Best (and Worst) Times to Visit Goa & Rainy Season (2025)

Goa is a popular beach destination in India. As it is affected by the monsoon from June to October, the best times to visit Goa are from November to April with less rain and better weather.

The Best Times to Visit Goa

The worst time to visit goa, monthly weather in goa, monsoon season in goa (june to october), dry season in goa (november to february), hot season in goa (march to may).

While the best times to visit Goa are from November to April weatherwise, this can depend on your Goa holiday purposes, budget, and weather preferences.

For the finest weather conditions , sightseeing experiences, and water activity conditions, December to February is the best period. You can expect a prefect beach time with sunny, dry, and warm weather.

For the best times to visit Goa for your honeymoon or family trip , consider November to early December and March to April. These are times with relatively few tourists and good weather. Of course, December to February is also a great time if you don't mind crowds.

You can expect lower prices from May to October, which is the rainy season, with 30–50% off offered by many hotels and flights.

For a good travel experience, June to August is best avoided, as these months see extremely heavy rain (0.5–1 meters of rain per month!) with less than 4 hours of sunshine per day and averaging 20 rainy days each month. Torrential rain storms are accompanied by strong winds.

Many attractions like national parks and restaurants will close during this period.

If you want a favorable price and don't want to be affected so much by the rains, you may consider traveling in May, September, and October, which are at the transition months of the monsoon with only moderate to high rainfall and around 10 days of rain per month. Or you could consider the drier regions in India, like Rajasthan.

Frequent showers and occasional hurricanes hit Goa during its monsoon season. June to August suffer huge quantities rainfall, and June/July is the peak.

The abundant rainfall makes the Dudhsagar Waterfalls flow at their most spectacular. In June, there will be one of the important festivals in Goa — Sao Joao Festival. People jump into streams, wells, and ponds, which signifies the happiness of St John the Baptist when Jesus was born, and they pray for a good monsoon and harvest.

The rainy season in Goa might discourage some people from going on holiday there, but during this period, Goa is relatively cool at 29°C (84°F) compared to the 35°C (95°F) temperatures in other parts of India, so many locals choose to escape the heat there.

Lower prices, few tourists, and lush shades of green are the advantages of traveling in Goa in the monsoon if you don't mind the disruption of your plans by storms. What you should note is that on heavy rainy days with strong winds, some attractions and restaurants close.

Goa's dry season features comfortable summer temperatures and clear, sunny weather. It is the best time of the year to visit Goa.

The perfect weather is suitable to for all kinds of sightseeing and activities, like swimming, snorkeling, hiking, photography, and more.

In Christmas and New Year, Goa will be embraced by a strong festival atmosphere. The sound of carols echoes from the walls of the churches. Parties on the beach and bars, music, and fireworks are also indispensable elements of the celebrations.

Accordingly, the perfect weather brings a rise in prices. Accommodation is in high demand, especially from late December to February. If you are planning a trip in this peak season, it is better to book one or two months in advance.

In Goa's hot season, you can expect less crowding than during the dry season and rainless weather until late May. This is also a good time to visit Goa, especially between March and April.

Most of the time is suitable for water activities, sunbathing, and sightseeing. At the end of May there is some monsoon influence, but not much.

One of Goa's biggest festivals, Shigmo Festival (Goa's version of Holi) falls in March or April. The processions with traditional Goan dances and modern floats are the highlight.

You can expect reasonable prices during this period. Heat averaging 33°C (91°F) in the middle of the day is an unavoidable element of the hot season. Remember to bring some sun protection. It could be a good idea to wait to go out until after 3 or 4 pm.

When is the Best Time to Visit Goa?

Swimming pool and beach at Goa resort.

The Taj Fort Aguada Hotel in Candolim, Goa.

I love visiting Goa anytime of year, but for most first-time visitors the best time is during the dry season, which runs from November to March. During this period, the weather is wonderful with minimal rainfall. I think these months are perfect for enjoying the region’s beautiful beaches, water sports, and vibrant nightlife, as well as exploring historical sites and attending local festivals such as the Goa Carnival and Sunburn Festival.

When I Recommend to Visit Goa

Weather : The most pleasant weather in Goa occurs from November to March, with comfortable temperatures ranging from 70°F (21°C) to 85°F (29°C) and minimal rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor activities and sightseeing. April also has tourist-friendly weather though it gets progressively hot as the monsoon season gets closer.

Beaches : The best beach weather in Goa is during the dry season (November to March), when the sea is calm, and the sun is shining. The popular beaches like Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, and Palolem are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and beach parties. (Palolem and Benaulim are my favorite beaches in Goa.)

Honeymoon : For a romantic honeymoon in Goa, consider visiting during the shoulder season months of November, February, and March when the weather is still pleasant, and the tourist crowds are less intense. This offers a more intimate atmosphere and a better chance to explore the region’s natural beauty, beaches, and historical sites.

Water sports : Water sports like jet-skiing, parasailing, windsurfing, and scuba diving are most enjoyable during the dry season (November to March), when the sea conditions are more favorable, and the weather is sunny and warm.

Families : Family trips to Goa can be enjoyable year-round, but the dry season (November to March) offers the best opportunities for outdoor activities, beach vacations, and exploring attractions like wildlife sanctuaries, forts, and churches.

Avoiding crowds : To avoid the largest crowds in Goa, consider visiting during the off-peak season, which typically runs from June to September, coinciding with the monsoon season. During this time, you can expect fewer tourists, lower prices for accommodations, and a more relaxed atmosphere. However, the weather can be wet and humid, with heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions.

Nightlife : The best time to visit Goa for nightlife is during the peak tourist season, which runs from December to February. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the party scene is in full swing, with numerous beach shacks, clubs, and bars hosting lively events, live music, and DJ sets. Goa is also home to popular electronic dance music festivals like the Sunburn Festival, which usually takes place in late December, attracting international DJs and partygoers from around the world.

Goa Travel Seasons

  • High Season (November to March) : Expect day after day of dry and warm weather. It is seldom uncomfortably hot or humid because of soothing coastal breezes but may be a little chilly for some after dark, so pack a light jumper. During the peak times of the peak season – mid-December to mid-January – hotel rates double (at least) and train and plane tickets should be booked way in advance.
  • Shoulder Season (April, May, and October) : Also a good time to come because tourist numbers and hotel rates are markedly lower than the peak months. While temperatures rise a little in the lead-up to the wet season, it’s still dry in April and May, but the monsoonal rain may linger into October.
  • Low Season (June to September) : Avoid the monsoon because it will rain heavily almost every day for hours and streets will get water-logged, possibly affecting travel plans (especially by train). What’s more, cyclones are prevalent at this time, so always be alert. The only redeeming features are the lack of tourists and dramatic drop in hotel rates, but note: some hotels and tourist facilities and attractions, including national parks, may close for some or all of the low season.

Goa Weather by Month

  • Goa Weather in January : Although Goa stretches about 100km along the coast, the weather is standard across the northern and southern regions. January is well into the dry winter. Average daytime temperatures are still warm at 32°C, but drop to 20°C overnight, prompting locals to wear jumpers. This is part of the peak season, especially over the Christmas/New Year period.
  • Goa Weather in February : Continuous warm and dry days; in fact, February is the third successive month of virtually no rain recorded. Perfect time, as the crowds have reduced noticeably from the previous 2 months.
  • Goa Weather in March : More dry and warm days, with almost no rain again officially recorded for the month. Terrific time to visit, especially if it coincides with Easter in this Christian part of the country.
  • Goa Weather in April : Another excellent month for visiting, especially during Easter. Perfect weather: an average of 33°C during the day and a warmish 25°C overnight, and the fifth straight month with almost no rainfall.
  • Goa Weather in May : Start of the pre-monsoon rains, most likely later in the month but unlikely to affect travel plans yet. Also, the hottest time of the year on average: 34°C/26°C during the day/night. Some tourist businesses may start to close down by the end of the month. Note: it’s far too dangerous to swim in the sea anytime from now until the end of October, and cyclones are possible for the next 5 months.
  • Goa Weather in June : Official start of the monsoon, coupled with a drop in average daytime temperatures (and humidity) to 30°C. Also, a sudden and dramatic increase in rainfall; the second-highest on average for the year (and 20 times more than May), with heavy downpours expected every day and cyclones always possible. Rain may affect travel plans, especially by bus or train, and more tourist businesses and national parks may close for a few months. Expect substantial discounts on hotel rates.
  • Goa Weather in July : Wettest month of the year as the heavy monsoon rains fall daily and cyclones are not uncommon. One of the highest monthly averages in India (about 1,200mm), so more hotels and other businesses (including national parks) may close until September/October as tourist numbers plummet. Roads may be water-logged, possibly affecting travel by bus and train, and the sea is still too dangerous for swimming.
  • Goa Weather in August : The end of the monsoon is near, but still expect plenty of rain and possible cyclones. There are considerably fewer downpours than the previous 2 months, although it will still rain most days. Average daytime/overnight temperatures have dropped to equal the lowest level for the year: 29°C/24°C.
  • Goa Weather in September : The monsoon season officially ends, but rain usually continues deep into September (and October). Although about one-quarter of the amount of rain from July, some roads might still be muddy and water-logged. Some businesses and national parks that closed during the wet season re-open this month. Even for a few weeks after the end of the monsoon, rips make swimming in the sea dangerous.
  • Goa Weather in October : Still some rain early in the month as the dry winter approaches, and swimming in the sea is no longer dangerous after the monsoon has gone. On average, a few degrees warmer than the previous 3 months: a warm 32°C during the day and 24°C overnight. Roads should have dried out by now and all businesses and national parks that closed for the wet season will have re-opened.
  • Goa Weather in November : With virtually no rain now or for the next 5 months, businesses are preparing for the return of tourists in large numbers. The warm days of 33°C on average continue, but overnight temperatures drop slightly to 22°C. Start of the festival season.
  • Goa Weather in December : Another perfect month of dry and warm days, which is the trend for the next 4 months. Crowds start increasing markedly, especially over Christmas and New Year, when hotel rates may double (at least) and tickets on planes and trains are hard to find. Prime time for festivals.

Goa Holidays, Events, and Festivals

India has the world’s second-largest population of Muslims (after Indonesia), but comparatively few live in Goa. Dates for these 4 major festivals change each year according to the Islamic calendar. Each is a public holiday, but few (if any) government offices or businesses will close: Eid-al-Fitr (end of Ramadan), Eid Mulid-un-Nabi (Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday), Muharram/Ashura (Islamic New Year), and Eid al-Adha/Zuha (often commemorated with the slaughter of goats). Because of its Portuguese heritage, Goa is overwhelmingly Christian, so major festivals celebrated elsewhere in India by Hindus are comparatively low-key, and those observed by Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains are virtually non-existent.

Patriotic time, with government buildings suitably decorated and ceremonies held, especially in Delhi. Also, a time for families to get together. National public holiday when all government offices and many tourist attractions close.
  • Bonderam (fourth Saturday) – Parades and mock battles on an island near Old Goa honoring fierce disputes of the past amongst villagers engaged in land disputes.

  • Ganesh Chaturthi (changeable, August/September) – Solemn occasion for a week or so commemorating the birth of the highly-revered elephant-headed God, Ganesha.

The best time to visit Goa

Surfers in Goa

Most people consider Goa for a year-end beach vacation, but the state has become a year-round destination over the years, with different seasons offering different experiences to tourists. The best time to visit Goa really depends on what you want from your trip. There’s a lot to the destination beyond beaches: local tavernas, exciting street food , monsoon treks, hidden waterfalls, and homestays on quiet beaches. Plan wisely and you can explore a side to Goa that isn’t all over Instagram . Here’s a handy guide on the best time to visit Goa.

Jump to: The best time to visit Goa Temperature in Goa Is monsoon a good time to visit Goa? The cheapest time to visit Goa The best time to surf in Goa Which is better: North or South Goa? How many days are enough for a Goa trip? Is Goa good to visit with family? Plan your stay

What is the best time to visit Goa?

The best time to visit Goa is from November to February. The heat and humidity give way to more pleasant sunny days by December, and the waves are gentler during this time. December also brings the Christmas spirit to several local homes, and bakeries and decades-old stores stock up on Christmas sweets like kalkal, dodol and neureos. This is also peak tourist season in Goa, which means hotel and flight prices shoot up at this time. While most people visit Goa in December, January brings better weather and slightly lesser crowds.

Temperatures begin to rise from March, with summer settling in by April. The months between March and June see hot sunny days, with the mercury climbing to 35°C. If the heat and humidity doesn’t bother you, you can still make the most of a trip to Goa during this time by planning any sightseeing and beach visits either early in the morning or in the evening. June to September is monsoon in Goa and the state experiences heavy rainfall. Frequent showers make beach visits difficult, but also offer the opportunity to experience the state’s offbeat natural experiences.

Temperature in Goa

March to May: 25°C-35°C June to October: 24°C-30°C November to February: 20°C-30°C

Is monsoon a good time to visit Goa?

Monsoon is an underrated time to visit Goa and is best for folks with a sense of adventure and a love for the unmanicured outdoors. Monsoon brings beautiful waterfalls and lush greenery to the Western Ghats. You can trek through forests to find natural pools and falls, hike through the thriving forest of Mollem National Park, take rainy boat rides in the mangroves and enjoy seasonal seafood and vegetable preparations beyond recheado and cafreal.

What is the cheapest time to visit Goa?

The monsoon season is off-season and therefore the cheapest time to visit Goa. Expect flight and hotel prices to drop during this time. However, remember that you may not be able to lounge on the beach or visit shacks in the monsoon. Many beach shacks, outdoor restaurants and hotels shut for the season.

What’s the best time to surf in Goa?

“The best months to learn surfing in Goa are from October to March,” says Arun Vasu, President of the Surfing Federation of India. “During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the conditions in the sea are generally favourable for beginners. Monsoon, which lasts from June to September, is not recommended for learning due to the unpredictable and rough sea conditions.” There are several surf schools in Goa, including Surf Wala in Arambol, Octopus Surf in Morjim and Vaayu Kula in Mandrem. More on where to learn surfing in Goa here

Which is better: North or South Goa?

This depends on what kind of trip you’re looking for. North Goa typically sees more tourist crowds and consists of neighbourhoods like Panaji, Assagao , Anjuna, Baga and Calangute, which are home to several buzzing restaurants and bars. While beaches like Baga and Calangute are typically full of tourists, North Goa does have less crowded beaches such as Mandrem, Ashwem and Morjim. If you would prefer to steer clear of large tourist crowds, South Goa is a quieter option, with beaches like Palolem, Varca and Colva.

How many days are enough for a Goa trip?

Three to four days are enough for a Goa trip in either North or South Goa. If you plan to spend time in both parts of Goa, it’s best to add a day or two to your trip so you get to explore the best of both. When in Goa, go bar-hopping in Panaji , visit old local churches and bakeries, spend long, lazy days on the beach and go shopping at quaint boutique stores.

Is Goa good to visit with family?

There are several family and kid-friendly activities in Goa. Families will enjoy watersports, visits to museums and heritage trails in Panaji. Responsible adventure company Konkan Explorers can organise kayaking programs and yacht cruises for groups, coupled with open water swimming if the weather and tides permit. If you’re travelling with kids , try boat trips, art walks and workshops with Make It Happen and surf lessons.

Home » Best Time to Visit Goa, India: Best Season & Month To Go

Goa is a magical place to visit. Many tourists describe the weather as perfect—not too hot or cold—if you go there at the right time of year.

Of course, you should expect tropical weather, which means that Goa is hot and humid for many months.

Goa has two main seasons: a monsoon season and a dry season.

The best season to visit Goa in India is winter, and the best month is December or January.

Complete Guide: The Best Time to Visit Goa, India

Arambol beach, Goa

1. Goa In The Summer (March Through June)

  • Temperature Range: 25 – 33 ° C
  • Expect hot and humid days
  • June marks the start of monsoon season
  • May is the hottest month

This is considered to be one of the off-seasons in Goa. The temperatures start rising, and it can be pretty hot and humid.

Holiday-makers can take part in water activities during this time of year. However, the sea can be rough, so they should be cautious.

There isn’t much going on during these months, but if you want to kick back and relax, you can get a great rate.

Goa-Off-Season

Hotel prices tend to be cheaper, and you won’t have to deal with many crowds.

You can relax and enjoy great food when traveling to Goa during summer.

Best-Time-to-Visit-Goa

Summer is not my preferred time to travel to Goa. June is risky, as you might get lots of rain, and May is one of the hottest months in Goa.

However, it could be a good option if you want to avoid crowds and find hotels for a cheaper rate.

2. Goa During Monsoon Season (June To September)

Worst-time-to-visit-GOa

  • Temperature Range: 25 – 30 ° C
  • Lots and lots of rain

One of the significant drawbacks of going to Goa during this time of year is the monsoons. They can put a dampener on your vacation.

It will rain a lot, but some things are going on, including the fertility feast of Saint John the Baptist. During this festival, men jump into wells to grab bottles of alcohol. It’s pretty interesting.

Like the summer months, you can get a good deal on hotels and airfare during this time. You also won’t have to deal with a lot of crowds.

3. Goa In The Winter (October to February)

goa-best-time-to-visit

  • Peak Season
  • Temperature Range: 25 – 32 ° C

Looking for the best January holiday destinations ? Then a holiday to Goa is perfect as this is probably the most popular time and the best season to visit Goa.

If you cannot travel during January, then any months from October to February will offer you similar weather.

The rains have diminished, and it’s warm, but not too hot, at an average temperature of around 28 degrees Celsius.

Because these months offer the best weather to visit Goa, it is also the busiest time of year to visit Goa.

Many like participating in water sports like parasailing and jet skiing. Winter is quite a lively time, and those who like to enjoy the party scene tend to enjoy it.

Because this is peak season, it’s a good idea to make your hotel reservations as far out in advance as possible to guarantee you get a room and not have to pay a hefty price.

Peak tourist season in Goa is in December and January, so if you visit just before or after this, you will have a more peaceful time away from the crowds.

Is it a good time to go to Goa in September?

Goa has monsoon season from June to September so that you will face medium to heavy rainfalls.

If you don’t mind the rain, you will be traveling during the off-season, which means fewer tourists.

Thanks to the rain, you will also be surrounded by lush greenery and have a beautiful view of the beaches.

So, if you don’t mind rainy days, this could be the best time to travel to Goa for those who want to avoid the crowds.

How is the weather in Goa in May?

You will have an average temperature of around 30°C – 33°C during the daytime.

At night, it cools down slightly to around 27°C.  So May is probably not the ideal time to visit Goa unless you enjoy the heat!

When is the Goa off-season time?

May to September is considered off-season in Goa. This is because you will either face insane heat or super rainy weather.

May is usually unbearably hot, followed by the monsoon season from early or mid-June.

Final Thoughts On the Best Month to Visit Goa

So even though there probably isn’t a ‘’right’’ time to visit Goa, the best months to visit Goa are from mid-November to mid-March.

Peak tourist season in Goa is in December and January, so I would avoid those months if you don’t like crowds.

Remember, June to September is Monsoon season, and May is hot.

I hope that has helped you figure out the best season to visit Goa. Enjoy your trip!

Best time to visit Goa: Quick Overview

  • The months between November and February are considered to be winter months in Goa and are therefore the best time to visit Goa.
  • Even though the maximum temperature ranges between 5°C and 34°C and the minimum ranges between 10°C and 22°C , the weather is still very pleasant.
  • There is usually no rain in Goa during this period and therefore the humidity is also far lower than that in other months.

  • The overall pricing of stay, food and other activities is higher compared to the summer months of Goa.

Quick Note for Goa High Season 2022-23

Given that tourism suffered majorly in Goa during the last two years owing to restrictions and curfews, the high season in Goa in 2022-23 is expected to see a massive influx of tourists. Goan shacks, restaurants, cafes, clubs, party places and flea markets are expected to operate with full capacity and without restrictions for the first time after 3 years.

Expect huge crowds but also an electric holiday atmosphere – the kind that every travel deprived tourist has been craving for the last few years. So if you are planning a trip to Goa during its upcoming high season, make sure you book your flight tickets and book your hotels right away. Let's face it. Most people visit Goa for the beaches and parties. However, there's plenty more to experience. The Portuguese occupied Goa for about 450 years until the Indian Armed Forces finally drove them out in 1961. The state was also a significant destination on the 1970s hippie trail. As a result, it's quite unlike anywhere else in India and has a distinctly different culture. This Goa guide will help plan your trip.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Goa's tourist season runs from October to March, when the weather is warm and dry. Most beach shacks open in November. They pack up by April or May due to the extreme heat and humidity. The southwest monsoon brings rain from June to September.
  • Language: Konkani is the native language of most Goans, however, English and Hindi are widely understood and spoken.
  • Currency: Indian rupee.
  • Time Zone: UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) +5.5 hours, also known as Indian Standard Time. Goa does not observe daylight saving time.
  • Getting Around: Taxis and auto-rickshaws are the most common methods of transportation. Unfortunately, the notorious Goan taxi mafia keeps fares high and prevents app-based cabs such as Uber from operating. There is a state-run, app-based taxi service called GoaMiles . The Hop-On-Hop-Off Bus is an inexpensive way of reaching Goa's tourist attractions. Hiring a motorcycle or scooter is popular and affordable.
  • Travel Tip: The monsoon season in Goa is ideal for spending time in the state's mountainous interior hinterland. White water rafting is possible.

Things to Do

Most people are surprised at how many things there are to do in Goa apart from the beach and nightlife. This includes water sports and adventure activities , hot air ballooning, cooking lessons, exploring old forts, seeing the spice plantations, browsing museums and art galleries, bird watching at Doctor Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, hiking in the nature reserves, yoga and natural therapies, cruising along the Mandovi River in a private yacht , betting at the casinos , listening to live jazz music, and of course shopping. Active travelers can go on these off-beat electric bicycle tours or walking tours .

Three of the main things to do in Goa are:

  • Hanging out at the Wednesday flea market at Anjuna beach, Friday Goa Collective Bazaar at Hilltop near Vagator, and Saturday Night Market at Arpora (between Anjuna and Baga). These markets are seasonal.
  • Wandering around Old Goa and the Fontainhas Latin Quarter .
  • Touring the Portuguese mansions in South Goa .

What to Eat and Drink

Goan cuisine was influenced mainly by the Portuguese and is predominantly non-vegetarian. Lesser-known is the traditional cuisine of the state's Hindu Saraswat Brahmin community. Fish curry and rice is a ubiquitous staple in Goa. Common types of dishes you'll find on the menu are xacutti (coconut-based curry), cafreal (marinated and fried/grilled), sorpotel (stew), recheado (stuffed), ambot tik (sour and spicy), and vindaloo (fiery curry marinated with garlic and vinegar or wine). Goan chourico (sausages) and pao (bread) are popular as well. However, you'll need to venture away from the beach shacks to get authentic Goan food.

Feni is Goa's pungent local brew and the unofficial state drink. It's made from cashew fruit or the sap of coconut palms. Drink it with tonic water or lemonade and a slice of lime. Avoid cheap, commercially produced feni though, as it has a distinctively unpleasant smell. Instead, try and get your hands on some home-distilled feni ( Dudhsagar Plantation Farmstay makes their own). Or, a bottle of premium Big Boss or  Cazulo feni. It's now possible to go straight to the source of Cazulo feni, as the company has opened its cellar in the Cansaulim foothills for tours and tastings. Call 8605-008-185 to book. Joseph Bar in Panjim's Fontainhas Latin Quarter crafts some innovative feni cocktails. On the beach, King's beer goes well with a curry.

Goa's coastline extends for about 100 miles. Every beach is different , and there are so many types of accommodations ranging from beach huts to luxury private villas. It can be confusing! If you're looking for action, base yourself in North Goa because South Goa is relatively undeveloped and laid-back. Most of the luxury hotels are situated in South Goa. Palolem is the most happening beach in South Goa, while Agonda is ideal for chilling out and doing nothing. Patnem offers a bit of both. In North Goa, the Candolim-Calangute- Baga stretch of beaches is especially commercialized and gets super crowded during peak season. Backpacker hostels are prevalent near Anjuna beach, and the famous Wednesday flea market takes place there as well. The remaining psychedelic trance scene exists around Vagator beach, the Mandrem-Morjim-Ashwem stretch of beaches has become quite trendy, while Arambol beach is the new traveler's center with a wide range of alternative therapies. Capital city Panjim is centrally located between north and south Goa. Its Fontainhas Latin Quarter is an atmospheric neighborhood to stay in a restored Portuguese mansion.

Getting There

Goa has one airport. It's an international airport that operates out of a military airbase in Dabolim, roughly equal distance from Goa's north and south beaches. Most people take a prepaid taxi from the airport to their hotel. There's a counter in the arrivals terminal where you can book and pay. A shuttle bus service also runs from the airport to Panjim, Calangute, and Margao. It can be booked online here or at the airport.

Indian Railways train is another option for getting to Goa. It's handy for budget travelers, and conveniently has multiple stops in north and south Goa. The stretch from Mumbai to Goa along the Konkan Railway is particularly scenic. Here are the best trains from Mumbai to Goa .

Culture and Customs

Goa is more liberal than other states in India. This means women can wear short dresses and bikinis on the beach. There's no need to dress conservatively.

Scams are common in Goa, including the infamous gem scam . Beware of any Indian guys who try to befriend you. People offering to sell you drugs may also approach you. Don't accept, as dealers often have arrangements with the police. The police are corrupt and will extort money from tourists found in possession of illegal substances such as marijuana. The cops often demand bribes for traffic violations too. If you hire a motorcycle or scooter, make sure you carry your license with you and wear a helmet at all times.

While Goa has a reputation for being a party hub there are very strict drug laws. Those caught with drugs could face jail times of 6 months to 30 years and there is no option for bail.

Money-Saving Tips

  • Hotels offer huge discounts of up to 50 percent during the low season from May to September.
  • There are many budget accommodations in Goa that don't advertise on the Internet. If you're not traveling during peak season (mid-December to mid-January), turn up and find a place and negotiate the rate.
  • Stay in a dorm or private room in a backpacker hostel.
  • Keep an eye out for happy hours and ladies' nights at bars for cheap or free drinks.
  • Make sure you bargain at markets to get a good deal.

A Complete 7-day Itinerary and Guide to Goa for First Timers

This guide to Goa is perfect for those of you planning to travel there for the first time, as it talks about the best time to visit, how to reach Goa, popular beaches in North and South Goa, where to stay for your first visit, and how to get around. Also included is Goa itinerary for 7 days.

Goa is a tropical paradise with endless white and golden-sand beaches lined with swaying palm trees. This small state in the southwestern region of India is unlike any other, with its laid-back culture balanced by its thriving nightlife. But that’s not all there is to Goa. It is a land of soothing bike rides, fascinating world heritage sites, plush resorts, friendly hostels, delectable seafood, and various forms of spiritual practices.

It is a popular destination in India amongst Indian and international travellers (after the Taj Mahal, of course), as it has something for everyone.

Guide to Goa For First Timers

What is the best time to visit goa.

pasture, low-land, buffaloes, Monsoon may not be the best time to visit Goa due to flooding

March-May : These are the summer months when Goa gets unbearably muggy, with temperatures touching 40ºC (104ºF).

June – September : During these monsoon months, Goa becomes lush green. It is relatively quieter than other months. Most shacks are temporary structures that are dismantled during this period and water sports aren’t going on. But this is a charming time in Goa overall, with plenty of restaurants and activities to keep you entertained.

November–February : Winter is the peak season here. Goa, being a coastal area, is balmy while the inland parts of the country go through typical winter temperatures. The sun is always out and the cool sea breeze blows through from time to time. December is the busiest month as Goa hosts the Annual Sunburn Music Festival, which attracts people from all over. Plus, people flock in to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s holidays at this party destination.

Verdict: For your first time in Goa, you should visit during the season, Mid-October to Mid-March , so that you can see all that Goa has to offer. The shacks will be open, beach stays will be available in South Goa and the weather will be pleasant. However, the prices will be higher than any other time of the year.

How to reach Goa?

How to reach Goa? Have a fun time in a train

Goa’s international airport is situated at Dabolim, near Vasco Da Gama, and there is also a new airport in North Goa, Manohar International Airport. You can land at either of these and hire a taxi to your hotel/hostel.

While most cities in India have an organised cab service like Uber and Ola, Goa has  GoaMiles  ( now also an app) that can pass for Goa’s very own Uber. We’ve used it a few times and found cabs at a good rate. You can also opt for the taxis lined up on the road outside the airport (be prepared to bargain and ensure to set prices before the start of the trip) or prepaid taxi stands at airports that have a set price. You can always ask at your accommodation if they provide airport transfers but these might turn out to be more expensive.

Local buses in Goa are significantly cheaper but also very inconvenient, as you would have to change multiple vehicles to get to your destination in Goa. Use the local bus only if you’re on a super low budget.

Bus, Cab and Car

You can also opt to reach Goa by overnight bus or cab from major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad in India. If travelling by bus, Mapusa would be your de-boarding point for North Goa , Panjim for Central , and Margao/Canacona for South .

You can book your bus via Redbus .

We’ve driven it down from Pune a few times now and once from Hyderabad. The road is full of potholes as you get closer to Goa. But you’ll cross ghats and waterfalls. It is beautiful!

Goa is also well connected by train to the rest of India. The main train stations are Vasco da Gama (central), Margao (south) and Thivim (north) .

Which area to stay in Goa?

A fairly empty Baga Beach - One of the popular beaches in North Goa

Goa is divided into North and South Goa, with its capital, Panaji (popularly known as Panjim), located around the centre. For your first time in Goa, it can be confusing to decide where to stay, as different corners of the state offer different experiences. In this itinerary, you’ll be staying in both North Goa and South Goa .

Baga, Calangute, Candolim or Anjuna : This is a good option for your first time in Goa, as the area is very central, so all places to see would be close to you.

However, please note that these beaches aren’t best, as they’re the most popular in Goa. Every Tom Dick and Harry visit these beaches so the crowd is also such. However, your purpose of staying around this area is different. You’re here to enjoy the water sports, the parties, the food and maybe even shop a little.

A little further north is Anjuna. While it is not the best location to stay for this itinerary, this area has come up a lot in the past few years, so you’ll find a lot of  must-visit restaurants in Goa  around this area.

Stay Options:

Casa Cenica (2BHK in Arpora) Onastay  (2BHK in Candolim) Casa De Mezzanine (Beautiful 1BHK in Arpora) Jade by CasaFlip (2BHK in Anjuna) Beach Villa With Private pool (luxury) Canary By CasaFlip (1BHK in Anjuna).

Palolem or Agonda: For your first trip to South Goa, you should stay at one of these two beaches and explore other beaches nearby. These beaches have restaurants but still maintain a relaxed vibe so you can enjoy time on the beach. Remember that you should only stay in South Goa beaches beach from October to March, as the huts and shacks are mostly dismantled before the monsoons and built back up when the monsoons get over. Click to  know more about South Goa Beaches .

Stay Options: Jardim-a-Mar (Agonda Beach—I’ve stayed here twice) Simrose (Agonda Beach; this one is often open all-year round) Agonda Serenity Beach Villa (has a jacuzzi on porch at Agonda Beach) Agonda Island View (Agonda Beach) BunkNBrew (hostel in Palolem)

How to get around Goa?

Palolem Beach - One of the popular beaches in South Goa

Taxis are expensive in Goa and not ideal for getting around and sightseeing. Buses are quite cheap but again, inconvenient. Instead, opt for a scooter or motorbike for the duration of your stay in Goa. There is no better way to get around, as it will give you the utmost freedom. The best bit is that it is inexpensive at about Rs. 500–800 a day, depending on the season (off-season or peak), type of bike (scooters like Honda Activa, low-end bikes like Bajaj Pulsar or high-end ones, like Royal Enfield) and your haggling skills.

If you don’t want to ride a bike or moped, you can hire a car . Most offer stick shifts so if you don’t know how to drive these, finding an automatic may not be easy. However, we have always managed to find one and so should you. Economy cars usually cost about Rs. 1000–1200 per day but may go up depending on the season.

You can get a bike or car on hire easily by talking to your accommodation host or hotel.

The Perfect 1 Week Goa Itinerary: North and South Goa

The Goa experience is different for every individual, depending on their style of travel. It’s never one size fits all because there is simply so much to see and do. We have stayed in Goa for 2 months and have yet to see it all. Your personalised Goa itinerary would largely depend on what you enjoy—nature, culture, beaches, partying, etc. In this 7-day Goa itinerary, we’ve tried to include a bit of everything so you can get a true feel of the different sides of Goa and decide for yourself which aspect of Goa you enjoy the most!

Day 1-2 North Goa – Watersports, Shopping, and Partying

Stay near the Baga Beach/Arpora area. Despite being crowded, it is close to a lot of North Goa tourist spots you’ll be visiting. And also, hire a scooter, bike or car. You’ll need it to get around. Prior reservations for restaurants are needed!

Day 1: Beach, Water sports, Party

Visit Baga Beach during your first time in Goa

  • Reach Goa and check into your hotel or Airbnb
  • Rent a vehicle
  • Calangute Beach for lunch at Pousada by the Beach
  • Water sports and sunset at Baga Beach
  • At night go partying at Hammerz (popular music) in the Baga Area or Las Olas (Bollywood music) at Baga Beach. Or both as they’re close by! Start at Hammerz and end at Las Olas.

Day 2: Cliffside Restaurants, Fort, Sundowner, and Party

You don’t need to do all of the things mentioned below. Select the ones you wish to do based on your preferences and how much time you have. I’d recommend not partying till late this night so you can be fresh to explore Goa the next morning.

Antares View Goa

  • Wake up late this day since you’ve partied the previous night
  • Lunch:   Titlie OR Antares OR Casa Playa at Little Vagator or Felix OR Artjuna or Vinayak at Anjuna.
  • Shop: Now go shop at Anjuna Flea Market!
  • Explore Chapora Fort (The movie ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was shot here so expect it to be crowded)
  • Stay for sunset or go for a sundowner to Thalassa closeby
  • Dinner at Ida in Vagator
  • Party at one of the following – Soro (Siolim) or Romeo Lane (Little Vagator).

Day 3–4: North Goa: Culture, Heritage and Nature

Day 3: culture and heritage.

Head for a day trip to Panjim and Old Goa . On this day, you’ll get a good glimpse of Portuguese influence on Goan heritage.

Basilica of Bom Jesus

Old Goa Churches : Start with Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the following churches in this order:

  • St. Augustine Church Ruins
  • Basilica of Bom Jesus (the most renowned)
  • Convent of Santa Monica and The Museum of Christian Art (optional but good)
  • Se Cathedral
  • Church of St. Cajetan
  • Viceroy’s Arch
  • Our Lady of Mount Chapel (optional- for panoramic views of the Panjim area)

Ruins of the Chuch of St. Augustine is a fantastic spot to add to your Goa itinerary

Going on a tour will help you make the most of your time and understand the significance of Old Goa and its churches. It is highly recommended. We’ve taken several tours by this company and loved all of them.

Lunch : Head for either a local Goan lunch at Kokni Kanteen or Cafe Al Fresco By Cantina Bodeg a for continental food. Both are close to your next stop.

Fontainhas : After lunch, take a walk in Fontainhas, Asia’s largest Latin Quarter, which has lanes lined with houses built in the colonial style and painted in bright shades of red, yellow, green, and blue. We highly recommend seeing this area on a Latin Quarter walking tour ; only then will you truly be able to appreciate the history, architecture, and all the stories.

However, if you don’t wish to take a tour, start your walk at Maruti Mandir or Phoenix Springs, ending at the Church of Immaculate Conception. See the colourful houses, click a lot of photos at the colourful wall of Old Quarter Hostel, buy some Azulejo tile décor at Velha Goa Galleria, admire the white façade of St. Sebastian Chapel, and have some bebinca (Goan Dessert) at Confeitaria 31 De Janeiro .

goa tour best month

Evening: Get drinks and small bites at Antonio@31 or head for a full-fledged dinner at Black Sheep Bistro . Please check the prices of these restaurants beforehand to see if they fit your budget and make reservations accordingly. You could also go for a fun Pub Crawl instead.

Night: Later, you could head to a Deltin Royale Casino (buy tickets online for the best deals) OR go back home to rest for an early morning the next day.

Book Tours in Goa

Day 4: Nature and Heritage

Chorao Island and the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary : Do this either on a tour or by yourself. You’ll have to take a ferry from Ribandar. Don’t miss the famous Mangrove Broadwalk. It is beautiful. We haven’t been here yet but can’t wait to go!

Lunch: Lazy Goose , Nerul. Reserve the table with the lake view if you can.

Depending on the time you start the day, see one/two of the following attractions. Choose one museum and one fort:

  • Houses of Goa Museum (do this only after a walking tour of Fontainhas; otherwise, nothing will make any sense) OR Museum of Goa (modern art tinged in Goan history).
  • Aguada Fort (great for sunsets but crowded) OR Reis Magos Fort (relatively less known and beautiful).

Reis Magos Fort is a hidden gem in North Goa.

Have dinner in the Candolim, Calangute, or Baga area. There are plenty of good restaurants.

A Reverie : Fine Dining Toro Toro : Continental/Goan Yazu – Pan Asian Beach Club: Asian

Day 5–6: South Goa: Beaches and Relaxation

Day 5: spice plantations, iconic restaurants, relaxation.

Now, head to South Goa. Stay at Agonda or Palolem Beach—both are fantastic beaches for your first time in Goa.

But on your way, you have the option of making a few stops.

Visit Spice Plantations- A top suggestion for our Goa Travel Guide Blog

  • Sahakari Spice Plantation: Wonder why the Portuguese were so fascinated by Goa? The answer lies in the tantalising smell and flavours of spices like Cardamom, Cinnamon, Cloves, Allspice, Cumin, etc. See how these spices grow and learn about them. End with a local buffet lunch at the plantation. I found the experience very interesting and learned a lot. You can buy the ticket on reaching there.
  • Iconic Restaurants: If you’re not in the mood for the above, stop at Martin’s Corner or Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch. They are both very renowned.

Check into your hotel and use this day to do nothing and just relax on the beach, see the sunset, etc. Otherwise, you could also choose to head to Sundowner Palolem (Bar) for a sundowner!

Day 6: Beaches and Viewpoints

Today is going to be a long day of beach hopping.

Cola Beach: Start your day at Cola Beach. It’s a bit of a hike down to the beach. You can even take the jeep to the beach to save time and effort but it’ll cost a bit. Cola Beach is famous for its lagoon, where you can swim and kayak. You can have lunch here before heading to your next stop.

Kakolem Beach: This beach has a waterfall. Yes, you read that right. ( you can skip this beach if you’re running short on time or want to take it a bit slow).

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Modi & Trisha – Travel Couple (@trywanderingmore)

Cabo De Rama Fort and Cabo De Rama Viewpoint for sunset . Both are gorgeous spots with fantastic views – you’ll love the sunset here. You can also choose to have a meal and drink at the Cape Goa restaurant near the viewpoint before heading back to your hotel.

Day 7: Butterfly Beach and Palolem/Agonda Beach

Agonda Beach in South Goa

  • Butterfly Beach : It’s a beautiful secluded beach. You can hike it to the beach or go via boat but I’ll suggest going as early as possible to avoid crowds.
  • Palolem/Agonda Beach : For lunch head to either of these beaches that you’re not staying at. At Palolem, you can have lunch at Dropadi by the beach and at Treetop Tava or Zest (vegan cafe) at Agonda. Walk around the beach later afterwards.

Depart for home this evening or the next morning!

But do not forget to book your tours in goa before you get there!

Tips to Stay Safe in Goa

This guide to Goa would be incomplete if I didn’t mention tips to stay safe there. Goa is really welcoming and local-friendly. But because it is a  thriving party location and has people travelling from all over, you should take care of the following, especially if you’re a woman.

  • Don’t hitchhike.
  • If you’re a woman travelling solo, preferably rent a car. If you’re a woman travelling in a group, bikes will do.
  • Always get a video of the vehicle hired to avoid being ripped off on returning the vehicle.
  • Don’t go out with people you don’t know and never go to parties alone.
  • Watch your drink.
  • Try to stay vigilant, even when drunk.
  • Some Indian men can assume friendliness as flirting.
  • Be cautious of theft at your accommodation. Huts can easily be broken into.
  • Drugs are available abundantly in Goa. Avoid getting stuck in the middle of a drug racket.
  • Avoid drunken driving. It is being monitored by the police more strictly than before.

Don’t let these scare you. I (Trisha) have  travelled solo to Goa  and also with my girlfriends and had an absolutely fantastic time. Most of these tips should be adhered to anywhere in the world. Here is a complete list of  ways to stay safe while travelling alone .

Also, read these must-knows before travelling to India if you’re visiting this incredible country for the first time.

Goa is a place that you can never get enough of. With each visit, you discover something new—a secret beach, a quaint café, a shack with amazing music, a magnificent fort, and so on. We have visited Goa about five times for short periods—with different people, as different people in different phases of our lives, or wanting something different from our trip—and Goa has never let us down. We are sure you will be taken by the charm of Goa and not want to leave, just like the hippies in their heydays. I hope you found this Goa travel blog useful and have an amazing first trip to Goa. Best Time to Visit Goa: Your Ultimate Travel Guide

Last Updated: October 18, 2023

beautiful goa province beach in India with fishing boats and stones in the sea

Goa, often referred to as the “Pearl of the Orient,” is a tropical paradise nestled on the western coast of India. Renowned for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage, Goa is a destination that caters to a wide range of interests. However, choosing the best season to visit Goa for a family trip can greatly enhance your experience. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the various seasons and Goa weather that define the best time to visit Goa, ensuring you make the most of your trip.

Sao Joao Festival (Late June)

Shigmo festival (march), sunburn festival (december), 1 peak tourist season and pleasant weather.

The best time to visit Goa for most tourists is during the peak season, which spans from late November to early February. During this period, the weather is idyllic, with warm days and comfortably cool nights. The average temperature hovers around 25-30°C, making it perfect for beach vacations, water sports, and outdoor activities.

2 Winter Season: Ideal for Sun Seekers

The winter season in Goa, extending from November to February is characterized by dry and warm weather. This is the prime time for scuba diving, beach parties, and jet skiing. Baga Beach, in particular, comes alive with vibrant nightlife and beach shacks serving delectable Goan cuisine. Accommodation options may be slightly pricier due to the high demand, so it’s advisable to book in advance.

3 Goa Carnival: A Cultural Extravaganza

carnival celebrations in goa india

If you’re a fan of cultural festivals, plan your visit during the Goa Carnival held in late February or early March. This lively event showcases Goa’s version of Mardi Gras, with parades, traditional music, and dance performances. It offers a unique glimpse into the state’s Portuguese heritage and lively spirit.

4 Monsoon Season: Lush Greenery and Waterfalls

The rainy season, from June to September, brings heavy rainfall to Goa. While this may not be the best time for beach activities, it’s an excellent period for experiencing the state’s lush greenery and natural beauty. The Dudhsagar Waterfalls, at their peak during this season, are a must-see spectacle. The Sao Joao Festival which is celebrated in late June, is a highlight of the monsoon season, featuring traditional songs and festivities.

5 Early December: A Sweet Spot

For those seeking a balance between pleasant weather and fewer crowds, early December is an ideal time to visit Goa. The monsoon season has bid farewell, leaving behind lush landscapes, and the tourist rush of the peak season has yet to kick in. This is the perfect window to enjoy Goa’s stunning beaches and outdoor activities without the usual crowds.

6 Mid-November to Mid-December: Perfect Weather Transition

Mid-November marks the transition from the monsoon season to the peak tourist season. The weather is generally pleasant, and the average temperature is conducive to outdoor activities. This period offers a unique opportunity to experience Goa before the bustling crowds of late December arrive.

7 Late December: Celebrate the Holidays in Style

Late December is the epitome of the tourist season in Goa. With warm days and pleasant nights, it’s the perfect time for families, couples, and solo travellers alike. The festive season is in full swing, with Christmas and New Year celebrations adding an extra sparkle to the Goan atmosphere. Beach areas like South Goa and popular sandy beaches like Baga are abuzz with activity.

8 Off-Peak Seasons: Special Events and Lower Rates

While the monsoon season and early summer months (April and May) might not be the first choice for beachgoers, they offer unique experiences. The Shigmo Festival in March, celebrating Goan traditions through parades and cultural performances, is a noteworthy event. Additionally, hotel rates are significantly lower during these times, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travellers.

9 Popular Festivals in Goa

Goa’s cultural heritage is deeply influenced by its Portuguese rule, and this is evident in its architecture, cuisine, and way of life. Exploring Old Goa, with its historic churches like St. John’s, offers a glimpse into this fascinating past. Don’t miss out on the unique Goan cuisine, known for its fish curry, spicy flavours, and use of traditional spices from the region’s spice plantations.

11 Wrapping Up

In conclusion, the best time to visit Goa largely depends on your preferences and interests. Whether you’re a sun-seeker looking for the perfect beach vacation, a cultural enthusiast eager to immerse yourself in traditional festivities, or a nature lover keen on exploring the state’s national parks and waterfalls, there’s a time for everyone to enjoy Goa’s diverse offerings. Winter is the peak tourist season in Goa. This is when visitors from around the world flock in to work on their tans. Goa’s mild winters offer the perfect weather to lounge around on the beach without catching a cold or being burnt by a fierce sun.

The beautiful balmy weather is interspersed with the cooling sea breeze that cools down things further. Keeping in mind the nature of your Goa holiday, you are the best judge of the best season to go to Goa.

Most Popular Goa Tour Packages

Goa in winter (november, december, january and february).

Let us try and understand how Goa is during different seasons throughout the year.

This is hnarguably the best time to travel to Goa. The winter calendar of Goa is packed with parties, festivals and cultural events. Goa rouses from its “susegad” and gets busy in doing what it does the best. Pampering the visitors with the best parties and catering to their every whim. Though the average temperature in winter months stays between 15°C to 32°C, the sea breeze cools everything down during the day making it one of best season to visit Goa.

Even the water is not too cold for water sports. You can indulge in an entire day of adrenaline -pumping action only to relax at the same beach in the evenings. Parties continue late into the night, often spilling into the next day. The nights and early mornings could get chilly. It is a good idea to layer up against the chill so that you can adjust your them according to the weather conditions. January turns out to be the coldest winter month.

This is also the season of carnivals, fairs and parades when Goa takes to the streets in its colourful finest. Since this is the peak tourist season and the best time to visit Goa, you will have to do your bookings much in advance. Also be aware that hotel rates and other prices will be higher than usual. You will also face long queues at many of the tourist attractions. Always venture out with a backup plan in place.

Goa in Summer (March, April, May and October)

Goa in summer gets really hot. A combination of the high temperatures and high humidity makes it an uncomfortable time to be in Goa for most people. Although, if you’re looking to experience Goa at affordable prices, this could be the best time to go to Goa. Though the mornings and late nights can be bearable, the day temperatures often reach 40°C on some hot days. Though the water is cool enough for swimming, the beach itself may get too hot for comfort.

Most of the tourist attractions are closed or stay open for brief periods during the day. Afternoons are reserved for siestas as most of Goa sleeps during summer afternoons. Do not even think of venturing out during the afternoon. But if you do, make sure you are suitably covered, wearing a hat and protected with a strong sunscreen lotion. Carry water with you and sip at regular intervals.

The upside of Goa in summers is that it is free of the peak-season crowds. You might just have the entire beach to yourself and there will be no long waits to get a table at some of the best restaurants. If you’re ready to brave the heat, summer could be the best time to visit Goa for you.

Goa during Monsoon (June, July, August and September)

Monsoon is an interesting time to travel to Goa. The summer heat is finally receding, and the heavy rains wash away the dust of the hot months till the heat is only a distant memory. After the heat of the summer months, the smell of the first rains is an intoxicating experience that can seldom be matched by anything else. The constant rainfall infuses new life in the listless earth even as the seas express their joy by behaving like boisterous schoolboys.

With greenery all around, this is the best time to go to Goa if you want to commune with nature. But if you’re looking for the quintessential Goa experience, this is not the time. Most of the beaches and water sports activities are closed due to the rough seas and very few beachside shacks stay open. Swimming and venturing out into the sea is strictly forbidden during this season.

But the rest of Goa really blooms under the rains. A trip to one of the spice plantations is especially recommended. The roads are lined with greenery on both sides and this could be the best time to take a road trip to Goa. But you will have to take extra care while driving as the roads turn slippery. You can still get some pocket-friendly deals during this season. Just don’t expect to be able to enjoy Goa as you would during the tourist season.

Goa manages to retain its magic in every season. It just takes different forms according to the season. While there truly is no single best time to visit Goa, it is up to you to make the best of your trip. Whichever season you choose to visit Goa, you will enjoy your holidays. SOTC has some amazing Goa tour packages   that are tailormade for specific experiences. Book yours today and get ready for a memorable holiday.

When Is The Best Time to Visit Goa in 2024?

' src=

Will Goa be too hot in May? Do I need to carry a sweater to Goa in December or January? When is it off-season in Goa?

Well, these are the questions a lot of you have been asking. And why not! After being locked up in our homes for almost a year and with international travel far away, what better than enjoying a martini while the cool breeze and the waves of the Arabian Ocean wash the lockdown blues away, right?

So after visiting Goa 3 times across various seasons and spending a total of 3+ months there, here’s my take on when you should visit Goa.

When is the Best Time to Visit Goa?

North Goa Beaches

The best time to visit Goa depends on a lot of factors like are you planning to explore around or looking to enjoy water sports in this state. That’s not all, you also have to consider your budget when planning a trip to Goa.

So, to make it easier for you to find the best time to plan a trip to Goa, we have listed down when to visit Goa for a particular budget or activity.

Best Time for Sightseeing in Goa

Generally, the average daytime temperature in Goa is somewhere between 29 and 34 degrees Celsius which is definitely hot. But what I love about Goa is that unlike most Indian cities, Goa doesn’t suffer from extreme heat or humidity and winters can even be a little chilly here.

Due to the monsoon period from June to September, the tourist shops close down here for the few months and the December – January period is the peak time to visit Goa. So, you will find a lot of international tourists here during that time.

So, if you are looking to just explore and make the most of your Goa trip, then I feel November or February to May is the best time for sightseeing in Goa.

Best Time for Budget-Travelers

Let’s face it, not all of us have private jets or numerous credit cards to splurge on a luxury vacay in Goa. So, if you are a backpacker or a budget-traveler like me, then choosing the right month to visit Goa is essential unless you want to end up being broke.

From what I have noticed, the months of June to September and March are considerably cheaper as most tourist businesses are closed at this time. Also, you will find good hotel and airfare deals during this time.

Best Time Weather-Wise

One of the most important things to consider when you are planning a trip to Goa is the weather and how crowded it is going to be. During the winter months, you don’t have to be bogged down by rainfall and you can enjoy the cooler temperature throughout the day.

However, December and January is the peak season in Goa so most of the beaches and hotels are overcrowded and overpriced at this time. If you really wish to enjoy the weather and avoid the tourists, then plan a trip to Goa in early November or early February.

Best Time for Water Sports

For all the adventure and adrenaline junkies out there, there is a lot of amazing water activities to indulge in Goa. From kayaking to scuba diving, you can do so many kickass water sports here but these aren’t open throughout the year.

In fact, the water activities are shut down in Goa from every June to September and open up somewhere around late October. So, if you are planning a trip to Goa to enjoy the water activities here, then you should plan somewhere between November and May.

Best Time for Enjoying Nightlife

Goa is home to some really amazing clubs and bars including the famous Club Cubana, Tito’s, LPK, and so on. And while you might assume that these clubs are open throughout the year, you are actually quite wrong.

If you wish to experience the nightlife in Goa, then I would recommend you to visit Goa between the months of October and May as that is when you have a wide range of options to choose from. In the other months, most of the nightclubs are shut down as the tourist businesses are shut in Goa due to monsoon.

Goa Travel Seasons

Coming to the seasons in Goa, there are typically three travel seasons: peak season, off-season, and the shoulder season. And here is a little that you need to know about each season to decide which time would be best for you.

Shoulder Season (March to May, October)

Out of all the times that I have visited Goa, Shoulder Season is hands down my favorite, and if you are an influencer, someone that loves to avoid the crowd (introverts, I see you), or someone who wants to travel with friends or family on a budget you’d prefer this time as well.

That’s because the beaches are relatively empty. And if you get bored of the beaches, April is also the month of India’s biggest wine festival known as the Great Escapade where you don’t just get to taste some lip-smacking wine but also participate in the ‘Wine Stomping’.

To top it all, from the flight tickets, the stay to the food, cabs, and even hiring a scooty or car, it all costs way lesser.

Though keep in mind that April to May is also peak summer season so if hot weather gets to you, make sure you get yourself an AC room and travel out during the evening. The temperature in summers can vary anywhere between 32-degrees to 40-degrees in the day.

The nights are slightly pleasant and on good days the temperature also drops below 30-degrees to about 26-28-degrees.

Peak Season (November to February)

Do you love to party and meet new people at clubs or late-night beach parties? Or maybe, you are interested in water sports? Or you are just someone who wants to avoid the hard-hitting sun and the humid weather?

Well, then the months of November to March are for you. The reason so many people love to travel to Goa around this time is, yes, the weather.

With the monsoons coming to an end, the temperature during these months varies from 21 to 32-degree Celsius and on most days you’d have a cool breeze blowing around (it is just the perfect weather for a vacation). On most days, even humidity is around 33% which is pretty comfortable.

December and January, in particular, are some of the most happening months (a Christmas and New Year in Goa, is something you won’t forget in Goa).

And I am not just talking about the beaches and party spots but even the streets, churches, and houses are decorated and well lit.

Oh, and it is the ideal season to enjoy water sports as well. Yes, some water sports are available even in the off-season but nothing like during this season.

Between February and March, another thing you’d want to stick around is the Goa Carnival which marks the onset of lent and is one of the most colorful and vibrant events in the state.

Happen to miss the Carnival? Don’t be so glum, chum. There are plenty of other events to rock your world. For example, the Linc Tower Run, or the Monte Music Festival.

Though it isn’t all rosy. During this time, you’ll find stays, cabs, and even flight tickets to be  more expensive than during the off-season or the monsoon season.

Off-Season (June to September)

The monsoon season in Goa is also the off-season to visit this place. While the rain is quite a relief for the locals against the scorching heat, for tourists, it is more of a spoil-sport. That is because most of the beach shacks remain close as a lot of the staff goes to their hometown.

Furthermore, the tides are pretty high all the time which means you cannot enter the water. Even adventure sports like the popular banana boat, parasailing, kayaking, etc. are closed.

Wait, so is Goa not worth the visit during the Monsoons?

Well, that comes down to what you want. If you love seeing nature in its full bloom and would love to enjoy some calm, serene moments at the beach and see the vibrant greenery of Goa, there’s hardly a better time than this.

Yes, it won’t be as happening as it usually is but fun doesn’t always have to be drinking and partying at pubs now, right? Go to the Forts, the beaches, enjoy some local cuisines (Xacuti and Balchao, yummy, yum yum), try cliff jumping, or maybe check out the Sweet Water Lake in Arambol.

The monsoon season is also a great time to catch a glimpse of the popular Dudhsagar falls as the water flow is at its peak. Even November and December are good months to visit this waterfall (trust me, there’s still plenty to keep you busy during the monsoon).

Climate in Goa

Goa experiences three major climates and we will talk about what you can expect from each of these, in terms of sightseeing and activities.

Best Time to Visit Goa

Goa in Winter

As I have mentioned above, the best time to visit Goa is in the winter season, starting from November to February. During this time, the temperature ranges between 20 – 25 degrees Celsius and you can easily relax on the beaches and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Goa.

This is also the time when Goa sees a lot of festivals such as the Sunburn festival so, if you are interested in experiencing that then you should definitely plan a trip to Goa in winter. This is also the best time to visit Goa for water sports so you can indulge in a lot of activities such as sailing, kayaking, scuba diving, wind surfing, and so on.

If you wish to avoid the crowd, then you can head to South Goa and spend time over there. Also, since this is the peak time to visit Goa, make sure that you pre-book everything to avoid getting stuck here.

Goa in Summer

Summers in Goa starts from March and stays till May end and is the hottest and the most humid time to visit Goa.

The average temperature ranges around 35 degrees Celsius and it is slightly hot to enjoy the beaches. But it is a good time to swim in the seas and you even get pretty good deals and discounts on hotels and transportation.

If you are looking for a time to visit Goa when there are no crowds, then this is it.

Goa in Monsoon

Although most people would advise you to not visit Goa in monsoon, I am going to tell you the opposite of that. Monsoon is a great time to visit Goa as the entire place looks fresh and lush green after the rainfall.

This is the perfect time to visit the waterfalls around here as well and if you wish to explore the offbeat places without the tourists, then September end is a good time to plan a trip. The chances of rainfall at that time are considerably less and you can enjoy sightseeing without too many tourists taking up the space here.

Weather in Goa

Here is a brief breakdown of what you can expect to see and do in Goa in each month.

Goa in January

Goa stretches for 100 km but the weather stays the same both in Northern and Southern Goa. January is basically dry winter season in Goa and the average daytime temperature remains around 30 degrees Celsius while the nights can be a bit chilly at around 20 degrees Celsius.

If you are looking to celebrate the New Year in Goa, then this is a great time but be prepared because this is the peak season so the prices of everything are quite high at this time.

Goa in February

If you wish to enjoy the cool, dry climate of Goa minus the crowd, then February is a best month to visit Goa. This is a good time for partying, exploring, and you can find hotels and flights at slightly affordable rates too.

Goa in March

Another great month to visit Goa, March sees no rainfall and is slightly warmer than the previous months. This is the best time to visit Goa for water sports but definitely not a good time for exploring the waterfalls around here.

If you are looking to just chill and enjoy the beaches in Goa, then March is definitely a good time to visit.

Goa in April

April is also a good month to visit Goa, especially if your trip coincides with Easter celebrations. This is one of the few months with no rainfall and the average temperature is somewhere around 32 – 35 degrees Celsius with nights being around 25 degrees Celsius.

This is undoubtedly the hottest month to visit Goa and is also the start to the monsoon season. On average, the temperature ranges around 35 degrees Celsius this month and many tourist businesses begin to shut down during this time as well.

Also, the water sports and swimming is mostly prohibited sometime from this month to October as there is a possibility of cyclone in the next 5 months.

Goa in June

June is officially the start of the monsoon season and the average temperature drops down to around 30 degrees Celsius during the daytime. You can expect heavy rainfall in this month and there are high chances of cyclones as well.

You also have to be careful because your train or bus to Goa might get affected due to the heavy downpour in this month. But you do get really cheap deals during this time as there are barely any tourists or businesses open here.

Goa in July

This is the wettest month of the year in Goa and a lot of hotels and businesses shut down during this month. As a result, you will find it difficult to plan your trip because almost nothing would be open at this time.

And if that wasn’t enough, the roads can become water-logged too that could easily impact your travel plans. Moreover, it is too dangerous to swim in the sea at this time. But if you are visiting Goa for the waterfalls, then this is a great time to visit.

Goa in August

Although it is the end of the monsoon season, you can still expect rainfall during this month and the chances of a cyclone. However, you will experience considerably fewer downpours than the previous months and the temperature is slightly cooler than the previous months as well.

This is the best time to visit Goa if you wish to witness lush green landscape here and want to enjoy a swim in the waterfall and lagoons around here.

Goa in September

This is officially the end of the monsoon season and many tourist businesses start opening up again. There are a few days when it pours heavily but it is very less in comparison to July. This is still not a good time for swimming or water sports but you can easily explore all the sights around here.

Goa in October

In the early days of October, you might witness some rainfall but it is mostly dry during this month. The roads are dry and safe to travel and it is safe to swim in the sea as well. This is the best time to visit the dudhsagar falls in Goa as well since the water level isn’t dangerous for swimming.

Basically, if you wish to avoid the tourist season and want to experience the greener side of Goa, then this is the best month to visit Goa.

Palolem Beach

Goa in November

In terms of weather, November is the best time to visit Goa beaches as the temperature is cool with fewer tourists on the beaches. It is a good time for party enthusiasts as well and adventure junkies. Most importantly, you can explore beaches, churches, forts, waterfalls, everything in Goa at this time.

And there are a lot of festivals held during this month too so if you are lucky, you might get to experience one of those as well.

Goa in December

One of the best months to visit Goa is December as the weather is cool and dry and there are so many festivals to attend here. It can be a slightly expensive and crowded month to visit Goa but you will not be disappointed by the sights and the activities that are accessible to you during this month.

Most importantly, Christmas and New Year in Goa is something that you might not want to miss out on.

From the temperature, weather, activities you can enjoy, to even the prices for the stay, tickets, etc. varies in  Goa based on the season. This makes it confusing for many to know when is the ideal time to visit Goa and I am sure with this guide, you’ll know exactly when you should book your tickets to Goa.

For anyone that loves to party and wants to see Goa at its most happening self, the months from October to February are ideal with December and January being the best of it.

Off-Season is my favorite time. It is perfectly balanced. From the crowd at the beaches, prices, to even the activities, and parties, you can enjoy the best of everything.

And lastly, if you love to see the local side of Goa and want some peace and serenity along with greenery, the monsoon months are made for you.

Goa Weather And Best Time To Visit Goa

India 's favourite party destination has been blessed with some beautifully well-defined seasons. There are 4 distinct phases to the Goa weather - summer, monsoons, post-monsoon summer, and then finally, winter. Tourist season is generally during winter, because most westerners find the famous Goan sun a tad too heavy duty for their comfort in summer! The best time to visit Goa is between November and March when the Goa weather is beautifully balmy & clear with a cool sea breeze blowing through.

Summer (March, April, May & October)

Summer (March, April, May & October): Goa Weather And Best Time To Visit Goa

Summers in Goa are extremely hot with temperatures touching 40 Degrees C (104 Degrees F). Being a coastal state, the humidity levels remain sky high. This may be uncomfortable and take some time to adjust to for tourists from colder countries. The sea remains nice and tepid, and the beaches always have a nice balmy breeze flowing through them. Mornings and evenings are pleasant, but noon to evening can get pretty unbearable, and it's best to remain indoors to avoid the risk of sunburn and heat stroke. Goa is not as crowded during summers and prices tend to be relatively low. If you don't mind the heat, this may be the best time to visit Goa as you can explore this sunny state on a rather economical budget during summer.

Monsoons (June, July, August, September)

Monsoons (June, July, August, September): Goa Weather And Best Time To Visit Goa

The monsoons in Goa typically last from June to September. This is the season during which people avoid Goa, simply because people associate Goa with beaches, sun and sand, and therefore, a rainy day is a huge letdown for beach bums. Unfortunately for them, they don't know what they're missing out on, for Goa is beautiful during the rains! The rainy season in Goa is a magical experience. After the harsh heat of May, the smell of wet earth is incomparable. Paddy fields are at their peak as the scorched, dry land gets infused with a new breath of life. If you're interested in a beautiful and relaxed holiday, with no noise, no crowds and lots of soul searching time, choose Goa in the rains. The entire state is sparkling clean, emerald green, and above all, devoid of hordes of tourists! During the monsoons, Goa receives an average of three to five hours of sunshine during the day. We advise against venturing out into the sea at this time. Not only is the water freezing cold, it is also extremely dangerous during the rains. Explore the many spice plantations, Mollem National Park and Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary to make most of the magic of the monsoons.

Winter (November, December, January, February)

Winter (November, December, January, February): Goa Weather And Best Time To Visit Goa

Winter in Goa is a time of great celebration and by far the best time to visit Goa! When the monsoons end, Goa looks like it's just back from the laundry - every tree and building looks spanking clean. The Goa weather at this time is just perfect and the streets begin to fill up with thousands of holidaymakers, out for their fix of fun, sun and sand. People can pick from a host of watersports as the water is just right at this time of the year. Winter in Goa is a fun season with fairs, parades, festivals and parties that wind up late in the night on the beaches. It is a festive couple of months and all hotels, restaurants and shops are decorated with lights, stars, tinsel and Christmas trees. Also this is the period when maximum weddings and engagements are held in Goa. Hotels are packed to capacity so be sure to book in advance. January is a bit chilly but it is never too cold here. It's good to have a sweater with you if you plan to bike around at night or early in the morning. Don't forget to watch out for the beautiful mists that swirl around the paddy fields and all surrounding streets in the mornings and at night...its gorgeous!

The 12 best things to do in Goa

Joanna Lobo

Jul 30, 2024 • 10 min read

goa tour best month

Find stunning beaches, a rich and varied history, delicious seafood and more in Goa.

If leisure had a poster child, it would be Goa .

One of India ’s smallest states sits on the western coast, bordered by the Arabian Sea. It enjoys popularity for being a destination that offers something for every kind of traveler, from the hippies to the adventure junkies. Need a relaxing vacation? Check. Need to improve mental health and wellbeing? Check. Need to eat your weight in good food? Check. Need to party all night? Check. Need to immerse yourself in culture? Check. Need to get cozy with nature? Check. Goa will help you tick off every item on your to-do list.

Four centuries of colonial rule have fed into the state’s ethos, impacting every aspect of its identity. Goa may have changed dramatically through the years, but there is a new generation of Goans who are hard at work to showcase (and preserve) its traditions. This is a boon for locals, and travelers alike.

Good things come in small packages and Goa offers the best of a travel destination in one neatly wrapped, captivating package.

1. Drink in the local spirit

When in Goa, drink local . Goa’s state drink is feni , a potent homegrown spirit made with the juice of the cashew apple, or the sap of the coconut palm. Cashew feni is double distilled, and the first distillation yields a refreshing drink called urrak – also a hit, especially in summer months. These spirits are only found in Goa and are an integral part of the state’s identity. Start with urrak or a coconut feni , which are milder, or look for a feni cocktail in the nearest bar.

To learn more about this drink visit a cashew farm, Fazenda Cazulo, for a feni tasting conducted by Hansel Vaz. Vaz is the founder of Cazulo Premium Feni, and for a decade, has been working tirelessly to popularise this spirit and bring it recognition. There, you will learn about the process, see the instruments used, taste some expressions and understand how feni pairs with food.

Local tip: Goa is also home to a burgeoning craft spirits movement, and some distilleries like Paul John, Tamras, Maka di, and Goa Brewing Co, are open for tours.

2. Enjoy an intimate evening of Goan-Portuguese culture

Goans love two things with passion: football and music. If seeking a better understanding of the latter, step into a 200-year-old Goan home in Panaji . It’s a house that overlooks the river, and one section has been converted into the Centre for Indo-Portuguese Arts (CIPA).

Part of this is Madra Goa , a small room beautifully decorated with oyster shell panes, tiled awnings, printed umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, and the Goan ghumott (percussion instrument) and the Portuguese guitar. One wall has been painted to look like a street in Lisbon. It is in front of this “street” that celebrated Goan fadista (fado singer) Sonia Shirsat, accompanied by musicians (and sometimes, other fadistas ) takes the stage for an intimate concert. Shirsat introduces each fado and mando and even guides the audiences into singing along. In the interval, snacks are sent around – plates of Indo-Portuguese fare such as bacalhau (salted cod fritters), pork empadinhas (pies), pastéis de nata (egg tarts), and choris (Goa sausages) pao .

Detour: Heritage Home Experiences also conducts cultural concerts featuring the band, Entre Nous, who sing different Goan musical stylings like mandos , dulpods , dekhni and fado .

3. See the preserved body of a centuries-old saint in Old Goa

Old Goa is certainly a must-do for anyone visiting Goa. The erstwhile capital of Portuguese India is home to many old, architecturally-beautiful churches, chapels and protected monuments, some of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The biggest draw here is the Basilica of Bom Jesus , an imposing granite structure where you will find the body of St Francis Xavier, encased in a silver casket. The saint died in 1552 and for years, his body remains well-preserved . It is brought down for an exposition every decade for pilgrims to pay respects. This year is an exposition year, and festivities will continue for a month (21st November to the 5th January).

If you are there during the Exposition, don’t forget to pick up roasted gram, choris pao (sausage bread), and some khaje (a fried sweet of chickpeas and jaggery).

Detour: The 17 CE Convent of Santa Monica in Old Goa houses the Museum of Christian Art ( MoCA ), an accessible museum showcasing Indo-Portuguese art sourced from churches and private collections.

4. Celebrate a monsoon festival in the state’s off-season

The monsoon months of June to September are typically off-season, and bring with them a slew of festivals that aren’t just religious, but incorporate and honour the environment too.

It starts with São João in June, where people celebrate the feast of St. John de Baptist by jumping into water bodies. Sangodd celebrates Goa’s fishing community, and the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, and includes a parade too. Chikal Kalo sees the male villagers of Marcel play games in the mud, which they believe Hindu deity Krishna played as a child. In August, the island of Divar celebrates a festival of flags called Bonderam – it includes a parade, much song and dance and mock fights between people where they try to knock down each other’s flags.

Local tip: Goan tour group, Soul Travelling , conduct tours offering visitors an in-depth look at these festivals.

High-angle view of Arambol beach.

5. Learn to surf on Goa’s beginner waves

Surfing is slowly becoming a popular sport in Goa. There are surf schools dotting Morjim, Ashvem and Mandrem in the North and Agonda in the South offering one-off classes, and training. Surfing in Goa is recommended because of its long coastline, a large number of surf schools, decent lifeguard infrastructure, and a gentle sea with mellow waves – surf teachers call them "beginner’s waves". Lessons are held in the morning and throughout the year, bar the monsoons. Popular surf schools include Vaayu Surf and SUP, Banana Surf School, On Da Wave , Octopus Surf School , Surf Wala, Swell Cats Surf Club , and Mumu Surf School .

Planning tip: Surf schools like Surfwala , Vaayu Kula , and Banana Surf School offer accommodation options, and a place to eat/ drink.

6. Listen to some vinyl at the state’s only vinyl bar

Some smooth jazz, a delicious cocktail in hand, and a dog at your feet… if this sounds like a perfect evening, then For The Record-Vinyl Bar (FTR) in Panaji should be on your list. Started by vinyl lover, architect and musician Buland Shukla, FTR is an intimate space that prides itself on its music – all vinyls; drinks – championing Indian craft spirits and brews like mahua and feni ; and food – features his experiments with fermentation. FTR regularly hosts listening sessions, and small concerts. Go there in the afternoon, and you will likely meet his friendly dog, Django.

Detour: Right next door is the workspace, gallery and store of Thomas Louis, often referred to as Thomas the Potter . His creations make for lovely gifts, and he regularly conducts pottery classes.

A Mugger Crocodile (Crocodilus palustris) with its jaw's wide open in green marshland

7. See a croc in the wild

While dolphin watching is a popular activity in Goa, a far more adventurous one involves riding along water bodies looking for crocodiles. Crocodiles are revered, and considered a guardian spirit in Goa. The freshwater mugger is common to the state, and can be found in the Cumbharjua Canal. A typical ride on this stretch introduces you to the backwaters, the thriving mangrove habitat in the canal, and the marine life it sustains, including birds, crabs and crocodiles. The latter are usually found sunbathing on the shore, camouflaging well with the mud. Though fearsome in sight, they are quite used to human presence.

Planning tip: John’s Boat Tours organizes a Crocodile Dundee: a 4-5 hour tour with birdwatching and snacks.

8. Go forest bathing in Mollem

Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary is the state’s largest protected wildlife area, and home to Mollem National Park. The forest is part of the biodiversity hotspot that is the Western Ghats, and home to varied flora and fauna. Here, you can look for Goa’s state symbols: the state bird – a flame-throated bulbul, state animal – the gaur, and state tree – crocodile bark tree. Venture deep within the forest and you will find Goa’s oldest temple, the basalt Tambdi Surla. There are seasonal and perennial waterfalls, accessible by a short hike – the most popular is Dudhsagar.

Planning tip: If you fancy spending a night in the forest, without distraction, seek out Jungle Trails Homestay . A women-led homestay with basic facilities (no wifi or TV) with vegetarian food, they can organize bird-watching tours, and folk dance performances.

Colourful spices on display at Anjuna flea market in Goa.

9. Brush up on your spice knowledge at a spice farm

It is one of those typical tourist activities to do in Goa, but a visit to a spice plantation doesn’t have to be boring. You start with a tour that introduces you to the spices that Goans love to cook with, including the tirphal (related to Sichuan pepper) and see some herbs and medicinal plants. The tour is typically followed by a Goan lunch. Many farms also offer that little extra. At Tanshikar Spice Farm , you get to see an old Goan mud house, with a cow dung floor and learn about the houses of the time. There are pools and water slides, and a zip line at Nandanvan Spice Farm . NV Eco Farm has wooden cottages for stay, and adventure activities like rock climbing and zip lining.

Detour: Step out of Kushavati Organic Farm , and you will find one of Goa’s oldest historic sites: the Usgalimal petroglyphs, dating back to the Stone Age.

10. Seek out a Goan village that resurfaces once a year

As villages go, Curdi certainly stands out for being the only one that remains submerged through the year, coming up for air in summer. Curdi was once a flourishing agricultural village. When the Selaulim Dam was built nearby, the village was one of many to be submerged by its waters. The villagers were moved out, but the skeleton of the village remains. Every summer, when Curdi resurfaces, villagers head back to celebrate their old home. You can visit Curdi on your own, and see the remains of the once flourishing village, including a chapel, a temple and some houses.

Detour: The Selaulim Dam lies a few kilometers away and is well-known for its main feature: a duckbill spillway.

A Goan fish Thali in a beach side restaurant at Palolem beach, GOA.

11. Eat some fish, curry and rice

When in Goa, eat like the Goans. The staple meal here is fish, curry and rice. It’s a simple meal that utilizes the best that Goa has to offer – the bounty of the sea, local rice, and fish curries made with coconut, tirphal , local chillies, and kokum. These meals are found in most restaurants and some shacks but are best eaten at thali restaurants, small unassuming places serving fresh fish. A Goan thali has rice, curry, fried fish, some vegetables, a salad, kismur (dried shrimp salad) and solkadi (a digestive drink made with kokum). It’s a nourishing, filling meal that is best eaten by hand.

Detour: If seeking a delicious meal with a side of history, seek out Shubhra Shankwalker of Aai’s . The home chef organizes sit-down lunches at her farm, which feature an elaborate spread of Goan Saraswat food that is seasonal, and fresh.

12. Shop for food souvenirs at the local markets

Every avid traveler knows that the best way to understand a place is to visit its markets. Goa’s markets are an interesting riot of color, sound, and aromas. Most villages have a small market place, but the municipal markets in the cities are also worth a visit. Mapusa , Panaji , and Margao markets are divided into zones, dedicated to fish or fruit and vegetables, or flowers. These markets are a good option for those seeking food souvenirs – besides produce, you can also buy cheap but quality food souvenirs like cashew nuts and feni , Goa sausages, local bread, Goan sweets and snacks.

On Fridays, pay a visit to Mapusa’s market, which sees vendors from across Goa out to sell their wares.

Local tip: In May, many of the markets, like the one at Banastarim, also offer items for purumenth – the practice of stocking up for the monsoons – like dried fish, dried mango and jackfruit seeds, chillies, rice, pickles and more. During Chaturthi season, you will find the markets stocked with fruit, vegetables and herbs for the matoli , a wooden canopy suspended over the idol and laden with fresh produce.
