its tributaries on the Ohio, Cumberland, and Tennessee rivers.

Viking is the newest addition to the U.S. river cruise market and the Mississippi River. The company launched its first ship, the 386-guest Viking Mississippi , in late 2022. Currently, Viking offers 10 different itineraries on the Mississippi.

Where do Mississippi River cruises go?

The Mississippi River flows south from its source in northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca through and along 10 states, including Wisconsin, Missouri, and Tennessee, before it empties out at its mouth in Louisiana and into the Gulf of Mexico.

River cruises travel much of the Mississippi’s 2,340-mile stretch, primarily focusing on small towns and cities between New Orleans and Minneapolis–St. Paul, Minnesota. Itineraries are usually divided into two categories: Lower Mississippi cruises, which run between New Orleans and St. Louis, and Upper Mississippi cruises that sail between St. Louis and Minneapolis–St. Paul.

Some Mississippi itineraries also include sailing on the river’s tributaries, such as the Ohio, Cumberland, and Tennessee rivers, where travelers might choose to dive deeper into the Mississippi Delta’s cultural history during visits to places like Paducah, Kentucky, and Nashville, Tennessee.

What kind of excursions are offered?

Mississippi River cruises offer travelers a way to explore the roots of Americana, the things that make up the cultural heritage of the U.S.

These cruises travel through some cultural hubs in the South and Midwest, places where travelers will no doubt find excursions tracing the history of jazz and blues, slavery and racism (a conversation that is often confronted during plantation tours and when visiting civil rights memorials), agriculture and farming, and American art and literature. You can expect to tour some of the largest and most famous cities along the river, such as New Orleans, Memphis, and St. Louis, while discovering the hidden gems and unique achievements of more off-the-beaten-path communities like Hannibal, Missouri, best known as the town where Mark Twain grew up, and Burlington, Iowa, home of the extremely crooked street Snake Alley.

Traditional excursions might include walking tours and scenic drives led by local guides, museum visits, tours of historic buildings and homes, and stops at local parks, landmarks, and neighborhoods that tell the story of the area.

American Cruise Lines and Viking offer at least one included excursion in each port, in addition to excursions that guests can purchase for an additional charge.

When’s the best time to go on a Mississippi River cruise?

Both American Cruise Lines and Viking offer year-round sailings on the Mississippi River, so travelers can hop on one of these itineraries whenever convenient for them.

According to American Cruise Lines, choosing the best time of year for a Mississippi River cruise comes down to personal preference and what kind of weather guests want to experience on their trip. The company said it offers the most sailing dates during late spring and early summer, but it’s added more departures throughout its summer season and into early fall as interest grows.

With Viking, the best season to go on a Mississippi cruise depends on which part of the river you want to spend time on, whether that’s the Upper or Lower sections of the river, or sailing the entire span from New Orleans to St. Paul.

Viking Mississippi’s captain says the company usually operates on the Upper Mississippi from July through September, and Lower Mississippi cruises take place throughout the rest of the year.

How much do Mississippi River cruises cost?

Prices for Mississippi cruises vary depending on trip length, pre- and post-cruise add-ons, airfare, transfers, time of year, single or double occupancy, and any applicable discounts.

An eight-night Upper Mississippi cruise between St. Louis and St. Paul with American Cruise Lines operating on June 13, 2025, for example, starts at $5,635 per person, based on double occupancy. But the price for that same itinerary with a July 4 departure date drops to $5,135.

American Cruise Lines includes all shipboard meals, entertainment, tips and gratuities, alcohol, and other port charges and fees in the price of the cruise. The company also sells domestic airfare with preferential fares on all itineraries and has special offers on select sailings.

Prices for a 15-day cruise with ACL begin at $10,440 for departures in 2025. Its longest itinerary operating on the Mississippi—a 22-night voyage—starts at a discounted rate of $15,140 for departures in May and June 2025 and includes complimentary airfare.

Most Viking cruises range from eight to 15 days, but the company offers some 22-day cruises on the Mississippi as well.

Eight-day cruises with Viking start at $3,499 per person in 2025 and can rise to as much as $6,999 per person during the peak travel season. Two-week cruises in 2025 start at $8,999, while the 22-day cruises range in price from $13,998 to $19,999 per person.

  • September 20, 2024

Geoffrey Chaucer

Riviera River Cruises has announced several new offerings for 2026, including the launch of a new ship, five themed itineraries and a dedicated departure for solo travelers.

According to a press release, the new ship will feature the line’s largest-ever suites and introduce a third restaurant onboard.

Among the new itineraries are cruises along the Rhine as well as food and wine experiences across Europe and music and art-themed voyages on the Danube. A solo traveler departure will also be available in Germany.

[For a complete overview of the market, see the new 2025 European River Market Report by Cruise Industry News .]

In addition, all 2026 European river cruises are now available for booking at a 50 percent discount, valid through November 30, 2024.

“As we launch sales for 2026, we have a lot to offer that’s new, from a spacious ship with a third dining venue to itineraries focused on nature, gardens, gastronomy, music and art, and a cruise through Germany for solo travelers,” said Marilyn Conroy, executive vice president of sales and marketing, North America for Riviera River Cruises. “And through November, all 2026 departures are available for half off. If your clients are considering a European river cruise, now is a great time to book.”

The new Riviera Resplendence will offer a range of amenities and accommodations across four decks. Key features include a new split-level bar and restaurant, a third restaurant, Mosaic, offering tasting menus inspired by Europe’s rivers, and Riviera’s largest-ever suites. Additional amenities include a sun deck with a pool, a bistro with an open kitchen, a fitness center and a spa and wellness area. The ship’s 89 cabins, accommodating 178 passengers, will feature convertible double beds and rain showers. Grand suites will be the largest at 344 square feet, with balconies and seating areas.

New themed 2026 itineraries include:

  • Music & Art of the Blue Danube: This eight-day itinerary, from April through October 2026, starts at $3,199 and includes 12 experiences such as classical music performances, visits to sites connected to Mozart and Wagner and a behind-the-scenes tour with the Vienna Boys Choir.

The eight-day Medieval Germany for Solo Travelers itinerary sails in August 2026, with prices starting at $4,699 per person. Highlights include St. Martin’s Cathedral and the stained glass windows of St. Stephan’s Church in Mainz; Marienberg Fortress and Würzburg’s Baroque palace; Rothenburg’s old town; medieval villages in Miltenberg and Wertheim; the old town of Bamberg; and Nuremberg’s Church of Saint Lawrence and Hauptmarkt.

Last Updated: September 26, 2024

Isn’t it fascinating to sail for miles to explore historic gems, pleasing landscapes, and cultural treasures from the comfort of a floating hotel? A river cruise is the ultimate way to experience this magical voyage. Cruising down a river offers a more intimate and cozy experience than ocean cruises. From the timeless charm of Europe’s rivers to the exotic beauty of Southeast Asia, here’s a list of the 10 best river cruise destinations in the world.

1. The Rhône River, France

A boat on Rhone river in France

The Rhône River cruises venture through some of the most captivating and Pinterest-y landscapes of Europe. It cuts through central Europe, from the Swiss Alps through the heart of France to the Mediterranean Sea. You can choose a beautiful cruise that serves delicious food and departs from France’s gastronomic capital, Lyon. Such cruises cover the vineyards of Burgundy and iconic scenes of Provence. Since you will be cruising through vineyards, sipping on some classic wines is unmissable. Travel to medieval times as the river passes through Arles and Avignon.

Best Time to Cruise: Book during late spring, April to June, and early autumn, September to October, for pleasant weather and fewer tourists.

2. The Amazon River, South America

The Amazon River, flows through Peru, Colombia, and Brazil, flanked by the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Thousands of tributaries flow into the Amazon, creating the world’s largest river. The cruise provides a unique chance to spot wildlife, including pink river dolphins, monkeys, and sloths. On the way, the river ripples through local villages, biodiverse regions, and lush jungle areas.

Best Time to Cruise: Visit during the dry season, from May to September, for easier wildlife viewing.

3. The Danube River, Hungary

The second longest river in Europe, the Danube River, winds through ten countries, including Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Romania. It passes through Central and Southeastern Europe and streams from the Black Forest into the Black Sea. The river holds historical importance as it was once a border of the Roman Empire. On the Danube River cruise, you will be sailing through some of the most popular cities, such as Vienna and Bratislava. Moreover, you will be gliding past the Parliament building in Budapest.

Best Time to Cruise: A Danube River cruise is best from spring to early autumn, April to October.

4. The Ganges, India

A boat sailing in the Ganges River in Varanasi, India during golden hour.

The states of India are fragmented by rivers on different sides, out of which the Ganges is the country’s lifeblood. It is a spiritual trademark for the Hindu, the country’s biggest religion. A Ganges Cruise offers not just scenic pleasures but also takes you on spiritual pilgrimage and cultural exploration, passing through ancient cities, rural villages, and important religious sites. You can visit the holiest city in the world, Varanasi, where pilgrims perform rituals, prayers are sung in rhythm, and massive aartis are held every evening. Some of the cruises also take you through the colonial architecture and gardens of Kolkata.

Best time to Cruise: Plan a trip from October to March, when the weather is cool and favorable.

5. Chicago River, USA

Boats in the River in Chicago.

Ditch a long week of cruising and hop on a 75-minute tour by the Chicago River. This is a wonderful way to explore the iconic landmarks of the city, Tribune Tower, Willis Tower, Marina City and the John Hancock Center. Besides this, it provides a deep insight into the city’s urban development. You can hear how Great Chicago Fire of 1871 reshaped the city, how the river was reversed in the 19th century to prevent pollution and how the city became the global centre for architecture.

Best Time to Cruise: May to October is the best time for a Chicago River cruise, with pleasant weather and clear skies.

6. Seine, France

A brown color buiding near a water body in Seine in France.

Europe is home to several destinations for family cruise holidays . Paris is one of the most surreal river cruise destinations. The City of Lights gleams with skyscrapers and world-class art. You get to admire landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Louvre, and the Musée d’Orsay. Take a look at the medieval side of the city. Outside of Paris, many Seine River cruises stop in Giverny, the village where the famous Impressionist painter Claude Monet lived and worked. Sail across the Rouen and Normandy coasts and discover architecture with deep historical significance. The best part about the Seine River is it offers short cruises such as sightseeing cruises and dinner cruises, and also multi-day cruises covering different cities.

Best Time to Cruise: Spring to early fall, April to October, is the best time for a Seine River cruise, with warm weather and long daylight hours.

7. The Volga River, Russia

Floating on the longest European river, the Volga River Cruise steers through the breathtaking architecture, Orthodox heritage, and beautiful landscapes of Russia. Explore the capital city of Moscow and the former imperial city of St. Petersburg. Then, also cruise past the stunning onion-domed churches and traditional Russian villages.

Best Time to Cruise: Visit during the summer months, May to September.

8. The Rhine, Germany

One of the most serene European cruise destinations is Germany, and what makes it gorgeous is the dream-like flowing Rhine River. Separated into northern and southern sections, both parts offer vivid and unique features. The northern Rhine flows through Germany, offering an eye-catching view of hillside castles and flower-filled landscapes. The southern Rhine flows between Germany and France to touch Switzerland from the front. Running towards the South, it meanders through the Black Forest, spilling into the German town Alsace.

Best Time to Cruise: Spring to autumn (May to September), or during the Christmas market season in December.

9. The Mekong River, Southeast Asia

Flowing through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, the Mekong River is the ultimate source of resources for millions of people in Southeast Asia. A Mekong River cruise exposes you to the region’s cultural prestige, with stops at vibrant cities, floating markets, and remote villages.

Best Time to Cruise: Take the Mekong River Cruise from November through February for cooler temperatures.

10. The Mississippi River, USA

A pusher tug headed down current on the Mississippi River

The third-largest river basin in the world, the Mississippi River, stretches over 1.2 million square miles. Imagine water takes around three months to run through the entire river. Interestingly, the river is home to 260 fish species, around 25% of North America. The river flows through ten US states, so you can hop on any of the short-lived cruises and enjoy a wonderful and relaxing tour.

Best Time to Cruise: Spring (April to May) is the perfect time to take a cruise here.

Our Readers' Favorite 10 River Cruise Lines in 2020

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

river cruise liners

This year’s World’s Best Awards survey closed on March 2, just before widespread stay-at-home orders were implemented as a result of COVID-19. The results reflect our readers’ experiences before the pandemic, but we hope that this year’s honorees will inspire your trips to come — whenever they may be.

What could be better than slowly seeing the countryside of Europe, enjoying long wine-soaked meals, seeing the most iconic historic sites without standing in a single line — or having to lift a finger to plan it all? The dream is possible on a river cruise , and many Travel + Leisure readers know it, judging by the extensive praise they had for these outstanding brands. What’s better, river cruises are now gaining steam outside of continental Europe, as ships in Southeast Asia, along the Amazon, on the Nile, and even in the U.S. start to catch on with in-the-know travelers.

Every year for our World’s Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins/facilities, food, service, itineraries/destinations, excursions/activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in five categories, including river cruising.

While the top 10 river cruise lines tend to stay similar every year, it’s interesting to see which attributes readers feel most drawn to for each operator. Take, for example, No. 3 Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, which slipped two spots this year but still has ardent fans among T+L readers. “I loved every minute of the cruise,” said one voter, who traveled on the River Countess, which has since been refurbished and rechristened as the S.S. La Venezia . “The staff and the food were amazing. I felt pampered and was very pleased with my room. The excursions were carefully selected so that we saw the best of everything. This was the second cruise I’d taken with Uniworld, and I plan on going again.” Other readers echoed those sentiments. “We’ve taken a couple of Uniworld cruises . They are uniformly excellent on service, food, and itineraries,” said a past guest of the River Queen . “The excursions are well-planned and done in small groups, despite the number of people on the ship.” Where minor quibbles did arise, readers pointed to the staterooms as needing a rethink. “The rooms were a bit dated but I do know that they are going to be refurbished,” said one reader, who traveled aboard the River Empress .

The line’s sister brand, the No. 2 U by Uniworld, also had rave reviews, jumping from ninth place in 2019. “I love this fun and exciting concept,” said one reader of the edgier vibe aboard U’s twin ships, the A and B . While they sail the same rivers as other lines — the Danube, the Rhine — Uniworld has added tons of programming to appeal to travelers who might not think of themselves as river cruisers: sip-and-paint classes, silent-disco sessions, mixology sessions, and even camping on the top deck of the ships are all on offer. “So cool — could not get enough of the ice bar and the nightly entertainment on ship and on shore,” said one voter, who sailed on the B .

One of the iconic river-ship companies, No. 6 Viking, remained in the middle of the pack this year. Often credited with popularizing river cruising globally, Viking has in recent years expanded dramatically; the company now has 63 ships sailing in Europe, with additional vessels in Asia and Egypt, and is coming soon to the United States. That growth means they’re also finding new fans, like one guest who traveled aboard the Viking Tor : “It was my Cinderella vacation,” said this reader. “We thoroughly enjoyed the excursions and found the guides to be personable and knowledgeable, and they truly provided a unique experience in each port. I enjoyed the no-smoking aspect, the minimum age restriction to ensure relaxation and adult activities. Every meal was a wonderful experience and the chefs were present — and personable — frequently.”

Meanwhile, No. 8 Delfin Amazon Cruises, with its fleet of three ships that meet the luxury benchmarks set by Relais & Châteaux, impressed those looking for adventure. “The excursions were memorable, from trekking through the jungle to swimming with pink dolphins,” said one traveler who sailed aboard the Delfin II . “The service, the crew, the dining experience, and the excursions — everything went beyond my expectations,” said another, who also sailed the Delfin II .

With all this competition, it takes something truly special to clinch the No. 1 spot, but Crystal Cruises wowed travelers at every turn. Below, the reasons why, plus the full list of the best river cruise lines as voted by T+L readers.

1. Crystal Cruises

Score: 97.14

More information: crystalcruises.com

Though Crystal is relatively new to river cruising, having launched its first ship in 2016, the brand is the bar-none favorite for this style of sailing. This year, T+L readers gave the brand one of the highest scores in any category — cruise or otherwise — for its top-of-class trips that are redefining luxury travel. “Crystal changed the way we thought about river cruising,” said one guest, who sailed on the Crystal Mahler . “Every detail was taken care of.” Another past guest on the ship loved it, too: “The suite was better than any five-star hotel we've stayed in, including a huge bathroom. The staff was superb and service was always outstanding.” In fact, most of the raves for Crystal’s river ships ultimately came back to the theme of service, which readers said was phenomenal. One Crystal Mozart guest summed it up: “This was the best overall customer experience I’ve ever had, including food, service, and over the top attention to detail, care, compassion. We’ve been on ocean and river cruises, from the very large to the sailboat cruises. This was the best by far. We’ll be traveling with them again soon.”
