Absolutely fantastic holiday to Sri Lanka

Absolutely fantastic holiday to Sri Lanka booked through David at rickshaw. We loved being able to talk to David and explain everything we wanted to do and change before making our final plan perfect for us. The whole holiday went so smoothly especially with our own personal driver who was brilliant. He followed our itinerary plus added on extras stops along the way. I would recommend anyone to use Rickshaws for a complete stress free holiday. Thankyou so much for making our visit to Sri Lanka the best

Excellent customer service

I talked to Steven who had excellent knowledge of our holiday destination. He listened to my requirements and made helpful suggestions. Having decided on a rough plan mid morning, by mid afternoon we had a suggested itinerary with costings. This enabled us to look at our options and confirm the holiday the next morning. Just perfect. Thank you.

Amazing Rickshaw Holiday in Costa Rica

We’re just back from our Costa Rica holiday arranged by Steven at Rickshaw. We’re a family of 4 with children aged 12 and 14. I can’t thank you enough for all your hard work and expert knowledge planning the most amazing holiday ever and all the great guidance and advice along the way to help us get the most out of our travels. It really has been amazing and we’ve all loved every bit of it. The finalised itinerary was perfect and took us to the most stunning and fascinating places across Costa Rica. The activities/experiences which you arranged were mind blowing and the hotels have been perfect (all really lovely rooms, facilities, great locations and all authentically Costa Rican too). All the travelling arrangements have been absolutely seamless and took all the worries away about getting around. The balance of free time has allowed us to customise our holiday even further with additional activities and also have a great relax in the most beautiful surroundings. No idea where we’ll go next but I’m sure we’ll be in touch again in the future. I can highly recommend this amazing company and wouldn’t hesitate to book more adventures with them again in the future.

Agumentative, rude and sarcastic staff

I very rarely write reviews but I'm so annoyed and upset I had to. I do not expect staff to be rude, argumentative and sarcastic. I wanted an itinerary showing how many nights we would be staying and at how many hotels (9), nothing difficult. Instead I was continually pushed into booking flights and agreeing to a £20k holiday I knew very little about. Ceri did not talk through various options, just kept saying "what do you want to do". I dont know until I'm told the possibilities! I have since spoken to both Audley and Trailfinders, they were like a breath of fresh air. Very helpful, suggesting other things we could do and places to see in a much more thought out way. One of the hotels Rickshaw uses had such bad reviews the other companies would not send guests there. I suggest anyone reading this goes to another company and doesnt trust this rude woman

Hi Judy Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback and I apologise that you feel we fell short of your expectations for your holiday on this occasion. The itinerary we agreed on was the closest we could match to your wishes and at this stage the airline were unable to hold the flights for your trip any longer. We will follow up on your comments about the hotel and are always grateful to be able to improve on the experience we provide. Best wishes, Ceri

Costa Rica holiday

We used Rickshaw Travel for our holiday to Costa Rica. We were so impressed with them from start to finish. The communication has been brilliant and it is a really personalised service. The best part is that their agents know their markets, so they have been and done what they are recommending to you. Would use Rickshaw again in a heartbeat for our next adventure!

My family has just returned from a fabulous holiday in Costa Rica organised by Hannah at Rickshaw Travel. Hannah was knowledgeable and helpful throughout the booking process and recommended the itinerary and activities. The local tour operator in Costa Rica was excellent; responsive and helpful. I would definitely use Rickshaw again, particularly because I like their ethos of working with local communities.

Excellent service from start to finish

We have just returned from an epic family holiday to Costa Rica with Rickshaw. We were nervous as we had never spent this much on a holiday before, but it was a brilliant experience, made even more so by the excellent service by Rickshaw and their local partners. Nothing was too much trouble, and the local WhatsApp support was brilliant. Steven was really friendly and helpful throughout the whole booking process. We would definitely use Rickshaw travel again, and will be recommending them.

Sri Lanka 9-stop Tour

Just returned from two weeks in Sri Lanka - care was taken over our itinerary so that we had a great combination of locations and excursions in the order that we wanted. Everything went so smoothly before and during - that is the advantage of paying the extra and trusting the experts. Thank you to Ceri, Rickshaw, Heritage Tours and Dilhan our driver and guide for making our trip the perfect mix of relaxing and exciting.

Family holiday to Vietnam

We just had the most amazing 2 weeks in Vietnam. Rickshaw were great - I emailed them with what we were looking for, Emma then put together several bitesized trips for us, then added some extra things we wanted, removed some that weren't right for our family and we ended up with an excellent itinerary. She was also really helpful with my long list of questions! In Vietnam, the guides and organised trips were excellent, we had lovely hotels, and transport/transfers were always punctual. Having WhatsApp contact with both Rickshaw and their local agents was really helpful too. We felt very looked after throughout the whole booking process and holiday itself.

Hi Rachel Thank you so much for your wonderful review, we’re really happy you have thoroughly enjoyed your Rickshaw family adventure and loved travelling around Vietnam with us! Perfect trip with just a couple of hiccups.

My travels with Rickshaw went very well overall. Miles was extremely helpful and listened to everything we wanted for our trip to Indonesia. We have travelled to 44 countries now mainly in Asia so understand there can be changes and delays etc. I have chosen to use this company again as I feel like I understand how it all works now. The voucher system I found a little confusing to start with. This 3 week trip was a big deal for us going away for our 5 year wedding anniversary and been together 21 years this year (we are 37) so was willing to splurge a little money to ensure a fabulous trip. I normally plan all our trips and to hand over the control to a company was hard at first for me, so thanks to Miles for being so understanding with all my questions. I organised a couple of nights in Dubai on the way out to Indonesia and then a couple of nights in Ubud as I had found gorgeous quiet accommodation right on the non touristy rice fields, Villa Wedang'. Paradise. Both hotels made us feel very welcome and special. Rickshaws tour as such then started in Sanur before our epic journey on the Katharina boat with Seatrek sailing adventures. The hotel in Sanur where we stayed 1 night didn't start off very well. We got to reception around 7pm after a long day of exploring Bali so we were tired and really wanted a shower. One man asked us to sit down and they would bring us a welcome drink and check us in. Brilliant... Although then no one turned up and they forgot about us completely for 20mins. It was like the Mary Celeste. There was no one around. I then stood up and called excuse me behind the reception areas to which we were then seen to but in a hurry and still no welcome drink. They put us in a room on the third floor, just for the 1 night and we were leaving very early next morning. The rooms shower didn't really work well and they gave us a welcome letter with other people's names on. We were not made to feel special in any way considering they knew it was our anniversary and we felt very pushed to one side. We asked for a breakfast box for the morning and they said I had to collect it at 5am from reception and could not deliver it to our room which was quite far away and up many stairs. Anyway on check out I expressed our disappointment in the organisation of the hotel and how they made us feel and told them we will be back in 10 days for 2 nights and hope for a fresh and better experience when we return. When we returned all went very smoothly and they checked us in straight away, we got the welcome drink and they also decided to upgrade our room to the adult only club section as an apology for forgetting us and mixing up paperwork. We now have seen how this hotel really works and we're much happier in this section of the hotel and would have asked to stay they if we had known this existed which is also my fault for not researching the hotel enough. This was a very minor hiccup in an amazing 3 week adventure but I thought you needed to know so others aren't in the same boat. There was also a little error on the voucher on the last day as the pick up time was wrong. We were relaxing by the pool when my name was called by a member of staff saying our driver had arrived (4hrs early) I said I think there's been a mistake. So had to go to reception wrapped in a towel to talk to the driver as he was just concerned we were going to miss our flight, which was sweet. I showed him my Emirates app and that the flight was at 7.55pm (it was 11am at the time) there was an error on the voucher. All sorted and they came back at 4pm to collect us. But If i hadn't had been on it, we would have been at the airport for 8 odd hours. The hotels were very nice, we particularly liked the very quiet night in LB Komodo island and the return nights in Sanur. We would return to both hotels even though we are not normally a fan of big hotels. Puri Santrian in the end felt very relaxed and had different sections to make it all feel more cosy. Seatrek was just absolutely epic. We were welcomed with wine and fancy bed displays. The whole trip was perfect and the crew and leader Dion amazing. 1 of the best experiences of our lives. They have asked us to write a review for their Seatrek magazine as they loved our energy and enthusiasm. Overall the trip was perfect but with a couple of hiccups that could have been easily avoided. Ps not sure where we stand with internal flights delays with insurance? Our flight was only meant to be 1hr 15mins and it was delayed 1hr 20mins... Can you email me and let me know please as I didn't book this but may be able to get compensation for myself or the company. Thanks

Hi Natasha Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your review, we’re really happy you enjoyed travelling around Indonesia with us, especially good to hear about your Seatrek experience! We really appreciate your feedback and are so sorry that we missed some details in the planning which impacted on your experience. We will follow up on your comments about the hotel and ensure that all of our team are aware, so future errors are avoided in this area. I will also email you separately regarding your flight compensation. We are always grateful to be able to improve on the experience we provide so this is very helpful, thank you. Kind regards, Miles

Glorious travels in a place of manifold wonders

My teenage son and I had a terrific time in Costa Rica. What I like (and this is my second time using Rickshaw Travel) is how well the travel advisors (in this case, Kelly) listen: we got exactly what we asked for! There was a lovely mix of locations (mountains, beach, some city life - just as we had hoped), a good pace (around 2-3 days per location), and the order of the itinerary was great, too. It was good to start in the mountains and then move to the locations where wildlife was very much more abundant. (If it had gone in the reverse order, we would have possibly felt a bit underwhelmed by the mountains - which are stunning but offer above all birdlife, whereas the regions around Drake Bay and Manuel Antonio are just teeming with not only birdlife but also mammals and sea life). Transport was totally smooth and reliable. Hotels were fabulous - from the quirky (El Pelicano, in the mountains) to the lush and luxurious (Costa Verde, Manuel Antonio). We had so many highlights... snorkelling... mountain walks with waterfalls... whales... breakfast with monkeys... seeing the quetzals... amazing!

A wonderful company who went the extra…

A wonderful company who went the extra mile (and more) to make our holiday to Greece as perfect as it could be. They listened to our needs carefully (my daughter is neurodivergent) and built a tour that worked for us. When there was a small issue with the car hire our fabulous agent sorted it out quickly and efficiently. Our hotels were lovely and the staff couldn’t do enough to help. I would recommend Rickshaw Travel to anyone.

An amazing adventure in China!

We would just like to say a BIG thank you to Rob - our trip to China was absolutely amazing! We had a ball! Rob listened to our initial ideas and built our tailored itinerary just perfectly . The hotels were spot on- the locations just perfect...... and we really appreciated the bit of luxury in Xian and HK! We braved the metros and put ourselves out there- met some fabulous local people that added to our experience. All the transfers and trips went smoothly and Zoey helped with pointing us in the direction of some activities. We liked that there was time for independent travel too. It sadly rained torrentially in guilan so we couldn't raft but we managed to get a boat trip. Overall we had an incredible experience and we've already recommended you to some friends...we can't wait to go to Japan with you in September

Amazing travel company

We've just completed a trip to China which is our 6th trip Asian trip with Rickshaw. Each time through choosing modules to suit ourselves and through Rickshaw's super organisation and flexibility we've had amazing trips. The chosen local companies are always there to collect you from a plane or train journey giving you confidence to explore a country independently. The hotel choice is excellent, where if possible they are authentic and central with great staff. I can't praise Rickshaw enough.

(third) Adventure of a lifetime with the experts!

This is the third time travelling on a trip arranged by Rickshaw and it was just perfect. We travelled for 17 days to Thailand (Bangkok, Khao Yai, Kanchanaburi) and Cambodia (Phnom Penh,Koh Rong Samloeum Siem Reap). It was the ideal mix of, as I have been saying to people rather ineloquently "all the things". I found the variety of bitesize adventures just fabulous - we experienced everything we loved - jungle animal adventures, city buzz, island escape, (horrible but important) history lessons, temples, the most amazing food ever and the best people. The tour guides especially in Thailand were amazing! The drivers were always perfectly on time, lovely and the choice of accommodations amazing. We ranged from simply budget lodges, to floating rooms on the river to fancy beach resorts). Thanks to David and all of other colleagues who answered my panicky last minute questions about visa sites not working and boat tickets (that were of course all in hand!) We would never book an adventure with anywhere else now. The big problem is now...WHERE NEXT Rickshaw?

Hi Angie Thank you so much for your wonderful review, we’re delighted you have thoroughly enjoyed your Rickshaw adventure and loved travelling around Thailand and Cambodia with us! We’d love to help you get started on your next adventure, so please do get in touch when you're ready to start planning. Kind regards, David

The Tuk-Tuk (Auto Rickshaw)

Introduction, Tips, and How to Use the Tuk-Tuks in Asia

rickshaw travel thailand

Witthaya Prasongsin / Getty Images

The tuk-tuk (or "auto rickshaw" in some countries) is a sputtering, three-wheeled motorcycle taxi with origins as a cheap public transportation option.

Tuk-tuks perpetually jockey for position and clog the streets in Asia from Bangkok to Bangalore. Even Europe, Africa, and South America have their own versions of the fun, three-wheeled vehicle. The size and design of tuk-tuks vary from country to country. Drivers are fond of decorating their rides with lights, colorful paint, and dangling trinkets to help them get attention.

Although riding in a tuk-tuk in Thailand can be described as more chaotic than comfortable, taking at least one wild ride is a mandatory part of the experience! And if it's your first time, there's a good chance you'll get taken for a "ride" by the fast-talking driver as well.

Tuk-Tuks Vs. Taxis

Why take a tuk-tuk instead of a taxi? Some travelers mistakenly assume that tuk-tuks are a cheaper option for getting around. The smaller vehicles lack a lot of the creature comforts of regular taxis and seem like they would use less fuel, so the logic makes sense.

Realistically, locals may get an honest fare when using tuk-tuks, but you'll have trouble doing so. Tuk-tuks don't have meters, you'll need to negotiate your fare with the driver. Not knowing the regular price for routes already puts you at a disadvantage.

Taxis with working meters can cost about the same for distance covered as a tuk-tuk. Plus, they're safer, have seat belts, and you won't have to breathe exhaust fumes from nearby vehicles as you sit gridlocked in Bangkok's traffic. Even better, taxis have air conditioning.

As a tourist in Southeast Asia, there's really only one valid reason to take a tuk-tuk instead of a taxi: They're more fun!

The Tuk-Tuks in Thailand

There always seems to be more tuk-tuk drivers than willing passengers waiting outside of tourist stops in Bangkok. The end of Khao San Road in Bangkok is strewn with parked tuk-tuks, their drivers hoping to poach backpackers.

The tuk-tuks found in Thailand are open-air, three-wheeled carriages attached to a motorcycle chassis. The typical capacity of a tuk-tuk in Thailand is two average-sized people, maybe three at most, but resourceful drivers sometimes find a way to squeeze entire families inside when necessary!

Prices for rides in tuk-tuks need to be negotiated before you get underway. The word  tuk means "cheap" in Thai, however, unless you are an expert at haggling prices or you catch the driver on a bad day, metered taxis are often cheaper and more comfortable than tuk-tuks in Thailand.

Note: In some places, tuk-tuks / auto rickshaws are the primary mode of public transportation. Chiang Mai in Thailand is one place where tuk-tuks are the default for getting around. Songthaews are another option there.

Tips for Using Tuk-Tuks

  • Tuk-tuks are open-air vehicles. You'll sweat in the humidity when not moving and breathe in plenty of rush-hour exhaust in Bangkok's gridlock traffic.
  • Keep your bags close, and don't allow any straps to dangle. Thieves on motorcycles have been known to snatch bags from moving tuk-tuks then speed away.
  • The most important rule of transportation in Asia is to always agree on the price to your destination before getting inside of any vehicle — especially tuk-tuks.
  • Hailing a passing tuk-tuk on the street — major thoroughfares are better — is often cheaper than approaching drivers who are parked in front of tourist places all day.
  • Tuk-tuks don't have seat belts; you ride at your own risk!

The Classic Tuk-Tuk Scam

As many hardened budget travelers will warn, drivers all over Asia can be experts at luring passengers into upselling and scams.

One typical scam in Thailand (and one of the oldest scams in Southeast Asia) is for a tuk-tuk driver to offer his services for an afternoon for a rate that can be as low as 50 cents. Sounds good, but you have to agree to go inside of at least three shops along the way. In exchange, the driver receives fuel coupons and possibly a commission from the shopkeepers.

Technically, you do not have to purchase anything, but each shop — often a tailor, jewelry shop, and souvenir shop — will pour on the sales pressure to recoup the cost of the fuel coupons. They'll waste your valuable trip time. Anyone who has agreed to a timeshare presentation while on vacation understands all to well how this goes.

Save your shopping money  for the local markets instead; you'll be glad you did.

Air Pollution From Tuk-Tuks

Unfortunately, tuk-tuks contribute a significant amount of pollution to the existing problem in large cities already choked with poor air quality. Although some auto rickshaws run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), many of the old two-stroke engines are heavy polluters. Some drivers remove catalytic converters for better fuel efficiency. Modifications are done at the expense of making the vehicle "dirtier," hence the sputtering noise and black smoke.

Sri Lanka , India, and several other countries have banned the high-emission engines or put initiatives in place to encourage cleaner alternatives. Electric rickshaws are growing in popularity in South India.

Auto Rickshaws Around the World

Tuk-tuk / auto rickshaw variants can be found throughout Asia, Africa, South America, and even in Europe. Much the way that Jeepneys in the Philippines are celebrated in all their gritty, quirky glory, tuk-tuks are honored in Thailand and neighboring countries.

In 2011, Cambodia upped the ante by releasing a fleet of low-emission tuk-tuks equipped with Wi-Fi . The annual Rickshaw Challenge encourages adventurous travelers to purchase, customize, and then race auto-rickshaw across long distances in India .

Makes and styles of tuk-tuks differ throughout the world. Many are fun, colorful, and sometimes even wacky. But no matter the country, you can count on most of them being manned by a fast-talking driver!

What is a tuk tuk?

What is a tuk tuk?

A tuk tuk (also spelled tuktuk or auto rickshaw) is a motorized three-wheeled vehicle commonly used as a form of urban transport or taxi in many countries, especially in Thailand, India, Cambodia , and others. The name "tuk tuk" comes from the sound of the vehicle's small engine.

Tuk tuks typically have a small cabin for the driver at the front and a covered seating area at the back for passengers. They are known for being able to navigate through narrow streets and heavy traffic, making them a popular choice for short trips and sightseeing tours.

The cost of a tuk tuk ride in Bangkok can vary widely depending on a number of factors, including the distance of the trip, the time of day, the traffic conditions, and the driver's own pricing. Unlike taxis, tuk tuks do not have meters, so the fare is usually negotiated before the ride begins.

As a rough estimate, a short tuk tuk ride within central Bangkok might cost anywhere from 50 to 150 Thai Baht (THB) , which is approximately $1.50 to $4.50 USD , depending on the exchange rate. Longer rides or those taken during peak hours or to more distant locations could be more expensive, potentially costing upwards of 200-300 THB ($6-$9 USD) or more.

What is the history of tuk tuks in Thailand?

What is the history of tuk tuks in Thailand?

Tuk tuks can trace their ancestry back to the early 20th century. Back then, they were known simply as "sam lor" (meaning '3 wheels' in Thai) and were pedal-powered. Legend has it that the first sam lor was wheeled out in Ratchasima (Korat) Province in 1933 , when a Chinese merchant attached two big stabilizers to his ordinary bicycle.

The design caught on, and pretty soon sam lor were ferrying passengers all over the place. They became so popular that Bangkok authorities banned them from the city. But sam lor would soon be back with a bang, when motorized rickshaws arrived from Japan in the 1960s. These would evolve into the modern beasts that roam the streets.

Riding a tuk tuk is an essential Bangkok experience (source: Adam Dore / Unsplash).

From motorization to custom designs, tuk tuks are always changing with the times. Today, Bangkok residents are pushing for a more eco-friendly incarnation. So, what does the future hold for the humble rickshaw?

The future of tuk tuks will depend on how they adapt to environmental concerns, regulatory changes, technological advancements, and shifts in urban transportation dynamics.

5 pro tips for riding a tuk-tuk

A fun way to get around, tuk tuks are always moving with the times (source: Max Bender / Unsplash)

Riding a tuk-tuk can be a thrilling and authentic way to navigate through the bustling streets of cities where they are a common mode of transport in Bangkok. Here are five pro tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable tuk-tuk experience:

1. Agree on the fare before you start

  • Always negotiate and agree on the fare before you get into the tuk-tuk. Some tuk-tuk drivers may try to overcharge tourists, so it's important to settle on a price you're comfortable with.
  • In some places, tuk-tuks might have meters, but they are often not used. If they are, make sure the driver resets it before you start your journey.
  • Don't be afraid to walk away if you can't agree on a fair price. There's usually another tuk-tuk around the corner.

2. Know your route

  • Have a general idea of where you're going and how long it should take to get there. This can help prevent drivers from taking unnecessarily long routes to increase the fare.
  • Use a map or a GPS app on your phone to follow the route if you're unsure about the direction.

3. Keep your belongings secure

  • Tuk-tuks are open vehicles, making it easy for opportunistic thieves to snatch bags or valuables. Keep your belongings close to you and avoid displaying expensive items.
  • If you're carrying a backpack or a purse, keep it between your feet or on your lap rather than hanging it over the side.

4. Be prepared for the elements

  • Tuk-tuks are open-air, so you'll be exposed to the weather. Wear sunscreen during the day, and if it's the rainy season, have a poncho or umbrella handy.
  • Pollution can be a problem in busy cities, so consider wearing a mask if you're sensitive to dust and exhaust.

5. Stay alert and safe

  • Hold on tight, as tuk-tuk rides can be bumpy and drivers sometimes navigate traffic aggressively.
  • Be aware of local traffic laws and customs. In some places, tuk-tuks may not be allowed on certain roads or in certain areas.
  • Avoid riding tuk-tuks late at night in areas that are known to be less safe or where you're unfamiliar with the surroundings.

With all the above in mind, here's one extra tip that many forget when taking a tuk-tuk in Thailand: Smile! As with so many things in the Land of Smiles, a good sense of humor – like a good tuk-tuk – goes a long way.

If you're planning a trip to Bangkok, remember you can find the best deals on flights, hotels, tours, and attractions over at Trip.com.

The Tuk-Tuk - Auto Rickshaw

The most unique transportation tools in thailand.

  • Thailand Transportation

First of all, what is a Tuk-Tuk?  Also known as an auto rickshaw, the vehicle made its first appearance and became popular in Southeast Asia, the three-wheeled, open-air vehicle is one of the most unique transportation tools and just continues to grow in popularity around the world.

At beginning, a two or three-wheeled cart pulled by a person came into use around 1879.  And those human powered versions are now the ones known as rickshaws. Dating back to 1933, rickshaws were introduced to Thailand. Later, Thailand imported engine powered auto rickshaws from Japan in around 1960. They were used to replace the human powered rickshaws.

Actually the low key Thai tuk-tuk is a national symbol of Thailand and among the top of the authentic experience for all visitors. Of course the tuk-tuk also serves as an important mode of transport for locals in Thailand. The vehicle fits perfectly into local people’s everyday life. You’ll see more variation in Tuk-Tuk design in Thailand such as dazzling lights, colorful paints as well as other decorations to attract customers.

Tuk-Tuks vs. Taxis

The reason to use a tuk-tuk instead of taking a taxi? Some visitors take it for granted that the tuk-tuk is a cheaper method to get around. Some basic logic supports the idea. Obviously, the smaller tuk-tuks are short of the spacious comfort compared with regular taxis and it seems tuk-tuks are economical of fuels.

rickshaw travel thailand

To be frank, locals are more likely to get an honest fare when taking tuk-tuks, but travelers may have difficult in doing so. Tuk-Tuks are unmetered. You'll have to negotiate the deal of fare with your driver. Without the basic knowledge of the regular price for routes, you are already placed at a disadvantage.

The cost for a taxi ride can be the same or often less expensive than the cost of a tuk-tuk ride for the same distance. Besides, taxis are safer with the seating belt. And you can avoid the exhaust fumes from other vehicles when you are stuck in Bangkok's heavy traffic. Not to mention, taxis are air conditioned.   Taking all the above into account, why do you still choose to take a tuk-tuk instead of a taxi? The only reason is for more fun experience!

The Tuk-Tuks in Thailand

It seems that there are always more tuk-tuk drivers than potential passengers waiting outside of tourist spots in Bangkok . Parked tuk-tuks dominate the end of Khao San Road of Bangkok with their drivers hunting for backpackers.

Typically a tuk-tuk in Thailand can ride two medium-sized passengers, perhaps three at most while sophisticated drivers sometimes are even able to squeeze the whole family inside when needed.

Keep this in mind: always agree the price of your ride before you get into the Tuk-Tuk. Your driver will likely quote an initially over-priced fare, anticipating that you will knock him or her down to at least some degree.  In general, will be a little more expensive than a taxi. However, it shouldn’t cost much more than the equivalent fare in a metered taxi.

Note: In some places of Thailand, tuk-tuks are the main method of public transportation. For instance, Chiang Mai in Thailand is among the places where tuk-tuks are most usual tools for getting around. However, Songthaews are another choice there.

Tips for Using Tuk-Tuks

  • With tuk-tuks being open-aired, you cannot avoid sweating in hot weather when not moving and take in lots of exhaust in Bangkok's heavy traffic.
  • When you’re on your ride, do take care of your belongings and keep an eye out for bag-snatchers on passing motorcycles. You’re unlikely to fall prey, but it is always to be alert.
  • The key rule of transportation in Asia is to always agree on the price for the route before hopping on any vehicles - especially tuk-tuks.
  • It's usually cheaper to hail a passing tuk-tuk on the street - the main avenues are better - than choosing a driver who waits in front of a tourist attraction the whole day.
  • Tuk-tuks don't offer seat belts and you take the risk by yourself!

The Classic Tuk-Tuk Scam

There can be no denying that the lack of meter gives opportunistic drivers the chance to charge more. This is usually the experience of travelers. But is often the case for locals as well and especially at times when there are few taxis available (e.g. when raining).

While Tuk-Tuks are a great way to get around Thailand, there are some bad apples among Tuk-Tuk drivers scamming passengers.

Tuk-Tuk drivers know who they can charge high prices, especially first- time visitors who have no ideas of how much they should pay. Generally, this means there is also opportunity to negotiate a little bit, but always ask before you get in. Most Tuk-Tuks will start charging at around 50THB for a short ride.

In tourist areas, you also do need to watch out for Tuk-Tuks who scam by offering you a very low price (or even free) for a few hours. They will take you to shopping places where they get commissions from. You can find Tuk-Tuks with normal prices at local markets or non-touristic places.

Air Pollution from Tuk-Tuks

Unfortunately, tuk tuks cause a lot of pollution to the existing problems in big cities, which have already been suffocated by poor air quality. Despite the fact that some auto rickshaws use liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), many old two-stroke engines cause serious pollution. Some drivers uninstall the catalytic converter in order to improve fuel efficiency. The modification is at the expense of even "dirtier" vehicles, so sputter noise and black smoke will be generated.

Some countries like Sri Lanka and India have banned the use of high emission vehicles or taken measures to encourage the use of more eco-friendly alternatives. Electric rickshaws are becoming more and more popular in South India.

Auto Rickshaws Around the World

You can find variants of Tuk-tuk / automatic rickshaw all over Asia, Africa, South America and even in Europe. Just as the jeeps in the Philippines is celebrated for its tenacious and unique glory, tuk-tuks are also respected in Thailand and neighboring countries.

In the year of 2011, Cambodia increased its bets and launched a number of low emission tuk-tuks, which were even equipped with Wi-Fi. Annually, the Rickshaw Challenge attracts brave travelers to buy and then customize rickshaws for long-distance races in India.

With different brands and styles, tuk-tuks vary all over the world. Many are interesting, colorful, and sometimes even eccentric. But whichever country, you can expect most of them to have a fast-talking driver!

Samlors (Thai Rickshaws)

In many Thai towns and cities, samlors are still used as a means of transport. The traditional samlor ( sam =three; lor =wheel) is a rickshaw which is pedaled by the driver whilst the passenger sits in the back. Some motorized rickshaws are also called samlors, but more commonly the motorized versions are known as tuk-tuks.

The pedal samlors are certainly a sedate way to travel and hark back to a bygone era. They are usually operated by elderly men who at first glance don’t appear to have the strength required for the job. However, appearances can be deceiving and the men that pedal the samlors are as hard as teak and can put younger men to shame when it comes to fitness and endurance levels. If you want to ride in a samlor there’s no need to feel sorry for the driver; this is the way he makes an honest living. He isn’t there just for the benefit of the tourists and there are plenty of Thai people (often elderly women) who prefer this traditional and elegant form of transport.

You won’t find the pedal samlors everywhere in Thailand, but you will see them in places such as Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Hua Hin. Prices normally depend on the distance you travel, but as a tourist you may wish to negotiate a price for a set amount of time.
