LGBTQ+ Berlin: 13 best gay bars, clubs and saunas

Thanks to an LGBTQ+ scene that has been thriving for years, the best gay bars, clubs and saunas in Berlin are a must

Nathan Ma

Berlin has earned its stripes as one of the great gay capitals of the world, with a huge LGBTQ+ community, one-of-a-kind queer bars and an attitude to life that encourages inhabitants to be whoever they please. Over time, this has lent itself to a ton of fantastic club nights, bars and saunas, and new venues are popping up all the time.

Berlin is a city that is always moving forward, often at a lightning pace. Things move so quickly, it can be hard to keep up with. But we’ve got you covered. Our Berlin writer Nathan Ma knows this city like the back of his hand, and has handpicked the best LGBTQ+ spots all over the city for cocktails, dancing and a lot of queer joy. Here’s our picks of the best.

RECOMMENDED: 🍷 The best bars in Berlin 🪩 The best clubs in Berlin 💃 The best nightlife spots in Berlin 🏘️ The best Airbnbs in Berlin

This guide was recently updated by Berlin-based writer Nathan Ma .  At Time Out, all of our  travel guides  are written by local writers who know their cities inside out. For more about how we curate, see our  editorial guidelines .

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

The best of LGBTQ+ Berlin

1.  monster ronson’s.

  • Friedrichshain

Monster Ronson’s

A local legend, Monster Ronson’s Ichiban Karaoke has undergone a facelift in recent years, but the on-stage stripper pole is very much still intact. There are plenty of private booths for shyer songbirds, but the real magic happens in the main room. The drag shows on Tuesdays are also worth your while. Arrive early for the new talent showcase (always a treat) and stay for the seasoned performers later.

2.  Zum Schmutzigen Hobby

Zum Schmutzigen Hobby

Tucked away in a busy post-industrial complex in Friedrichshain, Zum Schmutzigen Hobby is both bar and club in one. You’ll find the cream of the Berlin queer scene here, as well as the occasional international celeb slumming it in style (Rupert Everett and, erm, Tara Reid have both been spotted here). The regular drag shows are a favourite.

3.  Betty F***

Betty F***

It was over a century ago that the homosexuals of the Wilhelmine period would congregate around the bars and cafés of Mitte’s Mulackstrasse. Today, as one of the few gay bars left in Mitte, Betty F*** remains a favourite for gays, hipsters and fashionistas looking for a kickstart to the evening.

4.  Schwules Museum

  • Specialist interest

Schwules Museum

As well as being one of Berlin’s most prized  museums , the Schwules has a quiet café for those looking for something more downtempo. Pop into one of the rotating exhibitions on gay, lesbian and trans history, peruse the abundant books and magazines stored upstairs, and then chill out over a quiet coffee or beer.

5.  Berghain

Berghain

Opened in 2004 on the border between the Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain districts, Berghain has long been known for its techno and minimal techno music scene. It’s just as celebrated for its queer-friendly rooms that are dedicated to sexual pleasure-seeking.  All of this has contributed to the Berlin club’s extreme and one-of-a-kind reputation that has travellers desperate to enter its front doors.

6.  SilverFuture

SilverFuture

With its warm open-door policy, SilverFuture is as friendly and welcoming as its clientele. Stop by for a beer and stick around for the crowd that streams in as the night descends. This relatively cosy spot can get quite packed, but that’s all part of the fun. Make yourself at home while taking in the maximalist décor.

7.  Möbel Olfe

Möbel Olfe

It’s an odd location for a gay bar, wedged among Turkish snack bars in a down-at-heel 1960s housing development, but this unpretentious space has been packed since it opened, mainly with gay and lesbian beer lovers, thanks to the excellent range of brews on offer. The crowd has swelled in recent years, with students, artists and hipsters now in the know, but the infamous Thursday nights are still a blast.

8.  Ficken 3000

Hotfoot it to one of Berlin’s most notorious cruising bars for a heady taste of the city’s queer scene. With raging parties and a labyrinthine dark room, there’s a reason Ficken 3000 has become a legend among locals looking for a drink, dance and a flamboyant good time. The bar’s entrance on Urbanstrasse is relatively discreet – look for the rainbow flag painted above its door and ring the buzzer if you dare.

9.  Der Boiler

Der Boiler

A mainstay on the Berlin sauna scene, Kreuzberg’s Der Boiler is renowned for its lively steam room and maze-like cruising area for men. Cabins, saunas and chill-out areas combine to provide a rather opulent experience, and the clientele is always a good mix. Clean, cool, contemporary interiors make this the ideal spot to hunt down some steamy action.

10.  Südblock

Südblock

A former beer-slinger from Möbel-Olfe opened this bar for Kreuzberg’s increasingly large gay population in 2010. Located under the round- about housing development at Kottbusser Tor, the mixed (but girl-heavy) crowd enjoy nightly drinks and dancing, as well as many one-off rock parties. The Kottywood party is a popular go-to for gays and lesbians looking to cap a Friday night grinding to Latin, retro and pop music. Südblock also serves food, ranging from breakfast to midnight snacks.

Berlin - gay patchwork quilt

Berlin is the capital and the largest city of Germany, the second most populous (after London) and the fifth largest city in the European Union. A population of Berlin is 3.7 million people (data for 2018). An average age of a Berliner is 42 years. About 500 thousand foreign residents live in Berlin, which is about 14% of the capital's population. Modern Berlin is a major European metropolis, the city of diverse architecture, museums and palaces, interesting sights and lively nightlife. Berlin is a bit like a patchwork quilt. Here you can see the sights of different historical periods: from a few preserved medieval buildings to ultramodern metal structures. This is the city of stunning architectural and cultural heritage, exploring of which can take months. Berlin is a treasure trove for a gay traveler. The diversity of spots and events oriented to and LGBT are difficult to find anywhere else. Traditionally in Berlin there are three gay areas. Two of them are located in the western part of Berlin (Schöneberg and Kreuzberg) and the third (Prenzlauer Berg) is eastern. Most gay hotels, bars, cafes and shops are located in the gay district Schöneberg, where dance halls only for men were open in the 1920s.

#9 Gay Berlin: Neighborhood Guide

Where to go for brunch, dinner or a drink.

Berlin has several exciting LGBTQIA-friendly neighborhoods to check out: Schöneberg, Kreuzberg, and Friedrichshain just to name a few.

👉 Schöneberg

The heart of Berlin’s LGBTQ+ community is Schöneberg. Back in 1897, the world’s first-ever LGBTQ+ organisation, the “Scientific-Humanitarian Committee”, was founded right there.

Schöneberg is home to some of the oldest gay bars, such as Tom’s Bar , Prinzknecht ,  Heile Welt  and  Hafen . After a night out we recommend you stop by one of these hip cafes: Romeo & Romeo , Cafe Kawil Kunde or Cafe Berio . When it comes to a delicious lunch or dinner you should definitely check out Fritz & Co or Sissi .

👉 Kreuzberg

Kreuzberg is yet another popular district for the LGBTQ+ community. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Kreuzberg resurfaced from the ruins and started to attract more and more unique individuals over time. Today it hosts one of the largest LGBTQ+ communities in the city, as well as amazing gay bars like Möbel Olfe and Roses , trendy cafes like Südblock and a gay museum as well – the  Schwules Museum .

The popularity of Kreuzberg amongst the LGBTQ+ community grew so big that the “cool kids” started moving further to the south – to the Neukölln neighborhood. Gay bars worth a visit here are Cafe Melitta Sundström  or SilverFuture . If you’re looking for a nice place to grab a quick bite, check out Café K-Fetisch or Alaska .

👉 Prenzlauer Berg

In the 1960s, Prenzlauer Berg was famous for being the hub of East Germany’s gay scene. Here you will find trendy gay bars like  Flax  and popular gay brunch spots like  Schall & Rauch.

👉 Friedrichshain

Friedrichshain – the raw and underground district of Berlin – is the neighborhood where you’ll definitely find some of the best clubs in the entire city.

Berlin Travel Guide

The ultimate guide to the best things to do and see in berlin.

Without a doubt, Europe’s coolest city, Berlin has it all: 24-hour-nightlife, food from all over the world, affordable prices and is full of beautiful people. It’s not a typical European city with a historical centre (that was largely destroyed in the war), but rather has many vibrant and distinct districts to explore.

Whether you’re coming for a weekend, a week or planning to move here, start here with my basic Berlin travel tips, or jump down below to read my latest Berlin travel blogs .

When to Visit

Berliners say that to deserve the summer, you have to stay through the winter, which can be long indeed! Berlin summers can be glorious, with long nights, perfect weather to sit outside in the many parks and loads of things happening outside.

Being such a big city with so many interesting things going on, visiting any time in the year will guarantee there’s something fascinating happening! It can be rainy pretty much any time of year in Berlin, though, so make sure to bring at least a light rain jacket, even in the summer!

Cool Things To Do

Bauhaus Archiv –  Documenting the history of the Bauhaus design movement from the early and mid 20th century, this museum is unlike many of the others in Berlin (even the quirkier ones ) and a must for any lovers of design and architecture. The collection includes teaching materials, models, plans, photographs and a library, all fully open to the public and giving you a fascinating insight into this iconic period of German design.

Sunday brunch –  Berliners take their Sunday brunch very seriously. Anywhere from 11am till 3pm, you’ll find most cafés and restaurants full to the brim with locals lazily eating, drinking and chatting. Many places offer all-you-can-eat buffets, several with vegan brunch offerings where you can easily spend the first part of your Sunday recovering from the night before.

Berghain  – This iconic club, and perhaps the ‘coolest in the world’ is not to be missed if you’re a lover a techno and unabashed hedonism. Surprisingly, perhaps the best time might be to go on Sunday afternoon after brunch, as it stays open all weekend long and is by then in full swing without the three hour line to get in.

Just make sure to dress mostly in black, don’t turn up drunk or in a large group and don’t stare at your phone while waiting to be let in.

LGBTQ – Gay Berlin Travel Guide

Gay-friendly businesses can be found all over Berlin, though historically the neighborhood of Schöneberg was the center of gay life. Nowadays there are gay bars all over the city, even in the places you might least expect.

The new gay Berlin is now mostly centered in Neukölln where you’ll find gay clubs, queer bars and even occasional drag shows. These are a few of the best things you should know about:

“London Calling” at Schwuz – Every first Friday of the month, this indie Brit-pop night at one of Berlin’s most laid-back gay clubs is my favorite night there. The crowd is pretty mixed, but tends to be mostly cute alternative boys.

Silver Future –  One of the queerest bars in Berlin, this cosy spot in Neukölln (where else?) is ideal for meeting some new people, having an intimate chat or starting a night out. With its quirky and oh-so-Berlin style, it’s guaranteed to get you in the mood.

Der Boiler –  Perhaps the nicest gay sauna in Europe, Boiler is the perfect place to come and relax, by yourself, on a date or with friends. Of course, you can find some action here (especially in the steam room) but it’s also nice enough of a space that coming just to use the sauna facilities is just as worthwhile!

Berlin Hotel Deals

Berlin has plenty of cool and quirky hotels, as well as all the big chains you’d expect. They can get full when there’s a conference or special event in town, so consider booking in advance. I’ve found that using Booking.com, Agoda.com or Hotels Combined can be useful for finding last-minute deals.
