• "Deadweight Tonnage" (DWT) measures how much weight a cruise ship (or any of the marine vessel types) can carry safely. This a weighted sum of the vessel's cargo (incl provisions, passengers, crew), fuel, water (fresh and ballast), etc.
• "Displacement Tonnage" is how much weight the water that a cruise ship (any vessel) displaces when floating (the total weight of the ship / including its contents). Displacement is usually applied to the navy rather than commercial marine vessels. It is measured when the ship is loaded at full capacity.

One of the most confusing and time-consuming hurdles potential cruise passengers face is selecting a cruise ship. Some cruise lines have ships of all sizes and styles to choose from, and that can add to the challenge for first-timers. 

In addition to a cruise's itinerary and price, an important factor in finding a cruise that's right for you (and your family or companion or you alone) comes down to its size (how many passengers are on board), its ship class (explained below) and its overall category (luxury, excursion, mass market).

Figuring out the sizes of cruise ships

Back in the day, a big ship was one that could accommodate 2,000 passengers and up. Nowadays, many of the newest ships fall into a new “mega-ship“ category with space for more than 4,000 passengers. Royal Caribbean's newer ships, such as  Symphony of the Seas and Harmony of the Seas , hold more than 5,000 passengers at double occupancy and more than 6,000 at full capacity. On the other end of the spectrum, there are smaller, boutique ships that hold fewer than 250 passengers. Many of these are expedition ships that explore exotic locations such as the Galapagos or Antarctica . 

There is no universal yardstick for ship size, but here's how we break it down at Cruiseable: 

• Intimate (boutique): Up to 250 passengers (examples: SeaDream I , Celebrity Xpedition )
• Small : 250 to 750 (examples: Wind Surf (photo at top),  Azamara Journey ,  Seven Seas Mariner ) 
• Medium (mid-size): 750 to 1,750 (examples: Holland America's Zaandam , Oceania's Marina )
• Large : 1,750 to 4,000 (examples: Island Princess , Celebrity Solstice )
• Mega-ship : 4,000+ (examples: Oasis of the Seas , Norwegian Epic )

Luxury ships generally fall in the small and medium categories. Some sites determine size by gross registered tonnage (a measurement of space on board, not weight), and Cruiseable's  Ship Discovery Tool lets you sort 400+ ships to see which ships are about the same size.

The larger the ship, the more likely it will be that it has multiple pools, larger fitness centers, bigger theaters, multiple dining venues and entertainment venues. The smaller the ship, the more likely it will be that you'll never have to fight the crowds and your itineraries will take you to smaller, more out-of-the-way ports. In general, smaller ships cost more, and almost all luxury ships fall into the small or mid-size range. 

Pay attention to a ship's class 

Did you know that a ship class refers to a group of ships of a similar design? In cruise lingo, they are known as “sisters.”

Royal Caribbean has seven ship classes: Quantum, Oasis, Freedom, Voyager, Radiance, Vision and Sovereign. The reason that this is important to those of you researching cruises is that not all features are found on all ships. For example, Harmony of the Seas  has no NorthStar viewing pod, iFly sky-dive simulator or bumper cars in the SeaPlex. That's because she's part of the Oasis class of ships, not the Quantum class. 

Don't overcomplicate it 

A final word of advice: Don't make your decision-making harder than it needs to be. Only certain size ships ( Panamax ) fit through the Panama Canal — the cruise lines certainly know which ones, so you just need to decide if you want to sail through this modern wonder of the world. Mid-size and large ships won't fit through the Corinth Canal in the Aegean Sea, and behemoth mega-ships won't be sailing through Venice or into the caldera of Santorini.

Chart: See the Dramatic Rise in the Size of Cruise Ships

How much larger have cruise ships become? Until you are standing next to a modern cruise ship, it’s hard to appreciate just how massive they actually are.

Many times they are called floating cities. That’s not just a cute phrase. It’s accurate. The largest cruise ship in the world — Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas — can hold more than 7,000 passengers and 2,300 crew. That’s nearly 10,000 people.

Meanwhile, the amenities onboard include everything you need to run a city of that size, from more than 20 places to get a bite to eat to medical facilities, from laundry facilities to storefronts.

Growing in Size Over the Years

Gone are the days where a cruise ship was designed simply to be the vessel to get you from port to port. Today, the cruise ship is the destination.

For years there’s been an arms race when it comes to ships. The major cruise lines — including Carnival , Royal Caribbean , and Norwegian — have competed to create ships that not only push their own fleets bigger, but also put them on par with their rivals.

That’s led to the largest cruise ships the world has ever seen and a steady increase in average size over time.

Consider that from 1990 until 2000, most cruise new ships built were in the 70,000-80,000 gross ton range. (Gross tonnage is a standard measure of a ship’s size.) The average size of all new ships during this time from the major cruise lines was 80,000 gross tons.

But since then the size of ships has soared.

From 2015 until today, the average gross tonnage of a new cruise ship from the major cruise lines is 170,435 gross tons — more than twice the size of a ship built during the 1990s. That includes the Icon of the Seas, which comes in at a staggering 250,800 gross tons.

Take a look at just how dramatic the increase in cruise ship size has been during the past decades:

As you can see from the chart, when it comes to size, all the cruise lines continue to move toward larger ships. Every single cruise line has dramatically increased in size over the past several decades.

However, Royal Caribbean is the line that pushes the envelope the most when it comes to building bigger ships.

The line of ships at the top of the chart represent the cruise line's Oasis class of ships and then its Icon class, which are now the biggest in the world. Oasis first launched in 2009, and the ship within this class are all at least 225,000 gross tons. Icon class debuted in 2024 with Icon of the Seas, which is roughly 250,000 gross tons.

That's about three times the size of the average ship built in the 1990s .

Why Cruise Ships Continue to Get Bigger

So why do cruise ships continue to get larger? For cruise companies and passengers, there are a number of benefits to larger cruise ships.

For passengers, larger ships simply mean more options. With more space comes more restaurants, public areas, activities, and cabin types.

Consider Carnival's Jubilee. The new mega-liner debuted at the end of 2023, and will have more than 20 spots to eat on board. That's a long way from just having a buffet, dining room and maybe another restaurant or two like you would have found on much older cruise ships.

Norwegian's Breakaway-Plus class of ships like Norwegian Encore have the space to include a number of activities that were unheard of just a few years ago. This includes laser-tag arenas, virtual reality areas, and even go-kart tracks at sea.

For cruise lines, larger ships bring economies of scale come into play. Put simply, it's much cheaper for a cruise line to build and operate one 6,000 person cruise ship than two ships with 3,000 people sailing. It requires less staff, and less cost to build a single large ship than two smaller ones.

With more space, there are also more chances to earn money from passengers. As mentioned by Travel Weekly , "large ships have far greater potential for onboard revenue than smaller ones, with more space for bars, restaurants, and bigger casinos and spas."

Finally, cruise ships act as a marketing tool for the cruise line.

With each new ship comes new media coverage and attention to the ship and the line. In the race to gather attention, bigger and more extravagant lead the way to gather the imagination of potential passengers. There's a very good reason that you never see older ships in the advertisements from the cruise lines.

Limits on Cruise Ship Size

Given the current trend, you might think that cruise ships will continue to increase in size in the future. That's likely not the case. There does come a point to where size becomes a negative instead of a benefit.

Consider that the Oasis of the Seas -- the first of the largest Oasis-class vessels built by Royal Caribbean -- was built in 2009, more than a decade ago. Since then, it's had several sister ships built, that have been marginally larger at most. Icon of the Sea is larger on a tonnage basis, but only by about 6%

Instead, at least for now, this seems to be the upper limit for how large cruise ships will become. As ships get larger, so too do the logistical issues that come with them. Namely, not every port of call can handle the size and scale of the largest vessels.

For example, the Port of Tampa Bay simply can't have the largest cruise ships dock because the height of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge at the entrance to the bay is too low.

The Port of Galveston (the busiest cruise port outside of Florida) now welcomes Oasis-class ships, but first had to work with Royal Caribbean to build an entirely new terminal that could accommodate ships of that size.

But while the limit on the size of ships may have maxed out for now, there is still room for more vessels to be built up to current standards. Of the cruise ships included on our chart above, about a third of them are less than 100,000 gross tons.

For those that enjoy the older and smaller ships, the trend is definitely not in your favor.

At High Seas Cruising, we typically use gross tonnage when comparing the size of cruise ships. We prefer gross tonnage as a comparison tool because it considers more factors than just the length or width.

How Measurements Tell Us the Scale of Ships

Surprisingly, most medium and large cruise ships (150,000 GT to 225,000+ GT) have a length right around 1,000 feet (300 meters). The reason cruise ships aren’t built longer is that cruise ships sail to many ports around the world. These massive vessels must dock and maneuver in ports that don’t require frequent upgrades and expansions.

The difference between medium and large cruise ships primarily comes from the differences in height and width.

While cruise ships can’t increase in length much beyond 1,000 feet, they can be taller and broader, resulting in an exponential growth in internal volume.

For instance, while today’s largest cruise ship is only 20% longer than the Titanic. Yet the largest cruise ships in the world are five times larger when measuring gross tonnage.

The larger internal volume, or gross tonnage, means cruise ships can add more passengers, activities, amenities, and facilities to the vessel.

Passenger capacity is another standard measurement for comparing cruise ships. However, it is essential to consider two different measures of guest capacity: double occupancy and maximum capacity.

A cruise ship rarely sails at maximum capacity. Every stateroom must be filled with the maximum number of occupants for the vessel to reach full capacity. Although cruise lines would love to fill every bed on a ship, it’s nearly impossible.

Consider when a family of three books a cabin with a four-passenger capacity. Or a solo traveler booked in a standard two-guest stateroom.

Many cruise lines use double occupancy to measure passenger capacity for the above. Double occupancy would be the ship’s passenger capacity if every cabin had two people.

Further, while there is some correlation between the gross volume of a ship and its passenger capacity, it’s not a consistent measurement of size.

For example, a small ship (less than 800 ft in length) may have a high passenger capacity if every guest sleeps in a bunk bed. At the same time, a large vessel (over 1000 ft in length) may have a lower passenger capacity if every passenger gets a private suite.

The examples above are extreme, but they show why passenger capacity isn’t the best way to compare ships.

For a real example, consider that Dream Cruises’ Global Dream is slightly smaller by gross tonnage than Royal Caribbeans’ famous Oasis of the Seas ships. Still, it has a maximum guest capacity of over 40% greater.

Unsurprisingly, our preferred measure of cruise ship size is gross tonnage.

What is the biggest Royal Caribbean ship?

The biggest Royal Caribbean cruise ship is the just-unveiled Icon of the Seas . Measuring 248,663 gross tons, it's not only the biggest Royal Caribbean ship but also the biggest cruise ship ever built by any line. It's loaded with more bars, restaurants, theaters and deck-top attractions than you'll find on any other ship at sea.

Icon of the Seas is the first in a new series of ships at Royal Caribbean that are bigger than anything seen before. The series is called the Icon Class. A second ship in the Icon Class, Star of the Seas , is due to debut in 2025.

How big is Icon of the Seas?

At 248,663 gross tons, Icon of the Seas is more than 6% larger than Royal Caribbean's 1-year-old Wonder of the Seas , which previously was the biggest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet (and the biggest ship operated by any line). Icon of the Seas can carry up to 7,600 passengers — a new record for a passenger ship. That's about 7% higher than the maximum capacity of Wonder of the Seas, which can hold up to 7,084 passengers.

The bigger passenger capacity is partly due to the ship's greater focus on family travelers. Icon of the Seas was built with a lot more cabins that have plenty of extra bunks to accommodate families with many children. It also has more amenities geared toward families. This includes a new-for-the-line outdoor "neighborhood" called Surfside dedicated to families with young children.

What is the smallest Royal Caribbean ship?

The smallest Royal Caribbean cruise ship is Grandeur of the Seas. Measuring just 73,817 tons, it's just a third the size of Icon of the Seas.

Grandeur of the Seas dates to 1996, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 28 years old, it's the oldest vessel in the Royal Caribbean fleet and probably will be phased out sometime in the next few years.

Except for a rock climbing wall, Grandeur of the Seas has none of the gee-whiz Royal Caribbean top-deck attractions found on newer Royal Caribbean vessels, such as skydiving simulators and giant water parks. For the most part, its top deck is lined with pools, whirlpools and sunning areas, as is typical for ships built in the 1990s.

That said, Grandeur of the Seas has a loyal following among Royal Caribbean fans who prefer smaller and more intimate ships.

Royal Caribbean has hinted of late that it might build a new series of smaller ships that could replace Grandeur of the Seas and other older small vessels in the line's fleet.

Are bigger Royal Caribbean ships coming?

Royal Caribbean currently has three new cruise ships on order, all of which will be among its biggest cruise ships ever — if not the biggest.

The ships on order include two more vessels in the line's Icon Class series that will be similar to Icon of the Seas. They're on order from a shipyard for delivery in 2025 and 2026, respectively. Both ships are expected to be as big or bigger than Icon of the Seas.

Royal Caribbean also has one more ship in its popular Oasis Class series on order for delivery in 2028.

Launched in 2009 with the debut of Oasis of the Seas, the Oasis-class ships have dominated the world of mega-size cruise ships since that year. At the time the class began rolling out, the vessels were around 40% bigger than the next-biggest cruise ships, and they have continued to be among the biggest and most amenity-laden ships in the world ever since.

The new Oasis Class vessel, which is as-yet unnamed, is expected to be roughly the same size as Utopia of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's second-biggest cruise ship. But it'll be smaller than the line's biggest ship, Icon of the Seas.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Royal Caribbean ships?

Royal Caribbean's biggest ships have room for many more onboard venues and attractions than Royal Caribbean's older ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big, bustling megaresort experience to a stay at a smaller resort.

On Royal Caribbean's biggest Oasis-class vessels, for instance, you'll find three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on their top decks. Inside the vessels, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine — plus huge casinos, spas and showrooms with Broadway-style shows. They even have indoor ice skating rinks.

The line's new Icon of the Seas has a similar array of amenities.

Royal Caribbean's smallest ships are a half to a third smaller than the Oasis Class and Icon Class vessels and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. While Oasis Class and Icon Class ships can hold more than 5,400 passengers at double occupancy, the line's four oldest vessels (known as the Vision class) are only designed to carry about 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Royal Caribbean's smallest ships are a good choice for someone who wants to try Royal Caribbean but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet thus appeal to a subset of Royal Caribbean fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive on a per-day basis for cruisers.

Additionally, because of their size, the smallest Royal Caribbean ships can operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Icon of the Seas.

World’s Largest Cruise Ship

Okay, so what is the World’s Largest Cruise Ship?  As of 2023, the world’s largest cruise ship is the  Wonder of the Seas . It has a gross tonnage of 236,857, is 362 metres (1,188 ft) long, 64 metres (210 ft) wide, and holds up to 6,988 passengers. In 2022, Royal Carribean launchedThe Wonder of the Seas. The  Wonder of the Seas  can accommodate up to 7,084 guests in 2,867 staterooms and carries as many as 2,204 crew members.  However, companies continue to build new and larger ships. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to check for the latest information from reputable sources. See below to see new ships scheduled to finish in 2024.

Cruise Ship Size Comparisons Compared to Famous Ships

When you think of the most famous ships what names come to mind?  Unfortunately, the RMS Titanic, but also ships like the Queen Mary.  When comparing today’s largest cruise ships to the Titanic and other famous ships like the Queen Mary, there are significant differences in various aspects.

Here’s a comparison of the Titanic and the Queen Mary:

• Length : The Queen Mary is approximately 15% longer than the Titanic, measuring 310 meters (1,017 feet) compared to the Titanic’s 269 meters (883 feet).
• Width : The Queen Mary is about 28% wider than the Titanic, with a beam width of 36 meters (118 feet) compared to the Titanic’s 28 meters (92 feet).
• Height and Decks : The Queen Mary is only 3% taller than the Titanic, measuring 55 meters (180 feet) with an additional 3 passenger deck.
• Gross Tonnage : The Queen Mary had almost double the gross tonnage of the Titanic, with 80,000 GT compared to the Titanic’s 46,000 GT.

However, it’s worth noting that modern day average cruise ship has surpassed the size of both the Titanic and the Queen Mary. For example, as previously stated, Royal Caribbean’s “Wonder of the Seas” measures approximately 362 meters (1,188 feet) in length and has 18 decks. This makes it twice as long and wider than the Titanic.

Different Cruise Lines have approached cruise ship size comparisons differently. Royal Caribbean has clearly staked out the lead in the largest cruise ship size comparisons. Here are the specifics:

Royal Caribbean Oasis-Class Ships

The Wonder of the Seas is the biggest, but it is not alone in the world of Mega-Ships.  Royal Caribbean’s family of Oasis Class Ships are all pretty formidable. We sailed on the Harmony of the Seas, not quite as big, but a sister ship to the Wonder of the Seas.  Royal Caribbean International has several mega-ships, including the  Symphony of the Seas ,  Harmony of the Seas ,  Oasis of the Seas , and  Allure of the Seas.  

Large Cruise Ships to Be Introduced in 2024

In 2024 Wonder of the Seas will no longer be the biggest ship on the seas, but will be surpassed by two ships planning their maiden voyage in 2024: The  Utopia of the Seas  and The  Icon of the Seas .

The Utopia of the Seas will actually have slightly less passenger capacity but will have a larger gross tonnage.  It will be the last of the Oasis-Class ships. The  Oasis Class  ships have been the biggest cruise ships in the world since the debut of  Oasis of the Seas  in 2009.  The Oasis Class has been seen as the pinnacle of cruise ship design for over ten years. These mega-ships have maximum capacities ranging from 6,680 to 6,988 guests. 

The  Icon of the Seas  will be in a new class, the Icon Class.  The  Icon Class  and the  Oasis Class  are two different classes of ships operated by Royal Caribbean. The  Icon Class  will become Royal Caribbean’s largest class of cruise ships and can hold up to 7,600 guests at maximum capacity. The first ship in this class,  Icon of the Seas , is set to debut in January 2024. The Icon Class is known for being the first Royal Caribbean ship to feature a parabolic bow design, which aids stability and provides smoother motion.

In terms of size, the Icon-class ships are bigger than the Oasis-class ships. For example,  Icon of the Seas  is around 5% bigger than the biggest Oasis-class ship in terms of overall volume (gross tonnage) and around 7% larger in terms of total capacity (passengers and crew).  Following is a table of Royal Carribean’s very large mega-size cruise ships:

How Other Cruise Lines’ Ships Compare in Size to the Wonder of the Seas

Other Cruise Lines that have mega-size cruise ships in the over 6000 passenger capacity category are primary focused on non-us passengers.  The exception is Carnival, which has two ships in this super mega-ship category.

Royal Caribbean’s Competitors with Large Cruise Ships

  Royal Carribean  has cleared staked out the super-sized ships as their calling card. It is interesting to note, that none of  Royal Caribbean’s  main competitors ( Princess Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland American, Viking and Virgin Voyages ) have created a mega-size ship in the over 6000 passenger capacity category.  The main exception is Carnival which has ships in the 6000+ passenger category. The reason these cruise lines are not building the enormous ships is most likely because they are competing for a passenger looking for a different kind of service.

However, some of Royal Caribbean International’s competitors ( Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings ,  Princess Cruises ,  Celebrity Cruises , and  Viking Cruises)  are competing in the 5000+ passenger mega-sized cruise ship category. These companies are also well-known cruise lines that offer a variety of experiences to their passengers. Here are some details about these cruise lines and their mega-size ships:

• Celebrity Cruises : Is owned by Royal Caribbean and operate a fleet of stylish ships that cater to discerning travelers. The  C elebrity Reflection  is one of their mega-ships, with 1,523 cabins and suites. They are known for their modern luxury experience, offering upscale amenities, gourmet dining options, and personalized service. 
• Virgin Voyages : Their first ship, the  Scarlet Lady , is an adults-only, all-inclusive cruise ship with over 1,500 cabins.  Viking Cruises  is a company providing river and ocean cruises. They focus on offering destination-focused itineraries that immerse passengers in the local culture and history. Viking Cruises is known for its elegant ships, all-veranda staterooms, and inclusive pricing.
• Princess Cruises : One of their mega-ships is the  Enchanted Princess , which has received positive reviews for its gorgeous design and health protocols. They are known for their elegant ships and exceptional service. Princess Cruises offers a wide range of itineraries, including destinations around the world.
• Norwegian Cruise Line : They also operate mega-ships, but specific details about their ships were not available.  They operate several cruise lines, including Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, and Regent Seven Seas Cruises. What Constrains the Size of a Cruise Ship?

Cruise ships have a maximum length of around 1,200 feet. However, they can compensate for this limitation by increasing their height and breadth, resulting in a significant growth in internal volume. However, cruise lines must strike a balance between size and customer satisfaction to ensure an enjoyable experience for passengers.

Larger ships offer more amenities, such as additional restaurants, bars, lounges, event venues, and activities. Managing larger vessels has some challenges. This includes docking at ports that may not be able to accommodate them and navigating through narrow waterways.

• Easy to Navigate : Smaller cruise ships are easier to navigate due to their size and typically more sensible layout. You won’t need days to get familiar with the ship’s layout, and you’ll always know how to get to your desired location.
• Less Walking and More Doing : On smaller ships, you’ll spend less time walking long corridors and more time enjoying the ship’s amenities and activities. You can easily reach any destination on the ship within minutes.
• Intimate Atmosphere : Smaller ships have fewer passengers and crew members, creating a more intimate atmosphere where you have a better opportunity to get to know fellow passengers, swap stories, and make lasting friendships.
• Quality Over Quantity : Smaller ships often prioritize quality over quantity when it comes to dining options and public spaces. You’ll find a relaxed atmosphere with fewer crowds and more personalized service.

Where Can Small and Mid-size Ships Go Where Larger Ships Can’t Go?

• Less Crowded Ports : Smaller ships can visit ports that are less crowded, allowing for a more intimate experience with the local culture and attractions. These ports may include lesser-known destinations in regions such as the Baltic Sea, the Adriatic Sea, and the Caribbean . .

Our Preference for Ship Size and Other Factors

We have sailed on Mega-sized ships (Harmony of the Seas), Large size ships (Celebrity Edge and Beyond) Medium size ships (Holland American Nieuw Amsterdam, Celebrity Millennium, and Crystal Serenity) and Small Size Ships (Windstar Star Breeze and Star Pride).  Having sailed on mega, large, medium and small sized cruise ships, we can honestly say that you can enjoy yourself on any kind of cruise ship.  

However, we have personally found that we enjoy ourselves better on the mid-size and smaller size ships.  We recognize that we will not get “Broadway-style” performances on the smaller ships.  But because of the intimacy of the smaller ships, what we will get is a better chance to meet new people and share our experiences.  Also, the smaller ships can clearly go where the big ships can’t.

World’s largest cruise ship – five times the size of Titanic – sets sail

The world’s largest cruise ship, Royal Caribbean ’s Icon of the Seas, set sail for the first time on Saturday (27 January).

It has overtaken sister ship Wonder of the Seas to claim the title. Royal Caribbean president Jason Liberty described the new vessel as the “ biggest, baddest ship on the planet ” – it is longer than the Eiffel Tower.

Icon of the Seas has 18 passenger decks, seven swimming pools and over 40 restaurants and bars on board. It is able to hold 5,610 passengers on board (at double occupancy) and has a gross tonnage of 250,800.

The luxury ship also boasts eight “neighbourhoods” on board, each with its own distinct experiences, entertainment and food and drink options. With an eye on breaking records, these neighbourhoods hold a number of firsts: Thrill Island features the largest cruise ship water park, the first open free-fall slide at sea and a drop slide that is the industry’s tallest.

The ship also features Chill Island, with ocean-view pools and a frozen cocktail bar, and The Hideaway, home to the first suspended infinity pool at sea, surrounded by a multi-level sun terrace complete with whirlpools and a beach bar.

Other neighbourhoods include The Hideaway, Surfside and Aquadome, with its own AquaTheater.

The vessel is family-focused, with the introductions of the new Family Infinite Balcony and the Surfside Family Suite, as well as the Ultimate Family Townhouse, complete with a mailbox and signature white picket fence.

Icon of the Seas will sail seven-night cruises all year round from Miami, with every itinerary stopping at CocoCay in the Bahamas. It will be the first ship by the company with fuel cell technology, powered by liquified natural gas (clean burning fuel), making it the company’s most sustainable ship to date – though Royal Caribbean came in second place on Friends of the Earth’s list of polluters in the cruise industry in 2022.
