Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Electric Bike Review

Trek’s hub motor electric bike with a torque sensor.

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Stagger is Trek’s first electric bike with a hub drive motor and torque sensor. This is a lightweight electric bike looking towards the entry level rider. The Dual Sport+ 2 is built out with a nice component spec and ready to ride home, right out of a Trek store.

trek dual sport plus electric bike

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Stagger is a class 1 electric bike with pedal assist up to 20mph. It has a 250 watt hour battery internally mounted in the frame. This powers the 250 watt hour rear hub motor that has 40nm of torque. There is a torque sensor to activate the motor. A torque sensor measures how hard the rider is pedaling to determine how much electric power to push to the bike. The harder you pedal, the more power it gives to the motor.

It has a Shimano 9 speed drive train and uses Hydraulic disc brakes with 160mm rotors for strong and effective stopping power. The controller is a simple three button layout with LED indicators to tell you what mode you are in. There are three pedal assist modes you can choose from which can be custom tuned by a Trek Dealer. There is an integrated headlight and tail light that turn on with the bike. The wheels are 27.5” wheels with 2” tires mounted on them and there are mounting points for a rear rack as well.

The size medium weighs 38.1 pounds and has up to 35 miles of range. You also have the option to use an 250Wh range extender you can purchase separately. This step through model of the Dual Sport plus 2 costs $2,399.

There are a lot of things we liked about the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Stagger . When we first picked it up and loaded it into the car we noticed that it was light in weight. Coming in under 40lbs it made loading it into the car nice and easy.

The Dual Sport+ 1 also has a sleek look with the battery integrated seamlessly into the frame. It looks like an analog bike at first glance, you don’t see any of the rear hub motor since it is hidden behind the large rear cassette. The motor is also nearly silent, when pedaling in the lowest settings you hear no motor noise, and barely any in the highest setting. The 9 speed Shimano drive train pairs well for this bike, giving you a good range of gears throughout the 9 speeds.

The torque sensor which activates the motor assist on this bike is very smooth and gives a very natural bike ride feel to it. Having the torque sensor, that measures the pressure you are applying to each pedal stroke, versus a cadence sensor, which just senses pedal movement, makes this feel a lot more like an analog bike would feel just with some extra boost. The harder you pedal, the more assist you get, so you get a nice workout as well.

The wheel and tire spec make this comfortable on rough roads and can handle a gravel road or trail with ease. The Stagger edition is also very convenient when having to get on or off the bike as well as at stops, There is still a cross bar which helps with the stiffness of the bike, but it does not get in the way when stepping forward.

Having a support system from a brand like Trek that has many physical shops is also very beneficial. We had an issue with the lights when we first got it so we called a Trek shop in the area and they told us to bring the bike in and they were able to troubleshoot the problem and get it taken care of right away. Having in person help with from a shop makes a big difference in the overall experience of owning a bike. The shop can also custom tune your pedal assist levels to your liking, they mentioned many people turn down their first pedal assist for maximum range, 2 for normal cruising and then turn up pedal assist 3 for maximum hill climbing power.

trek dual sport plus electric bike

There are just a few things on the Dual Spot +  2 stagger plus that we would have liked to see on it. . One of the things is that it does not have a display screen to show you speed/battery percentage/range. There is a thumb controller with LED lights to indicate battery levels and pedal assist mode, but it is nice to be able to see your speed/range on an actual screen.

It’s nice that there is an option for a range extender to double the battery capacity, but this will take up the water bottle cage mount and then you will not have a place to mount a water bottle. It would be nice to have a place for a bottle if you are doubling the distance you can pedal.  It does not come with fenders so you will have to get some aftermarket ones if you live in a wetter climate.

trek dual sport plus electric bike

The Trek dual sport + 2 is great for someone who is looking to get a nicely priced electric bike for their commute to work,or just leisurely rides around town. Add a rear rack to it and it would be a great grocery getter. Adding the torque sensor to this rear hub motor bike keeps the price point down compared to a mid drive electric bike and gives it a really nice natural pedal assist feel and you’ll get a bit of a work out doing so.

I agree a small lady screen be nice to tell speed & mileage.

' src=

Is there a rider weight limit?

' src=

There is a combined weight of bicycle, rider and cargo limit of 300 pounds for this bike.

' src=

While I can see this technology as advancing cycling, it’s too damn expensive. But, consumers has been convinced to believe that they need it. Pedal on America, pedal on.

' src=

“Analog bike” is a silly term. No bicycle is an analogy of anything. “Manual”, “unassisted”, or “conventional” are all better terms for non-motorized bicycles.

' src=

Ha, thanks. I guess we get lost in guitar world a bit too much.

' src=

There is a free trek app which shows speed, range, has GPS with bike trail defaults, etc. Works well. The bike also has a walking assist feature so it’ll creep along when you want to walk with it.

' src=

I have a Garmin 1030 GPS device that I use on all my bikes, it gives lots of info including speed, distance, grade, etc. It can be mounted on the handle bar or using a stem mount from Amazon for ~ 15 bucks.

Good info! Thanks for sharing, not everyone has a computer like that, but yes, you definitely could get a computer for a bike without one.

' src=

Is there a way to increase my speed? A friend of mine has chipped his cube and is much faster now

' src=

I agree with Michael A, it is pricey. And, its capabilities are wildly overstated. I just purchased a Dual Sport + 2, have put 300+ miles on it and I’m sorry I bought it. Its Achilles heel is actually its main feature, i.e., the electric motor. Peddle Assist level 1 works, on average, of 20 minutes before the motor shuts down and the handlebar mounted controller (HMI) goes into error mode (3 flashing red lights). In level 2, it shuts down after about 10 minutes and in level, about 3 minutes or less. I live in a hilly area and my rides are punctuated with this motor giving up and leaving me on the side of the road waiting for the motor to reset. I contacted both Trek and Hyena (who makes the motor, controller and battery) and they seemed clueless as to why the motor stopped working (and they’re supposed to be the experts). A rep at Trek actually said, “I’m guessing that you’re peddling too hard.” After numerous back and forth email exchanges, both Trek and Hyena threw in the towel and directed me back to the dealer who sold it to me. After a long discussion with the dealer, they commented that the Trek Dual Sport + 2 with its 250 watt battery and 40nm motor isn’t capable of tackling hills and is only suitable for errands around town on flat or mildly elevated terrain. So, much like EV passenger vehicles whose range is inflated to increase sales, this Trek Dual Sport + 2’s capability is also exaggerated by its manufacturer and also by those being paid to write glowing articles on its performance.

' src=

I use your dual sport +2 primarily on the American River Trail (Historic Folsom to Discovery Park, Sacramento). It makes the 26 mile trip with battery power remaining. I installed a dropper seat post so that I could lower the seat as I came to a stop and put my feet on the ground. The control cable fits inside the frame tubes, but is a tight fit and takes time and patience to do. The gearing is too high for me, so I installed a 32 teeth chain ring. The rigid front fork really takes a hit when rolling over the tree roots which make “speed bumps” on the asphalt, so I installed a Rockshox ParagonSL suspension fork (100mm travel). I had to use a steerer tube extender in order to attach the handlebar stem. The suspension fork raised the front end up too high, so I installed a 24 inch front wheel. The bike is finally “perfect” for me. I smile a lot when riding the bike, At age 90 I am greatful for every day I am alive.

' src=

Well done Russ, Sounds like you have created the ideal commuter for you. Cycling has been a saviour for my fitness and longevity also – very blessed to have got into cycling when I was young, and now have chalked up 50 years of riding and still love it. All the best of health and happiness to you.

' src=

The torque sensor can adapt to your pedaling effort, providing just the right amount of electric assistance, making your ride smoother and more enjoyable. It’s a smart technology that enhances the synergy between the rider and the motor, ensuring a more natural and intuitive feel.

Dual Sport+ FAQs

Q: What is the difference between the FX+ and Dual Sport+? A: Dual Sport+ shares a frame, Hyenas e-system, and Active geometry positioning with FX+ but has a different ride feel and use case. While FX+ is designed for on-road/paved path riding, Dual Sport+ has 27.5 wheels and tires for more traction and control when riding off-path and on crushed gravel. FX+ also comes equipped with a rear rack and fenders for commuting right out of the box.

Q: What is the difference between the Dual Sport+ and Verve+1 LT? A: Both bikes utilize a Hyena e-system but differ in ride feel. Dual Sport+ utilizes our active position geometry which puts you more forward on the bike and your weight over the center of the bike. Verve+1 LT utilizes our upright geometry which keeps you in am upright, comfortable position that keeps you feeling fresh on long rides. The Verve+1 LT also comes equipped with a rear rack and fenders.

Q: What are the trade offs when you buy a lightweight ebike like Dual Sport+? A: Lightweight ebikes need to do a few things to reduce weight. They use smaller drive units typically that generate less torque and smaller batteries to help reduce weight as well. That means these lightweight ebikes typically have less range and power than a heavier ebike like our Allant+.

Q: Should I choose a mid-drive or hub drive ebike? A: Depending on your priorities, either option could work well for you. The ride quality of each will be different depending with mid-drive feeling closer to a natural bike riding feel with the motor centered on the crank. The hub systems offer light weight and lower cost typically as well while still providing an powerful e-assist. There are a lot of differences between each type and each brand has unique features as well. If you want to dive in and learn even more about all the e-systems we offer and the difference between each read our New to Ebikes guide.

The Dual Sport+ is an electrified version of the classic Dual Sport bicycle from Trek, one of the world’s largest bike manufacturers. It’s a model that leans towards efficiency, lightweight design, and quiet operation vs. high torque and raw power that many competing trail and mountain models target. To me, this compromise is a welcome one. Weighing in at just 43 lbs vs. the 50+ that so many other competing products hit, it’s an ebike that feels nimble to ride and is easy to lift up stairs or onto bike racks. Even riding unpowered, the bike feels capable and enjoyable, it coasts efficiently and has a wide enough gear range to manage hills without difficulty. The Dual Sport+ doesn’t come with fenders or a rack stock but it does have mounting provisions in place to add them later on… It even has bottle cage bosses on the seat tube! a feature that so many e-bikes lack due to frame geometry and battery placement compromises. For $3k, you get Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, a 10-speed Shimano Deore XT drivetrain, and the Shimano STePs drive system all warrantied for two years. The frame comes in four sizes, ensuring a better fit for most riders, but if you’re petite or struggle with taller high-step diamond frames, Trek offers a sister model called the Neko+ with a sloping top tube that’s about five inches lower. Both frames are diamond shaped vs. wave because of the strength it provides which is important for off-road riding. You’ll forego the bottle cages bosses and end up with a sparkly black paint job on the Neko+ vs. the matte black on the Dual Sport+, but it’s a great option to have, and not overly feminine. Most of the components are otherwise the same between the two models. I met a Trek rep named Stephanie Jones in Colorado for this review and she excitedly referred to the Dual Sport+ as a “Colorado commuter” because it works great on paved and packed Earth alike. I guess that’s part of the naming direction as well. It’s not overbuilt like a true mountain bike, but the hybrid knobby tires and 63 mm suspension fork make it capable as a weekend fun bike or a “scenic route” commuting platform. For me, the relative light weight and removable battery and display panel combined with quick release wheels make it a great “everything” bike. As someone who only has enough space and money for one electric bike but enjoys a variety of bike riding activities, it seemed like a great option.

Driving the Dual Sport Plus is an efficient Shimano STePs 250 watt mid-drive motor. It’s compact, relatively quiet, and very durable according to some of the shops I’ve chatted with over the past year. I mentioned that many of the hardware components on this bike come from Shimano, and it might even be a brand you’ve heard of before because they have been designing shifter systems for many years. The STePs motor doesn’t offer as much torque as some of the Yamaha, Brose, or Bosch centerdrives, but I believe it doesn’t use energy as quickly on average or weigh as much. Putting out up to 50 Newton meters of torque, the motor relies on a combination of signals from the controller. It listens to rear wheel speed, pedal cadence, and pedal torque as you spin along. This creates a natural feeling with smooth acceleration that is predictable. It also allows for smoother shifting if you ease off a bit from pressing down on the pedals as you change gears, and this helps to extend the life of the drivetrain (chain, sprockets, and derailleur). The chainring is standard sized and has a plastic guide sandwiching the chain, keeping it on track if you encounter bumpy terrain. The Shimano derailleur has a Shadow Plus clutch mechanism (a little grey lever) that tightens the chain to further reduce the chance of a drop and keep it quiet. During more relaxed smooth rides, you can push this lever into the forward-down position for easier shifting.

Powering the bike is a 36 volt downtube mounted battery pack with Lithium-ion cells. It’s compact, relatively lightweight, and fairly easy to carry because the curved top edge has a recessed area for your hand. I’d call it average in terms of capacity, but the energy is spent efficiently by the mid-motor and if you shift thoughtfully (lower gears for climbing and higher gears for reaching and maintaining the 20 mph top assisted speed) it will offer great range. I love that the battery clicks in from the left side vs. down from the top like most other packs because this reduces the chances of bumping the battery case into the top tube of the frame. It also allows the top tube to be closer to the battery which allows it to be mounted further towards the head tube and make room for those bottle cage bosses. The battery mount is connected to a flattened section of the downtube which was custom designed to keep it lower and nicer looking, blending in with the design of the bike vs. being connected to a standard round tube. You can charge the battery on or off the bike, but one of my gripes is that you need a little adapter piece to do so because the plug design is different on the battery mount vs. the battery itself. If you lose the adapter plug piece, you will only be able to charge the pack when mounted to the bike. In my opinion, the charger is also a bit large and bulky which makes it less fun to lug around.

Operating the Dual Sport+ is a cinch. Once the battery is charged and mounted (and the display is clicked into place) you can press the power button on the battery or hold the black button on the control pad to get it booted up. The display has three menu layouts that provide more or less information but they all show your speed and battery level. I love that the battery indicator shows percentage in one of the readout views vs. just an infographic with five bars. It’s easy to navigate through, but not overwhelming. Shimano has offered two display panels in recent years and this is the larger transflective version. It looks great in bright direct light and is backlit for use in dim conditions as well. With just three buttons to work with, it’s intuitive and easy to use, even without looking down, but offers a surprisingly deep settings area. If you hold the up and down arrows, the settings menu comes up allowing you to change the units, invert the bright and dark areas (which is handy for dim conditions, so the display won’t be so bright), and even turn off the electronic beep that sounds ever time you click the arrow buttons. This is a huge deal for me, the beeping noise can get pretty annoying after a while. The only thing the display does not offer is a USB charging port for your portable electronics. This is a feature that some of the cheaper bikes are offering standard and it can be a great way to use a phone for GPS or just keep your MP3 player filled on a longer ride. All in all, the display panel and button pad work well, are easy to read and reach while riding, and are a big step up from the older square panel in my opinion.

Trek now offers a range of electric bikes but the Dual Sport+ and Neko+ are two of my favorites. I’m not a huge guy and I enjoy pedaling along… but my knee can get sensitive over time and it’s nice to have help climbing trails or just arriving to work without sweating. Being able to lift this bike up stairs, ride across easy dirt paths, and take the battery pack off and into work for a fillup is just right. Yeah, I wish the charger had a leash for the adapter plug (or didn’t require an adapter at all), and yeah I’d love a USB charging port somewhere like Bosch has on their Intuvia display. But I love how open the settings are, it’s a huge deal that the bike comes in so many sizes, and I prefer to buy in person from dealers when possible so Trek (being one of the bigger brands) can offer that. Ebikes are a bit more complex and expensive than regular bikes, so having someone fit you properly and being able to get help or replacement parts in a year or two down the line shouldn’t be overlooked. This is not the most affordable electric bicycle, nor is it feature complete with integrated lights, fenders, or a rack stock, but you can add those things if you need them. The disc brakes work well enough for urban and light trail riding and the hydraulic setup just feels better and is more adjustable than mechanical. Even the larger 700c tires are a nice touch, they roll smoothly and offer better efficiency than 26” but the knobby tires make them trail worthy. By the way, I was test riding the 20″ frame for this review and noticed that on all of the models, the handlebar was a bit shorter than a mountain bike (less wide) which is a nice touch for squeezing through traffic and office doors. I liked the ergonomic grips and riser bar, it felt a bit more upright and comfortable than a lot of the true trail bikes and for me, that was a good thing. Big thanks to Trek for partnering with me on this review and sending Stephanie out to meet me with several bikes to compare back to back. We had a good time and I think I agree that this would make a good Colorado commuting platform :P

  • This is one of the lightest weight electric bikes I have ever reviewed, it’s a cross between an urban commuter and mountain bike capable of light trail riding, so you could cut across dirt paths in the city and maintain traction and comfort
  • Removable display panel and battery can be stored inside if you have to park at a bike rack or leave it outside in the rain/snow and even the wheels have quick release for easy trail maintenance or sticking the bike into the trunk of a car for a weekend getaway
  • Purpose-built frame flattens out a bit at the downtube to make the battery look nicer and sit lower, notice that most of the wires and cables are integrated to keep it looking clean and to reduce snags
  • Available in four frame sizes so you can optimize fit, the Dual Sport+ only comes in high-step but is actually a companion bike to the Neko+ which has a sloping top tube, diamond frames tend to be more stiff and sturdy, are easier to lift, and hang off of many car and bus racks better by using that flat top tube
  • There are plenty of provisions for adding a rear rack, fenders, and even a bottle cage at the seat tube which many other e-bikes aren’t able to squeeze in
  • Hydraulic disc brakes provide smooth stopping power without as much hand and finger effort, they tend to stay cleaner if you do ride through mud or dusty terrain, and the brake levers are adjustable so you can bring the reach in if you have small hands or are wearing gloves
  • The 10-speed Shimano Deore drivetrain is great, it’s a mid-level part that is several steps up from base and not only provides great range for climbing and going fast but allows for multi-shifting and has a one-way clutch to keep the chain tight (just click the little grey lever into the up position to reduce chain bounce on rough terrain), this drivetrain should hold up well between tuneups and is probably overkill for urban riding
  • The bike coasts efficiently and feels smooth over small cracks and bumps because of the larger wheel diameter (lowering the attack angle of the tires) and also because of the rubber knobs on the tires
  • I really appreciate the thick ergonomic grips, comfortable Bontrager Nebula H1 saddle, and 63 mm travel suspension fork with compression adjust and lockout! The blue lever locks the fork out which could reduce bobbing and dive on smooth terrain or for heavier riders
  • Trek is one of the biggest bicycle manufacturers in the world and they have a vast network of dealers who can let you test ride, help you get fitted, and provide warranty and maintenance service
  • The chainring is sandwiched between two plastic discs that help to keep it on track when riding across bumpy terrain and also help your pant leg to not rub or get greasy, it’s a great setup for a trail-worthy ebike like this
  • I’ve become a big fan of the Shimano STePs display + button pad system, the LCD panel is transflective so it looks great in bright daylight conditions and has some adjustability of settings if you hold the up and down arrow buttons for a few seconds when it’s on, this allows you turn off the beeping noise, change the units, and even invert the display colors for night riding, I also like that the readout shows battery percentage vs. just a five-bar infographic like many others
  • Battery and motor weight are well positioned, low and center across the frame, and I love how efficient and responsive the motor is, this electric bike handles well and doesn’t surprise you with jerky acceleration, it actually measures how hard you are pedaling and tries to match it smoothly which has the added benefit of reducing drivetrain wear when you shift… if you just ease off a bit on pedaling as you shift
  • Minor consideration here, the disc brakes are average sized with 160 mm rotors vs. 180 at the front, they might not cool as efficiently or provide the stopping power for true mountain biking or long steep descents (especially with the wider 700c wheels), but they are good for urban and light trail riding
  • I’m a big fan of rear-mounted kickstands because they stay out of the way of your crank arms, but this one is also placed strategically to support the weight of a rack and cargo if you add it post-purchase, my gripe is that it does not allow for length adjustment and seemed kind of short during my review, the bike tipped pretty far to the left side
  • As great as the knobby tires and suspension fork are, they are still a compromise towards reduced weight and ride efficiency vs. full comfort… so I’d consider swapping the seat post with a 27.2 mm adjustable Bodyfloat or Suntour NCX suspension post, just keep in mind that these products will raise the minimum saddle height by a few inches which could make the seating position too high for some riders
  • In recent years, Shimano has updated their battery design to allow for on and off-bike charging, but this particular pack requires a special adapter to do so. If you lose the adapter dongle (which is easy to do because it doesn’t have a connector leash to the main charger cord) you could be out of luck for off-bike charging or have to buy a replacement, it’s just bulky and less convenient than if there was only one charging port plug type

Stephen bookout.

The Trek Dual Sport electric bike sounds like best choice for me but have not been able to find a Trek Dealer who has one in stock, or willing to order one, without me purchasing ahead of time. Any ideas on how to find a Trek dealer who might have one available for me to test ride? Or, be able to contact Trek direct for help?

Enjoy your reviews. Good information. Thanks. Steve

I’m looking at a used version of this bike for commuting. I’m 6’1″ and 200lbs, my commute is 26k round trip with the way to work being flat or downhill and the way home mostly uphill (approx. 650ft elevation gain). Do you think the 50NM torque motor will be enough or should I hold out for something more powerful given my height and weight?

Andy Berger

Any reason not to buy this bike? New (old stock) one availablefor $1999 at my local trek store.

Hi Andy! In my opinion, Trek is a leader in the ebike space and makes reliable products. Their stores provide great customer support, maintenance, and fitting. The Dual Sport is using a proven Shimano mid-drive, and while it’s not the most powerful… it is quiet, efficient, and reliable. I’d feel comfortable going for this if the bike fit well and the price was a good fit :)

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Review

Are you searching for a high-quality electric bike that will last you for years to come? Look no further than the newest addition to the Trek Dual Sport+ lineup: the 2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2.

Electric bikes have become quite popular in recent years.

The convenience and added benefits of an electric assist make navigating your commute not just easier, but more enjoyable as well.

With all of the available options, it can be hard to sort through them all and know which one is right for you.

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Review

We’ve put together this comprehensive review of the 2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 to help make your decision easier.

In our review, we’ll discuss its features such as range and battery life, overall performance, comfortability, customization options and much more.

Let’s dive into our review of this top-of-the-line e-bike!

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 is the perfect bike for those who want to take on both dirt trails and city streets.

It has high-quality 27.5 wheels and tires, and reliable components. Let’s check out what makes this two-wheeled monster so special.

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Review

Frame & Design

The Dual Sport+ 2 features an aluminum frame and fork. This gives it great rolling power on smooth trails while also keeping it agile when cornering in tight turns off-road or at slower speed on pavement.

It has a confidence-inspiring geometry that helps you feel comfortable no matter what terrain you’re riding on, whether it be dirt or asphalt.

The frame also features full internal cable routing, providing clean aesthetics without compromising performance or weight savings.

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Review

The major highlight of the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 is its Shimano 1×9 Altus groupset with a wide range of gears for tackling any hill or velocity required on your ride.

The lightweight and powerful HyDrive 40Nm rear hub offers plenty of torque when climbing big hills and enough range to handle those fast descents off-road as well as blasting through slick city streets at warp speeds.

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Review

Rolling power comes courtesy of 27.5×2 Bontrager GR0 Expert tires with full tread pattern swiveling over every terrain from hard pack to mud over roots.

Tubeless ready rims take up less rotational weight which helps quicken up the wheel for an improved ride experience in all conditions and climates – wet roads, dry dirt, etc..

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Review

Powerful braking is provided thanks to a pair of Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes with 160mm rotors for almost unrivaled levels of stopping power in any situation you may find yourself in out there!

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Review

While it does come with loads of features from top tier components, the price tag isn’t outrageous either – currently $2,399 USD MSRP as shown here.

Quite reasonable considering what you get here – especially when compared with some other bikes out there that cost twice as much even though they don’t have half the ride quality!

Finally, all Trek products come backed by their lifetime warranty so if anything goes wrong; they always honor their promise to take care of any issue promptly no matter how small!

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Review

Motor and Battery

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 is equipped with a HyDrive motor and 250Wh battery.

This combination provides plenty of power to tackle any terrain you may encounter while also offering up to 35 miles of range on a single charge.

The motor is capable of providing up to 40Nm of torque, allowing you to accelerate quickly and climb hills with ease.

2023 Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Review

Overall Thoughts

If you’re looking for an all purpose mountain bike capable of taking on just about any type of terrain imaginable then look no further than the Trek Dual Sport+ 2!

Equipped with quality Bontrager tires & rims, a respectable Altus groupset , ultra responsive Shimano disc brake system; this machine will rightfully leave you grinning from ear to ear after each satisfying outing whether that be hitting technical singletrack downhills or just cruising through town without breaking a sweat!

Trek Dual Sport+ 2

  • Price: $2,399
  • Frame: Aluminum
  • Wheels: 650x50c
  • Battery: 250Wh
  • Powertrain: 1 x 9

What we like about it: a powerful and lighter hybrid e-bike, designed for urban commuting as well as outdoor adventures.

What we didn’t like about it: The inability to do pro-level track adventure preparation and the vulnerability of mountain riding.

Rating: (4.7/5)

Trek-Dual-Sport-2-Stagger

With the popularity of hybrids, this more powerful technology is making more and more people fall in love with cycling. The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Stagger, as an inclusive bigger e-bike, is built specifically for those who want more.

If you want: more distance, more style, and more fun, then the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 is the right choice for you.

Lighter in weight and easier to handle, if you’re tired of the sameness of a traditional bike, try adding more technology. There’s no need to worry about sudden battery drain states, and the pedal assist system provides a more natural riding feel to make your commute smarter and keep better track of your time.

It’s also a good medium to long-distance tourer, loaded with more for more needs.

Road Performance

Trek Dual Sport+ 2

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 is a hybrid bike that will thrill you on every ride. If you are like me, you ride a lot on city roads, find it hard to tolerate car traffic, and prefer to be noticed. The Shimano Altus M2010 1×9 combo G2 hub drive motor will give you an inexhaustible supply of power.

In addition, the Bontrager GR0 Expert 650x50c wheels give you more grip and you won’t have to worry about sacrificing handling due to the increased speed. You’ll save at least a few extra hours of riding time each day. They are also more friendly for longer rides and will reduce the discomfort of sweating on hot summer days, maximizing the riding experience.

Downtown Center Test

To be more critical, we chose to test the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 in the heart of the city, passing through crowds, on pavements, and on slippery paths in parks and along berms.

For crowded crowds and fast pavement, the crossing is a test of the bike’s braking and wheelset drive. As soon as I started driving this spacious but not at all bulky technological newcomer, I felt a force of confidence. The rigid wheels and wide tires add flat comfort and confidence to the shock fork without adding weight.

It’s important to maintain an even ride and strong handling. The reliable 9-speed Shimano drivetrain keeps things moving efficiently, and with the Shimano hydraulic disc, I don’t worry about losing control even when I’m riding on slippery trails and taking sharp turns.

As I crossed the embankment by the river, I encountered sections of obstacles at shorter intervals. If it were a conventional city road bike ride, I think I would get bored quickly. Because it’s hybrid electric, I don’t feel like it takes more of my mind to handle the bike and I can concentrate more on the sunset.

General Riding

Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Hex Blue

I have always wanted to be able to do a longer ride with my father outdoors. It’s a bit difficult for traditional cycling, after all, people of my father’s age will face the regret of not being able to physically keep up. Although I think cycling is a very good sport.

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 fulfilled my wish. On a short camping trip that I had planned in advance, we drove this versatile bike. We were on a relatively flat section of road with a small uphill section, and I thought the 9-speed Shimano drivetrain and G2 hub drive motor would easily help me get around.

Support for rear rack mounting allowed us to take enough luggage packages with us, and with up to 20mph and a 250Wh battery, we were able to travel 35 miles per charge. It’s fast enough to give us the feeling of a windy ride we haven’t had in a long time.

My father’s first glance at it and his comment to him was that it hid the wiring and looked as fast as it felt. It’s a bit blunt, but it’s true, I don’t want critical wiring being yanked around while riding, greatly affecting my focus on the ride.

Just as the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 illustrates, the Alpha Gold Aluminum high-end aluminum body is made to be upgraded in terms of weight. In the outdoors, this alloy is more resistant to friction and UV rays.

I think if you’re like me and enjoy camping, breathing in the mountain air, and watching the stars, it’s easy to pack your bags and take the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 for a low-carbon green ride.

Key features

Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Frame

The loose aerodynamic geometry of the frame allows for an extra free speed advantage, light, and swift. The body supports adaptable mudguards, which are friendly when commuting after rain in the city. Also if you like the outdoors, you can reduce mud worries. If you’re someone who needs to pack a lot of stuff to get around, the rear rack can be a great way to reduce the tangle you have with traditional riding, with both speed and weight bearing.

I’m an adventurous young man who likes to camp and used to worry about the limitations of my view when traveling at night, ever since I discovered that the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 easily adapts to the lights, I’ve abandoned my car for a more friendly ride. Why not? I mean, be able to go low carbon and still loads more and save energy, even without dragging behind in speed. I think I fell into a deep relationship with the Trek Dual Sport+ 2.

The stiff Bontrager GR0 Expert wheels and the wide 650x50c tires give you confidence on varied terrain. Whether it’s a city bike path or some gravel trails outdoors, or even wet, slippery trails, they grind and grip the ground well and you can feel the traction of the bodywork very well.

The steep 73.0° seat tube angle gives me a more upright riding position and allows for more relaxed muscles, which is an unbeatable benefit for newbies. Also, as I mentioned earlier, it is very friendly for older people.

If you know professional racing models, that near-parallel angle to the ground is more suited to short sprints, unlike the freedom and comfort of a road bike.

Because of the increase in speed, the 70.5° head tube angle allows it to be rock-solid at high speeds and speed descents in the face of some sudden downhill terrain, and I wouldn’t worry about the diminished safety that comes with the added technology.

Components and Specifications

G2 hub drive motor.

Trek Dual Sport+ 2 has G2 Hub Drive Motor

Trek Dual Sport+ 2 with proprietary pedal assist system with G2 hub drive motor (250W, 40Nm), which is mounted on the rear wheel for greater stability and reliability. At the same time, the more stable linear drive and lighter weight ensure a smoother launch and reduced transmission losses, allowing you to achieve an efficient ride.

Thanks to the G2 hub drive motor, maintaining higher and smoother speeds is a breeze. You can guarantee enough movement and not exhaustion like on a conventional bike.

It is also effective in reducing the turning radius and making your steering more responsive in some bends. This is very friendly for and in most situations where you need to navigate the pavements in the city.

250Wh Battery

As cycling becomes more and more popular, I think the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 with 250Wh Battery is a quick way to get the hobby going whenever you’re new to cycling and not very experienced, and you won’t get muscle discomfort from riding long distances. If you keep a relatively constant speed, the 250Wh Battery can travel up to 35 miles per charge.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the body kit with battery-powered integrated lights, which means that the battery not only gives you an electric boost, but also provides safety when driving at night.

Furthermore, the 250Wh Battery doesn’t add too much to the weight of the car. It doesn’t carry as much weight as a pure electric bike, and the overall body weight is kept at 17.3 kg, which is not much more than most conventional road bikes.

Shimano Hydraulic Disc

Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Brake

When it comes to braking, some people worry that too much speed brings a pleasant riding experience but also a correspondingly higher risk factor. With the Trek Dual Sport+ 2, you don’t need to worry about that. The Shimano hydraulic disc, a major brand, is far more agile with more efficient braking.

The hydraulic disc brakes are also easier to maintain. With the hybrid Trek Dual Sport+ 2, higher riding speeds can be more taxing on the performance of the braking system than with a conventional bike. If you don’t have a more professional brake system, it can be a great test for long endurance rides as well as outdoor rides.

Shimano Altus M2010 1×9

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 offers a total of 9 gear ranges, which would be slightly less than the 20 or more options available on a conventional bike. Thanks to the electric assist, you can keep the gears as high as you want them to be.

If you want to work on your riding, even for beginners who are not capable themselves, you can gradually reduce the amount of assistance as time goes on.

The Shimano Altus M2010 1×9 maintains a smooth texture when shifting without giving you a stutter. This performance, which is only possible with a quality transmission, also reduces the feeling of chain wobble.

It also performs better than conventional bikes when climbing and descending outdoors if you need to load up some loads for climbing, and the superior power transmission doesn’t feel strained.

Previous Versions of Trek Dual Sport+ 2

2019 Trek Dual Sport+

Back in 2019, Trek launched the Dual Sport+ version, and in comparison, the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 is more friendly in price and has some upgrades to the performance of the motor. Although the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 will be slightly less impressive in terms of battery capacity, the more massive battery means a sacrifice in weight.

The 2019 Trek Dual Sport+ can really be a behemoth, weighing in at 20.6kg. If you’re a conventional cyclist, it may be a struggle to achieve adaptation when faced with a hybrid bike of this weight.

In addition, the taller tires of the 700x38c will be weaker on some nimble steering. However, this will be more friendly for ground grinding as well as gripping, and you may not cause major drifts on some of the steeper downhill sections.

In terms of drivetrain, the 2019 Trek Dual Sport+ is powered by a Shimano HG50 1×10. Despite having a higher range of options, I found it a very taxing act for some of the more difficult climbs in the face of the heavier bodywork weighing it down.

Of course, the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 is available in two models in its latest version. One of them is the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 Stagger for smaller riders, a thoughtful gesture that more riders will enjoy.

All things considered, I would recommend the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 if you need a hybrid bike that performs more consistently, handles more easily, and is more agile.

What do we like about it?

  • A more versatile hybrid bike that enables flexible transitions between commuting and the outdoors.
  • The lighter mass gives you more stable handling, while not straining on the climbs.
  • The aluminum body is more adapted to the rough environment and able to reduce maintenance time.
  • G2 hub drive motor for efficient dynamics and reduced physical energy loss.
  • Easy adaptation of fenders and rear racks for more loading possibilities.
  • Nimble 650x50c wheels that roll faster without losing grip.

What don’t we like about it?

  • Terrain adaptability inferior to professional mountain bikes
  • Not too much choice of colors.
  • What is the body weight of the Trek Dual Sport+ 2?

The M model of the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 is 17.28 kg / 38.1 lbs.

  • What is the motor of the Trek Dual Sport+ 2?

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 motor is a G2 hub drive motor.

  • What is the battery capacity of the Trek Dual Sport+ 2?

Trek Dual Sport+ 2 has a battery capacity of 250Wh.

  • What is the Trek Dual Sport+ 2 drivetrain?

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 drivetrain is the Shimano Altus M2010 1×9.

  • What are the tire sizes of the Trek Dual Sport+ 2?

The Trek Dual Sport+ 2 tire size is 650x50c.

Accessories

Comparison table, schwinn coston dx 27.5 electric bike vs trek dual sport+ 2.

Schwinn Coston DX 27.5 Electric Bike

In the face of an upgraded hybrid, it would be highly undesirable to simply add the boost of electricity and weaken the performance of other components. The Schwinn Coston DX 27.5 Electric Bike is comparable in price to the Trek Dual Sport+ and opts for a JAK 7 mechanical disc for braking.

Faced with the pressure of today’s more efficient and responsive liquid discs, for the demands of high-speed riding, I think mechanical discs may be easier to maintain, but still slightly less powerful in terms of braking power.

In addition, the drivetrain is a 1×7 drivetrain, which will limit some speed options. In terms of weight, the Schwinn Coston DX has a heavier weight, which I have to say will be more stable for some descents and will reduce drift on some smooth roads, but in terms of speed gains and climbing effectiveness, the lighter mass of the Trek Dual Sport+ will have a better advantage.

More than anything else, I think the Trek Dual Sport+ is no slouch for ground grip due to its wide tire size, making up for the reduced weight for ground-hugging.

Surface 604 Twist vs Trek Dual Sport+ 2

2022 Surface 604 Twist

When I saw the Surface 604 Twist, I was surprised at how small and fast it was. In terms of battery components, it takes a more expensive lithium-ion battery, while not being more expensive in terms of price because of the volume control.

For riding position, the Surface 604 Twist has a higher head tube to seat tube drop height, compared to the gentler drop of the Trek Dual Sport+ which is more friendly for the riding position.

The Surface 604 Twist is powered by the SRAM X5 Triggers 1×9 drivetrain and also has the more agile Tektro Auriga hydraulic discs for braking. In terms of a well-rounded ride, if you’re in need of a commuter or outdoor riding needs, and it’s essential to carry a few essentials, then a compact model may not be what you need.

Although there’s no denying that riding the Surface 604 Twist will be a lot of fun.

Cannondale Quick Neo SL 2 Remixte vs Trek Dual Sport+ 2

2022 Cannondale Quick Neo SL 2 Remixte

Hybrid EV buyers who have done serious research and have an active interest in buying will certainly notice the Cannondale Quick Neo SL 2 Remixte model at the same time. In terms of price, it will present a much higher status. In terms of key features, such as motor and battery power, the Mahle bike motion X35 250W is used, and the same single-disc 1×9 drivetrain is used for the range of powertrains.

But when faced with the choice of wheels, there are different answers. With the taller 700 x 38c tires, this means a greater rolling speed at the speed of the ride.

For difficult terrains, such as high climbs and sharp descents, more control is required and there is an increased risk of drifting.

Secondly, for some nimble urban commuting terrain, I think the Trek Dual Sport+’s 650x50c tires are more suited to shuttling. If you’re an experienced rider, then it won’t affect your riding much.

If you are a novice rider, then extra care needs to be taken. But don’t worry too much, the Cannondale Quick Neo SL uses the same responsive Shimano MT201 hydraulic disc brakes.

Kona Dew-E vs Trek Dual Sport+ 2

2022 Kona Dew-E

If you are a city dweller who needs more commuting routes, and if the 250Wh battery doesn’t suit you well, then you could try a hybrid electric vehicle with a larger battery capacity, such as the Kona Dew-E. For the Kona Dew-E with its 504Wh, the increased battery capacity means an increase in weight for the body capacity and an increase in price.

For descending terrain or climbing stability, the heavier body will help, but there will be a drag on speed, which is indisputable.

In addition, there is not much difference in some key features. For example, the 1×9 drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes.

Different tire options. Kona Dew-E prefers a wider size: 650x47c, which is a considerable help for stability in urban commuting. It is also there to help you reduce drift if you are faced with some slippery surfaces, such as riding after rain.

Also equipped with some essential tools for the free fit of the bodywork. For example the fenders and the rear rack. For urban commuting, this is an essential detail.

Electric Motorcycles

Can-am surprises with launch of naked and dual-sport electric motorcycles.

Avatar for Micah Toll

It’s a big day for BRP and its motorcycle brand, Can-Am. The launch of its first two electric motorcycles, the Can-Am Pulse and Origin, marks a return to grace for the legacy motorcycle maker that once dominated the tracks.

It’s been a while since we heard anything from Can-Am on the electric motorcycle front. But never fear, it doesn’t appear that Can-Am is going the way of Damon Motorcycles or other seemingly vaporware brands. Instead, Can-Am sounds like it is making good on its electric motorcycle promises dating back to early 2022.

That’s right, it was two and a half years ago when the brand first gave us hints at its electric future, claiming to relaunch with a pair of electric motorcycles. With one model set for the street and the other for the peat, it looked like Can-Am was targeting a wide swath of riders for both on and off-road fun.

Fast forward to August of 2022 and we got our first look at the designs in an early preview, though devoid of much substance. The upcoming Can-Am Pulse and Origin were said to offer different styles of riding despite sharing the same Rotex E-Power drivetrain.

Now, the company is hoping to follow through on those early teasers and design unveilings, finally giving us the details we’ve been waiting for with launch of pre-orders for both models.

“Today, we are reclaiming our two-wheel heritage by bringing new excitement to the electric motorcycle industry,” said José Boisjoli, President and CEO of BRP. “50 years ago, Can-Am celebrated many victories with its Track ‘n Trail motorcycles, and we are bringing that pedigree back with a focus on modern electric power, connectivity and thrill. We intend to become a global leader in that space with true innovation designed to simplify the riding experience for new riders and introduce electric motorcycles to all.”

It looks like the pair of bikes will roll out with 8.9 kWh battery packs, putting them on the lower end of battery capacities these days. Those battery packs offer an estimated city range of 100 miles (160 km) or 90 miles (145 km) for the Pulse and Origin, respectively. The batteries fall just below the capacity of models offered by LiveWire, such as the Del Mar and Mulholland, but above Zero Motorcycles’ entry-level electric rides.

The good news is that smaller batteries charge faster, with the company claiming a 20-80% charge time of just 50 minutes when using a Level 2 charger. For city jaunts, 90-100 miles is likely plenty for most riders. Just don’t expect to be cruising the highways for too long with a modest battery pack like this.

trek dual sport plus electric bike

The bikes also share a 47 hp (35 kW) electric motor, again putting them closer to Zero’s entry-level models in terms of power, and falling well behind other major industry players such as LiveWire and Energica. But with a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) of 3.8s and 4.3s for the street-ready Can-Am Pulse and dual sport Can-Am Origin, respectively, it sounds like both models take advantage of every single watt available to them. And with an enclosed chaincase powering that rear wheel, the bike is supposedly quieter than most other chain-driving electric motorcycles.

But perhaps what’s more interesting is where the bikes differ. The Pulse is a naked bike described as being “playful and well-balanced”, offering commuter-style riders a “cheat code for the city.” It features four different riding modes, a 1.7 liter glove box with built-in USB charging port, 17-inch Dunlop tires, and comes in a “compact size and height for better control in the city.” It also includes a huge 10.25-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay, allowing riders to navigate their route and stay connected to each ride with the BRP GO! App.

The bike is priced at US $13,999, unless you want the Pulse ’73 model with a few extra colorway and body accoutrements, plus fancy LED lights, for a grand total of US$ 15,999.

trek dual sport plus electric bike

Compared to the city-optimized Pulse, the Can-Am Origin is more of a dual sport that lets riders hit the trails on the weekend and then return to their two-wheel commute on Mondays.

The Origin comes with higher ground clearance and longer travel suspension, plus six riding modes. Riders give up a bit of storage with a smaller glovebox, but gain more freedom for off-road shenanigans as well as dual sport tires to help keep the rubber side down.

It costs just a bit more to get down and dirty, with the Origin starting at US $14,499 for the standard version or $16,499 for the Origin ’73 edition.

Pre-orders for Can-Am Pulse and Can-Am Origin are now available at select BRP dealerships in France, Germany, Spain, UK, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Austria, the United States, and Canada. Riders can visit a Can-Am motorcycle dealership and order the model of their choice, with production expected to begin in Q4 of 2024 and worldwide deliveries starting in early 2025.

How tall are you?

To measure your height, stand straight up, barefoot, with your back, heels, shoulders and head all touching a wall. While looking straight ahead, place a book or straight edge on your head and slowly push it against the wall. Your straight edge should be parallel with the floor. Mark the spot where the bottom of the book is touching the wall. The distance from the marked spot to the floor is your height.

What is your inseam?

How to measure: Stand barefoot with your back straight and against a wall. Tuck a ruler or something that extends to the floor between your legs. Using both hands, and keeping it level, pull the ruler up into your crotch as if you were sitting on the saddle. Measure the distance from the top edge of the ruler to the ground to find your inseam measurement. Your inseam is very important to your final bike size so please measure carefully.
