Meet the Founder Joe Sharp

Joe is a former professional football Physiotherapist and Sharp Physiotherapy first began in 2019 from Joe’s shed.

Since then, the clinic has grown in to large physiotherapy team and is one of the leading providers of physio in Scunthorpe and Lincolnshire.

The founding vision was to deliver a level of injury management normally reserved for professional athletes to all patients, regardless of age or sporting interest.

The treatment techniques and rehab protocols we have developed through years of treating professional sports people have been transferred to private practice, with great success.

“ Ross “ Been working under Sam at Sharp Physio now for 3 weeks. I had suffered with calf, ITB, piriformis and lower back pain for over three years and seen multiple people. I wasn't able to wake up pain free, never mind functioning on a day to day basis. Sam has managed not just to relieved of my pain but he has done this in 3 sessions. I have gone from being unable to sit down properly, sleep for any length of time or stand to not waking up with pain and feeling instantly depressed because of the pain. As a result, I feel like a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I am no longer reliant on painkillers and training every day. ”
“ Debbie “ I cannot thank Sam and Joe enough for what they have done for me and getting me back running again. When I first started having treatments I could not even run because of the pain. But now with their expertise and knowledge I am back running on the road. And pain free! Their professionalism, expertise, knowledge and customer service from start to finish is absolutely outstanding and I cannot thank them enough. ”
“ Will “ Joe diagnosed my back over the phone, refused to see me and sent me directly to hospital. Now this may sound like bad business for him but he literally saved my life by doing this. I was diagnosed with a massive spinal AVM that required immediate spinal cord surgery and months and months of after care. During, Joe was in contact with my myself and my wife all the time I was in hospital. Despite the fact he had never met or seen me as a client! After leaving hospital, Joe and his team were the only ones I trusted to do my rehab and without them I have no doubt I would not have made the amazing recovery I have. ”
“ Annie “ Lucy is a fantastic physiotherapist. After one session, she completely eradicated the pain I was feeling which was actually due to a different problem. When another physio said there was nothing that they could do, Lucy was fantastic and sorted me out. If I need more treatment I will definitely be coming back. ”
“ Ian “ Some years ago I had fallen on the base of my spine on a concrete floor. Despite acupuncture and visits to various physiotherapists I was still getting sharp pains in my lower back when playing golf. I visited Sharp physio Bawtry in December and had weekly appointments with Sam. Before the first session I could barely walk but after 3 or 4 treatment I was virtually pain free. I was given stretching exercises to do at home, which really helped. Sam explained exactly what he was doing, answered all my questions adding that I should have an MRI so he could have a complete picture of possible underlying problems. It turned out that I have a spinal stenosis but the regular treatment alleviated the pain and it was recommended I do not need surgery. Throughout my treatments Sam has been the ultimate professional and I wholeheartedly recommend Sharp physiotherapy to get the job done. ”
“ Natalie “ After seeing numerous professionals including physiotherapists, chiropractors, sports therapists and going for various treatments, nothing has ever given long lasting relief. I decided to give Joe a try and after the first session I knew straight away that this was different to any treatment I had received before. After 4 sessions, he has resolved the ongoing issues I suffered with for over 1.5 years. More importantly, I am seeing long lasting effects for the first time. From the first visit Joe took the time to listen to me and ever since has shown his knowledge and professionalism throughout. The approaches he uses are second to none and I would highly recommend him to everyone. Thanks Joe I really appreciate the difference you have made. ”

Welcome to my Sports Physiotherapy & Performance website

Hello, and a sincere thank you for visiting my website. In this ultra-competitive field of musculoskeletal healthcare, I truly value every patient and client I see.

I am here to help you achieve your goal; to be free from pain, to become stronger, to mobilise independently, to perform better and so on.

I help you to achieve your goal(s) in an ETHICAL and MORAL way. I aim to help you in as few sessions as possible, with you being very much a part of the process... No  10 minute 'pop & crack' sessions for weeks on end from me!

Each and every session lasts 45 minutes, and I typically ask for 3-4 physiotherapy sessions to meet your goals. There are of course times when more are needed based upon complexity.

Why choose physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a well-respected, research-driven, allied healthcare profession, focused on a patient-centred approach of rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy is a PROTECTED TITLE, with all therapists registered on the https://www.hcpc-uk.org/ website.

A Physiotherapist dealing with musculoskeletal conditions is trained to be able to DIAGNOSE...other professions do not have this level of training so please consider this when seeking help as to whether a clinically trusted diagnosis is important or not.

Why choose me as your physiotherapist?

I've been a Chartered Physiotherapist since 2004, and in private practice since 2006. This means I have a WEALTH of experience...which is another way of saying I've learned from my many mistakes!

I love to learn and better myself. In 2013 I was awarded my Masters degree in Musculoskeletal medicine.

I care. I despise hearing of people being exploited for multiple, unnecessary treatments, for months on end, for financial gain. Your treatment will be the same approach I would offer my friends and family. You are not a £ sign, but someone asking me for help, and that is what drives me.

My Treatment Approach

My 'treatment approach' is built upon THE most important facet of any patient-physio, interaction, plenty of time to talk, listen and ask questions.

This is why I value the time I provide for each session - 45 minutes.

You will never feel rushed and will leave knowing how between us, YOU'LL GET BETTER!

SOME IMPORTANT FACTS & STATS

80% of runners get injured.

That's a truly shocking statistic. BUT that also means 20% don't....let me help you join the right club!

Why seeing a physio matters

If you want your injury / area of pain to be DIAGNOSED, then of the many 'therapy professions' out there, only a Physiotherapist is trained to make a clinical diagnosis. ALL professions have their respective roles to play, with my role being to DIAGNOSE from which rehabilitation can then be planned.

95% of elite runners use strength training...compare that to 10% of amateurs...

Amateur runners really know how to make hard work of run training. Chances are they're over-training AND not engaging in strength training....with me in your corner I can change ALL of that!

BAD NEWS: Beyond the age of 40, the body starts to lose muscle mass via a process called Sarcopenia.... GOOD NEWS: It's reversible!

I've been helping people to regain muscle mass and improve strength for many years, so I can help you too!

...some effective solutions

Injury is avoidable - join the '20% club' today & become a happy runner.

The fact is that most running injuries can be avoided ...and I can help you find out how

problems of the lower limb & BACK...

The body LOVES movement, hence why rehabilitation for lower back & lower limb pain will always involve exercise-rehabilitation in addition to other forms of treatment.

So whether it's a stiff joint that needs to be loosened, a weak muscle that needs to be strengthened or any other tissue dysfunction, I'll ALWAYS be able to offer you some form of help.

Raise your performance and feel like a pro

Being a runner myself, I know the elation of a well-executed performance. With a structured and bespoke run-specific Strength & Conditioning plan, I can guide you through a much neglected form of training to raise your running performance

My four core areas of interest

Run Coaching: bespoke training plans from 5k to ultra-marathon!

Since 2016 I have been coaching 'aspirational age-group athletes' in triathlon and running to reach their true potential and achieve their athletic goals.

Currently focusing solely on runners, as a UESCA Certified Running Coach, you can be assured of the highest level of scientific reasoning and personal application.

Please get in touch to discuss how I can be of help in your running pursuits.

A bit about your therapist

Professionally.

I've been a Chartered Physiotherapist for over 20 years now and barring a short spell back in the NHS working as an Advanced Practitioner First Contact Physiotherapist (FCP) during lock-down, I have been a self-employed private practitioner for some 18 years.

Between 2008-2017 my former clinic 'McBride Physiotherapy' provided the Orthopaedic Triage Service for North Lincs CCG out of clinics in Scunthorpe, Brigg & Epworth.

In 2013 I was awarded my Masters degree (MSc) in Musculoskeletal Medicine.

Helping people overcome their pain and achieve their respective goals is a genuine privilege for me and will never lose its appeal.

I am proud to be a Chartered Physiotherapist and fully embrace the ethical, moral and patient-centred values the profession endorses.

Sporting Achievements

Running was my main passion with a 5 year spell where triathlon 'took over' my life!

I have completed eleven Ultra-marathons including the Viking Way plus a bit extra (160 miles) over four consecutive days and 100 miles in 24 hours back & forth across the Humber Bridge.

I'm a proud member of the 5k sub-20, 10k sub-40 and half-marathon sub-90 respective 'clubs'.

I've staggered across the finish line in four full-distance (140.6) 'Ironman' triathlons, multiple half Ironman (70.3) triathlons and proudly faced my open-water fears with three sea-swim triathlons...I still don't know how!

Keeping on the endurance theme, I've also ridden my motorbike (my first true love!) from John O'Groats to Lands End in under 14 hours...much easier than cycling it!

Sadly, covid finally got me in Sep '22, which ultimately put pay to my competitive running aspirations.

I still dream about my 'comeback'!

My strength-training has provided a huge boost to my low-points in no longer being able to run as I once did.

I live with my long-suffering beautiful physio wife Helen, our dobermann, Lenny, two cats and a teenager who occasionally grunts something at me between raiding the fridge and cupboards. If I'm not out training in and around the beautiful Broughton woods then I can be found walking in them with my dog!

Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact me at [email protected] if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Absolutely not! You are self-referring to me with no GP referral needed. If, following your assessment I believe your GP needs to be involved then I can make contact with them with your agreement.

You pay via the online booking form on the website - payment secures your appointment.

Alternatively you can e-mail me [email protected] and arrange your appointment that way - a received BACS payment then secures your appointment

No. All further appointments will be paid in advance via the online booking form or alternatively as a BACS payment - payment secures your appointment

This is a difficult question to answer as the number of sessions may differ considerably based upon the individual, their presentation and their particular goal(s) with Physiotherapy. I will of course discuss with you the anticipated number of sessions needed following the assessment.

Whilst I'm an experienced and advanced level practitioner keen to get you better as quickly as possible, I didn't graduate from Hogwarts school of wizardry! If you're after a one-hit wonder then I can warmly recommend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etviGf1uWlg ....enjoy!

Whilst that might sadly be the experience of some, you will certainly NOT be discharged with a generic sheet of exercises from me!

Physiotherapists treat backs too!! Given that approximately 90% of the population will experience back pain at some point in their life, then in my 20 years as a Physiotherapist I have successfully assessed and treated a LOT of patients with back pain.

If you witnessed me working not knowing my profession, you could mistake me for a chiropractor at times as I sometimes use 'spinal manipulations' (called 'adjustments' by chiropractors). However, I also use other methods of hands-on treatment as well as exercise-therapy.

Well, that's entirely your prerogative of course but for a speedy and expert level of assessment then I'd recommend an assessment with me. My advanced level of expertise will be able to determine if your problem is something I can help you with or not. If not I can then liaise with your GP to assist in ongoing management.

Loose clothing is always preferable as I will be assessing how your body moves and so tight clothing will interfere with this.

For a lower limb complaint then a pair of shorts / loose trousers that will roll up would be advised.

For a foot & ankle complaint then I will be asking you to remove your sock...it always amazes me when people are surprised by this, although typically it's because they haven't painted their nails!

For a back complaint I will need to actually look at your back and so again loose clothing will help.

For a shoulder complaint then a t-shirt / vest top would be hugely helpful.

If you're at all unsure then please e-mail me at [email protected]

Sadly not. The clinic is just me and I never intend to employ anyone EVER again!!

To the right of the grey entrance doors is a bank of buzzers.

Press my button (Suite 3 McBride Physio & Performance) and wait for me to buzz you in.

Once in reception you can sit and wait till I come and collect you at your appointed time.

Yes you can. Please ask me about this following your first session.

I have intentionally NOT registered with private healthcare companies as invariably they refuse to pay our full fees. I can of course provide you with a receipt on headed paper / e-mail for you to then claim your costs back

NO! A Physiotherapist is VERY different to the aforementioned professions. Even the Sports Therapy degree does NOT allow a sports therapist to make a clinical diagnosis. This can be confirmed by contacting the Sports therapy Association.   https://www.thesta.co.uk/site/index.php

Simply click on one of the many links throughout this website to make an on-line appointment.

This will transfer you to a 3rd party site I use for my bookings, SIF Health.

Select the service you wish to see me for, choose the date & time, make payment and you're booked, it's that simple!

The personalised care you deserve

Please contact me directly with any questions, comments, or queries you may have and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Physiotherapists offering lifeline to women

Communications Team 25th September 2024 News

home visit physiotherapy scunthorpe

Our specialist women’s health physiotherapy services are providing a vital lifeline for women previously too scared and embarrassed to leave their home.

Here at NHS Humber Health Partnership, which operates Scunthorpe General Hospital, Grimsby’s Diana Princess of Wales Hospital, Goole and District Hospital, Hull Royal Infirmary, Castle Hill Hospital and community services across northern Lincolnshire, our dedicated and highly skilled team of specialist pelvic health physiotherapy team provide the very best care for women with pelvic health problems.

The team are working with hundreds of women suffering with pelvic floor dysfunction which can leave them with urinary and faecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain and more.

As part of the new national perinatal pelvic health strategy (PPHS), we have recruited extra physiotherapists to help with the workload across our hospitals with further recruitment underway to support an Advanced Practice Physiotherapist. The aim of the PPHS is to provide focus on prevention, identification, and timely treatment for pelvic floor dysfunction during pregnancy and for at least 12 months after birth.

Helena Trought, who works at Scunthorpe and Grimsby hospitals, said: “This service makes such a difference to women and their quality of life. Women tell me it has given them a newfound confidence; they are able to leave the house without worrying about having an accident. One woman told me she could now go on holiday, wear a bikini, and get in the pool with her kids without the fear of embarrassing continence issues.”

Pelvic floor dysfunction is when the muscles or surrounding tissue are not working as they should do which can lead to faecal and urinary leakages when coughing, sneezing, laughing, running, or just standing up. It can also result in pelvic organ prolapse sexual dysfunction and more.

Physiotherapy helps retrain and strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and can improve or prevent the symptoms.

Helena said: “It is often perceived as an older person’s issue. However, the majority of women I see are young women and women who have suffered an injury during childbirth, which is when they are most vulnerable. I am also seeing teenagers who are experiencing problems.

“The main thing is for women to seek help and not sit in silence at home too scared to go out, too embarrassed to speak up and seek help from their care provider. I want to empower women to feel confident in their own bodies throughout their lifespan. I want women to be able to live their lives to the full and not be blighted by something which can be treated. They don’t have to live in isolation, or in pain both of which can impact on their mental health.”

Cleethorpes mum of one Laura gave birth to her daughter at Grimsby hospital last October during which she suffered a third-degree tear. She said: “My midwife was absolutely amazing, and I am still in touch with her today. She explained everything to me before I went to theatre for the tear to be repaired.

“I was slightly concerned about any lasting damage as I am a physically active person and exercise regularly, so I didn’t want to experience any incontinence or prolapses now or in the future. At my six-week check post birth my consultant referred me to Helena.

“She gave me pelvic floor exercises which I had to do in my own time, and I met regularly with her for treatment. She always updated me on my progress and being the competitive person I am I always wanted to keep improving. She kept reiterating how the exercises needed to become part of my everyday life moving forward.”

During her treatment, Laura did a range of pelvic floor exercises with the aim of strengthening the muscles. This is because the tear had affected her muscles and the way they contracted. At the start of her treatment there was minor strength on one side, and none on the other. Today, her pelvic floor muscles are back to normal and working as they should.

Laura added: “Helena took the time to get to know me, as well as my daughter as she was often with me at my appointments. She was a significant part of my recovery and I have to thank her for re-building my pelvic floor. She was so kind and considerate. At the end of my treatment, I felt some sadness as Helena had become part of my mothering life. I’ll forever be thankful to her. If any new mums out there get offered a women’s health physio, take it!. They’re superheroes.”

Nicole Haslam, another one of our specialist pelvic health physiotherapists who works in Hull, said: “I am privileged to work in this speciality and have spent many years developing my skills to best treat these ladies. Women’s health has for so long been a poor relation part of healthcare and I am passionate about spreading the word and helping women of all ages. Seeing the anxiety and worry visibly melt away as women are given the opportunity to explain their problems and really feel heard. The relief on their faces when they realise that someone actually hears what they are saying and understands their problems is probably the most satisfying aspect of my role.”

The service, which is provided at Grimsby, Scunthorpe, and Hull currently sees on average 130 women per week. Women can be referred in a number of ways including from urogynaecology, obstetrics, midwifery, nurse practitioners, other allied health professionals and by GPs. If you think the service could help you, then speak to your healthcare provider and ask for a referral.

The team works to help women with some of the most embarrassing and not talked about topics in health. They want to be able to help women live healthier lives, for longer.
