Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ Press Tour Outfits Are Being Immortalised In A Book

As they should.

Margot-Robbie-1985-Barbie

2023 was defined by Barbie  and one of the biggest contributors to its unprecedented hype was Margot Robbie’s sartorial commitment to her world press tour looks. Curated by her stylist, Andrew Mukamal, the revolving door of historically accurate ensembles drove fans wild. So it only makes sense that they are immortalised in a book—as was Mukamal’s intention from the beginning, according to his announcement of the project, Barbie: The World Tour .

“This book was an idea I had in my living room when I started dreaming about Margot’s wardrobe for the ‘Barbie’ press tour in March 2023,” Mukamal wrote in an Instagram post. “I could have never imagined just a few months later, we’d be in the studio shooting this project with the team of our dreams… This book is a labour of love, dedicated to all the Barbie lovers and fashion fans around the world.”

The caption accompanied a reveal of the book cover, which featured a glammed-up Robbie posed as a doll in a pink Chanel skirt suit, surrounded by accessories.

The press for the Greta Gerwig -directed film saw Robbie, Gerwig, and some of the cast head out on a world tour. Stops included Australia, Canada, South Korea, Mexico, England and the U.S. And at each stop—as well as the appearances that surrounded the visit—Mukamal ingeniously sourced outfits that referenced various real-life looks worn by the Mattel doll.

Though the Barbie press tour was cut short due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in July, a press release for the upcoming book explained how it led to Robbie and Mukamal working with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot Robbie in the looks “exactly as they were curated”, including “ Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Streamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.”

“Our vision of Barbie, both as a character and the movie, is joyful and unapologetic,” Robbie explained in an interview. “So, here are these big, bold, joyful looks. They also have a lot of craft in them, and they are rooted in history, and brilliant designers worked really hard.”

Barbie: The World Tour is published by Rizzoli Publishing and is scheduled to hit shelves on March 8. It features a foreword by Edward Enninful, an introduction by Margaret Zhang and an afterword by Greta Gerwig.

We’re living in the age of “ Barbie ,” and nowhere has that been more evident than the custom fashions Margot Robbie and stylist Andrew Mukamal curated for the billion-dollar grossing movie’s press tour.

Since debuting the first look at “Barbie” at CinemaCon in April 2022, Robbie has rocked Barbiecore styles on nearly every red carpet and press appearance (most recently stunning in custom Armani inspired by 1977’s Superstar Barbie at the Golden Globes ), all of which will now be commemorated in the fashion photo book “Barbie: The World Tour.”

Popular on Variety

The press tour for “Barbie” sent Robbie, writer-director Greta Gerwig, and the cast on a summer world tour, with stops in Toronto, Canada; Sydney, Australia (Robbie is from Queensland); Seoul, South Korea; Mexico City, Mexico; Los Angeles, California; and London, England. At each of these stops — and at the airports — Mukamal sourced or commissioned dozens of outfits that were a nod to a look worn by the original doll.

But when the “Barbie” press tour was cut short due to the onset of the SAG-AFTRA strike in July, a press release announcing the book explains, Robbie and Mukamal “worked with renowned fashion photographer Craig McDean to shoot her in the looks exactly as they were curated: Schiaparelli in Los Angeles, Vivienne Westwood in London, vintage Chanel with matching Streamline luggage at the airport, and beyond.”

Vogue recently touted Robbie’s “Barbie” wardrobe as confirmation that “method dressing is here to stay,” but, for Variety’s recent cover story saluting LuckyChap as 2023 showpeople of the year, Variety posited that, in some ways, the looks were an extension of her vision as a producer.

In her eyes, the “experience” began the moment paparazzi captured her and Ryan Gosling filming a scene on the Venice Boardwalk, roller blading in ‘80s-style multi-colored spandex and neon yellow kneepads. Onscreen, Barbie is wrestling with the discomfort of being perceived for the first time and Robbie, too, was aware that they were being watched.

“That’s when we started entertaining the audience,” she explained. “We started crafting the marketing campaign before shooting began. It needs to build to crescendo, to have mystery. All the things that you’d put into a narrative story, we should be looking at that holistically for the campaign too.”

And promoting the movie is part of that experience.

“Our vision of ‘Barbie,’ both as a character and the movie, is joyful and unapologetic,” Robbie concluded. “So, here are these big, bold, joyful looks. They also have a lot of craft in them, and they are rooted in history, and brilliant designers worked really hard.”

The book hits shelves on March 19, from Rizzoli publishing, and features a foreword by Edward Enninful, introduction by Margaret Zhang and an afterword by “Barbie” filmmaker Greta Gerwig.

Every look from Margot Robbie's Barbie tour wardrobe

From vintage Chanel to custom pink Prada

preview for Barbie - Teaser Trailer 2 - (Warner Bros)

Robbie is joined by an all-star cast, with Ryan Gosling playing Barbie's love interest Ken, alongside many other famous faces – including Dua Lipa, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, Issa Rae and our summer digital cover star America Ferrera , to name but a few.

It's not unusual for celebrities to pay tribute to the project that they're promoting when it comes to red-carpet dressing (look to Halle Bailey's ocean-inspired Little Mermaid outfits as a prime example, or Jenna Ortega's goth glam Wednesday looks), so we expected nothing less than a Barbie- worthy press tour wardrobe from Robbie – but nothing could quite prepare us for the joyful ensuing parade of doll-inspired dressing, expertly curated by her stylist, Andrew Mukamal. While Robbie and the rest of the Barbie cast had to take a break from promoting due to the SAG strikes , she's now back in business, wearing more stylish looks fit for a doll. From pink Valentino polka dots to playful gingham Prada ensembles and some seriously desirable vintage Chanel, here is everything Robbie wore to promote the film.

Armani Privé

margot robbie golden globes

For the 2024 Golden Globes , stylist Andrew Mukamal dressed Robbie in a custom Armani Privé look inspired by the 'Superstar' Barbie from 1977. Crafted from pink shimmering sequins, the design featured the same V-neckline and tulle ruffled boa. Robbie finished the look with Manolo Blahnik heels and Lorraine Schwartz jewellery.

margot robbie

Margot Robbie perfected yet another Barbie look at the 2023 Gotham Awards; the actress channelled the "Black Magic Ensemble" doll from 1964, wearing a black Prada dress, leather gloves and an elegant sheer cape. Similar to the rest of her Barbie wardrobe , she teamed her outfit with a pair of Manolo Blahnik mules.

Robbie attended a special screening and Q&A in Hollywood wearing Sleeper's feathered pink pyjamas, which she styled with a coordinating woven bag and pink mules.

Bottega Veneta

margot robbie

Andrew Mukamal revealed on Instagram that his inspiration for this look was the 'Cherry Pie Picnic' Barbie from 2015. Robbie's Deadline Contenders outfit featured almost identical turn-up jeans by Bottega Veneta, a red belt and a tie-up floral shirt, along with Manolo Blahnik mules, her favourite woven bag (this time in red) and Anita Ko jewellery.

margot robbie

Margot Robbie put a Barbie spin on a smart-casual look to attend a special screening and Q&A at the Warner Bros studios in LA. The actress wore a bright pink Versace blazer, a corset top and classic blue jeans. She finished the look with pointed Manolo Blahnik pumps (pink, of course) and loose soft waves.

Margot Robbie's stylist Andrew Mukamal took to Instagram to share a glimpse at some of the unseen looks from her Barbie tour wardrobe (worn for interviews or less public press appearances – scroll through the carousel to see more), including a metallic pink Versace dress and a Clueless -worthy yellow Chanel two-piece. Many of the outfits were paired with her bespoke Manolo Blahnik collection, created specifically for this tour.

"Barbie is truly iconic, so when asked to provide shoes for the wonderful Margot Robbie, whom I adore, I wanted to update some of my most successful designs that have been in my collections for decades, with a Barbie twist of course," designer Blahnik told Bazaar . "Pink is one of my absolute favourite colours – from cerise to powder pink, I love them all – and so it has been a joy to reimagine these styles in a host of pink hues."

Vivienne Westwood Couture

margot robbie

For the European Barbie premiere held in London, Margot Robbie paid tribute to the late, great British designer Vivienne Westwood, wearing a couture gown modelled on the 'Enchanted Evening' doll from 1990. The corseted dress featured a draped side train, crafted in blush pink satin and embroidered white tulle, and was accessorised with ivory opera gloves, a pearl choker and a rose brooch.

Vivienne Westwood

barbie

Margot Robbie wore a second Vivienne Westwood ensemble while in London, attending the film's photocall in this printed skirt suit, worn with chunky platform heels and a square textured bag. She added Tiffany & Co jewellery to the look for an extra touch of sparkle.

Dilara Findikoglu

margot robbie

On the same evening, Robbie carried on the celebrations in a red corseted mini-dress by the Turkish-British fashion designer Dilara Findikoglu. Her party look was inspired by the 1962 "Brunette Bubble Cut" Barbie, who wore a red swimsuit. The look was accessorised with Assael jewels and a Maison Ernest satin bag.

Schiaparelli Haute Couture

margot robbie barbie

Perhaps Margot Robbie's most glamorous Barbie look of the entire tour was this black custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown. For the Los Angeles premiere of the highly-anticipated film, the actress wore a design inspired by the doll's 'Solo in the Spotlight' look from 1960. It featured a glittering strapless dress with a tulle hem and a red rose accent, worn with matching opera gloves and a sheer handkerchief. She finished her red-carpet look with a Lorraine Schwartz diamond choker necklace, a bold red lip and a sleek updo.

Emilio Pucci

margot robbie barbie

Margot Robbie's 'Totally Hair' Barbie look, based on the 1992 doll was just that; the actress wore her hair in impressive super-long waves, with an Emilio Pucci dress, pink Manolo Blahnik heels, a Chanel bag and Taffin jewellery.

The actress wore a neon pink corseted Balmain mini dress with silver statement earrings and a matching chain belt, to attend the Mexico premiere.

A more casual take on the Barbie wardrobe came courtesy of this Bottega Veneta look for a day in transit, complete with baby pink Manolo Blahnik mules and Jessica McCormack diamond earrings.

Vintage Moschino

margot robbie

Margot Robbie kept up her vintage style streak, wearing a Moschino skirt suit from the brand's spring/summer 2015 collection to the film's press conference in Seoul . In true Barbie style, she kept her accessories perfectly matching, with a coordinating heart-shaped bag and pink Manolo Blahnik mules.

margot robbie

For the Barbie premiere in Seoul, Robbie turned to Versace, a favourite brand in her press tour wardrobe. This look – based on another outfit worn by the original Barbie doll – featured a pink and white skirt suit with a matching boater hat, pointed pumps, a mini bag and a glittery pink phone.

margot robbie

The actress wore a second look from Versace at the premiere –a shimmering bodice and tulle skirt – also based on one of the doll's original designs. She wore her hair in the classic Barbie style of loose blonde waves, which fell perfectly over one shoulder.

margot robbie barbie tour

In-between red carpets, Robbie was seen wearing a vintage patterned Moschino mini-dress, from the brand's spring/summer 2019 catwalk show. In true Barbie style, Robbie relied on the power of accessories with a pair of white Manolo Blahnik heels and matching white-framed sunglasses , which are becoming a regular feature in her tour wardrobe.

Vintage Versace

Another vintage moment for Margot Robbie, this time in Versace. The look – from the archives of the Italian fashion house's autumn/winter 1994 collection – perfectly captures Barbie's aesthetic with a metallic pink pleated skirt and high-neck knit, paired with purple socks, white heels and Jessica McCormack jewellery.

margot robbie

While on stage at a Barbie fan event in Sydney, – joined by co-stars America Ferrera, Issa Rae and director Greta Gerwig – Robbie added a pair of white sunglasses to her vintage Versace look.

margot robbie

Yet another vintage Versace moment for the actress, who stepped out on the pink carpet in a blush chainmail Versace mini-dress, while attending a Barbie party in Sydney. The dress was originally worn by the model Claudia Schiffer in 1994.

Margot Robbie Is Dressing Like Iconic Barbies on the ‘Barbie’ Press Tour (Photos)

It’s literally Barbie IRL and we’re here for it

Barbie-Margot-Robbie

“Barbie” is making a splash on every stop of its press tour, most notably with its star and producer Margot Robbie paying homage to the film’s inspiration by dressing up as the most iconic iterations of the Mattel toy. The film is co-written and directed by Greta Gerwig and finds Robbie starring alongside Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Hari Nef and many others as various iconic Barbie dolls from the toy line’s history, and Robbie is taking that one step further by showcasing various Barbie outfits while doing press for the film around the world. From a classic 1960s swim look to newer references, check out Robbie’s picture-perfect adaptations of Barbie fits below.

“Barbie’s” leading lady kicked off the Warner Bros. Pictures press tour with a Barbie-esque polka dot Valentino mini dress, getting the look right down to the yellow purse, yellow bracelet and white heels.

At a promotional event in Bondi Beach, Australia, Robbie’s black and white striped mini dress referenced the first Barbie doll ever, released in 1959, who donned a retro one piece swimsuit. The “Barbie” star got it right down to the red lip and cat eye glasses.

Margot Robbie’s Latest Red Carpet Win Channels an ’80s Barbie

By Christian Allaire

Margot Robbies Latest Red Carpet Win Channels an 80s Barbie

Margot Robbie has been an unstoppable fashion force during her Barbie press tour. The star has paid homage to the famously stylish doll she portrays onscreen in a variety of ways, whether with a beachy gingham Prada look on the red carpet, or in a vintage Chanel travel outfit for the plane (both of them head-to-toe pink, of course). The star clearly understands the concept of Hollywood method dressing . For the film’s premiere in Seoul today, however, Robbie delivered a brand-new Barbie vibe all together. This time, she tipped her (actual) hat to an iconic iteration from the 1980s.

Margot Robbie

Styled by Andrew Mukamal , Robbie wore two different Versace looks for the red carpet that referenced the “Day to Night” Barbie, released in 1985. The original doll featured two outfits—the first ensemble a polished suit for day, the second a glitzy dress for night—and Robbie matched both moods perfectly. Her first, executive-realness look included a pink skirt suit with white lapels and a bowed blouse, finished with a bedazzled Judith Leiber phone bag (you know, like the huge cordless phones they used in the 1980s?). We don’t know what kind of office she’s headed to, but wherever she’s going, we want to work there, too!

Margot Robbies Latest Red Carpet Win Channels an 80s Barbie

Robbie’s “night” look, meanwhile, included Versace’s glitzy corset top paired with a full tulle skirt (rather Carrie Bradshaw, in fact). She accessorized with pink Manolo Blahnik mules—the stiletto sandal that she’s worn non-stop throughout her press tour (and in the film’s trailer, too).

This latest moment marks yet another red carpet win for Robbie. Which Barbie era will she tackle next? We demand to see her version of the 2001 Jam N Glam Barbie .

Margot Robbie's 'Barbie'-inspired Golden Globes and press tour outfits: All the photos

"Barbie" is up for several trophies this awards season.

Margot Robbie has channeled many iconic Barbie-inspired looks during the global press tour for "Barbie" in the past.

Continuing to celebrate her role and the success of the movie, Robbie appeared on the red carpet at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, donning a full Armani sequin outfit , a tribute to Barbie's 1977 signature superstar look.

Before the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists strike began on July 14, 2023, Robbie paid tribute to many famous Mattel dolls from the past while on the "Barbie" press tour to promote the film. For inspiration, Robbie replicated vintage looks pulled from the fashion archives.

For the European premiere of "Barbie" in London earlier this month, Robbie transformed into the 1960s Enchanted Evening Barbie doll.

Mukamal also shared another look from the same event that paid homage to the same Barbie.

Margot Robbie has been references iconic Barbie outfits on her Barbie press tour

Los Angeles, United States – 2015's Pink & Fabulous Barbie

To kick off the global Barbie press tour, Margot rocked up to the first press call wearing a pink polka-dot Valentino dress that her stylist Andrew revealed was inspired by the 2015 Pink & Fabulous Barbie doll.

Margot donned a slightly more modern version of the iconic polka-dot dress, but matched it with the same white pumps and yellow bag. Even her beaded chunky bracelet was worn on the left wrist, just like the Barbie doll!

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Andrew Mukamal (@andrewmukamal)

Sydney, Australia – 1959's Original Barbie

Next up? The all important, all iconic original Barbie from 1959.

If you cast your minds back to the first Barbie teaser that was released back in 2022, you'll remember that Margot has already pulled off this exact look as she portrays the very same version of the doll in the film.

But during a Barbie press event in her home country of Australia, she put a twist on the monochromatic striped swimsuit with a Hervé Léger bandage dress in the same pattern, complete with the white cat-eye sunglasses, gold hoops and black open-toed heels. And with her hair styled into that sleek pony? ICONIC!

Seoul, South Korea – 1985's Day to Night Barbie

Oh, y'all thought Margot would only be doing one look per event? This Barbie comes with a costume change! At the South Korean premiere for Barbie in Seoul, Margot and Andrew worked to pull off an absolutely genius reference to the 1985 Day to Night Barbie.

For the first look, Margot channeled businesswoman Barbie in a sleek Versace pink blazer and skirt, with every single accessory and outfit detail matching the original doll to a tee. That pink embellished '80s phone? Need it ASAP!

And for the second look, she switched it up in an almost identical pink dress and matching pink open-toe heels.

Seoul, South Korea – 1964's Sparkling Pink Barbie

Moschino? For a Barbie event? SAY LESS! While attending a press conference for the movie in Seoul, Margot wore an effortlessly chic, updated version of the same outfit worn by the 1964 Sparkling Pink Barbie doll.

Head to toe in that iconic Barbie-inspired Moschino pink, with a shorter hemline than the original and a similar cute pill-box hat, Margot delivered another flawless homage.

Mexico – 1992's Earring Magic Barbie

Every '90s baby who grew up with obsessed with Barbie surely must have this iconic doll somewhere in storage in their childhood home. The custom Balmain look worn by Margot is pretty much an exact replica of the pink mini dress that that specific Barbie wore.

Complete with the crimped hair, chunky silver belt and earrings, Margot is truly serving '90s nostalgia with this one.

Mexico - 1992's Totally Hair Barbie

Stepping out at another event in Mexico, Margot wore a printed Pucci minidress reminiscent of the iconic '90s version of the doll. And of course, pink pumps and the matching pink earrings. Slay.

Los Angeles, United States – 1960's Solo In the Spotlight Barbie

This Barbie is a glamorous icon! From the stunning black dress, open-toed shoes and gloves to the ponytail, red flower detail and pink handkerchief, Margot and Andrew nailed this stunning Schiaparelli look for the World Premiere of Barbie in LA.

London, UK – 1960's Enchanted Evening Barbie

Margot pulled out all the stops for the UK premiere of Barbie, dressed in Vivienne Westwood and dripping in glamour from head-to-toe.

That faux-fur moment? The pearls? The flower on the dress sitting in the exact same place as it does on the Barbie? Perfection!

Official Barbie premieres and press conferences aside, Margot has also been pulling references and delivering looks during junket interviews and appearances.

Even walking through the airports on her way to the next stop on the global press tour, she's been serving off-duty Barbie realness.

With plenty more pink carpets, premieres, interviews and appearances to come before the film is released on July 21st, there's loads more incredible looks from Margot and her stylist Andrew still to come.

Watch this space – we'll continue to update this article throughout the rest of the press tour.

With help from stylist Andrew Mukamal, Robbie has brought Barbie to life in a series of viral looks. Labels such as Moschino, Valentino and Versace have put their own spin on various iterations of the iconic doll.

Ahead, discover all of the details behind Robbie’s Barbie-inspired ensembles.

Los Angeles photocall

Paired with a yellow Rockstud handbag, the Australian actress was a spitting image of 2015’s “Pink & Fabulous” Barbie. Robbie’s accessories included white Manolo Blahnik pumps and a pearl bracelet by Assael.

Sydney photocall

Robbie evoked Mattel’s original 1959 doll in a black-and-white striped bandage dress by Hervé Legér. She added on white cat-eye sunglasses by Jaques Marie Mage, as well as a pair of open-toe mules by Manolo Blahnik. Spinelli Kilcollin crafted Robbie’s gold hoop earrings.

Seoul premiere

Inspired by 1985’s “Day to Night” Barbie, Robbie wore two custom Versace looks at the Seoul premiere of “Barbie” on Sunday. She first sported a retro skirt suit accessorized with a bedazzled ’80s cell phone clutch by Judith Leiber. Her vibrant ensemble also included a mini Versace La Medusa purse and a white boater hat.

Robbie then changed into a sparkling party dress, which featured a tiered skirt and a crystallized bodice with straps baring Versace’s trademark Medusa logo. Robbie carried the same purse, this time in a glittering shade of hot pink.

Custom Manolo Blahnik heels and pink rings by Taffin completed both looks.

Seoul press conference

Margot Robbie put a whimsical spin on ’60s suiting while attending a press conference for “Barbie” in Seoul on Monday. Her Moschino skirt suit was dotted with crystal embellishments, referencing 1964’s “Sparkling Pink” Barbie.

Robbie’s look included a matching heart-shaped purse and a bow-embellished pillbox hat. She also wore hot pink mules by Manolo Blahnik, completing her ensemble with Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

Mexico Premiere

Mexico photocall.

Robbie’s second “Barbie” ensemble in Mexico also channeled the 90s. The actress wore a printed Emilio Pucci minidress with a ruffled hem reminiscent of “Totally Hair” Barbie. Similar to the 1992 doll, Robbie wore her blonde tresses crimped. She also added on a pair of hot pink Chanel earrings.

Los Angeles Premiere

In perhaps her most glam press tour look yet, Robbie debuted a custom Schiaparelli creation in Los Angeles inspired by 1960’s “Solo in the Spotlight” Barbie. The actress’ sparkly tea-length gown included a flouncy tulle hemline embellished with a red rose applique. Robbie accessorized with black opera-length gloves, a pink handkerchief and over 350 carats of diamonds by Lorraine Schwartz.

European Premiere

Robbie touched down in London for the European premiere of “Barbie.” In one of her final press tour looks for the film, the actress evoked the 1960 “Enchanted Evening” doll. Robbie’s custom Vivienne Westwood ensemble featured a pastel corseted gown, a fuzzy stole and a chunky three-string pearl choker.

Margot Robbie's Barbie-est Barbie Press Tour Looks

It's a Barbie world. We're just living in it.

Getty Images

Barbie rave reviews are pouring in, and Margot Robbie stays winning. Not only is the star having the time of her life channeling the world-famous doll at the film's press events, but she's nailing Mattel-inspired looks at Barbie screenings around the world. From red carpet premieres to conventions, Robbie's Barbie looks have gone above and beyond. Robbie's 'fits on the Barbie movie press tour don't just adhere to the doll's signature shades of pink. Much like the highly anticipated film itself, Robbie's wardrobe has major layers.

At the European premiere of Barbie on Wednesday, July 12, Robbie was a vision in satin and tulle on the pink carpet at Cineworld Leicester Square in London. First off, the gown. Robbie wore corseted Vivienne Westwood in petal pale pink. This dress had it all: a vintage Barbie look it homaged , a rosette at the waist, and gauzy train. The "Enchanted Evening" look was accented with a fluffy tulle off-the-shoulder shrug, shoulder-length opera gloves, a three-strand Assael Pearls choker and sparkling Christian Louboutin pumps.

In a rare non-pink moment, Robbie stood out at the L.A. premiere of Barbie wearing an extravagant high-fashion replication of Mattel's 1960 "Solo in the Spotlight" Barbie . Wearing a Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown and opera gloves, Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, and Manolo Blahnik peep-toe heels, the Barbie star managed to look entirely the part without so much as an accessory in the iconic doll's signature shade.

On July 3, at a Barbie press conference in Seoul, South Korea, Robbie channeled retro Barbie vibes in a Moschino matching set. Not only did the bright pink look include a heart-shaped, studded purse, pillbox hat, and matching Manolo Blahnik peep-toe pumps, but it was a near-perfect replica of a vintage 'fit worn by Barbie herself .

The good times kept on rolling in Mexico City where Robbie paid homage to the bestselling Barbie of all time: 1992's Totally Hair Barbie . We weren't just in awe of her very '90s patterned Pucci minidress, pink Manolo Blahnik pumps, perfectly-matched Chanel bag, and Taffin jewelry.

Robbie committed to becoming an IRL doll and wore her hair in long, brushed-out curls nearly identical to Totally Hair Barbie's blonde mane. This look served and we ate it up. But we've only scratched the surface.

On Sunday, July 2, Robbie's stylist, Andrew Mukamal (who, frankly, deserves a Pulitzer Prize for all the historical context he's bringing to Robbie's looks) shared an Instagram post featuring a side-by-side comparison of the two designer 'fits Robbie wore to the Barbie premiere in Seoul, South Korea, alongside the vintage Barbie doll looks that inspired them.

Mukamal didn't just ensure that Robbie was dressed to the nines in Atelier Versace, but that her accessories, including a bedazzled first-gen cellphone and Manolo Blahnik heels — a Barbie tour staple — were also on point. Business Barbie would be proud.

On Friday, June 30, Robbie wore a glittering pale pink ensemble at the Barbie Celebration Party at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Australia. Her sparkling metallic strapless minidress from Atelier Versace's 1994 Fall/Winter collection stole the show, but her clear Manolo Blahnik pumps were just as on-brand.

Earlier that day, Robbie channeled both '90s supermodels and Barbie in a cropped sweater and metallic pleated skirt from Versace's 1994 Fall/Winter collection. Her white platform loafer heels were deliciously retro, especially when paired with pale fuchsia ankle socks.

Not only are Robbie's press looks meticulously "Mattel-ified," but she is living and breathing Barbie, down to her travel wear. Method acting is impressive, but method-dressing at the airport? Well, that's just next-level.

Splash News

Not only did Robbie wear a vintage Chanel jacket from the fashion house's Spring/Summer '96 collection while toting matching SteamLine luggage at the airport, but she posed in a pink polka dot Valentino cutout dress (with matching Manolo Blahnik pumps, 'natch) alongside a to-scale Barbie dream car along with the rest of the film's cast on Tuesday, June 25 at the official Barbie press junket in L.A.

On Thursday, June 29, Mukamal shared a photo on Instagram of Robbie posed on a balcony in an Hervé Léger bodycon mini dress and Manolo Blahnik peep toe pumps. The stripes and silhouette of the dress likely looks familiar to eagle-eyed Barbie historians, but for the uninitiated, Mukamal captioned the post, "'THE ORIGINAL' 1959." Swipe and you'll see a second pic of the first Barbie doll wearing a strikingly similar ensemble.

Robbie has been channeling everyone's favorite plastic doll since before we were even gifted a full-length Barbie trailer. Back in April, she wore a two-piece Prada matching set to CinemaCon. The vintage vibe came through loud and clear, from the gingham pattern on the bra top and miniskirt to the height and style of her pink heeled mules.

Just when you thought things couldn't get pinker, Robbie served even more Barbie realness. Before leaving CinemaCon, Robbie topped off the look with a pink plaid coat and carried a matching Prada bag. Swoon.

The truth is, Robbie has been serving Barbie as far back as January. At the 80th Annual Golden Globes, Robbie wore a custom Chanel gown that reportedly took over 750 hours to make. The pale pink halter gown, made of silk tulle and chantilly lace, was just the beginning of Robbie's red carpet road to Barbiedom.

On June 25, Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, America Ferrera and more stars from the Greta Gerwig-directed film united as they attended a photo call for the movie at Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills.

Keeping on theme with the movie, Robbie, a.k.a. Barbie herself, donned a pink polka dot dress as she posed next to her character's iconic pink convertible.

Meanwhile, Gosling donned his character Ken's bleached blond locks and a soft pink cardigan.

The costars previously showed off their best Barbiecore looks as they CinemaCon 2023  in Las Vegas in April, with Robbie wearing pink gingham and Gosling wearing a "Greta Gerwig" shirt in Barbie print.

The film started filming in June 2022 and we've been given many glimpses of what's to come since, including various trailers and photos of the incredible costumes .

During the film's latest Seoul premiere, Ferrera, Gerwig and Robbie were each gifted with a hanbok vest that perfectly matched their outfit.

Also during the Seoul event, Robbie was given a pink cake on stage as she celebrated her birthday.

Meanwhile, Rae stunned in a hot pink dress that matched perfectly with the Barbie logo behind her on the red carpet.

Blushing in Pink

During a fan event at Westfield Sydney on June 30, Robbie had a pink monochromatic moment as she donned a pink turtleneck sweater, a chrome pink skirt and a beaded bracelet.

Bold Prints

Her costars also went for bold looks as Ferrera donned a white top and blue trousers, Rae wore a printed jacket and Gerwig donned a pink power blazer.

Classic Barbie

As the Australian native did press in Sydney, she channeled the original 1959 Barbie with a custom black and white Herve Leger dress, complete with matching heels and white sunglasses.

Barbies at Bondi

Rae, Gerwig, Robbie and Ferrera were all smiles as they did press for the movie at Icebergs Bondi in Sydney, Australia. They made sure to capture a selfie in front of the iconic Barbie pool.

Welcome to Kenada

In honor of Gosling and Simu Liu's Canadian heritage, the film held a special press day in Toronto, Ontario on June 28, which they perfectly dubbed as a "Kenada" celebration. The actors wore bright pastels as they walked the pink carpet and posed for photos.

A Picture-Perfect Duo

Gosling and Robbie, a.k.a. Ken and Barbie, were all smiles as they posed together on the red carpet in front of the iconic Barbie logo.

Gosling gave his best Ken smolder as he posed during the photo call. He even wore a light pink cardigan for the special occasion.

Goofing Around

Jon Kopaloff/Getty

McKinnon and Ferrera couldn't hold it together as they posed for photos together. While the Saturday Night Live alumna rocked a gray suit, the Ugly Betty actress donned a stunning white dress with lace detailing.

Hugging It Out

Robbie was seen greeting Gosling with a hug as the cast joined together on the red carpet.

Los Angeles Bound

@barbiethemovie/Instagram

The Barbie movie Instagram account shared this cute photo of Robbie in Los Angeles as they announced that the press tour for the film had officially kicked off on June 26. "It’s the best day ever!" they captioned the photo of Robbie wearing a pink two-piece with white sunglasses.

Going Full Barbiecore

Gosling and Robbie pulled off Barbiecore perfectly as they attended CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas in April. While Robbie wore pink gingham like her character, Gosling paired a bright pink jacket with a t-shirt that read "Greta Gerwig" in Barbie font.

Zendaya discusses 'method dressing': Here's who else has themed their red-carpet looks

From margot robbie to blake lively... the a-list's press tour outfits are being heavily influenced by their film roles.

Zendaya discusses 'method dressing': Here's who else has themed their red-carpet looks

If you hadn't noticed, Zendaya's wardrobe has been very tennis-coded recently.

So far she has 'aced' her fashion choices for the Challengers press tour with looks such as her Wimbledon-white custom Thom Browne gow n boasting racquet motifs, and Loewe heels featuring realistic tennis balls on the stems.

The actress has been showcasing a fascinating approach to her public appearances known as "method dressing," where her wardrobe directly reflects the themes and persona of her film roles.

In an interview with BBC’s The One Show Zendaya revealed that she has been practising “method dressing” and she’s been doing it for years. "My stylist Law and I, we've been working together since we were 14 and we kind of did kind of by accident back on Greatest Showman… like ‘method dressing’ and kind of being inspired by the film."

US actress Zendaya poses during a photocall for the release of the movie 'Challengers' directed by Luca Guadagnino on April 8, 2024 in Rome.

This theme continued through Zendaya’s press tours for other major films. For the "Spider-Man" series, Zendaya notably wore a web-themed gown, aligning her look with the film’s superhero narrative. During the "Dune" premiere, her outfits took on a sci-fi aesthetic, mirroring the futuristic and otherworldly vibe of the movie, enhancing the immersive experience she aims to create through fashion.

Zendaya also explained that, "Fashion has always been something that I've kind of used as an outlet or as a tool. I think ultimately, I am a more shy person. So it allows for me to kind of create this persona, this character that I get to live in for the day."

What is 'method dressing'?

Now it seems that there is actually a name for the phenomenon of theming your press tour wardrobe around your movie’s character. Method dressing is when an A-lister’s red-carpet looks are subtly inspired by their film roles. Zendaya is a prolific method dresser thanks to Law Roach but she’s not the only actress who has been “method dressing.” Margot Robbie iconically did it during her entire Barbie press tour, and her looks were so on point they have even been imortalised into a coffee table book .

Amber Heard did it for Aquaman, and Blake Lively is a serial “Method dresser.” Likewise Halle Bailey press tour for The Little Mermaid was filled with plenty of mermaid-core ensembles.

We look back at a few of our favourite “method dressing moments” on the red carpet:

Halle Bailey attends the UK Premiere of "The Little Mermaid" at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on May 15, 2023 in London, England.

Why Xi Jinping Is Meeting With Taiwan’s Ex-President

China is using talks between its top leader and Ma Ying-jeou to signal a willingness to engage with Taiwan — but only on its terms.

A large screen shows two men in suits shaking hands.

By Chris Buckley

Reporting from Taipei, Taiwan

When China’s leader, Xi Jinping, and then-President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan shook hands in Singapore back in 2015, they each extolled their meeting — the first top-level talks between the rival governments — as a breakthrough that could pave the way to a durable peace , ending decades of enmity.

But on Wednesday, as the two men met again in Beijing, the prospects for an amicable settlement over Taiwan’s future seemed more distant than ever.

Mr. Ma, who pursued closer engagement with China during his eight years in office, is no longer president of Taiwan. Fewer and fewer Taiwanese people now share his belief that Taiwan must see its future as a part of a greater China.

Since Mr. Ma left office in 2016, Mr. Xi has frozen high-level contacts with Taiwan, sought to isolate it on the global stage and tried to intimidate it with a tightening military presence around the island. Mr. Xi is profoundly suspicious of Taiwan’s current leadership, which has sought to assert the sovereignty of the island democracy.

The meeting at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing was the first time that a Chinese leader has met a former president of Taiwan on Chinese soil. Mr. Xi and Mr. Ma held a handshake for around 15 seconds and smiled for the cameras. They then sat at a long table like two statesman entering negotiations, even though Mr. Ma has long been out of power.

In opening remarks, Mr. Xi praised Mr. Ma as a patriot who had promoted “peaceful development” across the Taiwan Strait, and he pressed Beijing’s position that Taiwan must accept that it is a part of China.

“Compatriots on both sides of the strait are Chinese,” Mr. Xi said. “The difference in systems does not alter the objective fact that the two sides of the strait are of one country and one nation.”

For Beijing, Mr. Xi’s show of amity with Mr. Ma was part of a strategy to set its terms for dealing with Taiwan’s next leader: the president-elect, Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing describes as a dangerous separatist.

In recent months, China has signaled how it could squeeze Mr. Lai’s administration — militarily, economically and diplomatically. It has brushed off Mr. Lai’s offers to talk as insincere.

On the other hand, Beijing has shown that it will court friendlier Taiwanese politicians, like Mr. Ma, who endorse the framework for relations that it demands: that both sides accept that they are part of one China, even if they differ on what that means. Mr. Xi noted that condition — called the “1992 Consensus” because of its year of origin — in his comments to Mr. Ma, and Mr. Ma also reaffirmed it.

Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, which oversees the island’s policy toward China, said that Mr. Xi’s language about the conditions for engagement was an “attempt to blot out our national sovereignty.”

China’s “immediate focus is to push the incoming Lai administration to adopt a more accommodating political stance on cross-strait relations,” said Amanda Hsiao , the senior analyst for China with the Crisis Group, an organization that seeks to defuse wars and crises. “Ma’s visit helps to underscore Beijing’s position that cross-strait dialogue is conditioned on acceptance of the idea that the two sides of the strait belong to ‘one China.’”

Taiwan and China have been at odds since the Communist revolution of 1949, when Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist troops fled to the island and made it their redoubt. Over time, the Nationalists stopped being Beijing’s archenemy and became its preferred dialogue partner in Taiwan, particularly during Mr. Ma’s time in office. The two sides built economic ties and edged toward talks over their political status and future, culminating in Mr. Ma’s 2015 meeting with Mr. Xi.

But the Nationalists have lost the last three presidential elections to the Democratic Progressive Party, which has cast itself as a defender of Taiwan’s democracy and rejects Beijing’s claim to the island. Since Mr. Lai was elected in January, defeating a colleague of Mr. Ma, China has stepped up its pressure.

In January, it moved to peel away one of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies: Nauru , which had been one of the dozen or so states that still maintain formal relations with the island.

In February, Beijing sent coast guard ships to patrol the waters near a Taiwanese-controlled island off mainland China, after two Chinese fishermen died nearby while fleeing a Taiwanese coast guard vessel. China continues to buzz the skies near Taiwan with military planes almost daily, and many analysts expect China’s People’s Liberation Army to stage major exercises before, and especially after, Mr. Lai’s inauguration in May.

Beijing has also tried to use Mr. Ma’s trip to undercut Mr. Lai’s victory in the eyes of the domestic Chinese audience, and in particular the country’s fervent nationalists, said Chien-wen Kou , a professor at National Chengchi University in Taipei who studies the Chinese Communist Party.

“The chances of restoring official dialogue are not high,” he said. “Inviting Ma Ying-jeou to visit China is also intended to demonstrate that Lai Ching-te, in the Chinese Communist Party’s telling, represents only a minority of public opinion in Taiwan.”

Tensions with Taiwan also influence China’s relations with the United States, the most important backer of Taiwan’s security. In a phone call with President Biden last week, Mr. Xi reiterated that Taiwan was of the utmost importance to Beijing, describing it as “the first red line that must not be stepped over in China-U.S. relations,” according to the official Chinese summary of their call .

“China will not sit back passively in the face of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist activities and external encouragement and support for them,” Mr. Xi said .

By contrast, Chinese state media have highlighted Mr. Ma’s tour to make the case that Beijing has plenty of friends in Taiwan. The reports on Mr. Ma’s 11-day trip to China, with a delegation of Taiwanese students, have covered stops at heritage sites, with the students touring the Forbidden City and taking selfies on the Great Wall.

Mr. Ma’s itinerary is centered on one theme: that Taiwan is part of a greater Chinese nation, united by culture and history, if not politics. In northwest China, Mr. Ma paid his respects at a memorial to the Yellow Emperor , the fabled ancestor of the Han people, the dominant ethnic group in China and Taiwan.

Especially in retirement, Mr. Ma has become a vocal proponent of the view that Taiwan is historically and culturally part of China, and should accept that closer ties with the mainland are part of its destiny.

“If war breaks out between the two sides of the strait, that would put an unbearable burden on the Chinese nation,” Mr. Ma said to Mr. Xi. “The Chinese people on both sides of the Strait absolutely have the wisdom to peacefully handle the various disputes and avoid going toward conflict.”

Mr. Ma said Taiwan should accept the notion that the two sides are part of “one China.”

That view, however, does not reflect broader Taiwanese sentiment.

Most Taiwanese people reject the idea of unification with China, and accept their island democracy’s ambiguous status quo of being self-ruled but not recognized as an independent country by most governments.

People in Taiwan increasingly describe themselves as exclusively Taiwanese , instead of Chinese. Even within Mr. Ma’s Nationalist Party, many politicians, including its recent presidential candidate, Hou Yu-ih, have been notably more wary of China.
