A Travel Editor's Best Travel Outfits for Long Flights

@sophiemiura / Instagram

There's a certain art to building the perfect travel outfit. Last year, I spent 203 hours on airplanes jetting from New York to Tahiti, Australia, Finland, Japan, and more as part of my job as an editor and travel writer. When I'm not reviewing new hotels and airlines for work, I try to squeeze in the odd trip to explore under-the-radar vacation spots at my own pace. So trust me when I say, I've had enough practice refining the best travel outfits for long flights.

I have two rules when it comes to dressing for a long-haul flight : It has to be comfortable and something I wouldn't mind being seen in if I bumped into a coworker. With that in mind, I think I've found the best travel outfit formula. Here are the exact items I mix and match on a flight, depending on my mood and the destination. Every item ticks the boxes: They're incredibly well made, stretch, don't rub, are casually stylish, and stand up to the rigors of flight after flight.

Keep scrolling for my must-have travel and airport outfit essentials—accessories included—for the next time you take to the skies.

Holdall Duffle

This is my go-to carry-on for weekend trips. I love the leather straps, waterproof material, and the fact that I'm never asked to check it in if the overhead bins are full. Made out of 14 upcycled plastic water bottles and natural cotton, it gets bonus points for being eco-friendly too.

Durable Carry-On

A recent trip to L.A. revealed that the entire MyDomaine team swears by Away luggage . The carry-on features a hidden laundry bag, not to mention, the hard shell means I never think twice about bringing a bottle of wine back from vacation.

Enclosed Lace-Up Shoes

I prefer to wear these Thousand Fell sneakers if I'm traveling for work and want to look a bit more polished. Lace-up sneakers are a must at airports: I can loosen the laces when my feet swell midair and don't feel gross in socks when I have to take them off to pass through security.

Leather Jacket

I always travel with a leather jacket because it makes my outfit look cool and styled, even if I'm wearing sneakers and leggings. This jacket by Topshop has been on my wishlist for months.

Loose-Fitting Top

We all love Madewell's relaxed basics for traveling. This scoop-neck T-shirt is loose and layers well with a leather jacket and cardigan. The price tag might sound steep for a basic tee but the supersoft Peruvian Pima cotton is worth the splurge.

No-Frills Leggings

These shape-sculpting leggings are my travelwear go-to. They are comfy, silky soft, and have a flattering high waist. Best of all, the fabric is quick-drying, which comes in handy when you spill a drink due to unexpected turbulence—or maybe just clumsiness.

Black Jeans

I prefer to wear leggings, but if I'm lucky enough to be flying in business class, I try to look a bit more presentable. Topshop's Jamie jeans are the only ones I wear on a flight. They have so much stretch and a high waistband that's comfortable even if I feel bloated midair.

Quality Headphones

Screaming babies, loud talkers, and a plane's white noise are no match for these B&O Play over-ear headphones. Not only do they muffle noisy passengers and vessels so that I can enjoy my in-flight entertainment in peace, but they look super stylish while doing so. I don't fly without them.

Opt for noise-cancelling headphones to ensure a stress-free flight.

Parachute's Merino Travel Kit makes coach feel like first class. I find the warm blanket makes it easier to get quality sleep on a flight and sometimes wrap it around myself like a scarf when the cabin is cold. Plus, it comes in a zip-up wool bag that is the perfect travel pillowcase.

Waterproof Tote

I've had this Longchamp tote for over five years, and it's lasted countless flights and adventures. The waterproof outer casing means that the contents are protected from any spills, and it folds up into a flat package to be stored in my luggage when I arrive at the destination.

Personal Handbag

This is the perfect crossbody bag for travel: It's small, but still fits a phone and passport, zips up for safety, is made from durable leather, and can be monogrammed so you'll never mix it up with a stranger's bag.

Key Takeaways

  • Prioritize these three things when it comes to travel fashion — comfort, versatility, and layers.
  • You can't go wrong with sneakers, a great pear of leggings (or comfortable denim) plus a solid tee with jacket or sweater for temp changes.
  • Sneakers, a go-to carry-on and headphones are non-negotiables, too.

What is the best outfit to wear on a plane?

The best outfit to wear on a plane is one that is comfortable and non-restrictive.

Look for sets or pieces made from stretchy, non-irritating and breathable materials, such as cotton. Athleisure styles are generally a good option, as they’re stylish, flexible and warm enough to keep you cozy at high altitudes.

We love the lululemon Wunder Train High-Rise Crop 23-Inch Leggings for travel. They’re soft, look super cute with a hoodie and sneakers, plus have a hidden drawstring for an adjustable fit.

Another option we love comes from Spanx, specifically, the Spanx AirEssentials Cropped Wide Leg Pants and Spanx AirEssentials Half Zip . They don’t come in a set, unfortunately, but the pants have that ever-cool relaxed but tailored look, which will make you look put together, especially when paired with the zip-up.

What shoes to wear on a plane?

The best shoes to wear on a plane are ones that are comfortable and that can be easily taken off and back on when going through TSA.

We like Allbirds Tree Dasher’s 2 . It has a no-slip heel collar for a secure fit, as well as a cushy sole for hours of walking. Most importantly, it can be slipped on and off with ease when needed.

What to Wear On A Plane

Written by: Niki Landry

Table Of Contents

Over the last few years, I’ve developed a sort of formula for long-haul trips. I know the clothes I prefer to wear from my travel capsule wardrobe , I have my electronics and airplane toiletries readily available, and my water bottle is full before boarding the plane.

These are the small steps I take to make my airport and plane experience tolerable, if not enjoyable. It all begins with my outfit, though. If I’m wearing the wrong clothes, it can throw everything out of order. Wear these suggested outfits on the plane or pack individual outfits in each packing cube as shown in this video!

To help you plan what to wear on a plane, I’ve put together 5 airplane-friendly outfits that work well for long-haul trips.

Casual-Chic Outfit

My first outfit involves leggings, some cute espadrilles, and a chic, yet practical backpack. I try to balance fashion with the need for practicality as much as possible. Here’s a quick breakdown of the essential items:

Our readers’ all time favorite style to wear at home and while traveling is the Zella Live In leggings , available in sizes XXS-XXL .

I don’t leave home without a pair of black leggings ; in fact, I am usually wearing them out the door. They are the ultimate in comfort and my favorite bottoms to wear on planes.

The dark color helps conceal any mishaps or spills, the stretch is perfect for extended periods of sitting, and they keep you warm when the plane inevitably becomes freezing mid-flight.

You can also find out more in our Zella leggings review !

SSOULM Peplum Top

I paired these leggings with a comfy yet classic peplum top and a lightweight open cardigan . A peplum top is a terrific basic that has flair and can be dressed up or down. The one pictured above by SSOLUM is available in sizes S-XL and 1X-3X .

Both the peplum and a cardigan would pair well with any number of bottoms once you get to your destination.

My go-to bag is the Longchamp backpack which is well loved by TFG readers and by me! It’s nylon, so quite durable, yet the leather trim adds a stylish finish and it fits all my airplane essentials like a tablet and a small toiletry kit to freshen up.

And once I land I can use it as my day bag!

Shop Madewell: XXS-XXL |  1X-4X

Madewell Denim Jacket

When I know sunnier skies are waiting for me, I go for a light jacket like this one from Madewell. I always wear or hold my jacket on the plane. It doubles as a makeshift blanket during nap time. The one highlighted comes in sizes XXS-XXL and 1X-4X .

I will also layer a t-shirt over a sleeveless maxi for extra warmth–and to make my bag a little lighter. (Here are some tips on how to layer clothes .)

Vionic Rest Kirra Backstrap Sandal

For shoes, I will wear some strappy sandals that have a pop of color, like silver or metallic but can still act as neutral. These ones from Vionic are sleek, yet their orthotic arch support makes them perfect for walking around at my intended destination.

Urban-Chic Outfit

When you’re planning what to wear on a plane, keep in mind that it’s best to avoid tight-fitting clothing while sitting for extended periods of time. Speaking of tight fitting, my fourth outfit does consist of jeans but they are stretchy and I pair them with a cozy cardigan , and ankle boots . Here’s a quick breakdown of the essential items:

If you like to wear denim, opt for looser-fitting boyfriend jeans or a stretchy comfortable pair such as this style by prAna . They won’t constrict movement on board but can be wearable for sightseeing or dressed up with flats for a night out.

You can grab these jeans in sizes 0-18 .

Cozy-Chic Outfit

You’ll notice that in all of these outfits, the legs are covered. That’s for two reasons: airports and planes are always cold, and you can keep your luggage light by wearing some of your bulkier clothing on the plane. Hence, my fifth outfit entails just that, a jacket to snuggle up in, along with comfortable leggings , and must-have flats. Here’s a quick breakdown of the essential items:

Hi Nikki, Are there any plans to update this article with links that work? Many of these styles are no longer available and I’m sure there are current options that you’ve found since? I realize that links get outdated quickly and that’s the issue with great/helpful articles like this but an update every few years would be so helpful and appreciated.

Alex

Sophie

Hi Alex thank you for the advice! However, I am still a bit stuck in what to wear tomorrow (1 hour and 50 minutes long). I normally wear leggings so if you haven’t replied today or tomorrow morning (I don’t mind I am late anyway) I will wear them. Sophie X

Hi Sophie, for some other ideas for outfits for flying in, have a look at this post: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/airplane-outfit/ The best tip is to wear what you feel comfortable wearing!! Have an amazing trip! 🙂

Catherine

I’m cold at the best of times so on planes I’m freezing so I wear lots of light, long sleeved, crew neck layers and a light hoodie. I have a four-pocket jacket which holds all my essentials and even my Kindle! For my next long-haul flight I’m planning to wear my heavier shoes to travel in but clip my Crocs flats to the outside of my bag so I can slip them on and off for walking about the plane. For Christmas I got a lovely purple-check blanket scarf which will do as both a scarf and a blanket!

Hi Catherine, that is great advice, thank you for sharing it! 🙂

Kelly

What would be a good travel outfit if you are going to Aruba in July?

alex

Hi Kelly, you can find some tips in our Aruba article: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-pack-for-aruba/

Lindsey

I find I usually wear jeans on the plane, as they are usually my heaviest clothin item. I would love to wear the leggings outfit above, but I haven’t quite yet figured out how to lighten my load when packing jeans.

That’s a good point! If I’m tight with weight in my suitcase I’ll wear the jeans on the plane. If I have a little room, I’ll go for the leggings 😉

Daphne

Thank you for this most informative article. I leave South Africa in a couple of weeks for South America and New Zealand.

Yoga pants or stretch denim – anything stretchy is comfortable. And always a shawl that can double as a scarf, and triple as another blanket layer on areas of your body that get particularly cold (e.g. knees or neck).

Great tip! Thanks Cynthia 🙂

I also find comfortable clothing key on long flights (well any flights really!). Thanks for the suggestions

Comfort is key!

TANYA

I found this post particularly interesting because I have two big trips this summer. I have one east to west coast Canada early morning flight, and another red-eye to the UK. To endure these long and uncomfortable flights these suggestions have been very helpful and I’ve already made a few purchases based on this list. I also came across HUE Travelista leggings which have side pockets that can be added to the list. Thanks!

So glad you found this post useful Tanya 🙂 Those leggings sound awesome too!

So glad I read this! Preparing for return flights to Dublin from Vancouver in January with a connection so this is going to come in really handy along with the Winter Signature Essentials packing list.

Glad you found it useful 🙂 Have an awesome time!

Having a few go-to pieces for airline travel always makes me feel like there’s one less thing I have to worry about when traveling. Jeggings, check. Cute cardigan, check. Comfy tshirt, check. Least uncomforatble bra I own, check. 🙂

Exactly! It makes all the difference 🙂

Best Advice About What To Wear On A Long-Haul Flight

Michela Travel Tips Flight Travel 2

Preparing and Packing for A Long-Haul Flight

Preparing for the long haul flight is, for many (me included), the less attractive part of the whole trip planning. It takes time and knowledge because of many variables that impact the flight. Knowing what to wear on long-haul flights is critical to overall flight health. When you fly long hours on long-haul flights with layovers , there are three elements that you need to consider:

Table of Contents

  • Wearing the right clothes for maximum comfort Nothing is worse than feeling cold or uncomfortable when sitting on a plane for long hours. The layer principle, coupled with loose, stretch pants and warm, soft tops, is the basis for creating an outfit on a plane .
  • Eating and Drinking the right things Proper preparation for the long flight starts by eating the right food and drinking plenty of fresh water. In this post, I have compiled a checklist of how to prepare for the
  • Adjusting your body to a new time zone A long-haul flight means sitting for long hours, so it’s hard not to feel exhausted and sleep-deprived, have a stiff neck, tingling in your feet, swollen ankles, and suffer from the conditioned air.

That’s why following the above tips and wearing the right clothes can make a difference when preparing for a long-haul flight. While I am always looking for new garments that add more comfort to my long flights, I have created the plane outfit that has worked well for me over the years. Here are some great tips to help you choose what to wear for flying long distances.

How to create the best outfit for the long flight

Unfortunately, there isn’t one solution that fits all. However, a universal golden rule is to avoid tight clothing that clings around your chest and legs. I recommend wearing functional clothing on the plane. The most important thing about wearing available thermal clothes is that they help regulate your body temperature and keep you warm.

Nothing is worse than feeling cold when sitting on a plane for long hours. With the cabin air pressure change, the temperature quickly changes from warm to cold. Feeling stiff and uncomfortable and not sleeping on a plane is the precondition for severe jet lag symptoms.

The best travel outfits for a long-haul flight

One important thing to consider is wearing clothes in layers that you can easily remove or add. The best way to create this long-flight outfit is to wear a micro-fleece long-sleeve T-shirt and a warm jumper. I love to wear a zipped fleece jumper with side pockets to have more freedom with my arms.

  • Lightweight Functional Clothes to keep you warm on a plane Lightweight, comfy pants are what I recommend wearing on a long flight. Choose loose, soft pants if you wear compression stockings underneath. Many underestimate the fact that flying at high altitudes in a pressured cabin for long hours can do lots of damage to your legs and veins. Clogs in your blood can form and lead to DVT, too.
  • Wear Compression socks to protect your veins. If you care for your vein health, you should always wear compression socks or medical stockings as a woman and a man. It’s only ten years ago when I started using compression stockings, and since then, I never fly without my Mediven Elegance stockings . The protection of medical socks provide to my legs is priceless.
  • Create a layers outfit for the plane Alternatively, you can wear a thermal base layer underneath your clothes, but while this is an excellent way to keep you warm, it will not protect your veins. Stretch leggings are another superb piece of garment for an aeroplane outfit. Choose thermal leggings to keep your legs warm and protected from the conditioned air.
  • Keep your neck and head warm. Remember to protect your head and neck with a soft, warm silk scarf. Pashmina and Fleece are also great textiles for scarves. This is another garment that completes the perfect travel plane outfit.
  • Wear comfy sneakers As for the shoes, flat shoes are a must. My walking boots used to be my first choice to save space from the checked luggage, but any comfy sneakers or training shoes are an excellent option for long flights.

Travel gear that improves comfort on the plane

Wearing the proper clothing is a crucial step towards a comfy long flight. However, there are travel essentials that will enhance the well-being of an aircraft. Here is my list

First, an aeroplane travel pillow will provide head and neck support, helping you fall asleep and stay asleep longer. Choosing the right travel pillow for a long-haul flight isn’t easy because it depends on many factors, such as individual needs, travel style, space, and weight.

Inflatable pillows are the most used on planes, but they are useless while they work well for others. Foam U-shaped pillows can be a great option; they perform better but are heavier and take up much more space than inflatable ones. So you need to consider whether you can carry it in your bag.

In this article, you can find in-depth tips on choosing the most suitable pillows for the aeroplane .

Create your long-haul flight essentials.

Besides wearing the proper clothes and having the right gear like a travel pillow, and noise-cancelling headphones, packing all personal travel essentials is critical. As cabin luggage space is limited, I take my multi-functional daypack , which I use for all my outdoor activities and a laptop bag.

These are my best tips on how to pack your hand luggage for a long flight:

  • Essential Toiletries for the long trip I store all my plane essentials in a small bag; this is practical when using the toilets on the plane. Keep it stored in your cabin carry-on. I put my toiletries in a small zipped bag, such as face wash and cream, teeth brush and toothpaste, eye drops, face and hand wipes, hand sanitiser, hairbrush, lip balm, and lavender essential oil.
  • What food to eat on a plane Can you take food onboard? Yes, if it is dry food and in a package. I never travel without organic fruit bars, dark chocolate, crackers, herbal tea bags, and food supplements like Vitamin C, OPC, which help combat jet lag .
  • Personal Garments to pack in your cabin bag These are the items that I first pack into my cabin hand luggage:
  • Fresh underwear and panty liners
  • Snacks and fruit bars for the plane
  • Herbal tea bags

You must pack your hand luggage with all long-haul flight essentials that comply with the airport rules and airline baggage restrictions and allow you to survive the long flight and be self-sufficient on a plane and on layovers at connecting airports .

The average length of long flights ranges between 8 to 24 hours, with 1 or 2 layovers at international airports. I prefer booking flights with connecting airports you know well and offering maximum comfort. Stick to the airport that you know well. My favourite is Singapore and Dubai Airport.

good blog post, this is nice.

Hello, I have read some on compression socks and even underwear? We, the wife and I have used compression socks for long flights and they seem to work well and you don’t even feel them after awhile. We have another long 12 hour day coming up and I found men’s compression underwear saying they could be helpful for men. Not sure if I will buy them yet. Men’s health magazine recommends them. I know that your not a man lol, but what is your take on them? You’re right about comfortable clothing, it’s makes a big difference when traveling which I prefer whenever possible. I have also traveled over 40 years, now retired out of the Military.

You have a lot of good information that I have been using for a long time. Don’t forget about your entertainment, books, games movies saved on your mobile device because internet is not always reliable on acft. And bring your own water bottle, fill it up once you go through the TSA screening , if you drink 8 oz of water every hour this will help you from being dehydrated and feeling less jet lag and wiped out. We also love healthy trail mix.

Happy and safe travels.. 😊

Tips for What to Wear on a Plane

Business travel outfit, long-haul flight travel outfit, warm weather travel outfit, cold weather travel outfit, frequently asked questions.

  • Why Trust T+L

Travel + Leisure / Kevin Liang

As a professional travel writer and all-around wanderluster, I spend a lot of time on planes. Just about every month, I’m flying somewhere. Whether it be a short-haul domestic flight from my home base in Los Angeles to a favorite leisure destination like Las Vegas, or a super long-haul leg to Europe, Asia, or a speck of island in the South Pacific, you can find me on a plane up to 50 times a year for everything from a family vacation to a business trip.

As such, I’ve done a lot of road testing of travel wardrobe and narrowed down my packing list to a tidy roster of versatile essentials to wear for flying — no matter the climate or the purpose of the trip, so I stay comfortable, stylish, and polished looking. These are my trusty go-tos for what to wear on a plane, with a particular focus on versatility so you can make efficient use of your airplane style at your destination, too.

Layering and accessories are your best friend

Even when it’s warm outside, air-conditioned airplane cabins can freeze. Likewise, when it’s cold outside, the cabin could feel downright stuffy. That’s why layers are key to comfortable flying, no matter the season. Bring a jacket, shawl, cardigan, or cozy socks as additional layers. Or, if you’re wearing a dress or skirt, pop a pair of leggings in your carry-on to put on if the cabin gets cold.

Strike for a balance between comfort and style

While dressing for comfort is essential for a pleasant flying experience, it hardly has to mean sacrificing style — and it doesn’t have to mean going completely casual, either. Even professional-looking wardrobe staples like blazers and trousers come in stretchy, breathable, wrinkle-resistant fabrications so you can look work-ready as soon as you get off the plane. And even casual loungewear styles can look polished if you choose a silhouette with intention.

Packing for a business trip can be a challenge, especially if you want to stride right off the plane into a meeting or other professional setting. Your airplane style should be equally put together and comfortable: think stretchy pants that look tailored and an oversized blazer to complete the look without being constricting. Finishing off the look with a sleek tote for utility and style. Everything should be wrinkle-resistant, so you look sharp even if you take an awkward power nap on the plane. For more inspiration, check out our complete business trip packing list , too

Best Blazer

Good american luxe suiting blazer.

There is no single wardrobe item that says “professional” more than a good blazer (which is why I always toss one over my gym shorts for important Zoom calls). The same premise applies to airplane dressing: a blazer pulls together an outfit fast, and looks sharp right off the plane and straight to the boardroom. This one travels well and resists wrinkles in 100 percent polyester, and its oversized, relaxed fit makes it comfy and easy to wear in flight. Choose from four colors, from versatile black to a vibrant reddish orange that says, “I’m ready to seal this deal.”

Best Trouser

Aday turn it up pants moss.

If you plan to hop off the plane and head straight to work — or if you’re flying with colleagues or clients — you can’t wear sloppy sweats on the plane. These editor-loved travel pants are the perfect solution: they’re comfy as can be, never wrinkle, and look super polished despite such ease of wear. The silhouette is chic, with a high-rise waist, and tapered, cigarette-cut legs. They feature front pleats for an extra work-y touch, and hit at the ankles. They’re also machine-washable and quick drying, so they’re genius for wearing on the plane as well as packing for a work trip.

Rothy's The Knot Point II Starfish Pink

Comfortable flats are always a wise choice for the airport and plane, but the right pair can serve the dual purposes of comfort and professional style equally well. This pair — each constructed from about 13 plastic bottles — is ultra comfortable, with serious cushioning, a bit of elastic that expands and contracts, and a spacious toe box to give you room to move. This style updates the classic flat with a cool knot design. It comes in seven colors and a size-inclusive range from 5 to 13. Major bonus: these shoes are machine washable, too.

Dagne Dover Classic Tote Onyx

A great tote is essential for both carrying on an airplane and wearing for all professional (and non-professional) purposes at your destination. Everyone who knows my travel style knows I’m obsessed with Dagne Dover for its thoughtfully curated travel pieces, and this vegan leather tote is a perfect example of why. It’s large enough to carry just about everything you need, including most laptops up to 15 inches in a padded laptop compartment — plus, even a change of clothes and shoes can fit, too. There are pockets and pouches galore for excellent organization, a key leash, and a sturdy zipper to keep everything secure inside.

If you want to wear actual pajamas on a long-haul flight, I won’t judge (though you should know that many other countries have a higher sartorial standard, even for casual clothes). But I recommend opting for a more polished look that’s just as comfy for many hours in the air, even when it’s an overnight flight .

Go for something stretchy and loose fitting, and top with layers so you can stay comfortable no matter the temperature of the cabin air. The holy grail is an outfit that is comfortable but still stylish enough to wear straight into sightseeing if you arrive before your hotel or Airbnb is ready for check-in. A loose-fitting jumpsuit, layered with a T-shirt and cardigan and paired with comfy sneakers, is a winning combo in my book.

Best Travel Jumpsuit

Yesno wide-leg jumpsuit pzztyp2.

I’m a big fan of a jumpsuit for effortless travel dressing. But if you’re going to be wearing one on the plane, you absolutely must pick one that’s easy-on-easy-off for trips to the bathroom, with a breezy silhouette for comfortable movement. This popular jumpsuit fits the bill perfectly, with a loose waist, wide and side-split legs, and a low crotch. The spaghetti straps make it perfect for layering with tees and tanks (both on the plane and at your destination). It also has pockets to stash your airplane essentials, and it’s machine washable, too.

Best T-shirt

Amazon essentials women's classic-fiit t-shirt.

A classic T-shirt is a wardrobe staple for just about every packing purpose. When the weather’s warm, it can be one of the simplest, comfiest solutions for airplane dressing. Wear it as a layering piece under this jumpsuit (or pair it with any other travel-friendly pants). A classic T-shirt should look crisp and fit well — and it should always be clean and stain-free. That’s why I like these budget-priced, basic tees that come in a multipack of two; you’ll always have a backup.

Best Cardigan

Cuyana single-origin long cardigan.

To keep warm and cozy on a long-haul flight, you might be tempted to go all-in on comfort to the detriment of style. But that’s not always necessary, and this cardigan is a great example of an investment piece that’s as appealing to look at as it is to wear for hours upon hours in flight. This single-origin cashmere sweater has a chic and timeless shawl collar, ribbed cuffs, and a long silhouette so it almost feels like you’re wearing a blanket. Front patch pockets keep your essentials — like lip balm and hand sanitizer — close, so there’s no fussing or digging required. The cashmere traces to a single inner Mongolian plateau, and the garment was constructed in the Italian mill of a 150-year-old family-owned Italian business.

Best Sneakers

Hoka clifton 9 running shoe women.

There’s a reason why Hokas are the darlings of the style community — and it’s not because of the style alone. It’s because these shoes are supremely comfortable, engineered with responsive foam for wear throughout the longest haul flight, long treks through maze-like airports, and for exploring city streets at your destination. They’re lightweight, so they’re great for travel, (whether you’re wearing or packing them) with excellent cushioning to absorb impact as you walk. These come in 17 colorways, from versatile white or black to statement-making blue with coral accents.

If only packing for a warm-weathered vacation meant wearing a swimsuit and cover-up straight on the plane. It’s more complicated than that, of course: airplane cabins can be notoriously cold, no matter the temperature outside. So bring layers such as a shawl (which can also be worn to dinner or a dressy occasion at your destination). Dress for the plane in clothing that is breathable and lightweight since the plane could suddenly get warm — especially during boarding or deplaning.

Everlane Crochet Knit Tank Dress

I have this exact dress from fan-favorite brand Everlane’s “vacation” edit and have traveled many miles with it — most recently to Japan, where it carried me stylishly through intense heat and humidity. Made of 100 percent organic cotton, it’s lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and just plain cool-looking. It’s also cool-feeling, too, because of its loose crochet weave. And because it has a slim (but not tight) fit, and a versatile midi length and a scoop neck, it’s as comfy as a tank top to wear on the plane. But it’s a powerhouse at your destination. I also found it washed up easily in the hotel sink after a sweaty day around town, so it’s a breezy, effortless pick for hot-weather travel.

Quince Featherweight Cashmere Silk Frayed Edge Scarf

When it’s hot outside, you might want to board the plane in only minimalist clothing. But you might soon find yourself uncomfortable with bare arms and shoulders when the airplane cabin invariably turns frigid when the air conditioning turns on. Packing a shawl in your carry-on can be the perfect solution to take the chill off your upper body or legs in such conditions. This one is made from cashmere and silk — and it’s light and breezy as can be. It doubles as a great layer for destination occasions like a beach wedding that turns cool in the evening.

Allbirds Women's Tree Runner Go Everyday Sneakers

Sneakers are always a smart footwear option for the airplane, thanks to cushioning, comfort, and coverage that shields your feet from dirty floors. Because breathability is key for warm weather, these popular sneakers make a particularly good airplane pick. They’re made of tree fiber that keeps your feet cool and dry in the heat. They’re well cushioned for major support if you find yourself, say, sprinting through the airport to make a tight connection. Wear them with socks, or not — and you can wear them with just about everything given the versatile design. They’re lightweight, machine washable, and sustainably made, too.

Dressing for a cold-weather trip takes careful planning. Warm clothes tend to be bulky, which takes up substantial space in luggage and overhead bins. Layering or wearing bulky clothing on the plane can help save precious (and pricey) real estate in checked baggage; try layering a sweater over a jacket, and shedding it into the overhead bin as needed. Boots are key for warmth and comfort, but make sure to keep them free from bulky hardware that’s hard to manage as well as a red flag for security screeners.

Best Travel Pants

Spanx airessentials wide-leg pants.

When you hear Spanx, you might sooner think of compression undergarments than comfy airplane wardrobe, but hear me out: these pants have four-way stretch so they move easily, a super-soft fine knit fabrication, and the material is ultralight (for both wearing and packing). The drapey look is flattering and the cut looks polished, not sloppy. These come in five versatile, neutral colors, a size-inclusive range up to 3XL, and options for regular, petite, or tall inseam so you get the perfect fit while your legs stay warm on the plane.

Best Sweater

Quince organic cotton oversized cable sweater.

When it’s cold outside, a sweater is a packing must; but it’s also great to bring for flying at any time of year, as airplane cabins can sometimes turn frigid no matter the climate outside. A button-front cardigan is excellent for layering, both on the plane and at the destination. This 100 percent organic cotton version rings in at an accessible price point. It has faux horn buttons and chunky cable knit detailing for a bit of Ivy League-esque flair. The oversized shape makes it comfy and easy to wear in flight. Plus, the silhouette makes it very on-trend right now.

Best Jacket

Patagonia women's nano puff jacket.

The trouble with packing for cool weather is that all the apparel can be so bulky. Streamline packing and stay cozy by wearing your winter coat on the plane — you’ll only want to do that if the jacket is soft, packable, and lightweight. Patagonia’s puffer is up to the task. It’s made of ripstop nylon, has a water-resistant finish (especially useful if you’ll need to board or deplane outdoors in wet conditions), and packs down right into its own zippered pocket when not in use. You can easily pop it into the seatback pocket in front of you if you get too warm in flight.

Ugg Classic Mini II

People (including me) love to hate Ugg boots for their house slipper-esque look and the cultish hype around the signature styles. Still, there’s no denying that these are some of the most comfortable boots out there, and supercozy with shearling lining. They really are a perfect airplane footwear option for cold weather, as they slip on and off easily — no laces or zippers required. This version is tall enough to keep your ankles warm, but short enough to tuck away easily under a seat. And there’s no metal hardware to set off a metal detector at security. FYI: they come in whole sizes only and are cut generously, so order a size down if you’re between sizes.

Beyond wearing traditional pajamas, there are ways to look put together while staying equally as comfy for many hours on a plane. Go with a matching set , which comes effortlessly coordinated and makes for versatile separates at your destination. Opt for clothes that resist wrinkles, and silhouettes that cheat a dressier look while staying comfy as PJs ( look for elastic-waist pants with stretch and a tapered cut.) And opt for versatile, neutral, and solid colors for a polished look.

Because you can't expect airplane floors to be clean, you should always wear closed-toed shoes that shield your feet from dirty surfaces. Avoid fussy buckles and other hardware, which can be both a pain to take on and off, as well as excess metal that can flag the security screeners. No matter the style, prioritize comfortable shoes for long — sometimes hurried — treks through airports.

What you don’t wear on a plane is as important as what you do wear. For your comfort, don’t wear anything too tight or constricting. Avoid sandals, which lack both support and warmth — and also fail to keep your feet protected from dirty surfaces. Out of respect for other passengers, avoid wearing excessive perfume or other body products, and leave those T-shirts with offensive slogans at home.

Former Traveler editor Corina Quinn turned us on to Vuori's DreamKnit Collection hoodie and jogger set. “The DreamKnit feels like a cloud—it's so soft and cozy, yet lightweight, so you don't get too hot or too cool in them,” she says. “On top of that, because there are a few different models of jogger pants and tops, my friends and I have all found a model that's flattering for us.” For a pair of sweats that make you feel like you’re wearing a real outfit without actually doing so, Vuori’s unbelievably soft, stretchy sets are an easy pick.

Friend + Folk is a size- and gender-inclusive brand that prioritizes a limited carbon footprint, and puts it into practice by way of free carbon neutral shipping, recyclable and plastic-free packaging, limited batch-production, and more. The Joon joggers are a favorite—the fit is roomy and comfortable yet still tailored, and the zippered pockets are ideal for stashing AirPods, lip balm, and other odds and ends without worrying they'll fall out as you dash through the airport. Pair them with the Perry pullover and you've got a new airport uniform.

Lululemon may be best known for its leggings and workout wear, but don't skip over the brand's loungewear. This set is made out of a smooth Softstreme material that is stretchy and feels smooth against your skin. It's a great loungewear set to wear if you run hot.

We love this Madewell number, made of a fleece-like Superbrushed terry fabric. Wide legs and a loose fit make it just the kind of thing we want to wear on long travel days, and the patch pockets are much appreciated. Since it does have tank top-style straps, bring a cardigan or other added layer for the plane.

Some loungewear is better suited for inside wear, like this cozy ribbed shorts set. Wear the pullover, with its bell sleeves and slit in the back, over leggings for long-haul flights. The stretchy shorts have a fairly short inseam, so they'll likely be more comfortable as a sleeping short or loungewear piece to change into when you arrive at your hotel or rental house.

Image may contain: Clothing, Suit, Overcoat, Apparel, Coat, Human, and Person

This two-piece set might be the closest thing to sleepwear on this list, and yet is still cute enough to feel confident while wearing through the airport. It comes in a dozen colors, from basic heather gray to bold indigo blue, and pairs slouchy, relaxed fit pants with a scoop-neck button-up henley.

Image may contain: Clothing, Sleeve, Apparel, Long Sleeve, Human, Person, Standing, and Pants

Sure, all sweatpants are designed to be comfortable, but the cotton, modal, and spandex fabric Knix uses takes things up a notch. The smooth, cooling, and slightly stretchy fabric feels fantastic against skin and looks a bit more put-together than typical sweatpant material.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Dress, Human, Person, and Pants

Most loungewear tends to follow the same cut, so we appreciate Monos, a luggage brand , shaking things up when delving into clothing. This set is as soft as any sweatpants out there, with a mid-length wide-leg pant and a short sleeve V-neck tee that's just slightly cropped.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, and Pants

Anything labeled Signaturesoft nails both the rest day and flying-comfortably mood we're going for. The top and bottom have a streamlined shape and the sweatpants are tapered at the ankle. Both pieces are made of a comfortable rayon, acrylic, and spandex mix, so you’ll feel cozy while still looking put together. The sweatshirt and sweatpants can be purchased individually and come in nearly a dozen colors should you want to mix and match, and the sweatshirt passes the video-conferencing-chic test, in that it looks more like a standard sweater than workout wear.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Pajamas, Human, and Person

Not a hoodie person? You might like this cowl-neck top, which comes with cropped pants, both made of a super soft jersey and spandex fabric. Shop the set in gray, sky blue, strawberry, or buttercream, and wear it on your next overnight flight to feel like you're in pajamas.

Image may contain: Clothing, Apparel, Footwear, Shoe, Human, Person, Suit, Coat, Overcoat, Sleeve, and Long Sleeve

You may never want to put on pajamas again after wearing Softwear's Lounge Set. The fabric is buttery soft inside and out. Both the pullover and joggers are tailored and fitted with a clean silhouette—the top could pass for a normal sweater—while still being ultra soft. Plus, it’s long-lasting: The sustainable fabric is pilling-resistant and made to keep its shape after every wear.

What To Wear On A Long Haul Flight (Your Stylish Inflight Packing List)

What to wear on a long haul flight is part art, part science. The art is the emotional bit that makes you grab things you love, and the science part is packing what fits!

I’m writing this fresh as I get off a 12-hour flight from Asia, while I still remember what I wish I’d had and what I know I’ll never use.

And 12 hours is nothing.

Because these days, you could spend upward of 16 hours on a single flight.  Qatar Airways will fly you from Doha to Auckland in 16 hours and 23 minutes. If that’s too short, United Airlines will whisk you from Houston to Sydney in 17.5 hours. And Sydney-New York is now being tested: when that comes online, you’ll be in the air for an interminable 20 hours. That’s almost a full day, sleep included.

British Airways 747 preparing for a long-haul flight

Other than a chance upgrade to Business Class, the only hope of relaxation you have is wearing comfortable clothes and having your in-flight necessities within reach.

And here’s another thought: What if your flight gets delayed? Cancelled? What if your flight is transiting through another destination and you have to stay longer than planned?

Like the Scouts’ motto, Be Prepared!

WHAT TO WEAR ON A LONG HAUL FLIGHT: HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST TRAVEL OUTFITS

Putting together the perfect long haul flight outfit.

Before we look at concrete recommendations ( click here  if you want to jump to the comparison chart and shop right away), here are some  guidelines to help you pack  for a flight that will last the better part of a day.

1. Your travel clothes should be comfortable

That should go without saying!

But… what’s that I spy sashaying down the aisle? A tight-fitting blouse with popping buttons, a snug wide belt and non-stretch jeans?

Enjoy, because I wouldn’t. I need things that flow, that breathe and that stretch.

Think about it: a long flight is like waking up in the morning, sitting down ALL DAY, then going to bed. It’s that long.

And what if your flight is delayed? You could be stuck in the airport for extra hours before take-off, or in transit – with no access to your luggage and clean clothes.

2. Your inflight wardrobe should be light and easy to carry

Given that you’ll be wearing rather than packing these clothes, make sure they’re lightweight so you can crumple and fold them if you take off a layer, put them to the side or stuff them in your bag. Better plenty of lightweight items than one heavy one.

There’s an exception: if you’re going somewhere you need heavy clothing, such as a parka for winter in Canada or a major hike that requires heavy boots. In that case, by all means wear them on the plane (unless baggage weight is not an issue for you).

3. Consider wearing layers

This is one of the more important tips I can share with you because inflight temperature will not stay stable – anywhere:

  • There can be  many degrees of difference  between the airport, the access corridors and the plane. Your teeth could be chattering one minute and you could be covered in sweat the next.
  • Temperatures inside the plane change : notice how you’re sweltering while you’re waiting for takeoff, but freezing in the middle of the night?
  • If you’re headed to destinations with  wildly differing climates  – Australia in winter to Southeast Asia, for example, or northern Europe to southern Spain – you’ll be grateful to have things to take off (or put on).

Whatever the circumstance, you need to be able to regulate your own temperature and layers are the easiest way to do this.

4. Avoid bulk or sharp things – as in jewelry, buttons or metal

Metal and chains can actually be dangerous: they can cut flesh, and get caught in such things as trays, armrests or passing trolleys.  Space is so confined you can scratch someone with a fancy metal button just by turning around, or get it caught in something.

5. There’s no reason you shouldn’t wear chic travel clothes

I try to be chic when I travel – as long as the chic doesn’t override the comfort.

Linen is chic, and some of the newer stretch materials look natural and classy.

But that’s up to you. If I’m being met on arrival or have meetings as soon as I land (ugh, it happens), then I’d like to make a good first impression. If I’m on my own (the most frequent scenario) I’ll happily be more casual.

You can also improve your chic quotient with a few well-chosen accessories or a bit of makeup before landing.

6. Stick to neutral or patterned colors

If you’ve ever worn white on a long trip, you’ll know why I say this. Two or even three meals on a bumpy flight probably mean a small spill or two, some crumbs, perhaps a little smear.

Wear a pale color and you’ll be showing off those splashes.

Patterns or neutral shades, on the other hand, have a better chance of hiding those unfortunate accidents.

7. Choose your material carefully

This is hugely personal. Most people recommend against linen, because it wrinkles. But – it’s  supposed  to wrinkle so to me, that doesn’t look bad at all. Linen breathes well and seems to adapt to my body temperature.

Whatever you choose, it’s key to wear a material that breathes. It’s dry up there in the sky and you don’t want something that clings and makes you sweat.

There’s also a security issue. Should a fire break out, synthetics can be dangerous, both for the way they melt and for the fumes they could emit.

8. Make sure your feet are protected

There are two reasons for this: safety, and hygiene.

Safety first: A plane has many surfaces and corners just waiting to bump into you, and breaking a toe is not fun (I speak from experience). Not only that but a trolley can damage those toes severely, and if there’s a (God forbid) emergency, you’ll want to be able to move around solidly and safely.

The other issue is hygiene. Airplanes are among the dirtiest environments around, and bathrooms even more so. You’ll want something robust on your feet if you’re wandering into the toilet…

The packing list: comfy travel clothes for your flight

Now that we have some clarity about  how  to choose the best travel clothes for long flights (plus other inflight necessities), here are some recommendations for fashionable travel clothes.

Your main long flight outfit

Remember all that talk about layering? Here’s where it all comes together.

Let’s start with the tops.

You really need three layers:

  • a very light top as a first layer (I’m not counting your  travel bra  as a layer, by the way!)
  • a light, airy short- or long-sleeved top, or oversized T-shirt or man’s shirt, or long-ish cardigan or jacket as a second layer
  • a shawl or pashmina to throw over it all

Then the bottoms.

This would be a single layer and I would choose between stretch pants (elastic waistbands are nice for flying) and other  comfortable travel pants . You could also wear a dress or  a travel skirt  but I find these less comfortable for long hauls, especially if you’re stuck at the airport for any length of time. Whatever you choose has to be super comfortable because you’re going to be sitting for hours so some level of stretch is a must. And remember, too-tight pants can increase the risk of DVT, or deep vein thrombosis.

Do you suffer from jet lag when you fly long distances? If so,  this article may help !

The following are some recommendations and items I like. Just make sure that style-wise, these items fit with the rest of the wardrobe you’re taking with you.

Whatever you decide to wear, make sure it is comfortable. You never know how long you may be in the same clothes!

Pampering your feet

The issue of comfy travel shoes emerges each time air travel is discussed.

In my opinion, the best thing to wear on a plane are low-heeled slip-on comfortable shoes. They’re easy to remove at security or in an emergency, and you can slide them on and off quickly to go to the bathroom. ( I use Sketchers  and have several pairs.)

A few things to keep in mind when choosing the best shoes for flying:

  • Wear shoes that are  a bit roomy . Your feet tend to swell in a plane and if your shoes are tight-fitting, you may have trouble putting them back on after a long flight.
  • Get a  breathable material . I know some of you will swear by leather but unless it is the softest, most malleable of Italian skins, I would go for something that is made for breathing.
  • Wear  close-toed shoes  rather than sandals, because planes are full of metallic corners and sharp edges, not to mention getting to and from the airport and walking around uneven cobblestones at your destination.
  • Consider wearing  compression socks  to help fight swelling in flight and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
  • Finally, whatever you do, please  protect your feet from the dirt  on the plane. The floor is  dirty and the bathroom will most certainly be so after a few uses. Do NOT walk around barefoot, ever, and don’t wear socks or absorbent slippers – put your shoes back on!

WHAT TO PACK FOR A LONG FLIGHT – TRAVEL GEAR AND AIRPLANE ESSENTIALS

Clothes are all well and good, but there’s a lot more that goes into that packing list for your long flight travel essentials.

Don’t lose sight of your papers

I admit it’s never happened to me but I have heard stories of people rifling through belongings in the overhead bins while everyone is asleep. Urban legend? Perhaps. But do I want to take a chance? No I don’t.

So I keep my important papers with me on the plane: I alternate between a cross-body travel purse that I keep on me throughout the flight, a  money belt  that stays invisible under my clothes or an  infinity scarf  that also keeps me warm.

Long haul flight essentials: best travel accessories for long flights

We all have our preferences but here’s what I would take on the plane:

  • Glasses or contact lenses and whatever you need to read or watch movies
  • Reading material or other entertainment if you don’t like watching the small screen (cards, sudoku, you name it!)
  • Any medication you need inflight or for the first few days after you land (in case your luggage gets lost), as well as standard meds for the flight (paracetamol for headaches, throat lozenges, antacids etc)
  • A pen (for those boarding cards) and a small notebook (in case you get an irresistible idea for your next novel)
  • A note with your passport number, flight number, hotel address and other pertinent information (so you won’t have to fumble through your papers when it’s time to fill out that boarding card)
  • A travel pillow if you’d like to bring your own
  • A  travel blanket  or pashmina to stay warm (and to roll up as a pillow if needed)
  • Healthy snacks, in case you wake up hungry in the middle of the night
  • Eye mask and earplugs if you use or need these
  • A pair of clean underwear, panty pads and hygienic towelettes or wet wipes
  • A small toothbrush and toothpaste
  • A comb or hairbrush
  • Face cleansing towelettes, moisturizer, lip balm
  • Small bottle of hand sanitizer or tea tree oil (for your hands but also to clean your tray)
  • Headphones (I’ve started using these little  ear pods ) or noise-cancellation headphones if you want to block it all out
  • Battery charger for when your phone runs out of juice

INFLIGHT FASHION ETIQUETTE: WHAT NOT TO WEAR ON THE PLANE

There’s a lot of conflicting information out there about what to wear on a long haul flight – and what not to wear. We all have our opinions – here’s mine, based on more than half a century of spending a lot of time cooped up in the air.

The thorny question: can you wear flip flops on a plane?

You CAN – but you shouldn’t. You could easily cut a foot on some of the metallic edges and in case of an emergency, you want to make sure your feet are protected. So the answer is No, unless you stick them in your bag and use them to go to the bathroom, and even then.

And another: can you wear hats on a plane?

There’s no reason why not – other than your own comfort. You can wear your hat onto the plane but if you’re on a long-haul flight, you’re not going to want to keep it on if you have any hope of being comfortable.

Can I wear pyjamas on a long flight?

Technically yes – but why on earth would you want to look like you’re just getting out of bed? I certainly don’t enjoy looking at passengers who think so little of themselves they can’t be bothered to get dressed to go out, let alone to travel. You can find plenty of comfortable clothes you can sleep in without looking like you should have stayed home.

The issue of perfumes and scent

What may smell nice to you may turn a flight into a nightmare for your row-mate. Some people are extremely sensitive to smells and being subjected to perfume for the equivalent of half a day is unkind at best, or downright dangerous if someone has an allergy or asthma.

Speaking of smells, remember that the recycled air and closed-in space of an airplane can intensify odors so a rumpled outfit that seems all right after a quick sniff may be close to overpowering by the end of the flight. If you can, save a clean outfit for your flight – you wouldn’t wear dirty clothes for a day of sightseeing so why would you wear them for a day of flying?

Use these tips to make your long-haul flight bearable. No one enjoys spending a dozen hours cooped up in the sky but there are ways to make that time pass a little more comfortably and enjoyably. Have a great flight!

5 Must-Have Items To Include In Your Travel Outfits For Long Flights

Travel Outfits For Long Flights

In this article, Julie Buckingham gives away her favorite tips for building the best travel outfits for long flights. The key to surviving a long plane ride doesn’t involve an aisle seat or in-flight movie, it’s about staying comfortable.

Travel Outfits For Long Flights

I dread long flights. In fact, I try not to travel anywhere for a short period of time if the destination requires a long flight. I would much rather find a way to stay an extra week on my trip or vacation if it includes an eight-hour flight or longer. The reward of course, is an amazing adventure, sandy white beach or visiting a culture in a city you’ve never been to before. Despite our discomfort, it’s worth the time stuck in a seat in the sky.

However, your mood could easily change if you were uncomfortable. Travel outfits for long flights are not just fashionable, their practical and even essential for an extended period of time on a flight. The fabrics you wear, the shoes on your feet are all important decisions in making your long flight tolerable.

In this article, I talk about 5 items to include in your Travel Outfits For Long Flights along with some items of clothing that you should avoid.

1. Premium Socks

There is a massive number of people in the world who have never put on a pair of high-end compression socks. If you’re one of those people… I’m telling you, you’re missing out. We always think about comfy shoes as apart of our travel outfits for long flights, but that’s silly. What’s the first thing you do a few hours into a long flight? You slip off your shoes. While comfy shoes are important as you will be spending a lot of time in the airport and walking throughout your trip, premium socks are the secret weapon.

Stance Socks for Men and Women

Compression Socks by Stance

I first heard about Stance after seeing a video done by HypeBeast about the company’s amazing work environment. Many pro athletes, musicians, and even artists are endorsing their products, and after trying on a pair myself, I can see why. These socks are hard to describe, they simply make you rethink what’s in your sock drawer.

Most people buy socks at Costco or Walmart in a big plastic bag by the dozen. They wear out, holes appear and you throw them in the garbage. If you spent just a little more you could completely improve the comfort of your feet and get more longevity out of your purchase.

I have found many of Stance’s socks available at Amazon , which is my recommendation as it includes free shipping. These socks would be perfect for your long flight and I highly recommend them. Stance has different sizes, shapes, and designs, all ranging in price, but I’m confident you should be able to find a pair that’ll make your travel outfit for a long flight.

2. Comfy Pants (Stretchy Jeans, Activewear etc)

You don’t want anything too constrictive. The stretchier, the comfier the pants you can find, the better.  I understand you’re excited about your trip and want to plan out all your outfits, but do yourself a favor and relax on travel days. Like I said in the intro, you’re spending hours in a chair in the sky. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing, as long as you’re comfortable. Stretchy jeans are my go-to, but if you have a pair of something else that fits you great, go for it.

Avoid:  Skirts and Dresses. Remember you’re sitting in a seat for a long time. A dress is not the way to go.

3. Quality Hoodie

You need to dress in layers. It can get cold on a plane and you need to be able to bundle up without having to ask for a blanket. Add a high-quality comfy hoodie to your travel outfits for long flights list. I like to pick one with a zipper down the middle to easily put it on while being cramped in my window seat. Hoodies come in all shapes and sizes but the softness is a great sign of quality. You want a thin fitted, warm hoodie on your flight. I have picked out a few that I could recommend below.

Travel Outfits For Long Flights

4. Running Shoes

They say you should replace your running shoes every six months, but I have a hard time throwing things away. Usually, what I’ll do is downgrade a pair of running shoes to my travel wear. Or what I have done in the past is bought a new pair of running shoes for the gym just specifically to downgrade a pair – lol.

In all fairness, the way their making running shoes nowadays, it takes little time at all to break them in. I recently bought the pair of New Balance running shoes and I love them.

Some recommend sandals as apart of your travel outfits for long flights, but for me, I want to be able to run at a moments notice if I’m late and have to catch a flight. I also don’t want people stepping on my toes when we deboard the plane or if I have to use the airplane bathroom which isn’t always clean.

If you do plan to buy a nice new pair of shoes for your trip or vacation, make sure you spend a day or two wearing them around before your trip. It doesn’t long to break them in, but you should put in a few hours beforehand.

Travel Outfits For Long Flights

5. Travel Neck Pillow

This item technically doesn’t work with my travel outfits for long flights list, however, I’ve dubbed it my scarf for the sky.

There’s something about a plane engine that just puts me to sleep. The whole take-off process usually starts my flight off with me trying to keep my eyes open. A great neck pillow along with a comfy outfit and I’ll be asleep before the plane reaches its ideal altitude.

I did an article on the best kids travel neck pillow earlier this year. It was a BCOZZY review , and in the article I talked about how this neck pillow is not just for kids, as I have one and use it all the time.

The BCOZZY neck pillow is a perfect blend of being flexible and lightweight. You’ll be getting the much-needed comfort even in sitting positions that seem awkward. The filling is quite durable and it doesn’t lose its elasticity or flexibility even after long periods of use. Although my child complained of some discomfort that comes with wrapping the support around his throat, he felt very comfortable with it as soon as I loosened the strap.

Available at Amazon

Thanks for reading and enjoy that long plane ride, hopefully, there is someone or somewhere nice waiting for you on the other site.

THE BEST TRAVEL OUTFIT FOR LONG FLIGHTS

THE BEST TRAVEL OUTFIT FOR LONG FLIGHTS | I am sharing a long haul flight outfit idea, including a lightweight tee, a cozy cardigan, the best travel leggings and no fuss slip-on sneakers - casual, comfy airport, car

Do you ever wonder, what is the best travel outfit for long flights? Well, I wrote this post 30,000 feet up in the air on a 7+ hour flight, heading to Arizona for a soccer tournament and a little Spring Break fun. I shared my outfit on Instagram and had a few questions, so I am sharing everything with you here today, including some of my best tips for traveling. For me, the key to what you should wear when you travel, is comfort and practicality. If I can find pieces that fit the criteria and are also cute, they are total winners in my book.

The Best Travel Outfit for Long Flights

COMFORT IS KEY

As I mentioned, comfort is key for me.  I am always cold and like to feel warm and snuggly. It enhances the whole experience for me. I  have it pretty much nailed down how to assemble the perfect travel outfit for long flights.  It always consists of my Spanx leggings, a cute tee, and a cozy cardigan.  I always wear my slip-on sneakers with footie socks, so I can take off my shoes easily and my feet don’t have to touch the gross airport floor.  I rotate between different cardigans and leggings, but I  always follow the same formula,  Even if it is 100 degrees outside. In my experience airports and planes are always cold, so a cozy cardigan is key for me.  I also always have a big, soft scarf in my carry-on, that can easily double as a pillow or a blanket, and yes, a pair of bed socks. Okay, call me granny.

SHOP THIS POST:

CHOOSE PRACTICAL PIECES & LAYER

On this trip, I chose my favorite Spanx coated leggings . Honestly, they really are the best travel pants for long flights. They suck you in, in all the right places and are still very comfortable, and the coated part makes them so versatile and more polished looking. Stains seem to repel right off of them (key when traveling with kids) and they are refined enough to wear with dressier pieces and booties throughout the trip.  They were a definite staple in my travel wardrobe this trip. I like to layer my clothes so I have some flexibility with warmth. My typical layered look is a t-shirt, cardigan, and scarf over black leggings.

TEE / LEGGINGS

I love this t-shirt.  The cute knit faux knot detail makes it look a bit more pulled together bunch and makes it look like you have the casual tuck mastered. 😉  Btw, when wearing leggings your bum, should always be covered unless you are 12 and under.

I rotate cardigans, but I love my barefoot dream cardigan . It is like a warm, soft hug and makes the perfect travel companion.  It also makes the most perfect gift.  My other favorite is this Long Sweater Blazer with pockets I snagged at J.Crew.  It adds the perfect layer of warmth and comfort on long flights, especially evening, or overnight flights, and looks more polished.

LEGGINGS / SHOES

These slip-on sneakers have gotten so much wear and have served me well these past few years.  I take them on every single trip and they are so comfy. They double as my regular sneakers on trips as well.  I can walk miles in them and I love that I can take them off easily and slip them right back on. These footie socks are the only ones that I have found that don’t slip off my heels and disappear in most shoes.  They are made from breathable cotton and save me from yucky airport floors.

BE PREPARED

Psst, I also always carry a clean t-shirt, toothbrush, and an extra pair of undies in my carry-on as well.  That way, if god forbid, our luggage gets lost, I can make it a day without feeling super gross.

Love your travel outfit ideas! I need to grab a pair of faux leather leggings!

Thank you! And, yes you do. You will not regret it.

Thank you so much for stating that “always, always, cover your bum when you wear leggings unless you are 12 and under”. I’ve seen so many women who look like they are wearing pantyhose when they wear leggings. Far too much being exposed! The real test is “ladies, how do you look FROM THE BACK?” Most of us look OK from the front view, but I saw a woman one day whose silhouette was really lumpy. Not pretty.

You are hilarious!

Looking Elegant at the Airport Is Possible—6 Outfits Perfect for Autumn Flying

I have to be honest—of all the outfits I may plan, airport looks are at the absolute bottom of the list. Typically, my thinking about what I'll wear on a plane is limited to having to wear last-minute "just in case" pieces that I can't squeeze into my suitcase, or just going for whatever I grab the morning of the flight. But over the past few years, I've noticed more and more of my fellow passengers strolling around the airport in outfits that truly put mine to shame. Turns out, stained sweatpants and crumpled t-shirts are no longer considered travel-appropriate.

And has anyone else spotted more and more influencers posting seriously chic airport looks? And I'm not just talking about the ones jumping on a private jet. Our favourite tastemakers have truly nailed the elevated casual look, combining comfort and style with effortless finesse. I must replicate.

@lucywilliams02 wearing jeans and a leather jacket, holding luggage

Luckily, you probably already own a lot of the pieces needed to create an upgraded airport look . Elevated athleisure paired with tailored separates is a common formula that influencers like Aimee Song and Lucy Williams follow. But if you are looking to add some new additions, high street favourites as well as high end labels more than have you covered.

So, if you're joining me in the journey to dress like a First Class passenger (even if you're sticking to Economy,) scroll on for some runway-ready looks to inspire you.

1. Tonal Sweats + Blazer

@aimeesong wearing brown sweats and a camel blazer

Style Notes: Creating an elevated airport look doesn't mean sacrificing comfort. As Aimee proves, sweats are still a great go-to for wearing on a plane, just opt for high-quality pieces in a rich tone, and top it off with an oversized blazer in a matching hue for a polished finish.

Shop the look:

Gabriella Doublesoft™️ Sweatshirt

Cosy perfection.

Nike Solo Swoosh Women's Fleece Trousers

An ideal match.

Aiden Twill Blazer

I love how Aimee uses a lighter blazer to elevate the look.

Samba Og Suede-Trimmed Leather and Nylon Sneakers

The ultimate finishing touch.

Coterie Chain Necklace

Accessories are key to making an airport outfit look extra considered.

Oversized Cat-Eye Acetate Sunglasses

To guard against the paparazzi.

2. Hoodie + Blazer + Jeans

@_livmadeline wearing a hoodie with blazer and jeans

Style Notes: Personally, I'm all for wearing jeans on a plane—especially if you're going to need them in your final destination, or heading straight out once you land. Styling them with a hoodie and a blazer keeps it more than travel-appropriate, but still undeniably cool.

Phoenix Oversized Embroidered Cotton-Blend Jersey Hoodie

Everyone needs a comfy hoodie.

Oversized Blazer

I'm such a fan of & Other Stories' tailoring this season.

The Original Curvy Cheeky® Jean

Such a gorgeous fit.

New Balance 610 Sneakers

Running trainers are ideal for powering through the airport.

Cat Eye Sunglasses

3. Matching Sweats + Cropped T-Shirt

@isabellecoheen wearing blue sweats

Style Notes: For long haul flights when comfort is the top, top priority, sweats are a must. Keep yours looking fashion-forward by opting for a matching set in a cool colour, and a cropped t-shirt.

Muse Hoodie - Navy

I love Alo Yoga's sweats.

Muse Sweatpant - Navy

Such a cool set.

The ’90s Rib Tee

To complete the cropped look.

+ Sporty & Rich Olympic Samba Og Satin and Suede-Trimmed Leather Sneakers

The kind of trainer you'll be happy to wear on the plane, and to have on hand in your travel wardrobe.

Leather Crossbody Bag

Just enough space for all your essentials.

4. Leggings + Ballet Flats + Crossbody Bag

@annabelrosendahl wearing leggings and ballet flats and a coat

Style Notes: Over the last few months, influencers have been reminding us of the fashion kudos of leggings. And what better time to wear them than on a plane. Ultra-comfortable, leggings are made for layering, so you can adapt the look to whatever climate you're in, and however intense the AC in the airplane may be.

Ultimate Leggings - Black

Adanola leggings are so flattering.

Clean Cut T-Shirt

The t-shirt our editors swear by.

Single-Breasted Coat

The ultimate travel coat.

Striped Silk Crepe De Chine Scarf

A silk scarf is such a chic way to elevate a travel ensemble.

Bethany Ballet Flat

Cozy, Cute Airport Outfit Ideas to Keep in Mind for Your Next Trip

Because vacation dressing starts way before you make it to your destination.

Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.

Most recently, Emily Ratajkowski showed us how to master the art of chic comfort, with cuddly soft shorts and trendy Miu Miu boots. Of course, if you’re not a fan of wearing leg-baring shorts at the airport; having a high-quality pair of sweatpants (sorry, those threadbare ones you’re holding on to from college have to go) will be a smart investment, and brands like Leset or SPRWMN don’t skimp on quality. Plus, the laidback trousers can easily be upgraded with a smart cardigan or a timeless white T-shirt.

The fun doesn’t stop there. Go all out with a special luxury tote bag or a head-turning carry-on . Kaia Gerber is a fan of the Celine Triomphe duffle while Shay Mitchell, of course, carries a graphic bag from her very own Béis collection.

Take notes and prepare to be best dressed by browsing our favorite airport outfit ideas below.

Do You Really Need to Wear Compression Socks on a Long Flight?

travel outfits for long flights

  • On TikTok, users tout the benefits of wearing compression socks while flying and urge others to wear them on long-haul flights, too.
  • Compression socks can help reduce swelling and the risk of developing blood clots.
  • The socks pose little health risks and can be useful to wear on long flights regardless of age, experts said.

Preparation is essential if you want to stay comfortable on a long-haul flight, and many TikTokers recommend adding one thing in particular to your preflight to-do list: putting on compression socks.

Compression socks, also known as compression stockings, are often associated with aging because they help with circulation, which can worsen over time. But a recent TikTok trend has people flaunting their compression socks and urging others to don them on long flights as well—regardless of age or health status.

“I travel a lot,” said one creator, whose video has received over 220,000 views, “and one of my biggest tips I can give you guys—no matter what class you’re traveling in—it’s always important to wear these compression socks.”

But can wearing compression socks on long flights really offer health benefits for everyone? Here’s what you need to know about these socks, including who should consider wearing them while flying.

nito100 / Getty Images

What Are Compression Socks and How Do They Work?

Compression socks are tighter-fitting socks designed to increase blood flow and prevent blood clots by gently squeezing the calves and feet, stimulating circulation.

The mild pressure from compression socks “squeezes fluid from the feet and lower legs back towards the center of the body,” David Steensma, MD , a hematologist and chief medical officer at Ajax Therapeutics, told Health . “This squeezing reduces swelling of the feet, ankles, and lower legs.”

Most compression socks are made of elastic fabric, and they stretch to the calf, thigh, or waist. They come in varying tension levels, ranging from low—less than 20 millimeters of mercury (mmHg)—to high, exceeding 30 mmHg.

You can buy socks with relatively low compression levels over the counter, while higher levels may require a prescription.

What’s the Connection Between Compression Socks and Flying?

Doctors sometimes recommend compression socks for flights because they can stimulate blood flow. Sitting for long periods, like on an overnight flight, can take a toll on circulation.

“During a flight, blood flow can become sluggish in the veins, pooling in the lower legs,” Leo Reap, DO , a hematologist at Ascension Michigan, told Health . “This increases the chance of a clot, particularly when the flight is over four hours.”

Blood clots in the veins can cause deep vein thrombosis (DVT ), leading to complications over time.

“Clots can injure the veins and cause the veins to dilate, including formation of varicose veins,” Steensma said. “The veins may be permanently impaired in returning blood to the center of the body, causing long-term swelling.”

The risk of a blood clot is “relatively proportional” to the duration of the flight, according to Reap. It’s “highest on transoceanic flights, where people tend not to move for prolonged periods.”

Who Should Wear Compression Socks While Flying?

The American Society of Hematology recommends compression socks for people flying for at least four hours who are at high risk of developing a blood clot. That includes those who:

  • Recently underwent surgery
  • Have a prior history of venous blood clots
  • Recently had a baby
  • Have an active malignancy

However, Reap said compression socks can be helpful for anyone, regardless of age and medical history.

“They’re useful on any flight to decrease lower extremity swelling or discomfort,” he said. “They can improve comfort while flying and are reasonable for anyone to use during prolonged travel of longer than four hours.”

Wearing compression socks doesn’t pose any major risks “aside from potential slight discomfort if too tight of stockings are used,” Reap added. However, Steensma said that they may also cause slight irritation of the skin or minor bruising.

What to Know Before Buying Compression Socks

It’s important to find socks with a compression strength appropriate for your circumstances, Steensma said. Consult your doctor to determine the proper compression strength for your risk level.

“Those in highest risk groups with previous clots and chronic swelling may need as much as 40–50 mm Hg,” according to Steensma. “If you’re in a high-risk group for blood clots, you may be able to get a prescription for compression socks, and insurance may cover part of the cost.”

All compression socks should have a snug fit to provide firm pressure but not be painfully tight. It’s “important to avoid bunching or rolling them up,” Steensma explained. “They should fit smoothly along the foot and leg.”

Many socks feature graduation compression, cushioning, breathable materials and other features that improve comfort.

Other Strategies to Prevent Blood Clots While Flying

Compression socks can reduce the likelihood of swelling and blood clots, but wearing them doesn’t guarantee that you won’t develop blood clots while flying.

“The benefit of compression stockings is limited, so even if you wear them, clots can happen,” Steensma warned.

That’s why experts recommend taking additional steps to increase blood flow while traveling.

The CDC recommends passengers walk around the plane every two to three hours to prevent blood clots, while Reap suggests hourly treks up and down the aisle. It’s also a good idea to boost circulation by staying hydrated, he said, and to perform calf exercises on a regular basis while in your seat.

Khanty-Mansiysk: Why you simply must visit this northern land of mammoths

travel outfits for long flights

“I have been to Yugra many times. I was sworn in as a Siberian in a cedar forest,” producer Andrey Suleikov writes in the preface to a collection of legends called Yugra. It’s My Land . “I tasted lingonberries in the cold and could not tell whether the berries were coated in sugar or ice. I also enjoyed outdoor hot springs while taking a traditional Siberian bath."

Fuel pumping stations

Fuel pumping stations

Sounds more like time travel than a present-day tourist trip, doesn’t it? But that is what Yugra is like: a fusion between prehistoric things like mammoths and modernity, which has brought oil, gas and new buildings. Even the region’s official name (which is quite long: the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area – Yugra) combines the present with the past.

Tying a ribbon is a national tradition

Tying a ribbon is a national tradition

There is a beautiful legend about Yugra’s origins. In one very bright, warm and sunny city, twins of unprecedented beauty were born: a brother named Yug and a sister named Ra. At first, they grew up like ordinary small children, but with age they began to argue and fight, so much so that when they did flames flared up around them. The townspeople were afraid that they would burn everything down, so they exiled Yug and Ra to a remote northern land covered with ice and snow. The brother and sister illuminated this land with their light and made it warm so that people could come here to live. Yug and Ra stopped fighting and began living together in harmony. Since then, this northern land has been called Yugra.

When you look at the map, it may seem that Khanty-Mansiysk is located almost in the middle of Russia. However, the climate here is similar to regions of the Far North. In winter, the temperature here drops to below -40 degrees Celsius.

We asked local residents and people who know this region well to tell us more about it and to share some tips for tourists who come to visit.

Why should a foreigner visit Khanty-Mansiysk?

“If you want to feel the coldness and colors of Russian winter, then you should definitely stop by in our small cozy town,” says a local tattoo artist, Semyon Chepurnoy.

A Khanty man in a traditional dress

A Khanty man in a traditional dress

Yevgeny Zinovyev, a journalist and the former editor-in-chief of a local media outlet, says that Khanty-Mansiysk provides the opportunity to experience a real and not touristy part of Russia. “In winter, there are frosts, snowdrifts and wind. In summer, heat, midges and bears. At any time of the year, you can experience the everyday life and customs of the indigenous peoples: the Khanty and Mansi. And of course, in Khanty-Mansiysk you can get to know the backbone of modern Russia – its oil and gas sector."

“We have unique scenery here. Khanty-Mansiysk is located on seven hills and is surrounded by the taiga. There are a lot of fish in the rivers, and a lot of mushrooms, berries and pine nuts in the forests surrounding the city,” says local insurance company employee Sergey Yankovich.

The harsh climate of the region influences how local residents relate to visitors. “Residents of the city are very good-natured and welcoming and are always ready to offer help in any situation, even to a stranger, because in the north, there is an unspoken rule: If you see that a person is in distress, be sure to help them, because tomorrow, it may be you in their place. The harsh climate and surrounding scenery leave no room for error, especially in winter,” Sergey says.

Things to see/do/taste in Khanty-Mansiysk

Mammoths at the Archeopark

Mammoths at the Archeopark

According to Irina Pudova, a local resident and the author of a collection of legends called Yugra: It’s My land , the first thing to do in Khanty-Mansiysk is to see the local mammoths. Seven life-size bronze prehistoric animals "roam" the area near Samarovsky Hill on the grounds of the Archeopark complex. Here you will also find a prehistoric bison, a pack of wolves, a cave bear, two woolly rhinos and prehistoric people themselves.

“Then you could get something to eat,” Irina advises. “The thing to do is to go to any local restaurant of Siberian cuisine and ask for muksun. It is a valuable freshwater fish of the salmon family, which is highly prized by locals and tourists alike.”

Khanty-Mansiysk is a relatively new city and only received this status in 1950. Soo oil was discovered in the region, prompting a dramatic push in its development. Prior to that, there were just Siberian settlements built by Russia in the late 16th century. Irina is impressed that a modern city was built in such harsh conditions.

The Church of the Protection of the Holy Virgin

The Church of the Protection of the Holy Virgin

“Cultural objects, squares, houses - all this is unique. And everything is new, there is nothing very ancient here. Except for mammoths!” she says.

In addition to the Archeopark mentioned above, Yevgeny Zinovyev’s list of favorite places in the city includes the Museum of Geology, Oil and Gas, along with the Museum of Nature and Man and the centuries-old cedars in the Samarovsky Chugas natural park. He recommends checking out the views from the observation deck near the Monument to the Explorers of the Yugra Land and paying a visit to a local bathhouse.

Yevgeny also provided us a checklist of culinary delights that anyone visiting Khanty-Mansiysk should be sure to try:

  • Muksun (in any form but best of all frozen and sliced as Stroganina).
  • Wild berries (cranberry, cowberry, cloudberry).
  • Venison (in any form but best of all stewed and sprinkled with frozen berries and pine nuts).

Sergey Yankovich recommends visiting the open-air ethnographic museum Torum Maa, which means "Sacred Land" in Mansi. “There you can get acquainted with the history of the city and the district, as well as with the life of the indigenous peoples of the Khanty and Mansi, who belong to the Finno-Ugric group,” Sergey says.

Torum Maa ethnic center

In addition, he advises anyone who comes to Khanty-Mansiysk to visit the spot where the Ob and Irtysh rivers meet, pay a visit to Misne Hotel’s restaurant and taste traditional dishes there, as well as dishes prepared by local fishermen and hunters while in the taiga.

According to Semyon Chepurnoy, the Valley of Streams natural park is another must for any visitor. It is one of local residents’ favorite recreation areas, where you can stroll along a dedicated footpath offering stunning views of the city. Semyon also advises trying pancakes at the GoodFood chain of cafes.

What are the best souvenirs?

“We all love something mystical and supernatural. There is a strong culture of shamanism here, so I think it’s cool to take with you some local amulets charged by a shaman—a bear claw or a pendant made of beads and deerskin,” says Irina Pudova.

A Khanty woman in the traditional dress selling souvenirs

Sergey Yankovich advises that authentic souvenirs can be found at the Crafts Center on Roznina Street. “There you can also see and even try on the national costumes of the Khanty and Mansi and try to solve traditional puzzles that representatives of the indigenous peoples made for their children.”

According to Yevgeny Zinovyev, the best souvenirs are Khanty and Mansi amulets, clothes, jewelry, as well as traditional local treats such as muksun, wild berries, pine nuts and venison.

For his part, Semyon Chepurnoy recommends bringing away memories and photographs as well as a little bit of Siberian Frost ❄.
