Pack Faster & Better With This Universal Printable Packing List

  • Updated: 04/08/2024

Use this free universal packing list for any trip , including road and city trips or lengthier hiking, international, or beach getaways.

I am on a constant quest to streamline all the prep that needs to happen before travel. And am a fan of getting there and having fun, not of all the tiresome things that need to happen before we leave.

So, I created this family-friendly universal packing list , ideal for carry-on or checked-bag travelers. Find the downloadable and printable list below.

Table Of Contents

Universal packing list printable.

Put away the panic of pre-trip prep with this printable packing list . I love reusable and comprehensive checklists because they let me turn my overloaded brain off and go fully automatic when getting ready for a trip.

Download or print the easier-to-read packing list plus a medical kit with a larger font size that prints to three pages. Or opt to download and print the same list with a smaller font that prints to two pages.

  • Easier-to-read with larger font Universal Packing List & Medical Kit (3 pages)
  • Universal Packing List (on one page) & Medical Kit (2 pages)

How This List Works

Download and print the list. Write the number of each item needed. Check off the items as you pack them.  Because I designed the list to include several types of travelers—solo, business, family, and long-term—depending on which type you are and whether you plan to travel light or check a bag , you may not need every item listed.

Pros & Cons of Carry-On Vs. Checking a Bag

Which camp you fall into— carry-on or checked bag —when you fly depends heavily on your travel preferences and priorities.

Most frequent travelers I know are strictly carry-on only for these five reasons:

  • Faster exits from airports
  • Nearly eliminating the chance of lost luggage
  • No or low bag fees
  • Greater transportation flexibility to change flights at the last minute due to delays or cancellations
  • Easier maneuverability

However, we are firmly a checked-bag family . We choose to check bags for these reasons:

  • To bring massive amounts of our own dermatologist-recommended sunscreen to protect our fair-skinned family.
  • Pack more clothes so we can minimize spending valuable vacation time doing laundry .
  • To ensure more relaxed packing . A no-holds-barred checked bag gives us ample room for extras , such as a foldable yoga mat or a complete medical kit .

Although we have experienced complications with delayed or damaged checked bags over the years, the issues have yet to be insurmountable . And sometimes, baggage delays when they happen—lead to unexpected shopping trips and memorable souvenirs.

Plus, since we always carry valuables and essential items with us , avoid problematic connecting flights , and always buy trip insurance , which includes lost baggage coverage, we feel comfortable continuing to roll the dice and taking a chance checking our bags.

When I travel independently with friends, especially on shorter trips, I almost exclusively fly carry-on. My preferred TSA-compliant bag is the hybrid wheeled Osprey 36 Fairview . I like the flexibility it offers, to pull it along or carry it like a backpack. The men’s version is the Osprey Farpoint 36 . Also viewable on the Osprey website .

Clothes, Shoes, & Accessories

The type and number of clothes, pairs of shoes, and accessories you will want to bring depend on the duration of your travel , the expected forecast at your destination, your planned activities , and whether you plan to carry on or check a bag.

See a list of items to consider bringing in each category below, with some suggestions for my preferred high-performing travel brands.

Clothing Items

General accessories, cold weather accessories, activity-specific gear, laundry supplies.

I am not a big cruiser, but I know plenty of travelers who are. When I need to remember what to bring on a ship trip, especially in the Caribbean, I rely on this list from another blogger.

  • Underwear: Nothing else comes close to these high performers for men and women by ExOfficio . Though, for the ladies, if you want to shop around, check out this great list of highly-rated alternatives .
  • Socks: Although pricier, these durable and dependable Smartwool socks will help keep your feet healthier and happier than cheaper alternatives.
  • Bras: I love these convertible strap sports-style bras by Handful and own several.
  • Sleepwear or loungewear
  • T-shirts and casual shirts
  • Dressier items: suit, blazers, shirts, blouses, etc.
  • Pants and jeans
  • Shorts and skorts
  • Sweatshirts
  • Outerwear: fleece or other jacket
  • Rain jacket
  • Hiking clothes
  • Swimsuit & cover-up

Athleta and KÜHL  are my two favorite high-quality travel and fitness apparel brands I can interchangeably wear with everyday non-performance clothing items. Check out this review of several men’s and women’s KÜHL items.  Or shop for items here .

In addition, I like to shop at the sister-owned athletic boutique, Lively Athletics , which is local and carries several independent activewear and footwear designers in-store and on its website .

To maximize your packing space , consider using compression packing cubes. I love this National Park set from Tripped , or this transparent cube set for easy viewing. Or opt for this less expensive non-compression alternative .

Shoes to Bring

When traveling, I scrutinize my shoe choice to minimize the space they take in my luggage. Each pair I take must serve a clear and comfortable function.

Here are the types of shoes to consider bringing.

  • Sneakers: My current favorite are the stylishly colorful and highly engineered ones from On Running .
  • Hiking shoes or boots: We love the waterproof and breathable low-top hiking shoes with their heavy-duty sole and reinforced rubber toe from Oboz . My husband and I both own a pair.
  • Dressier shoes
  • Sandals, flip flops, or house shoes: For flip flops, I have relied on these lightweight Havaianas for years. And since I never go barefoot, I often bring house shoes on trips. My all-time favorites, and perfect for plantar fasciitis sufferers like me, are these wonder slides from Vionic .
  • Shoe covers for packing: if you do not have reusable ones , plastic shower caps like these protect your clothes from dirty soles.

Accessories & Other Items

The accessories you will want to have with you depend on your style preferences and planned activities . Consider packing any of the below.

  • Jewelry: if you do not have one, you may appreciate picking up a jewelry roll like this one for easy packing and to limit necklace tangles.
  • Going-out handbag
  • Cold-weather scarves or gators
  • Long underwear
  • Hand warmers: I always have a bulk supply on-hand to help me stay warm during Chicago winters and in cold weather destinations.
  • Wool socks: Socks from Smartwool are ideal and worth the investment to ensure dry warmth.
  • Snorkel gear
  • Water shoes: we recently bought these colorful and affordable ones before a trip. They were the same quality and less than half the price of similar shoes available on-site.
  • Skis and skiing equipment (e.g., boots, goggles, poles, jackets/pants, etc.)
  • Snowboard and boarding equipment (e.g., boots, goggles, jackets/pants, etc.)

Whether you plan to hand wash in sinks as you go, hit a laundromat , or send your laundry out, you may need to corral your dirty clothes with some of the items below.

  • Laundry bag: Check out these laundry bags with a message I included in a gift guide .
  • Stain remover
  • Delicates bag
  • Laundry detergent: These space-saving flat Tide sink packets for sink washes are ideal for travel.
  • Clothesline (& pins if you prefer having them)
  • Drain stopper

Personal Care, Fitness, & Medicines

Your health, fitness, and personal care requirements relate to your specific needs and travel preferences.

Additionally, whether you prefer to pack light and buy items on-site or bring along your favorite products will determine what you need from the list below.

  • Personal care items
  • Fitness items
  • Medical kit items

Personal Care Items

  • Dental floss
  • Shampoo & conditioner: I love using these TSA-compliant refillable and easy-to-clean GoToob toiletry bottles from Humangear for shampoo, conditioner, and other liquids.
  • Hair styling products
  • Hair accessories: ties, clips, bands, etc.
  • Brush & comb
  • Hair styling tools: hair dryer, curling iron, etc.
  • Shaving supplies: razor, cream, etc.
  • Body moisturizer: For fellow dry-skin sufferers, especially those traveling to a cold-weather location, I always bring a bottle of this Eucerin heavy-duty cream .
  • Face cleansers
  • Acne treatment: I rarely break out at home. I often do on trips. I always bring this Neutrogena acne gel with me.
  • Other facial creams
  • Sunscreen: We take sun protection for our fair-skinned family seriously and never travel without an exhaustive supply of these Blue Lizard sunscreens .
  • Contact lens items: solution, cases, backup lenses, etc.
  • Glasses cleaner and shammy
  • Rewetting eye drops: We love these powerful ones from Rohto .
  • Orthodontic items: retainers, rubber bands, wax, etc.
  • Nail care tools: clippers, files, polish, etc.
  • Feminine care products
  • Personal care wipes
  • Travel sewing kit
  • Extra resealable bags: If you are ready to move beyond Ziplocs, try these zip-top ones from Ogato .

To keep your personal care items and toiletries organized, consider buying this durable Sea to Summit hanging bag   shown above.

Fitness Items

  • Foldable yoga mat: My husband has this one from Primasole, and I use this one from Gaiam.
  • Resistance bands
  • Biking or running gear

Medical Kit Items

This recommended medical kit contains suggested items that my family of four brought on trips in the past—when our kids were younger—or we continue to bring along now. Your needs as an independent solo, business, or mature traveler, will vary based on your health requirements.

This list should not replace professional medical advice or guidance from your physician.

  • Cold suppressant: Our preferred brand—by far—is Nature’s Way UMCKA .
  • Digital thermometer
  • Adult acetaminophen: Tylenol or generic
  • Adult ibuprofen: Advil or generic
  • Adult diphenhydramine: Benadryl or generic
  • Children’s acetaminophen: Tylenol or generic, chewable
  • Children’s ibuprofen: Tylenol or generic, chewable
  • Bacitracin: Neosporin or generic
  • Hydrocortisone ointment
  • Anti-nausea medication: prescription strength Zofran
  • Anti-diarrheal: Imodium or generic
  • Pepto-Bismol
  • Allergy nasal spray: Claritin or generic
  • Allergy medicine: Claritin or generic antihistamine
  • Prescription medications(s)

Over the years, whether for ourselves or our kids, we have had to use every item shared above.  And from experience, we have found it is a huge help to have the medications we need on hand when illness unexpectedly hits. This way, we can provide our ill family member with immediate comfort. And we do not have to head out at an inconvenient time in a less-than-ideal location to seek what we need.

Things to Always Carry on a Plane

Find a comprehensive list of all the items to consider bringing with you in your personal item(s) when you board a plane below.

  • Cell phone and/or tablet
  • Books or an e-reader: This non-glare and waterproof Kindle Paperwhite is ideal.
  • Other tech or games: Nintendo Switch , etc.
  • If applicable: school iPads or laptops and homework
  • Headphones: noise-canceling or other. I bring both Apple AirPods and these Bose noise-canceling headphones .
  • Electronic chargers: plugs, multi-port chargers , cables , portable chargers or power banks, etc.
  • Plug adaptors for international travel: This universal compact adaptor with four USB ports is a good option.
  • Eye mask: I never travel without this comfortable full-coverage eye mask .
  • Tissue packs
  • Hand sanitizer
  • If applicable: face masks
  • Travel wallet: IDs, insurance, credit and ATM cards, cash, etc.
  • Glasses and case
  • Sunglasses and case
  • If applicable: bifocals or cheaters
  • Travel crossbody bag or handbag: I love this durable and secure adjustable strap unisex North Face bag . And use it at home and on trips.
  • Empty refillable water bottle(s): This collapsible Nefeeko water bottle with a carabiner is ideal for multi-purpose travel needs.
  • Camera equipment: lenses, GoPro , selfie stick/tripod , lens cleaners, battery chargers, etc.
  • Snacks, mints, and gum
  • Writing: pens, pencils, journal, and/or notepad
  • Travel pillow: Though it is a splurge, this trtl pillow takes up little space and provides the best support.
  • Personal care items needed during flight: lip balms, moisturizers, menstrual products, medications, etc.
  • Change of clothes
  • Itinerary: digital or paper
  • Emergency banking and other contacts list
  • Copies of important travel document

To keep your tech from getting tangled , consider using an organizer bag . My favorite, and an improvement over using Ziplocs, is this one  from Tripped .

Other Miscellaneous Travel Items You May Need

The items in this below list do not necessarily fall into one category . And whether you need them depends on your trip type. These items include:

  • Swiss Army knife or equivalent tool: We use this on picnics for its blade and corkscrew. Or for its scissors. Place this item in a checked bag only.
  • Backup copies of all essential documents and banking cards. Including passports, credit cards, insurance cards, ATM cards, and IDs. Consider bringing a printed copy with you. And save another copy to an online folder or send them to a trusted friend or family member so that they are accessible in case of emergency.
  • Portable speaker for music: This higher-end speaker from Bose or this more affordable one from Sony will help you enjoy music together if you are traveling +1 or more.
  • Games and cards: I share our favorites in this gift list .
  • Insect repellant
  • Reusable tote bag: We use a compressible tote bag like this one from ChicoBag for shopping, wet umbrellas, and a place to stash coats or extra layers.
  • Gift(s): Whether your travel includes special occasions, staying with a friend, or even meeting a new one, remember to bring the gift(s).

Interactive Packing List Generator

We've been helping travelers remember what items to pack on the internet since 1994.  Let us use our experience to help you pack everything you need to make your holiday the special experience it should be.  Free to use, print it or save it - it's up to you. We hope you like our new, fresh interface.

Instructions For Creating Your Custom Travel Packing Checklist:

We've redone our site to make the process of creating your own list as quick and painless as possible.  Just follow these easy steps:

  • Place a check in the box next to the items you wish to add to your list.  We've preselected the most common ones, but feel free to uncheck those not needed on your vacation.
  • Add up to 15 more items to the list to cover items we don't have listed.  While we've been doing this for over 20 years, we don't know everything! (coming soon)
  • Press the "I'm Ready" button to generate your list.  We'll take you to the next screen where you can print,or save the results.

If you have any comments please let us know.

Misc Carry On

Helpful packing checklist articles, travel packing list.

The UPL was created back in 1996, however it first appeared on the internet in 1994.  The goal of the site has always been the same: provide unique packing suggestions tailored to the trip you are taking, not a generic one size fits all approach.

All you need to do is to fill in the boxes above about your trip and then you will be presented with a custom travel checklist.  Use this to make sure you have everything you require for your trip and try not to leave it until the last minute.

You can also find out the expected local weather at your destination to assist you when working out what you need to take. You can also use our time zones tool to work out the time difference between where you are and your destination.

UPL also allows you to book car hire for when you arrive at you destination.  This was added at the request from our users due to the large increase in prices when you land at a destination as oppose to booking in advance.

During our research we also found that buying currency in the airport or whilst abroad resulted in large extra fees for our users.  Please see our currency converter which will allow you to work out the rate you should be getting.  Use it also to pre-order currency to make sure you secure the best rate and maximise the spending money you are taking away with you.

We also added a dialling codes tool which will inform you of the exact number you or your loved ones back home will need to use to contact your destination.  You can also use it to work out what number you need to use to call home when abroad.

Finally, we keep our eyes out for great product recommendations for traveling. I found this review of potty training videos to be pretty darn funny. If you are traveling with a child that age, check it out.

We are constantly adding new tools to UPL and appreciate any suggestions.  If you would like to see anything added or are interested in advertising or sponsorship opportunities please contact us.   In the meantime please check out our blog or follow us on social media to keep updated on our new features.

What to Pack for Your Universal Orlando Resort Vacation

What to Pack for Universal Orlando Resort

Packing for a vacation can be stressful. You can find yourself overpacking or forgetting something crucial you may not have thought about (I know, I’m guilty of both.) Add in multiple days of theme park thrills and the temperamental Florida weather and your head may start spinning. You may even have an added layer of making sure the kids have everything they need, too!

You’re not just packing for the theme parks when you’re coming to Universal Orlando Resort . You’ll want to plan for all the different activities and outings at Universal’s resort hotels , Universal CityWalk , and the other vacation plans you have in Orlando. We’ve broken it down and put together our packing list of things to bring for your next trip here.

What to Pack for Your Universal Orlando Vacation

The essentials.

What to Pack for Universal Orlando

  • First things first, go ahead and throw your cell phone charger in your bag (your carry-on bag if you’re flying). There’s nothing worse than realizing you forgot it and your phone’s battery is almost dead. Oh, and of course, you’ll want to make sure you have your wallet, keys, etc.
  • Layout outfits for different occasions . Comfortable clothes and shoes for the parks, swimsuits for the water activities, and dressier options for a night out.
  • One thing I always do before I leave home is to make sure I have all my printed copies of my travel and/or ticket confirmations . You never know when technology may fail and you’ll need a good ol’ fashion printed doc. to save you time and stress.
  • Sunscreen, aloe gel, hats, and sunglasses. You’re going to be outside a lot, and Florida isn’t called the sunshine state for no reason. Pack plenty of sun protection. Oh, and lots of deodorant!
  • Small stroller – Great for the airports and navigating the park crowds. However, if you don’t feel like hauling a stroller with you, there are stroller rentals available at the parks and hotels.
  • Disposable dishware – Not having to clean dishes while on vacay! Also, those disposable placemats are perfect for easy cleanup.
  • Sun protection – It can get warm, so it’s key to protect your child with plenty of sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and light clothing.
  • Light jacket / blanket – We blast the A/C here in Florida to make up for the warm weather. A light jacket or blanket will help with the sudden change in temperature.
  • Need more recommendations on what to pack for the kiddos? Click here to see suggestions on what to pack for kids of all ages .

Travel Recommendations

Jurassic Park Splash Down

  • Check the weather and consider bringing an umbrella or poncho for those afternoon rain showers.
  • An extra suitcase for all those souvenirs (I recommend carry-on size to save some $$.)
  • Bring some entertainment like cards, mobile games, or a good book. Also helps to pass the time when waiting in line for rides.

Toothsome Chocolate Emporium

  • Throw in some fun outfits to wear like a Hogwarts house robe or matching family Dr. Seuss Thing shirts. Check out our online merch store for fun finds you can order before your vacation.
  • Grab a portable charger for your phone (your battery is going to drain from the tons of vacation photos you’re taking!).
  • Speaking of photos, if you have one and the skills to use it, pack a nice camera to capture all those insta-worthy pics . Don’t forget an extra memory card!

TIP: We have what’s called “Florida Winter” here, which means it actually gets cold for a few months, primarily December – March. Pack a light jacket and layers for chilly weather. There can also be this weird temperature flux where it’s warm midday and then cold in the morning and evening.

What to Bring for the Theme Parks

Universal Fanny Pack

All you should have to worry about in the theme parks is having fun, so ease and comfort are key. You’re going to do a lot of walking outside, a lot of standing, and a lot of experiencing different rides and shows. Here’s what you need to bring:

  • Small bag or fanny pack – Hauling around large backpacks can be tiring, and certain rides require you to put them in lockers. If you can swing it, bring a small bag that can fit in one of the free small lockers. Or better yet, a fanny pack with a 3-prong clasp can be brought on certain rides to avoid locker time.
  • Sun protection – Remember that sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses you packed for your Orlando vacation? You’re going to want to bring that with you to the parks.
  • Refillable water bottle – Staying hydrated is key, especially on a hot summer day. Bring a refillable water bottle to fill up on the go and stay cool. You can fill up at any water fountain or ask a Team Member at a food and beverage location.
  • Waterproof gear – There are water rides in Universal Islands of Adventure that you won’t want to miss. Consider bringing waterproof bags or plastic zip bags to carry your gear in if you don’t want things to get wet. Also, don’t forget a poncho for both the rides and potential rain showers. You may want to consider packing a change of clothes for comfort.
  • Snacks – You can bring in your own snacks to stay energized in the parks, or if you need any food for special dietary needs or medical purposes. I usually pack away some candy for a sugar boost in the afternoon.
  • Stroller or wheelchair – If you need a stroller or wheelchair while at the theme parks or hotels, you can bring your own or take advantage of our rentals. We’ve got options for you to choose from! Just ask a Team Member when you arrive and they’ll direct you where to go.
  • Hotel room key – If you’re staying at one of Universal’s hotels, don’t forget to bring your room key. You’ll need it for Early Park Admission , Universal Express ( available at select hotels ), and to take advantage of charging privileges. While you’re tucking that into your wallet, double check to make sure you have your photo ID and any additional cash or credit cards you may need!
  • Essential medications – You can bring in any prescriptions or medications you or your family may need during your vacation. You can even stop by Health Services at each theme park if you need help with storing them.

What to Bring for Universal Volcano Bay

Enjoy an island escape to Universal's Volcano Bay Water Theme Park.

When it comes to a theme park that’s all about water and relaxing in the sunshine, there are a few consistent FAQs that pop up on what to bring.

  • Towel? Yes. I recommend bringing your own towel (not from your hotel room) for ease, however, there are towels you can rent.
  • Water shoes? Yes. I’m a huge fan of water shoes, so I recommend putting them on your packing list. You can wear them throughout the theme park and on the majority of the slides.
  • Cooler? Sure. You can bring in a small soft-sided cooler for snacks and bottled water.
  • Tubes? – No need to bring your own tube. We’ve got you covered.
  • Bags? – You’re going to need a cute beach bag to throw in the towels, water shoes, and extra pair of clothes. I also recommend throwing in a plastic bag for your wet clothes later. If you don’t feel like hauling your stuff or leaving it out in the sun all day, you can rent a locker to store your gear in.
  • Hotel room key? – Yes, you’ll still need to bring this with you in order to take advantage of the perks we listed above (Early Park Admission, etc.).

TIP: Leave your wallet dry at the hotel by setting up a virtual wallet through the Universal Orlando Resort App . Then, all you’ll need is your TapuTapu wearable when you arrive at the park to pay for your food, drinks, or merch with just a simple tap. I would still recommend bringing your photo ID, especially if you’re looking to purchase one of the adult umbrella drinks.

What to Pack for the Hotels

exodus travel universal packing list

If you’re staying at a Universal hotel (which you totally should!), you definitely need to make sure the following are on your packing list.

  • Swimwear – Our hotels have some great pools , and you’re going to want to take a day to kick up your feet and relax in the sun. Throw in a couple of extra swimsuits and flip flops to not only hit up Volcano Bay but to lounge by the hotel pool, too. Don’t worry about bringing a towel though. The hotels have them available for you to use.
  • Clothes for a night out – The hotels also have some of Orlando’s best restaurants, bars, and nighttime events. Pack some dressier options for a night out during your vacay. The rooftop bar at Universal’s Aventura Hotel is calling your name.

TIP: If you’re coming for a birthday or another fun festivity, bring decorations for the room and the door to let everyone know you’re celebrating!

Bonus: Passholder Tips on What to Bring

UOAP Mel's Drive-In

Our Passholders are experts when it comes to visiting the theme parks. Who better to get some recommendations on what to bring? Here are a few I found to be great tips.

  • Lanyard – If you feel like traveling light, wear a lanyard instead of bringing a bag to hold your tickets, money, and ID. Saves you from having to use any lockers!
  • Frozen water bottles – Ice-cold water to stay hydrated and they’re great for cooling off.
  • Coca-Cola Freestyle refillable cup – If you have one of these bad boys from a previous trip, remember to bring yours again to save on soda refills.
  • Cooling towel – These magical towels are great for a hot day. All you do is wet them with water and they’re ready to cool you off.
  • Queue entertainment – Bring something to keep you entertained in the lines. Download some mobile games to play as a group or a good audio book if you’re flying solo.

TIP: Become a Passholder and get even more insider tips and tricks and exclusive benefits by joining the Passholder community on Facebook .

Your tickets are bought, you’re packing your suitcase, and now it’s time to take a fun break planning what you’re going to do at Universal Orlando Resort. Sooo many people under-estimate the intensity of the sun when visiting Florida – forgetting that being so close to the Equator those harmful UV rays are particularly strong!

We will be joining Universal for the first time for a wedding. We are excited, but hate to think we need to wear a mask outside? Is this true? Are masks mandatory in the Universal area? I’m assuming since it’s outside we don’t have to wear one. If you can clarify?

Hi, We are visiting on July 11th as a family of four from the UK. I have a CamelPak backpack for skiing but I thought the water bladder might be useful to keep the family hydrated. Would the backpack be a problem regarding getting on and off rides and if so, how accessible are the lockers? Thanks!

Hi Chris! Bags and loose articles are not permitted on certain attractions. We recommend taking a look at our website here to view locker dimensions: https://bit.ly/3KG0lom .

  • What to pack for your Universal Orlando vacation: free checklist & how to keep kids safe

You’ve planned the travel dates and made all the reservations for your Universal Orlando Resort vacation, and the kids are so excited, they can’t wait. Now, it’s time to think about packing, and Orlando Informer is happy to help you get started with our certified “Happy Family” list. Below, you’ll find everything from the vacation standards to expert advice designed to make traveling with the kids safer and easier.

First tip: there’s no reason planning and packing should be a one-person affair. Get the whole family involved in determining exactly what your clan needs to make everyone comfortable while out of town. This is just one way to extend the fun of travel!

Skip to: Flying to Orlando  | Driving to/around Orlando  | Last-minute planning  | Hotel room  | At the parks  | Dressing comfortably  | Seasonal items  | At the parks with kids

What should I pack for flying into Orlando?

As with all air travel, if you will be flying to Orlando, be sure to brush up on the FAA rules for packing. Start here  for reminders of regulations, such as luggage size, as well as permitted and prohibited items. Also, make sure you know what fees your airline charges for checked bags and what penalties they may collect for “overweight” bags.

If you have the room, it’s always a good idea to pack a change of clothes and the minimal toiletry essentials for each member of your family (like a toothbrush and toothpaste) in a carry-on. Hopefully, you won’t need them, but you’ll want them should there be any mix-up with your luggage.

If you will be flying with young children, your carry-on should include a parents’ survival kit for airport and airplane time. While the details will depend on your children’s ages, interests, and abilities, some items to consider for this include:

  • Diapers and wipes
  • Bottles and snack items (again, check those FAA rules)
  • Pacifier or gum (both have been used to help with ear-popping at takeoff and landing)
  • Pencils ,  crayons ,  notebooks , and  coloring books
  • Book of word games
  • Deck of cards
  • Portable DVD player or other media player – even just your smart phone – with headphones (be sure to follow all flight crew instructions for use of electronics while on the plane)
  • Travel facial tissue pack
  • Any medications or health supplies your child may need
  • Extra suitcase or duffel bag for all your shopping and souvenirs. There’s nothing like spending too much on park merchandise to then realize you have to buy another piece of luggage , too

What should I pack for driving to and around Orlando?

Your needs in this department will vary considerably, depending on where you are driving from and, once in Orlando, where you are staying. If your hotel is at Universal, you may not end up doing much driving around the City Beautiful (unless you have several off-site activities planned, like a day at SeaWorld or Walt Disney World Resort). If you are renting a vacation home, you’ll want to make sure you can find not only the theme parks, but grocery stores and other necessities, as well.

For getting to and around Orlando, consider:

  • Entertainment the whole family can enjoy ( car games , scary tales in audible format , etc.)
  • Extra in-car storage, like this
  • Proof of insurance for rental cars
  • Maps (even though you probably have access to a GPS app on your phone, some individuals may still want to consider this)
  • A GPS system, such as a Garmin device  (same note as above)
  • Car or booster seats for your kids. The Florida child restraint laws may differ from those of your home state, so you’ll want to visit this page for the latest legal guidelines

Keep in mind that it is always less expensive to buy anything off-site than it is at the theme parks, whether we’re talking necessities, groceries, or, even, souvenirs, and Orlando is just like any other town in that we have our fair share of Walmarts, Targets, CVS stores, Walgreens, liquor stores – you name it. It’s a great idea to become familiar with the location of the closest retail establishments to where you’ll be staying – even though Universal’s hotels don’t provide complimentary transportation to them, ride-shares are always available, and there is a plethora of options within a five-minute drive.

What to pack – last-minute planning

We know there is an incredible amount of information on our website for Universal Orlando vacation-planners, and, because of this, we also know it’s impossible to effectively use all of our resources without dedicating at least a few hours to reading through our pages. Well, when do some family members have a few hours to spare? Often during travel to Orlando!

It’s a great idea to visit the OI Universal Center table of contents right before you leave and see what pages you might want to freshen up on. (The same goes for all of our blog posts , too!)

What should I pack for the hotel room?

These packing tips are geared toward families staying in hotel rooms, whether at a Universal or third-party property; your list will be more extensive – and customized to your needs  – if you have chosen alternative housing, such as camping or a vacation home. (We’re not listing clothes here, because you know how long your stay will be and how many pairs of socks you need.)

Given all this, the basics for a hotel stay should include:

  • Extra snacks . Many families like to pack simple breakfast foods to enjoy in their hotel rooms. To keep certain items chilled, either bring a cooler (and use free ice machines for cooling) or take advantage of the in-room refrigerators you can find at some hotels, such as at Universal Orlando’s.
  • Resealable plastic baggies in different sizes. These are good for holding snacks as well as packing a bathing suit that’s still damp on the day you leave.
  • Flat sink stopper to accommodate any kind of sink and soap for emergency clothes washing. If you are traveling with kids, there is a strong likelihood that you will need to wash something, sometime, during your trip. (Universal hotel guests should note that the resorts do provide pay-per-use laundry machines.)
  • Small rope or cord and some clothespins. With these, you can string a makeshift clothesline in your bathroom or on your balcony for drying bathing suits or washed items.
  • Family first-aid/health kit . Be sure to include everything from prescription to over-the-counter medications, such as pain relievers and allergy pills, and also consider packing anti-nausea /motion-sickness medication, depending on your family’s needs. Include a thermometer and medicine measuring cups or spoons for children’s liquid medicine. (If you’re going to spend a late night at CityWalk but still have to get up with the kids in the morning, you might want a bottle of this stuff , too!)
  • Extension cords that support multiple plug-ins. This accessory will ensure you don’t have to tear apart your hotel room to find the closest outlets to your bed – and it will prevent arguments when everyone goes to plug in their phones at the end of the night.
  • One-dollar bills in US currency. In addition to tipping at restaurants, remember that it is considered courteous to tip when you receive personal service from bus/shuttle drivers, bell staff, parking valets, and others, including – possibly – room attendants (and do so each day since they rotate rooms). If you’d like more advice on tipping, we have guides for Universal , specifically, and Orlando , generally.
  • Finally, our favorite hotel travel accessory: SleepPhones . Can’t image trying to stay anywhere overnight without them!

What should I pack for a day at the parks?

If you are traveling with children or seniors, you definitely want to take a daypack of some sort along as you visit the Universal Orlando parks – and even without kids or seniors, a pack of some sort will come in handy to hold camera equipment, sunscreen, and other personal items. (Remember, everything is more expensive to buy on-site!) We suggest using a backpack or fanny pack, but a diaper bag, tote bag, or large purse will also get the job done.

Whatever you choose to use, consider the following ideas:

Daypack items for Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure

  • Your OI touring plan . The more prepared you are, the better your day will go! (If you don’t feel like printing it out, you can always just peruse our touring plans on your phone.)
  • IDs. While it’s a good rule of thumb for everyone old enough to have a valid, government-issued ID, it is a requirement for each person who is 21 or older and wishes to purchase alcohol. Keep in mind, for alcohol, it must be a government-issued photo ID – those papers you get when you lose your license don’t count. Also keep in mind you may need your Florida state-issued ID for certain Florida-resident discounts.
  • Camera, an extra camera battery, and an extra memory card . If you happen to forget any of these items, the My Universal Photos stores at the front of each theme park can help, but get ready for some sticker shock.
  • Extra cell phone batteries or external phone chargers . Universal does not provide any charging stations inside the parks but will rent you a FuelRod  for a fee. Since you’ll likely be touring for many hours at a time, taking photos, posting to Facebook , etc., there is a very good chance one charge simply won’t cut it.
  • Rain ponchos . You really will get soaked on the water rides at Islands of Adventure , and, in Orlando, it rains every day in the summer.
  • Sunscreen  (because it’s Florida).
  • Postcard stamps and addresses for where to send postcards. You’ll get those mementos mailed off sooner if you’ve already brought postcard stamps from home. (Want to send real postcards but don’t want the hassle of mailing them? There’s an app for that .)
  • Bandages and antibiotic cream . And be prepared for blisters.
  • Hand sanitizer . Lots of guests have clinched the hand bars on Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit before you, after all.
  • Travel packs of facial tissues.
  • Medications, over-the-counter pain relievers, as well as prescriptions.
  • Motion-sickness medications. This one will depend on your family’s needs.
  • Necessary personal toiletry items.
  • Small hair brush and/or comb. You’ll have lots of photo opportunities, and it only takes one trip around Popeye & Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges to ruin your hair for the rest of the day!
  • Souvenir money. Credit/debit cards are easier to carry around and accepted practically everywhere, so we recommend getting pre-paid debit cards for convenience and to create spending caps. If your vacation is primarily at Universal Orlando, you can also consider Universal’s gift cards. Keep in mind it’s always a good idea to have some cash, too, just in case.
  • Waterproof pouch for the most sensitive items, like cash or a passport.
  • Plastic grocery bags wadded up (or plastic zipper bags). These are useful for wrapping up items before the water rides if not using a locker.
  • Extra pair of socks. We personally recommend wearing shoes like Tevas or Chacos, but if you wear closed-toed shoes to the parks (out of preference or because it’s cold outside), an extra pair of socks can be the difference between staying at the parks for a full day and calling it early to go home because of blistered feet. Plus, changing your socks is an easy and surefire way to feel clean.

Daypack items for Volcano Bay

  • Sunscreen . Although we recommend packing some no matter which park you visit, sunscreen is a necessity for a day at Volcano Bay. The Florida sunshine can be relentless, and the quickest way to ruin a vacation is with a severe sunburn!
  • Sunglasses . This is another item that we recommend for all parks, but sunglasses are especially important at Volcano Bay. Just make sure to leave them in your bag or locker when you enter the water! Alternately, you can bring cheap sunglasses to use during your day at Volcano Bay.
  • Towels . Whether it be for drying off after a dip in the lazy river or laying out on a beach chair, you’ll want to bring at least a couple of your own towels along for the day. If you’d rather rent towels, that’s an option too – for a price, of course. Volcano Bay also permits guests to bring towels from their hotel to use.
  • A book . Although there’s certainly plenty to do at Volcano Bay, it can be nice to just lay by Waturi Bay and unwind with a good book, too. Plus, it can help pass the time while you wait for your TapuTapu to send you to your next ride!
  • A waterproof phone case . You can’t bring your cell phone on most of the rides at Volcano Bay, but if you’re looking to take pictures near the water – like in Waturi Bay, right in front of Krakatau – this is a necessity.
  • A small hairbrush or comb . If you have longer hair, it’s much more comfortable to brush it out than let it get tangled from the pool water. You can also bring along some hair ties to keep those locks out of your face while you water slide.
  • Motion-sickness medications . Again, this one will depend on your family’s needs, but better to be safe than sorry!

Some things to leave at home: Pool noodles, inner tubes, and other pool toys are  not  allowed, so be sure to leave those behind. Don’t worry, you’ll be plenty entertained without them! You also can’t bring your own umbrella or beach chair, but Volcano Bay has plenty of those to offer as well.

Food and beverages

  • Universal states that you cannot carry in full meals or any food that requires heating, so your daypack must remain limited to snacks.
  • For drinks, you are perfectly welcome to bring in bottled water, sports drinks, etc. For those on a budget, one of our favorite tips is to bring in a beverage container that can be filled at the water fountains for free, then add a splash of flavor with a Mio or a similar product.
  • Reminder: no glass containers and no alcohol may be carried in.

If you’re wondering how big of a daypack or backpack you can bring into Universal Orlando Resort and store in its lockers, visit our  complete guide to lockers .

What should I pack to dress comfortably at the parks?

You know what you and your kids will be most comfortable in, but, just in case, don’t forget:

  • Comfortable walking shoes. We can’t stress this enough.
  • Additional sun protection: hats, sunglasses, bandanas
  • Flip flops or other shoes you don’t mind getting wet (if you don’t want to store your shoes and socks in a locker for the Islands of Adventure water rides)
  • Cargo pants or shorts with pockets that secure with a zipper. The more things you can put in your pockets, the fewer things in your daypack. And no matter what clothing you wear, remember this advice: the deeper the pockets, the better

Tip: it is not unusual to walk five miles or more during a typical day at the parks, which makes your family’s shoe selection very important. There are no “requirements” imposed by Universal, but since achy feet will quickly turn into cranky attitudes, some careful thought should be put into footwear.

What should I pack to dress comfortably at Volcano Bay?

You’re headed to a tropical island, so be sure to dress for the occasion!

  • Flip-flops or sandals: You’ll need to remove shoes for any rides, so the more convenient, the better.
  • Swimwear: This is required for all rides at Volcano Bay, whether you prefer a bikini or swim trunks! When not riding, you’re welcome to wear clothing over your swimwear to cover up. Water shirts and rash guards are allowed on most rides, except for trap door slides.
  • Additional sun protection: hats, bandanas, etc.

If you feel like you forgot something while packing, or didn’t dress appropriately, don’t panic – the two shopping locations in Volcano Bay (Krakatoa Katy’s and Waturi Marketplace) offer many of the items listed above, including swimwear. (But, of course, you’ll be saving quite a bit of money by coming prepared!)

What to pack – seasonal items

Depending on the season of your visit to Orlando, you may find the following to be helpful:

  • Sun hats, bandanas, sunglasses, sunscreen (yes, this really does bear repeating!)
  • Misting fan
  • Lightweight jacket (something easy to carry around – a hood is nice for the kids)

It’s always good advice to dress in layers. This is particularly true during the winter months in Orlando, when bright sunshine can make the midday warm enough for t-shirts and shorts but when the nights get chilly enough for long sleeves and pants.

What should I pack for a day in the parks with kids?

And, finally, our last list is geared specifically to parents with young children:

  • Diaper bag with all the necessities. (If you run out of an essential, certain items can be found at First Aid.)
  • Small snacks. Sometimes a hungry child’s meltdown comes when it’s really hard to purchase a snack, like when you’re halfway through the line of a popular attraction. A small snack pulled out of your cargo pants pocket just might save the day!
  • Disposable cups with lids. Your budget may not require this, but it makes it easy to split a drink between small children.
  • Child identification. Include the phone number for the cell phone you will have in the parks. Some parents write this essential information on a piece of masking tape that’s placed inside the back collar of the child’s shirt, but other ideas include travel ID bands or, for more of a fun vacation feel, personalized ID tattoos .

Theme-park veterans know these final tips, but for first-time visitors with young kids, here are a few more ideas to note: at the beginning of each day, take a photo of your children. Should someone get lost, this photo will allow you to show park employees exactly what your child looks like and what s/he is wearing that day.

It is also important to inform your children that, should they get lost, they can approach any team member (if at Universal) or cast member (if at Disney) for help. All park employees are required to wear official name tags when they are in public – and that’s the key to determining who is and who is not someone your child can ask for assistance. When you first arrive, show your children what the park’s official name tag looks like, and let them know to look for that if help is needed (likewise, kids shouldn’t accept help from anyone not wearing a name tag).

Last but not least, as an added measure of safety, consider coordinating your children’s shirts and selecting bright colors – a neon yellow or pink shirt can be easily spotted from a distance. Or take this idea one step further with a custom design!

Time to hop to it!

Certainly, your packing needs will be unique to your family, but with this list and our ideas, we hope you’ll have almost everything covered for a great Universal Orlando family vacation. The Ultimate Packing List for Universal Studios, Orlando

If you’re planning a fun-filled trip to Universal Orlando Resort, then you’ve come to the right place!

I absolutely LOVE Universal Studios, Orlando. It’s my all-time favorite theme park, and I visit every chance I can get! I’ve been to multiple parks throughout the United States, so it’s safe to say I have mastered the art of packing my bag for theme parks.

At the end of the day, I’m a simple gal, and I don’t like lugging around items I know I won’t use or need.

This packing guide covers all the basics plus a few extra things you may wish to add to your bag. Universal Studios is an awesome place, and packing the right items is a great way to ensure you have the best time ever.

My ultimate packing list for Universal Studios, Orlando, covers just about everything you would ever need to bring for an incredible day at the park!

What to bring to Universal Studios? is the most common question asked by many first-time parkgoers. Today, I’m taking the guesswork out of packing. From appropriate shoes and clothes to theme park tips and essentials, see below for my complete Universal packing list.

exodus travel universal packing list

Packing List for Universal Studios, Orlando

My go-to park essentials these are items i always pack in my bag and never leave without., 1. small backpack/fanny pack.

One thing you will definitely need is a small backpack or fanny pack that you can comfortably carry all your park essentials in.

The last few times, I have taken a fanny bag, however, I have taken a small backpack in the past, particularly if I plan to go on the water rides that way, I can pack spare items for later.

Another great idea is to have dry bags within your backpack and waterproof cases for phones.

Water rides like Jurassic Park and Popeye’s Bilge Barge allow for small backpacks, so you will want to protect any valuables you have inside your bag from getting wet.

2. Reusable Water Bottle

The most important item to bring to the park, in my opinion. Dehydration is a common occurrence at theme parks, walking around and not keeping yourself hydrated is a recipe for disaster.

Packing a refillable water bottle will not only save you money but also keep you hydrated throughout the day. Always stay cool and drink plenty of water.

Water fountains can be found near restrooms and select park queues. Also, many snack stands and full-service restaurants will offer free icy cold cups of water.

Lastly, if the taste of the Florida water isn’t vibing with you, then you might consider purchasing a filtered water bottle.

3. Personal Items

Say you forgot everything on this Universal Studios packing checklist, just remember you really only need your credit cards, cell phone, hotel room key, medications, express pass and park ticket.

4. Comfortable Shoes

You will be doing a lot of walking at the park, so it’s super important that you wear comfortable walking shoes.

I have to say, over the years, my Converse and New Balance trainers have been my go-to comfy shoes for long days at the park.

They feel like warm cozy socks on my feet, and they go with literally any outfit. I’m able to wear these for an entire day, and my feet still feel great. Plus, they come in a wide range of fun colors.

Another pro tip is to wear/pack waterproof shoes. I highly recommend the Tevas. They are comfy, durable, and super quick to dry after getting wet.

5. Lip Balm & Hand Sanitizer

As for lip blams, my tried and true is the Blistex Medicated with spf15 , always! It’s the only product that I’ve found that truly hydrates and repairs my lips.

I also love Mango Balm dotcom by Glossier (a little goes a long way). I also value a good hand sanitizer not only is it convenient to use, it is undeniably better than nothing in cases where soap and water aren’t readily available.

Do your part to stop the spread of gems by packing a sanitizer! I love the B&BW mini hand sanitizers and these disinfectant wet wipes for keeping bacteria at bay.

6. Hat & Sunscreen

There’s a reason they call it the Sunshine State! Remember to pack proper headwear and sun lotion ideal for long days in the sun.

This affordable sunscreen is lightweight, moisturizing, and free of all the nasties.

Sun protection is super important every time of year, not just during the summer months. Be sure to re-apply every 80 minutes, particularly after getting wet or sweating.

20 Universal Studios, Orlando Tips and Tricks

The extras these are items you don’t necessarily need but are worth packing, just in case., 7. rain poncho / light jacket .

Florida weather is somewhat unpredictable, it can be sunny one minute, then rainy and humid the next.

When in doubt, it’s always a good idea to pack a rain poncho or lightweight water-resistant jacket.

You can purchase rain ponchos at Universal Studios for $8.00 each. The bad news is, they’re super thin and ugly and typically last one day.

Good news! This poncho is both fashionable and functional. It is a lifesaver on water rides and will last you many park visits.

8. First Aid Kit

I don’t think you need to pack a full first aid kit, however, I do recommend throwing in your bag a few band aids and some motion sickness tablets, and yes, you will need these if you’re readily prone to motion sickness.

Particularly if you plan to ride Jimmy Fallon’s race through New York and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. (trust me!)

9. Bathing Suit

Chances are you will get soaked on Dudley Do-Rights Rip Saw Falls, but getting soaked doesn’t have to put a damper on your fun.

Wearing your bathing suit on the water rides is a great alternative. One-piece bathing suits are fantastic for this as you can pair them with shorts and make them look like a complete outfit.

10. Portable Power Bank

Don’t forget to pack portable chargers for any devices you plan on bringing with you. Personally, I don’t tend to pack one as I’m not on my phone all that much.

However, if you’re the type of person that takes a lot of photos with your phone, then these power banks will save your phone from going flat.

You can charge multiple devices at once, and they are wildly compatible with Apple and Android products.

11. Change of Clothes

When visiting any theme park, comfort is key! What to wear to Universal Studios largely depends on the time of year you plan on visiting. During the summer, it’s generally hot during the day with possible rain showers.

Choose light, loose-fitting clothing, it’s important to dress in lightweight, breathable clothing in order to stay cool, it also allows your clothes to dry quicker throughout the day.

Avoid heavy, dark-coloured clothes, which can absorb heat and make you feel even hotter.

Should you pack a spare change of clothes? I personally don’t think there is any need, if you wear your bathers with loose clothing, you should be pretty good.

12. Small Snacks

Lastly, the final item on my packing list for Universal Studios, Orlando, is snacks.

The food at Universal isn’t cheap, it’s always a great idea to pack extra snacks in your bag to keep your energy levels up.

Granola bars , crackers and fruit and nut mix are all great options for quick bites on the go.

Prohibited Items at Universal Studios, Orlando

Universal has a lot of rules, and it’s easy to see why.

– Alcohol.

– Marijuana, or any item containing Cannabis or related paraphernalia.

– Clothing or accessories that represent someone as an emergency personnel or that may create a false impression of employment by Universal.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Dollywood in Tennessee

Common fq&a.

As a first-time park visitor planning a Universal Studios Florida trip can pose a lot of questions. What is Universal Studios Resort? Where is the park located and so on?

See below for Universal’s most frequently asked questions and answers.

What is Universal Orlando Resort?

(Not to be confused with Universal Studios Hollywood) Universal Studios Resort is a theme park owned and operated by NBC Universal (Comcast) in Orlando, Florida. The park itself contains 3 major theme park areas.

Universal Studios Florida

A park where guests can experience movie and TV show-based roller coasters and attractions.

Islands of Adventure

Includes 7 movie-themed islands, including Mraval, Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, Dr Seuss, and more.

Universal’s Volcano Bay

An island-themed water park featuring modern water rides and attractions.

Universal Citywalk

An entertainment district that includes shopping, dining and world-class hotels.

Where is Universal Studios Located?

Universal Orlando Resort is located at 6000 Universal Boulevard in Orlando, Florida, roughly 8 miles northeast of Walt Disney World.

For directions to Universal Orlando Parks, click here.

How much is the parking?

Parking at Universal can be found on-site at the theme park, also each neighbouring Universal Resort contains on-site parking also.

The large undercover parking garage features moving sidewalks, escalators, and elevators for easy theme park access.

The regular parking fee is $32.00. Upgraded parking is anywhere between $40-$60

What are Universal’s Ticket Options

Universal Studios, Orlando, has 3 ticketing options , these include:

One park ticket – Visit one park only – Universal Orlando Resort, Islands of Adventure or Volcano Bay

Park to park – Visit between two parks – Universal Orlando Resort & Islands of Adventure

Single-day admissions – Start at $119 per day

Multi-day admissions – Start at $232 each

Annual pass – Year-round entry with exclusive perks and discounts.

What is a Two Park Pass?

A two-park pass allows guests to explore between any of the two parks listed above. E.g. Universal Orlando Resort and Islands of Adventure.

I highly recommend purchasing a two-park pass, especially if you plan to visit both Harry Potter’s Diagon Alley & Hogsmeade.

You won’t want to miss jumping on the magical Hogwarts Express!

What is early park admission?

Early park admission is available to all Universal hotel guests & certain other guests for early entry to either one of the two parks every day.

This is a huge benefit to avoiding large crowds during high peak times.

See here for more information on early park admission

What is a Universal Express Pass?

A Universal Express Pass offers guests the opportunity to “skip the line” at many thrill rides within the park. This separate line is designed to help guests avoid long lines and lengthy wait times.

There are 2 Express Passes to choose from:

Single-use Pass – valid for one attraction only

Unlimited Express Pass – As the name suggests, this pass provides unlimited use on attractions throughout the park.
