Screamfeeder Brisbane, Australia

Screamfeeder are a 3 piece noisy pop / indie rock band from Brisbane Australia. Lovers of loud and beautiful music since the day they were each conceived, they have been compared to all the greats; Husker Du, The Jam, GBV and The Who. Comparisons aside they rock in their own unique / sublime / chaotic way. Contradictions and dualities abound within Screamfeeder, and therein lies their beauty ...   more

After five years of waiting, Brisbane alt-rock icons Screamfeeder have returned with their triumphant new album,  Five Rooms .

Ever since they first formed back in the middle of 1991, Screamfeeder have been a force to be reckoned with. Capturing the attention of Aussie rock-lovers throughout the early ’90s, it was the likes of 1996’s  Kitten Licks  that helped the group reach a wider fame, with the Screamfeeder name rarely absent from stages or lineups around the country in the coming years.

In February, the group announced that their first record since 2017’s  Pop Guilt would be arriving in May. Dubbed  Five Rooms , it’s Screamfeeder at their very best, and is set to be paired with a national tour in support of the record this June.

As the band explain, though it’s been 30 years since Screamfeeder released their debut album,  Flour , it feels almost as though no time has passed at all, with the group hungry as ever to venture into the future and keep doing what it is that they love.

“Honestly it’s surprising and not surprising at the same time,” bassist and vocalist Kellie Lloyd explains of the record’s timely arrival. “Time feels like it doesn’t exist anymore anyway.

“I think it might take some time to feel like everything is normal again after the last few years, but I can’t wait to see live music return to full capacity and feel safe and free again.”

With the new record out in the world today, Screamfeeder’s Kellie Lloyd and Tim Steward have given us a rundown of each of the tracks on  Five Rooms , explaining the album went from being nothing but an idea in their minds, to how they crafted one of their best releases to date in the midst of COVID.

The title comes from the need to tie the whole album together. Tim and I were not writing in the same rooms, we were in lockdown for some of the time, there was no linking themes that we shared. We tried for geographical significance like a point between our houses, a street name, a mountain. Nothing stuck. The songs were written separately in our different rooms. We started to practice them in different practice rooms to bang them into shape. The connecting part of the story is the rooms. We were going between our own music rooms, two practice rooms and the studio. The album was created in five rooms. – Kellie

“Day Crew” This was the last song we wrote for the album; it ties together a number of themes and phrases from the rest of the record. It was hard to convince the others to take on yet another song, Dean learned it and recorded the drums in half an hour. Written about a fast-food worker, who gets stuck hanging out with people from a different shift, and starts feeling their life is on endless pause. Being in 2021 this tied in with COVID/isolation themes as well. – Tim

“Don’t Get Me Started” This song first had a chorus with the title in it and it got dropped. But don’t let that be a reason not to use such a great title! This song was written really quickly, goofing off on GarageBand, and found its way into the practice room, it got longer, shorter, longer, weirder…. And back to closer to how it was written on the demo. Mostly stream of conscious lyrics about social media, needing to be fascinated constantly, lost in a world in a phone or a screen. Sometimes we just need to look away, which ties in nicely with a Trump reference about looking into the sun. – Kellie

“No Past Tense” I wrote most this late at night after coming home drunk, singing and playing quietly into my phone. I’d done a couple of albums focusing on memory and nostalgia, and I wanted to turn a corner and get away from that. There’s only so much reminiscing you can do before it gets boring. Also a song with no parts that come back and repeat, they all only happen one time around. – Tim

“Late to The Party” I wrote this song in a few different ways, different tunings, different lyrics, but this one was fleshed out. In my mind I was imagining a Lana Del Rey meets PJ Harvey, half-lethargic, half-menacing kind of song. The song is a like a reflection on how we are told to be a modern person in the world –  remain aloof, always be in control, everyone is watching, be everything but don’t be too good at anything, etc. Again, a comment on social media and how everyone is watching and “everybody cares”. – Kellie

“Outers” The first song written for the record. Intentionally simple and easy to understand. I hadn’t written anything for a while and I needed to finish a song without it being too difficult. Boy/girl/regret themes, which everyone knows, probably too well. – Tim

“Campfire” This song pretty much has three lines, the rest of them just join the dots. A simple song, about being a kid and feeling lost. – Tim

“Everything is Temporary” A little riff recorded on my phone turned into this song, it went through a few different versions in the practice room. No real story behind this song, the lyrics kind of fell into place, it would characterise the general feeling of constantly dealing with change and randomness and not being able to put your finger on it. The feeling of strangeness each day when the whole country ground to a halt, waking up each day, just not knowing how to explain how we felt. – Kellie

“Deirdre” I wanted this to sound like Urge Overkill but I don’t have the voice for it. My songs are what-you-see-is-what-you-get, you understand the meaning right away, or they mean nothing. The song got trimmed right down, the middle section was originally much longer and we explored the groove for a while. But we’re not that kind of band – on record anyway. – Tim

“Break It Clean” Whilst writing the album Tim and I would give each other a task to write a song – certain chords, slow tempo, a certain tuning, a theme or a word, just some rules to write a song – in two hours. Not sure what the brief was for this song, but this is the result. Lyrically I had taken inspiration from Ben Ely’s character in his song “Aussie Road Movie”, less lyrically brutal than Ben’s song but observes those feelings of having to cut your losses, leaving town, hoping everyone will forget you and the sense of razing everything to ground. Ben’s song is full of heat and desperation, but this take is full of rain and monotonous self flagellation. Also starts with my favourite kind of weird-timing start. – Kellie

“How We Pay” About watching the natural world disappear, and regretting it, and trying to understand how we let it happen, after it’s too late. This song ended up with a lot of parts in a short space, it was hard to mix, to decide which part’s style should dictate the others. When you hear us play it, it makes more sense. – Tim

“Who Are We to Do This to Each Other?” Another simple, transparent song, written after being inspired by Fountains of Wayne’s chords and melodies. A band I only discovered after the songwriter Adam Schlesinger died in 2021 from Covid-related complications. A sad circumstance under which to discover a band, but he gave me something in my rudimentary grasp of how music works. – Tim

“Try to Find Us” This song ruminates on male fragility/privilege and how it’s perpetuated, “ who holds the hand that coddles the son, are they the bullet or the gun ?”. Who is the problem? Part nature/nurture question, part observation that it’s systemic, are we in peak patriarchy? Are the constructions going to come undone? What is the lesson?  It’s too big a concept for a single song, but this is a question that is worth asking. – Kellie

Screamfeeder: Five Rooms tour

screamfeeder tour

25 June 2022 – The Princess Theatre Brisbane – words and pictures by Bec Harbour

It was always going to be a bit like a family reunion when Screamfeeder played their hometown of Brisbane. Add to that the beautifully restored Princess Theatre as venue, Adalita and local band Mouse as supports, and a bunch of punters who were so excited to see Screamfeeder play a headline gig AND play music both old favourites and from the new album, it really did feel like a big party of friends on Friday night.

Mouse kicked off the evening with their grunge inflected set, not letting a sick singer get in the way of putting on a really great performance. Guitarist Kate gamely stepped up and did vocal duties for the evening. Beginning their set with ‘Exist in Me’ and running through ‘Puck’ and ‘Anyone in There?’, they rounded off their set with ‘Kill Yr Step Dad’ (the missing O and U an homage to Sonic Youth perhaps?).

Adalita came on stage to cheers from the audience. Head down, looking very contained without her usual crew of rockers (Magic Dirt) behind her, she soon warmed up and told the crowd how awesome it has been to tour with Screamfeeder and how much she loved Mouse. Adalita went through her back catalogue of solo work including ‘Trust is Rust’, ‘I Want your Love’ and ‘Hot Air’. Adalita let the crowd know that she also had “some 7-inch thingy’s” at the merch stand and to come and grab one.

Next up was Screamfeeder. Fresh off playing around Australia to promote their latest album,  Five Rooms , supporting Regurgitator’s 25 th  anniversary of Tu Plang (with their own 25 th  anniversary for their album Kitten Licks at the same time) and playing the Spring Loaded Festivals around Australia, they returned to Brisbane as their final stop (until they run off to another Spring Loaded soon).

‘Late to the Party’ from  Five Rooms  kicked off the set (party?) to cheers of appreciation from the crowd segueing into ‘Above the Dove’, then we got ‘Day Crew’. I think it was at this point that Kellie Lloyd said to the crowd that they were still learning the songs off the new album, so bear with them.

With a set that included ‘Don’t Get Me Started’ and ‘Deirdre’ from the new album and a run through of highlights from their discography, including ‘Dart’, ‘Hi C’s’ and ‘Fingers and Toes’, they introduced Ben Ely, from Regurgitator to play bass for a bit, while Kellie moved over to keys and Tim took a break from guitar to do just vocals.

At the end of their set they introduced Adalita back onstage, with Kellie commenting that she they didn’t think they’d be able to do this song again with out Adalita. They launched into ‘Wrote You Off’ with Adalita belting out the vocals.

The set ended and the band went off stage – there were calls for more. The band came back onstage, Kellie said that they normally don’t do encores as their sets were usually so long but since the crowd asked for more and the music didn’t come on or the lights, they’d do another.

Playing on home turf, playing to a crowd that was filled with fans and friends, Screamfeeder were in their element, relaxed and interacting with the crowd who were singing along like it was a karaoke night. With their latest album Five Rooms under their belt, a new book with all their tour photos over the years, it felt like just one room with all of us in it.

Bluebottle kiss & Screamfeeder Tour 2024

Bluebottle kiss & Screamfeeder Tour 2024

Buy tickets, you need to be 18+ to attend this event, event details.

Two legendary Australian rock bands are playing three special shows in November 2024.

Bluebottle Kiss formed in Sydney in 1993, a turbulent time in the Australian independent music scene. They sound only like themselves: a strikingly volatile unit harnessing sweetness and ferocity, conjuring tales of personal vulnerability and a kind of warped Australiana. The recent live album ‘ Bluebottle Kiss: Never Leave Town – Live in Sydney’ captures the rich hues, rough edges, sensitivity, menace and vitality of Bluebottle Kiss as they perform some of their most accomplished material to a packed house.

Love As Fiction, the boutique re-issue label out of Perth behind the Never Leave Town live album will also be re-releasing Bluebottle Kiss’ second album —  1996s’ ‘ Fear of Girls ’ on double gatefold vinyl. Produced by the legendary Seattle based Jack Endino (Mark Lanegan, Nirvana, Afghan Whigs et al), ‘ Fear of Girls ’ is a sprawling, epic mix of the group’s ambitious take on noise-rock, folk, indie and psychedelia. 28 years later the new vinyl version is split over four sides, and has been lovingly remastered by Jack Endino. To celebrate, Bluebottle Kiss will once again reconvene for three shows across three states with the iconic Screamfeeder.

Screamfeeder needs no introduction, but here goes! Lovers of loud and beautiful music since they were each conceived, they have been compared to all the greats; Husker Du, The Jam, The Replacements and The Who.

Contradictions and dualities abound within Screamfeeder, and therein lies their beauty. They are the band you grew up with, whose songs are imprinted into the DNA of every music-lover who came of age in the 90 ’ s and 00 ’ s. A band of eternally youthful fuzz-pop darlings who, however improbably, have continued to play together for over thirty years and somehow have not only gotten better, but have become even more loved. A band that combines loud with beautiful, intense with joyous, chaotic with precise and pulls it all together in a way that very few acts ever manage. After more than three decades, they are still releasing vital and engaging music, as 2022’s ‘ Five Rooms ’ album proved.

Our tour is cancelled

We’re super sorry to have to announce that we’re cancelling all our interstate tour dates in September and October. With borders closed between states, it’s just not possible to come and play for you.

We are so disappointed. It breaks our hearts to have to cancel a national tour for the second time.

Assuming we are allowed, we’ll still play the Zoo show in Brisbane. All other shows – please contact you ticket issuer for a refund (Oztix or Moshtix).

Thank you to all the bands who agreed to play with us, we’ll hit you up next time! Huge thanks to our management Alien Lane and booking agent Raida Artists, and to Jane and Scott from Sound As Ever for their support.

We’re still busy: our new album is being mixed – we’re thrilled with how it’s turned out. There’s a podcast, a book and a documentary in the works.

It’s no compensation for not seeing you.. it’s been too long, we’ll get there eventually. In the meantime – get vaccinated, look after yourselves and your friends and family, and know that are so grateful to everyone who bought a ticket, a T-shirt or a record. We’ll give it another try in 2022.
