Is It a Good Time to Visit Colorado in November?

Wondering when to visit Colorado ? Well, November is an awesome time to visit Colorado if you like snow-capped peaks and wintery fun!

November in Colorado is also a great time to check out the Western Slope and 4 Corners Region. The sweltering summer heat has gone, but on a sunny day it can still feel quite pleasant in these areas.

It’s not quite as happening as the winter or summer months, but it’s a great time to take advantage of fewer crowds and cheaper lodging prices.

And the answer is yes, especially at higher elevations. While Denver and the foothills might be totally dry or have a blanket of snow (it really could go either way), you should definitely plan for snow in the mountains in Colorado in November.

Colorado weather in November can get cold, so you should definitely pack a puffy and other warm layers. In Denver, the high average is in the 50s in November, with lows getting down into the 30s at night, but expect it to be much colder in the mountains.

What is Colorado Like in November?

Visiting Colorado in November is an excellent way to avoid the summer crowds. While most ski resorts will be open, November is still early season for Colorado skiing, so the lift lines should be shorter.

The hike to Dream Lake and Emerald Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park is especially gorgeous with a dusting of snow on the ground.

November is also a more affordable time to visit Colorado since it’s shoulder season – the fall colors have passed but ski season isn’t yet in full swing.

Where to Ski in Colorado in November

The powder days might not be plentiful yet on the slopes in Colorado in November, but you’ll still find plenty of open runs at the resorts. Here are some of the best places to ski in Colorado in November.

Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area

Just a quick jaunt from Denver, both Arapahoe Basin (known as A-Basin by locals) and Loveland Ski Area would make great day trips for some skiing.

They are both around an hour away, so you can easily get in some laps while still having plenty of time to explore more in Colorado in November.

Keystone Resort

Keystone Resort offers some of the best skiing near Denver and opens each year in October.

Their snow-making operation ensures the slopes will be good to go in November, no matter what Mother Nature does.

Breckenridge

Breckenridge is slightly farther away from Denver and typically opens a little later than the closer resorts.

But Breck should be open by mid-month, so you can still get a start on early-season skiing in November, and you’ll find lots of other things to do in Breckenridge in winter .

One of the most popular ski areas in Colorado, Vail also typically targets mid-November for ski season opening day. Vail is definitely a winter wonderland, so visiting Vail in winter is a wonderful experience.

Steamboat typically doesn’t open until late November, but you can still sneak in some skiing if you plan your visit to Colorado around Thanksgiving or later. You can also check out one of the best hikes in Steamboat Springs if there’s no snow on the ground.

Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek also targets an opening day right before Thanksgiving.

Make your November visit into a romantic getaway in Colorado by cozying up at the Frisco Inn on Galena which has hot tubs and saunas to warm up après ski.

• Crested Butte

Another resort that opens in late November is Crested Butte. CB, as it’s referred to locally, is one of the best mountain towns in Colorado and makes a great Colorado road trip from Denver.

Exciting November Events in Colorado

November brings the beginning of the holiday season and lots of fun events to Colorado, from light shows to gift markets and more.

Blossoms of Light at Denver Botanic Gardens

One of the coolest holiday events in Denver is the stunning light display at the Botanic Gardens. Blossoms of Light begins in mid-November, and it is truly a must-see attraction in Colorado in November.

Local Tip: All tickets for Blossoms of Light need to be purchased in advance for timed entry. No tickets are available onsite.

Denver Christkindlmarket

Another signature holiday seasonal event in Denver is the Christkindlmarket , which opens mid-November.

The lively market is located in Civic Center Park and features local and European craft and food vendors, plus lots of live entertainment. Admission is free.

Colorado Country Christmas Gift Show

For more holiday spirit, head to the Colorado Country Christmas Gift Show in Colorado Springs.

You’ll find plenty of gift ideas, as well as holiday home decor and seasonal foods, and Santa Claus will make an appearance. The show runs from Nov 10-12, 2023, and is open to the public.

Local Tip: While you’re in Colorado Springs, make time to explore the hiking trails at Garden of the Gods , which will be lovely in November.

Santa’s Lighted Forest at Georgetown Loop Railroad

Take a nighttime ride on the Georgetown Loop Railroad in November and experience the sparkly spectacle of Santa’s Lighted Forest .

Local Tip: You need a permit for the Hanging Lake hike .

Local Tip: Hanging Lake has been experiencing temporary closures due to trail maintenance from the 2021 landslides. Always check on the permit website for the most accurate and up-to-date info!

Visit a National Park for Free on Veterans Day

On Veterans Day (November 11), all national parks in Colorado have free entry for everyone, making it the perfect time to visit Rocky Mountain National Park , Black Canyon of the Gunnison , Mesa Verde, and Great Sand Dunes.

Colorado State Parks also offer free admission to all veterans and active duty members of the military, military reserve and National Guard on Veterans Day.

Local Tip: Do be aware that free days in the park mean a high number of crowds. Plan to get there early if you don’t want to wait in a long line to get in!

Visit the Colorado National Monument

The Colorado National Monument is truly a hidden gem. Explore red rock country with steep canyons, rock spires, and inspiring desert landscapes.

November is an amazing time to visit this area because it’s not too hot (like it is during the summer). From scenic drives to awesome easy and moderate hikes, the Monument is a great way to spend the day!

November is a perfect time for travelers who are looking to spend less on their vacation and participate in some of the cold weather events before the Winter crowds come. It’s also a great time for those looking to have a very relaxing trip in the Rockies.

Colorado Weather in November

Colorado Weather in November starts to get chilly, seeing average daily highs in the high 50’s°F (13°C) and average daily lows in the high 30’s°F (3°C) across the state. Most higher altitude locations will have significantly lower temperatures than low altitude locations. It’s best to prepare your wardrobe like you would in the Winter months, with some lighter layers for random warmer days.

Rain is coming to a stop as the snow takes over, with rolling storms coming in sporadically. Clouds will begin to blanket Colorado, with early November seeing clearer days and late November experiencing very foggy days with low cloud cover. The winds also begin to pick up in this month, though they won’t reach their full power till January.

No matter the time of year, altitude will always be a factor when traveling to Colorado. Some towns like Alma have an elevation of 10,300′ and others like Wray have an elevation of over 3,000′. As a matter of fact, altitude sickness affects nearly 10% of all visitors. You can prepare your body by eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, sleeping well, resting frequently and avoiding alcohol.

Colorado Affordability & Crowds in November

Colorado crowd levels in November come to one of the lowest points in the year. Though the holiday season is quickly approaching, this month has the lowest attendance for the Fall season. Cities across Colorado will experience this decrease in visitors, making it an optimal time to get some last minute hiking or first time skiing in before the weather gets cold and the crowds roll in.

Hotel rates will vary by city, with most ski towns offering a wide range of rates, small towns being the cheapest and the capitol city of Denver averaging around $150 – $200 per night for the best hotels. Booking hotels, restaurant reservations, excursions and tours will be pretty easy this month, although some of the smaller towns could have hotel and restaurant closures before the ski season begins.

Colorado Snow & Skiing in November

Colorado snowfall in November becomes heavier and more prevalent, bringing ski runs their best conditions since Spring. Some areas will definitely see more snowfall than others, especially if they are located at higher altitudes. Since snowfall can be sporadic, so most ski runs will be making snow to accommodate guests.

Most ski resorts will begin to open this month, usually after Thanksgiving. The best part about coming in November is that there will be fewer people on the lifts and the runs, even though some lifts and runs may be closed at this time. Ski passes will also be discounted in some areas, making your trip a little cheaper than peak season.

Best Colorado Ski Resorts in November

Arapahoe Basin & Loveland

Both of these excellent ski areas are located in Dillon, CO in the Arapaho National Forest. Both are more suitable for a quick casual ski trip where you aren’t in it for frills or expensive meals. Expect to stay outside of the area and travel in to ski each day. In November, the snow on the ground might be lighter at the beginning of the month and thicker at the end of the month.

Loveland has 1,800 acres of skiable terrain and a summit elevation of 13,010′. It’s said to be one of the best places for guaranteed snow early in the Fall season. They have great options for beginners and experienced skiers with both the Valley and Basin ski areas.

The Valley has it’s own lifts for novice skiers and offers a safe space for practice, while the Basin has wide open runs, steep drops and exhilarating trails. There are also On-Mountain Cabins available for rent, an on-mountain restaurant and a child care facility at the base.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area is highly regarded as one of the best places to ski year round. Arapahoe Basin offers the ultimate Rocky Mountain experience with some of the lowest crowds and most incredible landscape views. It’s equipped with 1,428 skiable acres with a summit elevation of 13,050′. It’s appropriately nicknamed “the Legend” for it’s epic terrain that appeals best to intermediate and advanced level skiers.

Keystone Resort

Keystone is located in the high country of Colorado and is often one of the first resorts to open each ski season. Most years, Keystone will open in late October, but they wait some years until November if snowfall comes late. The resort comes with six different areas for expert jumps, moguls and rails with a summit of 11,980′. Skiers of all levels will find a sweet spot inside the 3,180 acres of terrain at this resort.

Breckenridge

Breckenridge Ski Resort boasts one of Colorado’s biggest ski areas with 2,908 acres of skiable terrain, a summit elevation of 12,998′, and the longest run at 3.5 miles long (most resorts have 2 mile long runs). There are suitable runs for all levels of skiers, including a 3,398 vertical drop, a 22′ superpipe and 187 different trails to experience.

The ski season at Breckenridge usually begins in early November. November is the optimal time to go before the crowds pour in, since Breckenridge is one of the most visited ski resorts in the state. With 11 on-mountain restaurants to choose from, the Gold Runner Alpine Coaster and over 150 boutiques in the shopping area, there’s plenty of entertainment to fuel your vacation. 

Vail is considered one of the classiest, most upscale ski resorts in Colorado, drawing thousands from all over the world to it’s beautiful slopes. The ski season in Vail usually begins in the middle of November when the snows have had time to build up on the mountain. It’s got an 11,250′ summit with over 5,000 acres of skiable terrain.

Vail is one of the best places for both skiers and non-skiers to enjoy. Skiers will love the various terrain that accommodates all levels, as well as the 7 miles of back bowls to explore. Non-skiers will appreciate the two main base areas with heated walkways, excellent shopping and dining options, along with beautiful luxury resort accommodations.

Steamboat Resort is one of the best family-friendly vacation destinations in Colorado. There’s so much for parents with kids to enjoy, ski classes for beginners and lots of greens for young skiers. The ski season also opens mid-November and draws visitors of all ages and abilities to it’s nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain.

Beginners will have fun on the open green runs at the top of the summit, with an elevation of 10,568′, which features smooth terrain and intermediate tree runs for more adventurous types. Expert level skiers will appreciate the bump runs with moguls and many blue-black slopes on the mountain. The resort is often referred to as “Ski Town, USA” as there are many Olympians that practice here during the ski season.

Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek is essentially an offshoot of Vail and is considered a luxurious ski resort on it’s own. Beaver Creak is built for vacationers who love to ski but enjoy loads of entertainment, dining experiences and other excursions throughout their trip. The last week of November is opening time for Beaver Creek. This month is great not only for good snow conditions, but also for lower crowds and subsequently lower rates.

It’s got 1,815 skiable acres with a summit elevation of 11,440′. There are also plenty of ski-in/ski-out homes and base camp hotels to choose from. Beaver Creek Ski Resort is equipped with four different village areas with their own lodging, restaurants and shopping districts, giving visitors lots of options for a stellar ski vacation.

Crested Butte

Crested Butte is a little more secluded and best for expert skiers. The main town is nothing fancy, but will have fun activities and great recreation and amenities throughout the year, located three miles from the ski resort. The ski season opens around Thanksgiving Day most years. This small town provides vacationers with good lodging options and a host of eateries.

Best Things to Do in Colorado in November

Below are some of the best places to visit in the month of November. In addition to these places, other Fall activities available this time of year include ATVing, apple picking, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, sight-seeing, spa retreats and ziplining.

November Holiday Towns

Breckenridge is obviously a top-tier ski destination, but (while the skiing is good and the slopes are less crowded in November) there’s such much more to enjoy. There’s no better time to take advantage of the low crowds, so get into the historical sites and museums while you can.

The ski town also offers a Breckenridge Dining Passport at the Welcome Center that will get you discounts at select restaurants, and bars will also offer specials throughout the month. There are also many guided hikes and tours led by experts who will take you through scenic walks or historic areas.

Steamboat has lots to offer guests during the month of November. It’s ski slopes are open and the town is filled with festivities. This is the ultimate time for relaxation in Steamboat Springs, while the crowds are low and the Winter chill is blowing in. Strawberry Hot Springs may still be accessible at this point, but if not the Old Town Hot Springs will be a great place for the entire family.

Thanksgiving is made extremely special and easy with Moving Mountains chefs’ Luxury Catered Chalet package . It makes the entire day a breeze, so you and your family can have the most outstanding holiday experience imaginable. Saddleback Ranch also has a Dining Sleigh Ride (not necessarily available Thanksgiving Day) but it’s a very unique experience for families to enjoy together.

Telluride has a fun Thanksgiving Day (opening ski season) for residents and visitors to enjoy. The ski runs will open first thing in the morning and skiers and snowboarders will line up early to be the first ones on the mountain. After they tire toward mid-afternoon, they’ll come back down the mountain for apres ski at favorite local spots like Tomboy Tavern in Mountain Village . In addition to apres ski, several restaurants are open for Thanksgiving dinner, including Allred’s Restaurant and The View Bar and Grill – both of which have amazing scenic views and a full menu of Thanksgiving dishes.

Visit Glenwood Springs

There’s no better month than November to have a relaxing holiday in Colorado and Glenwood Springs blows other towns out of the water. Glenwood is a very hospitable town that makes a perfect base for your vacation. A stay in Glenwood Springs gives you access not only to it’s own amenities, but also to neighboring Aspen where you can easily drive to experience the ski town or hike Maroon Bells for the day.

Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is home to one of the largest natural hot springs on earth . This is a popular destination with Summer tourists, so November visitors will love the hot springs without the crowd. The springs sit between neighboring Lookout Mountain and Red Mountain, creating a gorgeous view. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is another great place to visit for the cave tours, or to catch live music and drink specials on the weekends.

Thanksgiving Day in Glenwood is a truly special time. The day is essentially the beginning of the Christmas season for the town and there are all-day festivities, including a Holiday Lighting & Wine Walk. The Hotel Colorado has a Christmas lighting ceremony with a fireworks display, there are free alcoholic beverage tastings featuring local wineries and distilleries, and kids can even meet Santa!

Visit Denver

The Mile High City is best known for being the capital of Colorado; a true metropolis that began humbly as a frontier town that boomed in the Gold Rush. If you’re not looking to hike, climb or bike your way through the mountains, Denver is a great place to be in November before the Winter crowd comes in.

In November, there are many free days at the local museums and attractions. First Saturdays are free at Denver Art Museum and Veteran’s Day is free at Denver Botanical Gardens . Check the calendar at both Denver Zoo and the Denver Children’s Museum as one or two random days will be free to visitors in November.

There are many other things to do and experience in Denver, like the historic tours and Old West attractions. In addition to the many attractions all over the city, like Denver Union Station and other historical sites (a lot of these experiences are included in the $30 Mile High Culture Pass – three days of admission and discounts on transportation), you can easily escape to more secluded areas right outside the capitol – like Red Rocks Park or Dinosaur Ridge .

Free Days at National Parks and State Parks

Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day is free at all the National Parks across the state of Colorado . This is a great time to plan a day of sightseeing and hiking at one of these beloved parks before the Winter blows over the mountain ranges, making the journey a little too cold for hiking.

Rocky Mountain National Park is best for hiking and seeing possible elk and bighorn sheep that are coming down the mountain before Winter. If you feel a hiking excursion may be too cold in November, you can experience the full glory of the Rockies from your car while driving on Trail Ridge Road, if it’s still open. For the true western experience, try out one of the Horseback Riding excursions, led by trained horsemen who guide you through the National Park’s lower regions.

Mesa Verde National Park is the perfect destination for hiking enthusiasts and athletes who love a challenge. The National Park is filled with over 600 cliff-dwellings dating back to 600AD and has some of the most well-preserved archeological sites in the country. Not only will you get an educational history lesson of the area, you’ll get a serious workout just trying to get to these sites.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is considered Colorado’s least visited National Park, therefore crowd levels should never be a problem when visiting any time of year. But what makes November such a great month to go is the crisp Fall weather. There are many activities to take part in while visiting, including hiking, fishing, stargazing and even skiing later in the season.

Great Sand Dunes is the ultimate outdoor adventure that thrill-seekers can take part in. This unique stretch of landscape in southern Colorado offers hiking, fat biking, sand sledding, camping and horseback riding, just to name a few. Though it’s open year-round, November is an ideal month to visit the Dunes for some of the lowest crowds. At night, the Dunes come to life with a brilliant starry sky. You can see the Milky Way, the bright Moon and even planets very clearly. You’re also encouraged to take nighttime walks, but use extreme precaution to find your way back. 

Black Friday, or “Fresh Air Friday”

Colorado State Parks host visitors for free the day after Thanksgiving. Traditionally, Black Friday is a high-energy spending spree across the United States. The state parks determined one of the best ways to promote relaxation after our annual day of gratitude was to open these beautiful areas to the public for free.

The state parks have a lot of the same experiences available that the national parks have, but usually on a smaller scale. Some of the most popular activities in the state parks include hunting and fishing, hiking and biking, camping, boating and wildlife viewing.

Scenic Drives on Colorado Highways and Byways

Colorado is home to 26 scenic highways and byways all over the state, so there’s no shortage of drives you can take wherever your vacation takes you. November is considered the last month of the year to get your scenic drive in before the snow makes these roads difficult to pass. Below we’ve listed some of the most popular drives for tourists.

San Juan Skyway is a long nationally known driving loop located near Telluride. There’s a smaller drive on the beautifully scenic road called the “Million Dollar Highway”. Built in the 1880s, the Million Dollar Highway is one of the state’s most spectacular drives as the highway was cut into the side of the mountain range. The complete San Juan Skyway drive is a 235 mile loop that travels through some of the most lovely views in Colorado.

Trail Ridge Road is located near Estes Park, taking you through the gorgeous Rocky Mountain National Park. You can experience the full glory of the Rockies from your car while driving on Trail Ridge Road and get gorgeous pictures with sweeping vistas. Along the way you may find fall-colored alpines forests, herds of elk or bighorn sheep and steep cliffs.

Guanella Pass Scenic Byway is connected to the Front Range town of Georgetown. It’s got breathtaking views of the alpine forests, lush lowlands, steep divides and bubbling creeks. Since the pass grazes over the treeline, drivers can often get a 360 degree view of the Colorado mountains.

Peak to Peak Highway is another drive from Estes Park, near Trail Ridge Road, giving you a serene view of the Continential Divide. Residents suggest going early in the day for less traffic and a fair share of wildlife sightings. It also travels through old ghost towns with old clapboard siding and Victorian-era design.

November’s most notable holiday is Thanksgiving, and many cities in Colorado will be hosting events for the holiday with anticipation for the Christmas season. All Colorado Beer Festival

Though it is a slower month for tourism around the state and country due to folks hunkering down and saving for the holiday season, November is still full of fun things to do. Colorado boasts a plethora of expanding ski slopes to ride, which are less crowded (albeit with less terrain open) than the upcoming peak season.

November is a tricky month in Rocky Mountain National Park. Late fall means colder temperatures and potential snow in the mountains. If you’re planning a visit in November, keep in mind that depending on the current weather will predict whether you need snowshoes or skis or can hit the trails with sneakers. The biggest benefit of visiting Rocky Mountain National Park in November is the low visitor numbers. In fact, they are less than half what they are in October—averaging around 125,000. A visit in November presents an opportunity to hike on trails that in the high season are incredibly crowded.

The biggest drawback of a November visit to Rocky Mountain National Park is road closures. The famous Trail Ridge Road closes beginning at Many Parks Curve in mid-October. Bicycling:  Experience the wonders of Rocky Mountain National park on two wheels! Biking options in Rocky Mountain National Park vary, so you can choose your own adventure. If you don’t have a bike, you can rent one in  Estes Park .  Trail Ridge Road closes to vehicular traffic in mid-October, but it is open to bicycles until November 30th. Old Fall River Road may or may not be open so please check the current conditions. Trail Ridge Road gains over 4,000 feet over elevation over its 48 miles. Old Fall River Road is gravel, so you’ll need a mountain bike. Depending on your time constraints and fitness level, you’ll likely need a “shuttle”—another car to pick you up if you choose to bike either road only one way.

Hiking/Snowshoeing: Depending on the snowpack you may need snowshoes or cross country skis when hitting the trails in November. In the next section we highlight some of our favorite late fall hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Backpacking: If you’re looking for more than a day hike, Rocky Mountain National Park has plenty of spectacular routes for multi-day backpacking trips. The weather in November is ideal for backpacking but it is essential to pack warm layers for the chilly nights in higher elevations.  Backpacking permits  are required and can be purchased at the Wilderness Offices located at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center or the Kawuneeche Visitor Center.

Take a Guided Tour:  If you’re short on time for planning, let a guided tour show you the sights. Wildland Trekking has options for  guided backpacking tours  and  guided day hikes  through Rocky Mountain National Park.

Fishing:  Trout fishing in the lakes and streams of Rocky Mountain National Park is the best in the fall months. Keep in mind that there are possession limits, catch and release regulations in some areas, and you need a Colorado fishing license for anyone 16 years of age and older. EXPLORE ROCKY MOUNTAINS WITH AWARD WINNING GUIDES

Hiking in November in Rocky Mountain National Park can present winter conditions on trail. The west side of the Park receives significantly more snow, so if you’re venturing out on a hike in the Grand Lake area, you’ll need to be mindful of conditions. Below are two of our favorite hikes in November—the first is near Grand Lake and the second is near Bear Lake, on the eastern side of the Park:

1. Cascade Falls 

• Mileage:  6.8 miles round trip
• Elevation Gain:  430 feet
• Trailhead:  North Inlet

This is one of the most scenic hikes in the Kawuneeche Valley. Keep in mind this hike is near Grand Lake, on the west side of the Park so in November there is likely to be snow. In the fall, there is plenty of brook trout in the North Inlet Creek, so you can bring along your fishing rod. This hike runs along the North Inlet trail, which is part of the larger Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. Though this hike is almost seven miles, it has an easy elevation profile. It takes you through an open meadow of aspens, lodgepole pines, and the occasional marmot.  An evergreen forest grows ever thicker up to the three mile mark. Take the junction to the right to reach the 40 foot Cascade Falls which can be viewed from above or below. Be careful with the rock scramble up to the top if you choose to do so especially if there is snow and ice. A large meadow is just beyond the falls, a good place for a picnic lunch, but beware of wildlife as moose and elk are often spotted here.

2. Sky Pond

• Mileage:  9.0 miles round trip
• Elevation Gain:  1780 feet
• Trailhead:  Glacier Gorge

Begin your hike at the Glacier Gorge trailhead in the Bear Lake area. In November, there may or may not be snow on this hike so check the current conditions before you hit the trail. Your first destination is the 30 foot plunging Alberta Falls, located within the first mile of this hike. Within the next mile you’ll reach two trail junctions, North Longs Peak Trail (turn right) and Mills Junction (continue straight). Next you’ll climb up switchbacks through a beautiful gorge till you reach the subalpine lake Loch Vale at 2.8 miles. At the foot of the lake you’ll have spectacular views of Taylor Peak. After leaving Loch Vale, you’ll climb again for another 0.8 miles and take the trail junction to the left to continue on to Sky Pond. Climb the next half mile to reach to base of Timberline Falls. The next section of the trail runs along Timberline Falls where you’ll have to rock scramble up 100 feet. Be careful if there is snow and ice. If you so choose, Glass Lake will be your reward. A rocky trail around the west side of the lake takes you 0.4 miles to Sky Pond at 10,900 feet with sheer cliffs of granite towering above you. It will be worth the effort to see this magnificent sight.

The temperatures in November can be quite cold and snow begins to fall in Rocky Mountain National Park. Keep in mind that the west side of the Park at Grand Lake has more precipitation, thus more snow in these colder months. At Grand Lake in November, there is a high of 41ºF (5ºC) and 9ºF (-12ºC) and an average snowfall of 9.4 inches. In Estes Park in November, you can expect a high of 44ºF (6ºC) and low of 25ºF (-3ºC) and an average of 3.7 inches of snow.

Hiking and Snowshoeing in November

Breckenridge’s hundreds of miles of trails are always open and are perfect for winter hiking . This time of year, you’ll want to check the muddy meter to see which trails are ready to explore and which ones you’ll want to avoid. Trails with higher elevations will typically have more snow accumulation, while those closer to town my get muddy due to sunshine and melting snow. Get trail recommendations by stopping by the Breckenridge Welcome Center for updated trail conditions. If you’re looking to snowshoe, rentals are available around town and at both Nordic Centers .

Best times to visit Colorado

There's no bad time to visit Colorado, but some times are better than others. The best time to visit for you will depend largely on what you want to do when you get there. Snow may be hard to come by at most elevations in August, and you're not likely to have great hiking and mountain biking weather in most parts of the state in January. But -- it also all depends.

At about 380 miles long and 280 miles wide, Colorado has multiple climates, so it's entirely possible to be in the middle of snowy conditions on the mountain, while folks are walking around Denver in shorts and a T-shirt. So unlike somewhere with a defined climate across the whole area, like say the Maldives , the best time to visit Colorado is a bit more nuanced based on where you are heading and what your priorities are while you're there.

When to find the best weather in Colorado

Most of the time, the "best weather" means going when it is most likely to be sunny and temperate. But in Colorado, where people go to chase powder, you're going to need to define "best weather" a bit more closely.

Best times to visit for skiing

If you're hoping for a great day skiing or boarding on the mountain, then your best months for snow will be the winter months. While there are some outliers in Colorado with longer ski seasons that run October to May (or longer), most ski mountain resorts are open from late-November to early-April, based on snow conditions. However, early and late season conditions can be very unpredictable in terms of snow totals and quality.

The average snowiest months in most parts of Colorado are February and March, while January is typically the coldest month based on historic averages. All things being equal, I'm a big fan of late-February Colorado skiing. By then, the snow totals should be good and temperatures are typically still safely below freezing, while usually being beyond the deepest bitter cold of winter.

Best times to visit for hiking and white water rafting

If you're after air that is warm by day, but crisp and cool by night, your best weather months in Colorado are mid-June through September, though know that early June and even late-September can still be potentially dicey in some higher elevations. But if you want to enjoy hiking and exploring Colorado and places like Rocky Mountain National Park on foot, summer is your best bet for optimal weather.

Those looking for Colorado white water rafting will also be best served in the summer, with the caveat that the most adrenaline-packed water usually comes in late spring and early summer as the snowmelt fills the rivers, while a more tranquil float is more often found later in the summer.

The transitional months of April, May and late-October can hold the most unpredictable weather in Colorado of the 12 months, so these are months you may want to avoid if you don't want the weather conditions to be a last-minute surprise.

When to travel to Colorado to avoid the crowds

Remember those transitional, or shoulder season, months I just mentioned as being a touch less desirable in terms of unpredictable weather? Well, forget that part if you're looking to avoid the crowds. Typically speaking, April and May and then October through mid-December will be your least crowded months in Colorado, as visitors often aim for the warmth and accessibility of summer or the powdery snow of winter.

But, you can get really lucky with phenomenal early or late season snow, if that's what you are secretly hoping for. In 2019, Steamboat Springs enjoyed 44 inches of snow on the middle of the mountain in October 2019, prompting the ski resort to start operations up earlier than originally planned.

On the flip side, a later arrival of fall can mean that the leaves are actually at their peak at some point in early to mi-October, saving the aspen's golden show for the lucky few traveling during a traditional shoulder season.

Cheapest dates to visit Colorado

The least expensive times for hotels in Colorado depends on where you're traveling.

For example, December is the cheapest hotel month on average in Denver, according to Kayak . This is likely due to a drop-off in business travel in December.

However, if you were to look at a ski town such as Vail, Aspen, Breckenridge, Steamboat, etc., then December prices are some of the highest of the year -- especially during the second half of the month.

Again according to Kayak data , in Vail, the cheapest month for a hotel night is May, with an average of price of $142 per night, while the average cost of a night in December is $668 (making ski season precisely when you want to redeem those hotel points).

If you want to stay slopeside at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek , it will cost you 30,000 World of Hyatt points per night for a standard room, even when that room is selling for $1,000 per night during peak season. (Here's how to earn some Hyatt points of your very own.)

Out in Estes Park , which is adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park , the least expensive month for hotels is April, while the most expensive months are July and August.

The cheapest months to fly to Colorado, according to Kayak , are September, October and May.

The priciest months to fly to Colorado are in December, especially around the holidays, and March -- because of spring break travel. However, since Denver (DEN) has such a large presence of low-cost air carriers, you have more low-fare options available there than in many other destinations, regardless of when you decide to travel.

The average cost of a domestic round-trip ticket to Denver is about $50 below that national average across airports. (However, the smaller airports such as Aspen-Pitkin, Vail-Eagle, etc. are often much pricier if using cash.)

Seasonal events in Colorado

Summer events.

Summer is festival season across Colorado, which can temporarily dramatically impact rates and availability when something as major as the Telluride Film Festival is in town .

A sampling of other popular summer festivals and events in Colorado include Telluride Bluegrass Festival , Colorado Brewers Festival in Fort Collins, Blues and BBQ in Denver, Food & Wine Classic in Aspen and the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo in Steamboat Springs.

The "Wildflower Capital of the World," Crested Butte, holds its annual wildflower festival in July . You're also sure to find a variety of farmers markets, fairs and rodeos across the state during the warm weather months.

Fall events

Fall brings with it not only the changing of the leaves in must-see spots like Maroon Bells near Aspen but also several autumnal-themed events, like Oktoberfest. There are a few Oktoberfest-type festivals around the state, but a popular one is Vail Oktoberfest , which is extra special as Vail itself has a very European look and feel.

In Denver, in the fall you'll also find the Great American Beer Festival.

A unique fall event in Colorado happens each September and October as the elk in the Estes Park area bugle and put on a show for each other (and we just get to watch). To go along with the natural annual "rut," there is also Elk Fest that takes place in Bond Park. Here you'll find everything from elk-inspired arts and crafts, to craft beer, bugling contests and Native American music, dancing and storytelling.

Winter events

Winter is the time for all things snow and ice in Colorado. In addition to getting lots of use out of annual ski passes such as Ikon, Epic and Mountain Collective across the state at ski resorts large and small, there are other winter happenings in Colorful Colorado.

If you want to take in the best of the best at X-Games, head to the Aspen area each winter. This year, the competitive winter sports event is slated for late-January. (Snag a room on points at the new W Aspen , if you can.) The last several winters, there's been an ice castle constructed in Dillon, Colorado , that is worth a visit.

Spring events

Spring brings with it the end-of-season events at the various ski mountains, which can be pretty entertaining if you like to see folks in fun costumes ski jump from the melting snow into the water!

But once the snow melts and the lifts stop running, the early season festivals begin to crop up. In Beaver Creek, you'll usually find the Blues, Brews & BBQ festival happening in May.

If mountain biking is more your speed, in May you can find the Fruita Fat Tire Festival out in western Colorado, which is home to some of the best mountain bike terrain in the state.

Bottom line

I hate to play favorites, but Colorado has to be one of the best destinations in the United States for those who love the great outdoors. From the wildflowers of summer to the powdery back bowls of winter, each season holds special adventures and events across the western state. The best time to visit Colorado will all depend on which adventure you want to embark on next.

Epic Road Trip to Colorado in November

Have you been road-tripping to Colorado in November?

All this time we went in the summer, and who doesn’t fall in love with Colorado outdoors in the summer, right?

One time, we decided to go to Colorado in November during Thanksgiving Break. We have a family friend who lives in Lone Tree – about 24 miles to the south of Denver – who always opens their house for us.

Colorado weather in November

Just like when we went to P ittsburgh, Pennsylvania for Christmas holidays , we also monitored the weather in Denver, Colorado prior to our road trip.

Even though my husband was born and grew up in Pennsylvania, and stayed for several years in Wyoming, this trip to Colorado in November was his first.

We have lived in Texas for more than 20 years, so trips with possible ice or snow on the road always concern him.

In most years, the average high temperature for November in the Denver area is between 47 and 58 degrees Fahrenheit (8 to 14 degrees Celsius). The average low falls between 22 and 28 F (-6 to -2 C.)

The days at Denver cool most rapidly during November, and the temperature drops to below freezing on most nights. Typically the city has an inch (2.5 cm) of snow on the ground for 6 days in this month.

You need to wear the right winter outfit , especially if you are from Texas like us.

But it was different when we visited Colorado in November 2019.

Road Trip to Colorado in November

About a week before we left for Colorado, they started to get snow but it melted a couple of days later.

Averaged high temperature played in the mid-50s, and the low was around 32 (Fahrenheit.)

My son and I were hoping for snow when we were there, but not my husband.

For this road trip to Colorado in November, we didn’t try to cover a lot of places in one day like we normally did. We just went to one place or did one thing in one day. I think November mood played an important role in it.

Also, we spent a night in Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle before we crossed New Mexico to Colorado.

As most of you know, we travel with our dog Snoopy and he hasn’t been to Amarillo yet. We drove through Amarillo in the summer on our way to Albuquerque, but we didn’t make any stops at the 3 must-see attractions in Amarillo at that time.

Then the next morning we hiked the Lighthouse Trail in Palo Duro Canyon State Park . A different experience of hiking the most famous trail in the park compared to summer or spring times.

Day 1 – Sunday – Pueblo, Colorado

On this trip, we also met our friend who moved to Colorado City from Weatherford, Texas.

Originally we would stop at their place but because of the muddy road condition from the melted snow a few days ago, we decided to have supper somewhere in Pueblo. They didn’t think our minivan would survive the drive to their place. Besides, there are no street lights on the way to their property.

It was the right decision, too, since it got dark early in the mountain. That day the road was slippery, and we already saw 3 cars wrecked on the side of the highway.

Pueblo is famous for its Riverwalk, and there’s a Nature and Raptor Center that provides pleasant hiking along the river and houses rescued wild birds such as owls and eagles.

The city is also famous for its Mexican food. Pueblo farmers grow their variety of green chile, made into a savory stew and all kinds of food.

If you get to visit the city in the fall, make sure you are there during the Chile & Frijoles Festival, the celebration of the harvest, and the city’s Hispanic heritage.

We have spent a night in Pueblo before. It is located about 2 hours drive to the south of Denver.

Day 2 – Monday – Pueblo to Lone Tree

Driving distance from Pueblo to Lone Tree is about 1.5 hours, but first, we turned west to Canon City .

We went to Canon City in the summertime and beginning of fall, so we wanted to know how the city was at this time of year.

Less than an hour’s drive later, we arrived in the city.

Canon City looked so quiet, there weren’t too many people on the street. There were no cars and lines in the Royal Gorge Train Station, the Museum of Colorado Prisons didn’t open on Monday, and the Royal Gorge Regional Museum and History Center was also closed.

The ones that opened were fast-food restaurants and a few cafes. But everything looked pretty much the same as the last time we went there seven years ago.

We parked around downtown and walked around.

There were colorful dinosaur statues on the street sidewalks which made cute pictures.

When we walked to the Canon City Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, a couple of people there told us that not much to do in Canon City during Thanksgiving Break. The train only works for certain days during the holiday season.

They told us to do the Skyline Drive which we have done at least four times in the past.

Skyline Drive is one of the best things to do when you are visiting Canon City. One of Colorado’s most beautiful scenic drives, it spans 2.6 miles throughout Canon City and the Fremont County region. The drive was constructed following the route of a high razorback ridge, accessible via US Highway 50. It is not for the faint of heart.

After they told us that a snow storm was coming towards our destination, we left through Phantom Canyon Road, the Gold Belt Tour that connects the city of Florence near Canon City in the south to Victor in the north. We have drove through this road a few times as well, but it was our first time to drive there when we visited Colorado in November.

Phantom Canyon Road is one of the most scenic and historic drives in Colorado. You will drive on a gravel road where you will see steel bridges and tunnels along the road. In some areas the road is narrow, where you have to slow down and sometimes share the road with others who come from the opposite direction.

This 30-mile route increases in elevation from 5,500 feet to 9,500 feet. It follows the route of the Florence & Cripple Creek Railroad built in 1894 as a connection from Florence to the goldfields of Cripple Creek and Victor.

Do this scenic and historic drive when you are visiting south-central Colorado. Again, it is not for the faint of heart, just like The Skyline Road in Canon City. And if you are not sure about driving on this road with snow on the ground, don’t do it!

In the beginning of the road, we saw spotted leftover snow on the sides of the road. We stopped so Snoopy could get his first experience on the snow. He didn’t seem too happy though. Maybe because the weather was also cold.

After the first tunnel, the gravel road was clean from snow, but it’s different after the second tunnel.

Snow was on the road, and steep drop-offs started to appear on the left side of the road. Towards the steel bridge, snow disappeared again from the gravel road. After the bridge, the road got narrow with some sections that were only one car wide.

Then suddenly the road was covered with snow and it got thicker towards Victor. We couldn’t see the side of the road, so I asked my husband to drive in the middle. Sitting in the passenger seat made me a little nervous. It felt a relief once we arrived in Victor.

Victor – the City of Gold Mines – is located at nearly 10,000 elevation feet on the southwest side of Pikes Peak, in the Cripple Creek Victor Mining District. It is designated a National Historic District where remnants of old gold mines can be found all over town.

The city’s setting is like the 1890’s mine structures with turn-of-the-century buildings that house businesses like unique shops and restaurants, hotels, and offices.

Victor is a small city where you can find museums and hiking trails as well.

One time we arrived here in the late afternoon, so we spent a night at Victor Hotel. An old, small four-story hotel where they said the elevator is haunted. It worked well the day we arrived, but it just moved up and down the next day. The door never opened and there’s nothing wrong with the elevator.

So, we took our son there to show him inside the hotel. He wasn’t born when we stayed there.

Snow was on the ground, and the road was a bit slippery when we were in Victor. If you like the history and the charm of old mine towns, you must visit Victor. You can come for a day or half-day visit, or spend a night like we did.

The next bigger town is Cripple Creek , another gold-mine town that turned into a gaming town.

The main street is full of casinos and it’s also the starting point of Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad. A scenic 45-minute train ride that only opens from mid-May to Labor Day. It’s a beautiful ride on a steam engine that you must do when visiting in the summer.

While driving through Cripple Creek, we thought about doing the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine Tours, but they were closed. They are only open from early April to late October.

We did the tour in the summer before our son was born, so I guess we have to plan another visit to Cripple Creek.

Snow started to fall as we continued the drive to Lone Tree. We drove through Colorado Springs, but we didn’t make any stops since we wanted to get there before the snowstorm arrived. We’re not sure how bad it’s going to be, so playing safe was our best choice.

Before we got to our friends’ place, we stopped at a supermarket. People were stocked up on basic kitchen needs, but they didn’t look panic like North Texan when the weather guy said there would be an inch of snow on the ground – for next week. Haha..

Day 3 – Tuesday – Lone Tree

We woke up to more than a foot of snow in the morning. I saw that my friend’s husband was shoveling snow on the driveway.

Poor Snoopy didn’t know what to do with his morning routine. Snow was up to his belly, he couldn’t find grass, and he finally did it while standing up with his butt on the snow.

When my son woke up, I told him to look through the window. He couldn’t believe his eyes. Everything was white! He put on his jacket and went outside playing in the snow.

Snow was up to his thighs, it made him hard to move. He just threw his body to the back and laughed. It’s our first time to see snow that high. The highest we got in North Texas was 6 inches and it was years ago.

We spent the whole morning talking while listening to the news. Businesses were closed, and people were staying home. It’s the first snowstorm that dumped heavy snow on Colorado in November since 1994. Hundreds of flights were canceled out of Denver International Airport. The Weather Channel named this system Winter Storm Dorothy.

In the afternoon, we went out to buy supper. The city hasn’t plowed the road in the neighborhood, but they did the main roads. Everywhere we went was white and it was really cold, too. We didn’t stay outside long and wondered whether we could go somewhere the whole time we were there.

Day 4 – Wednesday – Lone Tree to Estes Park

Our plan for today was visiting Estes Park , and from the news we saw that they have plowed the road to the city. Outside, the city of Lone Tree has plowed the road, too. So, we’re good to go.

There weren’t too many cars on the road. I guess people chose to stay inside, preparing food for the Thanksgiving Feast the next day.

We drove through Boulder who got more snow than the Denver area. Slushy roads on main street were really ugly, and there was lots of traffic. It felt good when we finally left the city.

From Lyons to Estes Park the view was breathtaking! Inches of fresh snow blanketed the ground to the top of the mountains. Pine trees looked pretty with 3-4 inches of snow on their needles. The road was clean from snow, and we saw something new for us. Cars covered with snow on the side of the road. I wonder when they would get to tow the cars.

When we almost reached Estes Park, the road was not as smooth as in the beginning. Ice started to build, so my husband had to drive extra carefully.

We stopped at Colorado Cherry Company for a pit stop, where people were lined up to pick up their pie orders. The pies looked delicious, but I saved them for our next trip to Estes Park. It wasn’t our first and last trip to Estes Park anyway.

Lake Estes’ surfaces  looked frozen and it gave a beautiful view. We drove straight to Stanley Hotel , the hotel that inspired Stephen King to write The Shining. The hotel ground covered with inches of snow, made it look even beautiful. We didn’t have to pay to get into the hotel ground like when we visited a year before during summer holiday.

With more than a foot of snow on the ground, what’s better than our son reenacted Danny Torrance ran away from his father on the hotel hedge maze? It was really perfect, even me playing Wendy Torrance where my husband and Snoopy tried to help us (new characters!)

We enjoyed our time there, and we forgot to see the decorations inside the hotel during Thanksgiving! Haha.

Next stop was Rocky Mountain National Park . We drove through downtown Estes Park and we didn’t see too many people around. Some of the stores were decorated with Thanksgiving themed, some were Christmas themed. We didn’t make any stop at all because I didn’t feel like shopping and we didn’t want to drive home in the dark.

We entered RMNP through Beaver Meadows Entrance. Snow was thick on both sides of the road, and it also covered the road surfaces.

At the entrance station, there’s a sign saying All Wheel Drive and 4WD recommended. We saw that the road to Trail Ridge Road was closed, so we turned left to Bear Lake Rd. I asked my husband if our car is Wheel Drive and he said no. But why didn’t the Ranger tell us to turn around? I wonder.

We didn’t have a planned itinerary for the RMNP. We (or me?) just wanted to see the park in the winter. Ok. It’s not officially winter yet, but the snowstorm from a couple of days before has turned the park into a winter wonderland. Elks were trying to find food from the white ground. It’s so pretty and calm.

Anyway, we turned around at Moraine Park Discovery Center. We’re not sure what the road condition to Bear Lake would be. Thicker snow? Ice? And the fact that there was no cell connection made us decide to leave the park.

But we turned to Moraine Park Campground first. We wanted to see how the campground looked like in the winter.

The snow on the road was even thicker here. We were afraid to make a U-turn as we couldn’t see the roadsides, so we just followed the arrows.

A family with young children was having fun sledding on the snow at one campsite. Probably locals, so they knew which location was safe for sledding.

Day 5 – Thursday – Lone Tree to Breckenridge

Happy Thanksgiving! As planned, we had brunch at a local restaurant for the day of Thanksgiving. Snow was still on the ground, but the road condition was better.

In the afternoon we drove to Brec kenridge . Everywhere was covered with the white powder. A beautiful drive, I would say.

We took CO-470 W from Lone Tree and turned to I-70 W before we continued on CO-9 S to Breckenridge. We passed Idaho Springs, the gateway to Mt. Evans; Georgetown, where you can ride the Georgetown Loop enjoying the beauty of the area from a steam engine; and a small town Frisco that reminded me of a city in North Texas that has the same name.

Less than 2 hours later we arrived in Breckenridge.

As we arrived late in the city, there was not much we could do. It’s close to 4.30, so we went straight to see the troll.

The troll, named Isak Heartstone, is a 15-foot wooden sculpture created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo. He is located on the Trollstigen Trail in the southeast corner of the Stephen C. West Ice Arena parking lot, next to Illinois Gulch Trailhead.

After we parked in town, we took the Breck Free Ride which is also a pet-friendly bus. Then we followed the troll’s footsteps to the trailhead.

Back in town, it’s already dark. We grabbed crepes from the famous Crepes a la Cart before we left for Lone Tree. The line was long, and we got to talk with a family who was also from Texas. We agreed that it got dark earlier in the mountains than back home in Texas. And it’s darker, too!

Day 6 – Friday – Lone Tree to Colorado Springs

Black Friday shopping has been out of the picture for our family since years ago. So, we went to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, hoping to see it empty. We were wrong! People in Colorado Springs didn’t like shopping either. Haha.

Although it’s not as busy as in the summer, finding a parking space was not easy. We were lucky when finally someone left at the Main Parking Area.

Like anywhere else, the city already plowed the sidewalks around the Central Garden Area. But when we walked past the sidewalks, snow was still thick and patches of ice were built here and there.

When you visit during snow, you must be careful. We didn’t stop at the Balance Rock area because parking was full. Also, we didn’t make a stop at the Visitor Center as we’ve been there several times.

Like most places of interest in Colorado, Garden of the Gods is also a pet-friendly destination. You must keep your dogs on leashes all the time though.

And don’t forget to carry your dog’s waste bag even though there are waste stations in the park. You never know when they’re out of it.

Snoopy wasn’t the only dog in the park that day. He made lots of new friends.

Day 7 – Saturday – Lone Tree to Texas

It’s time to go home. It took about 12 hours to drive to our home in Texas, but after visiting Colorado several times, we no longer spent a night on the way home. The key is to leave as early as we can because we lost an hour going home. Goodbye, snow! See you next time!

Our take on visiting Colorado during Thanksgiving Break

Besides the short daylight, we enjoyed our visit during Thanksgiving Break in Colorado. My son and I were hoping for the snow, and that year Mother Nature decided to drop the snow more than normal. My husband enjoyed some of them, especially when we visited the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park. The Shining is one of our favorite movies. So, it was a perfect setup when we were there. 

Winter views are amazing! Everywhere we turned our heads, it was covered by snow. It’s a winter wonderland for us Texans. In North Texas, sometimes we wore shorts in the winter.

Here are some things that you need to consider when you plan a visit to Colorado in November:

– it’s better if your car is a 4 wheeler or an all wheel drive.

– make sure it’s ready for a wint er road trip .

– you don’t always see snow in or around Denver at this time of year, but mountains are most likely covered with snow. 

– winter season in ski towns begins in November.

– don’t put too many stops in for a day.

– it gets dark faster in the mountains.

– find information about the area you want to visit at this time of year.

– make sure you check the driving direction and time for every place you want to visit.

– putting a pair of boots on your dog’s paws is recommended as well as the sweaters (unless your dogs are huskies or other cold weather breeds.)

– drive carefully.

You had a great road trip. Colorado is unique at any time of the year. I have been there in April and May, but I plan my next trip in late fall. I know that not all trails and roads are passable then, but I like winter scenery. I had no time to see Pueblo, so I added it to my winter trip. I also haven’t seen Victor – the City of Gold Mines, so I hope to visit it during my next trip.

I want to visit in early September for the fall foliage, but I have to wait for a few more years. You will like Victor.

Logan and I did almost this exact road trip! We stayed in Estes Park and visited Rocky Mountain National Park in September and it was chilly! It snowed so bad they had to close off the overpass – causing us to reroute around the entire park to get back up to Estes 😂 a story we’ll never forget.

We’ve never been on a road trip during the winter since we are both terrified of driving in the ice and snow. We can drive through harsh rain, but snow is on another level. Looks like there was still plenty to see and do despite snow in some parts of the region. You definitely have to be comfortable with shifting plans since weather can change overnight. Skyline Drive sounds fantastic and a drive we would definitely enjoy.

Yeah. As someone who came from a tropical country, I don’t feel comfortable also driving on snow or ice condition. I hope one day you can do the Skyline Drive.

Well, turned out there are still lots of things to do in the winter in Colorado; besides winter sports.

I went to college in Fort Collins, so spent a lot of time in Estes Park and Breckenridge- my two favorite spots in Colorado. I love the descriptions of Snoopy’s experience in the snow. I wouldn’t want to have to walk barefoot and do my business in it either. LOL.

We supposed to go back to Breckenridge last summer, but we had to cut short our road trip. Too much stress driving up and down the dirt road in the southwestern Colorado. Haha… Hopefully next summer we can go back. Not sure we will go back this Thanksgiving or Winter breaks, but if we go, we will buy snoopy a couple of boots.

We were here this time last year! We were even there a little earlier, mid Oct-early November and had no idea it would be cold and snowy. Way to make the best of it and get off the beaten track. Cripple Creek is such a crazy throw-back town, we spent my birthday there.

I absolutely loved Rocky Mountain National Park and Breckenridge. Just like you it was a road trip but in december and it was absolutely amazing. I absolutely love Colorado! I went in May-June time frame a couple years ago and it wasn’t cold. It was absolutely beautiful, from the mountains, to the rocks, to the city! I’ll have to check out Lone Tree once I’m back in that area!

You were lucky. One time we went in May and there was snow in Rocky Mountain. Also early June, there was snow on the way to Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs. We couldn’t go to the top.

I must admit we often avoid areas like Colorado once the temperatures start to drop. But we may need to re-think that. It is nice to see that many of the spots you stopped in were less busy. I love the idea of travelling along the scenic drives in Colorado. Although I might want to do this before the snow is too heavy. But how fun that your son got to enjoy a real snowfall! And the Rocky Mountain Park looked quite magical with snow on the trees.

I think it would be fine when you drive a 4 wheelers or all wheelers vehicle. Unless they closed the road.

Wow! Colorado in Winter sounds like a good idea. Its interesting to revisit some places like these in every season to see how it looks like throughout the year. I always like going in off-season. Canon City seems to be empty this time of the year. Day 3 looks interesting. Star Gazing on the Shores of Vallecito and Lemon Reservoirs

In November, as the skies clear up, luminous stars appear in the night sky. The shores of Vallecito Reservoir and Lemon Reservoirs are the best places to snuggle up with your significant other for a romantic starry night. Or go as a family with kids and witness the unrivaled views of the Milky Way and various constellations.

The view of the beautiful lake, big open sky, and the blurry San Juan National Forest and Weminiche Wilderness in the background accentuate the complete stargazing experience.

Keep in mind that the full moon for this November will occur on Tuesday, November 8th. The new moon will happen later in November on Wednesday, November 23rd.

The new moon is the best time to go stargazing as it will provide the darkest night skies.

Snowshoeing and Cross Country Skiing at Molas Pass (Snow Dependent)

Molas Pass is a famous destination for snowshoeing and cross country skiing.

As the snow falls over the area, Molas Pass will start to have groomed trails provided by the local Ice Pirates outfitters and individuals cutting trails.

The Molas Pass area is a mix of beautiful open meadows with grand views of the nearby Needle Mountains and Grenadier Range and thick, dense pine and aspen forests.

Trails around the area are plentiful and offer a variety of lengths and difficulties. Whether you're out for a short stroll on snowshoes to get your heart pumping or out for a few hours to earn your post-skiing beer, there's a lot to explore in the Molas Pass area.

Keep in mind that November tends to have unpredictable snowfalls. It's hard to predict how much snow will be on the ground.

Hike in Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park draws millions of people every year to explore its 147 lakes and 355 miles of trails, which appeal to hikers and backpackers of all experience levels. Visitors recommend the park's flat lake trails – such as Lily Lake Loop, Bear Lake trail and the Lake Irene trail – for beginners. Intermediate climbers may enjoy the 4.1-mile Emerald Lake trail, which requires 744 feet of elevation gain. Many experienced hikers set out to complete Longs Peak: This mountain is a 14er (a peak that exceeds 14,000 feet) with a nearly 5,000-foot elevation gain, reserved for ambitious and very skilled hikers willing to start the hike early (think: 3 a.m.) and pack all the appropriate gear.

Don't miss the chance to drive the Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. With a high point at more than 12,000 feet, Trail Ridge spans nearly 50 miles and runs from Estes Park in the east to Grand Lake in the west, and it's known as the highest continuous paved road in the country. It has several designated pull-over areas and is well maintained, according to visitors, but that doesn't mean it's not frightening: The twisting turns and dramatic drops may make your stomach churn. The road is only open from May to October because of its dangerous winter weather conditions.

Rocky Mountain National Park operates on a timed entry reservation system during the summer (May to October), and entry to the park during every season requires a vehicle entrance pass. Keep in mind that backpacking requires a wilderness permit. If you're planning to visit multiple national parks in a year, consider purchasing the America the Beautiful Interagency Annual Pass .

If you're visiting with children, the Denver Zoo is a great place to spend the day, as is the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. The many unique tour offerings , including brewery outings and graffiti tours, can help you experience as much of Denver as possible. For a low-budget activity, plan a picnic in City Park, which offers views of the surrounding mountains and lots of space for the kids to run around.

When night comes, stroll through Larimer Square to find breweries and bars. Some top-rated breweries include Great Divide Brewing Company and Ratio Beerworks. The Five Points area is also an excellent place to explore in the evening thanks to its vibrant nightlife scene, live musical performances and noteworthy street art. Colorado's capital city offers plenty of lodging options as well, from upscale hotels like the Four Seasons Hotel Denver to boutique hotels like Hotel Teatro to more budget-friendly alternatives .

In November, attend Denver Arts Week, where artists, filmmakers, performers and more flock to Denver to showcase their creative projects. Entire neighborhoods, such as the RiNo Art District, are transformed into alfresco art museums during this week as artists paint colorful murals on storefronts and walls. One of Denver Arts Week's most noteworthy events is the Denver Film Festival, which showcases critically acclaimed films and features a star-studded red carpet event.

Insider tip: In terms of food and drink, you can't go wrong with Barcelona Wine Bar, which boasts a plethora of delicious tapas and a variety of wines. (Just make sure you book a reservation for this popular restaurant.) If you're a fan of speakeasies, try Williams & Graham – where you enter the bar through a bookcase – or Retrograde, where you enter the space-themed bar through a freezer in the Frozen Matter ice cream shop.

Surf or sled at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

While you won't find any traditional surfing experiences in landlocked Colorado, that doesn't mean you can't try your hand at the sport. Armed with a sandboard or sand sled (made specifically for sand, as snowboards, snow sleds and skis won't work unless the sand is very wet) as well as a bit of courage, visitors can surf or sled down the massive dunes at Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.

Keep in mind that there are no equipment rental facilities within the park; instead, you'll have to rent a board or sled from a shop in the nearby San Luis Valley. Oasis Store, located 4 miles from the entrance, is the closest rental store option. The first dunes are located about half a mile from the main parking area, but surfing and sledding are allowed anywhere on the dunefield away from vegetated areas. There are plenty of other activities you can enjoy throughout Great Sand Dunes, including hiking and swimming in Medano Creek. The park is also a top Colorado camping location .

Insider tip: Make sure to bring appropriate footwear as the sand can get very hot.

Stay at the famed Stanley Hotel

An inspiration for Stephen King's "The Shining," The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park – about 5 miles from Rocky Mountain National Park – embraces its position as one of the most haunted hotels in America . The historic hotel offers several visitor-recommended tours, including The Shining Tour, where you can peek at one of the axes used in the movie.

Despite these sinister ties, the Stanley Hotel is one of the best hotels in Estes Park for good reason: It touts renovated premium suites, spa treatments, guided outdoor excursions and a plethora of premier dining options. There's plenty to do in the greater town of Estes Park, too, like horseback riding , attending the fall Elk Fest and exploring the free Estes Park Museum.

Garden of the Gods

There are several ways to explore the towering red rock formations in Garden of the Gods , located 5 miles northwest of downtown Colorado Springs , one of which is hiking. Some highly recommended hiking routes include the easy Central Garden Trail and the moderate Palmer Trail.

Jeep tours are another way to explore Garden of the Gods. Visitors can take a 90-minute narrated Jeep tour to Balanced Rock and hear about the history of the park; embark on a 90-minute outing to Glen Eyrie's Queens Canyon and enjoy a scenic overlook; or ride to waterfalls, tunnels and other picturesque areas on a two-hour excursion. Or, step back in time with a trolley tour, offered hourly.

Insider tip: After a day of exploring Garden of the Gods, grab a bite to eat at Pizzeria Rustica in the Old Colorado City area of Colorado Springs. The quattro formaggi (four cheese) pizza is to die for, and the gelato is a delicious way to cool down after hiking.

Summit Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak, a 14er located approximately 30 miles west of Colorado Springs, has inspired many stories and songs, including "America the Beautiful." You can ascend the mountain in a number of ways. Driving is the easiest way to summit, and there are plenty of places to pull over and admire the views on the way up. Keep in mind that the drive requires reservations and can be difficult, especially for those afraid of heights (which is why guided shuttle tours are also available).

Another popular way to reach the top is via The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The railway offers breathtaking vistas as it sweeps passengers up the mountain. At the top, passengers can soak in the scenery before boarding the train down. The entire trip lasts about three hours. You can purchase tickets online before you go; keep in mind that tickets sell out about two weeks in advance in the summer.

The last way up the mountain is on foot. Only skilled hikers and bikers should attempt to scale Pikes Peak via the Barr Trail, which is about a 25-mile round trip. Summiting via the Crags Campground route is shorter, at 14.5 miles, but still difficult. Either way, the grueling hike will be worth it once you make it to the top and witness incredible panoramas of Colorado Springs and the surrounding area. Plus, you can reward yourself with a Pikes Peak doughnut or other treat at the Summit Visitor Center, which sits at 14,115 feet in elevation.

Insider tip: Afternoon storms in the summer are a common occurrence in Colorado, so if you're hiking, make sure you're descending around noon to avoid dangerous lightning.

Many visitors appreciate the charming, small-town vibe of Boulder, located 25 miles northwest of Denver. Pearl Street Mall is a top Boulder attraction , as the alfresco shopping area is lined with a plethora of boutiques and cafes. You'll probably see your fair share of street performers as well. Plus, with the University of Colorado Boulder in close proximity, there are many trendy restaurants and nightlife options.

Past visitors recommend The Buff for breakfast, The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse for lunch or afternoon tea, and The Sink for dinner – and don't forget to grab a drink at one of the city's many breweries in between meals. If you're visiting in the summer, check out the Boulder Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays for farm-fresh produce, live music and more. If you do find yourself in the Boulder area, hiking the Flatirons is a must. These giant sandstone peaks are intertwined with miles of hiking trails, and there are routes for hikers and climbers of all skill levels. Most hikes begin at the popular Chautauqua Trailhead, which also offers an expansive park area perfect for relaxing and admiring the Flatirons if you're not in the mood to climb or hike.

Insider tip: A great hike away from the hustle and bustle of Boulder life is the 7.9-mile Walker Ranch Loop, an 8-mile drive from Chautauqua. For a less heart-pumping experience, touring the Celestial Seasonings tea factory is a blast and includes free tea sampling.

Mesa Verde National Park

It's not too often that scenic hiking areas are also steeped in history, but Mesa Verde National Park in southwest Colorado certainly has both. This national park consists of an array of preserved cliff dwellings originally built centuries ago by Ancestral Puebloans, who lived and worked in the cliffside quarters for 700 years until finally abandoning them in late A.D. 1200. Now, the remnants of this ancient civilization draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Additionally, the park is associated with 26 Native American tribes.

During your visit, make time to see Cliff Palace – the largest cliff dwelling in North America. The site features 150 rooms and 23 kivas (ceremonial underground rooms) that you can view only by guided tour. There are also plenty of hiking trails in the surrounding area. A visitor-favorite path is the moderate Point Lookout Trail (2.1 miles out and back), which boasts sweeping views of the park. The Petroglyph Point Trail (a 2.4-mile loop) is also popular, as you can admire the petroglyphs drawn on the canyon walls.

Ski in Aspen

Millions of visitors travel to this town, located about 200 miles west of Denver, each year for its ideal ski conditions and massive slopes. Aspen Snowmass is one of the country's largest ski resorts , one of Colorado's top ski destinations and one of Aspen's most popular attractions . The resort offers more than 5,000 acres of skiable terrain and nearly 50 chairlifts across four mountains – Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk – making it a prime ski destination for intermediate and advanced skiers. There are also some trails for beginners, as well as many opportunities for lessons.

Even if you're not a fan of skiing, the après-ski scene makes Aspen worth a visit. You'll find skiers flocking to the town's lounges, taverns and upscale eateries after a day on the mountain. There are several award-winning hotels in the area – such as The Little Nell and Hotel Jerome, Auberge Resorts Collection – where guests can stay close to the slopes, making for an extra easy ski day.

Catch a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre

A trip to this venue will take any concert experience to the next level. The bleacher-style seats at Red Rocks Amphitheatre are built into a cliff and surrounded by towering sandstone structures. Visitors rave about the venue's acoustics, saying it's one of the best and most unique places to witness a live performance. Concerts are usually scheduled between April and November; consult the event schedule to see when your favorite artists are performing.

Even if you can't make it for a show, Red Rocks is still a great place to visit during the day. There are several hiking trails around the concert area, including the easy Trading Post Trail (1.4 miles) and the intermediate Red Rocks and Morrison Slide trails (3 miles). Plus, from high up in the stands, you'll get panoramic views of the surrounding area. In the summer, the venue even presents drive-in movie events and morning yoga sessions.

Insider tip: You can also find plenty of beautiful hiking in nearby Mount Falcon Park, including the highly rated 3.2-mile Turkey Trot Trail loop.

Relax in the hot springs of Glenwood Springs

The small town of Glenwood Springs is situated along the Colorado River and surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. The mineral waters responsible for the town's fame come from the nearby Yampah spring, which naturally heats to about 122 degrees. In town, there are three main areas for visitors to enjoy the hot springs. Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is home to the world's largest hot springs pool, big enough for visitors to swim laps in the 90- to 93-degree water. The venue is kid-friendly and doesn't require reservations.

Another option is Iron Mountain Hot Springs, which offers a quieter atmosphere complete with 17 soaking pools – heated between 98 and 108 degrees and connected by heated walkways – and rain showers to ensure visitors can cool off when necessary. Reservations are required and weekend access often sells out, so make sure to book a time slot in advance. The Yampah Spa and Vapor Caves is another thermal attraction in Glenwood Springs, and it's one of the only vapor caves on the continent. This underground area naturally releases therapeutic steam, which visitors can enjoy by descending into the caves and lounging on the benches. Reservations for the caves are required.

Go whitewater rafting

The Arkansas River – which starts in central Colorado and runs all the way to Arkansas – features miles of fast-flowing water, perfect for adventurous rafters. Though it might seem intimidating, there are plenty of easy routes for first-time rafters or those looking for a relaxing excursion.

Lower Browns Canyon offers a few mild rapids with enough time in between to enjoy the mountain scenery. Similarly, a trip to Little Gore Canyon is sure to be leisurely and may appeal to families with younger children. The Royal Gorge trip, however, is reserved for adventurous travelers seeking steep drops, big splashes and constant rapids. The Pine Creek route, which originates near the Granite Gorge, is another strenuous option for advanced rafters. A mining village that flourished in the late 1800s, this southwestern Colorado town maintains its Wild West charm to this day. The main street is lined with quaint stores and restaurants, which are set against the dramatic backdrop of the San Juan Mountains. You won't see many fast food restaurants or chain stores here, but you will find plenty of outdoor activities in Telluride . The town offers noteworthy skiing options at Telluride Ski Resort. The free gondola is also a great activity, as it'll bring you on a scenic ride to the mountains.

While there are numerous winter adventures to be had, the spring, summer and fall months are what make this town stand out. Drive the Million Dollar Highway

There are many theories as to how this scenic highway got its name, but no matter what you believe, it's certain that the road provides million-dollar views. Start your drive in Ouray, a small town northwest of Telluride that's known as the "Switzerland of America" thanks to its European-looking storefronts and the surrounding mountains.

The 25-mile highway stretches from Ouray to Silverton and features awe-inspiring vistas, but be warned that the drive is not for the faint of heart. The road clings to the side of a cliff and provides dizzying views of the canyon below – and the lack of guardrails only adds to the danger. The road does eventually level out so drivers can relax and enjoy the scenery, but keep in mind that if you're scared of heights, this drive might not be the one for you. Be sure to check for icy or snowy conditions before making the journey.

Grand Lake is one of the best spots in Colorado for swimming, fishing, boating and soaking up some sun. This top Colorado lake – the largest in the state – is located a few miles southeast of the Grand Lake entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park and about 100 miles northwest of Denver. On the sandy shores of the lake, you'll find plenty of kids playing, adults sunbathing, and maybe even a moose or two testing the waters.

Visitors say the area is well maintained, and they appreciate the designated picnic spots. Not to mention, the jaw-dropping view of the surrounding mountains reflecting off the lake is sure to take your beach day to the next level. The lake offers a marina where visitors can opt to rent motorboats or kayaks to explore the water. The small town around the water – also called Grand Lake – features several cafes, restaurants and shops to enjoy during your visit. If you venture to Grand Lake in winter, there will still be many activities to partake in, such as ice fishing and ice hockey.

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

This national park packs plenty of scenery into a small area. Dark, jagged peaks slice into the earth, creating dramatic canyons and breathtaking views. Black Canyon of the Gunnison doesn't have as many easy hiking opportunities as other parks due to the steep nature of the canyon. For this reason, many visitors say driving is the best way to take in the views. The park is small enough that if you're driving, you can see it all in a day – though there's a good chance it'll take a long drive to get there, as it's located about 260 miles from Denver.

When arriving at the park, you can choose to explore either the North Rim or the South Rim. The North Rim offers three trails and five overlooks that you can visit by car but is overall less developed than its counterpart; many visitors prefer the South Rim for its four hiking trails and 12 overlooks. Each rim features a campground as well, but the South Rim Campground is much larger and includes more amenities.

Insider tip: Bring a canopy tent if you plan to stay in the South Rim Campground as the trees are short and don't offer much in the way of shade. Also, make sure to drive around the park at sunset for spectacular views.

Ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

Take a train back in time on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Construction on this historic railroad began in 1881; once it was completed in 1882, the railroad brought tons of gold and silver from the mountains to the towns. People also used this train to travel between towns, and they quickly realized the scenery along the way was nothing short of stunning. The railroad winds through the San Juan Mountains and chugs up Cascade Canyon – a visitor-favorite view.

The train from Durango to Silverton takes less than four hours; passengers can explore the historic mining town of Silverton for two hours before returning for the train ride back. You'll have to reserve tickets in advance online or by calling.

Breckenridge

If you're looking for an easy getaway from Denver, head to Breckenridge for some of the best ski conditions in the state. Breckenridge Ski Resort has a whopping 187 trails and 35 lifts as well as several terrain parks. The free gondola, which runs from the downtown area to the base of the ski mountain, is a great way to enjoy the mountain views even if you don't plan on hitting the slopes.

Downtown Breckenridge has plenty to offer in the way of food, beverages and treats as well as clothing stores, souvenir shops and a thriving arts district. The surrounding area offers a variety of hiking and biking trails – such as the highly rated McCullough Gulch Trail, the Hoosier Pass Loop and the Sawmill Reservoir trail.

Visit Colorado's wine country

Most people associate Colorado with craft beer and countless breweries . However, you may be surprised to learn that Colorado also produces its fair share of wine. The state's "wine country" is located on the western edge of Colorado near the city of Grand Junction, where the cool, dry mountain climate and high elevation work together to create an ideal wine-making environment.

You'll find wineries and tasting rooms galore in Grand Junction and nearby Palisade. According to recent visitors, some of the top options include Carlson Vineyards Winery & Tasting Room, Varaison Vineyards and Winery, and Peach Street Distillers. Some visitors recommend touring Colorado's wine country on an e-bike for an extra dose of fun. When it comes time to rest, turn down at one of the best hotels in Grand Junction , most of which are conveniently located near the bars and restaurants of Main Street.

Insider tip: A stay at Palisade's Wine Country Inn makes for the perfect romantic getaway in Colorado . Cross the Royal Gorge Bridge

If you want to get your heart pumping, look no further than the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park , located about 60 miles southwest of Colorado Springs. The bridge is the highest suspension bridge in the U.S. at 956 feet above the Arkansas River. Crossing the bridge is not for the faint of heart, but don't worry – the engineering feat is supported by 4,100 sturdy cables and can hold more than 2 million pounds. If you're still (understandably) nervous about walking over the bridge, however, some visitors recommend riding the Aerial Gondola across it first.

There's an activity for everyone at the park, from the three-story Playland for kids to the Cloudscraper Zip Line – the highest zip line in America – and the Royal Rush Skycoaster for thrill-seekers. Travelers recommend going in the offseason for smaller crowds.

Enjoy family-friendly fun in Steamboat Springs

This northwestern Colorado city is known for its ski offerings and hot springs. The ski mountain offers 182 trails, 23 lifts and four terrain parks, each for a different skill level. After skiing, pay a visit to the Old Town Hot Springs in the heart of downtown, which features several designated pools as well as two waterslides open seasonally. If you're not into downhill skiing, you can still enjoy other Steamboat Springs activities , including cross-country skiing , horseback riding, snowmobiling , ice skating, tubing and scenic gondola rides. In the summer, enjoy hiking, mountain biking and fly-fishing; there are also many local lakes perfect for swimming or paddleboarding.

Go leaf peeping

The fall season in Colorado is particularly stunning as the trees, most notably aspens, start to change color. Drive the highest road in North America

The Scenic Byway to Blue Sky, which begins 33 miles west of Denver, climbs to the peak of Mount Blue Sky (formerly Mount Evans) and offers stunning mountain views along the way. You'll start in Idaho Springs, then gain about 7,000 feet in elevation as you twist and turn along the 28-mile road to the 14,130-foot summit. Keep your eyes peeled for wild animals such as mountain goats, bighorn sheep and marmots.

Due to potentially dangerous winter conditions, cars are only permitted to drive to the peak from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and reservations are required. If you're an avid hiker, you also have the option to complete the challenging hike to the peak, but note that it's one of the more popular 14ers to climb.

Experience small-town life in Salida

Visiting small towns like Salida is one of the best ways to experience the Centennial State. Salida sits about 140 miles south of Denver and offers plenty of quaint Colorado charm. As you walk down F Street, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time thanks to preserved buildings reminiscent of the Wild West and retro stores like the F Street Five & Dime and the Salida Pharmacy & Fountain. The downtown area is the state's largest historic district. Colorado primary election: Lauren Boebert wins Republican CD4 race, other Tuesday updates

Tuesday, June 25 — otherwise known as Colorado's state primary election.

There was also a special election to identify who will replace former Rep. Ken Buck, R-Colo. — who stepped down from his seat representing the 4th Congressional District on March 22 — for the remainder of the term.

Below are Tuesday's updates on contested races with ties to Larimer County. We added the most recent updates to the top of the below section.

John Padora: 'I'm disappointed by the outcome' in Democratic CD4 primary

In an email to The Coloradoan, 4th Congressional District Democratic candidate John Padora shared his disappointment over unofficial election results showing he received about 14% of results while candidate Trisha Calvarese received about 45% of votes and candidate Ike McCorkle received about 41% of votes. 

"It's clear that we didn't achieve the results we hoped for in this primary, and I'm disappointed by the outcome. However, I couldn't be prouder of our supporters, volunteers, staff, and the hard work that went into running a solid campaign. I sincerely hope Lauren Boebert doesn't represent us in Congress. This campaign has been a life-changing experience, and I deeply appreciate all the incredible people I've met throughout the district and the connections we've forged, bringing me closer to our community," he said.

Trisha Calvarese celebrates projected win in Democratic CD4 primary

In an email to The Coloradoan, 4th Congressional District Democratic candidate Trisha Calvarese celebrated her projected primary win. As of with about 11:30, Calvarese — who faced two opponents in the race — had over 45% of votes, based on the unofficial results.

"I showed up months after my parents both died of cancer last to this race, with no money, an accidental self inflicted mullet, and a cell phone. And here we are," Calvarese said. "The kindness, compassion, and time folks have invested in this campaign are a gift. They've shared their sorrow and heartbreak. And they have confirmed the values that I was raised on right here in Douglas County. That ordinary people can step up in the face of adversity and prevail. That we can choose hope over fear, community over division. I learned that from folks like Ms. Jo Grasso, my Highlands Ranch High School English teacher. I heard from her today. She told me to stand up, to be counted. That's what I'm doing. I am so proud to be a daughter of the district and honored to have won the Democratic primary to represent Colorado's 4th Congressional, my home district."

In addition to running in the Democratic primary for the CD4 seat, Calvarese was also in the running to complete the remainder of former Rep. Ken Buck's term. Buck stepped down from his seat representing the 4th Congressional District on March 22 .

Calvarese made no comment on her projected loss to special election Republican candidate Greg Lopez, who is winning with over 58% of votes.

Ben 'Uncle Benny' Aste has nearly 60% of vote in Republican primary for Board of County Commissioners

Ben "Uncle Benny" Aste's lead over Paul Rennemeyer in the Republican primary race for Larimer County Board of County Commissioners District 3 is growing. As of Larimer County's late-night release of updated election results, Aste had nearly 60% of the vote.

The county isn't done processing results but is taking a break for the night and said on its results page that counting will resume Wednesday.

Yara Zokaie calls projected win in Colorado House District 52 race 'honor of a lifetime'

House District 52 Democratic candidate Yara Zokaie thanked voters for "the honor of a lifetime" in response to her projected House District 52 Democratic candidate win with 62% of votes so far.

"I thank my opponent for a great discussion of ideas during this process," Zokaie said in an email to The Coloradoan. "Our win just solidifies my belief that people power can beat big money. I look forward to a strong campaign in the general election this fall, and hope we can come together as a community to protect our environment, support our schools, and ensure access to healthcare for everyone."

Ethne Treick: 'I'm proud of the campaign we've run' in Colorado House District 52

In an email to The Coloradoan, Colorado House District 52 Democratic candidate Ethnie Treick expressed her disappointment of the unofficial election results. As of 11:10 p.m., unofficial results show that Treick has about half as many votes has her competitor, Yara Zokaie. Zokaie had 6,046 votes so far, while Treick had 3,715 votes.

"While the results aren’t what we hoped they’d be, I’m proud of the campaign we’ve run — it’s always been focused on the community and the issues people really care about. I feel immense gratitude for the connections I’ve had with voters on their doorsteps and I want to continue moving these issues forward," Treick said. 

Larimer, Weld counties among those still reporting election results in Colorado primary

Shortly before 11 p.m., Larimer County and Weld County remained two of only 11 counties yet to complete their election night reporting. The reporting is of unofficial results, and results won't be certified for up to several weeks following the election.

Larimer County's results page said its next round of results will come "no later than midnight."

Ike McCorkle on Trisha Calvarese lead: Race to represent Democratic party in CD4 race 'too close to call'

4th Congressional District Democratic candidate Ike McCorkle told The Coloradoan in an email that he is not conceding to Democratic candidate Trisha Calvarese yet. 

Calvarese has 20,300 votes and McCorkle has 18,325, according to unofficial results.

"With several thousand votes left to count, the race remains too close to call. I want to sincerely thank the over 18,000 Coloradans whose votes have been counted for us so far, and we will continue to watch the results unfold," McCorkle said.

Counties still in progress of reporting within the 4th Congressional District include Larimer, Weld, Adams and Arapahoe.

Yara Zokaie maintains lead in Democratic primary for Colorado House District 52

According to unofficial results, Yara Zokaie is maintaining her lead in the Democratic primary for House District 52, over Ethnie Treick with nearly 62% of the vote.

Lesley Smith maintains lead in Democratic primary for Colorado House District 49

Lesley Smith is maintaining a strong lead in the Democratic primary for Colorado House District 49 over Max Woodfin with about 71% of the votes so far, according to unofficial results.

Lori Garcia Sander maintains lead in Republican primary for Colorado House District 65

Lori Garcia Sander is currently beating Trent Lane Leisy in the Republican primary for Colorado State House District 65. Sander has received nearly 63% of reported votes thus far, according to unofficial election results.

Barb Kirkmeyer maintains lead in Republican primary for Colorado Senate District 23

Incumbent Barb Kirkmeyer maintains her commanding lead over Natalie Abshier in the Republican race for the Colorado Senate District 23 bid. Kirkmeyer currently has nearly 12,684 of the counted votes, according to unofficial election results, compared to 4,686 for Abshier.

Calvarese maintains lead in Democratic primary for 4th Congressional District

According to unofficial results, Trisha Calvarese is maintaining her lead in the 4th Congressional District Democratic race with over 45% of votes. Ike McCorkle has over 41% and John Padora Jr. has over 13% of votes so far.

Kristi Burton Brown maintains lead in Republican primary for 4th Congressional District State Board of Education seat

Kristi Burton Brown currently holds a lead over Saundra Larsen in the Republican primary for the Congressional District 4 State Board of Education seat. She has nearly 49,919 votes reported thus far, according to unofficial election results, compared to 44,228 for Larsen.

Greg Lopez maintains lead in special election to fill former Rep. Ken Buck's CD4 seat

Republican Greg Lopez maintains a commanding lead in the CD4 Congressional Vacancy Election, with nearly 59% of the votes, according to unofficial election results. Democrat Trisha Eloise Calvarese currently has nearly 34% of the votes.

The winner will serve the remainder of former Rep. Ken Buck's term. On March 22, Buck stepped down from the seat.

Marisol Rodriguez: 'I personally congratulated Kathy Gebhardt on her win' in State Board of Education race

In a press release, 2nd Congressional District Board of Education Democratic candidate Marisol Rodriguez stated that she doesn't see a path to victory tonight and congratulated Kathy Gebhardt on her projected win.

"I would like to thank all of the voters who supported me and shared my vision for how we can empower our education system to better support our students and their families," Rodriguez said. "I personally congratulated Kathy Gebhardt on her win tonight and wish her every success in the general election in November."

She secured nearly 43% of the first 94,000 votes counted, compared to just 14.08% for second place Jerry Sonnenberg at the moment.

Ben 'Uncle Benny' Aste leads Republican Larimer County Board of County Commissioners District 3 race

Ben "Uncle Benny" Aste has about 58% of votes counted so far in the Republican primary election for Larimer County Board of County Commissioners District 3. Aste has received 13,594 votes, while Paul Rennemeyer has received 9,679.

The winner will face incumbent Jody Shadduck-McNally in November.

Trisha Calvarese wins chance to take on Lauren Boebert in 4th District race

Trisha Calvarese won a three-way race to become the Democratic Party’s 2024 nominee in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District.

The Associated Press called the race at 11:33 p.m. Tuesday.

As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, Calvarese led with 45% of the primary vote, ahead of Marine veteran Ike McCorkle with 41% and John Padora with 14%.

Calvarese will now face U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, who won the 4th District Republican primary on Tuesday, in the November general election. Boebert announced in December that she would move across the state to seek the 4th District seat after two terms representing the 3rd District on the Western Slope, where she nearly lost reelection in 2022 .

Republicans are heavily favored in the 4th District, which includes Douglas County and much of Colorado’s Eastern Plains. Nearly three times as many Republican ballots were returned in the 4th District’s closely-watched GOP primary on Tuesday as Boebert easily prevailed over her five opponents.

The 4th District seat was previously held by former U.S. Rep. Ken Buck, who resigned in March after serving in Congress for nine years. Buck’s resignation triggered a special election to fill out the remaining six months of his term, which was also held Tuesday.

McCorkle unsuccessfully challenged Buck in both 2020 and 2022. He reported by far the highest fundraising totals in the Democratic primary race, with nearly $1.5 million in contributions received as of June 5. He qualified for the primary ballot through petition signatures.

Calvarese, a former communications staffer for the AFL-CIO and the National Science Foundation, was a candidate in both the primary and Tuesday’s special election — which she lost to Republican Greg Lopez — after being selected in April  by a committee of about 120 Democrats in the 4th District. Separately, she qualified later that month for the primary ballot after receiving 57.8% of delegate support at the district’s Democratic assembly.

Padora, an engineer and addiction recovery advocate, also qualified for the primary ballot through the assembly process, receiving 33.9% of delegate support. He moved to Colorado in 2021, after unsuccessfully seeking a state House seat in his home state of Pennsylvania.

Rep. Lauren Boebert wins GOP primary after switching districts

Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., won her GOP primary Tuesday, NBC News projects, after she decided to run in a different district from the one where she narrowly won re-election in 2022. 

Boebert defeated five other Republicans for the party’s nomination in Colorado’s 4th District, which opened up after Rep. Ken Buck announced this year that he would resign. She will be heavily favored to win the seat in the general election given the area’s rightward lean. 

Boebert, who is in her second term, eked out a 546-vote victory in the neighboring 3rd District two years ago and faced the prospect of a rematch with Adam Frisch, a well-funded Democrat. Former President Donald Trump won the 4th District by 19 points, while he carried the 3rd District by 8 points in 2020, according to calculations from Daily Kos Elections .

Boebert, whom Trump backed, built a national profile as a conservative firebrand after she pulled off a surprising 2020 GOP primary win against then-Rep. Scott Tipton, in part by promising to take on high-profile liberal figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y. 

“Since the first day I ran for public office I promised I would do whatever it takes to stop the socialists and communists from taking over our country,” Boebert said in December when she announced her decision to run in the 4th District. “That means staying in the fight. But it also means not allowing Hollywood elites and progressive money groups to buy the 3rd District.”

Boebert also said the move would be a “fresh start” after a difficult year for her personally, noting she and her husband had divorced. She was granted a temporary restraining order against her ex-husband in February. She also grabbed headlines last year for being escorted out of a musical for allegedly “vaping, singing [and] causing a disturbance.”

Boebert’s decision to run in the neighboring 4th District also shook up the GOP primary in the more competitive 3rd District, where Frisch, a former member of the Aspen City Council, cleared the Democratic field and won the party's nomination.

Attorney Jeff Hurd won the GOP primary to face Frisch in the fall, NBC News projects, overcoming a Democratic effort to meddle in the Republican contest and secure an opponent who could be easier to beat in November.

A Democratic outside group launched a TV ad appearing to boost controversial former state Rep. Ron Hanks, according to The Colorado Sun . Hanks has denied the 2020 election results, and he marched to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. He also ran unsuccessfully in the GOP Senate primary in 2022. 

The Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with House GOP leadership, countered the effort with its own TV ad targeting Hanks. Frisch also appeared to play in the primary by launching a TV ad aimed at Hurd, potentially damaging his standing among conservative voters by suggesting his positions on abortion and Trump are unclear. 

In the deep-red 5th District, Republicans selected political consultant Jeff Cranks, a former radio host, to replace retiring GOP Rep. Doug Lamborn. 

Crank’s victory is a blow to Trump, who had endorsed state GOP Chairman Dave Williams. Crank had support from House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana and a few other congressional Republicans.

New member of Congress

Boebert also decided not to run in the special election to serve out the rest of Buck’s term, opting to remain in Congress and continue representing the 3rd District. 

Republican George Lopez won the special election Tuesday to replace Buck, NBC News projects, meaning Lopez will soon head to the House and help pad Republicans’ thin majority. Lopez did not run for a full term, so he will serve in Congress for only about six months. 

Lopez, a former state director for the Small Business Administration and a former mayor of Parker, has run for office multiple times, including having made unsuccessful bids for governor in 2022 and 2018. He is a staunch conservative and has taken some far-right positions , including casting doubt on the 2020 election results. He also does not support any exceptions to a ban on abortions.

Tuesday’s primaries also set the matchup in Colorado’s 8th District, which is expected to be one of the most competitive House races in the country this year.

As expected, state Rep. Gave Evans won the GOP primary to take on Democratic Rep. Yadira Caraveo, who won her first term in 2022 by just 1 percentage point. Evans was the top fundraiser in the GOP primary and had Trump’s endorsement.

Colorado ballot initiative proposing ban on gender-affirming care for youth is rejected by state Supreme Court

D ENVER — The Colorado Supreme Court on Monday rejected a proposed ballot measure that would have broadly banned gender-affirming care and surgery for minors.

The court ruled that the supporters of Initiative 175 had not quickly enough appealed a state administrative board’s rejection of the proposal. If it had advanced and then passed in November, the measure would have prohibited the use of surgeries or hormone treatments on people younger than 18 unless necessary for reasons other than gender affirmation, like premature puberty or a birth defect.

The Colorado Title Board, the administrative body that approves and rejects ballot measures, at first approved the initiative earlier this spring — and then rejected it after receiving an appeal from opponents. Supporters then adjusted the language, but the title board rejected it again.

That prompted the Supreme Court challenge and the court’s Monday ruling that the challenge had been filed outside the required seven-day window. The unanimous opinion was written by Justice Melissa Hart.

“As we approach the end of Pride Month, we are thrilled that the Colorado Supreme Court has denied the appeal of a vocal minority who would make it illegal to provide medically necessary care to transgender people,” said Mardi Moore, the executive director of Rocky Mountain Equality, in a news release.

The initiative was backed by Wayde Goodall, an author and Christian academic with ties to Focus on the Family, and Darcy Schoening, the former co-chair of El Paso County’s Moms for Liberty chapter who now says she works for the Colorado Republican Party .
