Lecture at Royal Society

In July, Luke gave this 25minute long talk at the Royal Society, London. Rather than a formal lecture, it was designed to inspire both arts and science specialists as well as families in attendance.

Made in stainless steel, using NASA accurate topographic data from the moon’s surface, Mirror Moon allows the public to feel and touch every crater, valley and mountain. As well as allowing everyone to explore the Moon visually and through touch, this artwork will also be great for those in our society who are visually impaired.

The artwork will first be presented at the  Royal Society in London this July.

Ascension is a memorial arts project in memory of those who lost their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic. On Saturday 23 rd March, the four-year anniversary since the first UK lockdown began, specially made kites were flown at a small memorial event in Bristol. This allowed the participants an opportunity to remember their loved ones, celebrate their lives and grieve their loss at a time when much of the world is moving on from the effects of the pandemic. World Famous Gaia artwork coming to Bath Abbey for Treasuring Creation Festival

Bath Abbey is hosting Luke Jerram’s touring Gaia artwork from 18 th September to 29 th October 2023, as part of the Treasuring Creation Festival . Measuring seven metres in diameter, Gaia features detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface and provides the opportunity to see our planet floating in three-dimensions. The Treasuring Creation Festival will focus on appreciating and caring for our planet.

Gaia by Luke Jerram

Gaia will be suspended underneath the tower in the centre of the Abbey, providing an awe-inspiring view as people enter the building. The artwork was previously on display at Wells Cathedral.

Gaia creates a sense of the Overview Effect , which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

The artwork is 1.8 million times smaller than the real Earth with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 18km of the Earth’s surface.

A specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award winning Composer Dan Jones will be played alongside the sculpture. In Greek Mythology Gaia is the personification of the Earth.

Bath Abbey previously hosted Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon during November and December 2021, which proved to be very popular, with visitors coming from around the world to view the artwork.

There will also be a screening of the film Race for the Future by local film director James Levelle, who will be presenting the screening and taking questions afterwards.

Revd Stephen Girling, Abbey Missioner and Chair of Bath Abbeys’ Eco Group says:

“Gaia represents this wonderful earth which Christians believe is a gift of God who calls us to be good stewards in co-operation with him and one another. In the breathtaking setting of the Abbey, the Treasuring Creation Festival will provide many and varied opportunities for celebration and for learning how we can better work together.”

Gaia Planet Earth UK Tour Dates

Last Updated on March 13, 2024 by Suzy McCullough

First, there was a scale version of the Moon touring around the world. Now there’s a scale version of our planet earth and it’s touring around a few places in the UK. It will be presented in art exhibitions and festivals around the world over the coming years and it is a great thing to see as a family.

Gaia is an artwork by the UK artist Luke Jerram. The installation measures seven metres in diameter and it was created from 120dpi detailed NASA images of the Earth’s surface. You will get to see our planet floating in front of you in three dimensions.

Gaia Planet Earth UK Tour Dates

The piece has been created to give you a sense of awe for the planet which only astronauts get to experience in real life. The artist hopes that the artwork may provide the viewer with a new perspective of our place on the planet, a sense that societies of the Earth are all interconnected and that we have a responsibility toward one another.

As well as the sculpture there is a specially made surround sound composition by BAFTA award-winning composer Dan Hones. The sculpture is 1.8 million times smaller than the real earth. They will be exhibiting Gaia in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Luke Jerram was also the creator of the popular Museum of the Moon sculpture which has also toured the world. We were lucky enough to see it at the Natural History Museum in London. It was certainly quite a wondrous thing to see and I would imagine this will be just as interesting to see.

Still Here by Gaia (2018)

  • The Avenue Concept x RIHPHC Public Art Tour

Providence, Rhode Island 02906, United States

Created By: The Avenue Concept

Information

Building name: 32 Custom House. Lot was home to the Daniels Building

Architect: William R Walker

Date built: 1873

Perhaps considered the most iconic mural in the current Downtown portfolio, Gaia’s Still Here is a portrait of a contemporary Narragansett woman named Lynsea Montanari holding a portrait of her tribal elder, Wampanoag and Narangansett leader Princess Red Wing. Lynsea wears contemporary clothing in lieu of traditional regalia, an inference to the community of Indigenous people currently living, working, and holding tradition in modern-day Providence.

The location of the 32 Custom House building (and the parking lot that was the former Daniels building) provides a sweeping view of the wall from the Weybosset bridge and river. According to the City Department of Art, Culture & Tourism, “Weybosset Street was a site where three important Indian trails met, one coming down from the north, the second up from the southeast Mount Hope region called the Wampanoag Trail, and the third up from Connecticut in the southwest called the Pequot Trail.”

Gaia’s opening idea for the mural was to consider erasure, considering the landscape that existed before colonial settlement, asking the question of whose history gets recorded and whose doesn’t. As he captures in his artist interview (viewable above), through partnership and permission seeking with the Tomaquag Museum, the work evolved into a narrative that captures a living person holding legacy and tradition, advocating for human rights and environmental justice, a people still here across time that continues today.

About the Artwork:

Princess Redwing was a Narragansett and Wampanoag elder, activist, historian, folklorist and curator. While the portraits take center stage in the piece, the native flora that surrounds the figures holds deep symbolism for the community:

Sunflowers carry a long history in the Western Hemisphere and are an important local symbol as a crop grown by the Narragansett Tribe.

Strawberries are of particular importance to Lynsea and invoke the Montanari family crest and heritage. The strawberry is endemic to the region, but additionally it is a symbol of love and friendship. Lynsea’s earrings are also strawberry shapes.

Pink Lady’s Slipper flower pays homage to Lorén Spears, educator, activist, author, and artist as well as executive director of theTomaquag Museum. Her Narragansett name is Lady Slipper. The large wildflower grows in RI.

The little deer is the only element not to scale. Endemic to the region, deer represent a valuable resource for Indigenous communities.

Red-winged Blackbirds , the bird for which Princess Red Wing was named, represent companions of ancestral history, keeping company with the next generation into the 21st century to inspire stewardship and leadership.

After the lockdown, there has been a renewed respect for nature.

Abraham lincoln painting featured at hamptons art fair victim of heist: ‘lessons learned’.

Abe Lincoln painting

Abraham Lincoln continues to have pop cultural moments 159 years after his time.

After Page Six reported that a new documentary posits that the 16th American president was gay — and Broadway’s hottest show “Oh, Mary!” cheekily portrays Honest Abe as a not-so-honest hubby — an eye-catching painting Lincoln was hanging at the recent Hamptons Art Fair.

Created by Dallas-based artist Lindsay Ekstrom, the $36,000 portrait of Lincoln called “Forever Friday” shows the Great Emancipator dapperly dressed in a floral tux jacket with a baller Rolex, a blinged out diamond ring and personalized cufflinks.

Abe Lincoln painting

Ekstrom — who specializes in dandified or hipsterized portraits of cultural icons like Albert Einstein with tattoos, Frida Kahlo in overalls or George Washington in a Louis Vuitton jacket — has also painted Lincoln in an Adidas track jacket and jeans.

The Lincoln piece that hung at the Hamptons fair had a turbulent history itself! The piece had been damaged in an apparent art heist gone wrong.

The artist explained on Instagram that in early 2022, “I was commissioned to paint a George Washington and an Abraham Lincoln to be hung side by side in a board room. After they were finished, they were crated, and left with a [courier].”

Painting

But while, “George Washington arrived in Utah unscathed… Abe, unfortunately was nowhere to be found. ‘Forever Friday’ had been heisted! After weeks of investigation we found the truth of what happened and the painting of Abe was recovered. By then, I had repainted the piece ‘Forever Friday’ for our collectors, so George was no longer alone.”

Ekstrom wrote: “Lessons learned: 1. Do NOT advertise the contents of the crate on the outside,” since the crate said, “Rad art inside, fragile!”

She also wrote: “2. If you are an art thief, be more careful when breaking into the crate of an original painting.”

The painting that showed is the Hamptons was the one that had been pilfered and recovered, and had a gash in the canvas when it was found.

Ekstrom’s husband and the business director of the couple’s gallery, LX Artworks , told us: “We took that piece back, [and] because she loved that piece so much we re-stretched it, she repainted the canvas.” He added of the artist, “She was never going to sell that,” but then recently decided to show the reimagined Lincoln piece in the Hamptons.

Aaron also explained how Lindsay has a special affinity for Lincoln as a subject.

“She painted Abe as her very first portrait,” he said. “She read his biography and just fell in love with him.”

Khabarovsk Architecture

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk architecture surprises with its harmonious blending of varying types and styles. This is due in large part to major changes which the city underwent in the mid-19th-early 20th centuries in conjunction with developments in the political, economic, scientific and technical spheres. The search for new trends in architecture came after the death of the classicism style, which had dominated the Russian Empire and the wider world for centuries. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the practice of mixing eclectic architectural styles began to emerge, leading to an era of amazing stylistic improvisations.

During the final decades of Romanov reign, many educational institutions for architects and engineers were opened. As a result, the face of numerous Russian cities began to change rapidly. Art Nouveau - a new, modern trend that absorbed several preceding styles – had come to dominate the architectural scene.

Many Art Nouveau buildings can still be seen in central Khabarovsk. These include:

  • Takeuchi apartment building (5 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Esplanade Hotel (18 Muravyov-Amursky Street)
  • Luhta apartment building (84 Komsomolskaya Street)
  • Zandau apartment building (34 Muravyov-Amursky Street)

Khabarovsk also has many Gothic buildings, a style distinguished by its elegance and attention to detail. Every element of Gothic architecture emphasize a vertical orientation, as seen in the massive walls and columns, round arches and wide windows which contrast with narrow towers, pointed peaks and lancet windows.

Khabarovsk’s Gothic architecture is best represented by the artillery warehouse buildings located at 16 Komsomolskaya Street. Another notable example is the Red Guard Headquarters (105 Komsomolskaya Street), which has been preserved in its original form. The complex consists of two identical two-story brick buildings with unusual motifs containing pseudo-gothic elements.

Also of note is the early 20th-century Treasury Building, a luxurious red brick structure with openwork balconies that exudes an architectural grace.

Khabarovsk also has many Soviet-era buildings which were mostly designed in the constructivism style. Characterized by their enormous size and grotesque shapes, they often occupy most of the block and dominate the surrounding space.

During your Khabarovsk excursion, be sure to appreciate its unique architectural heritage by going for a walk downtown .

Khabarovsk Attractions

Khabarovsk, Russia

The layout of Khabarovsk is very simple: its 3 main streets of Lenin, Muravyov-Amursky and Seryshev pass through the downtown area, while Ussuriysky and Amur Boulevards run perpendicular to them. A distinctive feature of Khabarovsk are its many hills, so we recommend wearing comfortable shoes for your walk.

Begin your walking tour of Khabarovsk from the train station, where you can see the monument to Yerofey Khabarov, the famous explorer for whom the city is named. Nearby is a sculpture of a double-headed eagle, erected in memory of soldiers, officers and builders of the Far Eastern Railway. Moving from the station along Amur Boulevard you will reach the central market, just past which is Lenin Square. A spacious area with a granite fountain in the center, it is the main plaza of Khabarovsk and the site of the city’s Christmas and New Year celebrations. Next to the square is Dynamo Park, famous for its three ponds and Ferris wheel.

From Lenin Square, move along Muravyov-Amursky Street to reach Amur Embankment, passing most of Khabarovsk’s famous 19th-20th century buildings along the way. Descend to the embankment via two grand staircases or make a small detour onto Shevchenko Street, where you can follow the slope until you reach the embankment’s main stretch. Among other things, the area is home to the House of Officers and three museums.

As you move along the embankment through a park you will come across the city symbol of Khabarovsk, a building set on a steep cliff above the Amur River. It was at the foot of this cliff that the founders of a military post, the first semblance of civilization in the area, first landed.

After reaching the river and walking along Ussuriysky Boulevard to Turgenev Street, turn right to reach Glory Square. Here you will find another famous Khabarovsk landmark, Transfiguration Cathedral, along with a magnificent view of the Amur River and its dreamy islands. Glory Square concludes the main walking route of Khabarovsk, but from here you can reach any part of the city by public transport or taxi .

Khabarovsk Cultural Life

Khabarovsk, Russia

Khabarovsk entertainment centers around its many theaters and museums. Visit Khabarovsk Museum of Local Lore to get a better glimpse of city and regional life. Children and adults alike will want to visit Fishes of Amur River Museum, an aquarium which is home to some 90 species of the underwater world. To catch the vibe of local artists, head to the Far Eastern Art Museum.

There are several theaters in Khabarovsk, each of which is worth visiting:

  • Khabarovsk Regional Puppet Theater;
  • Triad Pantomime Theater;
  • Khabarovsk Regional Philharmonic;
  • White Theater, and others.

In addition, Khabarovsk offers several concert halls, culture houses, cinemas and art institutions .

Khabarovsk Souvenirs

While the city’s souvenir selection is not as diverse as in other Russian cities, guests can still find something suited to their tastes on their tour to Khabarovsk. Amur River and the Sea of Japan offer an abundance of seafood that can be tasted on the spot or brought home in dried or smoked form. Yet it is the rich culture of the local indigenous peoples which provides the largest selection of national souvenirs.

If you’re looking for an original gift, traditional Nanai slippers are comfortable and warm. Sewn from leather or fabric and decorated in a bright, colorful style before being trimmed with fur, they make the perfect house shoes in winter. Traditional decorations include amulets which are made from animal bones, fur or fabrics and decorated with ribbons and colored beads.

Standard souvenirs like plates, magnets, mugs and flasks stamped with images of Khabarovsk or its coat of arms can be purchased in souvenir shops, which are mostly located downtown and at the airport and railway station.

LAURA HICKLI (Progressive Art Pop)

Sounds like: Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Weyes Blood

Laura Hickli (Mohkínstsis/Calgary) is an internationally touring progressive art pop songstress known for her tightly arranged dreamy soundscapes, exquisite vocals, evocative lyrics, and emotionally powerful performances. The classically trained pianist was homeschooled in a conspiracy-laden religious household where she honed her ability to reflect deeply felt emotions through dynamic, textured, and technical songwriting and production.

During the tour of her latest record ‘Both Feet In The World, At Least I Can Stand,' (North Pole Records) Laura and her band suffered a serious motor vehicle accident that left Laura with PTSD and a traumatic head injury. After nearly a year in recovery, she emerges with gripping and exceedingly personal new music birthed during her chaotic grieving process.

Hickli has a knack for creating art out of life's ebbs and offering a small gift of resilience to the returning tides. A performer in several award-winning projects, Hickli’s personal works continue to receive radio play on CBC, BBC+, Top Album of the Year awards, and accolades from The Big Takeover, Cups N Cakes and more.

Currently preparing to record her new album ‘stranger to myself’ at The National Music Centre and embark on a two-month international tour this summer, Hickli’s developing story offers a fresh and inviting look at what life can be, while carrying the foundations of her spellbindingly intimate, yet explosive brand of dark process-music.
