Côte de Beaune in Burgundy

The Côte de Beaune is a key wine-producing district of Burgundy. It is named after the historic town of Beaune, the epicenter of wine production and commerce locally, a city therefore living from wine since many centuries.

A narrow strip of land less than 5km wide, running for 25 km in a north-easterly direction, the Côte de Beaune's main vineyard is almost the same size as its northern counterpart, the famous Côte de Nuits. Together these two make up the most prestigious Burgundy vineyard and grow nearly all the most expensive red and white burgundy wines.

The Côte de Beaune is famous for its production of the world's most expensive white wines. Many of them bear a variation of the name Montrachet. The Côte de Beaune is also growing a handful of Burgundy's top red wines. Those from the premier cru vineyards of Pommard and the grand cru Corton are specially famous. As is the case for most of Burgundy wines, white wines are made from Chardonnay, the reds from Pinot Noir.

Côte de Nuit in Burgundy

Named after its principal village, Nuits St Georges, the Côte de Nuits forms the northern half of Burgundy’s vineyard. Côte de Nuit is a 20km strip running south from Dijon to Nuits-Saint-Georges with the best vineyards, called Premiers Crus and Grands Crus, situated halfway up its slopes where the drainage, exposure and soils are at their best.

With 22 of the region’s 23 red Grand Crus, this is Pinot Noir country; most of Burgundy’s (and indeed the world’s) great Pinot Noirs are made here, along with a small number of high quality Chardonnays, including one tiny Grand Cru (Musigny). Quantities are minute, certainly compared with Bordeaux, and prices for the very best wines are thus high. The most famous wines in Côte de Nuits are called Chambolle-Musigny, Côte de Nuits-Villages, Fixin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Marsannay, Morey-Saint-Denis, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot.

Locate these vineyards on Côte de Nuit Burgundy map .

Burgundy vineyard

With its unique terroir, Burgundy excels in both white and red wines. The soils of Burgundy are extremely varied, in their richness, depth, and mineral content. The soils vary from one end of the region to the other, and also within a single area. The soil may vary, for example, from the top of a hill to the bottom, from one vineyard plot to the next.

The climate in Burgundy is continental for the most part: fairly warm summers, with the constant threat of hail, and cold winters. The region is northerly and cool enough that the grapes just about ripen in most years. Not all years are good vintages; some have too much rain, or are too cool. The grapes grown in Burgundy are suited to cool climates.

Nearly all red wines of Burgundy derive from a single red grape variety, Pinot Noir. Similarly, white wines derive from Chardonnay. Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are thought to be native to the Burgundy region:

Burgundy wine history

In 910, monks already owned vineyards in Burgundy. Two hundred years later, many monks dedicated their monasteries to winemaking. In 1336, they created Clos de Vougeot, a property still producing great wines today. In 1395, Duke Philip the Bold of Burgundy issued a decree that the only red grape allowed to be planted was Pinot Noir. Overtime, as the power of the Church lessened, many vineyards were sold. Finally, after the French Revolution, all vineyards owned by the Church were taken away and sold. Until the 18th century most Burgundy wines were consumed locally. As roads improved travel, trading houses sprung up and sold the wine farther away. Burgundy’s reputation grew during the next one hundred years. In 1855 Dr. Jules Lavalle published a book on Burgundy rating the vineyards. In 1861, a three tier system for rating the vineyards was created. In 1936, when the French AOC system was adopted, most of the top tier vineyards from the 1861 classification were awarded Grand Cru status.

Burgundy, the land where Chardonnay is King!

Join our small group Burgundy wine tour from Paris and discover this beautiful French region where Chardonnay is King! This tour focuses on the local winemakers who help to make Burgundy wines so famous throughout the world. You'll visit three different wineries and taste more than ten amazing wines: red, white, and rosé.

At the first winery, you'll visit the vineyards and learn about the distinct characteristics of this region's soil. Then you'll be introduced to an award winning Chablis as well as six other magnificent wines. Afterwards you'll stop in the charming town of Chablis for the lunch break.

After lunch you'll visit a family run winery that has been making wine since 1453. Then at the third winery you'll tour the largest cellars in the region and taste three of their sparkling Crémant wines.

Burgundy landscape

The true Terroir of Chardonnay

This tour starts with a drive from Paris through the beautiful French Countryside to the Chablis Region of Burgundy. This scenic drive will be about 2 hours long and include a rest break halfway through. At the first winery of the day you'll learn everything about Chablis wine and what makes it so unique. You will walk through their beautiful vineyard overlooking the famous valley of Chablis.

You'll learn what the word “Terroir” really means as you touch the Chardonnay vines and the clay soil they grow in with your own hands. Then you'll visit the massive grape press and see where their wine is fermented and refined. Afterwards, you'll go for a tasting of at least 7 different wines.

The winemaker will teach you about the distinct characteristics of the white Chardonnay grapes. No one knows Chardonnay better than a Burgundy winemaker as Chardonnay was cultivated for the first time, in this region, more than 500 years ago. You'll also learn the difference between a Grand cru and a Premier Cru and why some bottles are labeled Millesime and others Cuvé.

A Charming village and Cellars of the Knights Templar

Next you'll visit the lovely town of Chablis, one of the most beautiful villages of the Burgundy region. Nestled in a bend of the Serein river this, once fortified, medieval village will charm you. You'll walk through the little cobbled streets and have an hour of free time to eat your lunch at the café or restaurant that you think best fits your taste and budget.

Following lunch you'll discover some of the oldest wineries in Burgundy. Since 1453, Domaine Bersan has been a family run winery. Dug out by the Knights Templar in the 11th and 12th centuries, the Bersan cellars are lined with hundreds of Oak Barrels, full of amazing wine and history.

Your guide will introduce you to at least 5 different wines, reds and whites. The Pinot Noir grape sings in their Red and their crisp sauvignon blanc will not leave you indifferent. You'll also be introduced to an extremely rare grape species: The Caesar. Blended with Pinot Noir, you get an appellation called Irancy. A red that can only be made in a really small part of the Burgundy region.

Lunch in a charming village

A Massive Cellar and Tiny Bubbles

Then you'll experience the perfect ending for this day trip when you discover the effervescent side of Burgundy at Bailly-Lapierre. They are one of the largest producers of Crémant de Bourgogne, a delicate sparkling wine made with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes. You'll visit their ancient underground quarry, with galleries that are 50 meters below ground and that extend for more than 10 acres.

These massive cellars provide the perfect natural conditions that are needed for the production of Crémant wines and their subtle effervescence. After your visit of their cellars you'll be invited to taste 3 of their sparkling wines in their very stylish tasting hall.

Then you'll start the calm drive back into Paris. It will take just over 2 hours long and there will be a restroom stop halfway through the drive. The day's adventures will be over when you say goodbye to your guide next to the Arc de Triomphe in central Paris.

Sparkling Crémant de Bourgogne

Good to Know:

  • During the drive to and from Burgundy there will be a stop half way through so that you can stretch your legs and use the restroom.
  • Your lunch is not included in our price so please bring along some way of paying for it.
  • You can purchase wine from all of the places we visit. Our limit for transporting it in the van is 18 bottles per person. Otherwise things start to get uncomfortable.
  • Some days, Domaine Bersan can be replaced by Domaine Sorin. Another historical house, where Casanova, Alexandre Dumas and even Napoleon stayed.
  • Gratuities aka "tips" are not included but welcomed by our guides.

IV - Privacy Policy

We are committed to protecting your privacy. Your personal informations will never be disclosed to any third parties.

V - Child Policy

All reservations made for children under the age of 18 years old must be made by an adult and we must be informed at the time of booking exactly how many children are in your party and their ages. This is vital information as it allows our guide to prepare the proper child sized equipments for the bike tours and the booster seats for all day trips/excursions that use one of our vans. All reservations made for a minor under the age of 18 years old must also include the reservation for an adult who will be 100% solely responsible for the safety and well being of the child while on the tour. Every child, under the age of 12 years old, partaking in a bicycle tour will be required to wear a helmet and a reflective vest as per French Law. The adult who accompanies the child agrees to the responsibility of choosing a properly sized helmet, adjusting the helmet, and keeping the helmet on the head of the child during the whole tour. Blue Fox Travel has helmets in multiple sizes for you to choose from at no cost. Don't forget: Children who will be riding in a baby/child seat, on a tandem attachment bike, or in a booster seat in one of our vans absolutely MUST have their seat reserved beforehand. We NEED to know exactly what your child will need before they show up. Please make it clear in the “Special Requirements” section of our booking form.

VI- Child Bike Policy

Children who will be riding on their own may be subject to a very short test run before the tour starts in which they will be expected to demonstrate: that they are well suited for their bike’s size and settings, that they know how to brake properly and that they are, in general, good cyclists who can be trusted to follow their tour guide in a safe manner. We own 20” and 24” kids bikes (size of the wheel). Adult bikes are 26”. If the guide, or manager, finds that the child is not, for any reason, a good enough cyclist then the guide, or manager, has the right to refuse to let the child follow the tour on a personal bike. This means they will either be asked to ride on one of our ‘tandem attachments’ which is attached to the back of a parents bike OR asked to ride in a child seat attached to the back of a parents bike. If the child refuses the change, then the guide or manager has the right to cancel the reservation, and not allow you and your child on the bike tour. Refunds will not be issued if your reservation is cancelled because of your child not being able to cycle and their refusal to ride attached to you. Baby seats are for kids that are between the ages of 1 and 3 years old (max weight 22 kg (48 lbs)). We also have some cool Burley™ tandem attachment bikes that are suitable for little kids who are too big for the baby seat but too small to cycle on their own (max weight 38 kg (85 lbs) - max height 137 cm (4 ft 6 in)).

VII - Damages to Blue Fox Travel Property

If you or anyone in your party damages a vehicle, a Blue Bike™, a vehicle, a child's bike, a helmet, a baby/child seat, a tandem attachment bike, any bike attachments, or a booster seat in such a way that it becomes badly disfigured, broken, or unusable, then BFT reserves the right to claim a fee of up to the cost of repair of the damaged bike/vehicle or object.

VIII - Miscellaneous

Getting around paris, paris travel guide, paris essentials, train travel, paris arrondissements, visiting burgundy – for a day, a week, or longer….

Perhaps you love the Grand Cru wines. Or maybe you long for the beauty of the French countryside. Or you may be more sportif and hiking on trails through world-famous vineyards is your ideal. For any of these reasons, the region of Bourgogne — "Burgundy" in English — is likely calling your name. At least that's how we felt when we first discovered the Côte d'Or , the relatively small area of Burgundy that produces some of the most renowned, and most expensive, wines in the world.

If we sound like a tourism brochure it's because we think this region of Burgundy is pretty darn-near perfect to visit for four days, five days, heck, why not ten days? We haven't even mentioned the Michelin-class restaurants and the good food that abounds in the markets and shops. We love walking the vineyards, visiting a grand cru domain, eating lunch at Les Cocottes in Beaune, having dinner at Le Charlemagne , in the middle of vineyards only 7 km away.

Burgundy Vines & Village

While we might prefer to hunker down in Meursault for a week, it's certainly possible to get a taste of Burgundy on a day trip from Paris. And by "taste" we mean sampling some of the greatest wines of this iconic reason in VIP wine tastings arranged for you by our Burgundy pal, Youri Lebault. Of course there's also time for a lovely lunch. Youri offers the premier wine tour of the region and part his service is that he'll pick you up at the high-speed train station in Dijon and get you back there at the end of the day.

More about Youri and the Bourgogne Gold Tours in a moment, but we wanted to tell you about riding the TGV trains from Paris. Those are the ultra-fast trains that get you from Paris to Burgundy in just about ninety minutes. This lets you leave Paris at 7 AM or 8 AM, meet up for the VIP private wine tour, and then get back to Paris at around 8 PM.

Bourgogne Gold Tours get you past the "velvet ropes" and into private cellars for what's likely to be the most mind-blowing wine tastings you will ever experience. But even more, Youri's high-end wine tour also immerses you in Burgundian wine culture and history. As we mentioned, you can even arrange to do a tour on a day trip from Paris. It's the best money you'll ever spend on a wine-related activity.

  • Burgundy Accommodations

Burgundy Accommodations

While you can do visit the Côte d'Or as a day trip from Paris, we prefer to linger in Burgundy, getting to know the region, enjoying the wines, taking in the scenery, and eating in some pretty darn good restaurants. If that's your plan as well, we have some wonderful accommodation recommendations for you.

The Highest-Rated Paris Activities

Private day trip to burgundy from paris.

Private Day Trip to Burgundy from Paris

This tour picks you up from your Paris address in a luxury vehicle and whisks you to the center of Burgundy wine country. Along the way you learn the history and lore of the region and its wines.

You visit the medieval center of of Beaune and the Hospice de Beaune , famous for it's massive tiled roof. There's time for lunch at a traditional regional restaurant before you drive to Chateau de Meursault (one of our top domain recommendations) for a guided wine tasting. You'll also visit the vineyards and have opportunities for photos.

quotation

Joseph was fantastic! Very energetic, knowledgable & accommodating. A big thanks to Deborah for her amazing itinerary and suggestions as well! I would really recommend this tour to Burgundy or utilising this guide's experience for a personalised experience. Mustard tasting, wine, and history!" – 5-Star Review

The Climats of Burgundy

The Climats of Burgundy

Within the large region of Bourgogne , or Burgundy, is a narrow, 50-km-long strip of land running from Dijon to Santenay. This is the Côte d'Or and it's where many of the world's top wines are grown. This small bit of geography produces over 1,000 vintages, in a dizzying array of names and classifications that recognize distinct micro-regions right down to the size of a small vineyard.

It's not as difficult as it sounds! We untangle the story.

The Best Restaurants in Burgundy

Le benaton, beaune.

Le Benaton

In addition to its wine, the Côte d'Or is also known for very good restaurants, a number of them with Michelin stars. Our top Michelin experience in Burgundy was at restaurant Le Benaton in Beaune, the capital of Burgundy wine country.

Le Benaton exemplifies the best of Burgundy cooking, using fresh, local ingredients in unexpected flavour combinations that are often based on traditional regional dishes. Top recommendation from us.

Maison Lameloise, Chagny

Maison Lameloise

It's one impressive course after another in the stone and wood dining rooms of Lameloise . Is it any wonder that it continues to hold the highest Michelin award of three stars?

Located in the small Burgundian town of Chagny, Lameloise regularly appears on the lists of the world's best restaurants. Holding Michelin stars since as long as the stars have existed (1926), today Lameloise continues its tradition of clever, modern takes on traditional Burundian cooking using fresh, local ingredients under the leadership of Chef Eric Pras.

Le Charlemagne, Pernand-Vergelesses

Le Charlemagne

Just outside of the famed wine village of Pernand-Vergelesses, and surrounded on all sides by the magnificent vineyards, restaurant Le Charlemagne perfectly blends Asian and French influences to create an absolutely unique cuisine.

A meal here is like the best kind of theatre, with a delicious new discovery with every plate, presented in a unique fashion, mixing flavors you wouldn't have imagined. Like this — three small cubes of watermelon, witting on a feta sauce, topped with smoked tuna, tomato jelly and a sliver of cuttle fish. And it was fabulous. Not something you'll find at your local Paris bistro!

Delectable Food Tours in Paris

Edem, chassagne-montrachet.

EdEm

In another wine village (this one south of Beaune) we found restaurant EdEm on a tiny place on a dead-end street, up some stairs, above a domain's wine-tasting room. Yet this out-of-the-way restaurant owned by two young chefs was awarded a Michelin star after being open only one year.

We had to find out what this was all about, so we drove down to Chassagne-Montrachet and had lunch one day prepared by Chef de Cuisine Edouard Mignot and pastry chef Emilie Rey ("Ed" and "Em", get it?). What we discovered were some attractive and delicious plats followed by some darn impressive desserts from Emilie.

Lily Collins’ Mini ‘Emily In Paris’ Press Tour Solidified Merlot As Fall’s Ultimate Hue

Take notes.

Lily Collins mini press tour Emily in Paris

With a series as fashion-forward as Emily In Paris , it’s surprising that the Season 4 promo trail was relatively short and sweet. Apart from a few photo-calls and the official premieres for both parts, the show’s star, Lily Collins only attended a select few events before the new season hit Netflix on August 15. Instead, Collins scheduled a post-release press tour for Emily In Paris , which kickstarted in New York on September 16 — four days after Season 4 Part Two premiered.

For an early-morning appearance on The View , the fashion muse arrived at ABC studios in a burgundy suit set courtesy of Nina Ricci Fall/Winter 2024 — the creative director Harris Reed was behind Emily’s iconic striped jumpsuit from episode three (you know the one). She began the monochromatic moment with an oversized double-breasted blazer with matching straight-leg pants. Instead of the barely-there bralette seen on the runway, Collins opted for a black crop-top with a sleek V-neck neckline. From there, she continued the dark red theme with complementary patent leather pumps from Saint Laurent. Gold stud earrings and her wedding ring rounded out her first OOTD.

Just a few hours later, Collins made a pitstop at Good Morning America , where she confirmed Emily In Paris will return for Season 5. Before sharing the news live on-air, the A-lister posed for the paparazzi in another duo from Nina Ricci Fall/Winter 2024. In a similar dark merlot shade as the aforementioned suit, Collins styled two croc-embossed pieces, starting with a cropped long-sleeve top. She paired the plunging top with the coordinating high-rise midi skirt adorned with a ruched side embellishment. Just like her previous one-color look, Collins chose minimalistic accessories, including the ankle-strap Saint Laurent heels.

For her final OOTD, Collins ditched her Nina Ricci numbers for a surprisingly casual co-ord. While out and about in Hudson Square, the multi-hyphenate looked effortlessly cool in the same V-neck crop top from earlier in the day, layered underneath a black blazer. She dressed the timeless topper down with low-waisted jeans in a light-wash finish. Then, Collins took cues from Jennifer Lawrence, Dua Lipa, and Dakota Johnson (just to name a few) by wearing the famous mesh ballet flats from Alaïa. She chose the divisive slip-ons in black — a celebrity-favorite tint, no doubt. Finally, a top-handle mini bag from Cartier completed her anti-Emily ensemble.

Since Emily In Paris has only been out for a few days, there’s a chance Collins will deliver more press tour outfits in the coming days. So, keep your eye out for more quick appearances from the celeb.
