Fall in Vermont – The Most Scenic Road Trip Itinerary

' src=

Vermont is one of the most scenic states in the country, and fall is the perfect time to visit. The leaves start changing color in early October, and the peak season is usually around Columbus Day weekend.

If you’re planning a trip to Vermont this fall, you’re in for a treat. There are so many beautiful places to see and things to do. To help you plan your trip, I’ve put together the perfect road trip itinerary. This itinerary includes the best places to visit, where to stay, and what to do in each location.

Fall in Vermont - The Most Scenic Road Trip Itinerary

The best time to visit Vermont

Mother Nature transforms Vermont beyond recognition in the fall.  This has to be one of the best autumn landscapes I’ve ever seen. Without a doubt, the best time to visit Vermont is during the fall season! The colors of fall in Vermont are breathtaking.

As the weather cools, Green Mountain State puts on a spectacular display of color. Vermont’s fall foliage is considered one of the most phenomenal in the world. Capture the best autumn views by driving along country roads driving down Route 100. Don’t miss the Vermont Country Store along the way.

The state’s abundance and diversity of maples, oaks, and birches ensure a rich palette of yellow, brown, and bronze tones. These are just a few words to describe fall in Vermont. The visual effects are unforgettable.

The route: where to go and what to see

The picturesque route through downtown Vermont is nearly 400 miles long. You can see the fall in Vermont in one day by taking this route and stopping at some of the places I recommend. However, it is preferable to take a weekend road trip and see everything at your leisure.

Route 12 south from Montpelier to Woodstock is my suggested route. After that, take Route 100 north, then Route 100B back to Montpelier. While this road trip may be full of surprises, one thing is certain: you will see the beautiful fall foliage in Vermont along the way. Let’s get started!

Forests cover 78% of the land, and their density is comparable to that of the Cantal. Vermont is, as you can see, very rural! So, what are you going to do there? I recently read that there are at least two good months to visit Vermont: September and October. It is a dream location for leaf peeping, or observing the sumptuous fall foliage. Let’s travel 1,800 kilometers in a week to find this gem.

Fall in Vermont - The Most Scenic Road Trip Itinerary

The rolling hills and mountains are the perfect backdrop for a road trip

My scenic journey begins in Montpelier, on the northern edge of central Vermont. The smallest state capital in the United States, Montpelier is 293 miles from Boston and 158 miles from Hartford. To get to the starting point, you can drive on Interstate 89.

Leaving Montpelier behind, I take Highway 12 and head south to Northfield Falls.

Northfield Falls

Vermont has a lot of covered bridges. However, at Northfield Falls, the two can be seen simultaneously, with visitors wandering across the first to see the second. This image is unique to New England, so you should photograph it!

Continue on Route 12 in the direction of Bethel.

Betel is an integral part of the landscape. This town is also home to the White River National Fish Hatchery, which focuses on the restoration of Atlantic salmon in the Connecticut River. After leaving Bethel, continue on the road south to Woodstock.

Woodstock is a classic Vermont town where you should spend some time walking around and trying the local restaurants. I recommend seeing the Quechee Gorge and the Billings Farm and Museum.

Quechee Gorge is like a small version of the Grand Canyon, only in Vermont. While not as awesome as Arizona’s, there are reportedly plenty of hiking trails. So don’t miss this opportunity to take in the scenery and stretch your legs a bit on this trip. And while you’re at it, take a stroll through the picnic area overlooking the waterfalls.

Fall in Vermont - The Most Scenic Road Trip Itinerary

Founded in 1871, Billings is now a working farm. Its museum paints a picture of farm life in the late 1800s. Depending on when you visit the museum, you can participate in some seasonal activities in addition to admiring the fall leaves in Vermont. So check the calendar of events when planning your road trip and you may find something interesting. Don’t forget that they have interesting daily activities as well.

After seeing everything in this area, continue on Route 4 for about 32 miles to Killington.

Killington is a well-known ski area with six trails. Climb Killington Pea k (1,010 meters) to see the spectacular views and the Vermont fall foliage that has spread throughout the area. If you don’t want to climb, you can take the K-1 gondola to the top.

In Killington, you’ve arrived at the halfway point for viewing Vermont’s fall foliage. If you want to spend the night in this area, I recommend staying in Rutland. However, because this area is popular with tourists looking to see the fall colors, make sure to book your accommodations in advance.

Beyond the Green Mountain Forest

After waking up and having a hearty breakfast, hop back in the car and follow Route 100 along the border of the Green Mountain National Forest. It will take you through Pittsfield, Hancock, and Granville. And, honestly, it’s the best part of this trip to see fall in Vermont.

From near Hancock and close to Route 100, you can take Route 125 to Texas Falls. The easy hike to the falls is beautiful year round, but even more so this season. It’s an incredible place to photograph the fall leaves in Vermont.

After Hancock, when you get north of Granvill, you can stop to see Moss Glen Falls. You’ll be driving 11 miles through the wilderness, so go for a walk and enjoy the scenery.

At the End of the Fall Road in Vermont

On the final leg of this road trip, leave Route 100 and follow Route 100B past the village of Moretown. You’ll head north to Middlesex, and as soon as you get on Highway 89, you’ll be on your way to Montpelier. Don’t be sad. The last leg of this scenic drive offers more photo opportunities to capture the fall leaves in Vermont!

This scenic drive to view the Vermont fall leaves offers many opportunities for detours. My advice is to not rush and to walk on the back roads that shun the busy highways. You’ll have a greater appreciation for fall in Vermont, and you’ll also discover why the residents wouldn’t move anywhere else in the world!

What to pack for your trip

Nothing beats a road trip by car for getting where you want, when you want, and especially at your own pace. Traveling by car allows you to stop whenever you want for a quick picnic by the sea, or to continue driving to arrive earlier than planned. However, a long journey necessitates spending time—a lot of time—on the road.

A long road trip can be exhausting, and if you realize you forgot your charger at home, it will be too late to turn around. So, if you really want to enjoy your trip and vacation, make sure you’ve thought of everything. So here’s our packing list for everything you’ll need.

There are numerous travel lists available on the internet. These lists of items, which are frequently thematic, specialize in a specific type of travel, such as southern sun, camping, hiking, or family travel. None of them were completely satisfactory to me.

So I made my own list, dividing it into four logical subcategories:

It sounds silly, but it’s something that’s all too often overlooked: make sure your car is ready for a big trip, with all the surprises and mishaps that can happen at any time. Make sure you take along a spare tire, a spare tire or a temporary air kit to help you out in case of a flat tire.

Believe me, there’s nothing like a flat tire to ruin a vacation: it’s best to have something to change a tire with you. Having the equipment is good, but knowing how to change a wheel is better! If you need a little practice, you know what you have to do before you leave?

Even though breakdowns and flat tires happen very rarely (and I hope they don’t happen to you), these moments of panic can still happen. Therefore, it is important to be well prepared with an emergency kit, which I recommend you bring :

  • A flashlight is always useful if you need to change a tire or simply ask for assistance, and a flashlight is always useful if you need to change a tire or simply ask for assistance.
  • Safety triangle: if you get stuck on the side of the road, remember to put the reflective triangle well behind your car to avoid collisions and over-accidents.
  • A first aid kit: bandages, antiseptics, and painkillers: it is better to have them with you, just in case.
  • A jump lead is very useful if you ever need to restart your battery.
  • A mini fire extinguisher: for those who need to be reassured.

Before leaving, remember to check that your tires are properly inflated, that your insurance is up to date, and remember to bring your license!

  • If you are going to be on the road for a long time, it is better to have a kit of toiletries at hand, in which you can put :
  • Hand sanitizer (especially useful when gas station restrooms lack soap or are not always very clean…)
  • Wipes
  • Chewing gum
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste

Cables, chargers, and everything technical

Maps and guidebooks are great, but it’s time to live with the times. I know you’re planning to take them with you, but make sure you haven’t forgotten:

If you use your cell phone as a GPS, be careful when you cross areas where the network and connection are very weak. A backup GPS can always help.

Off-line GPS: very useful if you are abroad without a network or local SIM card. Downloading an off-line GPS app will be very useful. You just have to download the maps of the cities, which will be displayed even without connection or network. You won’t be able to make a real-time route, but it can really help you to find your way if needed.

A USB charger, with the cigarette lighter adapter if needed, is a must if you don’t want to run out of battery.

A removable battery: a second battery can always be useful if you don’t have an outlet nearby.

Fall in Vermont: the perfect getaway

Here are some ideas for a getaway to Vermont. So take a trip to Stowe, a charming little bicentennial village founded in 1794 by the Luce family. The Recreation Path, an 8-kilometer path that allows you to enjoy the beauty of Vermont, is particularly noteworthy.

Don’t hesitate to visit the Shelburne farms, which are very educational, especially if you have children. You can visit the museum but also do different activities such as kayaking, playing tennis or visiting the gardens.

The View from Mount Mansfield

If you want to get some height, go climb Mount Mansfield. At 1,339 meters, it’s the highest point in the entire state of Vermont. It’s also the most visited mountain; more than 40,000 hikers come to hike the trails each year.

Fall in Vermont - The Most Scenic Road Trip Itinerary

Sweet tooth

For those with a sweet tooth or who may have a shortage of maple syrup, a trip to the Bragg family farm may be a good idea. The Braggs have been making maple syrup for eight generations, and you’ll find some great products there.

Lake Champlain

Of course, a must-see is Lake Champlain. It’s the perfect place for a sailing trip or simply to contemplate its beauty from the shore.

And once you’re done with your Vermont getaway, if you’re looking for one in Quebec, here’s one to do in Val David.

So, will you be going to Vermont this summer?

Vermont’s hidden gems

Vermont, a land of green hills, quiet hamlets, and peace-loving Americans, offers visitors more than just placid Holstein cows to gaze upon and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream to taste. It also hides treasures and precious gems.

There is a museum unlike any other in the United States in Shelburne, a small town about 10 miles south of Burlington: the essence of American folk art concentrated in a unique place thanks to the unique vision of a woman who died over 40 years ago.

Electra Havemeyer Webb was born into a prosperous family and married well. She was an avid collector who accumulated objects in her various homes (New York, Long Island, the Adirondacks, and Shelburne). She had developed an interest in folk art. an art form she considered pure and authentic, bringing out the beauty in everyday objects.

Following her husband’s retirement in 1947, she embarked on a major project to establish the “collection of collections.” She established what is now the Shelburne Museum on a large plot of land she acquired in Shelburne.

Fall in Vermont - The Most Scenic Road Trip Itinerary

There are so many things to do in Vermont during the fall season

There are no fewer than 37 buildings and permanent exhibits with some 150,000 objects. The list of what the museum has to offer is impressive: a reconstructed general store; a large paddlewheel boat from Lake Champlain, weighing nearly 900 tons, moved to the site; an exhibition of quilts; a period school; superb weathervanes; a gigantic collection of circus miniatures; a covered bridge; dozens of horse-drawn carriages; in short, lovers of popular art as well as neophytes in the field will be satisfied.

The museum should be visited over the course of a full day. If that isn’t enough, tickets are good for two days.

The museum is two hours from Montreal, and with our loonie on the rise, the United States is finally becoming more affordable.

The Inn at Shelburne Farms

There was a time when Lake Champlain attracted the wealthy vacationers of the northeastern United States. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, New York society gathered there to escape the heat wave on the windy shores of this great body of water. Shelburne did not escape in this fashion.

After receiving an inheritance ($10 million in 1881, a fortune at the time), one of the daughters of the wealthy Vanderbilt family conceived the idea of building a home in Shelburne. Her husband, a physician, also wanted to establish a model farm. Several hundred acres of land were acquired for this purpose.

The landscaping of the grounds was entrusted to the architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who was responsible for Central Park in New York and Mount Royal Park in Montreal.

All of the magnificent buildings and landscaping of the time still exist today. They have been meticulously renovated and preserved. The memory of Lila Vanderbilt Webb and Dr. William Seward lives on. They were the parents of Electra Havemeyer Webb’s husband, for whom the Shelburne Museum is named.

Transformed into a hotel

Their home has been transformed into a beautiful hotel ( The Inn at Shelburne Farms ), and the farm has become an educational center for children, where they still produce excellent raw milk cheddar.

The big house was abandoned for a long time: from 1936, when Lila Vanderbilt, who outlived her husband by 10 years, died, until the late 1980s. The couple’s children almost dismembered the farm completely. In extremis, they decided to create a non-profit organization with an educational mission.

The house would be transformed into a hotel, the profits of which would be used to finance the farm. Millions were spent on a major renovation project, and the Inn opened in the early 1990s.

The result is striking. It is a large stone and red-brick Queen Anne style building with 13 chimneys. It is located on a large point that juts out into Lake Champlain. An elegant period garden, also reconstructed, embellishes the front part of the property.

Extraordinary efforts have been made to preserve the authenticity of the interior and exterior of the house. Each of the 24 rooms is furnished in a particular style.

The furniture, which has been preserved, is of the period, and the decor is entirely reconstituted. For example, the room that is called “pink” because it has ceramics of this color, has the original bed and bookcase, which gives a singular atmosphere.

Lodging and food

An interesting possibility for lodging: the Heart of tche Village bed and breakfast , located, as its name indicates, in the heart of the village of Shelburne. It offers a period atmosphere with modern comforts, at prices a little lower than the Inn.

But a stay in Shelburne can also be very affordable. Near the museum and farm, on Route 7, there are several reasonably priced hotels, such as the Econo Lodge and Holiday Inn.

For fine dining, there are several options for visitors. Two restaurants in the Shelburne area stand out for their fresh ingredients and local production.

At Starry Night Café on Route 7, the goat cheese ravioli with fresh tomatoes was truly exquisite. The lamb was also worth a visit the night we were there. Further down the road in Burlington, Smokejack on Church Street is another good place to go, albeit in a much more urban setting, with good local ingredients.

Finally, in Vermont, there are a lot of places to discover, and it is easy to understand why this part of the United States welcomes no less than 13 million tourists every year!

If you’re looking for a breathtaking fall road trip, look no further than Vermont. From the capital city of Montpelier to the small town of Stowe, this route takes you through some of the most scenic countrysides in the Northeast. Soak in the colorful leaves, enjoy a pumpkin spice latte, and take in the fresh air – this is fall at its finest. Be sure to comment and share this itinerary with your friends.

This Is the Safest U.S. State for Solo Female Travelers in 2023, According to Research

It's time to book a trip to Vermont.

vermont solo travel

Women aren't waiting for an invitation from a travel partner to get out and explore the world. According to statistics from Kayak , searches for single-person flights increased by 36 percent for travel in 2023 compared to 2022, while additional data from Industry Global News revealed that 85 percent of solo travelers registered with travel company Overseas Adventure Travel are women. While more and more women are getting out in groups, with families, or on their own, safety remains top of mind. To help women find places where they can explore without fear, TrustedHousesitters conducted the 2023 Solo Female Traveler Report, unveiling the 10 best states that are ideal for those looking to explore on their own.

Corey Hendrickson/Getty Images

The report determined its rankings by looking into several factors, including a state’s internet speed (via data from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission), the state’s existing popularity among female solo travelers, and female safety, which it retrieved via data from the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program. And after factoring in all the data, Vermont came out on top. “The northeastern state offers women a perfect R&R getaway,” the website shared in its findings. “With the lowest rate of violence against women and the highest rate of women who report feeling safe in the nation, it comes as no surprise that the destination is already popular with solo female travelers.” The website added, “On TrustedHousesitters, women traveling alone make up more than half of all overnight stays in Vermont.” Pennsylvania came in second thanks to its beauty, friendly locals, access to the internet, and high safety rating for women. Delaware came in at third, scoring high marks for its ranking as the “second safest state in the nation with the fourth-best internet speeds,” Trusted Housesitters noted. Rhode Island and Maryland rounded out the top five for the best states to travel. The website also ranked states purely from a safety perspective, with Virginia, South Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland, and Idaho rounding the top five. Those looking to travel internationally alone should look into Japan, Switzerland, and Slovenia, which ranked as the safest countries on Earth for solo travelers in a 2023 study . And, before you do jet off all alone, make sure to learn the 10 mistakes to avoid while traveling alone so you can focus on having a great time instead of worrying about a thing.

Vermont Fall Road Trip

New England on the east coast of the USA is one of the most gorgeous places to experience the ultimate beauty of Fall and the state of Vermont takes the crown . During the Autumn season here, you will have one of the best leaf-peeping experiences – whilst enjoying the natural Fall exhibition just during your drive, strolling in scenic state parks, hiking mountain ranges, or even exploring stunning waterfalls in this area. I came back with strong feelings for the state of Vermont and its people- it is by far my most favorite state in America. I will also go again, so let us say this was a beginning for me too.

Some of the top places to visit in Vermont in Fall include:

  • Green Mountain National Forest
  • White Mountain National Forest
  • Scenic Route 100

The Fall foliage starts in mid-September and lasts until mid-October. I visited at the beginning of October when the leaves are more reddish however if you’re looking for yellow colors, visiting earlier is advised. Personally, I would recommend aiming for “Peak Foliage” in mid-October and the USA long weekend of October 12th for Columbus day is perfect for this Fall Road Trip.

Vermont is more like a European Travel experience when it comes to the stay. There are many inns and B&Bs run by locals which I would recommend as your first choice to experience the local life. I stayed in a lovely Airbnb which was very similar to a Scottish B&B and I would rate my stay here as one of the best Airbnb stays ever.

If you are visiting internationally flying into New York or Vermont, you could go for a rental car option. Remember that you drive on the right side of the road in the USA. Your international driving license is valid if you feel comfortable driving. The rules are pretty easy with wide roads and clear junctions combined with the fact that most of the cars in the USA are automatic.

We embarked on a Vermont Fall road trip as part of a Week East Coast Road trip traveling from Florida to Boston. This Vermont road trip itinerary starts from Albany and made our up North with stops at villages and parks in the Green Mountain National Forest until arriving at Montpelier , the capital city of Vermont. In the following days, we also covered the Vermont scenic 100 route and two mountain ranges, Mount Mansfield and Killington. Below is the route we followed color-coded per day for this amazing fall foliage road trip in Vermont. Let us enjoy the fall visual show of Vermont together.

Vermont Weston Village

Day 1: Green Mountain National Forest

Our first stop in Vermont was the Jamaica State Park which is located in a small picturesque village Jamaica in the south of Vermont. The state park needs a pass to enter and it is best to check the activities before you go. We only strolled around the village.

Jamaica State Park in Vermont

The short walk from the village to the park is stunning with amazing views of colorful houses embedded into nature along the West River and an amazing bridge called the Wardsboro bridge forming a great frame.

West River in Jamaica State Park, Vermont

There is a hike from here to the Ball Mountain Dam via Hamilton Falls which we missed as our itinerary was tight, I would advise planning to spend a long time here. From here we headed upwards to the village of Weston. On the way, you will get this stunning view which is the same as my feature image. Here is the exact stop: 60-52 River Road, Jamaica, VT 05343.

Weston felt was like walking through a European town with the houses, roads, and shops here reminding me of Austria/Switzerland. Adding to the Autumn charm, the village houses were fully decorated with pumpkins all ready for Halloween. I really loved the orange theme in this postcard-perfect Green Mountain Town village in autumn.

Autumn in Weston Village, Vermont, USA

There are some really cute little shops here selling local crafts and produces. I had heard that this town is perfect to celebrate Christmas in, and the Christmas shop here really had strong European vibes so you can note this village if you’re planning a European-style getaway in the USA.

Another attraction is here the Old Mill Museum , which has a mountainous backdrop and a stunning waterfall. We did not go inside the museum as it was closed the day we visited however the view from the outside museum was breathtaking enough for us. Someone from the village had even left a pumpkin beneath the trees, how cute!

Old Mill Museum Weston Vermont

The route to Woodstock via Plymouth was one of the best scenic routes during the trip. We didn’t stop in the town itself but we just stopped along the way to admire the views.

Plymouth Journey, Vermont

The view of mountains and reflections in the lake is simply splendid. This route is just stunning throughout so much so it was confusing which pictures to take and which pose would be best. In the end, I can see we ended up taking fewer pictures and spent more time just enjoying the view.

Reflections in Plymouth, Vermont

We arrived in Woodstock village around sunset, of course, this is what happens if you take a scenic route and keep stopping. Woodstock village is very famous in New England and is on the top list of scenic towns with amazing houses and post-card views around. Though we missed exploring the village properly, we could experience the local shop here which was so thrilling with lots of diverse farm productions. I almost wanted to buy everything and the bakery here was calling to us loudly.

Weston Village Farm Shop

These pumpkins and Squashes are just a small part of what they produce. Aren’t they so diverse? I have never seen these shapes and colors before, I spent a lot of my time just staring at pumpkins and I wished I could have brought them home with me.

After strolling here, we headed towards Montpellier where our Airbnb was booked for the night.  I definitely need to go back to Woodstock as I could not explore it properly. We arrived late in Montpellier, found a local Thai restaurant to eat at, and headed to the Airbnb to crash.

Day 2: Scenic Route 100

Waking up in Plainfield, Montpellier in our Farm Stay Airbnb is still one of my most favorite stay experiences. This house is located in a private estate with a lake and the morning view was breathtaking. Our host was such a lovely lady who had everything sorted for us like a typical B&B in Europe. They also had an Apple tree with such low-hanging apples that I tried to act eating one while standing on the ground.

Apple Trees in Montepellier, Vermont

The Airbnb farm house has a vintage style and is decorated very well. The prayer flags caught my attention and I added them to my list of home decorations straight away. I wish we had more time here, I will definitely go back and stay exactly here again if it is still available.

The Airbnb was in a hilly area far away from the city. We headed towards Montpellier city first.

We stopped at Montepellier and went via Cliff Street towards Hubbard Tower to get a top view of the city. There were a lot of hikers around here and would recommend not missing this view if you visit. This town qualifies to be the most scenic Fall Town view in my mind, just like I have Tromso for the best winter view. The capital city of Vermont and the vibes here caught my attention, there is something so positive about the people and region here.

Hubbard Tower, Vermont, USA

The State House of Vermont is located in its capital town, Montpelier. Stopping by this cute statehouse was a heartwarming experience as it stood gorgeous and constantly reminded me of the Glory of this State and its People. It was just stunning with its golden dome and fall backdrop.

Vermont State House

We drove towards Stowe taking the scenic route 100 . This drive was just epic and was sad I could only do a part of it and hope to revisit and finish the full route.

Stop 8: Ben & Jerry’s Factory, Waterbury, Stowe

We arrived at the original Ben and Jerry’s factory which is the Mekkah for Ice-cream lovers. The vibe here is too cheerful, both adults and kids queued up to get their hands on their favorite flavor.

Ben & Jerry's Factory, Waterbury Village

Here you can taste all their new flavors and pay a visit to the ice-cream graveyard where there is a gravestone for every flavor that didn’t succeed in the market.

Stop 9: Mount Mansfield

One of the highlights of my trip was the drive and hike up to Mount Mansfield, the highest mountain point in Vermont. This literally felt like being in a Hollywood movie even looking at cars coming down from that steep hill while we queued to drive up.

Mount Mansfield

Climb up and you are in the middle of a FALL HEAVEN literally. It is all Yellow, the Coldplay song was singing in my head throughout the drive here. This mountain is a not-to-miss and the best for leaf-peeping and complete with a cute little chapel.

The drive can be tricky here and we saw a couple who had got stuck with their car tire wedged in a ditch. There are multiple trails you can do here and it is best to plan time if you wish to hike.

We just did a short section of the Sunset Ridge Trail as we did not have much time left of the day. The view from here is amazing.

A list and map of trails can be found here.

Sunset Ridge Trail Mount Mansfield, Vermont, USA

Day 3: Killington

At this point, one of our friends had to leave so we had a short break in the trip before the rest of us continued to visit Killington the next day which is another mountain range famous for skiing. Look at the view- amazing isn’t it?

Mountain Lodge, Killington, Vermont, USA

The Killington Mountain Lodge is very popular among families and was packed during our long weekend visit. It is perfect for a Fall Foliage road trip in Vermont, particularly for a weekend getaway and they have amazing rooms to stay in here.

Final thoughts on the Fall Road Trip in Vermont

Fall Road trips in Vermont are the best for leaf peepers, nature lovers and foodies. What attracted me the most during my Vermont visit, apart from the leaf-peeping experience, and picturesque villages are the really nice people and their commitment to using local products that even McDonald’s does not exist there. Vermont is known for its natural landscape, and its capital town Montpelier is amongst the least populated cities of the USA. It definitely is an Autumn Wonderland!

My Traveling Kids

2 Day Itinerary for a Solo Getaway to Stowe, Vermont

vermont solo travel

The start of the school year has gone off with a bang…theater rehearsals, soccer practice, homework, tests, and even a fractured foot for one of my kiddos.  October was looking to be even more crazy, so I was thrilled to  head to Vermont for a little relaxation. My tires practically burned as a sped off with my music blasting for my three-hour drive to one of my favorite states.  I love autumn in New England and was thrilled to see that the leaves were just starting their dazzling display of colors.

Let me show you how to spend 2 perfect days in Stowe, Vermont…

Day 1: (Mine was a Sunday)

Your first stop is to Cold Hollow Cider Mill . There is an explosion on your senses as you walk through the door.  There are so many locally-made products that you won’t know where to look first.  I loved that they have a beehive there enclosed in glass (pic) and you can actually buy honey that is produced by these bees.  I can’t wait to taste some.

vermont solo travel

Since it is a cider mill, you have to taste their warm cider donuts.  What?  It’s not like you have a choice…lol! Head on over to their Apple Core Luncheonette and Brew.  Try the “Vermont To the Core” (bacon, apple slices, cheddar and apple jelly) and a glass of their hard cider, Barn Dance. (You may want to pick up some cans or a growler to bring home!)

vermont solo travel

If you’re lucky enough to be there on a Sunday, drive to the Stowe Farmer’s Market that takes place from 10:30-3:00.  Everything is made local…soap, dips, cheese, wooden trays, pottery, wine, honey, jewelry…endless! There is even live music.

vermont solo travel

If it is not a Sunday, spend a few hours riding your bike on the rec path, where you’ll be surrounded by nature and some breathtaking views.

Now it’s time to go across the street to check into the gorgeous Stoweflake Mountain Resort and Spa . Fireplaces, meditation labyrinth, waterfall in the spa… You’ve got to see this place!

( Read all about my stay here !)

At the hotel, go for a swim in the outdoor pool, do laps in the indoor pool, or take a soak in the outdoor Jacuzzi.

After a day of driving, have dinner at Charlie B’s, in the resort.

It now time to settle back to your room with a glass of wine and a good book for the night.  (Request a room with a fireplace!)

Time for some pampering. Your first stop for the day is the spa at Stoweflake. Treat yourself to one of 120 treatments they offer.  After your massage, spend a few hours in their sanctuary enjoying their hydrotherapy massaging waterfall, sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi.

Now that you’re completely relaxed, it’s time to go out and do some exploring.  If you want the best views in Stowe, take a gondola to the top of Mt. Mansfield , the highest mountain in Vermont.

Discovering Woodstock, Vermont: A Solo Female Traveler’s Journey

Woodstock, Vermont, is a charming New England village that offers an unforgettable experience for solo travelers. Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or an extended stay, this guide will walk you through the best places to eat, activities to do, and the most comfortable accommodations, all from the perspective of a solo female traveler.

Where to Eat in Woodstock, Vermont: The best restaurants

When I first arrived in Woodstock, my senses were immediately awakened by the aromas wafting from the local eateries. As someone who loves to explore a destination through its food, I made it my mission to sample the best this quaint town has to offer.

Breakfast Bliss at Mon Vert Cafe My mornings in Woodstock began at Mon Vert Cafe, a local favorite for breakfast and lunch. The line can get long, so it’s best to arrive early. The cafe has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, reminiscent of a charming small-town eatery with a dash of upstate New York flair. I indulged in their breakfast burrito, a hearty dish packed with fresh, local ingredients, and their challah French toast, which was perfectly sweet and fluffy. The baked goods here are made fresh daily, making it the perfect spot to fuel up for a day of exploration.

Comfort Food with a Twist at Worthy Kitchen For lunch or dinner, Worthy Kitchen became my go-to spot. This modern pub offers classic comfort food with a fresh, contemporary twist. Their menu is a delightful mix of familiar dishes and unexpected flavors. I couldn’t resist their Vermont cheddar mac and cheese, a gooey, comforting dish that felt like a warm hug on a plate. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, their poke and rice bowls are just as satisfying. The black bean veggie burger is a must-try for vegetarians. Pair your meal with one of their craft IPAs for the full experience.

Dining with a View at Simon Pearce Restaurant One of my most memorable meals in Woodstock was at Simon Pearce Restaurant. Perched above the Ottauquechee River, this restaurant offers stunning views that complement its creative seasonal menu. I dined on their terrace, savoring dishes like zucchini and squash fritters with tomato chutney, Vermont cheddar cheese soup, and salmon served over a polenta cake with a mustard maple marinade. Each bite was a testament to the region’s rich culinary traditions, all while enjoying the serene river views and the warm ambiance of the restaurant.

Cozy Evenings at Richardson’s Tavern For a cozy, quintessential Vermont dining experience, Richardson’s Tavern is the place to be. The atmosphere here is like stepping into a lodge, with its warm fireplace and comfortable booth seating. The service may be a bit leisurely, but it’s worth the wait, especially for their Vermont Maple cake dessert. This tavern is the perfect spot to wind down after a day of exploring Woodstock.

Other Notable Mentions Although I didn’t have time to visit, The Prince and The Pauper and Cloudland Farms are high on my list for my next visit. The former is known for its elegant take on Vermont classics, while the latter offers a unique farm-to-table dining experience where the menu is chef’s choice for the day.

Things to do: Activities to Enjoy in Woodstock, Vermont

Woodstock isn’t just about great food—it’s also a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and those looking to soak up some local culture. As a solo traveler, I found plenty of activities to keep me busy, from hiking scenic trails to exploring local art galleries.

Exploring the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park No trip to Woodstock would be complete without a visit to the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. This park offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical significance. I spent a tranquil afternoon hiking through its well-maintained trails, surrounded by vibrant fall foliage. The park’s landscape is a living testament to the conservation efforts of its namesake families, and the guided tours provide fascinating insights into their legacy.

Strolling Through the Woodstock Village Woodstock’s village is straight out of a postcard, with its historic buildings, charming boutiques, and friendly locals. I loved spending time just wandering the streets, popping into the various shops, and chatting with the shopkeepers. The Woodstock Farmers’ Market was a particular highlight, offering a bounty of local produce, artisanal goods, and homemade treats. It’s the perfect place to pick up some unique souvenirs or enjoy a fresh snack.

Visiting the Billings Farm & Museum For a deeper understanding of Vermont’s agricultural heritage, the Billings Farm & Museum is a must-visit. This working farm and museum offer a glimpse into the state’s rural past. I enjoyed touring the farm, meeting the animals, and learning about traditional farming techniques. The museum’s exhibits are well-curated and informative, making it a great place for solo travelers interested in history and culture.

Taking in the Art at Collective, the Art of Craft As an art lover, I was thrilled to discover Collective, the Art of Craft. This gallery showcases the work of local artists and artisans, offering everything from pottery and jewelry to textiles and paintings. The quality and creativity of the pieces on display are impressive, and I couldn’t resist purchasing a few items as mementos of my trip. The gallery staff were friendly and knowledgeable, making my visit even more enjoyable.

Relaxing at the Taftsville Covered Bridge For a moment of peace and reflection, I visited the Taftsville Covered Bridge. This historic bridge is one of the oldest in Vermont, and it’s a beautiful spot for photography or just taking in the scenery. The sound of the river flowing beneath the bridge was incredibly soothing, and I found it to be a perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.

Where to Stay in Woodstock, Vermont: The best hotels

Finding the right place to stay is crucial for any trip, and Woodstock offers a variety of accommodations that cater to different tastes and budgets. As a solo female traveler, safety, comfort, and convenience were my top priorities, and Woodstock did not disappoint.

woodstock things to do

Luxurious Stay at the Woodstock Inn & Resort The Woodstock Inn & Resort is the epitome of New England luxury. From the moment I arrived, I was treated like royalty. The elegant décor, warm fireplaces, and lush gardens made it feel like a home away from home. The Inn offers a range of activities, from spa treatments to guided hikes, ensuring there’s always something to do. I stayed in a room with a four-poster bed and a view of the courtyard—every detail was perfect. The Inn’s central location made it easy to explore the rest of Woodstock, and after a long day, it was the perfect retreat to relax and recharge.

Charming Stay at The Shire Woodstock For a more budget-friendly option without sacrificing comfort, The Shire Woodstock was a fantastic choice. The rooms are cozy, with rustic décor that adds to the Vermont charm. I loved waking up to views of the river and starting my day with a cup of coffee on the balcony. The Shire’s location is just a short walk from the village, making it convenient for solo travelers like me who prefer to explore on foot. The staff were incredibly welcoming and provided great recommendations for things to do in the area.

Although I didn’t stay here during this trip, it’s on my bucket list for a future visit. This all-inclusive resort is nestled in the Vermont countryside, offering a secluded and peaceful retreat. The accommodations are stunning, with each cottage and suite featuring its own distinctive style. Twin Farms is perfect for those who want to disconnect and immerse themselves in nature, with activities like hiking, fly fishing, and even wine tastings available on-site.

Cozy B&B Experience at The Jackson House Inn For a more intimate and personalized stay, The Jackson House Inn is a charming bed and breakfast that offers a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. A Three-Day Itinerary to the Best of Fall in Vermont

Hi, I'm Monica

Join the List

For a long-weekend getaway from New York City this fall, we rented a car and drove north to catch some of the best leaf-peeping on the east coast. In early and mid-October, Vermont is the autumn version of a winter wonderland: foliage so bright you can’t really capture it in photos, perfectly crisp weather, picturesque towns set into the rolling mountains.

The further north you drive, the more the scenery starts to look like Switzerland or Austria – so it’s little wonder that this is where the von Trapp family chose to settle after the nuns helped them escape Salzburg*.

We spent most of our drive along Route 100, but the landscape and fall colors are so fantastic that even the freeway has some postcard-worthy views. Here’s my plan for a perfect three-day getaway from the city.

*Okay, okay, that’s not exactly how it happened .

vermont solo travel

Warren and Stowe

Grab your suitcase and coffee and start driving north. Might I recommend this fall playlist ? Once you cross into Vermont, plan for plenty of stops along the way – picture-perfect views, apple donuts, and maple creemees (a local maple syrup softserve) are all worthy detours. The Weston Vermont Country Store and Amherst Lake were two of my favorite spontaneous stops.

Plan a lunch break in the tiny town of Warren. Get a sandwich from the general store, but don’t leave without browsing around and grabbing a jar of this spicy mustard (my favorite discovery of the trip). Find a table outside or a spot next to the waterfall to eat lunch, then stroll around town before getting back on the road.

Follow Route 100 all the way up to Stowe, Vermont. We settled in at Edson Hill , where we had dinner in the Dining Room restaurant . If you’re there, ask for a corner bench table or a spot next to the fireplace for ultimate coziness. And don’t miss the fire pit on the patio!

Smuggler’s Notch, Cider Slushies, and Queechee

I know it’s the weekend and a vacation, but I promise that (1) this is worth the wakeup call, and (2) you can sleep in tomorrow. Before breakfast, pull on a hat and a sweater and make the short drive up to Smuggler’s Notch .

Give yourself about an hour to enjoy the scenery before all the other travelers, hikers, and their many cars start to clutter the zig-zagging road. Afterwards, take your time warming up over a long breakfast back at the hotel.

Head back out and make your way up to the mountaintop Trapp Family Lodge . The classic Austrian-style lodge has wonderful views and gardens – we spotted more than one family photo session happening here. When you’re ready for lunch, drive down into Stowe and stop in at the general store.

Next, take the scenic route to Burtt’s Apple Orchard . The same road trip rules apply as yesterday: brake for maple creemees, wonderful views, any roadside maple syrup stands. The orchard has pumpkins and apples of course, but what you’re really here for are the exceptionally good apple donuts and the apple cider slushies. Buy more donuts than you think you need, and strongly consider never drinking hot cider again.

After you’ve walked through the orchard and solved the corn maze, it’s time for the last stop of the day: Queechee. Plan to arrive before sunset to see the falls and the covered bridge that spans the river before your dinner reservation at Simon Pearce . If you find yourself sans reservation, put your name on the list for a table in the Bar and explore the glasswork studio while you wait. Either way, the Vermont cheddar soup is a perfect way to end the day.

Note: To save yourself some driving, you could spend the night in Queechee or nearby Woodstock. However, during the peak fall season, many hotels have a two-night minimum stay.

vermont solo travel

Woodstock and Leaf-Peeping

Give yourself a slow morning today; sleep in and head down to breakfast, then come back to pack up your things and check out of your room.

Back on the road again, drive towards Woodstock, Vermont. This pretty town feels like the real-life version of Stars Hollow – all it’s missing is a gazebo! You can park just about anywhere, then wander through the town square and side streets to spot photo-worthy fall decorations and cute shops to explore. Make sure to see the covered bridge and the famously chic Woodstock Inn . Have a leisurely lunch at the Inn or stop at the general store and make a picnic out of it.

By now you’re an experienced leaf-peeper, and you know that the best part of this road trip is simply driving through the autumn wonderland and taking it all in, stopping whenever you like. On the drive back south to the city, I must insist that you stop for a maple creemee if you haven’t had one yet. When the sun has set and you’ve still got an hour or two to go, remember your extra donuts from Burtt’s and thank your past self for being so thoughtful.

7 of the Best Places to Travel Alone in New England

A solo adventure differs from a group vacation in a lot of ways. From what you should bring to how you should get around, there are countless tips you should know before traveling solo . But then, there’s the all-important question:  Where should I go?  If you’re thinking about where you can choose to spend a solo adventure, we’ve got you covered. Here are seven of the best places to travel alone in New England.

                                                       Explore Solo Travel Offers

Franconia, New Hampshire: one of the best places to travel alone!

7 of the Best Places to Travel Alone in New England

Outdoorsy types: franconia, new hampshire.

It’s no secret that New Hampshire is a top go-to for outdoor recreation, and the Cannon Mountain region has it all for outdoor enthusiasts. With miles and miles of trails free to hike, bike, and explore through Franconia Notch State Park and the White Mountain National Forest, your solo adventure can hit all of your favorite wilderness activities in one swing. Set aside some time to pitch a tent at one of nearly 100 wooded campsites, where you can find spots for fishing and boating between the 38-acre Echo Lake, Profile Lake, and the Pemigewasset River. In the wintertime, you have 95 ski trails to choose from, including the highest ski area summit in New Hampshire at 4,080’.

Woodstock, Vermont: one of the best locations to travel solo!

Spa-goers: Woodstock, Vermont

While the town of Woodstock features something to do for every season, this area is also a great fit for spa-goers and those looking to unwind — between destination spas at resorts and inns and several day spas, your relaxation needs will be more than fulfilled even before you take a scenic walk backdropped by picturesque mountain views. The charm of the Green Mountain State is represented by The Billings Farm and Museum , which features a working dairy farm and holds a Harvest Festival every October.

Extroverts: Old Orchard Beach, Maine

If you’re looking for something with a little more people-centered activity, Old Orchard Beach is the place. The combination of historic New England charm and modern development is exemplified by the Palace Playland, one of the last old-fashioned seaside amusement parks in the country, and the thrill-ride oriented Funtown Splashtown USA . The screams of the ride-goers are only matched by the booming of the fireworks display taking place every Thursday night during the summer, preceding weekends of active nightlife. Topped off with piers stretching out along beaches that are consistently-voted as the best in Maine, this is both a beautiful and excitement-filled destination for solo travelers looking to broaden their horizons.

The bluffs on Block Island, Rhode Island: a quiet place to travel solo!

Introverts: Block Island, Rhode Island

Looking for a more remote getaway for your solo trip? Block Island hits the sweet spot for introverted travelers. Located ten miles offshore, you can find a quiet spot for yourself along miles of coastal bluffs, pull out your favorite book or watch the sailboats roll by on the sound. Head inland for countless trails to explore by foot or by bike rental, and don’t forget your binoculars — there are over 150 unique bird species on the island, making this a popular location for watchers.

Maritime Maniacs: Mystic, Connecticut

Located along the Mystic River and Harbor, this is a historic town that proudly presents the best of coastal Connecticut. The Mystic Seaport is a true blast from the past, resembling a 19th-century seafaring village with horse carriages traversing around historical ships and buildings — which is a great complement to the Mystic Aquarium , one of Connecticut’s largest aquatic attractions. With incredible farmer’s markets to boot happening on a near-daily basis, you can grab some of the freshest local seafood on your way from one nautical New England locality to the next.

If you love history, Salem, MA is a perfect location to travel solo in New England.

History Buffs: Salem, Massachusetts

The 1692 Salem witch trials have left the town of Salem with more than enough to see and do in the present — the town is chock-full of spooky exhibits, tours, and museums. Catch a five-star show at the Gallows Hill theatre and visit a 4-D haunted house after your tour through Salem’s finest shops, restaurants, and historic structures. Witches beware, but travelers will rejoice in the countless opportunities to fulfill their solo journeys in a destination that’s just as much fun as it is educational. Traveling alone is about self-exploration and indulging into a new location — making it an increasingly popular type of experience. Explore the best places to travel alone in New England with our current special packages for solo travel  and find the right fit for you. Happy travels!

23 top things to do in vermont in 2024.

Outdoor adventures are just one of the high points of the Green Mountain State.

vermont solo travel

Top Things to Do in Vermont

Aerial of Trapp Family Lodge.

Courtesy of Trapp Family Lodge

Vermont is known for its peaceful escapes into nature and outdoor attractions, from renowned ski resorts to the Green Mountains to Lake Champlain. But it also touts charismatic small towns, unique lodging choices such as farm stays and all-inclusive resorts , and distinctive food and drink. This destination is worth a visit for its nationally recognized craft beer, the rich offerings of the Vermont Cheese Trail, the maple syrup – since Vermont produces more than 50% of the country's supply – and the "creemees," which are a slightly richer (and arguably tastier) take on soft serve ice cream.

There's no such thing as a bad time to visit Vermont, but fall is exceptionally beautiful, with some of the most stunning foliage in all of New England . Curious to see the Green Mountain State for yourself? These are the experiences that should be on your list of the best things to do in Vermont.

Lake Champlain

Getty Images

In 1998, Lake Champlain was briefly named one of the Great Lakes after then-President Bill Clinton signed into law a bill in which Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont quietly deemed it as such. Eighteen days – and a heavy dispute – later, the title was rescinded after a determination that, geographically, Lake Champlain doesn't quite measure up to lakes like Superior and Michigan. But residents and tourists today can still recognize it for the great – not to be confused with Great – lake that it is.

With or without the esteemed title, Lake Champlain is a large freshwater lake that spans 435 square miles of surface water and wows visitors with views of the Green Mountains on one side and the Adirondacks on the other. Dozens of public beaches and boat launches line its shores, so you'll find no shortage of opportunities for recreation on the water, including boating, fishing, swimming and keeping an eye out for the mythological lake monster named Champ. The lake's striking island towns – Grand Isle, South Hero, North Hero, Isle La Motte and Alburgh – offer state parks, farms, orchards, vineyards, and even inns and campgrounds.

Tour the flagship Ben & Jerry's

Have you even been to Vermont if you didn't take the factory tour at Ben & Jerry's ? At its flagship location in Waterbury (near Stowe), Ben & Jerry's offers 30-minute guided tours that include a short movie on the company's history, an overview of the production process, a look at the manufacturing area and an ice cream tasting. Of course, there's also an on-site ice cream shop and gift shop, and especially charming are the photo ops and the Flavor Graveyard, where you can pay your respects to the "dearly de-pinted." Previous visitors confirm it's as touristy as it seems, but fun nonetheless.

Looking down Church Street Marketplace in Burlington, Vermont.

One of the top things to do in Vermont is spend a day or two in Burlington . The centerpiece of town is Church Street Marketplace, which offers plenty of shopping and restaurants, many with outdoor dining. Find cozy lodging such as the rustic but modern Hotel Vermont , or consider a stay at one of the town's best bed-and-breakfasts . Of course, this popular waterfront city also boasts a variety of local breweries.

Other highlights in Burlington include ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain, a science and nature museum; the Ethan Allen Homestead Museum, a historical home commemorating one of Vermont's founders; and, for those who enjoy quirky attractions, the World's Tallest Filing Cabinet. Whatever you do, don't bypass the Burlington Greenway Bike/Walk Path, a pleasant paved trail that runs along Lake Champlain and connects beaches, parks and neighborhoods.

Island Line Trail

The nearly 14-mile Island Line Trail, which includes the Burlington Greenway, crosses the middle of Lake Champlain via a 3-mile causeway, allowing you to practically touch the water with your feet in some areas; there's nothing quite like it. This rail trail begins in Burlington and follows the route of a railbed – the Island Line – built in 1899 by the Rutland-Canadian Railroad to connect New England to the Great Lakes, until moving freight by other means became cheaper around the 1950s.

The railbed remained abandoned until it became a path for pedestrians and cyclists in the 1980s, and this rail trail has been one of the most unique things to do in Vermont ever since. To reach the end of the trail, you have to take a ferry, which bridges a 200-foot gap in the causeway, before continuing the short journey to South Hero. You can acquire a bike rental from Local Motion, a rental shop and advocacy organization in Burlington. Local Motion also operates the bike ferry and provides an interactive map of the trail. Both bike rentals and ferry rides are available seasonally from May to October, and reservations are recommended.

Experience the sugarhouses

Steam rises through the open roof of a maple sugar shack with a sign that reads "Come Visit Out Sugarhouse."

As the largest producer of maple syrup in the United States, Vermont has thousands of sugarhouses, many of which host Maple Open House Weekends in March with tours and tastings. The events align with sugaring season (and mud season), when oscillating temperatures cause sap to flow through maple trees for sugar makers to collect. If you don't want to visit Vermont during mud season but still want to learn about syrup production and history, check out Baird Farm in Chittenden, which offers free tours and tastings year-round (reservations required). Previous guests rave about the staff's hospitality here.

Try out a delicious creemee

An employee at Canteen Creemee Company holds out a creemee.

Courtesy of Canteen Creemee Company

Creemees are essentially soft serve ice cream, but there's no real consensus on where the name came from. Perhaps the moniker derives from the fact that Vermont used to make its soft serve higher in butterfat content and, hence, creamier. Either way, the creemee's most iconic flavor is maple, but you can't go wrong with any flavor at places such as Canteen Creemee Company in Waitsfield, The Village Scoop in Colchester and Al's French Frys in South Burlington, all of which come recommended by locals and visitors alike. If you're looking for plant-based options, head to Offbeat Creemee in Winooski.

Breweries and beer trails

Close-up of a person pouring beer into a glass at a brewery.

If you like craft beer, chances are Vermont is already on your list of places to visit. Featuring some of the top-rated breweries in the U.S., Vermont is home to The Alchemist in Stowe – whose Heady Topper IPA has a cult following – as well as Freak Folk Bier in Waterbury and Hill Farmstead Brewery in Greensboro.

If you really want to immerse yourself in the craft beer scene, follow one of the Vermont Brewers Association's beer trails . Take the Vermont Brewery Passport Challenge by picking up a passport at a participating brewery and collecting stamps or by checking in to your stops on the Vermont Brewery Challenge app. Cyclists may want to check out the bike-friendly Burlington Trail, where you can imbibe highly rated beers at Foam Brewers. Pet owners can take advantage of the Dog-Friendly Beer Trail to drink alongside furry friends, while the Tiny Trail will take beer enthusiasts exclusively to nano breweries.

Vermont Teddy Bear: Shelburne

What started as a Burlington street cart in 1981 has grown into a full-fledged store and experience in Shelburne, Vermont. At Vermont Teddy Bear, visitors can take a tour of the factory where the now-famous plush bears are made, including the Bear Hospital, where injured or sick teddy bears are lovingly repaired by the resident bear doctor.

For an additional fee on top of the tour cost, make your own teddy bear to take home or gift to someone you love. It's the perfect way to commemorate a trip to Vermont for travelers of all ages. You can also check out the on-site Bear Shop to browse the selection of bears and Vermont-made products.

Address: 6655 Shelburne Road, Shelburne, VT 05482

Simon Pearce Flagship: Quechee

Another item to immortalize a trip to Vermont (albeit more expensive than a teddy bear) is a handcrafted piece of glassware from the Simon Pearce store in Quechee, the namesake studio of a legendary Irish-American entrepreneur and artist who resides in Vermont. Located in a renovated historic woolen mill that's hydroelectrically powered by the Ottauquechee River – an attraction in itself – the artist's flagship store includes a workshop where you can watch craftspeople blowing glass pieces that are sold on-site. Get a bite to eat at the dining room at Simon Pearce, which overlooks a waterfall and covered bridge.

Address: 1760 Quechee Main St., Quechee, VT 05059

Hit the ski slopes in Stowe and beyond

A layer of clouds covers the slopes at Stowe Mountain Resort.

Vermont is a renowned destination for skiing, with more than two dozen public ski areas on offer. Among them is Stowe Mountain Resort , located in the picturesque town of Stowe, which is nicknamed the "Ski Capital of the East" and considered one of the best places to ski in the U.S. This resort touts 485 acres of skiable terrain that cover Spruce Peak and Mount Mansfield, the highest point in Vermont. Just as good as the skiing and snowboarding is the town of Stowe itself, where shops and restaurants line Main Street and hotels such as Topnotch Resort and The Lodge at Spruce Peak offer luxury accommodations and amenities.

Check out other notable ski resorts such as Killington, the largest ski area on the East Coast, and family-friendly Smugglers' Notch, where winter activities include all-day ski camps for kids as young as 3, family snowshoe scavenger hunts and a weekly winter carnival. On any summer voyage to Vermont, don't overlook other notable resorts such as Okemo, where you can ride what's essentially an enclosed flying couch – skiers will know it as a bubble chairlift – and hike to a historic fire tower for 360-degree mountain views.

Trapp Family Lodge: Stowe

Aerial of Trapp Family Lodge.

One of the hotels that make Stowe a popular place to stay is the Trapp Family Lodge , owned by the von Trapp family (yes, that von Trapp family). After the Trapp Family Singers toured the U.S. in the early 1940s, they decided to settle on a farm in Stowe, which reminded them of their home country, Austria . In the summer of 1950, the family opened a 27-room lodge. Later destroyed by a fire, the Trapp Family Lodge was rebuilt with a variety of accommodations, activities and on-site dining. It now includes von Trapp Brewing, where you can drink in the resort's history, mountain views, and a craft beer or two.

Address: 700 Trapp Hill Road, Stowe, VT 05672

Follow the Vermont Cheese Trail

Close-up of Vermont sharp white cheddar cheese with flatbread crackers on a table.

All roads lead to cheese on the Vermont Cheese Trail, consisting of more than 45 award-winning cheesemakers such as Cabot Creamery. Some farms provide tastings and/or tours, while others simply sell their best products. Check out an online map of the Vermont Cheese Trail to see each cheesemaker's location and offerings.

Wondering where to begin your cheesy commute through Vermont? If you like aged cheddar, stop at Grafton Village Cheese or Shelburne Farms. For goat cheese, try the chevre varieties at Blue Ledge Farm. You also can't go wrong with the offerings at Consider Bardwell Cheese. No matter where you go, the products made by Jasper Hill Farm – whose cheeses rank among the best in the world – are more than worth a taste. While its location in the Northeast Kingdom region isn't open to the public, Jasper Hill Farm's artisanal cheeses can be found at Vermont grocery stores (and at select stores throughout the U.S.).

Liberty Hill Farm: Rochester

Pond among green grass at Liberty Hill Farm.

For a look at where the cheese process begins, Liberty Hill Farm offers tours and overnight accommodations. Guests of this dairy farm's cozy bed-and-breakfast enjoy a farm-fresh morning meal and a hardy dinner each day of their stay – with ingredients including Cabot Creamery dairy products. The biggest draw of a visit to Liberty Hill Farm, however, is the opportunity to feed and milk the resident cows – or even baby calves. Even if you don't decide to stay at the inn, you can still book this activity through Airbnb Experiences .

When you aren't doing kid-approved farm chores or meeting the animals, you will find plenty to do in the surrounding area. Previous guests, especially families with young children, say their farm experience was enriching, adding that the home-cooked meals are exceptionally good.

Address: 511 Liberty Hill, Rochester, VT 05767

Explore the general stores

Storefront of F.H. Gillingham and Sons.

For all things Americana and Vermont, take some time to browse a cozy general store or two. The Vermont Country Store is the most famous, of course, with two locations in the state selling everything from candy and gifts to clothing and kitchenware.

Even more interesting is to explore the nearest local general store, like the F.H. Gillingham & Sons store in Woodstock. One of Vermont's oldest general stores still run by the same family, it's owned by descendants of Frank Henry Gillingham, who opened the general store in 1886, and Franklin Billings. Its original customer guarantee, "Your money's worth or your money back," is still honored today. Previous patrons love the vintage vibe of this store, with some calling F.H. Gillingham and Sons a mandatory stop in Woodstock.

Visit the former house and grave of Robert Frost

Exterior of the Robert Frost Stone House Museum.

If you've ever enjoyed Robert Frost's poetry, head to the southwest corner of the state to learn more about the time he spent there. The first poet laureate of Vermont lived in a house in Shaftsbury in the 1920s that has since become the Robert Frost Stone House Museum; visitors can see the room where in 1922 Frost wrote his renowned poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." Explore the poet's life through letters, writing drafts, notes and other documents at this house museum, which is open seasonally from May through October.

Less than 5 miles away, you can make a pit stop at a historic cemetery in Old Bennington, located next to the Old First Church, to visit his grave, which is etched with a line of his poetry: "I had a lover's quarrel with the world." This burial ground is near the visit-worthy Bennington Battle Monument, a storied structure that happens to be the tallest building in Vermont.

Address: 121 Vermont Route 7A, Shaftsbury, VT 05262

Grafton Inn: Grafton

Hang your hat where Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Ralph Waldo Emerson and other well-known figures once hung theirs. You'll see those names and the names of other famous guests in the cozy lobby of this inn, a member of the Historic Hotels of America. Grafton Inn offers individually (and beautifully) furnished rooms, suites and guesthouses on top of farm-to-table dining. The 1801 Tavern also houses the Pine Room Bar, and the Phelps Barn Pub offers live music on select evenings.

On-site activities include yoga, tennis, pickleball and swimming in the pond. Trail passes and equipment rentals are included in the resort fee, so guests also have easy access to hiking, mountain biking and disc golf in the summer months, as well as cross-country skiing, snow tubing, snowshoeing and sleigh rides in the winter. There may not be tons to do in the village of Grafton itself – it's a small town with a sugar house, a cheese shop and a gift shop – but that's the allure.

Address: 92 Main St., Grafton, VT 05146

Shelburne Museum: Shelburne

The Ticonderoga Steamboat at Shelburne Museum.

The Shelburne Museum has a little bit of everything, with attractions and activities located both indoors and out: The 39 buildings housing its collections are scattered across 45 acres. One popular exhibition can be found in the Circus Building, where you can ogle the fantastical, miniature Arnold Circus Parade, a handcarved display that nearly runs the length of the 518-foot building.

This unconventional museum also features historic Vermont structures, including a rare two-lane covered bridge from 1845, a Lake Champlain lighthouse from 1871 and the 1906 Ticonderoga – a restored 220-foot steamboat and National Historic Landmark that visitors can freely explore. Reviewers say the admission cost may be a bit steep but assure you'll understand why once you see just how special this museum is. Note that the Shelburne Museum is open seasonally from May to October.

The Tyler Place Family Resort: Highgate Springs

Did you know there are all-inclusive resorts in Vermont? The Tyler Place Family Resort in Highgate Springs is a classic resort offering a variety of cozy accommodations such as cottages with screened porches and kitchenettes – but not kitchens, since buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in nightly rates. Speaking of meals, The Tyler Place has a unique setup for dinner: Adults are encouraged to enjoy a quiet meal while children – who get to eat earlier – play with the newfound friends and counselors they meet via the resort's award-winning programs for kids.

Together, families enjoy a seemingly endless array of activities, from banana boating and water skiing on Lake Champlain to biking around the property and exploring the gardens. Note that The Tyler Place is open seasonally from May to September and, with the exception of Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, requires a Saturday-to-Saturday reservation. Families rave about their stay at the resort, noting that it provides the perfect balance of alone time and family time.

Address: 175 Tyler Place, Highgate Springs, VT 05460

Northeast Kingdom

Night shot of St. Johnsbury in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

Referred to by locals as the Northeast Kingdom for its natural splendor, this region in the northeast corner of Vermont borders Canada and is more remote than most places in the state (if you can believe it). In addition to its beauty, this area boasts charming dining and lodging options alongside opportunities for agritourism and ecotourism. Explore the many vacation destinations along the Northeast Kingdom Byway – a 51-mile stretch that makes for a scenic driving tour – including Lake Willoughby, Mount Pisgah and Burke Mountain resort.

Animal lovers may want to check out Saint Johnsbury, which has a lively downtown area and the one-of-a-kind Dog Mountain. The 150-acre property is a haven for people and dogs (leashes optional), featuring trails, ponds, the Stephen Huneck Gallery and the Dog Chapel – a tribute to beloved departed pets. Newport, a small city with lots of water activities on Lake Memphremagog, is another potential stop in the Northeast Kingdom. Not quite along the byway but still worth a visit is the town of Jay, home to Jay Peak Resort and the Pump House indoor water park (the only one of its kind in Vermont).

Aerial of Billings Farm & Museum in the fall.

Not only is wandering through the picturesque village of Woodstock worth the trip, but you'll also find some quintessential Vermont experiences here. Learn about the history of farm life and pet farm animals at Billings Farm & Museum, or simply stroll along the scenic walking trail and gardens there – including the 20,000-square-foot Sunflower House in mid-to-late August. Across the street, visit the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park, the only national park dedicated to conservation history in the U.S. There are 20-plus miles of trails, and ranger-led programs allow visitors to explore the impressive mansion on-site while learning about the conservation legacy of the families who lived there.

Tuck in for the night at the Woodstock Inn & Resort , one of the best hotels in Vermont . This historic inn has roots dating back to 1793 and was purchased by Laurance and Mary Rockefeller in 1967. Today, it offers lovely guest rooms and suites (including pet-friendly options) that combine the Rockefellers' love of nature and historic preservation. Guests can also enjoy its distinct restaurants – including the award-winning Red Rooster – plus a top-rated spa and an activity center where you can arrange off-site excursions such as fly-fishing and mountain biking.

Twin Farms: Barnard

If you're looking for a romantic getaway in Vermont , book a stay at adults-only Twin Farms , another one of the best Vermont hotels. At this intimate, all-inclusive hotel tucked into the countryside, guests have a choice of upscale yet cozy guest rooms, suites, cottages and luxury treehouses . Or, stay at the Farmhouse, whose four suites can be booked individually or together for groups. Select cottages at Twin Farms allow up to two dogs, with beds, blankets, treats, bowls and waste cans included in the additional pet fee.

Unique activities include bee tours, ax throwing and archery when the weather is warm; in the colder months, guests can enjoy options like skiing, ice fishing and skating. Of course, the Bridge House Spa and The Furo – a serene Japanese-inspired bath house surrounded by forest views – is perfect any time of year, as is the seasonally inspired food and wine program. In fact, Twin Farms places an emphasis on the dining experience, with premium meal options including gourmet picnic lunches and private dinners in the on-site wine cellar. Previous guests can't say enough good things about Twin Farms, noting the service is beyond compare.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors make the journey to Quechee State Park to see the Quechee Gorge – a 165-foot-deep canyon formed by glacial activity roughly 13,000 years ago. Past visitors say it's well worth the trip for the gorgeous (or gorge-ous) views from the bridge over the drop to the Ottauquechee River and from the bottom of a short hiking trail to the river's edge, particularly during foliage season. Beyond lookout points, the park offers plenty of outdoor activities like camping and fishing. Discover more about the great outdoors at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science's nearby Nature Center, which operates an educational avian wildlife rehabilitation clinic.

Emerald Lake State Park is a hiker favorite for its proximity to the Long Trail through the Green Mountains and the Appalachian Trail. Unique adventure-seekers might enjoy gold panning at Camp Plymouth State Park, watching ice climbers at Smugglers' Notch State Park in winter, and seeing hang gliders at Mount Ascutney State Park in the warmer months. Vermont has more than 50 state parks in total – a pretty impressive number for such a small state – so you are likely never far from a park worth exploring.

Abraham Lincoln may have been born to humble beginnings in a log cabin, but one generation later, his son Robert Lincoln became chairman of the Pullman Company, the largest manufacturing company of the day. Robert Lincoln and his wife Mary built the Hildene estate in Manchester in 1905 as a summer home, and only Lincoln descendants called it home until 1975.

Today, it stands as a memorial to the Lincoln family where visitors can take a self-guided tour of the impressive Georgian revival mansion and gardens, Lincoln-centric exhibits, Hildene's goat dairy farm, and about 12 miles of walking trails. Recent visitors praise the property as a slice of American history and a generally beautiful area to spend the day exploring.
