kids will love it.

Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned

not for kids that get bored quickly - long dialogs... but nice game for 6+

Nice game, get a bit boring at times - too many dialogs which are very long and there is no option to skip them. My 4 year old get bored quickly but I suppose for older kids maybe 6-7 years old would be fine and it teaches how to follow instruction, much better than fighting or shooting games!

Southern Africa Safari

9 days | experience the vast landscapes and incredible wildlife of southern africa.

Zimbabwe, Kruger National Park, Elephant walking grass

On this nine-day wildlife journey, you’ll explore the epic game parks of Southern Africa. Start in Victoria Falls, where in your free time, you can experience the thunderous falls however you like. Then, head to Hwange National Park, known for its elephant population, and Matobo National Park to track rhinos and learn about the local San people and their culture. Take game drives, look out for all the big cats and then spend some time in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mapungubwe National Park. Visit a 13th-century grave site and head out on a night safari to see some nocturnal wildlife that doesn’t come out while the sun’s up! Finally, you’ll go in search of lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and the African buffalo in the famous Kruger National Park.

Trip overview

  • Explore Kruger National Park for an unforgettable experience, where lions, elephants, and rhinos roam freely amid stunning natural beauty.
  • Visit the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust to learn about wildlife rehabilitation from conflict and poaching, then meet some rescued or orphaned wildlife in their care.
  • See the huge elephant populations of Hwange National Park on a 4WD game drive. This national park is also home to lots of other wildlife, with over 100 species of mammals!
  • Track rhinos on foot with an expert local guide in Matobo National Park – an exhilarating way to experience the animals of Zimbabwe. Then, see some of the ancient rock paintings here and learn about the local San people.
  • Explore the World Heritage site of Mapungubwe National Park, where the ancient ruins of a once-thriving kingdom meet stunning landscapes of baobab trees and sandstone cliffs. Then, head out on a night safari to spot nocturnal wildlife in a private game reserve next door.
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, and getting the best possible views of Africa's iconic wildlife. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows that let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page:  https://www.intrepidtravel.com/au/africa/overland
  • Southern Africa temperatures rise in the hot, dry period of September and October before the rains hit, and temperatures can get as high as 34 to 38°C (93 to 100°F). Not all accommodation will have air-conditioning. This is quite common across Africa, particularly in remote locations where lodges or camps operate on solar power or generators.
  • Zimbabwe is a very seasonal destination. What you see and experience can differ quite dramatically depending on the time of year you visit. Please consider this before you choose your departure date. See the 'Climate and seasonal information' section of the Essential Trip Information for more details.
  • There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
  • This trip can be partnered with other adventures into a ‘combo,’ which means that some of your fellow travellers may have begun their journey before today. If you’d like to spend more time in Africa, have a look at the combo itinerary, Southern Africa Highlights.

Mhoro! Welcome to Zimbabwe. Your adventure begins in Victoria Falls, known traditionally as Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. When you arrive, you’ll be met by a local representative and transferred to your hotel. You’ll then have a welcome meeting at the hotel at 6 pm. If you arrive early, maybe check out this incredible natural wonder your own way or visit the Wild Horizons activity centre to book an optional activity. You could even book a scenic helicopter flight over the falls! After the meeting, maybe get to know your group better over an optional welcome dinner.

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Complimentary Airport Arrival Transfer (shared)

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Please note that we have not risk assessed all activities on offer and can only recommend, and help book, those listed. If opting for a helicopter flight, choose Zambezi Helicopter company (CAA Zimbabwe), the only operator Intrepid endorses.

Depart Victoria Falls and hit the road to Hwange National Park, stopping at the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust along the way – one of The Intrepid Foundation projects. Here, you’ll learn about the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife, human-wildlife conflict and their role in anti-poaching. There may also be a chance to meet any rescued or orphaned wildlife currently in their care. This afternoon, take a game drive within the Hwange National Park in 4WDs. Hwange, the largest park in Zimbabwe, was designated as a national park in 1929 after acting as the royal hunting grounds of the Ndebele warrior-king Mzilikazi in the early 19th century. The park is famous for its elephants and is home to one of the largest populations in the world, as well as a huge variety of wildlife including over 100 mammals and nearly 400 bird species!

  • Hwange National Park - Guided 4x4 Game Drive
  • Victoria Falls - Visit to Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Leave Hwange as you make tracks for Matobo National Park. Along the way, you’ll stop at the Painted Dog Conservation Centre. Learn how the loss of quality habitats and poaching are driving the painted dogs towards extinction, and how the centre protects painted dogs and the Hwange ecosystem. After, it's onto Bulawayo – Zimbabwe's second-largest city. Take a stroll through the streets and stop in at a local restaurant for lunch. Continue to Matobo, where you'll spend the next two nights. The rocks balanced in Matobo Hills are thought to be the seats of God and ancestral spirits. The park is home to the grave of Cecil John Rhodes, founder of Rhodesia and the De Beers diamond company, and is especially known for its rhino population.

  • Hwange - Painted Dog Conservation visit

Enjoy an unforgettable day of tracking rhinos on foot with your local guides. You'll learn about the local plants and trees and their traditional uses, and there'll be plenty of chances to spot wildlife other than rhinos. The park is home to leopards, hippos, antelope and more! Learn about the San people who have called this area home for thousands of years and visit their rock paintings in the hills. Spend some time in the nearby villages to meet some of the local community before returning to your lodge for the evening.

  • Matobo National Park - Rhino Tracking

Say goodbye to Zimbabwe and cross the border into South Africa. Your bush lodge for tonight sits inside Mapesu Private Game Reserve – a 12,500 hectares property surrounded by unique sandstone formations, woodlands and wildlife. The reserve focuses on biodiversity, conservation and the protection and reintroduction of species including efforts specifically on endangered animals. When you arrive, have dinner here with your group and watch the night sky come alive with stars.

Today, you’ll explore Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site – home to South Africa’s most significant Iron Age site. Visit the 13th-century grave site on Mapungubwe Hill, which contains ornaments, jewellery, bowls and amulets covered in gold foil. The most spectacular of these pieces is a small, gold-covered rhinoceros. Apartheid kept this discovery a secret as the regime attempted to suppress any historical information that proved black cultural sophistication. Later, you have free time to relax at the lodge or you can take an optional game drive in through the park. Tonight, you’ll head out on a night safari in Mapesu Private Game Reserve. Look out for bush babies (galagos), bushpigs, hyenas, genets and tiny chameleons – all of which don’t come out much during the day. Maybe you’ll even get lucky and encounter a leopard!

Wake up early this morning and drive to Greater Kruger National Park. When you arrive, the rest of the day is free for you to enjoy. Maybe kick back at the lodge and relax with a good book, chat to your fellow travellers over cards, take a dip in the on-site swimming pool or venture out for more wildlife spotting on an optional safari in a private game reserve within the national park.

Your travel time today will be approximately 5.5 hours.

Start the day early and head into Kruger National Park – one of the largest game reserves in Southern Africa and home to over 500 bird species, 100 species of reptile and 150 mammal species including all the big cats. Your wildlife experience begins as soon as you enter the park, as you're taken into prime viewing areas. Enjoy a picnic breakfast here before spending the rest of the day wildlife-spotting in the park, watching game, birds and stopping at various waterholes as you go. The group will leave the park in the late afternoon and return to the lodge for another relaxed evening.

  • Kruger National Park - Full Day Open Safari Vehicle Game Drive

Enjoy the scenic route back to Johannesburg filled with beautiful views of stunning landscape. Along the way, you’ll visit the breathtaking Three Rondawels Viewpoint and the impressive Bourke's Luck Potholes, perfect stops to break up the drive and enjoy the scenery. When you arrive in Johannesburg, your adventure comes to an end. If you’d like to extend your stay here, and it’s recommended that you do, just get in touch with your booking agent ahead of time.

  • Panorama Route - Bourke's Luck Potholes
  • Panorama Route - God's Window Viewpoint

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 hours.

If you’re flying out tonight, please do not book any international flights before 10 pm.

Dates and availability

Important notes.

1. If you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip, you may purchase a single supplement, subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information.

2. A complimentary airport arrival transfer is included; valid if you are arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-tour accommodation through us. You must provide your flight details to your booking agent at least 14 days prior to travel.

3. The weight of baggage that can be brought on this tour is limited by the packing space and weight restrictions of the truck. The weight limit for luggage on all of our trucks is a maximum of 15-20kgs per person, plus a maximum of 5kgs for your day pack. Backpacks shouldn’t have an external frame unless it can easily be removed and stored separately to avoid damaging other people’s luggage. We strongly advise passengers to travel with a backpack or a duffel bag, and it is essential that no hard suitcases be brought on tour. For valuables, like passports, we offer a safe on each vehicle that is shared by all passengers to keep their documentation safe during their journey.

4. Border crossing delays in the region have been sporadic and difficult to predict. What takes an hour one day may take four hours the next. This may affect the order of activities in the itinerary. We understand this uncertainty can be frustrating, and we strongly recommend packing a bit of patience and flexibility.

Want an in-depth insight into this trip? Essential Trip Information provides a detailed itinerary, visa info, how to get to your hotel, what's included - pretty much everything you need to know about this adventure and more.

Fam Trip Report: Exploring the Wild Wonders of Botswana

Our Botswana Fam Trip, with expert DMC partner Bush Ways, embarked on a journey through the untamed landscapes of Botswana - it was an adventure like no other. Our Africa Representation Manager, Robyn, recounts her top ten highlights.

safari adventures africa ps2

"I have been completely blown away by my experience on this Fam Trip, from the sheer variety of birds and bugs to the sprawling savannahs teeming with wildlife, each moment is a testament to the beauty and boundless diversity of nature. Here are my top 10 reasons to return to Botswana with Bush Ways again and again"

1. Our Guides

Moscow and Gabriel (eventually nicknamed Mad-Hatter Moscow and Goshawk Gabby) were exceptional. It is such a skill to please the appetites of three very different safari-goers all in the same vehicle - birders, botanists and wildlife enthusiasts. Yet, for Gabby and Moscow, it appeared to be a breeze.

safari adventures africa ps2

Gabby is a testament to Bush Ways Safaris’ commitment to the Tswana people (also known as the Batswana) by nurturing sustainable growth and creating a positive community impact. Gabby started as a Chef, worked his way up to lodge guide and finally became a mobile safari guide, the most esteemed position in Bush Ways Safaris. He is one of many Bush Ways Safaris employees who have been able to nurture and grow their passions into full-time careers.

2. Operational Excellence and Premium Camping

Our experience with Bush Ways Mobile Safaris redefines the notion of premium camping, seamlessly blending comfort and adventure. From spacious tents with modern amenities, fully customised safari vehicles, to gourmet meals served under the stars, each moment is a celebration of the finer things in life against the backdrop of the African bush.

safari adventures africa ps2

Bush Ways Safaris Headquarters is such a well-oiled machine. Did you know they even have their own supermarket?! A massive storeroom with all groceries required for every type of booking. With industrial precision a “dry goods shopping crate on wheels” is packed, boxed, labelled and ready before the trip starts. The walk-in refrigerator ensures that only the freshest ingredients are taken along on safari, packed and labelled for loading on the day of departure.

During any transit through Maun that includes a lunch break, unbeknownst to guests, the mobile safari vehicle is taken through the workshop for a pit stop routine check and clean with a qualified car surgeon and hygienist (mechanic) - all to ensure that the vehicles are always in the best condition possible.

safari adventures africa ps2

The workshop has a parts shop stocked with spares for every single vehicle (over 30), down to the bolt. This means no delays in waiting for parts from abroad. Each car has its own “medical record” so to speak. Whether it was a squeak, a tyre change or complete aesthetic overhaul, every vehicle's medical/drive/repair history is clear. There is also a refill station onsite, ensuring no time is wasted in queues or driving around for gas.

Their aesthetics & design workshop is where all things “Bush Ways” are dreamt of, designed and built -  from car modifications to closets to cushions. Modifications of the safari vehicle include a water filtration system, providing purified drinking water throughout the trip, built-in refrigeration, power supply for multiple devices, soft seat cushioning,  a fold down windshield for uninterrupted views and plenty of storage.

Their laundry room ensures all laundry is cleaned and sanitised to the highest standard and their mobile safari equipment room is stocked and managed with expert precision. Before and after every safari, every item is checked and tested, from tent zips to foldaway chairs.

Tents and all soft furnishings are designed and repaired in house and their skilled tailor is able to make and repair any item from tents to camping chairs.

3. Wildlife Encounters & Nature Appreciation

No matter how many safaris you’ve experienced in other African countries, Botswana is entirely unique.

Wildlife in Botswana is an in-person wildlife documentary and the narrator is your Bush Ways Safaris guide. In five minute segments, you can see a pride of 13 lions at sunset with young cubs playfully chewing on male lion adolescent ears, charging peers and pouncing on adult lionesses. In another segment, a breeding herd of elephants racing towards a waterhole for a drink, only to find they are in fact being chased by a bull in musth. Not forgetting the iconic segment of a newborn Cape Buffalo calf, wet with afterbirth, being approached by a herd of uncertain bulls and nurturing cows as it takes its first steps.

safari adventures africa ps2

The sheer magnitude of Botswana's rich biodiversity unfolded before our eyes as we traversed the ever-changing terrain of Botswana. From the lush forests to the Kalahari sand dunes to shimmering waterways and the expansive plains, every vista is a masterpiece.

4. Community Engagement

Engaging with local communities and supporting grassroots initiatives enables Bush Ways Safaris and their guests to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people encountered on safari.

safari adventures africa ps2

The Fam Trip highlighted community engagement efforts, such as opening local schools, supporting women's basket weaving, dance and choir collectives and startups that upcycle wine bottles for drinking glasses. The Fam Trip showcased Bush Ways Safaris' commitment to social responsibility, positive social change and empowerment within the communities.

safari adventures africa ps2

 5. Cultural Immersion

Bush Ways Safaris provides the opportunity for a cultural exchange in each of the communities it passes through. Keeping in mind that much of Botswana's wildlife is protected, this naturally opposes the traditional ways of the San Bushmen who would live off the land. In an effort to support conservation, the San Bushmen communities within protected areas have taken employment at local lodges and conservancies.

safari adventures africa ps2

Employment eliminates the need for traditional ways of hunting and gathering but should not eliminate the sharing of tradition. To this point, guests are invited to a cultural exchange, walking with San Bushmen (employed members of the lodges) as they and their ancestors did. In a short time, the San Bushmen make it apparent that the Kalahari is rich in medicine and means to live a long life, despite its harsh climate. The key is knowing the ways of the San Bushmen where each plant has a purpose, each meal can be tracked in sand and no carcass is discarded as the entire animal has a purpose.

6. Culinary Experiences

Exploring the culinary delights of Bush Ways Safaris’ kitchen is a gastronomic journey like no other. From flame grilled steak fillets to fragrant lamb tagines , all cooked over the campfire using traditional cooking techniques that tantalise the taste buds. Bread, cakes and pastries are baked in a Dutch oven each day.

safari adventures africa ps2

7. Adventure and Exploration

Venturing off the beaten track, we embraced the thrill of adventure and the excitement of the unknown. Navigating rugged terrain on wild sage lined roads, safari drives through mopane forests, village tours boasting history and tradition, chasing sundowner experiences to top the last one and encountering wildlife in their natural habitat, each moment was an opportunity to push the boundaries of exploration and discover the true essence of this destination.

Floating in a mokoro on the Kwhai river, it was powerful to observe how, just as your view point is closer to the ground, your energy calmed and you became one with the surroundings. A variety of dazzling dragonflies dance around the lily pads which (as well as the Lily’s) are extremely useful to people on the river.

safari adventures africa ps2

The white lily flower has a bulb that tastes like fragrant potato, often cooked with meat. The lily pad itself can be used as a sunhat from the blaring sun. The flower and its long stem can be used decoratively as a neckpiece. The neckpiece is often gifted to women on birthdays, and when gifted, she is called “the Queen of the Okavango”. Finally, the plant has several medicinal uses.

safari adventures africa ps2

8. Infrastructure and Amenities

The modern infrastructure and amenities available to travellers in Botswana offer unparalleled convenience and comfort on safari. It reflects the growing sophistication of tourism infrastructure in the region.

Each village has a clinic and airlift medivac is a standard inclusion in the Bush Ways Safaris' product. Thanks to well-crafted itineraries, ATMs, pharmacies and other facilities can be found enroute at some stage of the trip. The main road that dissects Botswana is in perfect condition allowing for fast transfers and fast flowing traffic.

9. Sustainability and Conservation

Bush Ways Safaris’ commitment to responsible tourism practices underscores the importance of preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of Botswana. By supporting local initiatives, minimising their environmental footprint, and promoting eco-friendly tourism options, Bush Ways Safaris strived to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy these pristine landscapes for years to come.

safari adventures africa ps2

10. Location, location, location!

Whether on the lodge to lodge, adventure camping or premium camping safari with Bush Ways Safaris, every location has been expertly chosen to ensure you are amidst the action for the best possible experience of the village or wildlife reserve. Every lodge has a breathtaking view of flood plains, rivers or pans. Each camp site puts you in the middle of the morning leopard calls or late night hyena whoops.

safari adventures africa ps2

Camps aside, the tea breaks during long drives are moments to remember as you sip your tea watching wildlife at the waterhole. Sunsets are perched in magnificent viewpoints with views over landscapes you’ve been exploring all day.

Bush Ways Safaris is the answer to your Botswana question!

In reflecting on the myriad highlights and unforgettable moments that have defined our adventure, it is with gratitude that we recognise it wouldn’t be possible without Bush Ways Safaris. From the delicate balance of life in these pristine ecosystems to the awe-inspiring beauty of nature and the warmth and hospitality of the local communities, each experience has left an indelible mark on our hearts, reminding us of the transformative power of travel and the boundless wonders that await those who dare to explore.

Travel through the remote Russian countryside

Undoubtably one of the most well-known train journeys in the world, the Trans-Siberian Express runs like a ribbon of steel through the remote Russian countryside connecting Moscow in the east to Vladivostok in the west. This impressive feat of engineering spans 9,259 kilometres (5,752 miles) and to travel its length is the epic journey of a lifetime. There are a few different routes to choose from, and the total number of days to complete the journey also varies.

One route travels through the remote Mongolian desert and stops in the capital, Ulaan Baatar. Once the very centre of an enormous empire led by Genghis Khan, Mongolia is famed for its beautiful landscapes, nomadic people and fascinating history. The country is also famous for its endless green Steppes and the white Gers (Yurts) of nomadic herders.

Natural Focus offers several rail departures exploring this remarkable region. The luxury train accommodates a maximum capacity in Russia of 100 passengers, although many departures operate with smaller numbers. Travellers can be assured of a superb rail experience and guests can expect first class service, elegant surroundings, fine dining, and the comforts and privacy of their own well-appointed ensuite cabins.

Trans Siberian Bar Lounge

Bar Lounge Car

When not out on an excursion or enjoying the view from the window of your private cabin, the perfect place to relax, unwind and meet fellow travellers is in the Bar Lounge Car. This is the social heart of the Trans-Siberian Express and the place where many fabulous memories will be made. Chat to fellow guests about the day’s adventures over a drink or play a game of cards with new-found friends before dinner.

Throughout your journey, the Bar Lounge Car and Restaurant Car will play host to several entertaining activities, such as lectures on local history and culture or even Russian language lessons. Information sessions about arrival and departure times and daily itineraries will also be given here.

The Restaurant Car

Each day, guests can make their way to the Restaurant Car for a superb continental breakfast buffet along with hot tea or coffee. For a hearty cooked breakfast, passengers can order from the onboard chef. Lunches and dinners are also served in the Restaurant Car and guests can expect a culinary experience inspired by the countries they are travelling through, and quality international cuisine. All meals are created from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, prepared by the skilful Executive Chef and the onboard team. Vegetarian and other dietary options are also available. Expert service and an excellent choice of wines accompany all lunches and dinners, as well as bottled mineral water, draught beer and soft drinks. An informal dress code applies throughout the journey.

Trans Siberian

Trans-Siberian Express (Eastbound)

15 days/14 nights

Embark on one of the world’s greatest railway adventures – The Trans-Siberian Express – running from Moscow to Vladivostok. This bucket-list 15 day/14 night itinerary passes through Russian cities including Kazan, Novosibirsk and Irkutsk as well as the capital of Mongolia, Ulaan Baatar on its epic journey east. Along the way, experience superb hospitality, get to know your fellow travellers, and enjoy an array of fascinating off-train excursions.

Moscow, Russia

On arrival at Moscow Airport, you will be met and transferred to the stylish Four Seasons Hotel Moscow. Located in the historic building of Moskva Hotel – and occupying one of the most enviable addresses in the very heart of Moscow – the hotel is a short walk from major sights including the Kremlin, Red Square and the Bolshoi Theatre.

On your first evening in the city, you will be invited to a champagne drinks reception before an exclusive Welcome Dinner. Guests can enjoy specially selected international wines that are included with dinner, as with all meals during the tour. D

Moscow Russia

This morning, enjoy a guided tour of Moscow taking in the capital’s best sights. Witness the grandeur of the Kremlin – the spiritual, historical and political heart of Moscow – including an exclusive private viewing of the Armoury Chamber that houses the treasures of the Tsars.

Visit Red Square – the symbol of Russia’s former military and political might – with its iconic architecture, including the ornate, onion-domes of St Basil’s Cathedral, and the beautiful facade of the famous GUM department store, built during Tsarist times.

Enjoy lunch at Café Pushkin, a legendary Moscow restaurant serving traditional Russian cuisine whose décor revives the atmosphere of an early 19th century mansion. Guests will also visit the extravagantly decorated underground stations of the Moscow metro – furnished with statues, frescoes and mosaics showcasing Socialist art.

If travellers have been to Moscow before and seen many of the key highlights mentioned above, an alternative tour is possible exploring sights such as the famous State Tretyakov Gallery (National Museum of Fine Art) or the Space Museum (subject to opening times).

In the late afternoon, arrive at Moscow Kazansky Station and be greeted in the ornately decorated Imperial Waiting Room with a cold glass of Russian Champagne and canapés, as you mix with the other guests and welcomed by staff. Approximately 30 minutes before departure, you will be escort to Platform 1 to board the Golden Eagle. B L D

Today, explore the picturesque and historic city of Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan situated on the River Volga. Discover the city’s rich tapestry of history and culture, including exploring the legendary Kremlin Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the walls of this ancient citadel is the stunning mosque, with its picture-perfect onion-domed cathedral.

Kazan is also the birthplace of one of Russia’s most famous opera singers, Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938). Honouring his memory, enjoy a private concert of his music. There will also be time to wander through the main pedestrian area of Kazan and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the city. B L D

Yekaterinburg

Yekaterinburg, founded in 1723 by Peter the Great, is the capital of the Urals. The Ural Mountains (known as the Great Divide) create a natural border between Europe and Asia. The cultural and architectural influences of European and Asian civilisations come together in this fascinating and cosmopolitan landscape.

Your city tour explores the famous site where the Romanov, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, was executed with his family by the Bolsheviks in 1918 following 78 days of imprisonment. Now a church dedicated to their memory, this site provides a powerful insight into the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. The tour will also visit the obelisk marking the geographical border – where you can drink a glass of champagne with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia.

Time permitting, there may be a chance to visit the recently opened Museum of Military Machinery. The museum houses a truly fascinating collection of military vehicles, such as tanks, aircraft, boats and even armoured trains. The museum is a must visit for anyone interested in Soviet history. Alternatively, make a short stop at the recently opened Boris Yeltsin Presidential Centre, which is dedicated to the contemporary political history of Russia and its first president. B L D

Novosibirsk

This morning’s stop is the modern ‘Soviet’ city of Novosibirsk, where you can experience the life and character of the city’s rich culture. Located in the heart of Russia, the city is situated on both banks of the River Ob.

Today’s explorations take guests to Lenin Square where the imposing Opera House (an architectural marvel) is located. One of the largest opera houses in the world, the building housing two permanent ballet and opera companies. In front of the Opera House there is also an impressive statue of Lenin.

Time permitting, south of the city, visit Novosibirsk’s excellent Railway Museum – displaying an impressive array of locomotives and rolling stock from the late 1800s (including carriages of the Tsars) through to the Soviet era. Alternatively, guests might also have the chance to visit the Mineralogical Centre with its fine display of Siberian minerals. B L D

Enjoy life onboard this splendid train today. Unwind and reflect on the many sights and sounds you have experienced on your journey so far. Chat to your fellow passengers over a drink in Bar Lounge Car, learn a few words of Russian or enjoy the ever-changing landscape from the comforts of your cabin. B L D

Today, explore Irkutsk – sometimes known as the ‘Paris of Siberia’ – and take in this fascinating city’s best highlights. Tour highlights include the classic wooden architecture with its intricately carved lace-like decorations. This architectural decoration has given many of this region’s buildings a distinctive and unique appearance.

You will also visit the Volkonsky House Museum, dedicated to the memory of the aristocrats who were exiled to this remote outpost after the failed Decembrist uprising of 1825. Enjoy a champagne reception and private concert.

Alternatively, learn to cook some traditional Russian dishes with a local chef and prepare your own lunch, or visit a traditional Russian Dacha (summer country house) and gain an insight into the everyday life of a Russian family. B L D

Lake Baikal

Few natural sights can surpass the beauty and grandeur of Lake Baikal, a major highlight on your Trans-Siberian journey. Also known as the ‘Pearl of Siberia’, this enormous lake is the deepest in the world and holds roughly 20 per cent of the world’s freshwater. If that isn’t impressive enough, it is also home to a unique breed of freshwater seal and over 50 species of fish.

For approximately 5 hours today’s rail journey winds through tunnels and along cliff hugging tracks above the lake. This breath-taking section of rail – engineered in the early 20th century – boasts plenty of impressive vistas including snow-capped peaks along the far shore that form a picture-perfect backdrop. To top things off, the train will be hauled by a Soviet Era steam locomotive on this beautiful section of line.

Weather permitting, stop in one of the most picturesque locations by the lake for photographs and, for the brave hearted, a refreshing swim in the crystal clear and ice-cold waters of Lake Baikal. At the end of the Baikal branch line, disembark the train and travel by boat on the lake to Listvyanka, a small settlement nestled at the base of the surrounding hills. Here, guests will visit the Lake Baikal Museum and Aquarium and learn about the fascinating flora and fauna of the lake.

Alternatively, guests may choose to hike up Chersky Mount or take the chair lift, which offers some spectacular, panoramic hillside views of the lake below. Instead of lunch on the train, enjoy a delicious lakeside barbecue prepared by your onboard chefs under a covered dining area, featuring freshly smoked omul fish. B L D

Today, discover the ethnic and cultural diversity of Ulan Ude, the capital of the Buryat Republic, that offers a unique insight into its heritage.

As you explore the area, you will notice the different faces of the welcoming Buryat people. During your exploration of the Old Believers’ Village, you can learn about the culture and history of these religious people and are treated to a concert featuring local traditions and folk singing. B L D

Ulaan Baatar

Your Trans-Siberian adventure takes you into Mongolia and a visit to its incredible capital – Ulaan Baatar – once the very centre of an enormous empire led by Genghis Khan. Mongolia is a vast country of beautiful landscapes and nomadic people, rich in culture and history, and famous for its endless green Steppes, grazing livestock and the white Gers (Yurts) of nomadic herders.

Today’s tour starts at Gandan Monastery, one of Mongolia’s most important Buddhist monasteries, home to a community of some 500 monks. The monastery’s full name – Gandantegchinlen – translates as ‘the great place of complete joy.’ Your next stop is Chinggis Square (formerly Sukhbaatar Square), where travellers can see the central monument to Genghis Khan.

Heading out of the city, drive to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park and witness the beautiful scenery of wild Mongolia. There is the opportunity to visit a traditional Ger and meet a nomadic family or to try your hand at horse-riding, an essential part of Mongolian life.

Alternatively, there is an option to stay in the city and explore it in greater depth. Take a tour of the National Museum where you can learn about the country’s intriguing past. You will also see Bogd Khan Winter Palace Museum (built between 1893 and 1903), the winter residences of Bogd Khan, the last Mongolian emperor. There may also be some free time for shopping for Mongolian souvenirs and enjoy a performance of traditional Mongolian throat singing and contortionists. B L D

Please note:  Depending on final timings provided by the railway authorities the railway journey from Russia into Ulaan Baatar may have to be substituted with a private jet charter from Irkutsk or Ulan Ude, so that the train can maintain the advertised programme for Mongolia.

Enjoy a more leisurely pace today as the train passes through the beautiful landscape of the Russian Far East. If they wish, guests can attend one of the interesting lectures or Russian language lessons. B L D

Today offers another chance to relax onboard or practice your Russian, as the train follows the Shilka and Amur rivers, close to the Chinese border. Enjoy Russia at its most dramatic and remote. B L D

The train passes directly north of Seoul, Darwin and Osaka today, the last full day on board. You will also reach the most easterly point of this mammoth journey, passing through Khabarovsk, where the train crosses the River Amur. Tonight, enjoy a final dinner on board that has been your home for the last twelve days, the Golden Eagle slowly approaches the final destination of this unforgettable journey. B L D

Vladivostok

Vladivostok is a military port located on the western shores of the Sea of Japan and is home to the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet. Due to its military importance, the city was closed to foreigners between 1930 and 1992. Vladivostok (literally  ‘Ruler of the East’) offers visitors an interesting opportunity to explore its principal military attractions including a visit to a preserved World War Two submarine. Our city tour will also take us to the iconic suspension bridge over Golden Horn Bay, one of the largest of its kind worldwide, which opened in 2012 for the APEC conference.

This evening you are invited to our farewell dinner. Specially selected international wines are included with dinner, as with all meals during the tour. Our hotel in Vladivostok, where we stay for one night, is the five-star Lotte Hotel Vladivostok. B L D

Following breakfast, the remainder of your time in Vladivostok is at your leisure, before being transferred to the airport for your onward flight. Tour ends. B
