Location and Area Cambodia is situated in the heart of Southeast Asia. Covering a total area of 181,035 square kilometres, Cambodia shares its border with Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Cambodia’s main geographical features, the low-lying Central Plain, includes the Tonlé Sap basin, the lower Mekong River flood-plains and the Bassac River plain. Mountain ranges occupy the north, east, in the south-west and southern part of the country. The south and south-westerly part of the country face the Gulf of Thailand with a 443 km long coast overlapping 4 provinces; Kep, Kampot, Koh Kong and Kampong Soam (Sihanoulville) - collectively dubbed the 4K coastal zone. This charming stretch is characterized by mangrove forests, peninsulas, sandy beaches, headlands and bays with over 50 islands within the territorial waters. The Tonlé Sap Lake, one of the world’s most varied and productive ecosystems and the mighty Mekong River, which traverse the country from north to south, are two outstanding features that contribute to the population that lives in the region. Climate Like most of Southeast Asia, Cambodia’s climate is hot and warm almost all year round. The climate is dominated by the annual monsoon cycle of rainy and dry seasons. The rainy season lasts from May to October, and the dry season from November to April. December to January are the cool months while the hottest period is in April. The average temperature is 27-28ºC. The monsoon season may carry some rains but these quite often occur during the late evening and overnight and are not likely to spoil your enjoyment. Demographics Total population of Cambodia is 17 million. Population density is 78/km2. Ninety per cent of residents are Khmer; the rest are Cham (Khmer Muslim), Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, Thai, Phnorng, Kuoy, Stieng, Tamil, etc. Chinese influence is strong, particularly in the business sector. However, English is more widely understood.

The Cambodian Riel is the national currency. However, USD is widely accepted and generally preferred especially when the cost of an item is substantially large since the exchange rate floats around 4000 riel to one US dollar. Nonetheless, one could enjoy better value for your money when using the Riel. When making a purchase in USD, you will most likely receive your change in Riel.

Cambodia eyes over 5.6m international tourists by 2024.

  • 27 Jun 2023

Cambodia expects over 5.6 million international tourists and over 16.4 of national tourists in 2024 by developing tourism infrastructure, sports events and implementation of digital technology, according to the roadmap plan of the Ministry of Tourism.

ministry of tourism in cambodia

Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, on Thursday, chaired the seminar attended by over 800 official members, along with Hor Sarun, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Tourism, and Nep Samouth, Director-General of Tourism, held at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel in the capital.

Addressing the closing ceremony under the theme of ‘Summarize the plan to promote Cambodia’s tourism sector, during and after the Covid-19 crisis’, Nep Samouth presented the tourism statistics reported in May 2023.

He also highlighted that Cambodia’s tourism is rapidly revising from the Covid-19 crisis and the government has agreed to continue to support the strategies for resilience and recovery to speed up the process.

Samouth said that in response to the current situation, the government aims to promote Cambodia as a clean and green tourist destination. He revealed that the government plans to build a sports stadium that is capable to contain 10,000-20,000 people to promote sports events and tourism in Siem Reap province. He urged the private sector and business institutions to promote tourists from China and Muslim society.

Thong Khon said, “The economy of Cambodia will increase by 6.6 percent and even up to seven percent in the next few years with an increasing number of both international and national tourists, which is expected to reach 5.6 million international tourists and 16.4 national tourists in 2024.”

He continued that the government has set a roadmap to promote tourist destinations in Cambodia through three major factors. The first factor is the development of tourist infrastructures such as a new airport, tourist ports and expressways. Second, is the promotion of more sports events in Cambodia and the last factor is the implementation of digital technology to reserve hotels, book tickets or make payments.”

Speaking to  Khmer Times  Nep Samouth said, “The development of tourism will reap benefits as a whole to Cambodia, not just a certain province with more tourist destinations. The government will manage the budget to improve roads, schools, hospitals and tourist sites across the whole country.”

He told that while developing the tourist destinations in Siem Reap, Ratanakiri and Kep province, the government has set four new poles to attract tourists which include Battambang, Pursat, Pailin, and Banteay Meanchey province.

The government has launched the ‘Best tourism business campaign for visit Cambodia in 2023’ in line with the ‘IBEST’ concept which stands for improving service quality, booking, environment, safety and technology.

What is Ecotourism?

E cotourism  is  “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local  people, and involves interpretation and education”  (TIES, 2015). As an ecotourist in Cambodia, you can explore and  experience nature in a sustainable manner, respect our cultural heritage and most importantly, build environmental awareness.

Ecotourism activities not only bring together nature conservation efforts, the local people and sustainable traveling – it can make a lasting positive impact on the local communities and environmental ecosystems. Being a real ecotourist is much more than having a holiday in nature, it is becoming part of the nature, while caring, supporting, and understanding it.  Enjoy becoming part of EcoCambodia .

Cambodia to launch e-Arrival card for air passengers next month

ministry of tourism in cambodia

PHNOM PENH – Cambodia will launch in September an e-Arrival card scheme for passengers flying to the South-east Asian country, Prime Minister Hun Manet said on Aug 12.

The e-Arrival digital card will replace paper forms for immigration, health and Customs declarations. It will be available on www.arrival.gov.kh or via the Cambodia e-Arrival app in the App Store and Play Store for mobile phones or electronic devices.

The e-Arrival system will be officially launched at Cambodia’s three airports from Sept 1 to facilitate the arrivals of national and international travellers, Mr Hun Manet said on his official Telegram channel.

According to the General Department of Immigration, the e-Arrival app will make it easier for passengers to complete immigration formalities and health procedures in one form.

It said foreign passengers will still need to show or obtain a visa upon arrival and, within seven days before their arrival, fill in their immigration, health and Customs declarations in the e-Arrival card.

Mr Thourn Sinan, chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia chapter, said it will help attract more international tourists to the country.

“The e-Arrival card app could streamline the entry process for tourists, potentially attracting more visitors,” he told Xinhua. “By offering convenience and efficiency, the app may enhance the country’s appeal.”

Tourism is one of four pillars supporting Cambodia’s economy, The other three are exports of garments, footwear and travel goods; agriculture; and construction and real estate.

It received 3.16 million international tourists in the first half of 2024, up from 2.57 million in the same period in 2023, according to the Ministry of Tourism. XINHUA

Yunnan and Cambodia work to promote tourism

ministry of tourism in cambodia

This year marks the China-Cambodia Year of People-to-People Exchange. To deepen cultural exchange between the two countries, the Cambodia Ministry of Information and the information office of the Yunnan Provincial People's Government organized the opening ceremony of the Cambodia Siem Reap Angkor International Airport Cambodia-China cultural corridor on Tuesday in Siem Reap.

The corridor is located in the international passenger departure area of the airport, and includes Face to Face with World Heritage: Civilizations Hand in Hand , a themed photo exhibitionof 100 images mainly from China and Cambodia, and other countries along the Mekong River.

Another display area showcases intangible cultural heritage items from Yunnan and Cambodia, including embroidery and carving.

On Tuesday, intangible cultural heritage inheritors and performers from both countries displayed their craft and work to waiting passengers.

Wang Jianghong, deputy director of the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, says that a series of World Heritage tour routes connecting Yunnan with Cambodia, Thailand and Vietnam will be introduced during the event, inviting overseas tourists to experience an amazing journey in the Lancang-Mekong River region, and to explore beautiful China.

"We hope that through this activity, we can promote cultural and tourism cooperation between Yunnan and Cambodia, create innovative tourism products and services, and a new pattern of cross-border tourist cooperation," says Wang.

MakeMyTrip partners with Ministry of Tourism to invite Indians to rediscover ‘India’

Legendary poet and lyricist gulzar saab pens a heartfelt tribute, inviting the global indian community to visit india.

Today, millions of people of Indian origin live across the world, many of whom have achieved international success and captured global admiration. Special occasions like Independence Day often stir a deep sense of pride and nostalgia in their hearts, reminding them of their roots and its vibrant culture. Recognising this enduring connection, MakeMyTrip, in collaboration with Ministry of Tourism, has launched a special campaign on the eve of India’s 78th Independence Day, inviting Indians worldwide to rediscover their roots with ‘ India: The Homecoming .’

As a central piece of the campaign, an online film is being unveiled that beautifully captures India’s transformation, brought to life through the evocative words and voice of the legendary Gulzar Saab. The core message of the film is, “कितना हुआ है इन दिनों बदलाओ तो देखो, तुम अपने घर में लौट कर आओ तो देखो,” (kitna hua hai inn dino badlav toh dekho, tum apne ghar mein laut kar aao toh dekho).

Highlighting the importance of the campaign,  Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism & Culture, said: “In our efforts to enable Indian diaspora become Incredible India Ambassadors through the Chalo India initiative, the call to encourage Indian diaspora to rediscover their homeland and experience a transformed India, is paramount. This Independence Day, we call upon Indian diaspora across the globe to take a trip back home, and experience Incredible India in all its richness, not just for themselves – but for everyone whom Incredible India awaits.”

Rajesh Magow, Co-founder & Group CEO, MakeMyTrip said:  “We are thrilled to launch the ‘India: The Homecoming’ campaign, aimed at inviting the Indian diaspora to rediscover a transformed India. By highlighting the progress, beauty, diversity, and rich heritage, we aim to inspire a sense of pride and nostalgia, encouraging the global community to visit and explore the nation. This initiative is about celebrating the unbreakable bond that every Indian, no matter where they are in the world, shares with their homeland.”

Building on the recent announcement of MakeMyTrip’s global accessibility, which now allows travellers worldwide to engage with the platform seamlessly, this campaign also extends the legacy of last year’s successful Independence Day initiative, ‘The Traveler’s Map of India.’ This initiative highlighted over 600 hidden travel destinations across the country, promoting domestic tourism and uncovering the nation’s hidden gems.
