3. Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Flight: AeroTucan and AeroVega

small plane going from oaxaca to huatulco and oaxaca to puerto escondiod mexico

Wondering, Can you fly from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido? Yes, you can!

In fact, the Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flight is the most convenient and quickest option, but it’s also the most expensive option.

Two companies have flights from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido, AeroTucan  and  AeroVega , and each company has just one flight per day.

With both, you’ll take a 6-8 seater plane; if you’ve never been in a small plane before, watch this video to see if it seems comfortable.

From the airport, you can rent a car , book private transportation to your Puerto Escondido hotel, or take a taxi.

⚠️ Note: There’s no Uber in Oaxaca City, no Uber in Puerto Escondido, and no Uber in Oaxaca State anywhere. There’s also no Lyft in Oaxaca state.

✈️ AeroTucan Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Flight: My Personal experience

two woman on the oaxaca to puerto escondido flight on AeroTucan Airlines

I took the AeroTucan Oaxaca flight to Puerto Escondido, and really enjoyed it. However, this is a small plane, and it’s a lot shakier than a large airplane.

If you have claustrophobia, or don’t handle turbulence well, you might want to opt for the private driver or ADO bus.

🎟️ How do I buy tickets for Aerotucan?

  • AeroTucan phone number: 1-800-640-4148
  • AeroTucan local phone number: (+52) 951-502-0840
  • AeroTucan website: aerotaxisdemexico.com

If you want to take the Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flight with AeroTúcan, you have to book in advance via phone, the AeroTucan website, or at Oaxaca Airport.

Keep in mind you might not get an English-speaking agent via phone, so have a Spanish-speaking friend or acquaintance nearby to help.

You also have the option to buy directly at the airport, as the Oaxaca Airport is just a short cab ride from downtown Oaxaca City.

However, know there may or may not be an agent when you arrive, so the phone is usually a better option.

⚠️ Pro Tip: Buy your tickets in advance

If you want to take the AeroTucan Puerto Escondido flight, you’ll want to get your ticket as far in advance of your flight as possible.

As there’s usually just one daily flight from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido, you’ll want to make sure you can travel on your preferred day.

✈️ AeroTucan Flight schedule

schedule for the flight from oaxaca to puerto escondido mexico

Have a look at the image above for the AeroTucan Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flight schedule.

This has been their schedule for some time now, but they can change it at any time, so also double check the AeroTucan flight schedule online.

How much do tickets cost?

One way flights on AeroTúcan average about $3,000-3,500 pesos ($180-210 USD).

Yes, this is a lot more than most other options, but it’s also a lot more convenient as flights are only about 30-45 minutes, whereas the drive takes 3-4 hours.

Oaxaca Travel Tips: AeroTucan offers a  15% discount  on all Thursday flights.

🧳 Do you have luggage?

The final thing to keep in mind is luggage weight. You’re allowed  33 pounds (15 kg) on AeroTucan, which is about 20 pounds less than larger airlines allow.

My luggage was over, and I ended up with a surprise $50 USD fee. Other than that, I loved the flight and will take it again.

✈️ AeroVega Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Flight

AeroVega is owned and operated by the pilot, Juan Carlos Vega. Much like with AeroTucan, he operates a small plane with less than 10 seats.

If you’ve never been on a single-engine plane of this size, check out the YouTube video above of a real experience on this flight.

If it doesn’t seem like it’s for you, and you have the budget, consider hiring this driver and private car .

If you’re traveling with a group, splitting the private shuttle ends up costing less than the plane does.

You can also rent a car , or take the ADO bus to Puerto Escondido. With the new highway now open, the drive takes about 3-4 hours.

✈️ Flight cost & How to book your Aerovega flight

  • AeroVega phone number: (+44) 954-588-0062
  • AeroVega local phone number: (+52) 951-516-4982
  • AeroVega email: [email protected]
  • AeroVega Facebook Page

The flight costs about $2,000-$3,000 pesos ($120-180 USD), which you will pay in cash (pesos), and book directly with Juan Vega.

While this may seem unconventional, I’ve met people who have flown with AeroVega, and it is a legit company — though there’s no website.

AeroVega usually only offers one flight per day, so book as far in advance as you can by calling and/or emailing the Captain Juan Vega using his contact information above.

If you’re unable to reach him like I was, you can always book with AeroTucan like I did.

4. Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Bus (ADO)

red ado bus mexico

The ADO bus takes about 3-4 hours to get from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido on the new highway that opened in 2024 — but it used to take 10 hours!

There were daytime and overnight buses on this route, so you could sleep on the bus, but with the new highway open, they don’t do the overnight bus anymore.

The cost for a one way ticket is about $300-400 pesos ($50 USD) on the ADO bus, and $400-500 pesos on the ADO GL, which is their premium class bus.

The bus will drop you off at the ADO Puerto Escondido bus station (📍 map ), located about 10-20 minutes from the beaches.

There’s no Uber in Oaxaca State, but there are always plenty of taxis waiting outside of this bus terminal; just make sure to have pesos to pay them.

You can check the Puerto Escondido ADO schedule on their website , but know it’s not very user-friendly.

It glitches a lot and doesn’t take United States credit cards, so I always use GuateGo when I book my Mexico bus tickets.

🚌 OCC Bus from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido: Second Class Bus

people on a bus in mexico

Looking for other bus companies offering this route? While OCC is owned by ADO, the tickets are sometimes a bit cheaper, as I’ve heard OCC called a second class bus.

I’ve been on both ADO and OCC, and there isn’t that much difference, though I prefer taking ADO when I have the option.

As with the ADO bus, I suggest you book your tickets via GuateGo because the OCC website isn’t user-friendly.

5. Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Van (Colectivo)

colectivo van in oaxaca mexico

The passenger van from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Mexico, known as the colectivo or camioneta, is a shared van that seats 10-12 passengers.

Most companies in Oaxaca use Nissan Urvans or Dodge Sprinter vans on this trip. The vans themselves are comfortable enough, and well-maintained.

There are several companies, like Lineas Unidas , Transportes Villa del Pacifico and Service Express Arista , with offices located in downtown Oaxaca City .

A one-way ticket is about $200-300 pesos (about $12-18 USD), but do know the bus is MUCH more comfortable for only a few dollars more.

You can check prices and book your bus tickets via GuateGo , but you have to get your colectivo tickets in person.

The van from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido takes about 3-4 hours, the same as with the bus or driving a rental car.

🎟️ Pro Tip: Buy your tickets in advance

As the cheapest way to get from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido, van companies offer several trips daily, though do tend to be at full capacity.

You can buy your ticket in advance, or wait until the day of the trip; though there’s always a chance of the van selling out.

Oaxaca Travel Tips : For those prone to motion or carsickness, reserve the front seat so your journey time is more pleasant.

The transport options below are suitable for all budgets and group sizes. So, you should have no problem finding the perfect option for you and you’ll be on those Oaxaca coast beaches before you know it!

The Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido New Highway: an Endless saga!

The new highway across the Oaxacan mountains has been in the works for years. Literally.

When work first started, it was due to be completed by 2015. But, it was finally opened at the start of 2024 after countless construction and land dispute delays

The completion of the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla Highway is pivotal to increasing tourist numbers in Puerto Escondido and along the Oaxacan coast. The new road is 100 km in length and reduces driving time to just 2 to 3 hours.

Formed of 3 tunnels, 10 bridges and a viaduct, the road gives splendid views of the mountains. That’s without the inevitable travel sickness you currently have to deal with on the winding roads for 8 hours. Or 10+ hour night buses sat upright…

But it’s not without issues. Local companies are accusing ADO of running more services than agreed and there’s frequent protests blocking ADO services and causing last-minute bus cancellations. These protests generally last one-day at a time so shouldn’t hold your journey up too much.

Option 1: Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Bus

Taking the ADO bus to Puerto Escondido from Oaxaca City is the option that most balances budget and comfort.

You used to have to a 10-hour bus along a 500-km route as the buses were too large for the mountain route – but no more! Now, it takes just 3 hours – and the tickets are a third of the cost compared with what they were before.

TOP TIP: Sit on the right-hand side for the best views!

Services & Cost

There are 5 services each day, covering the morning, afternoon and evening.

  • ADO (first-class bus): departs 7.15 am, arrives 10.15 am
  • ADO (first-class bus): departs 9 am, arrives 12 midday
  • ADO gl (executive service bus): departs 11.45 am, arrives 2.45 pm
  • OCC (second-class bus): departs 4.15 pm, arrives 7.15 pm
  • ADO gl (executive class bus): departs 7.45 pm, arrives 10.45 pm

ADO gl are the nicest buses. The wide seats recline quite a lot and there’s lots of leg room. ADO and OCC buses are more than comfortable for the short journey, although ADO tends to have more comfortable seats and more legroom.

All bus services have toilets and under-bus storage for large luggage.

Tickets cost around 18 USD for ADO and OCC or 21 USD for ADO gl. Honestly, there’s not much difference, so I’d just pick the time that’s most convenient for you.

Remember, the Oaxaca bus station is slightly out of the city centre. So you’ll need to factor transfer time into your journey too.

Similarly for Puerto Escondido’s ADO bus terminal. Although it is located centrally, many visitors stay in the Zicatela, La Punta or Rinconada neighbourhoods. All of which require onward transport.

One option is to book via the ADO website (if you can get it to work). Although they don’t have any promotional fares available on this route, so you don’t save when booking in advance.

Another option is to book through Busbud – a bus comparison site that has a more reliable website and payment processor! An added bonus is free changes to your date and time up to 1 hour before your booked departure, giving you the flexibility you need when travelling.

> > > Planned your onward travels? After Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido, the next stop on the backpacker trail is San Cristóbal de las Casa. A beautiful mountain town that I couldn’t recommend more. Check out this complete guide on getting there from Puerto Escondido.

Option 2: Colectivo to Puerto Escondido through the mountains

Colectivos are only slightly cheaper than the ADO buses and you do sacrifice a fair bit of comfort. In these 16-seater minibuses, the seats are narrower, there’s less legroom and there’s no toilets on board.

But, they aren’t held up by protests and run much more frequently. So you’ll have more choice in when you make the journey.

And the colectivos to Puerto Escondido take the new highway from Oaxaca. So you no longer have to endure hours of travel sickness and being thrown around in your seat on the winding mountain passes!

How to get to from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido by colectivo

There are a few options for direct colectivos to Puerto Escondido.

These include:

  • La Solteca S.C.L (this is the name on Google Maps, so you can find it easily)
  • Villa Escondida
  • Villa del Pacifico

To note, there’s a good chance your luggage will be put on the roof of the vehicle. It’s rare for people to lose luggage, as normally everything is tied down well.

But, you should keep all valuables and important items in a bag that you take onto the colectivo.

Cost & Times

Colectivos are the same price as the bus – 300 pesos.

But departures are typically every hour from 3 am through to 11 pm, so they give you more flexibility in when you travel.

Booking in advance is not generally required but services will be busier around national holidays. You can usually book in advance by going to the office.

Looking out across the ruins of Monte Alban in Oaxaca City, you can see the planes take off from Oaxaca Airport from here.

Option 3: Take a flight to Puerto Escondido

Flying from Oaxaca used to be a good option to avoid the long, vomit-inducing journey or night bus. But now, it’s not much quicker once you factor in the time you’ll need at the airport.

But if budget isn’t a constraint and you’d love to see the Oaxacan mountains from above, this is cheaper than you might expect.

Can you fly from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido?

Yes, direct flights operate just a couple of times per day. But, you won’t find the OAX to Puerto Escondido route on flight comparison sites or with well-known commercial airlines.

Additionally, you won’t find a jumbo jet waiting for you on the tarmac.

Instead, small propeller planes seating no more than around 10 people make the journey each day. While this will certainly be a unique experience, it can make for a bumpier flight and landing.

The two airlines operating the OAX to Puerto Escondido (PXM) flight route are Aerotucan and Aerovega. The latter of which has almost no online presence, but is legit.

TOP TIPS: As the flight is private, it doesn’t show on the departure boards on the airport. So make sure you’re paying attention. And don’t forget you’ll pass through airport security, so get your drinks for the plane after that.

Booking & Cost

An Aerotucan Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flight can be booked online or at Oaxaca de Juarez Airport.

For Aerovega, you’ll need to email [email protected] . Or send a WhatsApp message to the airline (a one-man, one-captain company) on +529545880062.

The price of a one-way flight starts at around 210 USD/3,500 pesos. This has gone up a lot in the last year (from 2,500 pesos) due to the increasing price of fuel.

To note, you’ll want to check the luggage allowance with whichever company you book with. Smaller planes are normally much more stringent about keeping to weight allowances, including carry-on.

Excess luggage is likely to incur a costly fee to cover the increased amount of fuel needed. And, a flight is unlikely to be a suitable way to travel with a surfboard or any other bulky gear.

In all honestly, the price is not much for a near-private flying experience. Especially, if you consider the flight an activity as the views and overall experience are so cool.

Journey Time

The flight time between Oaxaca City and Puerto Escondido is only 30 minutes. And, on a clear day, you will be treated to the most majestic views of the mountains and coast.

Oaxaca Airport is a 30-minute drive from the heart of the city. While Puerto Escondido Airport is just a 10-minute drive from the Centro district and closer yet to the neighbourhoods of Bacocho and Rinconada.

Still looking for accommodation in Puerto Escondido? Find the top-rated hotels, check availability and book online through booking.com or hostelworld.com

Option 4: Drive to the coast from Oaxaca City

If you have your own car or already have one rented for an extended period, driving to Puerto Escondido makes perfect sense.

You can leave when you like, stop when you like and it means you have your car with you on the coast. Which, is a great way to get around and explore harder-to-reach beaches and towns.

But, I wouldn’t recommend hiring a car just to travel between Puerto Escondido and Oaxaca. Because the public transport routes are quick, efficient and cheap.

Is it safe driving from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido?

In short: it’s much safer now that you don’t have to navigate the mountain roads and hairpin bends!

Most of the time when this question is asked about places in Mexico, it’s usually carjackings, robberies, corrupt police officers and roadblocks that people are concerned about. None of which are a real concern on the roads here. Although, some roadblocks can occur as a way for the local people to protest.

Instead, the biggest safety concern used to be the condition of the roads and the weather conditions reducing visibility.

But, the new highway is great to drive on and the tolls should raise funds to keep it in good condition.

If you want to drive the mountain route, make the journey during the day and check the weather forecast in advance. Ideally, you’d also have experience with the roads before. As well as having experience with the car (braking distance, handling etc) and driving on the right-hand side of the road (alien to us Brits and Aussies).

Option 5: Private Transfer to Puerto Escondido

Another option to get for driving from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido is to take a private transfer. Now, these aren’t as popular or common for this route as in other parts of the country, due to the long journey time.

However, like much of Mexico, when someone is willing to pay, someone is willing to drive. But, a private transfer isn’t going to come cheap.

You can book online with free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance, as well as a pay later option.

A one-way journey in a car that seats 3 people costs 299 USD. For larger groups, a private 8-seater minibus costs 439 USD.

These costs are for the whole vehicle and therefore are split between all passengers – hotel pick up is included. For 8 people travelling in a minivan, this equates to just about 55 USD per person.

Option 6: Via San José del Pacifico (with a stopover)

An alternative option to a long drive or expensive flight is to stop mid-way. And, there’s nowhere more perfect for your stopover than the mountain town of San José del Pacifico .

Located at 2600 metres, San Jose del Pacifico is known as the magic mushroom town of Mexico.

Use of the natural psychedelics has been decriminalised in the town due to their indigenous and cultural use. As such, (a relatively small number of) backpackers and tourists come to San Jose del Pacifico for a psychedelic experience in the mountains.

But, magic mushrooms aren’t the only reason to visit San José del Pacifico. Hiking trails and viewpoints that look over the Sierra Madre mountains, often from above the clouds, are perfect for adventure-seeking visitors.

This is the perfect place for a stopover between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido as you can stay for one, two, three or more nights. Accommodation is available in cheap town-centre hotels or more remote forest cabins where you’ll be fully disconnected from the rest of the world.

For more information and a detailed guide on how to get there from Oaxaca City and then on to Puerto Escondido, read this complete guide to visiting San José del Pacifico .

Or, Mazunte and Zipolite, Oaxaca’s coastal spiritual towns with sprawling beaches. In fact, some of Mexico’s best beaches are in Oaxaca – here are 25 Oaxaca beaches you should add to your must-visit list!

Hi, thanks for this post, it‘s super useful. You go in detail about this journey. Are there nice to sit and wait for the night bus Puerto-Oaxaca for those of us who checked out our rooms in the morning at Mazunte, for instance? Nice cool cafes would be lovely to hear. Left luggage, showers. Thanks a lot

' src=

Thank you, glad you found it useful. I’m not sure of any cafes, I just hung around at my hostel under about 9 pm and then headed straight to the bus station. It could be worth contacting some nearby hostels you like the look of, and seeing if they offer day passes to use their facilities. They generally have secure areas for luggage too.

Hey there! Great info thank you for putting it out there.

We will probably opt for the ADO bus for the oaxaca to PE trip, but do you have advice for getting from PE to Hautalco and back? we have around 4 weeks on the coast and would like to saty in one or two towns on the way and maybe explore the coutnry and hills above. We had considered driving a rentla yet there seem to be quite a few negatives to this idea!

Any advice greatly appreciate.

Dil and Sooz, Wales, UK

You can take the ADO/OCC buses from the ADO Terminal in Puerto Escondido to the ADO Terminal in Huatulco. The journey takes around 2.5 hours and you can book tickets either online or at the bus station. On that route the bus also stops at Pochutla, where you can find local bus connections to Mazunte or Zipolite – two smaller beach towns. From Pochutla, you can also take smaller minibuses to San Jose del Pacifico – a small town in the mountains of Oaxaca, much cooler than the coast where you can hike and enjoy a different kind of nature.

amazing! thank you so much!! thats really helpful

' src=

Thanks for sharing, we chose the Oaxaca Shuttle company in private service, and we asked them to make a stop in San José del Pacífico, it is impressive how beautiful it is and especially to see the green mountains. The fee was $349 usd. Thanks for the information you share.

Hi Sam, Thanks for letting me know – I’m glad your trip was enjoyable.

Hi Zoe, I have the following itinerary after leaving Tulum:

24/10 – 28/10: Oaxaca City (4 Nights) 28/10 – 31/10: Mexico City (3 Nights)

I’ve heard Puerto Escondido is amazing and highly recommended by others when coming to the Oaxaca State. I don’t know when I will get to come back to Mexico (I’m Australian) so is it worth changing my trip to the following just to squeeze in Puerto Escondido?

24/10 – 27/10: Oaxaca City (3 Nights) 27/10 – 29/10: Puerto Escondido (2 Nights) 29/10 – 31/10: Mexico City (2 Nights)

Please help! Thanks so much Shauney

Hi, I think it comes down to whether you want to spend as much time at the beach as possible or not? If you want to be at the beach, then go to Puerto Escondido. But remember, the travel days are long so you’ll probably see very little of each place. Personally, I think Oaxaca City and Mexico City offer much more of an insight into Mexican culture and history (Oaxaca City: Monte Alban, Hierve el Agua, Mezcal tasting, Historic centre & Mexico City: Teotihuacan, Historic centre, Chapultepec, Coyocan), whereas Puerto Escondido is a chilled beach town with good nightlife and an international crowd. Hope that helps.

' src=

Hi, I think I will choose the ADO bus. How is the ride on this bus from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido. Are there many mountains to cross?

It does cross the mountains so there are a lot of winding roads and turns but I didn’t find it too bad. Just make sure to keep your belongings secure as they can slide along the floor with all the turns. And try to avoid sitting at the back as you’ll feel the bumps more there.

Hello! Super helpful post – thank you! It’s August 2023 now – any update on when the highway will be finished?!! Vicki x

Unfortunately not – the latest update I’ve seen is this: https://elsoldepuerto.com/highway-update/ . It explains more about the hold up and how it’ll be at least late 2023 before it’s ready

Looking for the best ways to get from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido? Or from Puerto Escondido to Oaxaca? In the following post, I explain the different ways to travel between the two places in Mexico as a backpacker.

Puerto Escondido in November

Travelling between Puerto Escondido and Oaxaca isn’t as easy as I’d love it to be! If I’m honest, it’s quite a task, and most ways to travel between the two are either expensive or incredibly uncomfortable.

The actual distance between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido by road is around a 6-hour drive, but because of the turbulent mountain roads between the two, this isn’t advised. The local bus takes this route, but it’s well known for travel sickness and one bumpy ride. Not many backpackers pick this option!

So let’s get down to the best ways to travel to Puerto Escondido from Oaxaca City as a backpacker or tourist.

How To Get From Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido: A Summary

The current highway between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido isn’t necessarily deemed as ‘safe’. In fact, it’s advised to avoid this road altogether, due to frequent falling rocks, landslides, uneven terrain, curvy roads and a high risk of accidents. Not to mention the travel sickness!

Most commonly, backpackers will board the ADO bus from Oaxaca City to reach Puerto Escondido. The ADO bus takes 10.5 hours, and goes the long way around, down a 500km coastal road. The ADO bus does not drive through the mountains, and it is a much safer, easier and pleasant journey (well, as pleasant as a bus journey can be).

However, it takes nearly 11 hours, and at the time of writing this, all ADO Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido buses are overnight.

But, good news is coming! There is a 102km highway currently being built, which will cut the driving time from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido in half. This means the dreaded 6-7 hour bumpy mountainous route will be a 2-3 hour car journey instead.

The opening date of this highway hasn’t been confirmed and has moved quite a few times in 2022. But hopefully, the highway will be open in 2023.

In the meantime, you have a few options when travelling between Oaxaca City and Puerto Escondido:

  • ADO bus (most budget-friendly option)
  • Plane (most expensive option)
  • Taxi, car share or minibus
  • Hiring a car and doing the drive yourself

Let’s go through each one so you can decide which is the best way for you.

NOTE: When the highway is finally up and running (hopefully by the start of 2023), getting between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido will be a lot easier. In the meantime, it’s a bit of a struggle, but still doable as a backpacker in Mexico!

This is the cheapest and most economical way for backpackers to travel between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido. However, make sure you book the ADO bus (book direct here ), rather than the local bus that drives through the mountains.

As previously mentioned, the shorter (6-7 hour) drive from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido through the mountains is known as a treacherous, dangerous and unadvised drive, so is best avoided altogether.

The ADO bus takes 4-5 hours longer but drives the entire way around the mountains to avoid this. Currently, the ADO bus only runs overnight to Oaxaca or vice versa.

  • Time: Between 8-11pm nightly
  • Price: £10-35 ($12-40) – depending on the time of booking, time of year
  • Duration: 11-12 hours
  • Facilities: Toilets and (unreliable) Wifi onboard. You will also make 2-3 stops and are given a bottle of water at the start of your journey. The bus will also play a movie in Spanish.

I have personally taken the ADO bus , and although I hate overnight bus journeys, I can confirm it is safe and comfortable. There are no ‘treacherous’ roads or curves to be worried about. Actually falling asleep on the other hand, was impossible (how do people do it?!)

Don’t rely on the Wifi onboard, or your 4G. When you’re not in big cities or towns in Mexico, it’s unlikely you will have any signal at all.

Booking buses in Mexico? I highly recommend the ADO bus when moving from place to place. It’s safe, clean, modern and has toilets! You can compare prices and book tickets here .

The quickest way to get between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido is by plane, but it’s expensive, and not in many backpacker’s budgets.

Catching a regular commercial flight between the two is pretty non-existent, and you’ll have to stop off via Mexico City first. For example, if you type into Skyscanner ‘Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido’, you’ll have to fly via Mexico City. Some flights take over 10 hours!

If you want a direct flight from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido, you’ll need to book via Aerotucan . This is then a short 40-minute flight in a small plane. It’s safe and fast, but you can only take on 15kg of luggage, and availability is hard to come by. Make sure you book in advance if you’re looking for seats.

Then there’s the cost. This short flight can cost up to £180 ($200) each way, but you may be able to find it cheaper depending on the time of year.

  • Time: Varies, but most are early morning
  • Price: £150-200 ($200-250) depending on the time of booking, time of year
  • Duration: 40 minutes

By taxi or private car

If you decide to take a taxi all the way from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido, you can expect to pay quite a lot. Bear in mind the mountainous journey takes 7 hours, and the safer route takes 11, so you’re asking for a lot!

Be sure to ask the taxi driver if they are comfortable with driving that far first, and expect to pay upwards of £200/$250 one way.

Alternatively, you can get a private driver in a minibus, and split the cost with a group of you. Just be aware that most minibuses and taxis will opt for a shorter journey through the mountains, so make sure you are comfortable with this before leaving.

Getting around Puerto Escondido

By hire car

The final option is to tackle the drive yourself. Whichever way you choose is down to you, and can be done from the comfort of your own hire car .

If you are renting a car, be sure to check the road conditions and for accidents beforehand. Due to the landslides, there can be road blockages that could disrupt your entire journey.

Also, do the journey during the day. Streetlights are hard to come by in Mexico, let alone in the mountains!

As I said, the highway is currently being built, so hopefully, the drive between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido will be much safer and easier very soon! In the meantime, we will personally be sticking to the safety and cheap prices of the ADO bus!

Looking to hire a car in Mexico? We’ve driven all over Quintana Roo, and recommend it as one of the safest ways to travel. Use this company for the best prices!

How To Get From Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido FAQs

How much is a taxi from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido?

Depending on the time of year and the route you are taking, the journey will be upwards of £200/$250 one way. This is via the mountains, so if you would rather go along the coast on the ‘safer’ roads, it will be considerably more.

When is the new Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido highway opening?

There are plans for the new highway to be open by the end of 2022. This highway would mean the drive between Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido would only take 2-3 hours, instead of 6-7 hours.

How long is the bus from Oaxaca city to Puerto Escondido?

If you get the ADO bus, it takes around 11 hours from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido. If you opt for the local bus, it will take around 6-7 hours. Most backpackers and tourists book with ADO, as it is known to be safer and more reliable.

Why does it take so long to drive from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido?

The bus takes a long time due to it avoiding dangerous and curvy mountain roads. The ADO bus does not take this route and instead travels around the mountains and along the coast.

Unfortunately, there’s no option to book online. This means the only way to buy tickets for the Colectivo is from the ticket office at each bus stop. The average price is 250 MXN ($12.70) but can vary a bit depending on demand.

Colectivo schedules from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido

During the ride, you will get at least one 30-minute stop to use the toilet and eat. Not only is this a good time to fill up your empty stomach, but also a great opportunity to stretch your legs!

Departure and arrival station

Both Villa del Pacífico and Service Express offer a similar standard of quality and each one has its own departure point in Oaxaca. Villa del Pacifico departs from Galeana St., while Service Express leave from their terminal along Calle de M. Arista. The two are about 1.5 km away from each other.

No matter which company you book with, the Colectivo will drop you off at the central bus station, also known as ‘ Terminal TUR ‘ in Puerto Escondido. It’s pretty basic, so it’s unlikely you’ll find any authorised taxis waiting outside.

Fortunately, Terminal TUR is located close to the city centre and the main beach. This means you may be able to walk to your accommodation. If it’s too far, you can walk towards the ADO station , 100 meters down Avenida Costera road, and take a taxi from there. Taxi rates start at around 50 MXN ($2.50).

Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido by Bus

Buses are more comfortable than the colectivo. Not only do the buses avoid bumpy roads, but they also have more space to stretch your legs as well as a toilet onboard.

The only disadvantage is that it’s going to be a long journey. Travel time by bus from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido is around 10.5 hours. That’s 3.5 hours more than when you take a colectivo.

On the plus side, you’ll be travelling with OCC Bus, which offers first-class buses with AC and reclining seats at affordable rates. There are three overnight bus trips available daily and they arrive in Puerto Escondido the next morning. This means you can save some money on accommodation and spend your daytime on more important things.

A bus ticket costs 415 MXN ($21), but may be more expensive during the high season (December to April).

Bus schedule from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido

For guaranteed seats on your desired date and time, we highly recommend booking your tickets online through BookAway . If you prefer to buy tickets at the bus station, make sure you arrive at least 30 minutes prior to departure time.

Departure and arrival stations

Buses going from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido depart from the main bus station in Oaxaca . Depending on your hotel’s location in Oaxaca City, the bus terminal can be within walking distance or a short taxi ride away.

In Puerto Escondido, the bus will drop you off at ADO’s bus terminal near the city centre and just a couple of blocks from the main beach. You can walk to most accommodations. If yours is too far, the most convenient option is to take a taxi from right outside the bus station. Taxi rates start from 50 MXN ($2.50).

Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido by Flight

Flying from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido is the fastest option but also the most expensive. Also, note that big commercial airlines don’t operate direct flights for this route. Prepare to take a small plane operated by either Aerotucan or Aerovega.

TIP: If you decide to travel by plane, please consider including a carbon compensation fee to reduce your impact on the environment.

Step 1: City Centre to Oaxaca Airport

All flights from Oaxaca to Mexico City depart from Oaxaca International Airport , which you can find about 8 km south of Oaxaca City. You can get there by taxi in around 25 minutes. Taxi fares start from 250 MXN ($12.70).

Step 2: Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido by Flight

Only small single-propeller planes fly direct from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido. If you’re not comfortable with this type of aircraft, it’s better to look into the road options or make a layover.

Rates for one-way flights start from 2,500 MXN ($125).

Booking with Aerotucan

Aerotucan offers 1 departure a day, usually in the mornings, and it costs around 3,300 MXN ($165). You can buy tickets online through the Aerotucan website . You can also book directly at their ticket counter at Oaxaca City Airport, but we don’t recommend doing that on the same day of your trip because tickets are most probably sold out.

Booking with Aerovega

Online information about Aerovega is almost non-existent because it is a small airline. The pilot, Don Vega, does most of the duties including the booking. Although a small company, Aerovega and Don Vega get great reviews.

To check availability and prices, you’ll need to send an email to [email protected] or message them on WhatsApp +529545880062. The pilot speaks English, and his rates are often cheaper than Aerotucan, starting from around 2,500 MXN ($125).

Looking for a bigger aircraft? You can consider doing a layover in Mexico City, but this will make the flight duration to at least 6 hours, excluding airport transfers. If you want to look into this option, you can check flights on Skyscanner .

Step 3: Puerto Escondido Airport to City Centre

Puerto Escondido’s International Airport is located within the city, just 5 minutes by car from the beach area and the town’s centre.

If your accommodation is nearby, you can consider walking. But if you’re carrying a lot of luggage, it’s best to take a taxi right from outside the airport. Rates start from 50 MXN ($2.50).

Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido by Private Transport

A private transfer is a convenient option when travelling in a group from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido.

Rates start from [price_price] for a 3-seater private transfer. Divide the cost and that’s just about 2,370 MXN ($120) per person. Travel time is around 7 hours.

My guide to puerto escondido, oaxaca: mexico’s surf paradise (2024).

My travel guide to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Puerto Escondido is one of my all time favorite beach destinations in Mexico . Blessed with stunning beaches, epic sunsets, and world-class surfing yet Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca still manages to retain the laid-back vibes of an authentic Mexican beach town.

This gem on Mexico’s Pacific coast is a paradise for surfers, beach lovers, yogis, backpackers, and anyone who wants to experience stunning nature and an authentic Mexican beach town. It’s also becoming increasingly popular with digital nomads despite the sometimes erratic internet.

Want to know why Puerto Escondido is becoming so popular? In my complete Puerto Escondido guide, I’ll cover everything you need to know to plan your trip and make the most of your vacation here.

Puerto Escondido Guide (2024)

Where is puerto escondido, oaxaca.

Puerto Escondido is a charming, surf mad, coastal town located in the state of Oaxaca which is south of Mexico City on the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Its name translates to “Hidden Port,” and while no longer a secret, Puerto Escondido still maintains its small-town charm and authentic Mexican beach town atmosphere despite its growing popularity as Mexico’s best surf destination.

Puerto Escondido Airport receives daily flights from Mexico City, which take about one hour, as well as other destinations in Mexico. The airport makes Puerto Escondido easily accessible by air and a great gateway to explore the stunning Oaxaca Coast including the laidback beach towns of Mazunte and Zipolite and even the resorts in Huatulco.

The town is also connected by bus to other Mexican cities including Oaxaca City. It’s about a five-hour drive from Oaxaca City, the capital city of Oaxaca. I’ll go into more detail about how to get here and how to get around later on in this Puerto Escondido travel guide.

What is Puerto Escondido Famous for

Puerto Escondido mexico zicatela surfer waves

While Puerto Escondido remains more off the beaten track as a tourist destination the town is most famous for surfing due to the legendary waves known as the Mexican Pipeline on Zicatela Beach. In recent years the surf mad town has also become popular with yogis, backpackers and digital nomads.

Besides surfing, there’s also a wide range of activities and experiences for all types of travelers with numerous beaches to enjoy and a vibrant local culture, cuisine and nightlife to explore. It’s also a great base for taking day trips to explore the nearby natural wonders. So there’s something for everyone to enjoy when visiting Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.

Another thing that makes Puerto Escondido so special is that it is situated between two distinct ecosystems: the tropical beaches and lagoons of the Pacific Coast and the lush mountainous jungles of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountain range which makes it rich in natural beauty.

A Puerto Escondido vacation is a great choice if you want to explore Mexican culture and cuisine as well as enjoy the beautiful beaches and unique nature. It’s a lot less overdeveloped, touristy and crowded than famous Mexican beach resorts like Cancun so it has a much more authentic and laid back feel and is more affordable for budget travelers.

Where to Stay in Puerto Escondido – Best Beaches and Areas

As you can see there’s plenty of reasons to book your trip to Puerto Escondido, but first it’s important to do a bit of research into the different beaches, neighbourhoods and areas to stay in Puerto Escondido so that you choose the best place to stay.

Even though Puerto Escondido is a small beach town it’s quite spread out and not really very walkable, it can take an hour to walk the 4 miles between Playa Carrizallio and La Punta in the Mexican heat. So choosing the right location where to stay in Puerto Escondido and the right accommodation is essential to make the most of your time here.

Puerto Escondido Map

Here’s a map to help you get acquainted with the area:

Puerto Escondido map

There’s several choices and each beach and area offers a wide range of accommodation options, from backpacker hostels and surf camps, to boutique resorts and yoga retreats, and everything in between, so whatever your budget and preferences you’ll find something to suit.

Refreshingly there’s not many huge luxury resorts or big chain hotels yet which adds to the authentic charm.

Here is a quick guide to the best beaches, neighborhoods and areas to stay in Puerto Escondido, as well as my top hotel recommendations for each budget category.

The Best Beaches in Puerto Escondido

Exploring the many stunning, sandy beaches is definitely one of the highlights of a trip to Puerto Escondido. Each has a unique charm and atmosphere, so make sure to allow time in your Puerto Escondido itinerary to visit at least a few, but for the best experience you’ll probably want to stay near your favorite beach.

Here are the top Puerto Escondido beaches and areas to stay in:

Playa Zicatela – For Epic Surf and Nightlife

Surfer surfing on surfboard on high waves in Puerto Escondido Mexico

Famous for its powerful waves, Zicatela Beach is home to one of the best surf spots in the world. The consistently huge (over 10 feet high!) world-class waves that come barrelling in from ‘the Mexican Pipeline’ are for experienced surfers only but are a spectacle to watch and international surfing competitions are held here.

While you can swim at other beaches in Puerto Escondido, Zicatela is not safe for swimming due to strong currents and huge waves. But the long, sandy beach is perfect for sunbathing and the sunsets are as epic as the waves. Watching the surfers conquer the waves and enjoying sunset and cocktails at the lively beach clubs is one of my favorite things to do in Puerto Escondido.

Best Places to Stay in Zicatela

Playa Zicatela is the best place to stay for experienced surfers and those looking for a lively atmosphere and lots of nightlife.

Zicatela offers numerous accommodations, beach clubs, bars, and beachfront restaurants and plenty of accommodation to suit all budget from surf hostels to more upmarket beach resorts.

Here’s my top picks for where to stay in Zicatela:

  • Luxury : Casa Joseph Zicatela – Stunning beachfront adults only 5 star resort with seaview rooms – some with private pools.
  • Mid-Range : Selina – Laidback friendly resort with a variety of rooms for all budgets just across the road from the beach. Perfect for digital nomads and solo travelers.
  • Budget : La Playita Beach House – Amazing value hotel with pool and shared kitchen just steps from the beach
  • Backpacker : One Love Hostal – Friendly backpacker hostel with dormitories, bungalows and yoga classes located in between Zicatela and La Punta

Playa La Punta – For Laidback Vibes

Puerto Escondido mexico la punta sunset walking dog

Located at the far southern end of Playa Zicatela, La Punta offers a more laid-back and bohemian atmosphere and smaller waves suitable for intermediate surfers making it a popular place for surf lessons.

There’s also some rustic beach bars with sun loungers making it a perfect spot for a relaxing day by the ocean. Just behind the beach the sandy lanes are full off boutique shops, cool cafes, vegan restaurants and a growing low key nightlife scene.

Sunsets are great here too and there’s more of a bohemian, community vibe with people playing volleyball and expats walking their dogs.

Best Places to Stay in La Punta

La Punta is the best place to stay in Puerto Escondido if you are looking for a slice of the laid back beach lifestyle. The sandy lanes, palm trees and abundance of smoothie bowls makes you feel like you could be on a tropical island and the waves are much more suitable for beginner surfers.

Offering a more laid-back vibe, La Punta is perfect for travelers seeking a quieter beach experience with easy access to laid back beach bars, surf breaks for beginners and intermediates.

  • Luxury : Casa Kuaa – Stunning new hotel with a great pool right on the beach.
  • Mid-Range : Casa de Olas Boutique Hotel – Beautiful boutique hotel with a pool and stunning terrace for yoga classes.
  • Budget : Bikini Beach House – Great value budget hotel in the heart of the action in La Punta.

Playa Carrizalillo – The Most Beautiful Beach

Puerto Escondido mexico carrizalillo beach surfer

Nestled in a picturesque cove, Playa Carrizalillo is the most beautiful beach in Puerto Escondido and my personal favorite.

The calm turquoise waters make it an excellent spot for swimming and snorkelling. It’s also a good place for beginner surfers looking to learn how to surf.

Carrizalillo beach is not far from the main downtown area but is only accessible via a steep set of stairs which adds to it’s secluded charm. From above, this blissful bay of turquoise water and palm trees is a view I could happily gaze at for hours.

There’s a couple of laid-back palapas (thatched beach bars) where you can eat delicious fish tacos and sip refreshing mojitos. There are restaurants, bars and shops in the Rinconda area and the town is not far away.

Best Places to Stay near Playa Carrizalillo and Rinconda

The beaches in this area offer the calmest waters perfect for swimming and learning to surf and a more tranquil atmosphere with beautiful beaches. The sheltered bays of Playa Puerto Angelito and Playa Manzanillo and the small bay of Playa Coral are within walking distance.

The area just above Playa Carrizalillo is called Rinconda and it’s the best place to stay in Puerto Escondido for families and those looking for a peaceful vacation. Its close to the town and the airport and there are some shops and restaurants but not much nightlife in this area.

  • Luxury : Villas Carrizalillo – Luxury villas and suites with a pool, tropical gardens and spectacular views over Carrizalillo beach.
  • Mid-Range : Hotel Villa Mozart y Macondo – Lovely bungalows and suites nestled in tropical gardens with friendly hosts super close to the beach
  • Budget : Carri Surf Studio – Comfortable studios is a central location with a nice rooftop patio.

Playa Puerto Angelito and Playa Manzanillo – For Calm, Sheltered Bays

Puerto Escondido mexico manzanillo beach

These two neighboring bays within walking distance from Playa Carrizalillo and the downtown area are perfect for families and those looking for a calm swimming spot. With shallow, clear water and a handful of beachside eateries Puerto Angelito beach and Manzanillo beach are the perfect places to relax.

Playa Bacocho – To Release Sea Turtles

Puerto Escondido mexico sea turtles

Playa Bacocho is a wild and undeveloped beach located in the north end of Puerto Escondido town home to a turtle release center.

Here you can participate in rescuing sea turtle eggs or releasing baby sea turtles into the ocean for the ultimate feel good experience. Usually the sea turtle release happens at around sunset time.

The best resort in this area is Posada Real Puerto Escondido – a 4 star beach resort with all everything you could ever want including 2 outdoor swimming pools and private beach club. If you have a smaller budget Hotel Suites Villasol is a great choice.

The Bacocho neighborhood is a slightly away from the beach but a good area for digital nomads and expats looking to stay more long term.

Playa Principal – The Main Town Beach

Puerto Escondido Mexico Playa Principal and downtown

No mention of Puerto Escondido beaches is complete without Playa Prinicpal. Located in the downtown Centro area of Puerto Escondido, Playa Principal is a popular spot for locals and fishermen and home to some local seafood restaurants.

While it’s close to the Centro, or downtown area, and all the amenities of town the the main beach isn’t the best or cleanest of the Puerto Escondido beaches for swimming as it is usually filled with fishing boats. But it is a good spot of people watching and for being in the middle of everything so it’s a good choice for long stayers and budget travellers.

Just behind Playa Principal is the main street or El Adoquín which is a long beachfront boardwalk where you’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, and nightlife and all the ATMs.

Best Places to Stay in Centro near Playa Prinicpal

There’s not any luxury resorts in the Centro area but it’s a good place to stay for digital nomads, budget travelers or longer stayers who want to be close to all the amenities of downtown.

Mid Range: Casa Losodeli – Sociable tropical resort with apartments, private rooms and dormitories complete with pool, tropical gardens and coworking

Budget: Colorada House – Great value private rooms and dorms around a beautiful tropical swimming pool area close to Centro.

Backpacker: El Coyote Hostel – Cheap air conditioned dormitory rooms in a popular and sociable backpacker hostel.

Top Things to Do in Puerto Escondido

If you like your vacation to be a little more active than just beach hopping there’s plenty to do in Puerto Escondido and the surrounding area.

The easiest way to book activities and tours in Puerto Escondido is on Viator – I find being able to read reviews from previous travellers really useful so I know what to expect from the experience.

From surf lessons, boat trips and yoga classes to exploring the local culture, cuisine and nearby natural beauty spots, Puerto Escondido offers a plethora of things to do for all types of travelers.

Here are some of the top things to do in Puerto Escondido:

Take a Surf Lesson

best surf camps in mexico

As Mexico’s top surf spot surfing is obviously one of the very best things to do in Puerto Escondido. While the world class waves at Zicatela beach are only suitable for experienced surfers there’s plenty of surf schools offering surfing lessons for beginners at Playa La Punta or Playa Carrizalillo.

You can find plenty of surf schools in Puerto Escondido with professional instructors that can cater to all levels. It’s a good idea to book your surf lessons online in advance in peak season to secure your spot.

If you’re serious about improving your skills and maybe tackling Zicatela one day consider joining a surf camp in Puerto Escondido where you’ll get to learn how to surf safely in a fun and sociable environment.

I spent some time with Oasis Surf School and the package was great value for money including accommodation, surf lessons and equipment, yoga classes and Spanish lessons. Trust me learning some Spanish is a great thing to do while in Mexico and will make your travels much easier and help you connect better with the locals. The surf house is located near Playa Carrizalillo and offers fully equipped apartments complete with a swimming pool, terrace and common area.

Swim in a Bioluminescent Lagoon

14km west of Puerto Escondido is the incredible Manialtepec Lagoon and one of the most magical and unique things to do in Puerto Escondido is to swim with bioluminescent plankton in the Manialtepec Lagoon.

The tiny, glowing organisms light up the water with an ethereal, glitter-like effect whenever they are disturbed. Swimming through the shimmering water feels like swimming in a sea of stars It’s such a magical, other-worldly experience.

You can experience this natural phenomenon on this night time boat tour . The best time to visit is during the new moon as the sky is darker so it’s easier to see the plankton. Witnessing the incredible natural phenomena of phosphorescent plankton is definitely an unforgettable experience. It’s really hard to get a photo of it so you’ll just have to experience it for yourself!

You can also go on a bird watching and kayaking tour  to explore more of the Manialtepec Lagoon.

Release a Baby Turtle

Puerto Escondido mexico turtle

Puerto Escondido is an important nesting area for several species of sea turtles, including the endangered Olive Ridley turtle who lay their eggs in the sand of the unspoilt beaches. For the ultimate feel good activity you can participate in sea turtle conservation efforts helping to release baby turtles into the sea at Playa Bacocho.

The conservation organization runs the turtle release project where, every day at 5 pm, you can ensure a newly hatched sea turtle finds its way safely into the Pacific ocean giving them a better chance of survival.

This turtle release experience is not only fun and educational, it’s also an incredible opportunity to contribute to the conservation of these amazing creatures and one of the very best things to do in Puerto Escondido. If you are an animal lover it’s sure to be one of the highlights of your Puerto Escondido trip!

Go on a Boat Trip to Spot Dolphins or Whales

There’s plenty of opportunities to take a boat trip out to explore the ocean to go snorkelling, spot sea turtles, dolphins, and (depending on the season) whales or just enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Oaxaca coast.

The waters around Puerto Escondido are home to a variety of marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, and migrating whales which makes it is a fantastic destination for wildlife enthusiasts. If you visit from November through April, you can embark on a whale watching tour to witness the majestic humpback whales as they travel through the area with their calves.

You can also join this dolphin watching boat trip any time of the year for the chance to see these playful creatures up close. Be sure to choose a responsible tour operator that follows ethical practices to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for both you and the animals.

Join a Yoga Class

Experiencia Puerdo Escondido surf and yoga retreat in mexico

Where there are surfers, yoga is not far behind! Surfing and yoga are a great combination and are often combined into one perfect retreat helping to build strength and flexibility and soothing sore muscles and so most surf camps also offer yoga classes as part of the package.

For daily drop in yoga classes try One Love Hostel near La Punta which hosts yoga classes on the terrace overlooking the ocean for a serene and blissful experience. Jardín Ganesha in Zicatela also offer excellent yoga and meditation sessions.

There’s also some great yoga retreats in Puerto Escondido, my favorite is Barbarenas. It’s located in a beautiful, sustainable and eco friendly resort near Zicatela beach with a swimming pool , tropical gardens and gorgeous cabanas and yoga shala with mesmerising views over the ocean. The yoga retreat package includes personalised yoga classes, meditation and pranayama sessions as well as delicious vegan food.

Afterwards you could also indulge in a rejuvenating massage, facial, or spa treatment at one of the town’s many spas and wellness centers and go for smoothie bowl or vegan tacos and make a wellness day out of it.

Try Oaxacan Food and Drink and Visit the Benito Juárez Market

Join the locals and experience the colors, smells and tastes of an authentic Mexican market by visiting Benito Juárez Market (also known as Mercado Principal.) Don’t miss the chance to taste some of Puerto Escondido’s delicious local dishes, such as tlayudas, mole, and fresh seafood.

You can take a food tour to sample the most authentic Oaxacan food in the best local restaurants or cooking class to learn more about the region’s rich culinary traditions and flavors.

And as you’re in Oaxaca don’t miss the chance to visit a Mezcal distillery just 15 minutes from Puerto Escondido where you can learn about and sample this classic Oaxacan tipple.

These are just a few suggestions for what to do in Puerto Escondido. Activities like fishing, horseback riding, visiting hot springs, zip-lining and more. Check out my full things to do in Puerto Escondido guide for the complete list.

Just an hour’s drive west of Puerto Escondido this tiny, laid-back Mexican beach town and ‘ pueblo magico ‘ is a great place to visit for a day of relaxation, sunbathing, and swimming.

Mazunte is home to the Mexican Turtle Center , a conservation facility that offers educational exhibits and the chance to see several species of sea turtles up close. Also don’t miss the short hike to Punta Cometa , it’s especially magical at sunset time.

Mazunte is also one of Mexico’s yoga hotspots and offers many classes and workshops in all sort of alternative therapies.  Read my Mazunte Guide for more.

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca - the only offical nude beach in Mexico

Just 15 mins away from Mazunte is the free spirited, bohemian small beach town of Zipolite so you can easily visit them both in one day trip from Puerto Escondido.

Playa Zipolite is famous for being clothing optional and is the only official nude beach in Mexico. It’s a stunning, laid back beach lined with rustic beach shacks and relaxed bars and popular with the LGBTQ community.  Read my Playa Zipolite Guide for more.

This beautiful coastal resort area, located about two hours south of Puerto Escondido, is known for its pristine beaches, clear blue bays and lush national park. You can spend the day relaxing on the beach, snorkeling, or taking a boat tour to explore the area’s many hidden coves and bays.

The best way to reach these places in with a rental car as public transport can a bit tricky and irregular, or by taking a tour like this excellent Oaxacan Coast adventure which takes you to visit the lagoons of Ventanilla, visit Mazunte and Zipolite beach, have lunch at Puerto Angel and a stop at a Mezcaleria!

This is just a small selection of the very best places to visit near Puerto Escondido. FAQ’s and Travel Tips for Planning Your Trip to Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Here’s some essential travel tips for to help you plan and get the most of your visit to Puerto Escondido:

Best Time to Visit Puerto Escondido

The ideal time to visit Puerto Escondido is during the dry season, which runs from November to April.

During this period, you’ll enjoy warm temperatures, sunny days, and minimal rainfall. This is the best time to visit for beginner surfers but its also the peak tourist season and the best hotels get fully booked up so it’s a good idea to book in advance if you plan to visit during this time.

The months of May to October are considered the rainy season in Puerto Escondido, with a higher chance of tropical storms and hurricanes. The legendary waves get even bigger between May and August making it the best time to visit for experienced surfers looking for a challenge or those who want to watch the surf competitions.

November is also a great month to visit, as the town hosts the Fiestas de Noviembre, a month-long celebration featuring various events, including fishing tournaments, surfing competitions, and food festivals. You could also combine your visit with celebrating Dias Dos Muertos in Oaxaca City.

How to Get to Puerto Escondido

Getting to Puerto Escondido is easy thanks to the airport and bus services that connect it to Mexico City, Oaxaca City and the rest of the world. There’s several options for traveling to Puerto Escondido:

Puerto Escondido may be a small town but it has an airport! Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM) is a great gateway to the Oaxaca Coast. There are cheap direct flights from Mexico City that take about 1 hour.

Mexico City Airport (MEX) has many international connections from all over the world so you can fly into Mexico and easily connect in Mexico City from an international flight to reach Puerto Escondido. This is definitely the quickest way to get to Puerto Escondido. Check Skyscanner to find the best deals.

Puerto Escondido airport also has direct flights to Guadalajara. Huatulco Airport (HUX) is about 100 km away and has direct flights to Canada.

You can also fly from Oaxaca City by taking a 30 minute scenic flight in a small plane. You’ll get great views over the mountains but this is the most expensive options and flights often get booked up way in advance.

By Bus from Oaxaca City

A popular route to get to Puerto Escondido is by bus from Oaxaca City but, if you suffer from motion sickness, be aware that this route does involve traveling along windy mountain roads.

The best and most comfortable route is to take the ADO or OCC bus which travels overnight and takes about 11 hours. It’s a popular route so you should book your bus online in advance.

Another option is to take a 7 hour mini bus from Oaxaca City to Pochutla. This is the quickest route but also the most windy although personally I didn’t find it too bad but then I don’t normally suffer from travel sickness. From Pochutla you can take a local bus, taxi or transfer to Puerto Escondido which will take 1 – 2 hours.

There are also ADO buses from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido but at 17 hours it’s a long journey and normally not much cheaper than taking a flight.

How to Get Around Puerto Escondido

Puerto Escondido is quite spread out so give some thought to where you want to base yourself and how you will get around the town. There’s a couple of options depending on your budget:

  • Taxis : Taxis are readily available and affordable for getting around town. Uber is not available in Puerto Escondido yet so you’ll have to hail a cab on the street or ask your hotel to call one. There are plenty of taxis and shared shuttles at the airport too.  A typical taxi ride within the town costs 30-35 pesos ($1.50-2) Most don’t have meters so agree on a price before setting off.
  • Public Transportation : Collectivos and camionetas are the primary forms of local public transportation, running from sunrise to around 8:30 PM and costing 8 pesos (less than $0.50) per ride. There are also buses connecting Puerto Escondido with the nearby towns like Pochutla but if you want to visit Mazunte and Zipolite you’ll have to get off half way and switch to a local collectivo.
  • Car or Motorbike Rental : Renting a car or motorbike is also a good option, especially if you want to have the freedom to explore the surrounding area and nearby attractions.

Is Puerto Escondido Safe?

Yes, Puerto Escondido is generally a safe destination, and one of the safest places in Mexico but it’s still wise to take precautions and stay aware of your surroundings. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Avoid walking alone on the beach at night and stay in well-lit areas and avoid getting so drunk that you make yourself vulnerable.
  • Be cautious of the water, as strong currents and riptides can be dangerous. Always pay attention to lifeguard warnings and red flags on the beaches.
  • When traveling to or from Puerto Escondido, consider flying instead of taking overnight buses through Guerrero, a state known for its high crime rates.
  • Be discreet with your valuables, don’t leave your stuff unattended on the beach and don’t carry too much cash with you.

Puerto Escondido is much safer than other places in Mexico. By following these safety tips and using common sense, you’ll likely have no problems visiting Puerto Escondido even as a solo female traveller.

Can you Swim in Puerto Escondido?

Some beaches in Puerto Escondido like Zicatela are famous for surfing, the huge waves and strong currents mean they are not safe for swimming. However the sheltered shallow bays of Playa Carrizalillio, Playa Puerto Angelito and Playa Manzanillo are home to much calmer water and are safer for swimming, families, and learning to surf.

Puerto Escondido

Is this where surfers go when they die? Many places claim to be the world’s best surfing beach, but Puerto Escondido’s Playa Zicatela – 3.5km of golden sand and crashing waves – would make most wave-riders’ top tens. Even if you have no desire to test your balance as a 20ft wave curls over your head, Mexico’s ‘hidden port’ is a highly desirable place, a small mellow town where Mexicans, expats and world travelers intermingle, and surfboards are as ubiquitous as cell phones.

Looking into flights to puerto escondido oaxaca?

You’re in the right place because I’ve done the Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flight before. In this article, I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about taking this flight so you know if it’s right for you.

For those who have the budget, the fastest way to get from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido is by taking a flight. It is also the most expensive, but it’s just 45 minutes compared to 7-10 hours of drive time.

For Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido flights, you have two options — AeroTucan and AeroVega. As I’ve personally done the AeroTucan flight, you’ll get all my pro tips on that below (though there’s also info for the AeroVega flight).

Ready to learn how to get to Puerto Escondido from Oaxaca City by plane? Let’s get to it!

Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Flight

small plane going from oaxaca to huatulco and oaxaca to puerto escondiod mexico

Wondering, Can you fly from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido? Yes, you can, and in fact, the Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido direct flight is the most convenient, quickest, and most expensive option.

Two companies have flights from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido, AeroTucan  and  AeroVega . Each company has just one flight per day — so don’t wait till the last minute to book your flight.

With both, you’ll take a 6-8 seater plane; if you’ve never been in a small plane before, watch this video to see if it seems comfortable.

From the airport, you can book private transportation to your Puerto Escondido hotel, rent a car in Puerto Escondido , or take a taxi.

⚠️ Note: There’s no Uber in Oaxaca City, no Uber in Puerto Escondido, and no Uber in Oaxaca state anywhere. There’s also no Lyft in Oaxaca.

Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flights

Aerotucan oaxaca to puerto escondido flight.

✈️ My Personal experience taking this flight

I took the AeroTucan Oaxaca flight to Puerto Escondido, and really enjoyed it. However, this is a small plane, and it’s a lot shakier than a large airplane.

If you have claustrophobia, or don’t handle turbulence well, you might want to opt for this private driver , or take the Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido ADO bus.

Is Aerotucan safe?

From my personal experience taking the AeroTucan Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flight, it was perfectly safe. The Aerotucan safety protocol was like any other airline.

🎫 How do I buy tickets for Aerotucan flights?

Aerotucan contact info.

• AeroTucan phone number: 1-800-640-4148 • AeroTucan local phone number: (+52) 951-502-0840

If you want to take the Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flight with AeroTúcan, you have to book in advance via phone or at the Oaxaca Airport.

⏳ Buy your tickets in advance

If you want to take the AeroTucan Puerto Escondido flight, you’ll want to get your ticket as far in advance of your flight as possible.

As there’s usually just one daily flight from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido, you’ll want to make sure you can travel on your preferred day.

✈️ AeroTucan Flight schedule

schedule for the flight from oaxaca to puerto escondido mexico

Have a look at the image above for the AeroTucan Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flight schedule.

This has been their schedule for some time now, but know they can change it at any time, so also double check the AeroTucan flight schedule online.

💸 How much are ticket for the Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido flight?

One way flights on AeroTúcan average about $3,000-3,500 pesos ($150-175 USD).

Yes, this is a lot more than most other options, but it’s also a lot more convenient as flights are only about 30-45 minutes, whereas the drive takes seven hours by car, and 10 hours by bus.

🤑 Oaxaca Travel Tips: AeroTucan offers a  15% discount  on all Thursday flights.

🧳 Do you have heavy luggage?

The final thing to keep in mind is luggage weight. You’re allowed  33 pounds (15 kg) on AeroTucan, which is about 20 pounds less than larger airlines allow.

My luggage was over, and I ended up with a surprise $50 USD fee. Other than that, I loved the flight and will take it again.

AeroVega Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Flight

AeroVega is owned and operated by the pilot, Juan Carlos Vega. Much like with AeroTucan, he operates a small plane with just six seats in total.

If you’ve never been on a single-engine plane of this size, check out the YouTube video above of a real experience on this flight.

If it doesn’t seem like it’s for you, and you have the budget, consider hiring a driver and private car . If you’re traveling with a group, splitting this ends up costing about the same as the plane does.

You can also rent a car , or take the ADO bus to Puerto Escondido.

🎫 How do I book tickets for Aerovega flights?

Aerovega contact info.

• AeroVega phone number: (+44) 954-588-0062 • AeroVega local phone number: (+52) 951-516-4982 • AeroVega email: [email protected]

💸 How much are ticket for Aerovega flights?

The flight costs about $2,000-$2,500 pesos ($100-125 USD), which you will pay in cash (pesos), and book directly with Juan Vega.

While this may seem unconventional, I have met people who have flown with AeroVega, and it is a legit company — though there’s no website. Looking for Aerovega reviews? Head here .

AeroVega usually only offers one flight per day, so book as far in advance as you can by calling or emailing the Captain Juan Vega using his contact information above.

If you’re unable to reach him (I was), you can always book with AeroTucan instead.

Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido Drive (Rental Car)

  • Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido distance: About 160 miles (258 km)
  • Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido driving time: About 7-8 hours
  • For a complete guide, head to Renting A Car in Oaxaca Mexico: Everything You Need to Know

The drive from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido Mexico is beautiful , but do consider a midsize rental car or SUV. You’ll be on a very curvy mountain road with lots of switchback turns, that’s frankly not well maintained in all areas.

As mentioned, this is a bumpy and curvy road (see map image below), which is notoriously bad for anyone prone to carsickness and/or motion sickness.

If you don’t do so well in cars on road trips, remember to pack your non-drowsy Dramamine , or whatever helps you on the road. 🚨 Note: Make sure it’s the non-drowsy version, or you’ll pass out!

What’s the best place for Oaxaca car rentals?

For the best selection, there are several Oaxaca Airport car rental companies to choose from. 🤔 Wondering, What’s the Oaxaca Airport code? It’s OAX.

Head to Discover Cars and see what’s available, as sometimes you’ll get a better deal on your car rental in Oaxaca in the Centro Historico or Reforma neighborhoods, versus the airport.

🚙💨 I personally use Discover Cars whenever I rent a car in Mexico . I also opt for their full coverage insurance, which is the cheapest I’ve found at only about $10 USD per day!

Note: You are legally required to have Mexico driving insurance when renting a car in Oaxaca.
