River Cruises from Frankfurt

The perfect starting point for discovering the rhine and main.

Frankfurt is the perfect starting point for a river cruise on the Rhine and Main. The city's central location in the heart of Germany and its excellent accessibility by car, train and plane make Frankfurt a popular departure port for a cruise. The vineyards on both sides of the riverbank and the many picturesque towns along the river, such as Würzburg and Wertheim, make the Main one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. You can also continue your journey on the Danube via the Main-Danube Canal, taking you down Central Europe's longest river to beautiful historic cities like Regensburg and Passau.

Downstream, the Main River flows into the Rhine just a few kilometers behind Frankfurt, which is why Frankfurt is also an ideal starting point for a boat trip on the Rhine. From Frankfurt, you won't have far to go on the Rhine to some of Germany's most beautiful historic cities, including Mainz, Speyer and Koblenz. And last but not least, when you take a cruise from Frankfurt, don't forget to visit the city on the Main River itself. Often "Mainhattan" is dismissed as a boring city of banks and skyscrapers. A big mistake, because Frankfurt has much more to offer than just modern architecture. With the city hall "Römer" and the Paulskirche, Frankfurt has two of the most important historical sights in Germany. But the city's museum landscape is also one of the most diverse in the country. Immerse yourself in over 700 years of European art history at the Städel Museum. Experience the history of film at the DFF - Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum. Or embark on a voyage of discovery around life at the Senckenberg Naturmuseum.

City Highlights

Frankfurt

The UNESCO World Heritage city of Bamberg enchants its visitors with a beautiful old town that invites you to stroll and discover. Sandstrasse, the city's most famous street, runs through the old town and is home to the Schlenkerla brewery, which has been in existence since 1405. The brewery pub is legendary and locals and tourists alike enjoy the smoked beer and Bamberg onions here. The Romanesque Bamberg Cathedral of St. Peter and St. George rises above the Sandstrasse. It is known as the imperial cathedral because the imperial couple Henry and Cunegonde are buried here. The imperial cathedral is also home to the only papal tomb north of the Alps.

On a cruise from Frankfurt, you will experience a unique combination of scenic and urban highlights. With its vineyard-lined banks and numerous castles and palaces, the section of the Main between Frankfurt and Würzburg is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful stretches of river in the whole of Germany. On a Main river cruise from Frankfurt, you will also discover some of the country's most idyllic small towns and, in Würzburg, a very special tourist highlight. The Rhine, which begins just behind Frankfurt, also offers an incomparable wealth of historical sights along its banks. In cities such as Mainz, Speyer and Strasbourg, you can discover a new tale from over 2,000 years of urban history in every alleyway. No wonder that the sights of the three Rhine cities are among the most visited in Central Europe.

Our tours are an unforgettable experience for people of all ages. Due to its location at the intersection of the Rhine and Main, Frankfurt is the perfect starting point for discovering both rivers. Both the Rhine and the Main are among the most scenic and historically interesting rivers in Germany. The many old towns, quite a few of which were founded by the Romans, and the numerous castles and palaces along the banks of the Rhine and Main bear witness to the rich past of both rivers.

On a river cruise on the Rhine and Main, you will experience a new highlight around almost every bend in the river. Accordingly, a VIVA Cruises cruise has something to suit every taste. Wine drinkers can sample the fine wines of the regional wine-growing regions in the countless wine-growing villages on the Rhine and Main. Passengers interested in history will enjoy the historical sights in cities such as Speyer, Strasbourg and Würzburg. Museum-goers will get their money's worth in the diverse museum landscapes of Frankfurt and Strasbourg. And sports enthusiasts can go jogging, cycling and inline skating on the banks of the Rhine and Main, as well as kayaking on one of the two rivers.

10 Best Rhine River Cruises

Sail past stunning castles, quaint towns, and vineyards on these Rhine River cruises.

river cruise frankfurt to amsterdam

Courtesy of Riverside Luxury Cruises

River cruising has grown in popularity in recent years, with new lines offering unique ways to experience Europe’s most iconic rivers, including the Danube, Douro, Seine, and, of course, the Rhine. “The Rhine River is famous for castles, cathedrals, historic sites, and medieval towns, offering majestic scenery as you travel through several European countries. You feel as if you’ve traveled back to a different time in our world,” Travel + Leisure A-list advisor Olga Placeres says.

On most Rhine River cruises, guests can explore on their terms, making this a great trip idea for multi-generational travel. From family-friendly trips to beer-focused itineraries to festive holiday cruises, here are 10 of the best Rhine River cruises for every type of traveler.

AmaWaterways

Courtesy of AmaWaterways

7-night Enchanting Rhine Cruise

Cruise expert Placeres named AmaWaterways one of her favorite river cruise lines. This family-owned and operated line offers all-inclusive river cruises with a range of shore excursions for both active and relaxed travelers. Several Rhine River cruises are available, and a few include the Moselle and Main Rivers. Christmas market cruises and wine-focused itineraries are also offered.

The Enchanting Rhine cruise begins in Basel, Switzerland, where passengers board their vessel (while the specific ship varies depending on the dates, all carry fewer than 170 guests). In Breisach, Germany, guests can choose a wine country bike tour, walking tour, or hike in the Black Forest. The cruise continues to Strasbourg, Heidelberg, and Rüdesheim, with options each day for active or relaxed excursions. The scenic Rhine River Gorge area is a highlight, and there are visits to Cologne and Düsseldorf before arriving in Amsterdam.

Viking River Cruises

Courtesy of Viking River Cruises

11-day Rhine and Main Explorer Cruise

Placeres also recommends Viking Cruises, which was established by Torstein Hagen in 1997 and operates river, ocean, and expedition cruises across all seven continents. Viking’s Rhine River cruises range from eight to 15 days, and itineraries go beyond the Rhine to include the Main, Moselle, and a voyage that goes across the North Sea to Norway’s fjords.

The Rhine and Main Explorer begins in Nuremberg and continues to Bamberg for a walking tour through the winding streets of the medieval city. Cruise highlights include palace tours in Würzburg, local Bavarian culture and food in Marktheidenfeld, scenic sailing on the Main River, touring the charming French city of Strasbourg, and admiring Germany's famous Black Forest. The tour ends with two nights in Basel, where you can take a tour of the city and enjoy cheese fondue.

Adventures by Disney

8-day rhine river cruise.

Adventures by Disney river cruises are designed for families, but they also offer adults-only (18+) experiences on Europe’s rivers. Instead of setting sail on a Disney Cruise Line mega ship, these itineraries use AmaWaterways river ships for a more intimate experience with a maximum of 156 guests. Travel writer Terry Ward took her six and seven year olds and her 18-year-old niece on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise in July. “I can confirm it’s a trip with total multigenerational appeal,” Ward says. “There were always multiple options for shore excursions — something to interest passengers across the board.”

“During a port of call in Germany’s Black Forest region, for example, we could choose a toboggan run through the forest with time spent carving wooden toys and learning to make butter, visiting Europa Park, or enjoying the medieval old town of Riquewihr.” Ward tells T+L, “On several nights, Disney’s Adventure Guides whisked the kids off to the lounge for their own fun — maybe a Disney movie and dinner or games — so the adults could try the chef’s tasting table or enjoy a quieter dinner. Teens had their own tables for dinner if they wished.” Ward added, “The Adventure Guides hailed from some of the countries we sailed through, so traveling with them in Europe felt a bit like being along for the ride with an in-the-know friend.”

Avalon Waterways

8-day Tulip Time for Beer Enthusiasts Cruise

After nearly a century in European tourism, the Globus family of brands launched Avalon Waterways in 2004, and it was ranked among the top river cruise lines in the world by T+L readers in 2024. Avalon’s Rhine River cruises range from five days to 11 days; several include the Moselle, and they offer seasonal Christmas market cruises.

The Tulip Time for Beer Enthusiasts cruise is a round-trip cruise from Amsterdam offered in the spring, with a beer expert on board to host lectures, beer tastings, and food and beer pairings. The ship heads to Rotterdam for a walking tour, bike ride, or a guided excursion to Keukenhof, known as the “Garden of Europe” with over seven million tulips. In Antwerp and Ghent, guests can choose between bike or walking tours, while guided tours in Willemstad take guests among centuries-old buildings. In Amsterdam, guests can take a guided canal cruise followed by a Dutch beer experience.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises

8-day Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure Cruise

This century-old, family-owned company offers travel experiences in more than 100 destinations, ranging from small-group tours to river cruises. Tauck’s Rhine River cruise itineraries range from eight days to the 15-day Grand European Cruise that covers nine countries along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers.

The eight-day Castles on the Rhine: Family Riverboat Adventure is a Tauck Bridges family cruise designed for guests of all ages. The cruise departs from Basel, and the next day, guests travel by rail to Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne to ride the world’s steepest cog-wheel train. In Strasbourg, there’s a French sing along and chocolate tasting. The family-focused fun continues at stops in Heidelberg, Rüdesheim, and Cologne before the ship reaches its final stop. In Amsterdam, guests can take a canal cruise, visit a windmill, or taste local cheeses.

8-day Rhine Christmas Markets Cruise

This Australian-founded company established in 1986 offers river cruises, ocean voyages, and expeditions to the polar regions. Billed as an ultra-luxury, five-star cruise line, Scenic offers special Rhine River itineraries that feature Christmas markets or focus on topics like wine and food.

The Rhine Christmas Markets cruise begins in Amsterdam with options of a walking, biking, or canal tour before setting off for Cologne, where guests can see the magnificent 13th-century Gothic cathedral, visit a brewery, and browse the Christmas markets. In Baden-Baden, a famed German spa town, browse the markets or soak in thermal waters. Koblenz, Mannheim, and Strasbourg are additional stops on this holiday-themed itinerary.

Emerald Cruises

8-day Jewels of the Rhine Cruise

Emerald, founded in 2013, specializes in luxury river and yacht cruises. Emerald's Rhine River cruises include an eight-day voyage and an 11-day cruise that includes the Moselle.

The Jewels of the Rhine cruise starts with two nights in Amsterdam, where guests can take a bicycle tour or canal cruise before the captain’s dinner. Then, it's off to Cologne and the charming cities of Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg, and Freiburg, where castles, historic churches, and half-timbered buildings await. The ship arrives in Basel for the end of the cruise the next day.

CroisiEurope

Founded in 1976 in France, CroisiEurope is the largest European-based river cruise line. The company also offers sea voyages and canal barge cruises. Their budget-friendly river cruises include some shore excursions, and Rhine River cruises vary in length from three days to two weeks or longer.

The five-day Rhine in Flames cruise boards in Strasbourg for a night of cruising. The next day in Rüdesheim, excursion options include a train ride to a wine cellar followed by a visit to the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments or a gondola lift to the Niederwalddenkmal and vineyard hike. The next day is the main event as the ship sails towards Trechtingshausen for the famous Rhine in Flames fireworks show. The ship arrives in Mannheim for an optional visit to Heidelberg and later a gala evening before sailing back towards Strasbourg.

A-Rosa Cruises

6-day Rhine Legends Cruise

This German company has been cruising the Rhine River and its tributaries since 2009. The family-friendly line has a kids club and family suites with plenty of room to spread out. Their river cruises range from four to seven days, and there is a fee for most excursions.

The five-day Rhine Legends cruises the Middle Rhine round-trip from Cologne. In Rüdesheim, guests can tour the countryside on a bike or train tour. Stops in Speyer, Strasbourg, Mainz, and Koblenz provide more ways to explore the beautiful region, before the ship returns to Cologne for disembarkation.

The Great Rhine Tour

August 5, 2019, 8 days | 9 cities | 2 countries.

river cruise frankfurt to amsterdam

Join us aboard the beautiful MS Royal Crown in the bustling city of Old Amsterdam.

Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands, is our first port of call. Learn about The Battle of Nijmegen, part of Operation Market Garden during WWII or visit one of the many museums of the city.  We sail upstream to visit Dusseldorf, the capital of North Rhine – Westphalia. A city that never sleeps! It is one of Germany’s richest cities – culturally and financially. But there is also nothing better than a few hours relaxing in the beer taverns in the old town.

Konigswinter is a small, charming riverside resort with hiking trails, romantic castles to visit and one of the oldest cog railways in Germany.

Remagen is romantic but also a reminder of the events of March 1945 and the attempted capture of the bridge – the last remaining bridge over the river Rhine. Why not visit the fascinating museum on the riverside, dedicated to peace?

Our next stop on the river Rhine is historic Koblenz, the city at the confluence of the Rhine and Mosel. This is a charming city with countless churches and museums to visit. A highlight is a trip across the Rhine by cable car up to the Ehrenbreitstein fortress and the Landesmuseum.

We sail through the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Rhine Gorge to Rudesheim. A charming wine town with countless Rieslings to try. Here you can visit the unique Siegfried’s museum or ride a cable car through the vineyards.

We reach Mainz, well known for its half-timbered houses, Romanesque, red stone cathedral and Medieval market squares. Also, home of the Gutenberg museum honoring the inventor of the movable press.

Our adventure comes to an end in Frankfurt on the Main river.

Rated 4/5 on  Cruise Critic  the MS Royal Crown is a luxury river cruise vessel with it’s on board ambiance “intended to compare with that of a private yacht” and the chef on board is generally regarded as one of the finest working on the rivers.

river cruise frankfurt to amsterdam

Welcome to Amsterdam! Your Great Rhine Cruise begins here in the Netherlands’ capital. This modern city with old world charm and historic significance provides the perfect starting place for your Teeming River Cruises European tour. After settling in your cabin, which will be your floating hotel room for the duration of the cruise, a mandatory Safety and Information Briefing will begin at 6 PM. Like countless tourist before you, pose by or even climb on the iconic I amsterdam letters. Explore the 700-year-old city of Amsterdam with its maze of canals and teetering, gable-topped buildings dating back to the city’s 17 th century “Golden Age”. The centuries-old Canal Ring Area of Amsterdam is not only iconic of this bustling city but also a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. At your leisure, stroll the cobbled streets, soak up some culture at one of the world-class museums (such as the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum or the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art), visit the Anne Frank House , take a canal cruise, experience a lively outdoor market or shop along the Nine Streets with their charming boutiques.

As one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Nijmegen will be sure to delight!  It was once a fortified city and is full of interesting historic buildings and museums such as the Valkhof Museum, a fascinating museum with Roman antiquities and famous art pieces and once the site of a Roman camp.  The war memorials commemorate the residents of Nijmegen who were killed during World War II.  It is also home to the oldest shopping street in the Netherlands, the Lange Hezelstraat. Nijmegen is full of delights! After, please join us to raise a glass to toast our voyage at the Welcome Reception.

Dusseldorf is an engaging mix of ancient and modern, with medieval history and urban trendiness. As you take in the sites of this one-time small fishing village, you will understand why it is rapidly becoming one of Europe’s top vacation destinations. Begin your exploration on the waterfront street Rheinuferpromenade (“Rhine promenade”), which connects the historic Old Town with the MedianHafen (i.e. the modern harbor). Visit landmarks like the Rathaus (City Hall), Burgplatz, St. Lambertus Basilica, and Rheinpark. Stroll the luxurious shops along the renowned Konigsallee, Germany’s most elegant avenue. With its beautifully restored houses, bridges, and fountains; the promenade is more than just a shoppers’ paradise but also an attraction itself. At the end of Konigsallee, you will find yourself in the tranquil Hofgarten, Dusseldorf’s version of New York’s Central Park. The park is home to the spectacular Schloss Jagerhof palace, a stunning reproduction of 18th century Rococo architecture. Complete the day in Old Town, locally nicknamed “the longest bar in the world”, with a glass of the local specialty Altbier.

Konigswinter is a popular resort in the Seven Hills mountain range topped by the ruins of Drachenfels castle, a national park. The Drachenfels(“Dragon’s Rock”), a hill 1,053 feet (321 meters) high, is crowned by the ruined castle built in the 12th century by the archbishop of Cologne and destroyed by the French in the 17th century. According to the Nibelungen legends, the Drachenloch (“Dragon’s Cave”) in the hill sheltered the dragon slain by the hero Siegfried.  Travelers can either hike up the mountain to savor the views across the Rhine Valley or travel the railway to the top with a stop at the fairy tale Drachenburg castle in the clouds which has been likened to a medieval castle, Gothic Cathedral, and Big Ben. All in all, visitors are enchanted with the folklore and fabulous views of this sleepy little town.

Remagen is not only a beautiful riverside resort but an important historical town with a fascinating past.  The main attraction is the museum dedicated to peace which is sited in one of the last remaining bridge towers. In 1945 the Ludendorff Bridge was one of the last two remaining bridges across the river Rhine in Germany when it was captured during the Battle of  Remagen  by United States Army forces during the closing weeks of World II.  The Arp museum is a must for art lovers or follow the twelve stations of the cross on a short uphill hike to the stunning Apollinaris church.

Koblenz truly is a feast for the eyes with its backdrop of vineyards, forests, and mountains. Snap a photo as you lean on the giant bronze thumb sculpture at Koblenz’s famous German Corner (Deutsches Eck), where the Rhine meets the Moselle River.  After leaning on the “thumb”, lean into history as you wind your way through the Old Town. Explore the French influence and ancient remnants of Roman walls. Stroll along the river promenade and roam the town’s romantic narrow streets, where you might encounter flower-filled parks, sidewalk cafes or possibly a weinstube (wine tavern). Sample a Moselle Riesling while drinking in the amazing atmosphere of the oldest wine region in Germany.

Delight yourself in the romantic ancient town of Rüdesheim at the foot of the Niederwald, famous for its wine and half-timbered buildings. Spend the morning sauntering down the renowned Drosselglasse, the narrow cobblestone lane in the heart of the Old Town. This pedestrian street is lined with charming shops, cozy wine taverns and inviting restaurants. Rüdesheim is enveloped with vineyards, earning it the reputation of the best wine growing region on the Rhine, some experts would argue the best in the world. It is especially well known for its Riesling wines. Visit the eclectic Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet, a museum of automated musical instruments.

Today you can get to start exploring the splendidly restored Old Town of Mainz with its half-timbered houses and medieval market squares. The state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, Mainz is famous for Romanesque cathedrals (such as the Mainz Cathedral with its lavish interiors), the Gutenberg printing press and fine wines. Tour the Gutenberg Museum, housing a replica of the 15th century Gutenberg printing press as well as two original Gutenberg bibles.  This charming wine-growing district is officially the “Wine Capital of Germany”. Savor some “Spundekas” (a spicy creamed cheese) with a local wine before heading back to the boat.

Your cruise comes to an end in the picturesque city of Frankfurt. Depart after breakfast, with the freedom to explore this world-class city on your own. Frankfurt is a diverse & cosmopolitan city that lies on the banks of the Main river.  This mighty city is a mix of old and new sitting side by side.  Discover the countless, fascinating museums such as the House of Goethe, the Fine Arts Museum or the city museum or sit back and relax in the old town surrounded by beautiful old architecture and try the famous Apple wine.  Whatever your taste Frankfurt has something for everyone with its modern city-scape and charming old town and shopping streets. While this is the end of your cruise, your memories will live on from your Great Rhine Tour. Thank you for cruising with Teeming River Cruises, where vacations come first and memories last.

Day Trip Rhine and Main River Boat Cruises from Frankfurt in Germany

Riverboats depart frequently from Frankfurt for day-trip excursions and pleasure cruises on the Main and Rhine Rivers in Germany.

Primus Line Boats in Frankfurt am Main for river boat cruises

Pleasure cruises on the Main and Rhine rivers are easy to enjoy from Frankfurt am Main. Primus and KD boats have several sightseeing cruises on the Main River – often with meals or after-work drinks – allowing passengers to enjoy views of the skyscrapers of Germany’s top banks and financial institutions. Longer day-trip cruises go to other destinations on the Main River and even on the Rhine. Buy tickets online for Primus or KD panorama one-hour cruises in Frankfurt.

Although it is occasionally possible to cruise to the Middle Rhine and the Loreley Valley from Frankfurt am Main, many visitors may find taking the train to Rüdesheim or other Rhine towns a better option. See By Train to Day Cruises on the Rhine River from Frankfurt for details.

River Boat Cruises from Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt is a popular departure point for riverboat cruises – both for multiple-day cruises and shorter day excursions. Several cruise lines call at Frankfurt but the biggest operators of day-trip cruises are Primus Lines and KD . It is generally easiest to use the line with the most departures, as prices are very similar.

Cruises on the Main River from Frankfurt are possible year-round — even a few times in January and February. The main cruise season is from April to October when cruises depart daily. During winter, except for the Advent Christmas market period, cruises are very limited and mostly on weekends only.

Day-trip excursion boats depart mostly from the northern shores of the Main River near the Eiserner Steg (pedestrian bridge). It is a short walk from the Römer square at the heart of Frankfurt’s old town .

Day-trip pleasure cruises from Frankfurt may be divided into four basic groups:

  • Short circular sightseeing or panorama cruises beginning and ending in Frankfurt lasting generally an hour or two. (Very frequent)
  • Half or full-day cruises on the Main River mostly to destinations upriver from Frankfurt. (A few times per month)
  • Full-day cruises from Frankfurt to destinations on the Rhine River. (Very limited — using the train is a better option)
  • Event and theme cruises (reservations are usually essential).

Circular Sightseeing Panorama Pleasure Cruises from Frankfurt

Cruise Boats in Frankfurt

The classic Frankfurt am Main circular sightseeing panorama cruise trips are 50 minutes upriver turning back near Gerbermühle or downriver turning at the Griesheim Schleuse (lock). Combining the upriver (Mainaufwärtz) and downriver (Mainabwärtz) cruises is hardly more expensive than a solo trip.

From April to October, these cruise boats depart daily at least seven times (more on Sundays). In March, boats depart on most weekends as well.

These panorama cruises are easily booked online for either Primus or KD boats .

A similar hour-long cruise departs a few times per month late at night as Sky-Light Tours to show off the lights of Mainhatten (Main + Skyscrapers reminding of New York + a lot of wishful thinking!). Departure times range from 20:30 to 22:00 depending on the time of sunset.

Day-Trip River Cruise Excursions on the Main from Frankfurt

The Maria Sybilla Merian, Primus Line's newest boat, in Frankfurt am Main.

A few times per month, day-trip excursions are possible from Frankfurt am Main upriver to Seligenstadt and even all the way to Aschaffenburg.

Seligenstadt is closely associated with Charlemagne and the main sight here is the Romanesque basilica that dates partly back to 830. Aschaffenburg is much larger and more interesting. Top sights in Aschaffenburg include the largest Renaissance castle in Germany, the Pompejanum (a copy of a Roman villa from Pompeii), and a collegiate church.

Cruise times from Frankfurt are around 3h30 to Seligenstadt and five hours to Aschaffenburg (slightly faster coming back). Combination tickets are available to do one leg of the journey by train.

The ship usually returns from Seligenstadt and Aschaffenburg two hours after arriving. In between, the riverboat offers local circular sightseeing cruises on the Main.

Day-Trip Cruises to the Rhine from Frankfurt am Main

A few times per year, it is also possible to cruise from Frankfurt am Main to Rhine River destinations including Rüdesheim , the Loreley Valley , Mainz , Wiesbaden , and occasionally Heidelberg on the Neckar River . Often, for these excursions, a bus is used one way.

The most frequent cruise is from Frankfurt down the Main River to Mainz and then on the Rhine River to Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim, returning a few hours later to Frankfurt. It is usually possible to change to another boat in Rüdesheim to cruise down the Loreley Valley and return by train from St Goarhausen.

Cruise traveling times from Frankfurt am Main are around 3h to Mainz, 3h30 to Wiesbaden-Biebrich, and 5h to Rüdesheim. The upriver returns are slightly slower.

On the whole, most travelers may find it better value (both time and money-wise) to take the train from Frankfurt to Rüdesheim and cruise on the more interesting part of the Rhein from Rüdesheim rather than take the boat down the Main.

Special Event and Theme Cruises from Frankfurt

Boat Cruises with Fireworks in Frankfurt

In addition to the regular circular sightseeing and scheduled cruises, many special events and theme cruises also depart from Frankfurt. Reservations are usually required.

Special event cruises are available year-round including New Year’s Eve cruises , cruises to see firework displays, theater, and music performances. Meal cruises often celebrate the start of a new harvest season.

After Work Shipping cruises depart a few times per week with drinks and a disco. Similar cruises are occasionally also available for departures from Mainz and Wiesbaden-Biebrich.

Tickets & Deals on River Cruises from Frankfurt am Main

Primus Lines sells only return tickets – this means that the price is usually the same whether returning by boat or by train to Frankfurt (but around €4 more expensive from Aschaffenburg or St Goarhausen, where an additional ticket must be bought at the station). Indicate at the time of purchase whether the return will be by boat or train.

Ticket prices for Primus Lines and KD in Frankfurt often differ only by a few cents making it hardly worth waiting for a later boat if cruising spontaneously.

Combination tickets (RMV Kombitickets) allow one leg of the journey by train, which is faster and allows travelers to stay longer at a destination than the boat does. If the RMV Kombiticket is bought in advance from Primus Lines, passengers can take the train to the destination, cruise back to Frankfurt, and continue to use public transportation from the Main to home. Alternatively, buy the combination ticket with the boat ticket to return after the cruise by train.

Reservations for regular circular and scheduled cruises on the Main and Rhine are usually not necessary but it is easy to buy tickets online for Primus and KD panorama cruises . Special event cruises usually require reservations, although available tickets are sold until the boat departs.

Children under 6 years (4 for KD) cruise free (maximum three children per paying adult) and children 6 to 14 pay half price.

Dogs and bicycles are mostly transported for free. Primus does not have a free-cruise-on-birthday policy – for such savings try KD lines . KD also has a more generous discount policy for seniors – starting at 60 years rather than 63 as on Primus – and for students up to 27 years old.

Best Cruise Deals and Discounts sorted by your dream destination

Sometimes it's all about the destination and that is certainly true of cruise destinations. The cruise port you depart from and the amazing cruise ports you visit define your experience as much as what cruise line or cruise ship you sail on. At CruiseExperts.com we understand that and have sorted these cruises by the places you'll visit on your cruise vacation. So whether it's a cruise to Alaska, a Caribbean cruise, cruises to Hawaii, a cruise to the Bahamas or Bermuda or a cruise to Mexico you'll find it easily with the help of our destination wizard. Maybe you're looking for a cruise vacation that's just a little different like a Panama Canal cruise, a Transatlantic cruise, cruises to Europe, a Tahiti cruise with a tour of the South Pacific, a down under adventure with an Australia / New Zealand cruise or even a fall foliage cruise through Canada and New England. Whatever “floats your boat” get started by selecting your dream destination on our cruise search page .

Last Minute Cruises can sometimes be the cheapest cruise deal.

Sometimes, but not always, the cheapest cruise deal is a Last Minute Cruise. You won't get a wide selection of stateroom categories or a chance to select your stateroom location but if your schedule is flexible you just might find a cheap cruise price on a last minute cruise. Last minute cruises are cruises leaving in the next 90 days. The cruise line really wants to fill those last few staterooms and sometimes will offer them at a discount cruise price in exchange for you giving up your right to a full selection of cabin categories or deck locations. CruiseExperts.com makes it easy for you to poke around and see what's available in last minute cruise deals. View our Last Minute Cruise Deals by clicking here and give it a try. This is one of our most popular website features.

COLOGNE CATHEDRAL Köln Städtereise mit A-ROSA

COLOGNE CATHEDRAL

Today, Cologne Cathedral is still one of the most important buildings in the Christian world. The walls of this masterfully designed place of worship give way to large window areas and delicate tracery. The Gero Crucifix on the north side of the ambulatory is one of the oldest remaining large-scale sculptures from the Middle Ages, and the window designed by Gerhard Richter is one of the most recent highlights.

ANTWERP'S VLAEYKENSGANG Kaffeepause in Antwerpen

ANTWERP'S VLAEYKENSGANG

Back to the 16th century: The hidden Vlaeykensgang from 1591 connects the Hoogstraat, the Oude Koornmarkt and the Pelgrimstraat, and takes its visitors on a journey into the past. Today, antique shops, art galleries and the exclusive restaurant of Sir Anthony Van Dyck can be found in the historical buildings. However, shoemakers and the poorest people in the city used to live here. Pay a visit to the cobbled alleyway and soak up the medieval atmosphere.

STRASBOURG CATHEDRAL Strasbourg Fachwerk

STRASBOURG CATHEDRAL

Indeed, all paths lead to the cathedral in Strasbourg – however, the most spectacular is when you approach the cathedral along the Rue Mercière (Grocer Street). It leads directly to the magnificent west façade, with the 16-petal rose window (14.5 metres in diameter) over the middle porch – the richly decorated main façade of the cathedral – which reflects the architecture of three centuries (1176-1439), from early Romanticism to the late Gothic period. Above the rose window is a 66-metre high platform, with 332 steps leading up to it. It is worth the effort, as you’ll have a wonderful view over the city and its surroundings.

AMSTERDAM'S CANALS Fluss in Amsterdam mit A-ROSA

AMSTERDAM'S CANALS

Amsterdam is a city with an abundance of water. With around 200 canals, moats, locks and other similar bodies of water, this European city welcomes you on a reflective tour of the canals. Lean back and take in the diversity of the capital city whilst the boat floats gently through the canals. The main canals Singel, Herengracht, Keizergracht and Prinsengracht flow through the city centre. You can book canal tours quickly and easily in the city, for example in the central station.

Passengers stranded for hours Activists block cruise ship access to Amsterdam

18.8.2024 - 22:40

Climate activists from the group Extinction Rebellion prevented a cruise ship from entering the port of Amsterdam on Sunday. They attached themselves to two locks in the port of Ijmuiden, the gateway for North Sea shipping traffic to Amsterdam.

No time? blue News summarizes for you

  • Climate activists from the group Extinction Rebellion prevented a cruise ship and an oil tanker from entering the port of Amsterdam for hours on Sunday.
  • According to a port spokeswoman, the members of the organization got stuck at two locks in the port of Ijmuiden, the gateway for North Sea shipping traffic to Amsterdam.
  • As a result, access for the cruise ship "Serenade of the Seas" was blocked.

As a result, access for the cruise ship "Serenade of the Seas", a ship with space for a thousand passenger cabins, was blocked, a port spokeswoman said on Sunday. An oil tanker was also blocked.

According to the ANP news agency, the Dutch police ended the blockade at around 5 p.m. and the cruise ship was able to sail on to its destination. Eight activists were briefly taken into police custody, but no arrests were made, a police spokesman said.

Blockade actions again and again

"Oil kills, stop the cruise ships" was spray-painted on one of the locks, as seen in a livestream from Extinction Rebellion.

It was the second action of this kind within a few days in the vicinity of the port of Amsterdam. On August 10, 2,000 passengers from a blocked cruise liner were transported to Schiphol Airport by bus and train, as reported by Dutch broadcaster NOS.

The climate activists from Extinction Rebellion have been repeatedly organizing blockades since 2022. Most recently, the important A12 highway in The Hague was particularly affected. According to the group, its actions are primarily a protest against subsidies for fossil fuels.

Amsterdam wants to reduce the number of ships

According to a study by the non-governmental organization Transport and Environment, cruise ships released more than eight million tons of CO2 in European waters in 2022. This is equivalent to 50,000 flights from Paris to New York. Nevertheless, according to the Federal Environment Agency, flying is the most climate-damaging form of transportation.

The municipality of Amsterdam is planning to reduce the number of ocean cruises from 2026 in order to make tourism in the city more sustainable.
