Steven Patrick Morrissey is an English singer/songwriter from Lancashire, England who is famed for fronting the iconic alternative rock band The Smiths.

Morrisey's first links to music can be found in the late 70's, when he discovered an adoration for post punk and fronted a band called The Nosebleeds. After moving between bands and line ups whilst writing early tracks including 'Peppermint Heaven' and 'I Get Nervous', he took a short break from music to pursue writing on popular culture and published three books. In 1982, Morrisey met guitarist Johnny Marr and described their relationship incredibly positively: "We got on absolutely famously. We were very similar in drive."

The band soon signed to independent label Rough Trade Records and released an early single that was pushed heavily by John Peel. Thanks to constant support from the radio DJ and moderate chart success, The Smiths found themselves a loyal fan base from the offset. The successes simply snowballed, the band worked together as a concise artistic unit and Morrisey was praised for his poetic, relatable lyrical abilities which went on to inspire guitar bands such as Oasis and The Stone Roses. Many consider them to be "the most influential British guitar group of the decade", they spearheaded the Brit pop movement and rejuvenated the guitar music scene of Manchester inspiring bands such as Blur to form after seeing the band perform on the South Bank Show.

However in 1987, the band parted due to a strained relationship between Marr & Morrisey. The latter continued to record as a solo artist and achieved commercial success, three of his albums including his debut topped the UK charts with a whole host of hit singles including 'Suedehead', 'Irish Blood, English Heart' and 'Interesting Drug'. Morrisey is known for his radical views on politics and the British monarchy. He fiercely opposes the latter stating that he doesn't believe that "the royal family speak for England now and I don't think England needs them". He is also a serious animal rights activist and a supporter of PETA, claiming in 2014 that there's"no difference between eating animals and paedophilia. They are both rape, violence, murder." The songwriter has left a huge legacy to both pop and rock music and in 2014, The Smiths were revealed as a nominee to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

Morrissey at the Royal Albert Hall, 7th March 2018

This was my seventh time seeing the Mozfather live and, having needed a telescope to see him last time I went (at the O2), this time I had splashed out on a good seat. I treated myself, in other words, and I'm glad I did, because being up close really made the evening. And not just for the photos and videos I took, but for the details ... the looks on his face, the hand gestures. All of that. You don't get it from the back of an enormodome, even with Jumbotrons to help. But anyway. After a quick perusal of the merchandise stall (offering scarves, fans, badges and pillowcases as well as the obligatory t-shirts, none of which featured contemporary photographs of Moz), I took my seat early and, if I'm honest, with a little trepidation. Reviews of earlier shows on the tour had been mixed, with The Guardian very much determined not to enjoy themselves. Also, I'm often a little unsure how gigs in all-seater venues will play out - often, the atmosphere is different, I think. Less of a spark. And I was concerned that, although my ticket clearly said "Morrissey plus special guests", I had read that the support act was a film show, not a band... At precisely 8.15pm the pre-show back-drop picture of the late Peter Wyngarde as Jason King disappeared, and the film show started.

To be honest, "film show" is over stating it a bit. YouTube clips spliced together is more accurate. But it was an eclectic selection - with links to the clips used where possible, the montage included: early Ramones; Something Here In My Heart by 60s girl group The Paper Dolls; Tatu covering How Soon Is Now? on a German retread of TOTP; The Sound Of The Crowd by The Human League; Say It Loud, I'm Black And I'm Proud by James Brown; a spoken word Candy Darling clip (I think); Dionne Warwick singing Don't Make Me Over; a drag artist joking about nationality; The Sex Pistols singing God Save The Queen; a 60s-looking civil rights speech for racial equality that I couldn't ID; Sally's Song by Amy Lee; a Germaine Greer talking head spot; a clip from L'Insoumis of Alain Delon reclining into his Queen Is Dead sleeve art pose (which got a big cheer); It's The Same Old Song by The Four Tops; Jet Boy by The New York Dolls ... and probably more besides. Throughout this, the bloke sitting next to me kept looking up the songs on Shazam - when he couldn't get a match for the James Brown track, I had to lean over and help him out. He even Shazam'ed the Sex Pistols track, surely one of the least ambiguous tracks of the last fifty years. But I digress.

At precisely 8.50pm the screen that all this had been projected on was whipped down, and out strode Morrissey and his band. He cuts a substantial figure these days, does Moz - not fat but no longer the skinny, callow figure of yesteryear. Middle-aged spread comes to us all if you we eat too many pies, even vegetarian pies. And the fabled quiff is largely a thing of the past, a victim of a receding hairline. But he is still magnetic on stage, owning the space. Dressed top to toe in dark clothes, a string of beads and a dangling key fob completed Morrissey's look. The band, by contrast, were all in white shirts. The stage was lit with neon prefect badge shapes, a nod to the Low In High School theme.

After opening strongly with The Last Of The Famous International Playboys and I Wish You Lonely, the audience was treated to the first of many asides from a pleasantly chatty Moz: "So amazingly, I'm still alive. The question is, are you?" This was followed by Jacky's Only Happy When She's Up On The Stage, which slowed things down a bit, before a stomping Suedehead, which sped them back up again. The crowd, predictably, went wild for this, even though many of them weren't alive when it was released.

After this, there was a bit of a pause whilst Moz dispensed with the line of security at the front of the stage who were spoiling the devoted's view, and complained to unseen crew member Max about a spotlight giving him a headache. When it was turned off, he remarked, "Now you can't see me, which is pretty perfect." This was followed by recent album track When You Open Your Legs, before another aside between tracks: a propos of nothing, Moz appeared to say something like, "Please believe me, I'm not. People are extremely ignorant. They can't be controlled, so don't control them." Was this a reference to Der Spiegel's recent portrayal of him? We may never know.

Slightly unexpectedly, for me at least, Munich Air Disaster 1958 was next, complete with archive footage of Busby's Babes projected on the back screen. "We miss them," Moz concluded. This was swiftly followed by Home Is A Question Mark, for which Jesse Tobias unleashed an electric 12-string and I got a sudden bout of guitarist's envy. After My Love, I'd Do Anything For You, the stage lighting switched to red and yellow as a clue for what was coming next. "This song is delightful," said Moz. "About slavery and servitude in Espana." After which the band launched into The Bullfighter Dies, accompanied by fairly explicit video footage of bulls being stabbed by matadors (during the verses) and matadors being gored (during the "hooray, hooray" chorus). The point was well, if graphically, made.

The only real lull in the show followed, with a slightly flat run-through of If You Don't Like Me, Don't Look At Me. Quite a lot of people went for drinks. Not me though. So I was there to see the cover of Pretenders' track Back On The Chain Gang that followed (backdropped with Chrissie Hynde's yearbook photo), and Moz introducing World Peace Is None Of Your Business by saying, "We invented democracy. We invented free speech. I think it's time we got it back."

The next track was a personal favourite, Hold On To Your Friends, at the end of which (slightly bizarrely) Moz signed some vinyl for people in the front row, whilst the crowd chanted his name. Then pianist Gustavo Manzur teased an elongated version of the piano intro to In Your Lap before the band launched into Everyday Is Like Sunday and the crowd combusted. This was the first in a run of five blistering tracks: Jack The Ripper was next, with the stage bathed in red light and smoke; then came recent single Spent The Day In Bed, quite a singalong for the crowd; this was followed by live favourite Speedway, which has lost none of its power; and then, the only Smiths track of the night, How Soon Is Now?, ending with drummer Matthew Ira Walker letting loose on the gong and timpani.

This might have been the obvious point at which to end the main set, but no. Who Will Protect Us From The Police? and I'm Not Sorry followed, before the band lined up to take a bow. Then they slipped off-stage, only to return minutes later, for Morrissey to say goodnight with "As always, be good to yourself, be kind to animals and look after each other. And that's it really." Moz had changed his shirt, donning a plain white number that, predictably enough, was thrown into the crowd at the end of the sole encore track, a thumping Irish Blood, English heart. As the band scooted off-stage, Jesse launched a plectrum into the crowd too, but not many noticed - they were too busy forming a polite but determined scrum around the shirt.

And then the house lights came up and it was all over. I have to tell you, I felt ecstatic. As I've already said, sitting so close to the action made a real difference and changed, for me, what might have just been Morrissey singing into Morrissey performing. And although I'd taken my proper camera, rather than rely on my phone, I came away feeling I wanted an actual souvenir, a keepsake more substantial than digital photographs ... so I bought a set of Moz lapel badges from the merch stall on the way out. As I trudged through a dark Hyde Park to Lancaster Gate tube, I reflected that this was, if not the best I had seen Moz, certainly in the top three.

Wow. Morrissey has been my favourite artist for a long time. But last night just exceeded my expectations by far. He played two of songs by The Smiths, firstly I Started Something I Couldn’t Finish. The vocals he has are just amazing, truly truly brillaint. He did How Soon Is Now and the atmosphere was incredible. He did some brilliant songs from his new album Low In High School my favourite being I Wish You Lonely. He also did Suedehead, Everyday Is Like Sunday and Jack The Ripper which were all absolutely fantastic. At one song there was a digereedoo being played and the rest of his band were very active with the crowd. Morrissey himself was lovely and charming and spoke to the crowd a lot. But the moment for me was Speedway. He played it before he came on for his encore, I was so so sure that he wasn’t going to play it and then I heard the Speedway noise. I lit up and just could not believe I was hearing my favourite song. He left some parts of the first verse blank and that was so amazing to hear the crowd sing. I cried throughout and cried after. He was so beautiful and it was the best experience of my life so far.

The venue itself was really good and where Morrissey was positioned was brilliant because we were stood on the side and still had perfect view. And I’m quite small.

Morrissey is one-of-a-kind. I have been listening and admiring his work since The Smiths days and have followed his solo career with equal enthusiasm. His lyrics are amazing and awe-inspiring and his voice melodic and haunting.

I attended a fantastic concert by Morrissey quite by accident. I was driving through Wichita Falls, Texas with a friend and saw a giant LED sign from the highway advertising his concert that very evening. What an unusual twist of circumstances! Well, I immediately said (perhaps shouted) to my friend driving - pull over! I pointed out the sign and demanded that we stop, get a hotel room, and attend the concert if possible. My friend absolutely agreed. The show did not disappoint. Despite being an international music icon, Morissey seems to be not one bit deterred from small theaters in small cities and puts on a fantastic show. Whether you are familiar with Morrissey or not, you will enjoy his concerts thoroughly. He has one of the most enchanting voices that you will ever hear, coupled with astounding and thought-provoking lyrics that come to life in person. Plus, Morissey appeals to a wide range of fans of all ages and backgrounds, so the audience is a fun mix of people.

While critical adoration for Stephen Patrick Morrissey has fluctuated throughout his career – from adulation to vilification and back again – the adoration of his fan base has been a constant. Droves of Moz devotees (fan being too measly a word for the borderline worshipping that goes on at his shows) still flock to see the former Smiths frontman play not only songs from the Morrissey / Marr heyday, but from his growing back catalogue of solo material that contains more than its own share of indie classics ("Everyday Is Like Sunday," "Suedehead" and "Irish Blood, English Heart") generate cheers at the very least on the level of "Still Ill" - that is, if he feels like playing it. Another thing undiminished by the passage of time is Morrissey’s inimitable voice, which remains as expressive and on the money as ever, along with the prowess of his backing band. Led by long time collaborator Boz Boorer, it’s only when witnessing them live that you discover the true reason he’s so reluctant to reform The Smiths, no matter how much money he’s thrown at them – frankly (Mr. Shankly), with a band so attuned to his idiosyncrasies as this one, there just isn’t any need.

When I first learned that Morrissey would be coming to Visalia, I couldn't believe it. I was over the moon excited as I've been a fan for a very long time.

Given the length of his career, it was hard to pinpoint what exactly he'd include in his set list. But as the band hit the stage and the lights came on, it was pure magic.

The energy of the crowd was amazing and that was just intensified by the vivid imagery of the visuals used and beautifully sad voice of Morrissey. I didn't know what to expect live as I've never seen him before but I was absolutely enthralled the whole time.

Despite several stage jumpers, Morrissey was completely focused on delivering a magnificent performance. I had heard horror story about sets being insanely short or last minute cancellations but the two hours he played will forever stay with me. I don't know how else to say it--everyone NEEDS to see this man at least once. I was deeply moved.

I purchased these tickets as soon as I knew of their upcoming existence. I had very high hopes and I was teeming with excitement to see this artist. I was severely let down. We arrive at the venue on NYE for the show which was supposed to begin at 8:00 pm. No supporting acts, so we waited staring at a projector screen showing random stuff for over an hour. He begins with Suedehead at around 9:10 and I think to myself ok, this is worth the wait. It was all downhill from there.

A bunch of newer songs and another guy singing in Spanish. I have nothing against the Spanish language, I am of South American descent but I paid to see Morrissey. I know he's a big activist and speaks out against animals as food but I wasn't looking to be depressed on NYE. He performed 'Meat is Murder' with slaughterhouse footage in the background. That was the last straw for me, evening ruined. Happy New Year!!

I will not go see him live again.

I thought the "artist" request of not providing any sort of meat at the concert JUST because he is vegan, plus the video showing how animals are being slaughtered for human consumption was absolutely disgusting. Everyone is entitled to be carnivore, vegetarian, vegan WITHOUT being judged by others.

Then, as if it wasn't enough, he started going all "political" about it in the middle of the concert. WELL, I DID NOT PAY TO HEAR HIS POLITICAL VIEWS, I PAID TO LISTEN TO HIM SINGING!

He has clearly shown a total lack of respect for his public, only catering for his own self!

And ALL THAT SHIT to just hear 3 songs I relate to!!!!!

My first AND last time watching Morrissey! a tick in my blacklist.

Well I had pretty awesome seats so I got an up and close experience and after waiting 30 plus years to see him then months after a cancelled show I wasn't disappointed.. Of course I wish he played more of my absolute favorites he did give me a real satisfying fix of in my opinion some of his best shit... Although I wish I could hear clearer the banter he exchanged with the crowd or maybe it's cause he was mumbling for he looked like he was semi inebriated well a bit more then semi.. I wasn't disappointed.. Maybe cause I was also more then past semi...and yes I'm referring to my lady boner and party lubricants combo .. Worth the money.. The wait... The exhaustion felt next day after the hype wore off and life resumed

As the drums from The Queen is Dead sounded, I knew this was going to be a fantastic night! 'Hello Manchester!' And the night kicked off with Suedehead. Morrissey was on fine form, his vocals were perfect and of course the Mozza charm you expect to hear! There was a large array of Morrisseys solo work including 2 Smiths tracks, one of them was the harrowingly brilliant Meat is Murder sending chills down the spine as Moz bellowed out the powerful lyrics.' 'I can see you are all tired.....so we will stay!! Until you wake up.' From Suedehead to Irish Blood, English heart it was a brilliant night and I wish I could do it all again!

With the health problems and age of Morrisse,y I have to confess I wasn't expecting much. But a legend is a legend and to have a chance to see him I wasn't going to turn down. What happened was far far more than I ever hoped, as Morrissey controlled the stage and crowd like a ringmaster. His voice was strong and group very solid with a great sound. The songs were a mix of old and new with only one that didn't please the crowd was meat is murder which was more about the images shown than the music. Morrissey made predictable references to bullfighting which went down well. IMO this was an excellent show and pleasure to be at.

Morrissey, fresh off a Las Vegas residency at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, is headed all over North America.

The former Smiths frontman will tour from Nov. 11 through Dec. 4 as part of his “An Evening With Morrissey” concert series.

That includes Morrissey evenings at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre on Nov. 30 and Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center on Dec. 1.

Morrissey announces full dates and venues for 2022 UK tour

Morrissey has shared full details of dates and venues for his forthcoming UK tour.

Last week, the former Smiths star announced nine forthcoming shows in Blackpool, Doncaster, Glasgow, Stockton, Manchester, Birmingham, London and Brighton along with his previously announced concert in Ireland .

Now, he has given a further update on the tour on his Instagram page. The jaunt will see Morrissey kick off the tour at the Gleneagles INEC Arena in Killarney on September 24 before wrapping up at Brighton Centre on October 14.

The tour will also include two London dates at the capital’s Coliseum and the O2 Academy Brixton on October 9 and 11. Ticket details are yet to be announced but you can view the full list of tour dates below.

Morrissey’s last UK date was at London’s SSE Arena, Wembley in March 2020.

Last month, the former Smiths man said that songs from his long-mooted fourteenth solo album ‘Bonfire Of Teenagers’ will be given their debut at his forthcoming Las Vegas residency . A  post  on his website said: “The Morrissey concerts in Las Vegas in July will showcase songs from the album ‘Bonfire Of Teenagers’, which was recorded in January 2021.”

A statement from the former Smiths frontman himself added: “The thrill of this album was the speed under which it was recorded. Considering the knots of grief I had experience [sic] at the time, it made ‘Bonfire’ an incredible achievement for me.”

Morrissey will play a residency titled ‘Viva Moz Vegas’ at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on July 1, 2, 6, 7, and 9. For more info and tickets, click here .

It has been almost a year since he announced ‘Bonfire Of Teenagers’, his first album since leaving his former label BMG . Last May, he said it would be “sold to the highest bidder,” however details of a label and firm release date are yet to emerge.

Morrissey, Blondie, Devo, Bauhaus Set for 2022 Cruel World Festival

Morrissey , Blondie , Bauhaus and Devo are among the artists that will perform at Pasadena, California’s rescheduled Cruel World Festival, now set for May 14th, 2022 at Brookside at the Rose Bowl. (Organizers announced a second show set for May 15th due to popular demand, with tickets on sale June 30th at noon.)

The single-day fest will also feature Psychedelic Furs, Violent Femmes, Echo & the Bunnymen, English Beat, Public Image Ltd., Berlin, Missing Persons, Christian Death, the Damned, the Church, and more. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, June 11th at 12:00 PM PST; check out the festival’s site for more ticket information.

The lineup for the 2022 Cruel World Festival largely keeps the artists tabbed for the inaugural 2020 fest — which was canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic — intact; only Gary Numan and Marc Almond have dropped off the bill and punk pioneers the Damned have been added to the lineup. The site of the festival has also changed, from Los Angeles’ Grounds at Dignity Health Sports Park to the Pasadena venue.

Devo’s Gerald Casale said in a statement to Rolling Stone , “The promoters of Cruel World 2020 were indeed prescient with their festival’s title. Covid-19 unleashed a world of pain and put their bucket list line-up of influential artists on ice. In May of 2022 that ice will finally thaw and Devo will be honored to be part of it all.”

English singer morrissey plots out fall 2024 tour with stop in dallas.

Morrissey will play at the Music Hall at Fair Park on November 2.

Enigmatic English rock singer Morrissey will play his first show in Dallas in five years as part of a fall 2024 tour, stopping at the Music Hall at Fair Park on Saturday, November 2.

The 14-city tour, which follows a recent four-show residency in Las Vegas, will start with two Texas shows: Houston on October 31 followed by Dallas. The tour will go through November 23.

At least, that's what the tour release says. Morrissey is known for his propensity to cancel tours. According to We Heart Music, he's canceled a number of tour dates over the years, due to a variety of factors ranging from exhaustion to mismanagement of tour funds.

Regarded as one of the most influential figures in British pop, Morrissey released four albums as lead singer of The Smiths in the 1980s before going on to release 13 solo studio albums, most recently I Am Not a Dog on a Chain in 2020.

Two other albums that were announced in recent years - Without Music the World Dies and Bonfire of Teenagers - have yet to be released, although the latter is said to be "forthcoming."

A longtime advocate of vegetarianism/veganism, Morrissey recently received a 2024 Social Vanguard Award in recognition for his "outstanding service and dedication to animal rights."

A presale for tickets will be held on Tuesday, August 6 at 10 am local time to members of the Morrissey e-mail & SMS list . The general on sale begins on Friday, August 9 at 10 am local time.

History of Omsk

Foundation of omsk.

The need to build a Russian fortress on the banks of the Irtysh at the mouth of the Om River arose in connection with the steppe nomadic peoples. In particular, with the Oirats, whose tribes in the first decades of the 17th century began to appear within the borders of the Russian state being under the onslaught of their external enemies and as a result of internal civil strife. However, various foreign and domestic political problems of Russia hindered the development and defense of the South Siberian borders.

The situation changed only at the beginning of the 18th century, when the Russian conquest of Siberia intensified. Since Peter I paid great attention to geographical research in the south, the expeditions of that time combined socio-political tasks and tasks of scientific research.

One of such expeditions was led by the Russian military and statesman, associate of Peter I, Major General Ivan Bukhgolts. The goals of the expedition, numbering about 3,000 people, were to search for ore and gold deposits, the discovery of trade routes to India and China, as well as the construction of towns on the Irtysh River.

The expedition left Tobolsk to the south along the Irtysh in July 1715. In the spring of 1716, after a conflict with the Dzungars in the north of today’s Kazakhstan, the remnants of the expedition (about 700 people) withdrew to the mouth of the Om River, where they laid a new fortress named Omsky ostrog (fortified settlement).

According to the census of 1725, 992 people lived in the fortress, in 1742 - 1,092 people. From the first years of its existence, it served as a place of exile for prisoners. After serving hard labor and imprisonment, a lot of them stayed in Omsk for permanent residence.

Omsk in the second half of the 18th century

The ethnic composition of the region’s population was formed in the process of settling the territory. Russians, Germans, Ukrainians, Poles, Belarusians, and representatives of many other nationalities were sent here to serve or were exiled. The indigenous people of the region were the Siberian Tatars and Kazakhs, who switched to a sedentary lifestyle.

The foundation of the second Omsk fortress took place in 1762. The first fortress, although it occupied a favorable geographical position, was wooden and, by the middle of the 18th century, it was dilapidated. In 1765, new stone fortifications were constructed. The first stone structure of the fortress was the Resurrection Military Cathedral, built in 1773 and preserved to this day.

In the end of the 18th century, the Omsk fortress was one of the largest structures in the eastern part of the Russian Empire, its area was more than 30 hectares. In 1782, it was transformed into a town named Omsk within the Tobolsk Governorate. In 1785, the coat of arms of Omsk was approved.

Omsk became the center of management of the Siberian transport routes and the Siberian Cossack army, which not only guarded the South Siberian borders, but also made a huge contribution to the economic development of the steppe expanses of Kazakhstan, the annexation of Central Asia to the Russian Empire.

Omsk in the 19th century

The fire of 1819 destroyed almost half of the town including the archive and the magistrate of Omsk with all the first archival documents. Therefore information about the life of Omsk in the 18th - early 19th centuries is scarce and fragmentary. In 1825, the population of the town was about 9,000 people.

In 1829, the town’s development plan was approved. It was made by the famous Petersburg architect V.I. Geste, who took the city of St. Petersburg as a model with its wide avenues, huge neighborhoods, fountains, cast-iron bridges, and an abundance of green spaces.

The composition of the population of Omsk was not quite usual. In the middle of the 19th century, since Omsk was the center of the military and civil administration, the proportion of the military in the local population reached about 60%.

Fyodor Dostoevsky (one of the greatest psychological novelists in world literature), who served a term of hard labor in the Omsk prison in 1850-1854, in a letter to his brother gave Omsk the following description: “Omsk is a disgusting town. There are almost no trees. In summer, heat and wind with sand, in winter, a snowstorm. I have not seen nature. The town is dirty, military and highly depraved.”

By the second half of the 19th century, Omsk in its development outstripped many steppe towns and became not only an administrative, but also a commercial and industrial center. In 1861, in Omsk, there were 2,122 houses (31 stone houses), 34 factories and plants, about 20 thousand residents.

In 1892, the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway began, which gave a new impetus to the economy of Siberian towns and positively influenced Omsk. The development of the Trans-Siberian Railway caused an increase in the urban population due to migrants who came to work from the central part of the Russian Empire. According to the 1897 census, 37.3 thousand people lived in Omsk. The town had 14 streets with a total length of more than 140 km and 13 squares.

Omsk in the first half of the 20th century

The beginning of the 20th century was a time of great changes for Siberia. Mass peasant colonization caused a sharp leap in the development of the region’s economy, primarily its agrarian sector, and the Trans-Siberian Railway ensured the inclusion of the local economy in the system of the All-Russian and European markets.

Due to its favorable economic and geographical position - at the intersection of the railway and the Irtysh River, in the middle of a vast agricultural territory - Omsk quickly turned into a large transport, trade and industrial center of Western Siberia and Governor-Generalship of the Steppes (Eastern and Central Kazakhstan).

Wholesale trade in bread, butter and other agricultural products was concentrated here. Omsk also became one of the industrial, social and cultural centers of Western Siberia. By 1903, the city’s population grew to 60 thousand people. In 1914, it had about 134.8 thousand residents. Omsk became the most populous city in Siberia.

During the Civil War on the territory of the former Russian Empire, from June 1918 to November 1919, Omsk was the residence of the Supreme Ruler of Russia, Admiral Alexander Kolchak, who declared this city the capital of white Russia opposing red Russia of the Bolsheviks. Soviet power was finally established in the city in 1920.

In the summer of 1921, an event took place that had a decisive impact on the cultural and economic life of Omsk. The functions of the administrative center of Siberia were transferred from it to the city of Novonikolaevsk (future Novosibirsk). In 1934, Omsk became the administrative center of a separate Omsk Oblast.

Over the years of industrialization, Omsk became one of the largest centers for agricultural engineering in the USSR. The metal-working industry also developed at a rapid pace. In 1939, Omsk numbered more than 288 thousand people.

During the Second World War, about 200 industrial enterprises were evacuated to Omsk, as well as 60 hospitals, dozens of educational institutions, theaters, museums, and hundreds of thousands of refugees.

In the post-war years, new enterprises were put into operation in Omsk, all existing factories and plants were reconstructed and expanded. The industrial potential of the city was also strengthened by the Omsk oil refinery, the largest in the country. In connection with the rapid development of industry, especially petrochemical enterprises, the ecological situation deteriorated. The concentration of harmful substances in the air sharply increased. In 1964, the population of Omsk was about 702 thousand people.

In the 1970s-1980s, Omsk developed rapidly. In 1975, the city’s population exceeded 1 million. The most pressing problem was the ecological situation. Omsk was in the top 10 cities of Russia in terms of environmental pollution. Another problem that required an immediate solution was the development of passenger transport. The capacity of Omsk streets was exhausted, and therefore the construction of the subway became an urgent issue.

The economic crisis that gripped Russia after the collapse of the USSR had a negative impact on the economy of Omsk and the region as a whole. There was a significant decline in industrial production, construction volumes fell, and unemployment rose. A lot of organizations of the defense complex, research institutes, and design bureaus found themselves in a deep crisis without the state defense order.

The share of mechanical engineering and metalworking, light industry, and, to a lesser extent, chemical and petrochemical, forestry and woodworking industries decreased. At the same time, the share of the fuel industry, energy, and construction materials industry began to grow.

In the 2000s, Omsk again became one of the most important economic centers of Western Siberia with a developing mechanical engineering, petrochemical industry, various branches of the woodworking, construction industry, and a highly productive agro-industrial complex. In recent years, Omsk has also acquired the features of one of the largest Siberian centers of entrepreneurship and banking/financial activities.

Omsk is located in the south of the West Siberian Plain at the confluence of the Om River into the Irtysh, about 150 km from the border of Russia with Kazakhstan. About 60% of all residents of Omsk Oblast live in Omsk. The City Day of Omsk is celebrated on the first Saturday of August.

The city’s coat of arms is very similar to the first coat of arms of Omsk approved by Empress Catherine II in 1785. It depicts a part of the brick fortifications, which symbolizes the reason for its foundation as a fortress and the center of the Siberian defensive line.

Omsk belongs to the temperate climatic zone with a continental climate of the forest-steppe of the West Siberian belt. It is distinguished by an abundance of sunlight. The average air temperature in January is minus 16.3 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19.6 degrees Celsius. The highest wind speeds are observed in winter and spring, which is the reason for frequent snow and dust storms.

In the past, the ecological situation in Omsk was very unfavorable. Since 2011, the city’s environmental development rating has increased significantly. This was the result of large-scale modernization of many large industries (including the Omsk oil refinery). Today, road transport is the main source of air pollution in the city.

The level of pollution of the Omsk rivers - Irtysh and Om - remains consistently high. Swimming in them is prohibited. While industrial effluents are becoming more environmentally friendly, sewers are releasing waste products including diesel fuel and petroleum products into the rivers. Dust raised by dust storms is also a serious problem for the city as it contains a lot of harmful substances including lead.

The city’s industry is based on oil refining, petrochemistry, chemical industry, mechanical engineering (production of aerospace equipment, armored vehicles, agricultural equipment). Omsk is a major transport junction - the Trans-Siberian Railway runs through the city from west to east, and the navigable Irtysh River crosses it from south to north. Omsk Airport offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Surgut, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Salekhard, Kazan, Krasnodar, Sochi.

The unfinished subway of Omsk has become famous in Russia thanks to its only one fully built station. Its construction began back in 1992. However, due to funding problems, the completion of the first line was postponed numerous times. In 2019, it was finally decided to permanently stop construction. For local residents, because of the long wait for the completion of the construction, the Omsk metro symbolizes unrealizable hopes, they talk about it with irony.

In Omsk, there are practically no buildings higher than 50 meters, according to this parameter it is one of the lowest cities with a population of over one million. 130 architectural monuments are concentrated in the central part of the city, almost half of the total number.

Main Attractions of Omsk

Dormition Cathedral - the largest church in Omsk located in the very center of the city. The original church was built in 1891-1898. In 1935, it was completely destroyed. In 2005-2007, an exact copy of the building was restored in its original place. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in Omsk. At night, the building is illuminated and looks especially majestic. Tarskaya Street, 7.

Irtysh Embankment - the main walking street of Omsk with a picturesque view of the Irtysh River. Built in the middle of the 20th century, the embankment was reconstructed in the 2000s. You can walk along the alley on foot, ride rollerblades or a bike.

Merchant Batyushkin’s Mansion (1902). This architectural monument is located on the Irtysh Embankment. It is also known as the Kolchak’s House because Alexander Kolchak, the Supreme Ruler of Russia, lived in this building in 1919. One part of the building is occupied by the registry office of the Central District of Omsk. The Center for the Study of the History of the Russian Civil War is also open here. Omsk State Museum of History and Local Lore - one of the oldest museums in Siberia and Russia founded in 1878. In total, this museum has over 200 thousand various objects of cultural, historical and artistic value. The museum is especially proud of such exhibits as the cast-iron figures of the Chinese lions Shi-Tzu, presented to the museum from China in 1895, as well as the skeleton of a woolly mammoth almost 3 meters high. Omsk Regional Museum of Fine Arts named after M.A. Vrubel - one of the largest museums of fine arts in Siberia. It has collections of foreign and Russian art from antiquity to the present day. In total, there are over 22 thousand works by painters, graphic artists and sculptors, as well as more than 1.5 thousand rare folios.

Walking through the exhibition halls, you can admire the canvases of Shishkin, Aivazovsky, Surikov, Repin, Serov, Vereshchagin. The exhibition of rare icons dating from the 17th-20th centuries is of constant interest among visitors, as well as a unique collection of jewelry made of precious metals found in the Scythian and Sarmatian burial mounds. Two buildings of the museum are located at Lenina Street 3 and 23.

In November 2019, a new exhibition was opened in a historical building at Muzeynaya Street, 4 - the exhibition of art of the 20th-21st centuries. The Hermitage-Siberia Center is located here too - the first representation of The State Hermitage Museum (the second-largest art museum in the world) beyond the Urals.

Chokana Valikhanova Street - a pedestrian street located in the historic part of Omsk. The street is decorated with abstract architectural forms, flower beds, wrought-iron lanterns. The walking area ends with an observation deck with a picturesque view of the Irtysh River.

Museum of Kondraty Belov . The museum of this landscape painter born in Omsk can be found in a picturesque wooden house, which is considered one of the most interesting architectural monuments of Omsk. The exposition tells about the life and work of Kondraty Belov, as well as about the history of the building itself.

In total, this museum has about 700 exhibits. The permanent exhibition also includes works by Kondraty Belov’s son Stanislav and paintings by some other local artists. In addition, temporary exhibitions of contemporary Omsk artists are regularly held here. Chokana Valikhanova Street, 10.

Plumber Stepanych Monument - an unusual sculpture located in the center of Omsk, which you can literally stumble upon while walking along Lenin Street between the houses #12 and #14. Leaning out of the hatch, the plumber is depicted as realistic and life-size as possible. It is among the most photographed monuments in Omsk. There is a similar sculpture in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

Lyuba Monument . This sculpture, located on the opposite side of Lenin Street from the monument to the plumber Stepanych, is especially loved by Omsk residents and tourists, who love to be photographed against its background.

This beauty in a lace dress with a neckline and a crinoline sitting on an openwork bench and reading a novel had a real prototype - Lyubov (diminutively Lyuba or Lyubasha) Gasford, the wife of the Governor-General of Siberia, who lived in Omsk in the 19th century and died at a young age due to illness. One of the streets of Omsk and the park are named in her memory. She is a local symbol of femininity and beauty.

Omsk Fire Tower - a picturesque architectural monument built at the beginning of the 20th century. Inside the tower there are museum expositions dedicated to the local fire brigade and the history of tower construction. Internatsionalnaya Street, 41?.

Park of Culture and Rest named after the 30th anniversary of the Komsomol - a popular place for walks, recreation and entertainment of Omsk residents and tourists, which has retained “the spirit of the Soviet era” in its name. Today, on an area of 73 hectares, several zones have been organized, various types of recreation are presented. There are walking alleys, ponds, water activities, for example, riding on hydro-scooters.

The ice town is open in winter, the Return of the Dinosaurs exhibition - in summer. The “House Upside Down” exposition is also popular with tourists. This park is a place for mass festivities, city celebrations and events. Maslenitsa, Christmas, City Day, and other holidays are celebrated here. Maslennikova Street, 136.

Natural Park “Bird Harbor” - a specially protected area located on the path of bird migration in the central part of Omsk. During autumn flights, up to 3 thousand birds stop here for rest. It is a great place to enjoy nature, walk along the eco-trail, and observe the life of birds. The park is situated in the floodplain on the left bank of the Irtysh River next to the Victory Park on Yeniseyskaya Street.
