Things to Do

Things to Do: Mahabaleshwar Tourism And Travel Guide

Village of books:

Bhilar, the little hamlet of strawberries is also a village of books. Visit the sleepy little village to browse through a plethora of books that appeal to touristy book worms and researchers!

If it’s adventure you seek, hike through the lush meadows and mountain peaks of Mahabaleshwar. Mount Olympia or Connaught Peak, the second highest peak on Mahabaleshwar is one of the best trekking destinations ever!

Sailing down the lake:

Things to do in Mahabaleshwar must include a cruise along the pristine cool Venna Lake, a popular touristy spot for an evening’s getaway. If sailing makes you hungry, buy a bag of strawberries or mulberries, carrots or corn from the shacks at the lake’s edge.

Horse rides:

River banks and some of the unexplored trails can be traversed on horseback. Horses and camel rides are a favourite mode of whiling away the time at Sunset Point, Echo Point and Venna Lake.

View from the peaks:

The peaks of the Sahyadri have strategically located places where you can spend ages gazing at the mist covered mountain summits, the wildflowers growing beneath your feet, the green countryside spread around the foothills and the rivers meandering along the forests.

Strawberry Picking:

Strawberries and mulberries are the finest fruits you’d find in Mahabaleshwar. Take time off to call on a farm to pick strawberries and learn a tip or two on growing broccoli, tomatoes or strawberries.

Lingmala Falls:

Lingmala Falls on the Mahabaleshwar to Pune road is a magnificent show put on by nature. If you’d love to sit on the wet rocks, with caution of course, as the rocks tend to be slippery, and let the water lap at your feet, head for the mini falls. For a more spectacular cascade, trek off further away to the main falls, which are not recommended for a swim but are so spectacular to watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Best season to visit Mahabaleshwar

Wondering about the best time to visit Mahabaleshwar to experience its drizzles and mist at best makes little sense as it can be visited throughout the year basically coming down to you and your choice of the season. Mahabaleshwar has primarily two seasons: summer and monsoon with the post-monsoon season being the cooler months, not colder. Notwithstanding, the ideal time to plan Mahabaleshwar is summer from March to June with an average temperature of 33 degree Celsius. The period from December to February is equally good to visit the scenic hill station with the mercury dipping down to around 20 degree Celsius. The monsoon months are a little tricky and different travellers have varying opinions on visiting Mahabaleshwar during monsoon. The months between July to September is when Mahabaleshwar receives heavy downpour with very low visibility due to mist covering the valleys and slippery roads may not be a good idea to drive. But depending on the traveller and what they want out of their trip Mahabaleshwar is visited by many adventurous souls during the heavy rains. It’s not every day that you get to capture the valleys in the deepest hue of green enveloped in mist.

Seasons in Mahabaleshwar

The best season to visit Mahabaleshwar is a tough choice between summer and cooler months but assuming the summertime is more crowded with hiked up prices for tourists, some people might choose the year-end months. There is a good chance of getting a good deal on hotels in Mahabaleshwar if you plan to visit in the winter months. Although the offseason in Mahabaleshwar when very few people visit the hill station is when it pours down hard and heavy, being the monsoon. This is the time when you are bound to get a good deal on hotels, transfers, food and everything else at slashed prices. But be wary, for a few places may be hard to access because of weather conditions.

December to February in Mahabaleshwar – Cool and Clement

There is no best month to visit Mahabaleshwar but if you want to plan your travel in a safe period then the favourable time is December to February. It’s when the outdoor activities can be best enjoyed like trekking or sightseeing several viewpoints in Mahabaleshwar. The humidity levels are low and the sun is not that strong – perfect for visiting the local attractions. Also if you are a berry lover, then a visit to the hill station is a must during the winter season. Besides, there won’t be a rush of tourists, so you can enjoy the place even better.

The time from March to June is the peak season in Mahabaleshwar. It’s when families from the nearby cities come rushing to the hill station for a respite from the sweltering heat. It is the most crowded time with tourists thronging to the scenic cliffs, lakes and viewpoints. This is also a good time to trek and you can get stunning views of the valleys and lakes from the top of some of the best trails. Walkthrough the local bazaar and pack some of the relishes and marmalades that Mahabaleshwar is known for. Also, try your hand at picking strawberries as around April, the strawberry festival is organised. Summer might be an expensive time to visit Mahabaleshwar because of the tourist rush but it has its own reasons for being so.

July to September in Mahabaleshwar – The Downpour

Walking past the skies sprayed with water, some of it settling on your skin with the most gentle of swoops, Mahabaleshwar during monsoon is magic. It’s when the entire place seems to come under a blanket of mist and the lushness of the valley increases manifold, waterfalls come alive cascading down with a gush, the slopes bloom with flowers in sundry shades. The conservative traveller may be circumspect about visiting any hill station during monsoon but the experienced ones who know the roads well may just want to live out a fresh experience. But even then the outdoorsy people won’t have much to do as many activities will be off-limits. But again if you are intent on going to the hill station during July to September then this is the best time to book cheap hotels in Mahabaleshwar.

For families this is the best climate to visit Mahabaleshwar as they can plan their trips around summer vacations of their kids. The temperature stays between 15 to 35 degrees Celsius, which makes it slightly warm, but still better than an Indian summer.

Low Season (July-October)

You either like the rain, or you don’t. If you are visiting Mahabaleshwar in the monsoon, you will need to like it. The hill station experiences mild to heavy rainfall. While this leaves the hill station looking gorgeous, it makes moving around a tad inconvenient.

If you like the rains or are interested in nature, this is a good time to visit, as the entire landscape turns a lush green. The air is fresh and invigorating, and the hill station is as though covered with a fine gossamer veil. The only flip side to the weather is that most activities are shut for the season, leaving you to find ways to entertain yourself. However, that makes it a great time to head out for a walk in the rains, with no destination in mind. You can stop by the many lakes and waterfalls that spring up during this season. Take care, though; the roads can be slippery.

Significant events : The monsoon is perfect for trekking in the hill slopes of Mahabaleshwar. Put on your trekking shoes and head off into the gentle folds of the mountains of the Western Ghats. Or, you can curl up with a book by the window and watch the water cascade down, creating an ethereal world outside.

Why you should visit now : The weather is beautiful, undoubtedly. However, because of the slight inconvenience, the crowds are smaller and this means you get better deals at hotels. Moreover, the streets are emptier and you can have the place pretty much to yourself, without worrying about too many tourists.

Know before you visit : Mahabaleshwar has a wet monsoon. Go prepared. Keep a raincoat or an umbrella handy. However, be ready to get thoroughly soaked, in spite of precautions.

Tips : Carry proper walking shoes as the wet roads and hill sides can be slippery and treacherous. Pack sensible clothes that will dry quickly.
