Caribbean Ports of Call
Disney Cruise Line sails to a wide variety of ports on their Caribbean cruises. These Caribbean ports offer historical significance, shopping, water recreation, and other outdoor recreation.
Western Caribbean Ports of Call
Costa maya, mexico.
Costa Maya is located on the Yucatan Peninsula and is comprised of two small villages. This location is a relatively new area for tourists, so there is less of a “touristy” feel to it. The ruins at Chacchoben were constructed by the Mayans in the 4th century and were opened to the public recently. With beaches, shopping, and restaurants, there are many fun things to do.
Cozumel, Mexico
Cozumel is an island off the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. This island contains many ruins from the Mayan culture, as well as some of the world’s healthiest coral reefs. There are plenty of beach options to soak up the sun, and there is some duty-free shopping that is touted to be one of the world’s best duty-free ports.
Castaway Cay
Enjoy the white sand beaches on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island in the Bahamas! Of the island’s 1,000 acres, only 55 acres have been developed for guest use. There are beautiful beaches with areas reserved for kids, teens, families, and adults-only. Each person can find his place to have fun and relax. The cruise ship docks right at the island, allowing guests to walk off the ship. Port adventures abound, and the Key to the World card can be used for purchases on the island.
Falmouth, Jamaica
Falmouth is on the northern coast of Jamaica and is central to popular Jamaican locations. Head east to Ocho Rios and Dunn’s River Falls, or head west to Montego Bay and the beaches of Negril. Jamaica is also a great place to try traditional jerk cuisine with fresh Jamaican produce.
Georgetown, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands
Enjoy Seven Mile Beach for snorkeling and swimming. Visit historical sites, hike a 65-acre woodland reserve, or shop on Cardinal Avenue. This port requires tendering.
Key West, Florida
Key West lies near the end of the chain of islands known as the Florida Keys and is the southern-most city in the continental United States. This city, with its rich history and ravishing natural beauty, is probably the best known small town in the United States. It has an average annual temperature of 77 degrees and rarely varies more than 10 degrees in either direction. It has never seen frost or snow and averages only 39 inches of rain per year. You’ll have plenty of time to walk in the footsteps of Thomas Edison, Lou Gehrig, Harry Truman, and Tennessee Williams. The streets are filled with sidewalk cafes, open-air bars, legendary pubs, and world-class restaurants. Only in Key West would the sun shine brightest when it sets. Each day’s setting sun is celebrated and, sometimes, even applauded at Mallory Dock. Where artisans, musicians, and street performers pack the city pier as the sunsets shimmer over the Gulf of Mexico.
Galveston, Texas
Galveston is a port of departure for Western Caribbean and Bahamian cruises. Galveston has a combination of beaches, historical buildings, museums, and a waterpark. It is about 50 miles from Houston, Texas.
Miami, Florida
Miami is a southern departure port for Caribbean and Bahamian cruises. Miami has diverse shopping and the “South Beach” atmosphere. Nearby are Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park.
Port Canaveral, Florida
Port Canaveral is a homeport for Disney Cruise Lines. Kennedy Space Center can be found in Cape Canaveral, and it is just over an hour away from Walt Disney World. Cape Canaveral also has beaches to surf, deep-sea fishing, and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (bald eagles, manatees, alligators, and more).
Eastern Caribbean Ports of Call
Philipsburg, st. maarten.
St. Maarten is a unique destination in that the island is evenly split between France and the Netherlands. St. Maarten is a popular tourist destination known for its upbeat nightlife, local crafts, great shopping, and beautiful beaches. Because of the two different nationalities on the island, there are two different cultures to be discovered.
St. Thomas/St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands
St. Thomas was once populated by Dutch-owned sugar plantations and even by pirates, but now, it is a popular tropical tourist destination. Play golf, shop, sunbathe on white-sand beaches or swim in the warm waters. St. John, a short ride away, offers an underwater world that beckons snorkelers. St. John also has other forms of water recreation.
Tortola, British Virgin Islands
A historical place of pirate battles and adventure guests can now have their ocean adventures snorkeling and exploring the sea. Once a favorite haunt of Captain Blackbeard, vacationers from all over the world now come to explore this beautiful island.
New York, New York
The city that never sleeps! What a place to visit before or after your cruise. This port sees ships departing for the Bahamas, Canada, and the Caribbean. New York is a great place to extend your vacation with some sightseeing in the big apple.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
San Juan is the oldest city under the United States’ jurisdiction. San Juan has a warm climate and diverse geography that includes rain forests, deserts, and caves.
Southern Caribbean Ports of Call
Basseterre, st. kitts.
Basseterre is on the small volcanic island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. While St. Kitts has a lot to offer history buffs, it also has azure waters paired with white-sand beaches and rainforest, too.
Bridgetown, Barbados
Bridgetown is the capital and largest city of Barbados. Barbados is home to one of the only two working sugar windmills in the world. Besides historical objects and locations, Barbados also offers duty-free shopping and local cuisine.
Castries, St. Lucia
St. Lucia is a volcanic island in the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. St. Lucia offers duty-free shopping along with all the fun outdoor activities like beaches, National Rain Forest, Sulphur Springs (the only “drive-in volcano” in the world), and more.
Fort-de-France, Martinique
Find a charming mixture of the Caribbean and French cultures at this island destination. You can find gorgeous beaches, mountainous terrain, and fascinating cities with fantastic shopping and adorable cafès.
Kralendijk, Bonaire
This destination’s unique name means “coral reef” in Dutch. Kralendijk is the main port and capital city of Bonaire in the Netherland Antilles. This location offers some fantastic port adventures with Disney.
Oranjestad, Aruba
Aruba is a part of the Netherlands and features a unique mixture of terrain from sandy beaches and palm trees to an inland covered in cacti. All of this is found only 18 miles north of Venezuela.
Willemstad, Curacao
This Dutch island is beautiful. Here you can explore the city or find adventure in the deep blue sea with some of the best snorkeling experiences in the world.
St. John’s, Antigua
Antigua is the largest island of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. This island is where some of the “rich and famous” have summer homes. From Half Moon Bay for swimming and snorkeling to the lush rainforest, there is a lot to see and do in Antigua.
Port Canaveral is a homeport for Disney Cruise Lines. Kennedy Space Center can be found in Cape Canaveral, and it is just over an hour away from Walt Disney World . Cape Canaveral also has beaches to surf, deep-sea fishing, and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge (bald eagles, manatees, alligators, and more).

Making the Most of Your Disney Caribbean Cruise
Regardless of which itinerary you choose, here are some tips to enhance your Disney Cruise experience:
- Book excursions early: Popular shore excursions fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. We learned this the hard way on our first cruise and missed out on some experiences we were excited about.
- Take advantage of onboard activities: Disney Cruise Line offers world-class entertainment and activities for all ages. Don’t miss the Broadway-style shows, character meet-and-greets , and themed deck parties.
- Try rotational dining: Experience all the themed restaurants onboard for a variety of culinary delights. Our kids loved the interactive experiences at Animator’s Palate.
- Don’t miss the private islands: For our family, both Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay are highlights of Caribbean itineraries. These offer a perfect blend of relaxation and Disney magic.
- Consider concierge level: For a truly luxurious experience, splurge on concierge accommodations for added perks and personalized service. We did this for our anniversary cruise, and it was worth every penny.
- Pack smartly: Remember to pack Disney cruise essentials like sunscreen, beach gear, and any medication you might need. Also, don’t forget formal wear for special dinners!
- Use the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app: This app is invaluable for checking daily schedules, making reservations, and staying connected with your travel party onboard.
The Verdict: Eastern vs Western Caribbean Disney Cruises
After experiencing both Eastern and Western Caribbean Disney Cruises with my family, I can honestly say that you can’t go wrong with either choice. Both offer a perfect blend of Disney magic and Caribbean charm that will create lasting memories for your family.
If you’re drawn to the idea of island-hopping, experiencing diverse cultures, and indulging in some serious shopping, an Eastern Caribbean cruise might be your best bet. The opportunity to visit multiple countries in a single trip, combined with the chance to experience Disney’s new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, makes this an exciting option.
On the other hand, if you’re intrigued by ancient history, yearn for world-class snorkeling, and want to immerse yourself in vibrant Latin American culture, a Western Caribbean cruise could be the perfect choice. The mix of cultural experiences, natural wonders, and adventure activities makes this a great option for families who love to explore.
Ultimately, the best choice depends on your family’s interests, budget, and desired experiences. Whichever you choose, Disney’s legendary service, world-class entertainment, and attention to detail ensure an unforgettable vacation.
Now that you’re armed with the knowledge to choose between Eastern and Western Caribbean Disney Cruises, it’s time to set sail on your magical voyage!
