Our trip to Taormina, Sicily was perfectly executed with the assistance of Simona and her crew at Tripping Sicily. Our 7 day adventure with our knowledgable guides toured us through Taormina where we learned of the Roman Theater, Church Santa Caterina, Piazza Belvedere and Piazza Duomo. We hiked up to the summit of Mt. Etna and learned of the volcanos history with our experienced guide Roberto. We traveled to Catania and experienced the fish markets and local flavors in the surrounding street food and finished at Acitrezza. Also toured the small town of Savoca, where they filmed the wedding and bar scene from the Godfather movie. My favorite event was the Sicilian cooking class we enjoyed at a private Villa. All of this and more was all perfectly executed through Tripping Sicily. They coordinated the transports, tour guides, and touring events perfectly. Thank you...for the great memories.

During this relaxing tour, take a sea voyage to Grotta Azzurra, Capo Taormina, Grotta del Giorno, and the bays of Mazzaro and Mermaids.

At Grotta Azzurra, you will go inside with the boat to explore this cave with stunning light reflections creating a contrasting blue pool against the walls of the ancient cave. This is a really beautiful sight that you will want to capture!

This half-day tour provides the perfect opportunity for those with a bit of diving experience to explore the beautiful bays and seabeds that surround Taormina. 

You will be collected from your hotel in Taormina and transported to the boarding point where you will meet your certified scuba guide who you will spend the 4 hours with.

On the way to the diving point, enjoy a relaxing boat ride and enjoy the scenery of Isola Bella and Grotta Azzurra . When you arrive at the best spot for diving, get kitted out in full scuba gear and receive a briefing from the guide about the various surrounding diving spots.

Then its time to dive under the turquoise blue sea and follow your guide as they show you where to spot the plethora of fish and sea life.

ITINERARY: Enjoy a 3 hours boat tour visiting Isola Bella, the bays of Taormina and the sea caves along the coastline with two stops to swim or snorkel admiring the seabed, corals and starfish .

Meet and greet your Driver directly at your hotel in Taormina  area and transfer to the port to start your private boat tour in the early afternoon or at sunset (please select time of departure at booking time). Once on board our comfortable boat, admire the fascinating town of Taormina from a different point of view, and relax for approximately 3 hours while the English speaking Captain will describe the coastline.

You will visit not only Isola Bella , one of the most renowned places in Taormina , defined as the Pearl of the Mediterranean, but the whole coast between Capo Naxos and Mazzarò including Naxos Bay, the Grotta del Giorno (refuge for fishermen), Capo Taormina , the fascinating Grotta Azzurra with its colorful shades of blue and red corals, the Bay of Mazzarò , S. Nicola Bay and Spisone Bay.

Swim or snorkel  into the crystal clear waters in one of the most beautiful bays of Taormina and give a glance at the bottom filled with corals and starfish. Through this classic summer boat trip, Sicily Active will take you to  Isola Bella  marine park , inside the beautiful Blue Grotto of Taormina , and all the way to the crystal waters of the Mermaids bay, the ideal beach to enjoy some snorkeling. Along the excursion you will see the most iconic landmarks of Taormina coastline, the prickly pear rock, the lovers cave in the enchanting Giardini Naxos bay, and the bizzare cliff shaped by the elements into an Elephant. We will treat you to some paste di mandorla (Almonds desert)  and cool drinks; all served on a floating table . Escursion Details

Our two-hour boat excursion departure takes place from Giardini Naxos port. You will sail in the crystal water of  Capo Taormina  and Naxos bay, hosting the lovers cave.  We will than proceed towards the pricly pear rock and  Isola Bella's marine reserve, housing the stunning  Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto). Here We stop to treat you to an aperitif while you can enjoy a swim in the Sicilian sea's turquoise water. The next stage of this boat trip will take you to Mazzaro bay , where you can see the prettiest beach along the coast of Taormina and one of Italy's most lovely landscapes. Next, we will visit one of Giardini Naxos and Taormina's coastline hidden spots, the beautiful Mermaids bay where the elephant rock is located.   On the way back to the harbor, one of the best views of all Sicily awaits you; The mighty Mount Etna, the volcano towering over Giardini Naxos Bay, and the Hilltop town of Taormina.

Ferry Route from Malta to Sicily

Since Sicily is known for its international connections with some of Europe’s biggest ferry companies, you can travel to mainland Italy, the surrounding islands, North Africa via Tunisia, and of course, Malta.

Routes and Port Locations

The port location in Malta is located in Valletta (next to what’s referred to as the Valletta Waterfront), whilst the port in Sicily is in Pozzallo. The distance between the two islands is 57 nautical miles (105 km), with the ferry ride lasting approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes .

Although there are currently no direct ferries from Valletta to Catania , you can still get there easily if you’re interested in spending most of your time there. Prior to finalising your booking with Direct Ferries, all you need to do is add the bus transfer option from Pozzallo to Catania .

Ferry Timetable

The Malta Sicily ferry service operates daily. Generally speaking, ferries depart from Valletta as early as 5:00 am, while the last ferry from Pozzallo departs at 21:30.

With this in mind, be aware of possible cancellations in the event of rough weather during the winter months.

As opposed to the pre-planned stops of a guided tour, this option will allow you to see more of the island’s top sights and perhaps go off the beaten track to discover some hidden gems.

Travelling with a personal car

Upon boarding the ferry from the Malta port, the staff will carry out your check-in whilst you’re still behind the wheel.

Once you arrive in Sicily, you will be asked to head to the garage before you need to head to the garage before the other passengers disembark.

Renting a car from Malta

If you do not have a car, renting one from Malta is possible; however, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind.

How to Choose the Right Tour Group

Group size, participants’ age range, style of travel and budget are among the factors you should consider when selecting an itinerary.

Tour companies that offer multiday trips arrange most everything for you: lodging, sightseeing, food and transportation. But group size, style of travel and budget are among the considerations travelers should assess before picking a tour. Read on for tips.

Big group or small

Start your research by thinking about how many people you want to travel with and what your tolerance is for the social demands dictated by group size.

Smaller groups can move more nimbly and possibly see more. But they can also be more intensely social as you spend a great deal of time with the same people touring and dining.

Larger groups tend to require more time to get around, but they can also offer more social variety — for example, you can change up your lunch partners more easily.

“Large groups offer anonymity, allowing travelers to choose their level of interaction,” said Deborah Miller, a travel adviser and the owner of Edge of Wonder Travels Unlimited in San Francisco. “Conversely, smaller groups foster intimacy among travelers, guides and the destination itself.”

Look for age-appropriate trips

Think about the demographics of your travel party and consider matching that to a tour company.

Operators often segment their trips by age under the assumption that similarly aged people have more in common or prefer the same pace. Road Scholar , for example, caters to an intellectually curious 50-plus crowd.

On the other end of the spectrum, G Adventures offers a category of trips for “18-to-thirtysomethings” and Intrepid Travel has trips for 18-to-35-year-olds.

With their inherent age spans, families can be a tough demographic to fit into larger group departures, which is why companies tend to break up family offerings by age group.

The active tour company Backroads has three age segments for families, including trips for those with children 4 to 19, those with older teens and younger adults into their 20s, and those with children in their 20s and beyond.

“By definition, that creates somewhat of an age segmentation among parents, too,” said Tom Hale, the founder, president and chief executive of Backroads.

Go general or specific

A popular option for first-timers, a general tour will hit the highlights of a destination, like the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre in Paris or major sites in Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan.

Beyond the general approach, alternatives abound based on themes, styles of travel or hobbies.

Themed trips include a culinary tour of Sicily , a deep dive into literary England , Europe’s World War II battlefields and how women live in India .

In addition to topics, trips often revolve around the means of travel, such as going by train , on foot or by boat (a category that can be further segmented by size, from a cruise ship to a barge or a kayak ).

Tours can also allow you to pursue an interest like swimming or knitting in a unique destination.

Analyze tour inclusions

Once you determine where and how you want to go, prices will range from budget to luxury.

“For travelers on a budget, large group tours tend to be the best fit because it’s a great way to see major attractions at a lower price point,” said Cheyenne Schriefer, a travel adviser and the owner of All Travel Matters in Golden Valley, N.D.

But not all tours are built the same. To compare them, consider what they include.

For example, G Adventures has a 10-day hiking trip in Switzerland from $1,799 a person and a 10-day hiking trip in Portugal for $4,499. The latter is billed as a luxury trip, so the accommodations are pricier, but it also includes most meals, transfers and activities. The Swiss tour offers more basic lodgings, transfers, optional activities available for a fee, and fewer meals.

“Sometimes fewer inclusions are better than more,” said Pauline Frommer, co-president of Frommer Media, which publishes Frommer’s guidebooks . She pointed out that restaurants that can accommodate busloads probably don’t attract local traffic and that independent sightseeing allows you to “wander through local neighborhoods to get the feel of local life.”

Expertise of the guide or tour leader can also alter the price and the experience. You can expect to pay more for a tour led by a specialist, such as an Egyptologist guiding a group along the Nile.

Gauge your level of independence

Do you prefer to follow a strict schedule that relieves you from having to find, say, a restaurant for dinner? Or do you appreciate some structure — like knowing your hotel reservations are covered — but also want free time to explore independently?

Tour companies run the gamut. Before booking, read the itineraries carefully to find out if the schedule is tight or loose. If that is not clear, call the company to ask.

For truly independent travelers, self-guided tours offered by companies such as Inntravel , Exodus Adventure Travels and Macs Adventure make your ground arrangements and provide an itinerary to follow. Popular in Europe, these itineraries tend to be inn-to-inn walking or cycling trips that include luggage transfers.

“Self-guided travelers are independent but love the support of having a trip arranged for them, and they don’t want to hike with a big backpack anymore,” said Jasper Verlaan, the U.S. sales director for Macs Adventure.

Ask for recommendations

If you’re still unsure about putting down a deposit once you’ve done your research, ask the tour company if you may speak to a past client.

“Ask for references,” said Lynn Cutler, the senior vice president of travel for Smithsonian Enterprises, which runs the tour company Smithsonian Journeys . “We’ll find them a traveler who has done this trip in the past and put them in touch.”
