Port Southampton is the UK's largest passenger (ferry and cruise) port and Britain's second-largest cargo/container port (following Felixstowe). Its first dock was opened in 1843. Most of its operations back then were regular Transatlantic crossings between UK and USA. Since 1982, the port is owned and operated by ABP (Associated British Ports Holdings Ltd).

Currently, Southampton is ranked the UK's largest cruise port and UK's second-largest container port (after Felixstowe).

Port Southampton

Port Southampton (locode GBSOU) is currently the UK's largest seaport, handling annually over GBP 40 billion of exports. The worth of its total trade is ~GBP 75 billion. Southampton is also UK's largest port for vehicle exports and home to UK's second-largest containership terminal (after Felixstowe) handling annually ~1 million TEU-containers.

The port (all its facilities) is managed by ABP (London-headquartered corporation) that owns 21x UK seaports and manages ~1/4th of Britain's sea-shipping trade. ABP Southampton is port's Statutory Harbour Authority, VTS Authority (vessel traffic service) and Pilotage Authority. Pilotage (vessel assistance by ABP pilots) is compulsory on arrival-channel navigation, for berthing-unberthing operations and also when the vessels shift anchorage in Southampton Harbour.

As cruise port, Southampton handles 500+ ship calls and 2+ million passengers annually. As ferry port, Southampton serves ~3 million passengers to and from Isle of Wight .

In the period 2012-2017, in port development projects were invested over GBP 280 million, including over GBP 50 million in new vehicle export facilities. On November 2, 2017, was inaugurated the Pacific Terminal (vehicle export terminal) that serves UK car manufacturers. The new facility has parking capacity 3400 spaces and is part of ABP's GBP 50 million investment plan for the port. Southampton is UK's main vehicle handling port, with 9 shipping lines making every month 110 visits to 52 ports in 40 different countries.

In 2017, the port handled some of world's largest boxships - MOL Triumph and MOL Trust (each with TEU capacity 20170 containers). The largest ever to visit the port boxship so far - Milan Maersk (20568 TEUs) - docked here on November 7, 2017. The Triple-E class vessel has LOA length 399 m (1309 ft), width 59 m (194 ft), above waterline height 60 m (197 ft).

Port's sheltered inland location and also Isle of Wight (in the English Channel) protect it from the effects of bad weather. Additional advantages are the close proximity to London City and the excellent rail / road infrastructure linking to the rest of England and bypassing the capital city's congestion.

In March 2021, DP World Southampton (cargo terminal) received "Freeport" status from the UK government. DP World Southampton also started an infrastructure investment project (GBP 40 million) which includes: dredging and widening of the boxship berths (via partnership with ABP), purchasing (GBP 10M) 11 Kalmar Hybrid Straddle Carriers (vehicles which lift TEUs moved by quay cranes), redevelopment of the dockyard for empty TEU storage , quay extension (by 120 m / 394 ft) to allow the world’s biggest gantry cranes to serve all the terminal's berths.

In March 2022, ABP officially opened for business developments an area of 30 acres (12 hectares), including 22 acres (at Redbridge Ward/which has a Freeport status) and 8 acres (in the Marchwood Industrial Park).

Each cruise ship visit to Southampton generates ~GBP 2,7 million in economic impact, of which about half remains within the region. The sector also annually supports ~14000 local jobs.

Southampton cruise port

Port Southampton has 5 cruise terminals in addition to passenger ferry terminals, container terminal and drydock facilities for marine vessel refurbishments and repairs. Major turnaround/departure cruise ports in the UK are England's Bristol , Dover , Harwich , Hull , Liverpool , Tilbury-London , Newcastle and Portsmouth , and Scotland's Leith-Edinburgh and Greenock-Glasgow .

In late-November 2020 ABP announced that for the building of the 11695-m2 (125890-ft2) new cruise terminal at Berth 102 (Western Docks) is contracted Brymor Group (Portsmouth-based construction company). The new (5th) terminal will provide shore-to-ship power supply. The new terminal (via partnership with NCLH-Norwegian and MSC Cruises ) received a GBP 8 million (EUR 8,9 M / USD 10,65 M) grant from the UK's Getting Building Fund. Also in late-November 2020, MSC signed a long-term agreement with Port Southampton for preferential docking rights. The deal started in summer 2021 with the homeporting of MSC Magnifica at the Port's newest/5th terminal (named in May "Horizon Cruise Terminal"). By this agreement, every year MSC has to homeport at least one ship in Southampton. For 2021, MSC scheduled for Magnifica 21x roundtrips from Southampton, including to the Mediterranean, mini-cruises to Northern Europe and 7-days to Norway's Fjords.

  • After receiving a GBP 7 million government grant, in 2020 ABP Southampton introduced shoreside power connectivity for liners mooring at the new Horizon Cruise Terminal. Shore-power (aka "cold ironing") enables docked vessels to receive electricity from the city's power grid. From the berth, vessels can plug-in directly to the grid for full onboard operations without using their diesel engines (or gas turbines) which are shut down right after berthing.
  • In mid-May 2021 ABP announced that Mayflower Cruise Terminal will be also equipped with shorepower technology.

In 2018, the port had scheduled 8 maiden calls (new ships visiting for the first time) - AIDAperla, Norwegian Bliss, MSC Meraviglia, Sapphire Princess; MS Zuiderdam, Seven Seas Navigator, and MS Koningsdam. In 2018, here was held the naming ceremony for the former P&O Adonia ship - now Azamara Pursuit (August 28), followed by a 2-night Cruise to Nowhere . Cruise port's busiest day in 2018 was August 31 - a 6 ship day with booked for berthing here Arcadia (P&O), Aurora (P&O), Braemar ( Fred Olsen ), Independence of the Seas (Royal Caribbean), Mein Schiff 3 (TUI) and Queen Victoria (Cunard).

For season 2018, MSC Cruises scheduled an extended itinerary program with more regular departures from the UK. The company intends to homeport here one of its newer (bigger) ships.

For 2017, the cruise port reported a record-breaking year with over 2 million cruise passengers. It is estimated that every visiting cruise ship brings around GBP 2 million to the city's economy. In 2017 the port received over 500 passenger ship calls. The busiest long weekend (15 cruise ships) was in June.

In June 2016, the 3 NCLH (abbrev "Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings") owned companies - Oceania , RSSC-Regent and NCL Norwegian - were consolidated/headquartered together in a building previously used by Carnival UK. The move came ahead of NCL returning to UK port departure cruises in 2017 (for the first time since 2010) with the ship Norwegian Jade leaving roundtrip from Southampton. NCLH's new UK company address is: "Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd, 4th Floor, Mountbatten House, Grosvenor Square, Southampton, SO15 2JU".

On May 21, 2016, RCI-Royal Caribbean International and the port authority ABP signed a GBP 5,5 million deal. It secures City Cruise Terminal (Berth 101) as the Royal Caribbean's official UK cruise departure port for the period 2016-2023. The Southampton cruise port's contribution to the UK economy was ~15000 cruise shipping-related jobs and GBP 1+ billion economic impact. On April 11, 2016, the new RCI ship Ovation of the Seas arrived and docked at Berth 101 (City Cruise Terminal, Western Docks). The ship stayed for a few days in Southampton before the repositioning cruise (53-days "Global Odyssey" itinerary) ending in port Tianjin-Beijing China .

On April 20, 2015, the RCI-Royal Caribbean ship Anthem of the Seas was officially named in Southampton. The christening ceremony was led by the godmother Emma Wilby (British travel agent). On May 3, 2015, Cunard Line's 175th Anniversary Celebrations were held in the cruise port. The special event was attended by all three Cunard liners - Queen Mary 2 , Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria . The three ships left the port together on their scheduled itineraries, en-route to, respectively, NYC New York, Hamburg and Guernsey (Channel Islands) .

In late-March 2014, RCI announced that Explorer of the Seas will be deployed in Europe and homeported in Southampton for summer 2015 (April through September). The list of roundtrips included 3- and 8-night Baltic Sea, 11- to 16-night Mediterranean and 10- to 14-night Madeira, Canary Islands and Azores.

(statistics) In 2013, the cruise port handled around 1,7 million passengers. In 2011 were handled nearly 1,5 million passengers (11% increase over 2010). Each cruise ship call in Port Southampton generates an economic impact of about GBP 2,5 million.

(statistics) Following the COVID crisis, in 2022 Port Southampton handled a record 489 cruise ship calls, including 8 maiden visits (by AIDAcosma, AIDAperla, Azamara Onward, Celebrity Beyond, Enchanted Princess, Norwegian Prima, Silver Moon, Arvia).

For 2023, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 492 ship calls/booked berthings (including 7 maiden/first-time visits) and expected ~2 million passengers.

In 2023, cruise shipping in Southampton contributed the record GBP 1 billion to Hampshire's maritime economy. The season was marked by ~2,6 million cruise tourists handled during 460 ship calls. Each ship call brought ~GBP 2,7 million to the local economy.

This is the famous dock from where RMS Titanic left on her maiden voyage in 1912. Many of the Titanic victims (nearly 500) were Southampton citizens.

The home dock of the Cunard's liners (Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary 2) was open by HM The Queen in 1966.

In 2015-2016, the "Cunard Terminal" was renovated for GBP 5 million. The renovation project was funded by Carnival Corporation and ABP (Associated British Ports) and carried out over 2 stages. Phase 1 (completed 2016-Q1) included building infrastructure improvements (check-in area, baggage handling area, X-ray / security screening area), also installing a 46-person elevator and reorganizing the drop-off passenger area. Phase 2 (completed in 2016-Q4) included the installation of a new ship-to-shore walkway.

In October 2018 started construction works on the new (GBP 15 million) multi-deck parking with capacity 3000 vehicles. This is the 8th multi-deck parking at the seaport. For the project was contracted Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure, with scheduled completion by June 2019.

(NEW) Horizon Cruise Terminal (Western Docks' Berth 102)

In late-November 2020, ABP announced that for the building of the 11695-m2 (125,890-ft2) new cruise terminal at Berth 102 (Western Docks) is contracted Brymor Group (Portsmouth-based construction company). The new (5th) terminal features roof-mounted solar panels (2000+ PVs/photo-voltaic modules) and provides shoreside power supply .

The new terminal (via partnership with NCLH-Norwegian and MSC ) received a GBP 8 million (EUR 8,9M / USD 10,65M) grant from the UK's Getting Building Fund.

Port Southampton's newest cruise terminal costs GBP 55 million (EUR 64M / USD 76M) and was completed in July 2021.

In early-April 2021, ABP started an online contest for the name of the building. Fans had the chance to win a 7-night free cruise for two in a balcony cabin (roundtrip from Southampton) by simply submitting their name suggestions for the terminal before April 28. After receiving 4000+ name suggestions, in May ABP announced the facility's name - "Horizon Cruise Terminal".

In mid-June 2021, ABP Southampton installed an airbridge (GBP 5 million / EUR 5,8M) at Berth 102 (Horizon Terminal). The 235-tonne airbridge (jetway) was custom-built (to automatically adjust with the tide). It is permanently positioned at the quay and provides the docked ships with ship-to-shore passenger access.

As of 2021, ABP operates 21 seaports plus other shipping-related businesses, annually contributes GBP 7,5 billion (EUR 8,8B / ~USD 10,4B) to the UK economy, and supports ~119,000 jobs.

Ocean Cruise Terminal

  • Address is "Cunard Road, Eastern Docks, Southampton SO14 3QN".
  • GPS coordinates are N 50°53′29.6″, W 01°24′02.5″
  • Dock gate - 4 (GPS N 50°53'47.2", W 1°23'55.1")

Ocean Cruise Terminal was inaugurated in 2009. It features a modern design (Art-Deco) building, short-stay parking, bar, cafe, taxi rank.

In October 2018 started the GBP 12 million (2-year) reconstruction project via partnership with P&O Cruises ( Carnival UK ). Following the upgrade, Ocean Terminal now can handle bigger liners, among which P&O UK's newest ship Iona (2021). The upgrade was completed in March 2019 and increased the terminal's capacity by 50%.

Project's Phase 1 (completed in March 2019) included infrastructure upgrades and adding 18 new bollards (150-ton each) replacing the old 50-ton ones. Bollards are quayside vertical posts used for mooring (lines). Terminal's building was redesigned and significantly improved and increased (as passenger capacity).

Project's Phase 2 included installing 2 new gangways (airbridges) and 2000 solar panels (mounted on the building's roof). Both gangways were specially designed for the 5200-passenger Carnival XL class ships (Iona being the first) and arrived from Barcelona on January 4, 2020. Ocean Cruise Terminal also received LNG bunkering capabilities.

The renovated and enlarged terminal was completed in May 2020, and like the terminals Horizon and Mayflower also provides the berthed vessels with shoreside power .

City Cruise Terminal

  • Location: Western Docks
  • Address is "Solent Road, Western Docks, Southampton SO15 1HJ".

At City Terminal can dock even the world's largest passenger ships. Dock facilities include short-stay parking, bar, cafe, taxi rank. Located nearby is Mayflower Park - a great vantage point to watch the departing ships.

Terminal's capacity was doubled after a 7-year redevelopment project.

Southampton City Cruise Terminal (Berth 101) is Royal Caribbean's official UK homeport (departure port for roundtrip itineraries). The list of terminal's improvements made by the RCCL corporation includes new paperless check-in operations, faster curb-to-gangway processing, new security screening zones, step-free access to larger RCI ships (up to Quantum-Class), free Wi-Fi (throughout the terminal), digital signage (wayfinders), new air-conditioning, improved logistics.

Mayflower Cruise Terminal

  • Address is "Herbert Walker Ave, Western Docks, Southampton SO15 1HJ".
  • GPS coordinates are N 50°54′18.6″, W 01°25′45.8″
  • Dock gate - 10 (GPS N 50°54′14.8″, W 01°25′02.8″) or 20 (GPS N 50°54′48.2″, W 01°27′39.4″)

Mayflower Terminal is generally associated with the P&O UK ships . Its facilities include taxi rank, bar, cafe, an art gallery. The terminal was inaugurated in 1960. Here are homeported RMS Queen Mary 2 and P&O UK's largest and newest liners.

A new cruise ship dock was opened on April 28, 2015 (Berth 104 / Dock Gate 10). Mayflower Terminal's redevelopment project cost around GBP 6 million and resulted in increased passenger capacity and berthing (allowing even the world's biggest cruise vessels to dock here). In the terminal's refurbishment project were engaged 200+ workers on the refurbishment. Works started in December 2014. After their completion, the Mayflower Terminal has 36 check-in desks, larger passenger lounge, more security search lanes, expanded passenger drop-off/pick-up areas (at the terminal's entrance).

Like the new Horizon Terminal, Mayflower also provides shorepower connectivity for the docked liners.

Cruises from Southampton (2023)

Cruises from Southampton in (2023)

MSC Cruises continues its all-year-round presence in the Port of Southampton with its most popular ship in the fleet, and later in the year, a brand new ship will visit for the winter!

As the end of the winter season approaches, MSC Virtuosa will sail her final 7-night roundtrip voyage to Hamburg and then conduct a series of mini-cruises – highlighting the fun you can have on the ship in just three nights!

Finally, at the end of the month, she moves into her first Spring/Summer longer voyage of the season by setting sail to the beautiful Canary Islands on a 12-night voyage which includes a stop in the stunning city of Lisbon, Portugal!

Cruises from Southampton in April 2023

As Spring turns towards Summer, MSC Virtuosa will conduct two 7-night Norwegian Fjords voyages visiting wonderful ports such as Olden (home of the Briksdal Glacier) and Flaam, a beautiful little Norwegian port nestled deep in a fjord – with its own microbrewery!

May is wrapped up with two short mini cruises (3 and 5 nights) with calls to Rotterdam, Cork and Portland between the two of them!

June marks a special one-off voyage for MSC Virtuosa , where she will sail on a fortnight cruise to Iceland and Norway – with a lovely overnight stop in Reykjavik for passengers, before crossing the Norwegian Sea and visiting the popular port of Alesund, followed by Maloy and Flaam before heading back to Southampton.

The second half of June sees MSC Virtuosa heading South, across the English Channel and down towards the Bay of Biscay in two back-to-back voyages to Spain & France – calling at ports such as La Rochelle, Bilbao and La Coruna – a great taster of some warmer weather and European ports.

That wraps up half of the cruises from Southampton in 2023 for MSC – there is still plenty to come, though!

As we move into the school holidays and the peak season for MSC Virtuosa , she will conduct three back-to-back 14-night Mediterranean voyages! The first of which sets sail on the 1st July and heads from Southampton to Toulon (France) – the port has a natural deepwater harbour and is also the home of local fishermen (and restaurants) and also wine-making – make sure you sample the local delicacies whilst there! (sounds like the perfect combination!)

Great Spanish ports on each of the three voyages – make sure you spend some time wandering around Cadiz – you can literally walk into the old city from the ship, and the bustling market and cafes are an ideal way to enjoy some time ashore!

August 2023

This month sees the return of MSC Virtuosa back to the Canary Islands on a 12-night voyage, followed by a 2-night mini-cruise to Guernsey (which will certainly be a party event if you are going!) and then a 7-night voyage to Norway – whilst you may have missed the Midnight Sun by this point in the year – it will still be very light with daylight stretching from 4am until around 11pm each day!

September 2023

In September, MSC Virtuosa will first head back to Norway for the last time in 2023 on a 7-night voyage before returning and heading to the Canary Islands – this time on an extended 14-night voyage which also calls in at Casablanca (Morroco) and Cadiz (Spain) en-route to the Canary Islands and Madeira.

On her return, she will conduct a short 3-night mini-cruise to Rotterdam and back and then a further 4-night mini-cruise to Cork and Portland, before setting sail on a rare 15-night extended Mediterranean voyage on the 30th September! She will call at several Spanish ports during her trip including the ever popular Barcelona!

October 2023

As we head into the final month of MSC Virtuosa’s Southampton 2023 season, she will head to France & Spain once more on a 7-night voyage before conducting a slightly longer than usual mini-cruise (5 nights) which will call at Rotterdam, Cork and Portland – before arriving back into Southampton the 27th October 2023.

Meanwhile, the new sister ship, MSC Euribia , will arrive in Southampton for the first time on the 13th of October – she will officially kick off her Winter 2023/24 season with back-to-back 7-night voyages to Hamburg and other ports each week until April 2024! (The countdown to the Christmas Markets is on!)

27th October 2023 is a special day – mark that date! It will be the first time two MSC Meraviglia-plus class ships have been in Southampton on the same day and the first time that MSC Virtuosa will meet her younger sibling, MSC Euribia .

MSC Euribia will leave on a 7-night voyage to Northern Europe. Meanwhile, some lucky passengers will be boarding MSC Virtuosa for an incredible 27-night journey that will take the ship from Southampton, the Mediterranean Sea and along through the Suez Canal before eventually reaching Dubai where she will spend her Winter 2023/24 season (if you’ve not checked out the itineraries there – you really should!)

MSC Euribia will then continue her weekly 7-night Northern Europe itinerary – a perfect mix of sea days and Northern European ports to pass the winter by!

November 2023

MSC Euribia will continue to call in Southampton weekly during November (four times) as she continues her multi-port and multi-embarkation season. As we head towards the end of the month, some ports will start their Christmas Market season too.

Popular ports such as Hamburg will start their Christmas Markets earlier than others – look out for a full Christmas Market Guide from us soon!

These voyages will be an excellent choice for those looking at getting away for a quick Winter break – cruising before Christmas and outside of the school holidays offers excellent value for money – look out for offers from us nearer the time!

December 2023

Whilst MSC Euribia is again continuing her weekly 7-night voyages to Northern Europe (five times in December she will depart Southampton) – they will be anything but routine!

Expect to see the ship transformed into a Christmas Winter Wonderland – complete with outdoor mini-Christmas market, Gluhwein, hot waffles and more!

Enjoy the Christmas festivities at each port you call into and countdown to the 22nd December where MSC Euribia will perform her maiden Christmas Cruise, followed by the 29th December where you can see in 2024 with MSC Euribia on her first NYE Cruise too!

We hope you enjoyed this roundup of what MSC Cruises offers from Southampton in 2023!

Customer reviews for Arvia

Have just been on P&O Arvia out of Southampton. Had a brilliant holiday; ship was lovely and the staff were great.

couple

A fantastic holiday!

group

We never thought we would have taken a cruise on a ship this large but we enjoyed the experience. It was good to have the chance to eat at no extra cost in the Olive Grove and 6th street Diner with a jukebox, it took you back. You also didn’t feel the ship was so large when disembarking as it was so quickly done. All in all it was a great experience!

First cruise and my sister and I loved it!

Mediterranean cruises: your questions answered

The first places most people think of are Rome and Athens, due to their unique historical and cultural sights. Cunard also visits Spain - Barcelona features amazing Gaudi architecture that's well worth a look - Southern France - famous for its vineyards - and Croatia, where lesser-known but just as impressive historic sites await.

The best weather in this region is from April until November, and Cunard visits the Mediterranean within this window. If you're looking for a tan and don't mind the heat, travel in June or July, but if you prefer milder temperatures book your cruise in the autumn months.

The Mediterranean has a changeable climate, depending on the season, but dry, hot and sunny days are to be expected in the peak summer months and often during spring and into autumn. It's not out of the question for temperatures to exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in July or August while even September and October can herald warm and pleasant weather. If you're hoping to spend time relaxing on some of the Mediterranean's sandy beaches, it's best to avoid travel during November to March when temperatures are cooler and days can be fresh and rainy.

Depending on the time of year, you'll need cool clothes and comfortable shoes for exploring the exciting ports along your journey. A sunhat and sunscreen are a must in the summer months, and would be wise in the autumn too, as the sun can still be strong in September and October. For evenings on deck bring light jackets for when the temperatures cool.

For more details and suggested packing lists, see our special guide on what to pack for Mediterranean cruises .

Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Croatia, and Greece all use the Euro. Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar Pound, (although Pound Sterling and Euros are unofficially accepted in parts).

There are twenty sovereign countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea: Spain, Gibraltar, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Cyprus, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco.

Cunard typically sails to countries on the Southern European Coast; Spain, Gibraltar, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Croatia and Greece. Be sure to check our exciting itineraries for more details.

A variety of languages are spoken in the Mediterranean. In Spain, where Spanish is the official language, you'll also find regional languages including Catalan, Galician, Basque and Occitan. Spanish is also spoken in Gibraltar, even though the official language of Gibraltar is English. Similarly, in Malta both Maltese and English are spoken.

In France the native language is French, in Italy it's Italian, in Greece it's Greek and in Croatia it's Croatian. French is also the official language of Monaco but you'll encounter Italian spoken by much of the population here too.

UK and EU citizens, residents of Schengen countries plus residents of the U.S, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan and New Zealand don't currently require a visa to travel the Mediterranean providing the duration of stay is less than 90 days.

Some countries within the Mediterranean require a minimum 6-month validity on your passport, so it's advisable to check the local requirements of the countries included in your Mediterranean cruise itinerary.

  • Carnival Vista Cancels September Cruise for Propulsion Repairs

Picture of Doug Parker

  • August 27, 2024

Carnival Cruise Line’s flagship Vista-class vessel, Carnival Vista, continues to face technical difficulties that impact its sailing schedule.

A large cruise ship, Carnival Vista, sailing on the open sea under a clear blue sky.

The vessel has experienced ongoing propulsion issues that have affected its cruising speed, leading to multiple itinerary changes and now, a full cancellation of an upcoming cruise.

Current Sailing of Carnival Vista

Carnival Vista, which is currently on an 8-night Eastern Caribbean sailing that began on August 24, 2024, from Port Canaveral, Florida, has already seen its itinerary adjusted to accommodate the ship’s reduced cruising speed.

Carnival offered a $50 onboard credit per stateroom as compensation for the changes.

Carnival Vista Changes for September 1, 2024

carnival vista caribbean aerial exterior

Carnival has announced a partial itinerary change for the cruise scheduled to embark on September 1, 2024, due to the same propulsion issues.

The revised itinerary will replace planned visits to Grand Turk and Amber Cove with stops in Nassau and Freeport, The Bahamas.

Affected guests are being offered a $200 onboard credit per stateroom and full refunds for any pre-purchased shore excursions.

Guests also have the option to cancel their cruise for a full refund if they decide that the new itinerary does not meet their vacation expectations.

Cancellation of the September 7, 2024

port canaveral florida

Carnival Cruise Line has now made the decision to cancel the September 7, 2024 cruise entirely to allow more time for the necessary repairs.

In a letter to guests booked on this cruise, Carnival apologized for the inconvenience caused by the cancellation.

All guests will receive a full refund for their cruise fare, shore excursions, and any pre-purchased items from the FUNShop.

Impact on Future Sailings

Ships in Port

Carnival Vista, operating out of Port Canaveral , was scheduled to continue alternating between 6- and 8-night Caribbean itineraries through 2026.

Carnival has not yet announced how long the ship will be out of service or whether additional cruises might be impacted.

Ongoing Carnival Vista Propulsion Issues

carnival vista dry dock

Propulsion issues are no stranger to Carnival’s Vista-class ships . In June 2023, Carnival Vista was taken out of service for repairs.

In 2019, the company had to take Carnival Vista out of service for two weeks to repair propulsion units. This was done by bringing the  world’s largest floating dry dock  down from Northern Europe and lifting the ship out of the water off the Bahamas coast.

The most recent issues manifested during the ship’s August 4 sailing and have persisted through the following voyages, causing multiple delays and changes.

Despite efforts to repair the ship’s engines while docked at Port Canaveral on August 24, 2024, the technical difficulties have not been fully resolved.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Disney Cruise Line ship

I s a voyage on a Disney Cruise Line ship on your bucket list? You'll find a growing number of options when it comes time to pick an itinerary.

While the cruising arm of Disney has long focused mostly on voyages to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, with year-round sailings to those destinations out of Florida, it also now offers a relatively wide range of seasonal sailings to Alaska, the Mexican Riviera, Bermuda, Europe and Canada.

The family-friendly cruise brand, notably, is expanding its footprint worldwide as it adds four new vessels in quick succession.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Already, the first of those ships, the 2,508-passenger Disney Wish , has arrived, boosting the size of the Disney fleet from four ships to five and allowing for more departures to the Caribbean, Mexico and Europe.

Two more sister vessels to Disney Wish are due to begin sailing in 2024 and 2025, respectively, allowing for further expansion in Disney cruise itineraries. In addition, the line has yet another new vessel coming in 2025 that isn't related to the other three. Called Disney Adventure, it's a one-off vessel originally designed for an Asian line , and it'll sail in Asia (perhaps catering mostly to Asian travelers; Disney has been mum so far on the target audience for it).

All these new ships arriving in quick succession will likely mean not just more departures to destinations where Disney Cruise Line is established but also sailings in new regions. For example, Disney has never before offered Asia sailings.

Here are our picks for the five best Disney cruise destinations you can visit with your family.

Caribbean and Bahamas

Disney Cruise Line's top destination has always been the Caribbean and the Bahamas. Since its founding more than two decades ago, the brand has based the bulk of its fleet in Florida to offer sailings to the islands. Port Canaveral, which is just an hour away from Disney's Orlando-area theme parks, has always been its biggest hub.

The line is particularly known for three- and four-night cruises out of Port Canaveral to Castaway Cay and Nassau in the Bahamas. These short getaways let families get a taste of Disney cruising that some Disney fans pair with a stay at Disney World.

The cruise line also regularly offers seven-night sailings out of Port Canaveral that visit Caribbean islands like St. Thomas and Tortola.

Related: First look at Disney Wish in photos

In recent years, Disney has also built up its Caribbean and Bahamas cruise offerings from other ports in Florida — initially Miami and, more recently, Fort Lauderdale. The ships the line has based in these ports typically offer four- and five-night sailings to Castaway Cay and one other port, such as Cozumel or Grand Cayman.

In addition, Disney is offering a growing number of Caribbean sailings out of Galveston, Texas, and New Orleans.

For 2024, the line will have four of its five ships — Disney Wish, Disney Dream, Disney Magic and Disney Fantasy — sailing to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of one of the above ports, with their home bases often shifting between them.

Disney Wish, which is Disney's newest ship, will be based in Port Canaveral year-round to operate the line's classic three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas. These voyages are designed to be paired with a visit to nearby Disney World for a longer Disney vacation.

Disney Fantasy will also sail out of Port Canaveral to the Bahamas and Caribbean year-round, offering longer voyages.

Disney Dream will spend the start and the end of the year sailing short trips to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale, with a stint in the middle of the year (from May to October) sailing in Europe.

Disney Magic will take Disney Dream's place sailing short trips to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Fort Lauderdale from May to October. During the early and late months of the year, it'll sail out of Galveston.

Come 2025, Disney will have four ships — Disney Fantasy, Disney Wish, Disney Dream and Disney Magic — sailing three- to five-night getaways from Florida to the line's Bahamian destinations, including its new private beach destination Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point and its long-open private island Disney Castaway Cay. Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish will operate the trips from Port Canaveral, while Disney Dream and Disney Magic will sail from Fort Lauderdale.

Before taking up residence in Florida in April 2025, Disney Magic will also offer three months' worth of sailings out of Galveston, Texas, to Progreso and Cozumel in Mexico and Grand Cayman.

All of the 2025 sailings are already open for bookings.

Disney has cut back on voyages out of San Diego for 2024, after increasing its San Diego departures sharply in 2023. But it still offers several trips to Mexico out of the city on Disney Wonder.

For 2024, the 1,754-passenger vessel will offer a mix of three- to seven-night sailings to Mexico during March and April. Shorter three- and four-night sailings typically feature calls at Ensenada, Mexico, and California's Catalina Island. Seven-night sailings include calls at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.

Related: 11 ways to save money on a Disney cruise

The big factor driving Disney's cutbacks on sailings out of San Diego in 2024 is its new focus on voyages out of Australian ports. Disney Wonder will spend much of January and February sailing out of Australian ports and then return to the region in October for another season of Australia trips.

Disney offers a wide variety of itineraries in Europe every summer, from Mediterranean voyages out of Barcelona and Civitavecchia, Italy (the port for Rome), to Northern Europe sailings out of Southampton, England.

Ranging from seven to 11 nights, Disney's Europe voyages each year typically take place on a single ship that sails from multiple home ports throughout the season. For 2024, that ship will be the 2,500-passenger Disney Dream. The line has yet to announce which of its ships will go to Europe in 2025.

Typical for the shorter itineraries the line offers in Europe are seven-night sailings out of Civitavecchia to the Greek Islands. These sailings stop in Mykonos, Santorini and Crete in Greece, as well as Naples, Italy.

Related: 17 tips for sailing on Disney Cruise Line

A longer, 11-night itinerary starting in Civitavecchia and ending in Barcelona includes calls at Piraeus (the port for Athens), Santorini and Mykonos in Greece; Messina (on the island of Sicily), Naples and Livorno in Italy; and Toulon, France.

Among Northern Europe itineraries, Disney offers focused, weeklong sailings to Norway with calls at the Norwegian ports of Alesund, Nordfjordeid, Eidfjord and Stavanger.

Disney does not have a large presence in Alaska. The line sends just one ship to Alaska each year. Family-friendly cruise rivals Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line, by contrast, each send three ships to Alaska each year, and Norwegian Cruise Line sends five vessels to the destination.

Still, Disney fans won't feel like they're missing out. The one vessel Disney sends to Alaska each year, the 1,754-passenger Disney Wonder, stays for nearly the entire summer season, from late June to mid-September and offers a distinctly Disney take on The Last Frontier.

Always beginning and ending in Vancouver, British Columbia, and lasting seven nights, Disney's Alaska sailings typically include stops at three of these four Alaska ports: Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and Icy Strait Point (which three vary by departure date). Itineraries also include a visit to Stikine Icecap, which is south of Juneau.

Related: 5 reasons Disney cruises aren't just for kids

These are fairly typical ports for an Alaska cruise. But the (extra-charge) activities that Disney has organized for the ports aren't always the same as what other lines offer.

As one might expect for Disney, the line has crafted some of its shore excursions in Alaska ports with special Disney touches, such as Disney character appearances at the Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp & Salmon Bake tour in Ketchikan. (Having done this one myself, I will say, for the record, that it's a little hokey; but it does get you a Disney character fix if that's your aim.)

Another shore excursion with a Disney touch is the outdoor Family Scavenger Hunt at Icy Strait Point, where participants join a local guide on a hunt for items such as clam shells and native plants, as well as a "special surprise" with a Disney theme.

Unlike many lines, Disney does not offer one-way sailings to Alaska from Vancouver or Seattle that can be paired with add-on land tours to create an extended sea-and-land Alaska vacation — something known as a "cruisetour." If that's what you're looking for, and you want to stick with a family-friendly line, you might want to consider the one-way cruisetour offerings from Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Related: The ultimate Alaska cruise guide

Disney typically offers at least one and sometimes several cruises to Bermuda each fall, ranging from quick, five-night trips to longer, eight-night sailings.

For the year just ending (2023), the line offered four such sailings, and it's offered even more than that in certain years. Alas, for the coming year (2024), Disney currently does not have a single Bermuda sailing scheduled — a bit of an anomaly.

That said, we would expect Disney to bring back its Bermuda sailings for 2025 or 2026. It's been such a mainstay of the brand.

So ... stay tuned.

Related: The ultimate guide to Disney Cruise Line

Bottom line

Family-friend Disney Cruise Line is a relatively small cruise brand, with just five ships (one of its biggest rivals in the family cruise market, Royal Caribbean, has 26 vessels). But that doesn't mean its itinerary choices are limited. The line offers regular sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas, Mexican Riviera, Alaska, Bermuda and Europe.
