Tripp Suitcase Review: Affordable But Good Quality?

If you like to travel then you will know that finding affordable luggage that actually lasts and functions well is not easy to find. Cheaper suitcases either break easily, the zippers fail, or the wheels end up sticking, which means you end up dragging your suitcase instead of rolling it.

Tripp luggage might just be the answer to all these problems. Tripp specializes in making affordable suitcases that last and they have quite a range for you to choose from.

In this Tripp Suitcase Review, I will run through the pros, cons, specs, and details of some of Tripp’s most popular suitcases so that you can find an affordable suitcase to match all your travel needs.

Top Product Overview

Tripp suitcase review, tripp slate holiday 6 4-wheel suitcase.

First up is the Tripp Slate Holiday 6 4-Wheel Suitcase , a medium-sized hard-shell suitcase that is ideal to use as your checked luggage on shorter trips.

It comes with a tough polypropylene shell that is also extremely light, so you can use more of your allocated weight for your things rather than your suitcase.

The case stands up well to rough baggage handlers but it can dent easily, an issue that comes with it being so light. But, with the 5-year guarantee, Tripp will help you out if any damage occurs while you travel.

It also has a TSA lock on the outside so you can keep your belongings secure. There are two handles, one of which is a long retractable handle so that you can roll your suitcase with ease on the 4 super smooth wheels.

The zipper opening is reliable and works well. Inside you have two compartments to keep your things organized. One has luggage straps while the other has a zippered lining.

Overall, it is a stylish suitcase that does it all but it would be nice if it had a few pockets for storing smaller items in a more organized way.

  • Quite durable
  • 5-year guarantee
  • Very affordable
  • 2 compartments with a divider
  • 4 wheels for portability
  • Two retractable handles
  • 2 colors to choose from
  • Can dent easily

Product Information

  • Type: Checked
  • Size: 26 x 45 x 66 cm
  • Weight: 3.2 kg
  • Compartments: 2
  • Shell: Hard

Tripp Black II World 4-Wheel Cabin Suitcase

The Tripp Black II World 4-Wheel Cabin Suitcase is an ideal choice if you are looking for a carry-on case as it meets the requirements of most airlines.

It comes with a cool squared-off embossed design and is available in both black and white. The hard shell is strong, there is a TSA lock, and the wheels are top quality which makes rolling it around a piece of cake.

There is also a TSA lock on the side should you wish to check it in or have to at the gate which happens in some cases.

Inside you’ll find the case split into 2 compartments so that you can keep things separated. The divider and straps ensure everything stays secure when you open the case too. As a carry-on it would be nice to see some extras, like a laptop sleeve or small zippered pockets, sadly these are missing.

Overall, it is a super affordable cabin case that is going to last and work well for years.

  • Complies with cabin requirements
  • 4 wheels and a comfy handle
  • Light and easy to roll around
  • Built to last
  • Comes in 2 colors
  • Can scratch easily
  • Type: Cabin
  • Size: 21 x 36 x 55 cm
  • Weight: 2.6 kg

Tripp Graphite Style Lite Hard 4 Wheel Suitcase

The Tripp Graphite Style Lite Hard 4-Wheel Suitcase is a large suitcase made for taking everything you need on longer trips around the world. I love the sleek graphite design on this suitcase, it looks awesome.

For its size, it is very light to give you some extra weight for more items. The hard shell does a good job of protecting your things too and it handles the rigors of travel well too.

There are 3 handles on this case so that you can carry it or roll it around with ease. The long retractable handle works well and the wheels are smooth as butter on all surfaces.

Like all hardshell trip suitcases, this has two compartments on the inside. One comes with straps and the other with a zippered liner so that you can keep everything secure.

It also comes with a TSA combination lock on the side, but this is not the toughest lock around and it can break in transit. Luckily, if this or any other damage happens when flying, it is covered under the 5-year guarantee.

  • Great style
  • Light but tough
  • Comfy handles
  • Spacious for long trips
  • 2 compartments to keep things organized
  • Excellent value
  • Comes with a 5-year guarantee
  • The lock is not so durable
  • Size: 32 x 54 x 81 cm
  • Weight: 4.6 kg

Tripp Sky Blue Chic Large 4-Wheel Suitcase

Tripp Sky Blue Chic Large 4 Wheel Suitcase is a lovely color blue that adds a bit of life to your travels, as most suitcases are rather dull colors. It looks great and you will be able to spot it very easily on the luggage carousel.

This is also a large suitcase made for longer trips and has all the same features as the Tripp suitcase we looked at above. There are 3 handles, a TSA lock, 4 smooth wheels, and the hard shell is pretty solid.

That being said, the shell on this case can get dented/scuffed/scratched easily if it is treated roughly by baggage handlers – the 5-year guarantee has got you covered though.

Inside, you will find two compartments to pack your things in with a divider/straps to keep everything secure.

Between the affordable price, great color, and excellent functionality, this is a great suitcase for big trips.

  • Great color
  • Easy to spot
  • Ideal for long trips
  • Lots of space
  • 5 year guarantee
  • Excellent portability
  • 2 compartments
  • Can get damaged by rough handlers
  • Size: 32 x 51 x 77 cm
  • Weight: 3.5 kg

Tripp Soft Pink Lite 4 Wheel Suitcase

The Tripp Soft Pink Lite 4 Wheel Suitcase comes in a light pink, almost rose gold color with a lot of texture – there is no doubt that it has style.

It comes as a large, medium, or cabin suitcase so you can choose the ideal size for your travel needs, or buy one of each if you need to update all your luggage.

Like all hard-shell Tripp suitcases, it is light, and tough, and has a TSA lock, 3 handles, and 4 wheels that make rolling it around very easy. The inside also has 2 compartments with a divider/straps so you can keep your things separate/organized.

It is a little annoying that there are no extra little pockets on the divider. It is also not the toughest Tripp suitcase but that is a trade-off for it being so light.

  • Pretty in pink
  • Stylish looking
  • Easy to roll around
  • Multiple compartments
  • Light but strong
  • Great for big trips
  • Could be sturdier

Tripp Pewter Absolute Lite 4W Expandable

The Tripp Pewter Absolute Lite 4W Expandable is a little different from the Tripp suitcase we have looked at so far. Firstly, its pewter textured finish is super stylish and it comes in some great colors too.

Its main standout is that it is expandable. There is an extra zipper around the middle which when opened expands the case so that you can pack more inside it. This is very handy whether you choose to buy it as a cabin, medium, or large-sized suitcase.

Otherwise, it has all the standard things that come with a Tripp suitcase – three lands, 4 smooth wheels, a TSA lock, and two separate packing compartments on the inside. It is also light but the shell can get damaged if treated roughly during transit.

  • Good looking
  • 3 colors to choose from
  • Lightweight
  • 4 wheels for smooth rolling
  • TSA lock secures it
  • Multiple compartments keep things organized
  • Can break under strain
  • Size: 20 x 35 x 55 cm
  • Weight: 3.9 kg

Tripp Black Ultra Lite 4-Wheel Suitcase

The Tripp Black Ultra Lite 4 Wheel Suitcase is super light and this is due to it being a soft-shell suitcase. The shell is made from strong polyester and being soft, it can’t dent or scratch which is a bonus in my eyes.

Like the Tripp hard-shells, it also has 4 smooth wheels and 3 handles, but it does not come with a TSA lock.

There is a zippered pocket on the outside which is a nice addition, and just one packing compartment on the inside, so keeping things separate is not an option.

The one annoying thing along with the single compartment, is that it can fall over if not held. However, this is not common and the 4 wheels usually keep it standing upright.

  • Cabin size for most airlines
  • Handy exterior pocket
  • Spacious compartment
  • Stylish in 2 colors
  • Super light and portable
  • Tough polyester build
  • Available in larger sizes
  • Great value
  • Can fall over if not held
  • Only 1 packing compartment
  • Weight: 2.1 kg
  • Compartments: 1
  • Shell: Soft

Tripp Charcoal Superlite 4W 4 Wheel Suitcase

The Tripp Charcoal Superlite 4W 4 Wheel Suitcase is another soft-shell case but it takes things to another level compare to the one we looked at above.

This suitcase is expandable, so you can get some extra packing space when you need it and this is available across the 3 sizes it comes in.

It is super light but strong as the shell is made from thick polyester. There are 3 handles and 4 excellent wheels for portability, and there are 2 packing compartments on the inside too.

If you are looking for a soft-shell suitcase, this is the one to go for in my eyes as it has it all.

  • Expandable for extra space
  • Soft and light
  • Made of durable polyester
  • Internal compartment and pocket
  • Comes in 2 colors and 2 more sizes
  • Built-in luggage tag
  • No TSA lock
  • Size: 32 x 43 x 70 cm
  • Weight: 3.3 kg

Tripp Champagne Horizon TSA 4 Wheel Suitcase

The Tripp Champagne Horizon TSA 4-Wheel Suitcase is another hard-shell suitcase. Its design is what separates it out from the others with its glossy textured look that comes in three colors.

Otherwise, it has all the features you would expect from a Tripp hard shell. There is a TSA lock, 3 handles, 4 smooth wheels, and 2 compartments on the inside with a divider/straps.

The suitcase is light and the shell is tough enough, but it can get damaged if it is treated badly during transit.

  • Very portable
  • Cool color options
  • Divied compartments
  • Super affordable
  • Can break when treated badly
  • Size: 31 x 53 x 76 cm
  • Weight: 4.5 kg

Tripp Mint Retro II TSA 4 Wheel Suitcase

The Tripp Mint Retro II TSA 4 Wheel Suitcase looks pretty awesome in its minty color with its textured lines running up and down it. It definitely has more style than a lot of the others we have looked at.

Being a hard shell, it is light, strong, and seems to handle knocks better than other Tripp suitcases.

It also comes with 3 handles and 4 wheels for great portability and a TSA lock too. On the inside, there are two separate compartments we you’d expect.

This case is available in all sizes from cabin to large, is very affordable, works well, and had a 5-year guarantee – overall it is pretty great.

  • Good color options
  • Great handles
  • Super portable
  • Good value for money
  • None I can find
  • Size: 28 x 46 x 67 cm

What To Look For In A Trip Suitcase

Style & design.

Since most Tripp suitcases are pretty much the same when it comes to features, the one main differentiator is each one’s design and style. Tripp obviously knows this as they have such a great range of styles for you to choose from.

You can choose from classics to bright colors, textured looks, and lots more. It is nice to like your luggage rather than it just be a tool so be sure to pick the design you like the most.

Size & Space

Tripp suitcases come in three sizes; cabin, medium, and large. If you travel often then I would highly recommend getting one of each, if you need them, that way you are covered for every trip you might want to take.

The cabin cases are sized correctly for most airlines’ carry-on restrictions and are ideal for weekend getaways. The medium-sized cases are perfect for 1-2 week trips, while the larger ones are great for longer trips or if you like to travel with a lot of options.

You also have the choice of going with one of Tripp’s expandable suitcases which gives you some extra space when you need it – this is super handy.

Hard or Soft Shell

Choosing between a hard shell or a soft shell suitcase is tricky. Hard shells are waterproof, provide more protection for your things, and you get two packing compartments. However, they are more likely to break/dent/scratch than soft shells.

Soft shells are lighter and less prone to damage but are only water-resistant and they usually have just one packing compartment.

Portability

When it comes to portability, Tripp gets it right! All their suitcases come with 2 grab handles (top & side) so that you can lift the cases with ease. There is also a long retractable handle which makes rolling your suitcase very easy and this is underpinned by 4 super smooth 360-degree wheels.

Internal Organization

All hard-shell suitcases from Tripp have two separate packing compartments and I love this. Being able to keep things separated is super handy. The soft shell cases have a single compartment in most cases, which is not ideal in my eyes.

My one main gripe with Tripp is that they do not add a zippered pocket to the divider in their cases. It would add a lot and wouldn’t take much to do.

Price, Durability, & Warranty

All Tripp suitcases are very affordable and come with a 5-year guarantee. Being so light, the hard shells can get damaged when treated roughly but with the 5-year guarantee this is covered.

Overall, they are durable and things like the handles/zipper/wheels last a long time. The TSA locks can get damaged but again this is covered in the guarantee.

Are Tripp cases good?

Yes, Tripp cases are good as far as I am concerned. It is hard to find a suitcase that ticks all the same boxes as Tripp’s for such an affordable price. Between the locks, excellent wheels, great handles, and good internal organization they are great value for money.

The only consistent issue seems to be that the hard shells can get damaged quite easily when thrown aroun during transit – but this is covered by the 5-year guarantee that comes with each Tripp suitcase.

Where is Tripp made?

All Tripp suitcases are designed in the UK but are made in China, as you would probably expect. Anything this affordable is usually made in China.

Who owns Tripp luggage?

No one owns Tripp luggage, it is a completely independent company with its HQ based in the UK.

Our Favorite Tripp Suitcases

Best On a Budget

The best Tripp suitcase on a budget is the Tripp Slate Holiday 6 4-Wheel Suitcase . It is like all the other Tripp hard-shells but more affordable for some reason and still comes with all the excellent features.

Best Carry-On

The best carry-on from Tripp in my eyes is the Tripp Black II World 4 Wheel Cabin Suitcase . I love the design, it is also very robust for a hard shell, super affordable and it has everything you need. It is easy to roll around, has locks, has separate packing compartments, and more.

Best Suitcase For Check In

The Tripp Graphite Style Lite Hard 4-Wheel Suitcase is my favorite for longer trips. It has a sleek design I love, a ton of space, is tough, and is super portable. The two packing compartments are well separated too and I love the orange detail around the interior and zipper.

Why Am I Reviewing the Holiday 6 Cabin Suitcase?

We got our hands on the latest model of Tripp’s cabin suitcase range, the Holiday 6. After owning a number of Tripp cases over the last few years, I thought it was about time I did a review.

Some of the links in this post are affiliate links which means that we may earn a small commission from any purchases that you make, at no extra cost to you. This helps us to keep the lights on and blog posts flowing at Roaming Required HQ. We thank you for your support

The Holiday 6 has dimensions of 55cm x 40 x 20 making it carry-on compliant with the current strict dimensions imposed by many European budget airlines like Ryanair , EasyJet and Wizz Air. It’s also compliant with full-service airlines like British Airways.

Of course these requirements can change so we recommend you double check with your airline prior to departing for the airport as bag sizes and weight restrictions can vary from one carrier to the next.

tripp travel bag

The Exterior

The Tripp Holiday 6 is a hard clamshell design made of 100% polypropylene built around an aluminium frame. These elements contribute to the case’s light weight, coming in at just 2.7kg.

The plastic, rather than fabric, exterior means it is splash resistant should you be caught in an unexpected rainstorm or need to wheel your bag through a puddle. It’s worth noting that water can penetrate through the reinforced single zip so the case is not entirely waterproof.

Tripp Holiday 6 Cabin Suitcase Banana yellow

The hard shell has decorative blocks on the front, frequently seen in this range and one that certainly contributes to brand recognition. As is the case with most hard shell cases, there is no accessible front pocket which you can use to easily retrieve small items.

Unlike previous models, the Holiday 6 model does not have a discreet built in name plate where you can put your contact information should you be separated from your bag. We’d recommend getting a separate luggage tag or a bespoke bag belt so you know which bag is yours.

With four wheels are all swivel caster style meaning the case can spin full circle and manoeuvres effortlessly on busy streets, tube platforms and pavements. It’s so smooth that you will need to keep hold of it on the Tube/train as it will roll around with the movement of the train. The hard plastic wheels are a little louder than hoped for when pulling along on footpaths, but with hard plastic wheels comes durability. In previous models of this same case, we had no issue with the wheels aside from a bit of a squeaky wheel after 3 years of regular use.  Some lubricant (WD40 for example) to the wheel and the problem was fixed!

Tripp Holiday 6 Cabin Suitcase Banana yellow

The retractable telescopic handle to drag the bag has two heights at which you can set it.  At 6ft/183cm tall, I prefer to set the telescopic handle at mid height while Russ prefers his fully extended. Whichever your preference, there is an option to suit you.

Telescopic Handle of Tripp Holiday 6 Cabin Suitcase Banana yellow

To carry the bag up and down stairs, in and out of the overhead bins etc, there is a grab handle on the top of the case.

Handle of Tripp Holiday 6 Cabin Suitcase Banana yellow

Using the retractable telescopic handle to carry the bag is the quickest way to break it, so ensure you use only the grab handle provided to lift the case. Unfortunately on the cabin bag of the Holiday 6 range, there is no handle on the long side of the case. I would use this handle should I need to store the case sideways, on an overhead luggage rack on a train carriage for example. There is a side handle on the larger models of this range.

For the security conscious, the Tripp range comes with a handy security feature, by way of a TSA Lock. The Travel Sentry approved lock allows your luggage to be opened, inspected, and relocked by security authorities without damaging your case.

TSA Lock Tripp Holiday 6 Cabin Suitcase Banana yellow

The three-digit combination works by securing the zippers into place. The Tripp range comes with a handy guide to creating your bespoke code, ensuring peace of mind from any unauthorised access when your bag is out of sight.

The Holiday 6 cabin bag range comes in some very fun, bright and candylike colours which I think makes it easy to help easily identify your bag in a sea of black suitcases.

The range comes in six colours:

  • Banana (yellow)
  • Slate (grey)
  • Watermelon (red)

Aside from Slate and Black, the other colours may be a bit too flamboyant for many corporate business travellers with conservative dress codes. In my opinion, for leisure travellers the lively palette screams fun vacation vibes.

The Interior

The clamshell design means the zip runs through the middle of the suitcase, enabling you to pack both sides of the case. This hinged design has pluses and minuses:

  • The shallow compartments make it easier to find items
  • It’s easier to pack

Zip on Tripp Holiday 6 Cabin Suitcase Banana yellow

  • You need to fully open the case to retrieve an item, which is especially difficult when space is limited, like on board a plane/train
  • When staying in a hotel and wish to use the luggage rack, most are not designed to hold a clamshell case, but rather a traditional style where one flip up the lid against the wall
  • No external pocket for quick and easy access to retrieve small items

Whether or not you like the clamshell design is entirely a personal decision and not reflective of Tripp or other manufacturers.

Compartments

The two polyester lined sections come with different features, making it easy to secure items in place by either elasticated packing straps or a mesh divider secured by a zip.

On one compartment is a stretchy mesh divider which I like to use for my clothes and packing cubes.  The mesh does have some give to it should you need to pack bulky items for a winter break.

The other side uses elasticated packing straps to secure items.  This side I use for bigger items, such as a toiletries bag, a tripod and shoes. There are some ridges on this side, from the frame for the telescopic handle. Make use of the ridges to separate and secure your items and keep everything in place.

The Holiday 6 is the latest addition to the Tripp Cabin suitcase range.  It’s big enough for a weekend break, capable of accommodating enough clothing and other essential items for a short break.

I love the price point of Tripp suitcases. They provide the necessities in luggage; strong, ultra-lightweight bags for a great price.

As an added bonus, Tripp stands by their products with a 5-year guarantee.

Need a Larger Case?

This review is for the Tripp Holiday 6 four wheel cabin size suitcase.  Should you need something bigger, the range also has a medium (66L capacity) and large (102L capacity) cases.

  • Ease of use: 4.8/5
  • Design: 4/5
  • Performance: 4.5/5
  • Large enough for weekend trips
  • Dimensions are budget airline compliant

We Didn’t Like

  • No internal pockets for small items like house keys
  • No inbuilt external ID/name plate
  • No side handle on the long side of case
  • No expandable zip

Minimal Design and Maximum Impact - Are Tripp Suitcases Worth It? Our Review

Tripp is a relatively new luggage brand that launched in 2016, known for their distinctive hardside suitcases with colorful, minimalist designs.

The unique selling point of Tripp suitcases is their lightweight and durable polycarbonate hard shell construction coupled with vegan leather trim for the handles and accents. This makes them fun-looking yet functional.

The hard shells resist abrasion, especially on the speckled matte finishes. The interior organization is basic but useful with crisscross straps and zippered pockets.

Smooth-rolling dual spinner wheels and a telescoping handle provide maneuverability. The carry-on and checked sizes have TSA-approved locks for security.

Reviews are generally positive regarding Tripp's eye-catching aesthetics, light-yet-sturdy construction, and reasonable prices given the materials. Critics note the limited color selections and basic interiors compared to higher-end brands.

Overall, Tripp makes for a stylish and capable hardside luggage option for travelers wanting a durable polycarbonate material alongside vegan leather touches at mid-range price points. The brand isn't revolutionary but satisfies needs for visual flair and resilient protection.

Here are some of the top rated Tripp suitcases to consider purchasing:

Tripp Award 2-Wheel Carry-On - $198 This 20 inch carry-on comes in fun colors like lavender and has a lightweight polycarbonate hard shell with vegan leather accents. The interior features crisscross straps and a zippered pocket for organization. Dual spinner wheels provide smooth mobility.

Tripp Duke 2-Wheel Checked Suitcase - $248 For longer trips, the Duke comes in a 25 inch checked suitcase model while maintaining the durable hardside shell. The compression straps help fit more. The lock is TSA approved for security.

The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks

Kit Dillon

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

When you open up your favorite carry-on travel backpack, it should feel like you’re opening the door to a well-organized closet or sitting down at a clean desk, with everything in the right place and easy to reach.

This is your moment to center yourself, no matter how chaotic the journey.

What we considered

A 45-liter bag maximizes overhead space but can get heavy when fully packed; 35-liter bags tend to be more manageable.

A bag with a clamshell design opens like a book and is the easiest to pack, but a bag that opens traditionally tends to have more structure.

Ideally, a travel backpack has handles on all sides—especially the bottom—so you can pull it out of overhead bins or from under seats.

Some internal pockets are useful, but major organizing is better managed with packing cubes.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack and the larger Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L offer the best combination of features, quality, and durability. Both bags are exemplary carry-on travel backpacks that are designed for comfort, durability, and organization. Though these backpacks are great as companion bags for any trip, they’re designed to ultimately replace all of your other luggage and become your exclusive bag as you travel.

This style of packing is not for everyone, but once some people try it, they’re forever hooked. Finding the right bag is a personal choice, though, and no single bag will appeal to everyone. That’s why we also have picks that are great for people who travel for work , others that are designed to be carried over long distances , and a bag that’s basically luggage on your back .

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, best small carry-on bag for most situations: cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack, best large bag for most situations: peak design travel backpack 45l, best mobile office: patagonia black hole mlc 45l, best bag for long journeys on foot: osprey farpoint 40 and fairview 40, best bag if you need a large suitcase on your back: tortuga travel backpack pro 40l, other good carry-on travel backpacks, how we picked and tested, the competition.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade, and I have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack, whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that, and I spent another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

I reached out to writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag: Eytan Levy, the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website; James Feess, founder of The Savvy Backpacker ; and Sharon Gourlay, of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

We researched and tested bags designed for those who want to travel light and stay flexible while flying, without the burden of checking luggage. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey.

  • When you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage, it’s easy to remain more mobile. And it’s easier to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but also about yourself and what you really need day to day.
  • Size and weight still matter. If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags tend not to be carry-on-friendly, however, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them.
  • No single backpack is perfect for everyone. Before you make any purchase, consider some basic points. How much can you carry? And where do you usually visit: the city or outback? Travel gear should feel like a welcome companion—there to support you when you need it but unobtrusive when you don’t.

45-liter bag vs. 35-liter bag

A graphic comparing the difference in capacity between a 45-liter and a 35-liter backpack.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

A versatile small pack for a week or a weekend.

This durable bag’s clamshell design makes it easy to organize your stuff. And due to its strap design, this bag can be worn on your back or carried in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag for getaways lasting just a few days or a whole week.

It’s one bag that can do it all. This is a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

The packed Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack, shown fully open so that the contents are accessible.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
  • We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but after many years of traveling with our bag, we’ve found that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight: 3 pounds 5 ounces Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: adventurous Colors: assorted

A person stands by a wooden fence outdoors while wearing the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L, our larger pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

  • It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
  • More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

Capacity: 45 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: back-panel loader Style: minimalist and unobtrusive Color: black, sage

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack, is held in midair by a person wearing a plaid shirt.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

May be out of stock

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

  • We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

The Osprey Farpoint/ Fairview 40 Travel Pack, one of our also-great picks for the best carry-on travel backpack, shown in black.

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

tripp travel bag

Osprey Fairview 40

For long distances and smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

View of the straps on the reverse of the Osprey travel backpack.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

  • For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight (Farpoint): 3 pounds 3 ounces Weight (Fairview): 3 pounds 2 ounces Main compartment access: front-panel loader Style: active Colors (Farpoint): green (Gopher), gray (Tunnel Vision), blue (Muted Space), black Colors (Fairview): blue (Winter Night), red (Zircon), blue (Night Jungle), black

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L, our also-great pick for the best carry-on travel backpack.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

The Tortuga Backpack Pro shown with the front clamshell lid in the open position.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

  • Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
  • It's heavy. We’ve fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be (the difference is noticeable), and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. We are currently testing a new, lighter, and less-expensive version of this pack—aptly named the Travel Backpack Lite 40L —and will report back soon.  In the meantime, if you think you would struggle carrying the Tortuga, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

Capacity: 40 liters Weight: 4½ pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: minimal, with a rigid construction Color: black

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

  • Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

A graphic illustrating a clamshell bag opening

  • Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
  • Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
  • Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
  • Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
  • Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
  • Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

Which Tripp suitcase range is best? We review the brand's top choices

Tripp is a well-known UK luggage brand that’s a crowd favourite, but which of its suitcases is right for you?

tripp holiday 7 suitcases in red blue yellow and black

We’ve researched the brand, sieved through its various luggage lines and worked with an in-house reviewer to determine the top Tripp suitcase ranges to get you ready for those long-awaited holidays.

We've also taken a closer look at Tripp, what it offers as a brand and why its luggage is so loved by travellers.

Read on for the juicy details.

Top picks at a glance

tripp holiday 6 suitcases in black

The best Tripp suitcases for your adventures

Whether you’re dusting off your summer wardrobe or looking to bundle up in cooler climates, don't let your luggage hold back the adventure. Aptly named, these Tripp luggage lines are our favourite choice to see you through years of travel, both near and far.

Let’s dive into the suitcases before checking in on what Tripp offers as a brand.

The overall best Tripp suitcase line

tripp holiday 6 suitcases in black

The Holiday 7 Range

In turquoise

Specifications

Capacity: 37 litres (Cabin), 66-72 litres (Medium), 102 litres (Large)

Weight: 2.85 kgs (Cabin), 3.5 kgs (Medium), 4 kgs (Large)

Pros & Cons

Lightweight across the board

Four spinner wheels

Built-in TSA lock on all sizes

Five-year guarantee

Cabin and Large aren't expandable

Material can show wear easily

Before the Holiday 7 line hit the scene, Tripp's predecessor, the Holiday 6 range, was consistently among the retailer's top-rated suitcases for us and people across the UK. In other words, the new and improved line has big shoes to fill, but we're already liking what we've seen from our testing of the medium case.

The range includes three sizes (the Cabin, Medium and Large) of hard suitcases in a selection of colours. We're excited to see that the Medium has been upgraded with the option to expand and the Holiday 7 Large bag features in this year’s best lightweight luggage picks.

blue tripp holiday suitcase

No matter what size you’re eyeing up, you’ll get a number of great features including four sets of dual wheels (an upgrade from the Holiday 6) , an integrated TSA lock and a retractable handle . We found that these all make the case easy to wheel through an airport and super secure as you travel.

In addition to its make-sense features, you'll find a sleekly designed exterior now available in a great range of colours and two interior compartments (one with a zippered mesh divider and the other with colour-matched packing straps).

While we love the Holiday 7 range for its look, we're also fans of its reasonable price tag; you can get a great set of luggage without breaking the bank . And each of the cases is backed by Tripp’s five-year guarantee .

We found the set great for longer trips thanks to how roomy each piece is within and just how lightweight the overall case is.

A close runner-up with added style points

Tripp Black Chic 4 Wheel Suitcases

The Tripp Chic Range

Capacity: 37 litres (Cabin), 67-72 litres (Medium), 102 litres (Large)

Weight: 2.3 kgs (Cabin), 3.2 kgs (Medium), 3.5 kgs (Large)

Minimalistic, sleek design

‘Amazon’s Choice’ product

No side handle for added carrying convenience

Limited colour options

A close runner-up to the Holiday 7 range is the Chic series. This set of hard suitcases has similar perks to other Tripp cases, but these are among the best ultra-lightweight options offered by the brand .

Every Chic suitcase boasts a number of other features, too. They have four wheel although they aren't dual sets like you now get on the Holiday 7 , an integrated TSA lock, a retractable handle and a modern exterior look.

Inside, two compartments keep you organised with one featuring a zippered mesh divider and the other with packing straps. What we also love about this range is that the Chic Medium is expandable, so you can increase its capacity.

In terms of price, the Chic range is among the more affordable options. Also, all of these suitcases are backed by Tripp’s five-year guarantee.

The best fabric option

tripp ultra lite suitcases in black

The Ultra Lite Range

Capacity: 25 litres (Cabin), 62 litres (Medium), 94 litres (Large)

Weight: 2.1 kgs (Cabin), 2.6 kgs (Medium), 3 kgs (Large)

Extra lightweight

No nonsense design

Smaller capacities

May bulge if overpacked

Traditional look is harder to identify at baggage claim

If luggage with a hard exterior just isn’t your thing, Tripp offers soft suitcases , too. Our favourite is the Ultra Lite range.

Hitting the highlights you’d expect from the brand's cases — four wheels, a spacious interior and a retractable handle — it’s Tripp's most no-nonsense line of luggage . And we respect it.

You do sacrifice some capacity with a fabric suitcase, but you gain that back when it comes to weight. Keeping things light, the fabric these cases are made of is durable but nothing fancy. As we said, it’s a ‘does what it says on the tin’ kind of case. For the soft-sided suitcase die-hards among us though, this isn’t a deal breaker.

A single large compartment is complemented by an exterior zipper pocket that lets you store items you need to access easily. Its sleek retractable handle and discreet top carry handle are a plus, but we do wish the cabin bag had a side handle, too.

In our opinion, this line of cases is great for those sticking to a budget ahead of your holidays or those who travel often for work. Like the Chic, they're among Tripp’s most affordable ranges, and they do their job well.

The perfect cabin-sized option

Charcoal coloured soft shell cabin-sized Superlite suitcase from Tripp

TRIPP Style Lite Graphite Cabin Suitcase

Capacity: 28 litres (36 litres expanded)

Weight: 2.5 kg

Integrated TSA lock

Made from durable polyester

Front pocket

No zip on front pocket

If you’re travelling light, you want a lightweight suitcase to match. And the Superlite lives up to its name.

Weighing just 2.5 kg with a capacity of up to 36 litres , this nifty wheeled case is ideal for business trips and weekends away.

But it’s not just its compact size we love. This case also boasts internal packing straps and a mesh pocket, perfect for separating your undergarments. The exterior front pocket is also ideal for stowing passports and any essential travel documents.

Our favourite Tripp medium-sized case

purple coloured, textured medium-sized suitcase with four spinner wheels from Tripp

TRIPP Horizon Aubergine Medium Suitcase

Capacity: 66 litres

Weight: 3.9 kg

Built-in TSA-approved lock

Available in three colourways

Not expandable

Made from durable polypropylene, we love the unique purple colourway of this Horizon suitcase – something appreciated by numerous customers who rave about its stylish aesthetic.

Aside from its appearance, this suitcase boasts benefits that help make travel a breeze including a TSA-approved lock, multiple handle options including ones on the top and side, and an internal packing strap and zipped compartment.

Tripp’s best large suitcase

Pewter coloured shiny finish large-sized suitcase with top handle from Tripp

TRIPP Absolute Lite Pewter Large Suitcase

Capacity: 113 litres

Weight: 4.6 kg

ABS hard shell offers extra protection

Gloss finish may show scratches easily

If you’re heading away for a significant length of time — or need extra packing space for large items (winterwear, we’re looking at you) — then chances are you need a large suitcase. And Tripp has got you covered with its Absolute Lite range.

As the name suggests, these cases are designed to be lightweight yet spacious, with this particular model offering up to 113 litres of secure storage. Featuring an in-built TSA-approved lock and internal packing straps on either side , you can travel in confidence knowing your possessions are safe inside its durable (partially recycled) ABS hard shell.

Other benefits of the large Absolute Lite case are its useful top carry handle, side grab handle and extendable trolley handle as well as its convenient 360° spinner wheels.

Despite its large size, navigating the airport has never been easier.

With an overall rating of 4.4 stars, from more than 380 reviews on Amazon, this is a reliable case you’re sure to be thankful for for years to come.

Overall review of Tripp suitcases

Moving on from the best luggage ranges offered by Tripp, it’s time to dive into the brand itself.

As we said at the start, it's a UK-based company that has been designing luggage for more than 20 years . In that time, it’s become one of the best-selling suitcase brands in the UK and a number of other European countries. If you’ve travelled at all, you’ve probably seen one or two of these bags rolling through airports.

What we like most

Here are all the ways in which Tripp shines. From customer service to design, there’s a lot to love about the brand.

Affordable luggage is easy to come by

The most expensive Tripp bag on Amazon, the Supreme Lock Large Suitcase , is around the £99 mark at full price — which is only a fraction price of other big luggage names like Samsonite, Away or Antler.

In fact, if you shop any of the three ranges we’ve raved about above, you can get an entire three-piece set for less than you’d spend on Away’s The Bigger Carry-On .

Pretty great, right?

Airline-approved cabin bag sizes and lightweight design

Whether you’re flying EasyJet, Lufthansa, British Air or Ryanair, Tripp tells you upfront which of its cabin bags are best suited for what airline . In fact, its new and improved Holiday 7 Cabin Suitcase is suitable for Ryanair Priority, EasyJet Up Front and British Airways to name a few.

Of course, it is recommended that you double-check airline cabin bag regulations , particularly weight, before banking on sailing through baggage check.

An added bonus as airlines have become stricter on luggage weight allowances is that Tripp emphasises lightweight designs . This cuts down on the stress sweats that set in when standing in line at the check-in desk. Or is that just us?

tripp holiday 6 line in colour blocks

Tripp’s five-year guarantee

No suitcase is indestructible, so we appreciate that Tripp offers a five-year guarantee with all of its suitcases and bags. While this won’t work for normal wear and tear or any damage at the hands of an airline, it does mean that if there is a manufacturer defect that presents a problem, you’re able to exchange the suitcase.

A solid range of colours and styles

In addition to the three we’ve highlighted above, there are lots of options that can tick the boxes of most anyone’s style available with this luggage manufacturer. Admittedly, you won’t find quite the colour range that some newer brands offer and some lines aren't as colourful, but we’re pretty happy with the selection at Tripp.

Where Tripp could improve

Hey, what brand is perfect? After researching and testing out some Tripp luggage, here are a few things to note before you hop on the Tripp train.

This likely won’t be your last suitcase ever

While we feel that Tripp suitcases are a great option in their price point, Tripp suitcases aren’t built to last decades. Among the top issues, customers seem to have are faulty wheels and faulty handles, both of which are pretty important to jet-setters and train catchers.

That said, it's promising to see that the luggage manufacturer has addressed this issue in its Holiday line updates having swapped single wheels for dual sets.

Built-in TSA locks are great, but…

While we love the built-in TSA lock that comes standard on almost all of Tripp’s hard suitcases, they can prove to be difficult to use.

Our in-house reviewer reported that on the first trip she took with her Tripp cabin bag, the integrated lock jammed. ‘TSA had to pry my suitcase open with a fork,’ she said, ‘which obviously broke the lock and was very embarrassing, too!’ After her holiday, she was able to exchange the bag, thanks to that five-year guarantee.

Ingenuity and flair

Reliable and often good-looking, Tripp bags aren’t to be sniffed at, but the brand does leave a little to be desired in the creativity department. In other words, these bags don’t break the mould — a fun perk we’re seeing with other, albeit more expensive luggage brands — but perhaps that’s why we come back to Tripp time after time.

black and ice blue tripp world suitcases on colour blocks

Is this luggage durable?

In short, yes .

Are they going to last forever? No. But whether you’re a rough-and-tumble traveller when it comes to your suitcases or you treat them with the utmost care in transit, your Tripp will see you through a lot of trips .

Our reviewer noted that her hard-shell Tripp case wasn’t impermeable — a bit of overpacking bent out the side, but it later popped back into shape — but it held its own.

In our opinion, the quality of a Tripp case reflects its price point.

Are Tripp suitcases worth it?

If you want cutting-edge design and feature upon feature, Tripp might not suit you. But if you're after good-quality, affordable bags , your search may just be over.

The Holiday 7 , Chic and Ultra Lite lines are crowd-favourite luggage ranges offered by the retailer that top our list for size, durability, affordability and conservative looks.
