What to Wear on a Carnival Cruise

You’ll find that on Carnival Cruise what to wear is a bit more casual and fun than on other cruise lines. When you’re on Carnival what to pack for day and evening doesn’t need to be super fancy unless you want to get dressed up. There are a few Carnival Cruise dress code rules such as no shorts, flip-flops, cut-off/ripped jeans, caps or sleeveless shirts for men for the main dining room and no bathing suits or bare feet in the buffet.

Ideas for Carnival Cruise outfits:

• Cruise casual day – Around the ship, you can wear bathings suits + coverups, shorts & tees, sundresses, basically any comfortable casual clothes.
• Cruise casual evening – On non-formal nights in the main dining area you can wear sundresses, jeans & a nice tunic or vest top for women or short-sleeved shirt for men, or chinos and a polo shirt. You might want to plan on having one all white outfit as there’s often a white party one night.
• Cruise elegant – If you’re wondering what to wear on formal night on Carnival Cruise you should picture yourself going out for a nice dinner at the minimum. You can wear anything from a nice sundress, up to a a full evening dress, but a cocktail dress is ideal. For men, chinos and a button down shirt at a minimum, up to a full tuxedo, but a sport coat and tie are ideal.

What to Pack for a Carnival Cruise

This list of what to bring on a Carnival Cruise will cover your for a 7 day cruise. If you’re on a slightly longer or shorter cruise, you can adjust the number of tops, dresses and underwear up or down to suit.

Carnival Cruise Luggage Tips

Here are a few tips on the luggage you can bring on your Carnival Cruise:

• On your Carnival Cruise luggage should be limited to one suitcase per person for 3-5 day cruises and two suitcases per person for 6+ day cruises. However, tt is recommended that you only bring one suitcase per person.
• Each suitcase needs to be under 50 lbs.
• Luggage should be 16″ deep by 24″ wide at a maximum but length is not restricted.
• Checked luggage needs to be unlocked so store all valuables in your carry on.
• Order some Carnival Cruise luggage tags. It’s more secure than just stapling them on so less chance your bag will go missing.
• Make sure your suitcase is well labelled and distinctive from other cruisers. A good way to do this is with ribbons or straps. Don’t forget to add your name, address and phone number to your luggage.

Are you going on a Carnival cruise and wondering what to pack? Cruise vacations are different from other holidays, and it’s important to know what to bring, as well as what to leave at home.

Your Carnival cruise packing list should include cruise outfits to wear on casual sea days and evenings, as well as formal nights if you enjoy dressing up. It’s also a good idea to pack a few cruise travel gadgets for your cruise ship and cabin, as well as for shore excursions .

Carnival Cruise Packing List

This cruise packing list is geared mainly towards Caribbean or warm weather Carnival cruises. However it can be easily adapted to other itineraries.

1. Government ID &/or Passports

The most important things to pack for your Carnival cruise are your government ID (driver’s license) and passport if applicable.

It’s a good idea to use a  passport wallet holder to keep organized. Here are 2 great options.

This one is so practical when travelling with a family, and will ensure that you don’t make the mistake of packing your passport in your luggage. This can result in being unable to board your cruise ship.

Passport Holder

This passport holder is great for a single passport, is RFID protected and includes slots for credit cards and cash.

2. Travel Documents

Make sure to have your cruise and travel documents handy. This includes cruise or airline boarding passes, as well as shuttles or shore excursion reservations. 

3. Proof of Vaccine & Test Results (no longer required for most cruises)

Make sure to check your cruise reservation and communication from Carnival or your travel agent , for your current travel requirements.

Don’t forget to print out your Royal Caribbean cruise ship luggage tags and attach them to your luggage on embarkation day .

5. Carry On Bag for Embarkation Day

Along with your checked luggage, be sure to pack a carry on bag with your first day essentials for embarkation day.

Some items to pack include medication , valuables, electronics and a bathing suit and cover up . It can take several hours until you get your luggage delivered to your cabin, so bringing on the items you may need is important.

6. Credit Card

It’s a good idea to bring along at least one credit card when you travel. Even if you don’t plan to use it, a credit card is good for emergencies and there is it’s required.

7. Small Bills

Bring along some $1, $5 and $10 dollar bills on your cruise. I like to have some small bills handy from the time we get to the cruise terminal at embarkation to tip the porters, as well as to use for tipping for room service once on board.

It can be handy to have cash on hand when shopping for souvenirs at cruise ports as well.

8. Cruise Outfits

Carnival cruises are pretty fun and casual, so you don’t have to over stress about what to wear on a cruise .

Plan on relaxed clothing for daytime, like shorts, t-shirts or tank top, or a sundress for ladies. On a Caribbean cruise , you’ll likely spend a lot of time in a swimsuit and flip flops!

In the evening, you’ll need some cruise outfits for the dining room. Most nights the dress code will be casual or smart casual.

As an example, for men this can be a polo style shirt with pants or jeans. For ladies a casual dress or a pair of pants or dark jeans with a pretty top is perfect.

9. Formal Wear (optional)

If you love to dress up or you have a special occasion to celebrate, you can wear elegant attire on Carnival’s formal night.

In practice, formal night and dressing in an evening gown, suit or tuxedo is optional. However, dressing up a little more than usual is a nice idea (think beautiful family photos).

10. Theme Night Outfits

Carnival brings the fun with theme nights on short and longer cruises. You can plan to bring theme outfits if you want to participate.

2-5 nights cruises have an 80s Rock’n’Glow Deck Party. Cruises 6 nights and longer usually have a Mexican Mega Deck Party, 80s Rock’n’Glow Deck Party and a Caribbean/Island theme night in the main dining room.

When making your cruise packing list, consider bringing an 80’s costume and even a Hawaiian shirt for an island theme.

11. Carry On Bag for Embarkation

Pack a carry on bag for the first day of your cruise. On embarkation day , it will take a few hours for your luggage to be delivered to your cabin.

Make sure to pack your first day essentials in your carry on bag including any medication, sunscreen and a bathing suit, and valuables.

12. Packing Cubes

Keep organized by using packing cubes for your cruise. They make it so much easier to unpack quickly once you get to your cruise cabin.

13. Lanyards

Cruise ship lanyards are a very useful cruise accessory! As someone who has misplaced my cruise card on past cruises a lot, this is a must for me in recent years.

13. Bottle of Wine or Champagne

Carnival allows you to bring one bottle of wine or champagne per person on embarkation day in your carry on bag.

This can be a good way to save money on your cruise if you are a light drinker and don’t want to buy the Cheers beverage package.

Note – a corkage fee is charged if you drink the wine in the dining room, restaurant or bar.

14. Non-Alcoholic Beverages (small amount)

Carnival cruise passengers are able to bring a small amount of non-alcoholic beverages on board on embarkation day. The soda, juice or energy drinks must be in cans or carton (no plastic and glass bottles).

If you’d like to have bottles of water, Carnival has a reasonably priced water bottle packages available for purchase online before your cruise.

15. Reusable Water Bottle

Many cruisers like to bring a refillable water bottle for water and other beverages. Water is safe to drink on a Carnival cruise ship.

16. Toiletries

If you’re flying to the cruise port, it’s a good idea to bring your toiletries for your cruise in small travel size bottles and containers.

Don’t forget to pack make up, personal care items and feminine hygiene products if needed.

17. Cell Phone

Cell phones are not a necessity, but these days all cruise lines use an app onboard as well as pre-cruise. It’s handy to have a smart phone, even if you don’t buy a cruise ship internet package.

At the very least, you’ll likely take photos with your cell phone.

18. Medication

Your Carnival cruise packing list should include prescription and over the counter medication. When traveling, it’s a good idea to bring 2 extra weeks of prescription medication.

19. Sunscreen

Make sure to bring sunscreen. If you’re going on a Caribbean cruise , it’s a good idea to pack reef friendly sunscreen . There are many cruise ports destinations that now require reef safe sunscreen and can issue fines.

20. Aloe Vera

With sea days and beach days, sunburns can happen on a cruise. Make sure to have some aloe vera in case you need sunburn relief!

21. Lip Balm with SPF

Lips can get burned and swollen in the hot sun. Be sure to bring lip balm with SPF for all family members.

22. Swimsuit

Whether you’re on a Bermuda cruise or Alaska cruise, you’ll want to pack at least one bathing suit. For hot weather cruises, packing 2-3 bathing suits for a 7 day cruise is ideal.

23. Swimsuit Cover Up

Make sure to pack a bathing suit cover up for the pool and hot tub on the lido deck, as well shore excursions .

24. Flip Flops

You’ll need a few pairs of shoes for a cruise . Don’t forget to pack a pair of flip flops .

25. Closed Toe Shoes or Sneakers

Closed toe shoes are a must to pack for a Carnival cruise. If you’d like to do some of the amazing activities onboard, many will require closed toe shoes.

27. Shawl or Pashmina

The air conditioning can be cool in the dining room on your cruise, so it’s good to have a shawl, scarf, or pashmina to cover up your shoulders.

29. Motion Sickness Medication

If this is your first cruise, make sure to be prepared for motion sickness just in case. These are some of the best things to bring on your cruise to prevent and deal with seasickness .

Most Carnival cruise cabins won’t have many electric outlets or USB’s. Bring along a non-surge protected power bar.

Things You Can’t Bring on a Carnival Cruise

A Carnival cruise packing list wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t let you know the things not to pack for your cruise. For safety reasons, many of these things are prohibited on a cruise ship .

If you bring these items, they’ll likely be confiscated by crew members.

Here’s a quick list:

• Candles or any item with an open flame
• Irons and clothes steamers
• Appliances with the exception of curling irons and hair straighteners

How much luggage can I bring?

To help you plan, we suggest you limit your luggage to a maximum of one bag per person if you’re travelling on a cruise of 3-5 nights, and to no more than two bags per person, for cruises of 6 days or longer.

In addition, you must personally carry-on any boarding documentation (passports, Visas, I.D), valuables, medications and any items which require special handling.

To fit neatly in your stateroom, each bag should be no bigger than 140cm x 60cm x 40cm. Each checked suit case and carry-on suit case should not weigh more than 32kg.

Please note that airlines may have different luggage restrictions.

12 items you should always pack in your cruise carry-on bag

When you board a cruise ship, the items you bring with you in your carry-on might be the only possessions you can access for the entire first afternoon you're on board.

Why? Typically, when you arrive at the pier, you give your larger suitcases to the porters, who bring guest luggage on board en masse for the crew to deliver to your cabin door. Your bags might not arrive until later in the day — or even that evening — especially if you're on a larger cruise ship carrying six or seven thousand passengers.

If you're a smart cruiser, you carry on everything you need for check-in and the first day on board — plus emergencies. It's better to come prepared, so you can make the most of those first hours on the ship, either relaxing by the pool or enjoying the ship's public spaces. Plus, should the unthinkable happen and your luggage never arrives, you'll be as prepared as possible.

Travel documents, passport and ID

It's crucial to have all your boarding documents organized in a wallet-style case or in a clear or manila folder that's easily accessible when you arrive at the cruise terminal. The check-in process should be mostly seamless, so you don't want to be fidgeting around looking for everything when it's your turn to step up to the counter.

You should also keep your passport or another form of ID, such as a birth certificate and driver's license, as required by your cruise line, with your cruise documents, as you'll need to show those at check-in.

Other documents you'll want to carry on to avoid misplacing include your travel insurance information (especially the phone number for emergencies) and confirmations of any restaurant reservations and tour bookings you made through the ship or independently.

Paper copies are helpful backups, especially when Wi-Fi is spotty, or your phone runs out of juice.

Medications, vitamins or supplements

If you or your family members take any regular prescription medications, vitamins or supplements, pack them in your carry-on bag. Even if you don't need them for the first 24 hours of your cruise, you don't want to risk losing them and going without them for the entire trip.

You should also consider putting together an emergency kit that includes pain relievers, antacids, bandages and other over-the-counter drugstore items for unexpected embarkation-day ailments. If you're prone to seasickness , you'll also want access to Dramamine, your motion sickness patches or Sea-Bands in case your luggage is delayed until after you set sail.

The shops on the ship won't open until after sailaway, and they might not have everything you need. (When they do, get ready for sticker-shock prices.) In that case, it's a good idea to pack a few extra meds for that unexpected headache or mild case of heartburn.

Cruise lanyard

If you prefer carrying your room key around the ship in a lanyard , toss one in your carry-on bag to put on and wear as soon as you receive your cruise card. You'll be ready to purchase cocktails, gelato, specialty coffees and other items around the ship without fumbling in your pockets for the card. You'll also be less likely to lose your card while you're juggling your carry-on luggage, cruise documents, phone and other items in the terminal.

Lanyards are a great idea for cruising kids, who aren't used to carrying around a wallet or ID. They'll need their cruise card handy to check in and out of the kids club and to get into your cabin when they run ahead.

A bottle of wine and a 12-pack of soda

Most cruise line alcohol policies permit you to bring Champagne or wine on board the ship. If allowed, pack a special bottle or two in your carry-on bag. Once you're in your cabin, you can request an ice bucket and ice from your cabin steward, so you can chill a bottle of bubbly just in time for sailaway. (Beware of corkage fees on some lines if you'd rather bring your special bottle to dinner.)

For example, Holland America allows you to bring an unspecified but limited number of wine or Champagne bottles on board for your cruise. There is a corkage fee applied to each bottle. Royal Caribbean has a two-bottle maximum for wine and Champagne — with no corkage fee if you imbibe in your cabin.

A few lines also let you bring on a reasonable amount of bottled water, soda or other nonalcoholic beverages in sealed packages. Typically, they ask that you carry these items on board with you.

Holland America permits a limited amount of drinking water in cans or cartons, but no soda or energy drinks. Plastic bottles are not permitted on the ship. If you're sailing with Royal Caribbean, you can bring a 12-pack of nonalcoholic beverages (in cans, cartons or bottles) on board in your carry-on luggage. Carnival Cruise Line 's policy is nearly identical to Royal Caribbean's — except only cans and cartons, not bottles, are allowed.

Poolside essentials

If your vacation goals are to relax, catch some rays and sip tropical drinks poolside for the next week or more, then have those pool items ready to go once you're on board. You might even bring a lightweight beach bag or tote filled with pool essentials such as your swimsuit, sunglasses, a cover-up, a collapsible straw hat, a travel-size bottle of sunscreen, flip-flops and that good book you've wanted to read. Towels are provided on board, so no need to bring your own.

Workout gear and a set of headphones

If you're ready to stretch your legs after a long flight and get in some exercise time at the gym , pack a pair of athletic shoes, socks and workout gear in the bag you bring on the ship. Don't forget to pack a set of headphones to listen to your favorite tunes on your smartphone while running on the treadmill or lifting weights.

If you're cruising with children , you'll want to toss entertainment and snack options in your carry-on to keep them happy in the check-in line and on the ship until the rest of the luggage arrives.

These items could include portable video games, books, favorite snacks, coloring books or a cuddly naptime toy. You don't want a meltdown to kick off your cruise, so make sure you're prepared to make the little ones happy once you're on the ship.

Also, if you're traveling with babies and toddlers, pack extra diapers, wipes, sippy cups and other necessary gear in your carry-on, so you have everything you need for the afternoon and evening in case your luggage arrives late.

A change of clothing

If you're still waiting for your bag to arrive just before sailaway or at the dinner hour, it won't be a problem if you've planned ahead and packed a change of clothing in your carry-on. It can be something as simple as a pair of shorts and a fresh shirt or a sundress and sandals, but it's still nice to change out of your travel clothes before heading up to the pool deck for a celebratory glass of Champagne or going out for dinner on the first evening of your cruise.

An extra set of clothes is also useful to have on hand in the rare event that your luggage gets lost or goes missing for longer than the first night. If you truly get stuck without your bags, you'll have a spare outfit so you can wear one while washing the other.

Electronic devices and chargers

Whether you're traveling with a laptop, tablet, e-reader, gaming device or just your family's collection of smartphones, it's advisable to keep your electronic devices with you so they don't get lost, stolen or damaged.

Once you arrive, you might need to charge one or all of your devices, so keep the chargers and their cords in an organizer or pouch in your carry-on bag. A portable phone charger is also a great idea to bring on vacation, especially if you'll be using your smartphone as your camera during your cruise.

If you do have camera equipment, keep it secure in either a camera bag or in your carry-on luggage and bring it with you on the ship. It's one more thing to have to carry on board, but you don't want your investment to get damaged or lost before you start your vacation. Plus, you don't want to miss out on first-day photos.

Toiletries and hair items

If you'll need personal items like body wash, shampoo, moisturizer, eye drops, hairbrushes and hairspray to freshen up before leaving your cabin, bring them with you in travel-size containers in your carry-on bag. Some people prefer their own products to those available on the ship.

This is especially important if you arrive at your ship after an overnight or early morning flight, and really need to brush your teeth or put in your contacts once you make it to the ship.

Jewelry and other valuables

While it's not advisable to travel with expensive jewelry, you likely want to glam it up while on your cruise. Even costume jewelry can be pricey, so keep it with you in the luggage that you carry on board.

Once you're settled in your cabin, you can lock up your jewelry, passport, wallet and other valuable items that will fit into the safe. Some rooms have modest-size safes, and others can accommodate a small laptop. If the size of your in-room safe is a concern, check with the cruise line before you sail.

Can you bring snacks on a cruise? What to know about bringing your own food and drinks

B etween buffets, dining rooms, specialty restaurants and pool deck grills, it might not seem necessary to bring your own food on a cruise . But you'd be surprised by the number of times you find yourself wishing for a granola bar between meals or in the middle of a particularly long shore excursion .

Perhaps you or someone with whom you're traveling has dietary restrictions or medication that needs to be taken with food. Or maybe you've got picky kids who might turn up their noses at dinner or a spouse who has 2 a.m. cravings but doesn't want to spend extra for late-night room service .

So, what's the deal with bringing snacks on a cruise? Is it allowed, and if so, are there restrictions? And can you bring your own drinks on a cruise, too?

Here's everything you need to know.

Note: If you have a special need or dietary restriction, it's a good idea to contact your cruise line's special requests department well in advance of sailing to make sure they will provide the food you need or allow you to bring it on board.

Can you bring food on a cruise?

The short answer is yes, you can. However, there are restrictions that limit the types of food and how they're packaged. You can't, for example, waltz on board with several dozen of grandma's freshly baked cookies or the ingredients to make your own salad.

What kind of snacks can I bring on a cruise?

Cruise ships permit just about any food that's prepackaged. That includes items like granola, protein and cereal bars; packs of crackers and cookies; nuts; beef jerky; and bagged items like chips, crackers and popcorn. It also includes baby food and formula.

Candy is also allowed, so pack all the fruit snacks, M&M's and licorice you'd like.

The catch is that your treats have to be shelf-stable and sealed, so don't crack open a giant bag of Reese's Pieces, Life Savers Gummies or Doritos, eat a few handfuls and then try to board with the bag open.

You should also avoid bringing anything that's fresh, that requires refrigeration or that you prepared at home and put in your own container. If it can spoil at any time during your sailing, it's a no-go.

Can you bring drinks on a cruise?

This answer isn't as simple as yes or no. You can bring drinks, but there are limits, especially when it comes to alcohol.

Each cruise line has its own policy, but generally, each person can bring a limited amount of their favorite nonalcoholic drinks, including water, juice, soda, coffee, sports drinks and energy drinks. Lines that allow it are Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean and Virgin Voyages. Lines that do not allow this are Holland America (with the exception of bottled water, which is allowed in limited quantities), MSC Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Note that all major cruise lines do have alternative milks, including soy and almond. Some also offer oat and coconut milks. If you require a specific type, your cruise line should be able to accommodate you with advance notice, so you do not have to bring your own.

In terms of alcohol policies , just about every mainstream cruise line allows one bottle of wine, sparkling wine or Champagne of up to 750 mL per person 21 years of age or older. Sometimes the line will charge a corkage fee of between $15 and $25 per bottle; some lines will only charge it if you consume the bottle outside of your cabin.

None of the major lines (with the exception of Disney Cruise Line, which allows up to six cans of beer per person 21 or older) permits passengers to bring their own beer or liquor.

The exception is luxury cruise lines . Because they include alcohol in their fares and don't stand to miss out on the related onboard revenue, they allow cruisers to bring as much alcohol as they'd like, within reason and regardless of type.

All cruise lines will also allow passengers to bring distilled water onto ships for use in medical devices, such as CPAP machines.

How to bring drinks on a cruise

If you're traveling with drinks that don't include alcohol, the most common rule is that each person can have up to 12 cans or cartons. Sometimes plastic bottles are allowed, but you should check with your cruise line to be certain. Glass bottles are almost always prohibited. Drinks must be sealed; open containers aren't allowed, even if they comply with the above rules.

If you're bringing wine, sparkling wine or Champagne, glass bottles are permitted.

All drinks must be carried on and cannot be put inside checked bags for boarding. If they're found in checked luggage during the embarkation process, your bags will be held until you can claim them. You will be required to open your bags in front of security personnel, who will decide if what you've packed falls within your ship's rules. If it doesn't, your items will be confiscated.

With all of this in mind, there are still cruisers who will try to sneak alcohol on board . Don't do it. It's not worth the risk that you'll be caught, have your alcohol confiscated and be labeled a cheapskate or a rule breaker.

Can you take food off a cruise ship? How about drinks?

The answer here, again, depends on the types of food and drinks. In many ports of call, you can have prepackaged items, but fresh ones will be confiscated. In other words, don't expect to grab fresh fruit from the buffet at breakfast to take ashore as a midday snack. You often won't be allowed to have it. In certain ports, including some in Mexico, officials use trained dogs to sniff out any contraband produce.

Ports are often a bit more flexible about drinks. This is especially true in warm-weather destinations where it's easier to dehydrate. Be smart about what you bring, though. Bottles of water (whether single-use or reusable ones you fill yourself) are a better idea than to-go cups of coffee, which are sometimes banned.

Can you bring food or drink items back to your ship from port?

The rules here are similar for what you can bring onto a cruise. You can bring back prepackaged, shelf-stable foods, but you'll want to avoid anything that's homemade, fresh, not in sealed packaging and not shelf-stable. I once had to throw away (read: eat and give away as many as I could before reboarding) six of the most beautiful doughnuts because I didn't realize I couldn't bring them with me back on board. I only found out when a ship security guard told me I couldn't board the tender boat with my treats.

You can also bring nonalcoholic drinks that are sealed and fall within your cruise line's limits.

The difference between bringing alcohol on board in port, versus at embarkation, is that passengers are allowed to do it — but there are stipulations.

Cruise lines understand that travelers often spring for duty-free booze as a souvenir. Should you decide to purchase a bottle (or several) to take home with you, you can bring it back to your ship. However, you won't be allowed to keep it with you.

When you reboard your vessel and pass through security, you'll have to leave your haul with a crew member. They will take your name and cabin number, and you can either pick your purchases up on the last night of the sailing, or it will be sent to your room. The same rule applies if you buy bottles in the onboard shops.

What is the job of a cruise director? Meet Marques Matthias.

If a cruise vacation was a movie, Marques Matthias would be the narrator.

As a cruise director for Carnival Cruise Line, Matthias' voice guides guests through their days onboard, outlining the ship’s scheduled activities and giving instructions over the vessel’s speakers, or emceeing events.

“Being able to (take) a cruise and realize that people get paid to have that vacation life, I was like, ‘That's something I want to be a part of,’” said Matthias, who goes by MarQ Anthony on the voyages.

The 36-year-old Minnesotan, who has worked for the line since 2015, is cruise director of the line’s newest ship, Carnival Venezia . He spoke to USA TODAY about what it's like to work on a cruise ship, launching the line’s new vessel and more.

What brought you to the cruise industry and this role?

Matthias: My grandfather passed away … and my mom kind of wanted to change the way that we were looking at our holidays and stuff. She was like, “You know what, I remember so many moments of life that were about the vacations I had with my father.” And so we decided that instead of doing Christmas as normal with the gift exchange and all that, that we were going to shake it up and be able to live on the memories of being on vacation together.

So, we ended up taking a cruise, and I had just the best time. We met so many of the crew members, and they were like, “Have you ever thought about working on a cruise ship?” And I was like: “I'm from Minnesota. We don't have cruise ships up there.” And they were like, “OK, that's not like a thing, though. You can still get away.” I was working in a cubicle (at a science museum), and I got back and was like, That life was really exciting . And so I thought, Let me just go for it.

So I put in my application, and I started off as part of the Fun Squad and had a chance to do that and just shared the interest that maybe one day, someday, I could be the cruise director. … And within a year, I ended up having the opportunity to get (experience) and so then I went to the Carnival Splendor, and that was my first ship as a cruise director. And I was only supposed to cover for a vacation, and then it turned out to be a full contract.

How long is a typical contract?

Matthias: Most of our contracts are between like four and six months that we’re on the ship, and then about two months is vacation that we’ll go to our designated homes and get to breathe a little bit and then come back rejuvenated for another dose of it.

How long do you spend on one ship in particular?

Matthias: It kind of depends. One of the cool things about Carnival is that they're always looking at us to be able to bring out the best of ourselves. So, if we are maybe trialing a ship out of Miami and we just (can’t necessarily) get that vibe of Miami, then we can have the conversations of, like, “Oh, I would really like to try a different home port, maybe a different, longer or shorter itinerary.” 

So, it's cool that we do have the option to kind of switch up our ships, but if we do really enjoy (it) and we're finding that we've got a good groove on things, then we also can stick there for a couple of years at a time.

What does a typical day look like?

Matthias: It depends on the day. … So a typical sea day could literally be starting at 8:30 in the morning, where I'm starting to prepare the day, and then I go into (The Wave) Morning Show, and then I go into our debarkation presentation. And then right after that, like, for example, today, we had our Father's Day event on the Lido deck, so then we celebrated with that. And then right afterward, we had our Groove for St. Jude (charity event), and then I ran downstairs to grab a sweat rag and wipe off my face. … So there's all these events that coordinate the majority of my day. But then I'm also responsible for doing a couple (of) reports at the end of the day, making sure that my Fun Squad – which is the team that I'm the direct supervisor toward – (is) also prepared and set and whatever. And so I have the sit-down time to be able to chat with them, check in with them. …

Port days, we get up, we get everybody off the ship, and then that's kind of like our downtime. So there are times where we get to go and explore the ports, or sometimes we just need to stick around and take a nap or do some laundry.

And then for days … where it's debarkation, it's a little bit more stressful just because we've got (thousands of) guests that are going to be all getting off the ship and then we have a little bit of time to kind of catch a breath, and then we get ready to do it all over again.

What is your relationship with the guests like?

Matthias: I think for me, one of the biggest parts of this job is I am really all about making sure that not only is everybody having a good time, (but I also) want to make sure everybody's included. So I really try to emphasize being able to make sure that I am off the stage and walking around the ship just as much, because I want people to feel that they can come up to me and be like, “Hey, I don't know you, but you seem kind of cool and can we get a picture?” Absolutely. …

So for me, even though the days can be long, they can be tiring, it's that experience of being able to say, “I want to get you away from some of the stress, some of the headache of life on land, to give you this fun for a little while and make sure that you know that you're just as special as the person next to you and the person next to them and the person next to them.”

What’s it like to launch a new ship?

Matthias: Being able to bring the new ship (to the fleet) is stressful because there's so much pressure. But it's also really cool because – my mom had said to me, “Look, you've got all these people that are going to be looking towards you, but remember, they chose you for a reason, and it's because you know what you're doing.” 

… I get to be the face of this brand new beautiful ship, but I also know that I've got a really amazing support system of my Fun Squad, of the hotel director, of the housekeeping team, from the food operations teams. Everyone's here because, at the end of the day, we just want to make sure that there's a great experience.

What is your favorite part of doing this type of work?

Matthias: To be completely honest, as cheesy as people might think it is, it's actually the people. When I originally got into the idea of working on a cruise ship, I thought, This is going to be a moment for myself to be able to go explore the world (and) see all these amazing places that I've never been to . And I have been so honored to be able to go and see so many corners and pockets of the world that I never even heard of, (and) then to consistently be able to go back there.

But for me, it's the memories of being there with the people that make that experience so much more amazing and being able to meet now friends that literally come from all over the world.

How to Pack for a Cruise

I had so much fun sharing a diary of what I wore and what we did on our 8-day Carnival cruise (here: 1, 2, 3, 4).  Today I’m capping off that experience with a full break down of what to pack for a cruise. If you’ve ever had questions on what to pack, you’ve come to the right place!

First up: swim wear. If your cruise is in the Caribbean, I would start here. My first step was to throw 6 swimsuits and 6 cover ups in my bag. I wore 5 swimsuits and 4 cover-ups (pictured) due to inclement weather on the last day, and I opted to wear gym clothes as a cover-up in outfit #2. You can certainly pack less and re-wear items. You can bring a travel size detergent, wash a swimsuit in your sink, and hang it up on the drying rack located conveniently in your bathroom!

Your checklist for swim wear:

• Swim cover ups
• Water shoes or non-slip boat shoes with traction
• Bathing suits

Note: no need to bring beach towels: cruise ships provides those for you!

Next up is a compilation of everything I wore to dinner. I didn’t pack any extra outfits – this was everything in my suitcase. Since I didn’t travel by plane, I was liberal with how many pairs of heels I packed (5), but if you’re flying, I would narrow down your dinner outfit shoes to 1-3 pairs to save space.

Your checklist for dinner outfits:

• Two outfits for formal night. //  My outfits for formal night are the two in the far left column. I would sum up formal night dress code (aka “cruise elegant”) as cocktail attire. Some people will wear tuxedos and evening gowns (‘black tie”) but it’s not necessary to go that fancy if you’re not up for it. I would recommend picking something you would feel comfortable wearing to a wedding though. To review the full Carnival dress code, go here. Both of the dresses I wore would feel too fancy to wear out to dinner, but formal enough to consider for a wedding.
• Outfits for the remaining nights of dinner. //  Our cruise was 8 nights, so there are 8 outfits here. I went pretty casual in linen pants and a jumpsuit two of the nights, while the other nights I went for dressier outfits I would normally wear on a date or a night out. Items that aren’t allowed in the dining room are gym shorts, bathing suit attire, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men and baseball hats. Otherwise anything is game. (And to be honest, sometimes people break those rules. I don’t recommend being one of those people though!) To review the full Carnival dress code, go here.
• Clutches. //  I carried a “regular” purse onto the ship and then didn’t touch it again until we left. Little clutches are perfect to take to dinner with you. All you need is your room key and some lip gloss!

Now that your swimwear and dinner outfits are decided on, it’s time to tackle the last major category: the in-between outfits. This is what you will wear to travel to and from the ship (outfits #1 and #5 above), outfits you can wear to brunch in the nice dining room (outfits #2 and #4 above), and in general outfits you can throw on and wear around the ship. You will also want to consider any stops your ship is making that are NOT swim destinations, like San Juan, which is more of a city tour (I wore outfit #3 for that).

As you can see, I went with super comfortable outfits – stretchy pants, comfy shorts. I also repeated the bottom two outfits twice. If not repeating an outfit was my goal, then I needed to pack at least 2 more of these kinds of outfits for this trip.

Your checklist for in-between outfits:

• An outfit for traveling to the ship
• An outfit for traveling home from the ship
• 2-3 outfits you can wear to brunch in the nice dining room, or around the ship
• Outfits for excursions/stops that are not swim/beach destinations

One last section in my suitcase: work out gear. Totally optional, but every Carnival ship I’ve been on has a nice gym, and they offer yoga and exercise classes. I brought 4 workout outfits, wore one for a swim cover up, and the three others to work out in.

Your checklist for gym outfits:

• Gym clothes
• Empty water bottle (fill it up on the Lido Deck and take it with you to the gym)

Plan a getaway

• Two swim cover-ups
• One gym tank
• One swimsuit
• Sweatshirt (never got that cold)

What I needed to pack but didn’t:

• 2-3 more “in-between” outfits.
• Underwear – I swear you change 3 times a day on a cruise. You can never have enough.
• Outfit for the ride home.
• Outfit for San Juan. (I was okay with what I had but didn’t even think about packing for a city stop!)

More cruise packing tips:

• Bring an empty bottle to fill up with ice water. Take it off the ship, or with you to the gym.
• The sandwich bar has the yummiest turkey wraps. Bring a plastic baggie to throw one of those in and take it off the ship for a snack.
• Bring snacks like granola bars for when you are off the ship. The only portable snacks on board for the most part are apples and bananas.
• You are allowed to bring one bottle of wine per person. Pay a small corking fee to enjoy it at dinner, or enjoy it in your room for free.
• There should be a hair dryer already in your room, but I packed one just in case.
• HDMI cable if you want to watch movies off your computer in the comfort of your room.
• Bug spray, swimmer’s ear medicine or motion sickness medicine.
• Reading materials like books and magazines for days at sea.
• Laundry detergent to hand-wash your bathing suit or anything else (they provide the drying rack in your room).
• Umbrella. Automatic guarantee of nice weather if you bother to carry it.
• Camera. To capture all those amazing cruise memories!

Cruise lines changing itineraries as Hurricane Beryl charges through Caribbean

With ports on both sides of the state, Florida is a popular destination for those planning a cruise.

Those plans are being disrupted this week after Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Carriacou Island Monday as a powerful Category 4 storm with 150-mph winds.

The hurricane has grown since then, and is now at Category 5 hurricane with 165-mph winds as it moves west across the Caribbean Sea . Life-threatening winds and storm surge are expected to impact Jamaica by Wednesday.

Cruisemapper shows few cruise ships in Caribbean as Hurricane Beryl continues westward path

There were a few cruise ships in the Caribbean Sea early Tuesday, with most only going as far south as Jamaica and most concentrated along the Mexican coast, according to cruisemapper.com.

A few ships were shown in Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands.

Most ships were concentrated around the Bahamas and off the east coast of Florida.

Beryl is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to Jamaica Wednesday as it moves quickly west across the Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean Blog announces changes to itineraries because of Hurricane Beryl

▶  Royal Caribbean had three ships in the southeastern Caribbean as of July 1 and announced it was changing cruise ship itineraries because of Hurricane Beryl, according to Royal Caribbean Blog.

Icon of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, and Harmony of the Seas have all changed itineraries due to the hurricane, according to the website.

Royal Caribbean's newest and largest ship — Icon of the Seas — departed from Miami, June 29, days before Beryl hit the eastern Caribbean. The ship was scheduled to visit St. Maarten and St. Thomas, among other locations in the eastern Caribbean. Instead it will visit Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico. Cruisemapper.com showed the ship off Cozumel Tuesday morning.

Royal Caribbean notified passengers via email of the itinerary change intended to avoid strong winds and high waves on the sea.

Wonder of the Seas, which left Port Canaveral June 30, will skip two ports and call on Nassau, Bahamas, the blog announced. Tuesday morning, cruisemapper showed the ship between Key West and Cuba.

“We’re terribly sorry for the last-minute change caused by the weather, your safety is our top priority," the letter read.

"Please know, being onboard is one of the safest places because we are faster and can move out of the way of any inclement weather."

Norwegian Cruise Line changes stops to avoid eastern Caribbean

▶  Norwegian Cruise Line  altered nearly the entire itinerary for a week-long sailing on its Norwegian Breakaway ship that departed from Miami on Sunday. The line canceled stops in Honduras, Harvest Caye in Belize, and Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, according to a letter sent to guests the line shared with USA TODAY. The ship will instead visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas, Tortola, and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas instead.

“While we share your disappointment, these modifications were made with great consideration as your safety, and that of our crew, is always our number one priority,” the letter said.

The line similarly changed a week-long sailing aboard Norwegian Jade that left Port Canaveral on Saturday, replacing planned calls in Falmouth, Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel with San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tortola and Puerto Plata.

Carnival Cruise Line bumps up stops to Mexico

▶  Carnival Cruise Line’s  Carnival Liberty ship moved a planned Friday stop in Cozumel up to Tuesday. The vessel departed on a week-long cruise from New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday,  according to CruiseMapper .

Carnival Horizon, which is sailing a  six-day itinerary  that left Miami on Sunday, will skip a visit to Grand Cayman on Wednesday.

“The safety of our guests and crew is paramount, and we are continuing to monitor forecasts and factor in guidance from the National Hurricane Center, U.S. Coast Guard, and the local port authorities to provide timely updates to our guests as more information becomes available,” spokesperson Matt Lupoli said via email.

Disney Cruise Line replaces Falmouth visit with sea day

▶  Disney Cruise Line’s  Disney Fantasy ship — which set sail on a  week-long cruise  from Port Canaveral on Saturday — will not visit Falmouth as planned on Wednesday. The stop will be replaced with a  sea day .

Cruisemapper showed the ship west of the Cayman Islands Tuesday morning.
