Just the fact that i went from Geneva to Baden to watch these guys already says alot. Such an amazing band, no gimmicks, no bs, just headbanging, neck sore, shirt sweating music !!! The Portal of I was such a great opener but they have really improved their music writing and the tracks on URN are such live music worthy, the crowd was completely in their hands from the beginning. The "duel" between Benji and Tim in Intra Venus was magic. Tim's voice contrasting with Xen's was everything and more. Martino's bass is like being in a thunderstorm with birds singing, from pure power to such finesse. And Benji and Matt's guitars are the perfect complement to all this, along with Dan's drums that are just unstopable. All in all, best concert i've seen in years, and i have been in quite a few.

Incredible band and even more so live! Tim Charles (clean vocalist and violinist) has such an amazing stage presence and an infectious energy and clearly loves to connect with the audience. Martino Garattoni (bassist) absolutely killed it, the bass solo in “Devour Me, Colossus” was... perfect. I’ve always loved it but to see it live was just a privilege.

The venue had amazing acoustics and everything sounded just as it did on the albums, but with that bone rattling sound that you can only get in a live setting.

This was the first time I had seen them live and it will certainly not be the last. I have loved this band for a while, but seeing them live has cemented a place for them in my heart forever now.

These guys are better every time. I've seen them 3 times now in NYC (they were the headliners for 2 of the 3). This most recent one was in a very small, intimate venue, which makes the show even better.

They have an amazing stage presence. Every member of the band really loves what they do. They're super-engaged with the audience and you can tell that they're so happy to see everyone that came out for their show.

Particularly this time around, I noticed that Tim's vocals sound better than ever. The new bassist (who may or may not be a permanent band member) meshes perfectly with the rest of the band and puts on a great show, too.

I will go out to see these guys every time they're in town.

A fantastic show. I saw them once before here, back in January. Xenoyr (growl vocals) was sick at the time, but we got the pleasant surprise of hearing Tim Charles' wife play violin then instead.

This time Xenoyr was back in full action and did an amazing job, as did everyone else.

Can't praise them enough, this band is one of my all-time favorite progressive metal bands. The blend between fast paced guitars, drums, violin, growls and clean vocals all at once, all coming together in a beautiful harmonic melody is a sight to behold.

Will gladly see them again with every chance I get.

I loved very much the concert! As well the music, but the anthagonistic appearance of the voices, sophisticated theatral presentation through simplicity, though and gentle, very beautiful feelings, thank you guys, you are awesome. I must admit you are my 13 years old son favourite band(that boy, your t shirt, youngest audience), I myself am opethian, but believe me,I came to see you from Cluj, România, 500 km, driving back home the night and I don't regret!! I will listen to your music more and can't wait to see you live again! don't stop please, you are very very very good

This guys are amazing! They live performance is FLAWLESS and the sound was very well balanced so it was not overwhelming.

They played songs from both Portal of I and Citadel so it was great for both the new fans and the not so new. At the end of the show as always, the whole band was on the merchandise stand to greet the fans and sign stuff.

These guys deserve a lot more attention, so make sure to spread the word and bring people over to their shows, they will not regret it!!

Amazing show! Ne Obliviscaris execute flawlessly both the powerful technical prog/black parts and the mellower atmospheric excerpts with the violin. So much energy, it's obvious they enjoy what they're doing! Highly recommended, I have very high expectations from this band!

I saw them on the 2016 tour supporting Enslaved, which was quite a good fit, as opposed to Cradle of Filth last year.

Great Show !!!!!!!! Ne Obliviscaris never seem to fail us. They always Rock out. This was my third show seeing Ne Obliviscaris , After seeing them open for Cradle of Filth I was hooked on there sound and energy. Tim Charles with his clean vocals and beautiful stringing violin and Xenoyr with his growing vocals makes this band one of a kind. Check them out! You will not be sorry.

Despite the fact that I had second thoughts, due to the band releasing IMO a very similar album to their previous efforts, I was very pleasantly surprised to see how good they are live! Good connection with the audience, technically amazing and a lot of energy. Don't miss them!

The show was just ridiculously good. They were fantastic.

The music they make is excellent, but more than this, their stage presence is fantastic. Valhalla's stage is tiny, but they made great use of their space. Better live than recorded.

Drum tracking for Exul, the fourth long-player from Australian extreme progressive metallers NE OBLIVISCARIS, started in March 2020. There is an ominous tone to that date: March 2020. The pandemic demarcation line. That month, Daniel Presland laid down his drums in Nashville, Tennessee, with American producer Mark Lewis. As flight cancellations increased and borders shuttered, Presland made it home literally hours before Australia closed theirs. Lewis, guitarist Benjamin Baret and bassist Martino Garattoni weren't as lucky. They were due to land in Australia in the days that followed to continue tracking, but were forced to remain overeseas indefinitely. With recording studios shuttered throughout Melbourne, a slow, tedious, life-altering two-year grind to complete Exul ensued for NE OBLIVISCARIS.

What should have been the continued upward swing after 2017's critically acclaimed Urn turned into the most fraught moment of NE OBLIVISCARIS's career. Clean vocalist and violinist Tim Charles says the period "came close to breaking us completely." It was a time filled with death, relationships breaking down, despair and financial loss. Presland, NE OBLIVISCARIS's drummer since 2005, amicably parted ways in early 2022, throwing yet another wrench into the band's plans.

There are, however, happy accidents scattered throughout the creation of Exul. The extra, unexpected downtime allowed the band to fine-tune and even re-write parts previously set in stone before the pandemic. Charles's violin solo at the end of "Graal" is a prime example: His original idea wasn't fully realized until he revisited the song in early 2021 and promptly came up with a new part. It was a classic "a-ha" moment that improved the song.

"Getting an opportunity to have a song mostly done for a year or so and then go back to it, find what you loved about it the first time and maybe even improve it in some ways was a nice silver lining from all the delays," says Charles. "I think because we had so many delays that were out of our control, we were even more determined to take our time to make sure when the time came to record and to mix, that we ensured it was the absolute best it could be in every way."

Seven additional studios and three more countries later, Exul was finally mixed and mastered in July 2022.

The album personifies NE OBLIVISCARIS's distinctive, boundary-pushing ethos. The band's trademark blend of emotion and beauty is as towering as ever, if not even more compelling, particularly how Charles's violin lines carefully weave their way around Baret and fellow guitarist Matt Klavins' riffing. The duality of Charles's clean vocals and Xenoyr's growls remains the narrative anchor, elevating songs that emanate sophistication and are a masterclass in composition.

"Our approach is always the same," says Charles, "which is essentially to just write and see what comes out. Exul definitely had its challenges during the songwriting process. Part of the beauty of how our music comes together is that we are quite different individuals bringing an array of ideas together. From there, we work out how to combine them into something that is seamless and beautiful to us. We were determined to make this our best and most complete album yet, which definitely resulted in it taking longer. But we are so proud of this album and it's exciting to finally share it with the world."

The album's centerpiece is the two-part "Misericorde I ' As the Flesh Fails" and "Misericorde ' Anatomy of Quiescence." (A NE OBLIVISCARIS album is not complete without a multi-part epic!) According to Charles, Part II began by taking a song they thought was finished (Pt I) and asking, "What if after that!?" The band then wrote a section that took the piece in a new direction and what was a 7 minute song, became an almost 17 minute 2 part epic.

"The bulk of Part I was written more so by Benji and Martino," notes Charles. "You can hear the very guitar-driven approach present throughout that track. Part II, by contrast, was written more so by myself in collaboration with others and the emphasis changes more towards expansive solos and slow-developing sections that build towards the epic finale. These two tracks are a great example of how it's the combination of our different strengths as songwriters spread across an album that results in the sound that is 'NE OBLIVISCARIS'."

Charles's violin parts, whether on "Misericorde II," "Equus" or "Suspyre," exude confidence. The instrument has always been central to the band's sound. On Exul, Charles's violin playing is taken to another level. "I think that over the years, in regards to how my violin interacts within NeO's music, I've simply continued to add more strings to my bow, so to speak," he says. "With 'Exul,' I definitely explored even further the use of layers of violin and viola parts to create a more textured feel compared to other albums. 'Mesericorde II' was definitely a bit of a breakthrough song for me, where I felt I could utilize the strings in a way that hadn't been done in NeO's music before. In the end, whatever serves the song best is always the aim and having more ways of creating music makes it easier to serve the song."

The Exul album title came to Xen when he was summing up the album's feeling musically and lyrically. Coincidentally, it matched the experience of most people during the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "I think everyone at some point has felt at odds with the world around them, felt alone, cast out, or misunderstood," says Xen. "Exul felt right to use in a broader sense and as a lone word, for we each have our own history and a story of exile.

"Overall, there's a darker core to this album, perhaps more ominous than previous releases," he continues. "However abstract the lyrics are, they involve some form of unwanted departure - all journeys into torment, passion, longing and even despair. They touch on the process of physical and psychological destruction that comes from that sense or reality of being exiled, whether forced from one's land, ostracised from a community, shunned by a religion, or even simply being treated differently for being who they are."

Touring will factor heavily into NE OBLIVISCARIS's 2023 plans. The band will embark on headlining tours worldwide that will hit new territories. As luck would have it, the return to live show activity will coincide with the release of Exul and the band's 20th anniversary. As one of Australia's leading extreme metal exports, there is a distinct sense of gratitude from Charles and his bandmates. They're looking forward to sharing it with fans when they resume touring.

"Simply getting the opportunity to perform music that we've written on stages around the world to people that genuinely love and connect with it," finishes Charles when talking about NE OBLIVISCARIS's 20-year journey. "There is something incredibly special about the energy that exists between an artist and audience at a concert and it's an honor to get the opportunity to spend 2023 connecting with people in that way once more."

Australian progressive metal band Ne Obliviscaris embarks on a 2024 United Kingdom and European tour, performing their acclaimed albums ‘Exul’ and ‘Citadel’ in full, marking the 10th anniversary of ‘Citadel’ and celebrating the success of ‘Exul.’

Australian progressive metal band Ne Obliviscaris has etched its place in the annals of modern metal with a distinctive sound that melds diverse musical influences. Since its formation in 2003, the band has captivated audiences with a fusion of progressive, black, and death metal, enriched by classical, jazz, and avant-garde elements.

Ne Obliviscaris’s unique sound and innovative approach have made them a standout act in the metal scene. Their music is characterized by the seamless integration of diverse genres, including progressive, black, and death metal, enriched by elements of classical music, jazz, and avant-garde styles. This fusion creates a rich, multi-layered auditory experience that appeals to both metal purists and those with broader musical tastes. The band’s willingness to experiment and push the boundaries of conventional metal has garnered them a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim, positioning them as trailblazers within the genre. Their intricate compositions and emotionally charged performances are a testament to their artistic vision and technical prowess, making each album release and live performance a significant event in the metal community.

Ne Obliviscaris emerged in the fertile metal scene of Melbourne, Australia, a city renowned for its vibrant and eclectic music culture. The band’s inception can be traced back to 2003 when violinist and vocalist Tim Charles and guitarist Benjamin Baret decided to create a project that transcended conventional metal boundaries. They were soon joined by Xenoyr, whose harsh vocal style would become a signature element of the band’s sound. The initial lineup was completed with the addition of Brendan “Cygnus” Brown on bass, Matt Klavins on guitar, and Dan Presland on drums.

From the outset, Ne Obliviscaris set themselves apart with their ambition to blend seemingly disparate musical genres. Their early compositions were marked by a complexity that challenged listeners, intertwining intricate melodies with brutal riffs and dynamic shifts in tempo and mood. The release of their 2007 demo, ‘The Aurora Veil,’ showcased their potential and laid the groundwork for their future endeavors.

‘The Aurora Veil’: A Prelude to Greatness

‘The Aurora Veil’ served as a crucial stepping stone for Ne Obliviscaris, encapsulating their nascent sound and artistic vision. The demo’s three tracks—‘Tapestry of the Starless Abstract,’ ‘Forget Not,’ and ‘As Icicles Fall’—exhibited a sophisticated interplay between Charles’s melodic violin lines and Xenoyr’s guttural growls. This juxtaposition created a unique auditory experience that set them apart from their contemporaries.

Critics and fans alike were quick to recognize the band’s potential. Reviews praised the demo for its technical prowess and emotional depth. Despite its rough production quality, ‘The Aurora Veil’ demonstrated a level of musicianship and compositional skill that belied the band’s relative inexperience. This early acclaim was instrumental in building a dedicated fan base and securing opportunities for live performances.

Ascending to Prominence: ‘Portal of I’

The release of Ne Obliviscaris’s debut album, ‘ Portal of I ,’ in 2012 marked a significant milestone in their career. The album culminated nearly a decade of creative evolution, showcasing the band’s matured sound and refined technical abilities. ‘Portal of I’ received widespread acclaim for its ambitious scope, blending progressive metal with elements of classical music, jazz, and even flamenco.

Tracks like ‘And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope’ and ‘Of Petrichor Weaves Black Noise’ exemplified the band’s innovative approach to composition. The interplay between Charles’s clean vocals and violin, Xenoyr’s harsh growls, and the intricate guitar work of Baret and Klavins created a rich, layered sound that was both complex and accessible. The album’s lyrical themes, often exploring existential and philosophical questions, added an additional layer of depth to the listening experience.

‘Portal of I’ was not just a critical success but also a commercial one. The album’s release was followed by extensive touring, which helped to cement Ne Obliviscaris’s reputation as a formidable live act. Their performances were noted for their intensity and precision, often described as a mesmerizing blend of technical skill and raw emotion.

In 2014, Ne Obliviscaris released their sophomore album, ‘Citadel,’ building on the success of their debut, ‘Portal of I.’ This album marked a significant expansion of their musical horizons, incorporating a broader array of influences and refining their sound. The result was a more cohesive and polished effort, reflecting the band’s growth and maturity.

‘Citadel’ is structured into three multi-part suites: ‘Painters of the Tempest,’ ‘Pyrrhic,’ and ‘Devour Me, Colossus.’ Each suite showcases the band’s talent for crafting extended compositions that are both intricate and engaging. The interplay between the different sections of each suite creates a narrative progression, inviting listeners on a journey through diverse musical landscapes.

The album opens with the suite ‘Painters of the Tempest,’ which is divided into three parts: ‘(Part I): Wyrmholes,’ ‘(Part II): Triptych Lux,’ and ‘(Part III): Reveries from the Stained Glass Womb.’ This suite exemplifies the band’s ability to blend various musical styles and influences, from the aggressive intensity of black metal to the intricate melodies of classical music. The suite’s structure creates a compelling narrative progression, drawing listeners into an immersive musical experience.

Following this, the second suite, ‘Pyrrhic,’ continues the exploration of musical diversity with its dynamic shifts and contrasting elements. The track ‘Pyrrhic: Parasitic’ stands out for its use of complex time signatures and intricate guitar work, creating a sense of tension and release that is both exhilarating and emotionally resonant.

The album concludes with the suite ‘Devour Me, Colossus,’ featuring some of the band’s most influential and emotive music. The suite’s closing track, ‘(Part I): Blackholes,’ is a tour de force of technical skill and emotional intensity, with soaring melodies and thunderous rhythms providing a fitting climax to the album.

Lyrically, ‘Citadel’ delves into deeply introspective themes, exploring questions of existence, identity, and the human condition. These themes are conveyed through poetic and often abstract lyrics, adding an additional layer of depth to the music. The band’s ability to express complex emotions and ideas through their lyrics and music is one of their defining characteristics, and ‘Citadel’ exemplifies this talent.

The production of ‘Citadel’ is another standout aspect of the album. Working with renowned producer Troy McCosker, the band achieved a crisp and polished sound that highlights their technical skill and attention to detail, creating an immersive and engaging listening experience.

‘Citadel’ received universal acclaim from critics, who praised its ambitious scope and meticulous craftsmanship. The album’s success solidified Ne Obliviscaris’s position as one of the leading bands in the progressive metal genre. The album is characterized by its intricate compositions, blending aggressive riffs with melodic passages, and creating a symphony of extremes that captivates listeners.

The opening track, ‘Equus,’ sets the tone for the album with its complex structure and dynamic shifts. The song begins with a haunting violin melody, gradually building in intensity as layers of guitars and drums are introduced. This progression creates a sense of anticipation, leading to an explosive climax that showcases the band’s technical skill and emotional depth.

Throughout ‘Exul,’ the band explores themes of existential angst, personal struggle, and the search for meaning. These themes are conveyed through poetic lyrics and powerful vocal performances, with Charles’s clean vocals starkly contrasting Xenoyr’s guttural growls. Drum tracking for “Exul,” the fourth long-player from Australian extreme progressive metallers  NE OBLIVISCARIS , started in March 2020. There is an ominous tone to that date: March 2020; the pandemic demarcation line. That month, Daniel Presland laid down his drums in Nashville, Tennessee, with American producer Mark Lewis . As flight cancellations increased and borders shuttered, Presland made it home literally hours before Australia closed theirs. Lewis , guitarist Benjamin Baret, and bassist Martino Garattoni weren’t as lucky. They were due to land in Australia in the days that followed to continue tracking but were forced to remain overseas indefinitely. With recording studios shuttered throughout Melbourne, a slow, tedious, life-altering two-year grind to complete “Exul” ensued for  NE OBLIVISCARIS .

What should have been the continued upward swing after 2017’s critically acclaimed “Urn” turned into the most fraught moment of  NE OBLIVISCARIS ’s career. Clean vocalist and violinist Tim Charles says the period “came close to breaking us completely.” It was a time filled with death, relationships breaking down, despair, and financial loss. Presland ,  NE OBLIVISCARIS ’s drummer since 2005, amicably parted ways in early 2022, throwing yet another wrench into the band’s plans.

There are, however, happy accidents scattered throughout the creation of “Exul.” The extra, unexpected downtime allowed the band to fine-tune and even re-write parts previously set in stone before the pandemic. Charles ’ violin solo at the end of “Graal” is a prime example: His original idea wasn’t fully realized until he revisited the song in early 2021 and promptly came up with a new part. It was a classic “a-ha” moment that improved the song.

“Getting an opportunity to have a song mostly done for a year or so and then go back to it, find what you loved about it the first time and maybe even improve it in some ways was a nice silver lining from all the delays,” says Charles . “I think because we had so many delays that were out of our control, we were even more determined to take our time to make sure when the time came to record and to mix, that we ensured it was the absolute best it could be in every way.”

Seven additional studios and three more countries later, “Exul” was finally mixed and mastered in July 2022.

The album personifies  NE OBLIVISCARIS ’s distinctive, boundary-pushing ethos. The band’s trademark blend of emotion and beauty is as towering as ever, if not even more compelling, particularly how Charles ’ violin lines carefully weave their way around Baret and fellow guitarist Matt Klavins ’ riffing. The duality of Charles ’ clean vocals and Xenoyr ’s growls remains the narrative anchor, elevating songs that emanate sophistication and are a masterclass in composition.

“Our approach is always the same,” says Charles , “which is essentially to just write and see what comes out. ‘Exul’ definitely had its challenges during the songwriting process. Part of the beauty of how our music comes together is that we are quite different individuals bringing an array of ideas together. From there, we work out how to combine them into something that is seamless and beautiful to us. We were determined to make this our best and most complete album yet, which definitely resulted in it taking longer. But we are so proud of this album and it’s exciting to finally share it with the world.”  The album’s centerpiece is the two-part “Misericorde I – As the Flesh Fails” and “Misericorde – Anatomy of Quiescence.” (A  NE OBLIVISCARIS  album is not complete without a multi-part epic!) According to Charles , Part II began by taking a song they thought was finished (Pt I) and asking, “What if after that…?” The band then wrote a section that took the piece in a new direction and what was a 7-minute song, became an almost 17-minute 2-part epic.

“The bulk of Part I was written more so by Benji and Martino,” notes Charles . “You can hear the very guitar-driven approach present throughout that track. Part II, by contrast, was written more so by myself in collaboration with others and the emphasis changes more towards expansive solos and slow-developing sections that build towards the epic finale. These two tracks are a great example of how it’s the combination of our different strengths as songwriters spread across an album that results in the sound that is ‘ NE OBLIVISCARIS ‘.”

Charles ’ violin parts, whether on “Misericorde II,” “Equus,” or “Suspyre,” exude confidence. The instrument has always been central to the band’s sound. On “Exul,” Charles ’ violin playing is taken to another level. “I think that over the years, in regards to how my violin interacts within NeO’s music, I’ve simply continued to add more strings to my bow, so to speak,” he says. “With ‘Exul,’ I definitely explored even further the use of layers of violin and viola parts to create a more textured feel compared to other albums. ‘Mesericorde II’ was definitely a bit of a breakthrough song for me, where I felt I could utilize the strings in a way that hadn’t been done in NeO ’s music before. In the end, whatever serves the song best is always the aim and having more ways of creating music makes it easier to serve the song.”

The “Exul” album title came to Xen when he was summing up the album’s feeling musically and lyrically. Coincidentally, it matched the experience of most people during the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “I think everyone at some point has felt at odds with the world around them, felt alone, cast out, or misunderstood,” says Xen. “’Exul’ felt right to use in a broader sense and as a lone word, for we each have our own history and a story of exile.

“Overall, there’s a darker core to this album, perhaps more ominous than previous releases,” he continues. “However abstract the lyrics are, they involve some form of unwanted departure — all journeys into torment, passion, longing and even despair. They touch on the process of physical and psychological destruction that comes from that sense or reality of being exiled, whether forced from one’s land, ostracised from a community, shunned by a religion, or even simply being treated differently for being who they are.”

Touring will factor heavily into  NE OBLIVISCARIS ’s 2023 plans. The band will embark on headlining tours worldwide that will hit new territories. As luck would have it, the return to live show activity will coincide with the release of “Exul” and the band’s 20th anniversary. As one of Australia’s leading extreme metal exports, there is a distinct sense of gratitude from Charles and his bandmates. They’re looking forward to sharing it with fans when they resume touring.

“Simply getting the opportunity to perform music that we’ve written on stages around the world to people that genuinely love and connect with it,” finishes Charles when talking about  NE OBLIVISCARIS ’s 20-year journey. “There is something incredibly special about the energy that exists between an artist and audience at a concert and it’s an honor to get the opportunity to spend 2023 connecting with people in that way once more.”
