The Bike Town

Not using a bike in Malmö is like not using a boat in Venice.

Malmö is practically designed for biking. Named the best bike town in Sweden time and again, there is certainly good reason for this. With more than 500 km of bike lanes and no hills there is only a short bike ride to most things in town - the city centre, the beach, shopping, parks or restaurants are all within 15-20 minutes from more or less anywhere. Therefore we find it unquestionable that the best way to see Malmö is with a local guide and a bike ride. With the bike you get out in the open, can easily reach sights and places, and get to view the town as the locals do it, from the saddle.

About Malmö Bike Tours

We have used bikes to show Malmö to visitors since 2011.

This makes us the second longest running bike tour operator in the Öresund region and the longest running on this side of the bridge. Our success is based on our knowledgeable guides who will tell the story of Malmö in an entertaining and accessible way without compromising with the content. For visitors with special interest we always try to adapt our tour, even for small private groups. Welcome to Malmö Bike Tours; we hope you will enjoy biking with us.

Wheel your way through Malmö

Sibbarps beach in Malmö, Skåne

Cycling in Malmö gives you a whole new perspective. You immediately enter the local rhythm of this bike-friendly city, free to explore its every nook and cranny at your leisure.

Cycling in Malmö is easy as the city is quite flat with an extensive network of bike paths – 515 kilometres to be exact! Malmö cyclists tend to approach cycling with an easy-going manner, so do as the locals do. No need to rush, take your time and take in the scenery and relaxed vibe of this laid-back southern Swedish city.

You can hire a bike at Travelshop on Carlsgatan 4A, and the helpful staff will provide you with maps and route planning too. Many hotels also offer bikes for rent, or download one of a number of bicycle apps. The city really does make getting around by bike a breeze.

Here are a few suggestions for places to visit as you discover Malmö on two wheels.

Ribersborg park and beach have all kinds of outdoor activities and waterside cafes perfect for enjoying an invigorating cup of coffee with a stunning view. The Ribersborg bike path winds along the beach with vistas of wide-open fields and the Öresund Sound. There are wonderful photo opportunities here, including the city’s iconic Turning Torso building at your back and the Öresund Bridge ahead in the distance, which connects Malmö to the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

Limhamn Harbour

The Ribersborg bike path continues along the sea and fields, and if you follow the “ Sydkustleden ” bicycle signs going south, you will wind your way to Limhamn Harbour in no time. From here, you can check out the boats and marina and get a closer look at the nearly eight kilometre-long Öresund Bridge. This graceful, award-winning bridge – the longest of its kind in Europe – was opened to traffic in 2000.

Sydkustleden

The Sydkustleden is a well-marked bicycle path divided into six sections running throughout the Skåne region. It offers easy access to some of Sweden’s finest beaches and most charming neighbourhoods and towns.

Head north of Malmö for about 20 kilometres and you’ll reach Långa Bryggan, the Long Pier, in the beach town of Bjärred. It wins the prize as Sweden’s longest pier, stretching 574 metres into the Öresund Sound. At the tip of the pier is a traditional swimming facility with saunas, a restaurant and magnificent views. This is the perfect place for a refreshing dip in open-air baths.

Slottsträdgården

Malmö’s many parks are perfect for a leisurely ride. The 8.4-acre Kungsparken with its imposing Malmöhus Castle, is no exception. Coast your way gently around the sites of Malmö’s first public park. In addition to the castle, the park includes a windmill, canals, a cast-iron fountain from 1882, Ernst Billgren’s captivating “Diana” sculpture and the magical Slottsträdgården, or castle gardens. These colourful gardens are tucked away behind tall hedges that shelter a profusion of blossoms and herbs, along with a lovely café.

How to plan a design-focused cycling tour of Malmö, Sweden's third-largest city

With sinuous canals, half-timbered houses and well-connected cycleways, this bastion of Swedish design is best explored by bicycle.

Ringed by the waters of the Baltic, the Kattegat and the Øresund, Malmö is Sweden’s third-largest city. Originally part of Denmark, it became Swedish in 1658. Today, you get the sense that the southern port city is thumbing its nose at both Copenhagen and Stockholm by remaining far cheaper to live in than either capital — and in doing so, it’s attracted a crowd of dedicated creatives unafraid of experimentation.

Great design is the lifeblood of Malmö — right down to the layout of its bike paths, earning it a reputation as one of Europe’s most bicycle-friendly cities. While you’ll find many of Malmö’s treasures around the walkable Gamla Staden (‘Old Town’), renting a bike will allow you to capture the full sweep of the city. Pedalling from bohemian Möllevången to ultramodern Västra Hamnen, you’ll witness the complete evolution of southern Swedish design — from its origins in the courts of kings right up to the present day.

1. Mitt Möllan

Pick up a bike at one of Donkey Republic’s many rental stations and head to Mitt Möllan, a collection of independent design boutiques in multicultural Möllevangen. Browse handmade North African ceramics at La Kasbah and rune-stamped rings at Pill & Punch before stopping for a bite in the food court, where you’ll find couples sharing bao buns and bento boxes beneath paper mobiles crafted by Swedish designer Egil Jansson.

2. Artibus Malmö

This artist cooperative provides studio space for 30 of Malmö’s ceramicists. Members range from hobbyists to seasoned professionals, with many selling   their reactive-glaze vases and hand-thrown tableware in the shop. The space is usually only open on the first weekend of every month and on weekends throughout December, though it can sometimes be visited outside of these times if you enquire in advance.

3. Moderna Musset

Cross into the Gamla Staden (Old Town) for Malmö’s main contemporary art museum. Housed in a former electricity plant that opened in 1901, it was given a modern makeover in 2008 by Swedish architect firm Tham & Videgård, who replaced its industrial brickwork with a striking electric orange facade. The upstairs galleries stage rotating exhibitions, while the boutique sells minimalist mobiles and other art-themed homeware.

two men walking beside their bikes in the city

4. Form/Design Centre

Don’t leave the Old Town without paying a visit to Malmö’s unofficial design headquarters. A workshop and gallery space dedicated to all things craft, it hosts regular exhibitions on thought-provoking topics such as sustainability and semantics. The shop is packed with independent Swedish design, with globular glass sculptures by lighting brand Swedish Ninja sitting alongside traditional throws by Klippan Yllefabrik.

5.   Malmöhus Castle

A museum of two halves, this vast and varied labyrinth displays everything from stuffed leopards to leopard-skin coats. The upper level holds a plethora of highly functional household furnishings and decorations from the 1950s’   ‘golden age’ of Scandinavian design. You’ll also find a recreation of an interior from the Gustavian Era (1772-1809), a period many historians claim laid the foundations for 20th-century Swedish design.

End with dinner at Aster, a design-focused grill restaurant where the dishes are as aesthetically pleasing as the berrylike lighting fixtures. Expect artfully charred skewers garlanded with herbs and vegetables from the owners’ garden. It’s located in the Västra Hamnen (Western Harbour) and presided over by the Turning Torso, a 623ft-high, twisting skyscraper by Spanish sculptor and architect Santiago Calatrava.

Please note that e-bikes are heavier than normal bikes and given the higher speed possible, should only be ridden by confident cyclists.
