Talking to the guides joel and kate about the area, watching the dress up and having sword fights was my favourite part and the views were awesome – brilliant tour would have given it 7 stars if i could – thanks for the great time..

R Waugh, Tripadvisor

“Fantastic tour! Our guide picked us up from our hotel and made us feel at home immediately, James is a very entertaining guy full of heaps of info, enjoyed every moment with him. The tour and scenery is breathtaking it makes you remember parts of the movie and you can picture the scenes right where you’re standing. Dressing up in the costumes was great fun. Thank you James for a wonderful tour and for being a great host!”

Miranda, Australia

“Well worth the time. Our guides were well versed in the geography of the Lord of the Rings and were able to put what we saw into context. The natural beauty seen on the trip was an added bonus. 5 stars!”

Michael, TripAdvisor

“Thank you for taking our little group of six on an adventure. Being Lord of the Ring’s enthusiasts it was wonderful being part of where a lot of the scenes took place. As soon as I get home I am watching it again just knowing I was there. Loved getting dressed as Gandalf. Thank you for helping me personally as it was a little difficult for me to get around.”

Mary, Sydney

“Booked last minute with my partner and we had a GREAT time! Very knowledgable on LOTR and New Zealand landscape, culture etc. I recommend taking this tour even if you are not a huge LOTR fan since it is a smaller group, but the guides can answer any questions you have, so be ready to nerd out if you want to 🙂 ”

mnovasel, TripAdvisor

“Queenstown based tours are more heavenly than one can imagine. On the way to Glenorchy we come across the million dollar scene of the mountains and the blue water lake. You can spend a whole day photographing in Glenorchy. As we go to explore the various spots where Lord of the Rings was shot you get to reach Paradise too, a truely remarkable spot aptly named so. Overall experience was excellent.”

The Shire Killarney: The First Lord Of The Rings Themed Pub In Ireland

By Author Keith O'Hara

Posted on Last updated: January 5, 2023

The Shire Killarney: The First Lord Of The Rings Themed Pub In Ireland

Yes, the Shire in Killarney is the first Lord of the Rings themed pub in Ireland.

And it’s also home to a cafe (where you’ll get some of the best breakfast in Killarney ) and some very quirky accommodation.

We get emails about the Shire pub in Killarney every few weeks – mainly from American tourists. Emails like this one:

The Shire Pub

OK, most people don’t mix up ‘Killarney’ with ‘Kilkenny’, but you get the picture.

Here’s everything you need to know about what is hands down the most unique of the  many brilliant pubs in Killarney .

Welcome to the Shire in Killarney

Shire Killarney

Photo via the Shire Killarney on FB

There’s been a Lord of the Ring’s themed pub in Killarney since way back in 2014.

Now, if you’re not familiar with the Lord Of The Rings series, the Shire is the homeland of the Hobbits in the Northwest of Middle Earth.

In the town of Killarney, there’s a slightly different Shire, located up on Michael Collins Place.

The Shire Pub: Ireland’s first Lord of the Rings themed pub

Lord of the rings bar kerry

You enter the pub via a Hobbit hole that leads to a little bar called ‘the Inn of the Prancing Pony’.

Here, you can order a selection of Lord of the Rings themed beers, shots, and cocktails from staff donning Hobbit gear.

I was here a few years back and there was a lad dressed as Gollum legging about the place, so keep an eye out or he’ll shneak up on you.

There are also heaps of LOTR bits and bobs hanging up around the bar that you can have a nosey at while you nurse your pint.

The Shire Cafe

Shire Cafe Killarney

You’ll see the Shire sitting proudly on many guides to the best restaurants in Killarney . Now, it isn’t really a restaurant – it’s more of a cafe – but the stuff they pop-out is seriously tasty.

It’s also pretty good value, too. The Irish Breakfast (2 bacon, 2 sausages, 1 egg (fried or poached), black & white pudding, served with toast 1,3) is a very reasonable €8.

Which, when you consider how much some places in Killarney charge, is pretty damn good.

The Shire Accommodation

Shire Killarney Accommodation

I only realised that these lads had opened up a guesthouse when we were writing our Killarney accommodation guide.

When I went in to check how much a night here would cost, I was expecting to see mental prices, as the accommodation couldn’t be more central in Killarney Town.

I whacked in a Friday night in October for 2 people. Here’s what came up (prices may change!):

  • A private room (sleeps 2): €30.00
  • 4 person dorm: €48.00

That’s ridiculously good value for Killarney (check out our guide to the best Bed and Breakfast in Killarney for more reasonably priced accommodation).

Stay in the Shire at this Lord of the Rings themed bar and hotel in Ireland

The shire in killarney is just precious.

The Shire, Killarney

The Shire, a Lord of the Rings inspired bar, cafe, and hotel in Killarney, Ireland, is an absolute must for LOTR fans.

Middle Earth may be impossible to reach and New Zealand, where the Lord of the Rings movies were filmed, is a bit hard to get to, but visitors to Ireland can get the full LOTR travel experience in the lovely town of Killarney in County Kerry.

Already an immensely popular tourist attraction in its own right, Killarney is also home to The Shire cafe, bar, and hotel - a hobbit experience like none other.

The Shire was founded in 2014 by "Head of the Hobbits" Ollie Flavier.

At the time, he said his idea for The Shire could be traced back to the release of the second and third movies, when he and his brothers, who are of small stature, became known locally as the Hobbits, and their signature cocktail was coined ‘Hobbit-juice.’

This Tolkien fan's paradise now includes a cafe open from 8am - 9:30pm for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; a bar with special Shire beers, cocktails, and shots; and a townhouse for accommodation, where you can book either a private or dorm-style room.

Guests receive a discount at The Shire cafe for breakfast and can enjoy the convenience of staying in the heart of Killarney, the perfect jumping-off point for exploring the town itself in addition to the Killarney Lakelands, Killarney National Park, and the Ring of Kerry.

With traditional Irish music sessions four nights a week and comedy two nights, The Shire bar has hobbit-approved entertainment, too.

Hear The Music Of The Hobbit And Lord Of The Rings With Live Orchestra In Dublin

By olivia fahy.

They're taking the Hobbits to... Dublin? Well, their music at least as fans of the cinematic (and televised) works of JRR Tolkein will be able to hear the familiar tones of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit with a live orchestra in our fair city in 2023.

The music will be performed in a two-hour evening concert with a symphonic orchestra, choir, and some star soloists. There will also feature some original star guests and unique music reaching from the threatening sounds of Mordor and the shrill attack of the black riders to the beautiful lyrical melodies of the elves.

Today's top videos

Story continues below.

The special guest will be William Kircher who played the dwarf Bifur in the Hobbit franchise An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies.

The One Ring in Lord of the Rings

The group bringing the music to life is The Orchestra and Choir of The Shire, who have performed in music halls all over the world, from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to the Konzerthaus in Vienna.

On this tour, they're joined, despite the current situation, by a national Ukrainian State Orchestra, The Academic Khmelnitsky Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.

Created in 2001 and led by chief conductor and Honored Art Worker of Ukraine Sergiy Leonov, the orchestra has won the hearts of many listeners of classical music.

the hobbit creature

It is often praised for its coherence and balanced sound and known for its successful cooperation with the leading conductors and soloists from Ukraine and abroad.

The orchestra comes from western Ukraine and performs a wide repertoire from different musical eras, with a special focus on Ukrainian composers.

Some of the music being performed will include the iconic score by Howard Shore, songs by Annie Lennox, Enya and Ed Sheeran, and will even feature some music from the Prime Video series The Rings of Power .

The event will take place in Dublin's Bord Gais Energy Theatre for one night only, on April 10, 2023, and tickets start at €21.50.

The Lord of the Rings and Ireland.

The Lord of the Rings and Ireland

JRR Tolkien is said to have been seduced by the karst landscapes of the Burren

Tolkien based his work on the tuatha de danann, characters from irish mythology..

How? Does The Lord of the Rings have a close connection with Ireland? Incredible as it may seem, it’s true. Although Peter Jackson’s films are set in beautiful New Zealand, JRR Tolkien ‘s Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion are said to have their roots in Ireland. According to academics specializing in the author, Tolkien drew inspiration from the Burren region (Co. Clare), as well as Irish legends, to propel his story… Theory or fact? Find out more here!

So yes, we already know what you’re going to tell us… The Lord of the Rings has nothing to do with Ireland… It’s just a pretext to make the most of a country for tourism purposes…

But we can assure you that Dr. Liam Campbell, an eminent academic at the University of Milwaukee and a specialist in Tolkien’s work, is unequivocal. There are many connections between The Lord of the Rings and Ireland.

The latter presented his findings at the Burren Tolkien Society Festival, an Irish event celebrating Tolkien’s work. And his arguments are convincing.

For Dr Campbell, Senior Lecturer in English Literature, Language and Creative Writing at the University of Ulster and North West Regional College, things are clear:

An unexpected body of evidence is beginning to emerge. They unmask Ireland and, in particular, the Burren as a significant influence on Tolkien’s creative imagination.

Tuatha Dé Danann - Nationalmuseet - cc

Tuatha Dé Danann – Nationalmuseet – cc

For Campbell, Irish mythology and Irish landscapes are deeply rooted in Tolkien’s original concept for his secondary world of Middle-earth. This theory is all the more substantiated, as JRR Tolkien is said to have visited Ireland regularly during his lifetime… and mainly County Clare, where the Burren lands are located.

The latter is said to have visited the west of Ireland on several occasions, and spent considerable time in the Burren when he held the post of external examiner in the English department of NUI Galway between 1949 and 1959. Strangely enough, it was during this period that he revised and published “The Lord of the Rings”.

A strange coincidence?

My research has shown that some late modifications of The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien himself refer to the Burren . There’s an entire passage that evokes an elevated, rugged landscape, reflecting the Burren in some extremely revealing and specific ways. says Dr. Campbell.

Better still, for the Tolkien scholar, there are also clear parallels between the Tuatha de Danann, Tolkien’s Elves and their lands in the fiction of The Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien was well versed in Celtic mythology, but also in the specificities of the Tuatha de Danann. He even mentioned them to his son Christopher as a founding myth inspiring certain aspects of his fiction. This also applies to the great wars between the Tuatha and the Formorians… If we add all this to the fact that Tolkien often took a sketchbook with him and actually created detailed drawings and even watercolors of the Irish landscape, we certainly have something remarkable here.

It’s a nice theory, and one that continues to fuel speculation among the author’s fans. Many people like to compare Middle-earth to County Clare, renowned for its verdant landscapes and warm inhabitants.

All the more reason for the Irish to be proud of their heritage!

On location in Middle-earth: the best sites for touring the Lord of the Rings

New Zealand’s soaring mountains, temperate rainforests and remote river valleys all fueled Sir Peter Jackson’s creative spirit when he was crafting the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film trilogies.

Journey through Middle-earth in the southern hemisphere to discover spectacular locations for some of history’s highest-grossing movies, and because this is New Zealand – population just five million – don’t be surprised if a few of your authoritative guides have personal stories of being extras and actually working on the films.

New Zealand's North Island

No scenes from the Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit were filmed around Auckland, but before leaving New Zealand's biggest city to head south, spend a morning at Weta Workshop Unleashed . Special effects magic from the Wellington-based studio that brought to life both trilogies is showcased in immersive 90-minute experiences exploring three exciting cinematic genres. Of most interest to fans of Middle-earth is how a fantasy epic – including scripts, storyboards and digital world-building – is crafted seamlessly for an exciting movie-making experience.

Hobbit holes and hobbit gardens in Hobbiton Movie Set, New Zealand.

Secreted amid the rolling pastures of the Waikato region, the Hobbiton Movie Set is the most popular of New Zealand's Tolkien-inspired destinations. Guided walking tours explore a leafy hillside dotted with 44 colorful hobbit holes, actually dismantled after filming was completed on Lord of the Rings , but then rebuilt for The Hobbit . Tours of the Shire conclude with a drink at the lakeside Green Dragon Inn, and special Evening Banquet and Second Breakfast experiences are also on offer. If you're driving, park your car near the Middle-earth-inspired i-SITE information center in nearby Matamata, and catch Hobbiton's complimentary bus to the site. Don't forget to grab a selfie with the statue of Gollum in Matamata's main street. Day tours to Hobbiton from Auckland can be booked with Bush & Beach .

Two hours drive southwest of Hobbiton, the rural district of Pio Pio is the location for Hairy Feet Waitomo . The farm’s rugged scenery, especially the craggy limestone profile of Denize Bluffs featured significantly in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey , and owners Warrick and Suzie Denize have plenty of stories about what it was like to have Sir Peter Jackson and his team on location for eight months. Booking tours ahead by email is essential.

Tongariro National Park

One of three active volcanoes punctuating the rugged Central Plateau of New Zealand's North Island, Mt Ngauruhoe's cinematic claim to fame is its role as Mordor's Mt Doom. For excellent views of the mountain's conical profile, embark on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing . Renowned as one of the world's best one-day hikes, the 19.4km (12-mile) adventure skirts the northern slopes of the mountain. Much less strenuous is combining high tea and Mt Ngauruhoe views at the historic Chateau Tongariro Hotel.

Continue Middle-earth meanderings in New Zealand's compact harborside capital, first visiting Weta Workshop to learn more special effects wizardry behind Sir Peter’s two blockbusting trilogies, and then embarking on a tour of film locations around the city. Capital Tours' full-day Lord of the Rings tour includes Wellington's Mt Victoria – the Outer Shire in the Lord of the Rings – and also a visit to Weta Workshop. Other tour highlights include exploring the Hutt Valley, incorporating the movie locations for Helms Deep (The Two Towers) and the Gardens of Isengard (The Fellowship of the Ring) . A final tour destination is nearby at Kaitoke Regional Park. A replica elvish archway celebrates the riverside's starring role as Rivendell in The Fellowship of the Ring , and information boards showcase Middle-earth movie memories. Another Wellington film location worth exploring is the Putangirua Pinnacles Scenic Reserve two hours southeast of the city on Cape Palliser. The otherworldly, wind- and rain-eroded landscape was featured as the foreboding Dimholt Road in The Return of the King .

New Zealand's South Island

There are two highlights for Tolkien travelers in and around the regional South Island city of Nelson. Local jeweler Jens Hansen designed the original One Ring for the Lord of the Rings , and his family’s business now sells replicas of the Ring, and wedding and engagement rings inscribed with elvish calligraphy. One hour east of Nelson, the Pelorus River was the location of the barrel-riding scene in The Desolation of Smaug , and is a brilliant spot for kayaking. Havelock-based Pelorus Eco Adventures offer a Hobbit Kayak Tour exploring this location known as Forest River in the film.

mount cook viewpoint with the lake pukaki and the road leading to Aoraki. Taken during summer in New Zealand.

For The Two Towers , director Sir Peter Jackson and his team transformed Canterbury’s Mt Sunday into Edora, the capital of Rohan.  It’s a drive of around three hours west of Christchurch to Mt Sunday, located in the Hakatere Conservation Park, and the Department of Conservation-run Mt Sunday Track is a good 1.5km (.93-mile) return hike to the top of the squat peak. The area can also be visited on guided tours from Christchurch with Hassle Free Tours . Full-day 4WD  tours also take in the Misty Mountains, location of the Helms Deep battle scene in The Twin Towers.

Also in Canterbury, just south of the glacial turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki, is the Pelennor Fields, the location of the climactic battle in The Return of the King . The tussocky plateau is visited by Red Carpet Tours as part of multi-day New Zealand itineraries exploring Lord of the Rings and Hobbit locations across both the North and the South Island. Red Carpet’s 14-day tour is the ultimate Middle-earth adventure for traveling Tolkien fans.

Southern Lakes

New Zealand’s spectacular Southern Lakes region is where many scenes for both trilogies were filmed, and the area features some of the country’s most experienced Tolkien-focused tour operators.

Based in Queenstown, Nomad Safaris offer exciting experiences combining offroad 4WD adventures with Middle-earth locations including the Misty Mountains and the Kawarau river setting for the Pillars of the Kings (both from The Fellowship of the King ). Across the Crown Range in Wanaka, Eco Wanaka Adventures’ Misty Mountain Heli Hike experience gets travelers up high in Mount Aspiring National Park for views of multiple trilogy locations, while a flight with Queenstown-based Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters could see visitors flying with Alfie Speight, the principal film pilot for both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

Cruising high above locations including Lake Alta (Dimrill Dale) and Skippers Canyon (the Ford of Bruinen), both featured in The Fellowship of the Ring , Alfie’s the ideal guide to Southern Lakes’ Hollywood stardom, as he’s also worked on X Men Origins: Wolverine, Mission Impossible, King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia .

A final Southern Lakes destination for Middle-earth fans is the village of Glenorchy at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu. Pure Glenorchy offers tours exploring the Dart River Valley and Mt Aspiring National Park with film locations including Paradise (Lothlorien Forest in The Fellowship of the Ring ), and Twelve Mile Delta on Lake Wakatipu (Ithilien in The Return of the King ). Pure Glenorchy also has exclusive access to Arcadia Station in the Paradise Valley, a private location where Beorn’s house was built for The Desolation of Smaug in the Hobbit trilogy. For movie-making completists, other Lord of the Rings scenes and sequences from X Men Origins: Wolverine and The Chronicles of Narnia were also filmed at Arcadia Station.

Queenstown-based Lord of the Rings Tours also offer a range of experiences around Queenstown, Wanaka and Glenorchy, as well as adventures further north to Mt Sunday and Edoras.

Our first day ends with a night in West Cork’s stunning harbour town of Kinsale. Kinsale is renowned for its award-winning restaurants and dramatic scenery. Seafood lovers will be spoilt for choice.

Have our local friend Barry show you around this town known for its castles, forts, galleries, shops, and arts & crafts.

Day 2: From Kinsale to Kenmare to Killarney National Park, to Dingle

Total Driving time: 3 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

Our route out of Kinsale will bring us towards the Ring of Kerry. (For the full Ring of Kerry please see our Ireland to Island Tour ) Our first stop is the beautiful heritage town of Kenmare.

Our visit to Killarney National Park includes stops at stunning overlooks like Molls’ Gap and Ladies’ View before a tour of Ross Castle where you will discover what life was really like behind the stone walls. Let a guide bring these castle stories to life!

The day ends in the celebrated, cosy coastal town of Dingle. The evening is yours to experience the atmosphere in Dingle’s famous quirky pubs, and fantastic restaurants, and to stumble across unforgettable traditional music sessions.

Day 3: From Dingle to Slea head

Total driving time: 2 hours, excluding stops

A special start to the morning as we adventure out on an optional kayaking adventure around Dingle Bay to explore the sea caves. If kayaking is not your thing, we will take you on a walk up to Eask Tower where you will be rewarded with views of the Great Atlantic on either side of the Dingle Peninsula.

And if some retail therapy is what you’re after, you can also choose to take some time out and visit the local shops. It’s your holiday, do it your way!

Your expert local guide will take you on a breath-taking trip along the Slea Head Drive — expect amazing scenery, beehive huts, and beautiful harbours for those all-important Instagram photos.

Spend a second evening really getting to know Dingle and find more hot- spots for food and entertainment. The best thing is you do not have to re- pack your bags. Just relax and enjoy!

Day 4: From Dingle to County Clare

Your Ultimate Irish Experience continues as we leave Dingle and travel north, taking in spectacular views of The Connor Pass and Castlegregory along the way.

Prepare to be awestruck at a traditional sheepdog demonstration. The skill of the farmer and his furry friend will leave you flabbergasted. This is one of our guest’s favourite experiences on tour.

Next, we take the short ferry ride to County Clare, home of the world-famous Cliffs of Moher and take in the Burren National Park.

From sheepdog demonstrations in Co.Kerry to the Cliffs of Moher, we are spoiled for natural beauty. The cliffs in their wonder, need to be seen to be appreciated and a guided hike with the roaring Wild Atlantic provides the perfect soundtrack.

Your Overland Ireland guide will take you off the beaten track and point out secret passages that you won’t find on the typical tourist route. Your Insta followers will be green with jealousy when you show off your ‘unfiltered’ photos at this stunning landmark.

Tonight get your dancing shoes on and tap out a few steps in the hometown of traditional Irish music – Doolin. You are in for a treat in the lively bars nestled throughout the most welcoming little village in Ireland.

Day 5: From Doolin to Galway

You will travel through the Burren National Park and take a leisurely drive to Galway. You are in for a treat this morning as we stop for a quick photo-op at the 16th Century Dunguaire Castle in the quaint fishing village of Kinvara.

Glide into Galway and meet one of our local friends for a Walkin’ Talkin’ Tastin’ tour of Galway! Have them point out all their favourite spots while trying traditional Irish cuisine, tasting locally distilled gin and learning about the rich history of Galway.

You’ll have free time this afternoon to try on Claddagh rings, Galway shawls, and pass through The Spanish Arch to take in the famous Claddagh fishing village.

This city is a destination for both tourists and Irish people, where entertainment is always high on the agenda. Its quirky medieval streets are alive with street entertainers and musicians all day. Its historic buildings are now home to many wonderful shops, bars, and restaurants.

Day 6: From Galway to the Aran Islands to Westport

Total driving time: 1 hour 45 minutes, excluding stops

We leave Galway and drive west to Rossaveal Pier along the coast road. From Rossaveal, we will sail across Galway Bay to the Aran Islands. Our destination is the rugged Inishmore which is the largest of the three Aran Islands.

We will explore the island by cycling through its meandering roads. You can also choose a jaunting cart (Horse and Buggy) to bring you along the way. This is an optional added cost that we will be happy to arrange for you.

We will no doubt meet many locals and pick up a few words in “Gaelic” along the way. Our tour of the island will take us to the stone fort of Dún Aengus, which lies 100m over the ocean, before making our way back to the mainland.

We then leave Rossaveal for Ireland’s favourite town – Westport taking in the breathtaking views of Connemara National Park along our route. It’s then time to ease into an unforgettable night in County Mayo. Unwind in Westport with some local craft beers and mouthwatering food. And no trip to Westport is complete without a visit to Matt Molloy’s bar where you can enjoy a traditional Irish music session and some good old ‘Craic – fun’.

Note: The Aran Islands ferry crossings are weather permitting. If it is unsafe to travel we will provide wonderful alternative plans for the group!

Day 7: Westport to The Hills of Donegal

Total driving time: 2 hours 30 minutes, excluding stops

We love showing off Westport town and its gorgeous little shops bursting with nick-nacks, antiques and Irish crafts. This could be the perfect opportunity to do some retail therapy on tour or our friends in Westport will while away the morning with you on a walking tour of the town.

Up north we go travelling through County Sligo and making a wonderful loop of Mullaghmore, taking in Cassiebawn Castle – owned by Lord Mountbatten when he was tragically killed. Here you will begin your education on Northern Irish history and get a great insight into the contrast between the north and south of Ireland.

You are in for a treat. Before settling into the 5-star Lough Eske Castle Hotel and enjoying this luxury experience we will stretch our legs at Glencar’s magnificent waterfall. Donegal’s rugged wild landscape will take your breath away as will the charming locals! You’ll have to retune your ears to understand their sing-song lilt!

Tonight is all about treating yourself on the grounds of the castle and embracing your inner King/Queen at the home of the powerful O’Donnell Clan from the 14th Century.

Day 8: Donegal to Derry

Total driving time: 3 hours, excluding stops

Now it is time to explore the North West: the Hills of Donegal. We continue our Ultimate Tour and embark on a magnificent drive over the Glengesh Pass and the Assaranca Waterfall. Discover remote stunning beaches, hidden caves and amazing views all round.

Continue your exploration of the gorgeous hills of Donegal Hill at the newly established Ardara Distillery. Learn about the tradition of whiskey and even have a taste of what Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw described as “liquid sunshine”.

Our next stop is Derry. Northern Ireland’s second-largest city, which is steeped in rich Irish history. We provide a walking tour of the city, helping visitors to learn about the Troubles. Derry is also here where we will spend the evening. Enjoy the amazing restaurants Derry has on offer.

Day 9: The Giant’s Causeway to Belfast

Today will be both a test of mental strength and a celebration of your soul. The Giant’s Causeway is one of the most anticipated experiences in this small group tour of Ireland and it never disappoints.

The Causeway Coastal Route is breathtaking, to say the least. If you have the nerve, cross the Carrick-a-Rede Rope bridge and feel the exhilarating air beneath your feet.

The opening of the bridge is weather-dependent but we can take a visit to Dunluce Castle and hear great tales of battles fought won and lost in the middle ages.

Game of Thrones fans will have officially landed in their spiritual home as we take a sneak peek at one of its most famous filming locations: The Dark Hedges.

We will finish the day with an enthralling black cab tour of Belfast. This tour is optional but highly recommended. Alternatively, if you just need to take a breath and relax, you can spend some time exploring the city’s coolest pubs, shops, and restaurants.

Day 10: Belfast to Newgrange to Dublin

On this final morning, get ready for the full Titanic experience at Titanic Belfast. Prepare to be moved by the wonderful stories told about the world’s most famous ship.

Last but not least, we will visit the magical stone age passage tomb at Newgrange, richly decorated with neolithic art. On some dates Newgrange is swapped for the amazing ancient ceremonial and burial site: the Hill of Tara.

All good things must come to an end! We will say our fond farewells in Dublin City. If you have some time left in Ireland and would like to spend some time in Dublin your expert guide will arm you with great recommendations for things to see and do in the capital.

Note: To confirm your booking, you are required to pay a non-refundable deposit of €250 per person for Small-Group tours .

The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed entirely in New Zealand. Filming locations spanned more than 150 locations in both the North and the South Islands.

Lord of the Rings locations in the North Island

One of the most popular film locations in New Zealand is found in Matamata.

Hobbiton™ Movie Set, Waikato

By Matt Crawford

The lush dairy farming landscape around the Waikato town of Matamata was used to portray the peaceful Shire region of Middle‑earth™. The   village of Hobbiton  was created here with brilliant attention to detail.

It was later rebuilt for the filming of The Hobbit Trilogy and is now a permanent attraction.

Ruapehu: The Forbidden Pool

Tawhai Falls

Tawhai Falls, Ruapehu

By Graeme Murray

Tawhai Falls (opens in new window) in Tongariro National Park (opens in new window) was the location for the forbidden pool, where Frodo and Faramir capture Gollum in 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers'. The falls can be reached via a short 10-minute walk, which begins roughly 4 km from Whakapapa Village.

Wellington:  Gardens of Isengard, the River Anduin, Rivendell, Osgiliath Wood, Paths of the Dead

The park has an enchanting quality captured perfectly in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Kaitoke Regional Park, Wellington

By JuergenSchulte

The most accessible filming  location in Wellington  is Mount Victoria, which is within walking distance of the central city. The forested areas of the mountain were used to depict Hobbiton Woods, where the hobbits hid from the black riders.

Other Wellington locations include the Hutt River between Moonshine and Tōtara Park, which played the part of the River Anduin; and Harcourt Park, which was transformed into the Gardens of Isengard.

Wellington’s Kaitoke Regional Park  became Rivendell, where Frodo recovered from the knife attack. The exact location - a grassy area surrounded by native forest - is signposted from the carpark.

From Wellington, you can drive up the west coast to Queen Elizabeth Park near Paraparaumu, which was used for filming the Nazgul and mumakil in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Further up the coast is Waitarere Forest (Osgiliath Wood), where Frodo, Sam and Gollum walked after leaving Faramir.

A drive over the hills to the Wairarapa region will take you to the eerie Putangirua Pinnacles, where Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli sought the Paths of the Dead.

Wellington is also home to Wētā Workshop (opens in new window) , Wētā Digital and the Miramar film empire which is central to The Hobbit Trilogy production. While the movie business centre is off-limits to visitors, The Lord of the Rings pilgrims can experience the Wētā Cave.

Locations in the South Island

The sheer drama of the South Island's mountain ranges and wilderness areas means there are dozens of filming locations to visit that are stunning in their own right - even non-movie buffs will enjoy these.

Nelson Tasman:  Home of the 'One Ring', Chetwood Forest and Dimrill Dale

Angelus Lakes, Nelson Lakes National Park

Nelson Lakes National Park, Nelson Tasman

By Active Adventures New Zealand

Nelson Tasman  is home to Jens Hansen, the goldsmith responsible for creating the 40 different rings used in production. One of the original rings is on display and copies can be bought in 9 and 18ct gold.

From Nelson drive west over Takaka Hill, which was the filming site for Chetwood Forest. Here the Ranger 'Strider' led the hobbits into the rough country east of Bree in an attempt to escape the Black Riders.

You'll need to catch a helicopter to see where the fellowship hid from Saruman's black crows. Ask the pilot to show you Dimrill Dale - Mount Olympus and Mount Owen. From the air, you'll get an eagle's view of the region's three national parks - Abel Tasman , Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi .

Canterbury:  Edoras

Mount Sunday was the location for Edoras in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Mount Sunday (Edoras), Christchurch - Canterbury

By PhillipC

Nestled in the Ashburton District's high country sits Mount Sunday - a sheer-sided hill that was the set for Edoras, the main city of the Rohan people. Nothing remains of this set, which took nine months to build, however the location still has powerful magic. You can park your vehicle on Hakatere Potts Road and walk to the site. Nearby, Mount Potts Station offers accommodation and a restaurant.

Mackenzie Country:  Pelennor Fields

The battle of the Pelennor Fields was filmed in Canterbury

Canterbury, Christchurch - Canterbury

By Oisín Duke

Near Twizel in the Mackenzie Country, Peter Jackson filmed the epic battle of the Pelennor Fields, where thousands of orcs bred by Sauron clashed with the men of Gondor and Rohan. The grassy fields that stretch to the foothills of the mountains look exactly as described in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The location is on private land, however you can arrange a tour in the town of Twizel .

Southern Lakes:  Ford of Bruinen, Gandalf’s ride, Isengard and Lothlorien

An inspiring Lord of the Rings Trilogy valley in the Mount Aspiring National Park.

Mount Aspiring National Park, Wānaka

By Gilbert van Reenen

From the  village of Glenorchy , at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, you can see the north-western slopes of Mount Earnslaw, which featured in the opening sequence of The Two Towers. From Glenorchy, you can also discover Lothlorien - the beech forest on the road to Paradise.

Another memorable location can be found near Queenstown at Arrowtown where you can walk to the Ford of Bruinen on the Arrow River; you can also walk to Wilcox Green, where the Gladden Fields scenes were filmed.

From Chard Farm winery you can see a spectacular view of the Anduin and Argonath (Pillar of Kings). The Pillars were computer-generated in the studio.

Drive over the Crown Range Road and you’ll find yourself in the Cardrona Valley. From here you can drive to the summit of the Crown Range for a panoramic view of Middle‑earth™. To the left are the River Anduin and the Pillars of the Argonath. In the hills straight ahead is the Dimrill Dale. In the distance is Amon Hen on the shore of Nen Hithoel.

Fiordland:  River Anduin, Fangorn Forest

Waiau River (LOTR filming location - The River Anduin)

Waiau River (LOTR filming location - The River Anduin), Fiordland

By Cheeky Kiwi Travel

The Waiau River between Te Anau and Manapouri represented the River Anduin as the Fellowship paddled south from Lothlórien. The surrounding high peaks were used to depict the rough country south of Rivendell.

To discover Fangorn Forest, ask for directions to Takaro Road, which is near Te Anau. Both sides of the road were filmed as Fangorn Forest; remote cameras were strung from high wires to film the hobbits moving through the trees.

After arrival at the Lord of the Rings 10-Day New Zealand Tour in Wellington, you’ll check-in at the tour Hotel from 14:00 to explore the city before meeting the tour leader. We recommend dining at one of Viggo’s favourite places in the Green Parrot Restaurant. The next three nights of accommodation will be in Wellington.

Day 1: Wellywood Day

Starting on day one and finishing on day nine, you will enjoy a fully-inclusive breakfast each morning before you depart for the days’ activities. Day one of the tour will start with experiencing the movie capital of New Zealand in Miramar . Visit the Windows into Workshop tour to marvel at the spectacular weapon and armour displays from the movies, purchase a souvenir and watch behind the scenes footage detailing the Weta company’s history. Experience the Wellywood location as a guided tour shows you some of the special effects used in some of the biggest movies ever. Experience the Weta Cave before heading to the Roxy Theatre for lunch on the house. The latter part of day 1 consists of visiting the filming location of the Get off the Road scene featured in The LOTR, offering stunning views of the city.

Day 2: Presentation day with Daniel Reeve

Lord of the Rings Tour: Map Maker

Day two of the tour won’t involve as much travelling,  as we enjoy an extensive and interactive presentation from Daniel Reeve , The LOTR and The Hobbit Calligrapher and Cartographer. For those visiting during the winter months, day two will also include a presentation from an additional special movie guest. Following the performances you’ll have ample time to explore the attractions nearby such as the Te Papa Museum , watching a movie at the Special Embassy Theatre or experiencing the stunning scenery around Wellington.

Day 3: Wellington to Nelson

After finishing breakfast on day 3, we depart the North island and make our way to the South Island for the next part of the adventure. We’ll set sail from Wellington on the Inter-Island Ferry to the Southern island which takes around 3,5 hours. Lunch will be served (included with the tour), and we’ll then head for Nelson City as our next destination. While travelling to the city, you might like to stop off to see the filming location of the famous scene where the Elves travelled in barrels along the river. As an optional extra you might also like to get a closer look at this location taking a kayak down the river. The day ends with an inclusive stay at an accommodation in Nelson.

Day 4: Nelson Day

Day 4 is yours to explore at your leisure. We’d highly recommend the famous helicopter ride which showcases the LOTR sites located South of Rivendell (at an additional cost). The next step of the tour begins with heading back into Nelson City to meet the creators of the famous One Ring . While there you’ll meet Halfdan Hansen, Jens Hansen’s son to marvel at his breathtaking Hobbit and LOTR jewellery. Night four is in Nelson accommodation.

Day 5: Nelson to Christchurch

Day five will commence with an early start following breakfast to head South towards the Kaikoura Coast . While on the route you’ll stop for a second breakfast (or lunch) to witness the beautiful fur seals having fun. Day five boasts some fantastic photo opportunities, and you’ll also get to enjoy an RCT coach quiz. Finally, we depart for our next stop at Christchurch, where we spend the night before a busy day ahead.

Day 6: Edoras

Lord of the Rings Tour: Edoras

With an early morning departure, we’ll embark for the filming location of Edoras , set upon a hill in a valley of the White Mountains. Making our way up to the top of the area is where we find the site of the Golden Hall, and here is where we’ll fly our Rohan Banner. Afterwards, we experience Tekapo and Pukaki, the breathtaking mountain fed-lakes before witnessing the highest mountain in New Zeland – Mt. Cook. The evening will include an inclusive dinner while enjoying a presentation from a Hobbit-inspired special guest,  before settling into the Twizel accommodation.

Day 7: Pelennor Fields

Lord of the Rings Tour / Swordfight

Day seven kicks off with a visit to the Pelennor Fields , the location that’s known for the powerful sound of 250 horses charging after King Theoden made his battle speech. After experiencing this location, we move on to the Lake-town filming location before sitting down for lunch in Omarama. Following lunch, you might like to try your hand at archery before unwinding in your accommodation in Cromwell.

Day 8: Arrowtown, Queenstown

Venturing deeper into Middle-earth, we visit a variety of LOTR filming locations at Mavora Lakes. Purchase a picnic lunch to take along as we explore The calling up of Shadowfax, The Silverlode bridge, The Orc funeral pyre, Fangorn Forest,  Nen Hithoel, The log which concealed Merry & Pippin before Frodo left the fellowship and where Sam and Frodo paddled away on the next stage of their journey. You’ll have a wealth of astonishing scenery to take in here before being transported to Queenstown in the afternoon. Accommodation will remain in Queenstown for the final three nights.

Day 9: Queenstown

Our next destination is in Arrowtown, and along the way, we take a route which follows the direction of a gold mining road, and we continue up the Arrow River. One of the highlights of Arrowtown is the filming location of where the One Ring dropped among the Gladden fields . You might like to try Bungy-jumping (at an extra cost) before heading to the Elements Restaurant for an inclusive farewell dinner.

Day 10: Optional Activities

Day ten is all about you. After enjoying breakfast, you might like to experience some optional Lord of the Rings activities. Ride the Dart river jet which heads past The Hobbiton movie set , or perhaps a helicopter flight over the Ford of Bruinen . You could enjoy a hot air balloon drive, or keep your feet on the ground with a Routeburn Track guided walk. If retail therapy is more appealing, then Queenstown shopping is the perfect treat. Your tour guide will be able to discuss all of the options available, and help with a booking should you wish.

Departure day

Waking up to the final breakfast of the tour will see your Middle-earth journey coming to an end. As you depart from Queenstown, you will require a domestic airfare to return to Auckland, followed by an international flight for your journey home from Auckland.

This tale begins with a man named Peter Curtin. Peter owns and runs The Roadside Tavern pub in County Clare. He is also a huge Burren enthusiast and is the man behind Storytelling: Tolkien in the Burren .

Abbey Hill in the Burren, County Clare

Abbey Hill in the Burren, County Clare

One rainy afternoon in County Clare , Peter began a friendly chat with an elderly lady in a pub. Her name was Ms Crowe, and for many years she had worked for man called Dr Martyn, who in turn had been friends with JRR Tolkien when the author worked as an external examiner to  National University Galway  in the 40s and 50s.

Ms Crowe recalled how Tolkien and the doctor would often take trips to the lunar-like landscape of the Burren . When you consider that Tolkien was visiting the Burren around the same time that he was writing The Lord of The Rings, it’s easy to see how the stark beauty of this region might have inspired him.

Poulnabrone Dolmen, County Clare

Poulnabrone Dolmen, County Clare

“Tolkien appreciated the unique landscape of the Burren,” says Peter. “Although there are many other places in the world with karst limestone landscape, none are equal to the beauty of the Burren.”

The landscape here is certainly unusual, and for a fantasy author such as Tolkien it must have been magnetic.

Amongst the craggy fissures and creeping woods of the Burren there is a cave called Pol na Gollum (Hole of Gollum). If you’re a Tolkien fan no doubt your ears just pricked up! The notorious character Gollum is essential to the entire plot of  The Lord of The Rings. Did Tolkien get the name for his miserable wretch from this cave? We certainly think so. What’s more, Gollum in  The  Lord of The Rings   had a distinctive gurgling cough, and at the mouth of this cave the chirps and calls of rock doves echo and transform into a similar guttural sound.

You can almost picture the lightbulb pinging above Tolkien’s head.

Walking in the Burren, County Clare

Walking in the Burren, County Clare

Given the strong connection between the author and region, Peter has committed to shining a spotlight on the Tolkien-Burren association.

The Burren’s beauty is already world famous, and its natural oddities well explored. But thanks to Peter’s hard work and passion, it’s accepted that one of the most iconic authors of the 20th century, JRR Tolkien, was influenced by the otherworldly magic of this incredible place.

Although Boromir’s iconic phrase in the novel – “One does not simply walk into Mordor” – may be true in Middle Earth. Here, in the Burren, you can do just that. Enjoy!

An amazing day even if you’re not a LOTR fan!

This was a great day out: a small group trip out with an informed, entertaining guide. The scenery was so spectacular that it’s a terrific experience even for those who aren’t Lord of the Rings fans! Not physically difficult, and a delicious lunch. Highly recommended!!

Perfect for any Lord of the Rings Lover!

This trip was absolutely fantastic! I would highly recommend this for any Lord of the Rings fan! Hassle Free Tours picked us up and dropped us off directly from our hotel, so we did not have to worry about transportation. We were on a 4WD bus with two tour guides full of knowledge about the surrounding area and LOTR. Once on our way, we stopped at a beautiful lake and then continued on the way to Edoras. Edoras itself was beautiful and is a must-see. If you so choose, you can even take up a sword or two and the Rohan flag!

Highly recommended & you will get that Insta-worthy photo!

Highly recommended this tour whether you are LOTR fans or not. Honestly I never watch any of LOTR movies nor read the trilogies, I was more interested in the beautiful scenery. However, the commentary given by our guide (Kris) and the documentaries shown during the drive provide me enough information to catch up to and interested in it. Lunch was plentiful and delicious, the tour was very well organised and Kris couldn't help us enough to share information until the last minute when the tour finished. It was almost perfect, the only thing missing from this tour was Sir Peter Jackson himself.... :)

The Best Way to Experience Lord of the Rings in New Zealand

If you're a fan of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit trilogies, New Zealand is the ultimate destination to immerse yourself in Middle-earth . From lush forests to towering mountains, the landscapes that brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s world to life are scattered across the country. But the best part? You can visit these iconic Lord of the Rings film locations, stand where your favourite scenes were shot, and even live out your own Middle-earth adventure. Here’s how to do it.

1. Start with Hobbiton in Matamata

Hobbiton

When it comes to Lord of the Rings locations, Hobbiton is the crown jewel. Nestled in the rolling hills of Matamata on the North Island, Hobbiton is where the Shire comes to life.

The movie set was originally dismantled after filming, but thanks to the films' success, it was rebuilt and now stands as a permanent attraction. Walking through the lush, green landscape of Hobbiton , you’ll see Bag End, the iconic home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, the Party Tree, and even the Green Dragon Inn.

What to do:

  • Take a guided tour: The Hobbiton Movie Set tour  is an absolute must. Your guide will walk you through the 12-acre set, sharing behind-the-scenes stories, and you’ll get to finish your Lord of the Rings tour with a pint of Southfarthing ale at the Green Dragon Inn.
  • Join a feast: If you're keen to experience Hobbit life to the fullest, opt for a banquet tour. After your evening tour of the set, you'll be treated to a hearty banquet fit for a hobbit in the Green Dragon’s dining room.

2. Venture to the Tongariro National Park – Mordor Awaits

Mordor - The Lord of the Rings

Next up, we’re heading to the dark side. Tongariro National Park on the North Island is home to Mount Doom , or as the locals call it, Mount Ngauruhoe. This otherworldly landscape served as the backdrop for Mordor and is every bit as dramatic in real life.

  • Tackle the Tongariro Alpine Crossing: This is considered one of the best day hikes in the world. The 19.4-kilometre trek will take you through the volcanic terrain of Mordor , with the option to detour up Mount Ngauruhoe if you’re feeling brave. The landscape is stunning, with emerald lakes, steaming craters, and panoramic views.
  • Go on a guided Mordor tour: If hiking isn’t your thing, you can still explore Mordor with a guided 4WD tour. Local guides know the best spots for photos and can share insights into how the area was transformed for the films.

3. Wander the Forests of Rivendell in Wellington

Wellington , New Zealand's capital, is the next stop on our Middle-earth journey. Just outside the city, in Kaitoke Regional Park, you’ll find the lush forest that became Rivendell . The stunning scenery, with its towering trees and peaceful river, is a perfect stand-in for the elven haven.

  • Explore Rivendell: There are self-guided walks through the forest where Rivendell was filmed. You can even find a replica Elven archway that makes for a great photo op.
  • Visit Weta Workshop: While you’re in Wellington, don’t miss a trip to Weta Workshop , the creative studio behind the Lord of the Rings films. The “Weta Cave” mini-museum is filled with props, models, and memorabilia, and the guided tours offer a behind-the-scenes look at how the magic was made.

4. Experience Edoras in Canterbury

Rohan - The Lord of the Rings film location

Time to head to the South Island, where the rolling plains and dramatic mountain ranges make the perfect setting for Rohan . The highlight here is Mount Sunday, which stood in for Edoras , the capital of Rohan .

Mount Sunday is located in the remote Ashburton Lakes region, just south of Christchurch and surrounded by the towering Southern Alps. It’s easy to see why Peter Jackson chose this spot – the sweeping landscapes are absolutely breathtaking.

  • Take a guided Edoras tour: Getting to Mount Sunday is a bit tricky, so the best way to experience Edoras with a guided tour.  These tours usually include 4WD transport, lunch, and plenty of time to explore the hilltop, take in the views, and imagine the Rohirrim galloping across the plains.
  • Hike to Edoras: If you prefer to explore on your own, there’s a short but steep walking track that takes you to the top of Mount Sunday. The views from the top are well worth the effort.

5. Journey into Fangorn Forest in Fiordland

Fangorn Forest

Our next stop is Fiordland National Park , one of the most stunning and remote areas of New Zealand. This is where you'll find the dark, mysterious forests that became Fangorn Forest , home to Treebeard and the Ents.

  • Explore Milford Sound: While the exact Fangorn Forest filming locations are tricky to pinpoint, Milford Sound is a must-visit while you’re in Fiordland. The towering cliffs, waterfalls, and deep blue waters feel like they’re straight out of Middle-earth . You can explore the Sound by boat, kayak, or on foot.
  • Take a helicopter tour: For a truly epic experience, consider a helicopter tour over Fiordland . Many operators offer Lord of the Rings themed flights that take you over key filming locations, giving you a bird’s-eye view of Middle-earth .

6. Discover Pelennor Fields in Twizel

If you’re a fan of epic battles, you can’t miss Twizel in the Mackenzie Basin. This small town was transformed into Pelennor Fields for the massive battle scenes in The Return of the King . The wide-open spaces, with the Southern Alps as a backdrop, create the perfect setting for a showdown between good and evil.

  • Take a Pelennor Fields tour: Local guides offer tours that take you to the exact spots where the battle scenes were filmed. You’ll learn about how the scenes were shot, see where the actors stood, and even get to handle some replica weapons and armour.
  • Explore the Mackenzie Basin: While you’re in the area, take some time to explore the stunning Mackenzie Basin. Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki are both nearby and offer incredible views, especially at sunset.

7. Finish with a Journey to the Southern Alps – The Misty Mountains

Misty Mountains - Lord of the Rings Film location

The Southern Alps stretch down the spine of the South Island, and their rugged peaks and deep valleys were used to represent the Misty Mountains in the films. The Southern Alps are the perfect place to end your Middle-earth adventure, with plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten path.

  • Drive the Great Alpine Highway: This scenic drive takes you across the Southern Alps from Christchurch to the West Coast . Along the way, you’ll pass through Arthur’s Pass National Park, where many of the Misty Mountains scenes were filmed. Keep an eye out for dramatic mountain passes, waterfalls, and the odd kea (a native New Zealand parrot).
  • Go on a Misty Mountains trek: For those who love a good hike, there are plenty of trekking options in the Southern Alps. The Routeburn Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks, offers stunning alpine scenery and is a great way to experience the Misty Mountains up close.

Tips for Planning Your Lord of the Rings Adventure

  • Rent a car or campervan: Many of the Lord of the Rings locations are in remote areas, so having your own wheels will give you the freedom to explore at your own pace.
  • Book tours in advance: Some of the Lord of the Rings tours, especially those in popular areas like Hobbiton and Edoras , can fill up quickly. It’s a good idea to book ahead to secure your spot.
  • Pack for all weather: New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains. Make sure you’re prepared for everything from sunshine to rain, and even snow, depending on the season.
  • Take your time: There’s so much to see and do that it’s worth spending at least two to three weeks exploring both the North and South Islands. This will give you plenty of time to visit all the key Lord of the Rings locations and enjoy everything else New Zealand has to offer.
