Start Cape Town

The adventure begins. Drop off your bags at the hotel and meet your Trip Manager and new the supplier fam in the lobby. We'll all share a meal tonight along with some drinks to get to know each other.

Our time in Cape Town is dedicated to sightseeing and today is no exception! We'll start at the very top with a cable car ride up Table Mountain, followed by a city tour of Cape Town’s key sights and historical attractions. After that, the rest of the day is yours. We recommend the V&A Waterfront (SA’s most visited attraction). You’ll also have the option to join our Township Tour & Amy Foundation Lunch, which gives you a locally guided insight into life during Apartheid. Tonight, you’ll get to know your new pals in the best way possible – with food, drinks and music in our MasterChef-style cooking class.

This is your day to take advantage of Cape Town’s myriad local excursions – after breakfast of course. Our fav is a scenic drive along the cliffs of Chapman's Peak and down to Cape Point – the South-Western tip of Africa. In the afternoon, we’ll stop off at Boulders Beach to admire a colony of adorable African penguins - with a chance to go kayaking with them too! What next? Well, you can't go wrong with wine tasting (and a view) to round off an incredible day touring the "fairest Cape in all the world."

Cape Town to Kruger National Park via Johannesburg

Rise and shine. Today, we have a (very early) flight to Johannesburg, the city of Gold, where our first port of call will be the Kruger National Park. The Savannah is calling. We've got no time to waste! We'll hop straight into our overland safari truck (with large windows for the perfect safari views) and begin our journey through South Africa's country side to Kruger. Yup, it’s safari time! We arrive at the gates to Kruger National Park this afternoon with binoculars at the ready. Rolling through this wildlife haven (the size of a small country) for a sunset game drive as we make our way to our exclusive the supplier Safari Camp. Set on the banks of the Sabie River, in the middle of Kruger, this Special Stay has us camping in canvas tents (the kind with mattresses and linen). All dotted around a roaring bonfire, listening to lions off in the distance, and under the African stars. That's right, its not 5 star accommodation...its 5000 star camping.

Kruger National Park

Today we're up bright and early for our first taste of the fresh morning air. We'll start with a sunrise safari – just in time to catch Africa’s elusive predators finishing off their nocturnal hunt. At midday, you’ll have the chance to relax back at the camp: you can visit the local shop, take a dip in the pool or visit the nearby restaurant where you can look out over the Sabie River and watch as the animals come to quench their thirst (yup, it's preddy special.) This afternoon, it’s back to the safari vehicles for a sunset game drive and another chance to see the Big Five and more. Tonight back at camp, we’ll tuck into a traditional South African braai or BBQ, complete with local sides and desserts.

Kruger National Park to Johannesburg

Rise & shine, explorers! Especially if you wanna choose to take the sunrise game drive (more game drives = more chances of ticking everything off that list). Or you could always choose to sleep in and catch a late brekkie. The game of hide and seek then continues one last time as we head back into the park, keeping our eyes open for any wildlife that's evaded us so far (come on cheetah... where are you) and bid farewell to Kruger. We’ll head off to Johannesburg this afternoon. Order of business? Crash at the hotel before we fly to Victoria Falls in the morning!

Johannesburg to Victoria Falls

This morning we'll drive to the airport to catch our flight up to Victoria Falls. We start off with the number one attraction around - the Falls themselves! Hike along the Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders and the largest waterfall in the world. You might want to pack your raincoat, as during certain times of the year you can get drenched from the rising spray, giving the falls its local name: 'The smoke that thunders'. This afternoon, you'll have the chance to jump, zipline or swing off the famous bridge connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia over the Zambezi River. Please note: From January to June this trip puts you in the Waterfront Hotel, Zambia, with a riverside deck and bar that overlooks the spray of the thunderous falls. Travelling from July to December? Don't worry, you're not missing out: we'll put you up in the Shearwater Explorers Village, Zimbabwe, just 400m from the - with bohemian cafes, curio markets and swimming pools to explore. It's a win win, basically.

Victoria Falls

Today you have the chance to try white water rafting along the Zambezi river. There's also a locally guided village tour - get to know the locals and experience their way of life. End the evening with a magnificent sunset cruise including drinks and dinner.

Victoria Falls to Chobe

We start today on foot, to literally ‘walk on the wild side’ with a guided walking safari along the Zambezi’s National Park. This is a unique way to track wildlife on foot while learning about some of the smaller animals – plus plants and just generally anything we come across. Afterwards, we go from foot mode to flight mode with a helicopter ride above the thunderous waters below - the best way to see the falls in all their glory. Then it’s across the border to Botswana for more of what we love. I.e., safaris! This time, it’s the world-famous Chobe National Park, known for its huge elephant population. Tonight, you’ll truly experience the wilderness with a night out in the middle of the African bush. We have a private the supplier site just for us, with our own guides, cooks and a bonfire – all set under the stars. After dinner, you’ll get the chance to fall asleep to the sounds of Africa: a jackal calling in the distance, the loud whoop of a hyena, perhaps the roar of lions as they wake from a daytime slumber. Catch you later, city life! Please note: Overnight Camping in Chobe won't be available during the Summer from October to March. Instead, you'll spend two nights at our lodge with Chobe Sunset and Sunrise Game Drives still included plus a buffet dinner.

This morning we'll wake up to watch the sunrise over the African bush with a light breakfast, before departing on a morning game drive to hopefully see some of the wildlife we may have heard the night before. We will arrive late morning to check into our new lodge and spend the rest of the day relaxing around the pool and swapping stories from the night before. On our last evening together you can opt for a wildlife cruise on the Chobe river. Surrounded by pods of hippos, crocs basking on the banks and all forms of African animals coming down to drink, this is truly one African sunset you'll never forget followed by a buffet dinner tonight.

Chobe to Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Dumela Botswana! We’ll head south today from Kasane to Gweta Lodge on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt pans. Opt to cruise the salt pans in open safari vehicles in search of a meerkat colony while getting some funky perspective photos in one of the largest salt flats in the world. Tonights treat is sundower drinks under an icon of Botswana before retiring to the lodge for dinner and drinks at the bar.

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans to Okavango Delta

We will say goodbye to the pans (for now) and head on to the wildlife haven that is the Okavango Delta Our minds already blown by this unique natural landscape, it's off to the Okavango Delta, where we'll take an awe-inspiring game drive before settling into our exclusive the supplier Safari Camp. We'll be greeted with luxe two person dome tents - pre-erected of course - with stretchers, mattresses and linen. Dinner? How about a campfire meal as we swap tales under a starswept sky?

Okavango Delta

Get your David Attenborough voice on, we're in the heart of Africa's iconic wildlife filming paradise. This sprawling wetland is home to some of Africa's most incredible species and after a quick bite to eat we're off on an early morning game drive in the Okavango Delta in hopes of spotting elephants, hippos and (if we're lucky) some predators. We'll head back to camp for a tasty lunch and siesta. Chill in the camp or opt for a Mokoro boat trip along the gorgeous waterways of the delta. In the afternoon we're back on another jaw-dropping game drive before our traditional campfire dinner. This evening we've a once in a lifetime opportunity - a night drive in the bush with spotlights seeking out elusive nocturnal animals you can't find during the day.

Okavango Delta to Maun

Another morning at the Delta (the struggle is real.) After coffee and breakfast at sunrise, it's time for another morning game drive – eyes peeled for elephants – as we make our way out of this wildlife paradise. Check into the lodge, chill by the pool and then take to the skies in an optional Okavango Delta helicopter flight. Hover just meters above the waterways or fly high for stunning views of this unique inland delta and of course, don’t forget your binocs for some wildlife spotting from the air. If you've got a head for heights, you won't find views more spectacular than this anywhere in the world. Tonight, you’ll polish off your last night in Botswana with a night in the town. The Okavango Delta Brewery calls, offering a tour, tasting and dinner for you to enjoy.

After a last breakfast together its time to say goodbye to new found friends and an incredible time in Botswana.

Customer reviews & ratings

I’d give it 10 stars if I could. Such a great balance of experiences with knowledgeable and fun guides and drivers throughout the whole trip.

There’s too many amazing moments to choose from, but would have to say the safari and camping in Chobe was pretty special!

Day 1: Start Cape Town

Location: cape town, accommodation: lodge, accommodation name: waterfront breakwater lodge (or similar).

The adventure begins. Drop off your bags at the hotel and meet your Trip Manager and new Contiki fam in the lobby. We'll all share a meal tonight along with some drinks to get to know each other.

Day 2: Cape Town

Meals included: breakfast.

Day 3: Cape Town

This is your day to take advantage of Cape Town’s myriad local excursions – after breakfast of course. Our fav is a scenic drive along the cliffs of Chapman's Peak and down to Cape Point – the South-Western tip of Africa. In the afternoon, we’ll stop off at Boulders Beach to admire a colony of adorable African penguins. What next? Well, you can't go wrong with wine tasting (and a view) to round off an incredible day touring the "fairest Cape in all the world."

Day 4: Cape Town To Kruger National Park

Location: cape town, kruger national park, accommodation: camp, accommodation name: contiki safari camp, lower sabie (or similar).

We’ll enter this wildlife Eden (the size of a small country) in the afternoon for a sunset game drive, and then make our way to the exclusive Contiki Safari Camp on the banks of the Sabie River. This Special Stay includes canvas tents, mattresses and linens - all set up in time for our arrival! We’ll spend tonight gathered round the open campfire, gazing up at the stars and listening to lions in the distance. 5 star accommodation? More like 5000 star accommodation.

Day 5: Kruger National Park

Location: kruger national park.

Day 6: Kruger National Park To Johannesburg

Location: kruger national park, johannesburg, accommodation name: sunrock guesthouse (or similar).

The game of hide and seek continues as we head back into the park, keeping our eyes open for any wildlife that evaded us yesterday including giraffes, hyenas, antelope… and even cheetahs! Next, we’ll stop off at a traditional village to learn more about life outside the big cities in Africa. With a local guide, we’ll discover the customs and traditions of the village, and partake in some of their popular activities. We’ll head off to Johannesburg this afternoon. Order of business? Crash at the hotel before we fly to Victoria Falls in the morning!

Day 7: Johannesburg To Victoria Falls

Location: johannesburg, victoria falls, accommodation name: shearwater explorer's village (or similar).

The evening will end off with a magnificent sunset cruise on the Zambezi including drinks and dinner. Please note: From January to June this trip puts you in the Victoria Falls Waterfront Hotel, Zambia, with a riverside deck and bar that overlooks the spray of the thunderous falls. Traveling from July to December? Don't worry, you're not missing out: we'll put you up in the Shearwater Explorers Village, Zimbabwe, just 400m from the falls - with bohemian cafes, curio markets and swimming pools to explore. It's a win win, basically.

Day 8: Victoria Falls

Location: victoria falls.

Today you have the chance to try white water rafting along the Zambezi river. There's also a locally guided village tour - get to know the locals and experience their way of life. End the evening with a magnificent sunset cruise including drinks and dinner.

Day 9: Victoria Falls To Chobe

Location: victoria falls, chobe national park, accommodation name: contiki safari camp (or similar), meals included: breakfast, dinner.

We have a private Contiki site just for us, with our own guides, cooks and a bonfire – all set under the stars. After dinner, you’ll get the chance to fall asleep to the sounds of Africa: a jackal calling in the distance, the loud whoop of a hyena, perhaps the roar of lions as they wake from a daytime slumber. Catch you later, city life! Please note: due to the rainy season, overnight camping in Chobe is not available from October to March. Instead, you’ll spend two nights in Chobe at a lodge with afternoon and morning game drives still included, plus a buffet dinner.

Day 10: Chobe

Location: chobe national park, accommodation name: kwalape safari lodge (or similar).

Day 11: Chobe To Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Location: chobe national park, makadikadi basin, accommodation name: gweta lodge (or similar).

Day 12: Makgadikgadi Salt Pans To Okavango Delta

Location: makadikadi basin, okavango delta.

We will say goodbye to the pans (for now) and head on to the wildlife haven that is the Okavango Delta Our minds already blown by this unique natural landscape, it's off to the Okavango Delta, where we'll take an awe-inspiring game drive before settling into our exclusive Contiki Safari Camp. We'll be greeted with luxe two person dome tents - pre-erected of course - with stretchers, mattresses and linen. Dinner? How about a campfire meal as we swap tales under a starswept sky?

Day 13: Okavango Delta

Location: okavango delta, meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Get your David Attenborough voice on, we are in the heart of Africa's iconic wildlife filming paradise. This sprawling wetland is home to some of Africa's most incredible species and we will start searching for them after a quick bite to eat and we're off on an early morning game drive in the Okavango Delta in hopes of spotting elephants, hippos and if we're lucky, some predators. We'll head back to camp for a tasty lunch and siesta. Chill in the camp or opt for a Mokoro boat trip along the gorgeous waterways of the delta. In the afternoon we're back on another jaw-dropping game drive before our traditional campfire dinner. The day isn't over, though - not even close. This evening we have a once in a lifetime opportunity - a night drive in the bush with spotlights seeking out elusive nocturnal animals you can't find during the day.

Day 14: Okavango Delta To Maun

Location: okavango delta, maun, accommodation name: island safari lodge (or similar).

After breakfast it's time for another morning game drive - eyes peeled for elephants - before we head to Maun and our lodge for the night. This afternoon opt to soar over the delta on a helicopter for peerless views of the wildlife below, as you hover just meters above the waterways. This evening you can choose to experience a dinner and show, with young people from the local community performing on the theme of conservation.

Day 15: End Maun

This wild adventure takes you to the biggest safari hotspots in Africa. Starting with the spectacular panoramas of Cape Town, you’ll head to Kruger National Park, where you’ll enjoy included game drives and spot elephants, buffalo and hopefully some lions. After coffee and breakfast at sunrise, it’s time for another morning game drive – eyes peeled for elephants – as we make our way out of this wildlife paradise. Check into the lodge, chill by the pool and then take to the skies in an optional Okavango Delta helicopter flight. Hover just meters above the waterways or fly high for stunning views of this unique inland delta and of course, don’t forget your binocs for some wildlife spotting from the air. If you’ve got a head for heights, you won’t find views more spectacular than this anywhere in the world. Tonight, you’ll polish off your last night in Botswana with a night in the town. The Okavango Delta Brewery calls, offering a tour, tasting and dinner for you to enjoy.

After a last breakfast together its time to say goodbye to new found friends and an incredible time in Botswana.

Tour itinerary.

Day 1 : Start Cape Town

The adventure begins. Drop off your bags at the hotel and meet your Trip Manager and new Contiki fam in the lobby. We'll all share a meal tonight along with some drinks to get to know each other.

Accommodation : Waterfront Breakwater Lodge (or similar)

Day 2 : Cape Town

Day 3 : Cape Town

This is your day to take advantage of Cape Town’s myriad local excursions – after breakfast of course. Our fav is a scenic drive along the cliffs of Chapman's Peak and down to Cape Point – the South-Western tip of Africa. In the afternoon, we’ll stop off at Boulders Beach to admire a colony of adorable African penguins - with a chance to go kayaking with them too! What next? Well, you can't go wrong with wine tasting (and a view) to round off an incredible day touring the "fairest Cape in all the world."

Day 4 : Cape Town to Kruger National Park via Johannesburg

Rise and shine. Today, we have a (very early) flight to Johannesburg, the city of Gold, where our first port of call will be the Kruger National Park. The Savannah is calling. We've got no time to waste! We'll hop straight into our overland safari truck (with large windows for the perfect safari views) and begin our journey through South Africa's country side to Kruger. Yup, it’s safari time! We arrive at the gates to Kruger National Park this afternoon with binoculars at the ready. Rolling through this wildlife haven (the size of a small country) for a sunset game drive as we make our way to our exclusive Contiki Safari Camp.

Accommodation : Contiki Safari Camp, Lower Sabie (or similar)

Day 5 : Kruger National Park

Day 6 : Kruger National Park to Johannesburg

Rise & shine, explorers! Especially if you wanna choose to take the sunrise game drive (more game drives = more chances of ticking everything off that list). Or you could always choose to sleep in and catch a late brekkie. The game of hide and seek then continues one last time as we head back into the park, keeping our eyes open for any wildlife that's evaded us so far (come on cheetah... where are you) and bid farewell to Kruger. We’ll head off to Johannesburg this afternoon. Order of business? Crash at the hotel before we fly to Victoria Falls in the morning!

Accommodation : Sunrock Guesthouse (or similar)

Day 7 : Johannesburg to Victoria Falls

Accommodation : Shearwater Explorer's Village (or similar)

Day 8 : Victoria Falls

Today you have the chance to try white water rafting along the Zambezi river. There's also a locally guided village tour - get to know the locals and experience their way of life. End the evening with a magnificent sunset cruise including drinks and dinner.

Day 9 : Victoria Falls to Chobe

Please note: Overnight Camping in Chobe won't be available during the Summer from October to March. Instead, you'll spend two nights at our lodge with Chobe Sunset and Sunrise Game Drives still included plus a buffet dinner.

Accommodation : Contiki Safari Camp (or similar)

Day 10 : Chobe

This morning we'll wake up to watch the sunrise over the African bush with a light breakfast, before departing on a morning game drive to hopefully see some of the wildlife we may have heard the night before. We will arrive late morning to check into our new lodge and spend the rest of the day relaxing around the pool and swapping stories from the night before. On our last evening together you can opt for a wildlife cruise on the Chobe river. Surrounded by pods of hippos, crocs basking on the banks and all forms of African animals coming down to drink, this is truly one African sunset you'll never forget followed by a buffet dinner tonight.

Accommodation : Kwalape Safari Lodge (or similar)

Day 11 : Chobe to Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Dumela Botswana! We’ll head south today from Kasane to Gweta Lodge on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt pans. Opt to cruise the salt pans in open safari vehicles in search of a meerkat colony while getting some funky perspective photos in one of the largest salt flats in the world. Tonights treat is sundower drinks under an icon of Botswana before retiring to the lodge for dinner and drinks at the bar.

Accommodation : Gweta Lodge (or similar)

Day 12 : Makgadikgadi Salt Pans to Okavango Delta

We will say goodbye to the pans (for now) and head on to the wildlife haven that is the Okavango Delta Our minds already blown by this unique natural landscape, it's off to the Okavango Delta, where we'll take an awe-inspiring game drive before settling into our exclusive Contiki Safari Camp. We'll be greeted with luxe two person dome tents - pre-erected of course - with stretchers, mattresses and linen. Dinner? How about a campfire meal as we swap tales under a starswept sky?

Day 13 : Okavango Delta

Day 14 : Okavango Delta to Maun

Accommodation : Island Safari Lodge (or similar)

Day 15 : End Maun

After a last breakfast together its time to say goodbye to new found friends and an incredible time in Botswana.

My Contiki Story

What to expect on Contiki’s Cape to Delta Safari

By Ian Kivell

Published on Jun 02, 2020 | 9 min

In December 2019, I spent an incredible few weeks exploring Africa on Contiki’s Cape to Delta Safari trip. From the bustling coastal cities of South Africa to the awe-inspiring vistas of the Okavango Delta, this trip was a dream come true.

The adventure begins

The adventure begins in Cape Town, the oldest town in South Africa. I arrived early, met my roommate and explored the area around the hotel. At the welcome meeting, I met the rest of the group and our Trip Manager, Alfie who would be with us throughout the trip.

After a quick round of introductions, and a brief overview of the trip itinerary, we went next door to the Mojo Market to get to know each other. This market was a really cool spot with 30 food stalls and a handful of bars. The best part of the market was the ocean view – oh and the live music every night. Alfie had reserved a table for all of us beforehand, so we were able to sit together and get to know each other a bit more. It’s so hard to believe at that moment, surrounded by a group of ‘strangers’, that we would become as close as family during the next 11 days of our trip.

The next day, we were off to a great start with a trip up Table Mountain by cable car. It was an amazing way to take in the views of Cape Town. After capturing the perfect Insta shots, we spent some time hiking around the trails. Our next stop included a visit to a local township. Townships are underdeveloped neighbourhoods in South Africa that were created as a result of Apartheid – a racial segregation policy that was only abolished in the 90s. The day ended with a marine cruise on the ocean and dinner at a local spot, Burger and Lobster .

Expect the unexpected

The next day was absolutely perfect! We started the day off with a beautiful drive along the cliffs of Chapman’s Peak to Cape Point. On the way, we stopped in at Boulder’s Beach for a hike. After spending some time hiking through some sandy trails, we reached a colony of penguins. Even though it was summer in South Africa, the water in December was quite cold, making it the perfect temperature for the penguins. We grabbed our fill of quacking, waddling, and wading (the penguins, not the people) and continued on to a winery to enjoy some of Africa’s best. If wine isn’t your thing, this trip is worth it just for the views, which were breathtaking and overlooked the Cape.

The next day, we hopped on our first flight, which was included in our trip to Johannesburg. Eager to get to our safari lodge, we wasted no time hopping in our vehicles to head to Kruger National Park . The day was a longer drive day with about seven hours on the road. It was all worth it though, because we got to visit parts of the park that almost no other people go to. Instead of battling hundreds of other cars to see the same baboon, we got to enjoy all the wildlife as if we were the only people around for hundreds of kilometres (which we may have been).

7 of the dreamiest beaches in Cape Town

Witness wildlife in kruger national park.

Our Cape, Safari and Falls trip switched gears over the next two days to focus solely on wildlife. The early mornings meant that we were able to see animals when they were the most active.

On our safari drives we had expert Local Guides with us to keep us informed with facts. We quickly became really good at spotting the BIG wildlife. How can you not notice an elephant six feet away? Having spent their entire lives living in South Africa, the Local Guides could read the more subtle signs of the bush. They would share interesting facts like how the changes in the direction of the wind affects the behaviour of giraffes or why flocks of wading birds walk towards lions as they approach. We were even lucky enough to see an impala give birth! It was one of the most memorable experiences from my trip and something none of the locals we were with had seen before.

After squeezing out every last drop out of our safari drive, it was time to head back to Johannesburg. On our way there, we broke up the long drive with a stop at Protrack Anti-Poaching Centre at the edge of Kruger. During this Contiki Cares experience, we learned about the aggressive anti-poaching efforts in Kruger National Park. It was an eye-opening impactful experience – one that made us more appreciative of the issues facing wildlife in this area of the world.

Visit one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World

After spending a night in Emalahleni, we continued on to Johannesburg, where we caught our second included flight up to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Home to one of the Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls is a sleepy town with laidback vibes. Not only does the area attract tourists, it also brings in wildlife too. Warthogs, baboons, and elephants can be spotted wandering around, making for a true African experience.

Get ready to be amazed by Victoria Falls. I was surprised to find that the approach to Victoria Falls was almost as impressive as the falls themselves. The pathways leading you to the falls are lined with dry African bushes that transform before your eyes into a lush rainforest – thanks to the constant mist of the thundering falls. Finishing off our first day in Zimbabwe, we took a sunset cruise down the Zambezi river, spotting hippos, birds and other wildlife, while enjoying snacks and drinks.

Get ready for adventure in Victoria Falls

The next day was all about pumping your adrenaline with adventure activities. There were so many options to choose from. You could go white water rafting on the Zambezi River or bungee jumping and zip-lining from the bridge that connects Zimbabwe and Zambia.

We then got to spend some time exploring Victoria Falls. The town itself is beautiful and one of the safest towns in Zimbabwe. Make sure to shop the markets and visit the famous Victoria Falls Hotel. If you’re looking for a place to eat, head over to River Brewing Company , a craft beer brewery and eatery just a stone’s throw from the hotel. That night we were treated to a traditional Boma dinner and dance, the perfect way to spend our last night in Zimbabwe.

In case you ever wondered, these are the 7 natural wonders of the world

The next day, you can take a breathtaking helicopter flight over Victoria Falls. On the ride, you might even be lucky enough to spot wildlife in neighbouring Botswana’s National Parks. Speaking of Botswana, it’s time to say goodbye to Zimbabwe and head over to its neighbour, Botswana. The drive is a quick one, so there’s lots of time to enjoy an afternoon game drive through Botswana’s Chobe National Park.

Get your safari gear for Chobe National Park

Chobe National Park is home to the highest density of elephants in Africa. With so many animals in such a relatively small area, Chobe gave us some of the most jaw-dropping experiences of the whole trip. You can spent your last day in Chobe however you’d like. Most of us spent our time around the pool, recounting our favourite moments from this epic adventure.

At night, you can opt in to take a cruise along the Chobe river, spotting hippos and crocodiles in the water, and countless wildlife species along the shores. I couldn’t have dreamt of a better way to spend to say goodbye. The next morning is full of goodbyes, tears, hugs, and promises to stay in touch. You can finish your trip at the nearby Kasane Airport or pick up a free transfer back to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Get those perspective-bending snaps on the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

Discover africa’s eden at the okavango delta.

This place was unreal! 15,000 kilometres of lush wetland with rivers, lagoons and reed beds forming a paradise for wildlife. When the delta floods in May, this place floods with wildlife. During this season the Delta carries half of Africa’s elephants at once!

Pack smart. Take half the amount of clothes and twice as much money as you think you’ll need. Check your adaptor to see if it has Africa’s power shape. I foolishly grabbed my international adaptor and packed it without looking at it. Turns out it fits plugs in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas, but not Africa! Don’t forget to bring bug spray and sun screen as you’ll need it on this trip.

In Cape Town , the Trip Manager will have reusable water bottles that filter water from any tap making it safe to drink. They’re an amazing way to avoid single-use plastic water bottles, so buy one at the beginning of the trip. Another tip is to give yourself a night or two at the beginning and end of the trip to adjust to the time change and relax. Use the last few nights to return to a favourite local spot or walking around, taking in the moment for yourself before heading home. You can even visit a neighbouring country like I did and return to Zambia.

A TRUE trip of a lifetime

Overall, Contiki’s Cape, Safari and Falls trip has the perfect balance of everything. You have the city life in Cape Town with shopping, nightlife, restaurants, penguins, and wine. There’s wildlife in Kruger National Park and Chobe National Park, giving you enough time to catch sight of the Big Five. Then you can unleash your wild side in Victoria Falls with zip-lining, bungee jumping, white water rafting, and helicopter rides. Southern Africa is home to some of the friendliest, most hospitable people I’ve met in the world. A trip here will be one you won’t soon forget. So if you’re thinking of travelling to South Africa, check out Contiki’s Cape, Safari and Falls trip for a trip of a lifetime.

Sweet swims and cool hikes: Why September may be the best month on Cape Cod

Something magical happens in September on Cape Cod . The big summer sideshow has shipped out of town, but guess what? It's still summer!

Suddenly, there's plenty of room at the beach, on the roads and in the clam shacks. September on Cape Cod offers spectacular and uncrowded delights: warm days, cool nights and perhaps the best swimming of the year.

The simple truth might be that almost everything is better on the Cape in September. Heck, you might be so inspired that you'll suddenly quote the poetry of Ralph Waldo Emerson , tossing out lines like "Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air's salubrity."

Or at least you'll have a blast exploring this beautiful peninsula. Here are some of our favorite things to do on Cape Cod in September.

Take a swimming safari

Before Labor Day, we are all bound by the cumbersome rules of beach stickers and entrance fees . But as September gathers steam, those rules fall away at most Cape beaches. That means you can visit those exotic beaches in other towns that you've heard so much about for the low, low price of free!

Sample the delights of Buzzards Bay at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth , or splash down in Wellfleet's awesome kettle ponds , including Great, Gull and Long ponds. Or try a little boogie boarding at epic oceanside locales like Nauset Beach in Orleans or Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro .

Try a long Cape Cod hike

The slightly cooler days of September offer perfect conditions for a longer than usual hiking adventure. You can either craft your own hike, perhaps working in long stretches of the Cape Cod Rail Trail or Cape Cod National Seashore beaches , or stick to something a bit more organized .

It's the perfect time of year to tackle the Seashore's Great Island Trail in Wellfleet , perhaps the signature long walk on Cape Cod. Depending on how much of the trail you bite off, a round trip hike could be around eight miles. Cooler temps are also conducive to attempting the legendary Province Lands hike in Provincetown that starts from the intersection of Snail Road and Route 6 — you'll see folks parked along the side of the highway.

Marsh appreciation month

The green/gold glow of Cape marshes in September is a sight to behold. Even non-artists might find themselves reaching for a palette and easel and creating a plein air masterpiece. And a marsh appreciation outing also brings wildlife and other natural beauty into focus.

Try a low tide walk out on the Bass Hole boardwalk in Yarmouth Port, which really puts you in the picture. Or sashay over to the Marsh Trail at Sandy Neck Beach Park in Barnstable. And there are also great marsh views at Mass Audubon's  Barnstable Great Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary .

Find the best fest

September is the perfect time to head out to a fun festival, make some new friends, check out local crafts, nosh on something yummy and enjoy a little music. And there are tons of cool events to choose from!

Highlights in September include:  Eastham Windmill Weekend , Sept 6, 7, 8, 2024 with events around town and at the Windmill Green off Route 6, the Cape Cod Wildlife Festival on Sept. 14 at Mass Audubon's Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary in Cummaquid, and the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival , Sept. 14 and 15, at the Harwich Community Center Field (100 Oak Street).

Keep the fun going with Truro Treasures , Sept. 20, 21, 22, with events around town including the famous Grape Stomp at Truro Vineyards & South Hollow Spirits on Sunday afternoon, and the Cape Cod Brew Fest on Sept. 21 at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in East Falmouth, and the Love Local Fest , Sept. 29, at Aselton Park in Hyannis.

The best Africa cruises for 2025 and 2026

Melissa Klurman

Nothing quite says "bucket list" like a cruise to Africa.

You get wildlife safaris, ancient wonders of the world and some of the most fascinating cultural epicenters on the globe all in one trip. Are you starting to understand why a cruise here is so unique?

Africa is a big continent, and you'll find almost as many ways to cruise as marvels to see. Whether you want to visit Africa's tropical Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean or prefer the dramatic red sands of Namibia on the Atlantic coast, you can do it on a cruise ship — even on the same itinerary.

And that's not all! You can book intimate river cruises on Botswana's Chobe River or Egypt's Nile River, a rite of passage for many a cruise fan. (We've highlighted Viking below for its vast number of sailings, but Lindblad/National Geographic, Uniworld and Avalon Waterways all offer Nile itineraries as well.)

Whether you're looking for an expedited South African highlights cruise or a multiweek African continent adventure, you can find a cruise itinerary to suit you. Here are our picks for the best Africa cruises in 2025 and 2026.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 11- to 13-night South Africa & Madagascar cruises

cape to delta safari

Norwegian Cruise Line has some of the most robust and varied Africa cruise options of all the big-ship lines, with 13 sailings ranging from 11 to 21 nights in 2025 alone.

Among the most popular offerings is the Cape Town to Mauritius (or reverse) route on Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Dawn. These 11- to 13-night cruises combine the highlights of Cape Town with the wildlife wonders of Madagascar. The latter is one of the most enthralling safari destinations in Africa; 90% of the plant and animal species on the island are endemic, including 103 varieties of lemurs. But Madagascar is also a destination that even hardcore safari enthusiasts often skip because flights and lodges are hard to book, making a cruise the perfect way to get there.

NCL's itineraries also visit Pointe de Galets, Reunion — a lush beach and rainforest area on the Indian Ocean. Norwegian Dawn's 12-night itinerary adds a stop in Maputo, Mozambique.

Who should go : The 1,944-passenger Norwegian Sky and 2,290-passenger Norwegian Dawn are some of the smallest and oldest ships in Norwegian Cruise Line's fleet. They suit cruisers looking for a more intimate experience than what you'll find on bigger ships. Africa cruises tend to draw cruisers who care more about the destinations they visit than onboard attractions, but the ships will still entertain you with multiple eateries and bars and lounges, several pools and whirlpools, a casino and a theater with nightly shows.

Azamara: 18-night Western Africa Voyage

cape to delta safari

Azamara offers an 18-night Western Africa Voyage sailing between the Canary Islands and Cape Town. The 704-passenger Azamara Quest calls on the ports of Dakar, Senegal; Banjul, Gambia; and Luderitz and Walvis Bay, Namibia, along the African coast. The ship also stops at the British-controlled island of St. Helena.

Book excursions to seek out the elusive wild horses of Namibia, take a sightseeing flight over the massive shifting sand dunes of Sossusvlei, race through the desert in a four-wheel-drive vehicle and explore the waterways and villages of Gambia.

Azamara also partners with Micato Safaris for pre- and post-cruise Africa programs to see the "Big Five" (Cape buffaloes, lions, rhinoceroses, elephants and leopards). You can book safaris in Chobe National Park in Botswana or Kruger National Park in South Africa.

Who should go : Azamara caters to affluent, well-traveled cruisers who enjoy smaller vessels, a country house ambience and itineraries that focus on destination immersion. (You won't find waterslides or roller coasters, and that's exactly how the line's fans like it.) Azamara creates an immersive African experience with its focus on longer stays in port; for example, the ship spends two full days in Walvis Bay, Namibia. Additionally, the line's complimentary AzAmazing Evenings program takes cruisers ashore to experience cultural performances in jaw-dropping locations, such as the "Desert Dinner & Fire spinners and Marimba Band" event in Namibia.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises: 16-night Shores of Madagascar: Cape Town to Port Louis cruises

cape to delta safari

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers a 16-night itinerary along the southern coast of South Africa and on to Mozambique and Madagascar, concluding in Port Louis, Mauritius. The 750-passenger Seven Seas Splendor departs Jan. 27, 2026, on this itinerary and then repeats the sailing in reverse, from Port Louis to Cape Town, on Feb. 12, 2026.

Along the way, Regent offers some unique shore excursions that set it apart from other lines. Highlights include safari game drives in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, from Richards Bay; cultural explorations of Durban, South Africa, with visits to Zulu villages in the Valley of a Thousand Hills; and birding in the remote Mayotte, French Comoros.

Who should go : Regent's all-inclusive luxury cruises — which include airfare, transfers, onboard beverages and dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi and unlimited shore excursions — have correspondingly luxurious prices. Passengers are mostly affluent professionals and retirees who enjoy the seamless ease of an all-inclusive sailing offering high-end service.

Fine dining fans will appreciate the multiple onboard dining options, including Chartreuse for fine French cuisine and Prime 7 with steakhouse menus. Other diversions on board include the sybaritic Serene Spa and a pool deck, plus boccie, a putting green and golf nets for sea day enrichment.

Oceania Cruises: 14-night Cape Town to Cape Town cruise

cape to delta safari

If you'd prefer a deeper exploration of southern Africa, Oceania Cruises' Cape Town to Cape Town cruise Jan. 19. to Feb. 2, 2026, explores South Africa's coast in an unusual up-and-back itinerary, first exploring the east coast up to Richards Bay, then heading to the island of Madagascar, then looping back to the mainland and stopping in Maputo, Mozambique, before returning back to Cape Town.

Highlights include Durban, with its golden beaches and enchanting Indian Market, and Port Elizabeth on the southern coast of South Africa, an area nicknamed the "Garden Route" for its verdant foliage. Port Elizabeth is also a popular migratory path for southern right whales that you might spot, along with schools of dolphins, as you sail.

Oceania offers longer Cape Town to Lisbon, Portugal, and Cape Town to Barcelona itineraries (as well as Lisbon and Barcelona to Cape Town sailings) of 25 and 26 nights, too. Ports include the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Along the way, you'll stop at Walvis Bay on the western coast of Namibia, with its iconic red sand dunes; here, you'll have a chance to see flamingos, pelicans and thousands of other migratory birds.

Who should go : Oceania Cruises offers a high-end cruising experience with a residential feel similar to staying in an elegant estate. The intimate 670-passenger Nautica features a relatively uncrowded setting, with a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than you'll find on mass-market vessels. On board, guests delight in several high-end restaurants offering gourmet cuisine and elegant accommodations.

Viking: 11-night Pharaohs and Pyramids cruise

cape to delta safari

Not all Africa cruises are on the ocean. A trip down the Nile River is a tick on many a traveler's wish list, and Viking offers one of the easiest-to-book options with seven ships sailing its Pharaohs & Pyramids cruises . In 2025 and 2026, sailings depart nearly every day in the October to March high season, though no sailings are scheduled for the second half of June through the end of July.

The round-trip Cairo sailings feel incredibly exclusive, with ships carrying just 82 passengers on board. The itinerary begins with several days in Cairo, where guests can visit the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx, museums and souks before sailing down the Nile. Your ship will linger multiple days in Luxor, Egypt, home of the Valley of the Kings; spend a day in Qena, Egypt, to see the Dendera Temple complex; and stop in the ports of Esna, Aswan, Kom Ombo and Edfu, Egypt.

Who should go : Adults-only cruise line Viking appeals to travelers who appreciate a relaxed onboard experience centered around learning about a destination via guest lectures — in this case, Egyptologists — and shore excursions. The cruise line's passengers tend to be retirement age or older.

Viking's fans love the ships' uncluttered Scandinavian-inspired decor and pricing that includes wine and beer with lunch and dinner, gratuities and one free shore excursion per port. The ships do not have an onboard casino or entertainment spaces beyond the main lounge area, but a shaded pool and sundeck offer a relaxing outdoor venue to watch the river scenery.

AmaWaterways: 9-night Discover Africa cruisetour

cape to delta safari

If you're someone who loves the equivalent of a travel buffet and appreciates having a little bit of every experience on your plate, then AmaWaterways ' incredibly unique Discover Africa cruisetour itinerary is for you. (AmaWaterways also offers Nile cruises.) For this journey, guests start with two full days of guided tours and three nights in a luxury hotel in Cape Town before flying to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and transferring to the Chobe River where you embark on the 28-passenger Zambezi Queen for a four-night cruise traversing the wildlife areas of Botswana, including safari drives into the savannah.

Then, it's back to Victoria Falls to see the thundering waterfall and explore the area by both steam train and smaller sailing vessel during your two-night stay. The adventure ends with a flight to Johannesburg, where you can continue your adventure independently or with a post-cruise extension or fly home.

Who should go : AmaWaterways attracts active guests who appreciate the multiple included excursion options at every port and the line's attention to both wellness and exceptional culinary offerings. The river cruise line's Africa sailings use a chartered ship, so you won't find its signature Wellness Host leading fitness classes or cuisine vetted by the prestigious culinary organization La Chaine des Rotisseurs. However, Zambezi Queen offers unique activities like fishing and bird-watching, as well as dining that AmaWaterways calls "five-star home-cooked cuisine." A local mother and son duo from a nearby village prepare all the meals for an authentic taste of the region.

Zambezi Queen also has a plunge pool on the sundeck, so you can soak up the African views while you take a dip. All rooms have balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, so you're never far from a safari view.
