My London: Violet Chachki

violet chachki uk tour

Los Angeles .

What’s your first memory of London?

The Parent Trap with Lindsay Lohan! Really though, one of my favourite memories of London was bringing my solo burlesque show A Lot More Me here for the first stop of the tour. It was my first-ever solo touring show! It had been a dream for a very, very long time and I had worked so hard to produce it, so to see it finally come to life, I just couldn’t believe it. And then to have a sold out show at Clapham Grand! It was just very special.

Where’s your favourite place to spend a night out?

Feel It at Omeara, they always have the best music, best DJs, best crowd.

What’s the most memorable meal you’ve had in London?

That restaurant Berners Tavern off Oxford Street has the best brunches, but what I really love is getting Wok to Walk in Soho late-night after a gig.

Who do you call to have fun?

Jodie Harsh of course! Who else throws THE best parties in London?

Tube, cab or walk?

Only Uber for me.

What would you do if you were Mayor for the day?

I wouldn’t do that. Let Jodie Harsh be the Mayor of London, I’d be interested to see what she would do.

What shops do you rely on?

Rellik is one of the best. I love vintage shopping and buy clothes with longevity in mind; I love the idea of a shoe that lasts a lifetime. I’m also constantly looking for beaded dresses on eBay and Etsy, which I upcycle into burlesque costumes, use as appliqués or turn into different designs. Best place for a first date? I usually invite gentleman callers to my gig and see what happens — usually nothing.

Pride means defiance! Nothing can stop us and I can’t wait to be in London for it

Who is the most iconic Londoner?

Pete Burns.

What do you collect?

What makes London style so special?

Monarchy vs anarchy.

Do you have a favourite London fashion designer?

Richard Quinn . My go-to!

How does the UK drag scene compare to the US?

UK is a bit crunchier and campier, IMO.

How will you be celebrating Pride in London this year?

I’ll be kicking off at The London Edition on the 29th with Jean Paul Gaultier and DJing the Cha Chá club pop-up, then performing on Saturday for the fabulous brunch they’re putting on!

What does Pride mean to you in 2023?

Defiance! Nothing can stop us and I can’t wait to be in London for it.

What are you up to for work at the moment?

Being a fierce little international cross dresser, my dear! I’m working on new music and have some exciting new design projects coming this fall. Oh, and I’m touring next year.

What are you looking forward to this summer?

Some time off in July and August, hoping to get back to Ibiza with some friends! Violet will be co-hosting

The London Edition’s Annual Pride Fundraiser Brunch is held on 1 July in support of The Albert Kennedy Trust and Not a Phase (shop Violet’s clothing range here , and follow her on Spotify here) .

Violet Chachki Breaks Down Each Sensational Look from the Burlesque Show that Wowed Europe

For Violet Chachki , the most mundane of appearances is still an opportunity to showcase some outlandishly frothy fashion. Even when she’s just making videos for her YouTube channel , she’s consistently serving couture-level looks that rival the average red carpet appearance.

So when it came to her first solo burlesque show—which she performed on a tour from Paris to London to Milan in keeping with the schedule of fashion month—Chachki took the costuming quite seriously. From working with Jeremy Scott on a glitzy, gender-bending custom Moschino tuxedo to donning two different Erté-inspired Prada gowns designed by Fabio Zambernardi , Chachki made sure her outfits rivaled those on the runways. Below, the performer breaks down some of the fashion highlights, from the Inspector Gadget-inspired aerialist number to the fresh take on her signature fetishwear style.

Classic Showgirl

“For the opening of the show, I wanted it to be super classic and have high-drama impact. I saw an image of a male performer with two backup showgirls and I wanted to do a gender role reversal. I start off as a Marlene Dietrich -inspired androgynous character in a tuxedo, and have my backup dancers as showgirls. I enlisted the help of Jeremy Scott and the house of Moschino to get the perfect glam tuxedo. I wore one of Jeremy’s animal print tuxedos to the Met Gala afterparty and fell in love with it. Before that, I got to wear a tandem tuxedo to close out Moschino’s Fall 2018 Menswear collection with Oslo Grace , another gender nonconforming model, so I knew Jeremy would be perfect to do this look. Jeremy and he had the brilliant idea of making the coattails of the tuxedo jacket extremely long like the train of a dress. I am absolutely obsessed with what he created—it’s the perfect combination of classic androgyny but with that Moschino twist that I’ve always loved.”

Seductive Aerialist

“The second number of the show is by far a crowd favorite, which is funny considering the outfit is somewhat simple. For inspiration, I wanted to draw from the classic film noir trope of a sleuth, and channel what a strong female detective would have looked like coming from that time period. The whole number is a kind of power play—I’m the strong female lead and I get what I want. After developing the film noir idea more, I realized I could also reference David Lochary’s character in Pink Flamingos when he’s flashing people in the park. The trench coat and the idea of flashing lends itself really well to both burlesque and film noir. I also wanted to reference iconic cartoon characters like Inspector Gadget and Carmen Sandiego.”

Neon Fetish

“The third number in the show is all about fetish aesthetics which is a huge part of me and my brand and what inspires my drag character. That being said, fetish aesthetics is something that I’ve always done, so I knew that I wanted to change it up a bit. I was driving around in Koreatown in Los Angeles and saw a house that had all these wonderful colors: neon yellow, neon pink, and navy blue. I instantly knew these would be great colors for a fresh take on a fetish look. I sourced all of the fabrics from downtown L.A. and shipped them to my corset maker in Atlanta, Anthony Canney , along with a crude sketch inspired by Eric Stanton and Gene Billbrew. And what would a fetish look be without some sick custom fetish boots, courtesy of Natacha Marro out of London.”

The Best Sunscreen for Protecting Skin from Head to Toe

The Prada Gowns

“I was also lucky enough to have not one, but two, custom gowns designed by Fabio Zambernardi and the house of Prada. These are quite possibly the most elaborate costumes I’ve ever worn. Fabio and I had been messaging inspiration, ideas, and sketches back and forth for months. One of our favorite mutual references is Erté and his work heavily influenced these looks. I am completely blown away by what we were able to accomplish. These pieces are truly iconic and stage-worthy.”

“The first one I use during my hosting segment. It’s made of 4 pieces: a bodysuit, a skirt, a belt, and a beaded necklace that extends all the way down my arms. The entire ensemble is completely hand-beaded and there is so much detail that has gone into this garment. It’s insane. The thing that I love most about it is that it’s completely unconventional in the execution of the beading, with shapes that I never would have thought to use. If you look at it from afar, it looks super symmetrical but up close the careful craftsmanship really comes to life: you see the unique, unconventional, and interesting details that the house of Prada is known for.”

Image may contain Dance Pose Leisure Activities Human Person Manolo Valds and Performer

“The second one is an asymmetrical purple velvet gown. One of the arms is beaded so heavily that we had to add shoulder pads in for support. It feels like the arm weighs a hundred pounds and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. The garment is so high drama, between the extremely intricate bead work on the arm, the rich purple shade of the dress itself, and the giant tassel that drags behind me as I walk—everything about this gown screams opulence.”

Art Deco Disco Fantasy

Image may contain Human Person Dance Pose Leisure Activities Performer and Costume

“For the finale, I was inspired by the Folies Bergère and the disco era of the 1970s. I think there was a lot of crossover there and so I wanted to play within that. I’ve been traveling a lot to India and have seen so much beautiful bead work, so I knew that I wanted to get something custom hand beaded in India for my show. I went for a batwing sleeve, quick-release gown with embroidered snakes all over it. There’s a lot of symbolism associated with snakes mythologically—they’re magical and inherently seductive, both things that I wanted for the finale. We also did a big makeup change for this look, which added a lot of impact. Luckily I had the genius and icon Pat McGrath collaborating with me on all the beauty looks for the show. For this number we had built custom Swarovski crystal eye appliqués and added tons of blush for high drama, and it also gave me that doll-like quality that I love.”

Violet Chachki Brings Coperni, Ludovic de Saint Sernin to Crazy Horse for Paris Couture Week

When Violet Chachki takes the stage for her residency at the Crazy Horse during Paris Couture Week, it will be a historic first.

She will be the first drag performer to grace the legendary cabaret’s stage, with a show running just ahead of Pride.

“Anytime that a drag artist goes into a new space, it’s beneficial for the entire queer community,” she said.

The artist has long looked to the Crazy Horse as inspiration, so getting to set a Christian Louboutin heel on the stage is a dream come true.

“It’s surreal for me. I’ve been referencing Crazy Horse for so long. It’s been on my mood board since I created my drag character, so it’s really full circle for me,” said the dancer born Paul Jason Dardo, who created her drag persona 13 years ago. “But it’s a lot of pressure. I want to do the Crazy Horse proud. I want to do France proud. I want to do my community proud. I want to do myself proud, and deliver.”

To do so she’s brought onboard longtime friends Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, the design duo behind Coperni, and Ludovic de Saint Sernin.

“I really wanted to go with them because they’re queer, they’re younger, up-and-coming and Parisian,” she said. She has been a front row regular at their fashion shows for several seasons.

The first Coperni look was inspired by one she saw on the runway during the fall 2024 collections last March, while the second look features the same technique of laser-cut feathers that Coperni used on a tour look for Beyoncé.

Famous for viral moments like Bella Hadid’s spray-on dress, Coperni is known for its use of technology, which connects with the Crazy Horse history. The cabaret was the first to use something called “lightmapping” and infrared to project costumes onto the dancers.

“They’re known for their use of technology, so it was the perfect meeting of the minds,” she said.

Chachki sent mood boards as the designers worked on the looks, which referenced touchstones as diverse as artists Erté, Pater Sato and Man Ray, plus the 1980s rock band Missing Persons, Grace Jones and Cher.

She also made a trip to the Crazy Horse’s archives, a velvet-covered library in the caverns of the cabaret that houses leather-bound books with decades of photos dating back to 1951. Some historical costumes ended up on the mood board as well.

Despite her frequent front row placement, working on the costumes resulted in her first trip to an atelier.

“It was like a scene from ‘Cruella,’” she said, referencing Emma Stone’s musical film send-up of the industry. “It was insane. There were people working in all these different rooms and apartments and sewing and people running around on phones.”

The second look came about during that field trip. The designers brought out a pair of gloves that had been created for Beyoncé’s tour opener in Stockholm, based on a look from their fall 2023 collection.

“It’s so modern, so glamorous, so unique, but still has that cabaret feeling,” she said.

Coperni will also create complete looks with shoe and jewelry options, and it will make necklaces for the dancers to enhance coordination. Chachki will also use the Crazy Horse house designer Christian Louboutin, who will design 12 custom pairs for her size 43 feet.

“Had you ever told 12- or 13-year-old me that I would have a closet full of custom Christian Louboutins? For my Crazy Horse residency? I would have died,” she said. “It’s a dream come true, and I’m so lucky that I have so much support.”

De Saint Sernin will design costumes for Chachki’s duet with male dancer Johnny Boy.

Chachki chose the designer for the partner number specifically because of his prowess with menswear, and they looked to de Saint Sernin’s fall 2024 Robert Mapplethorpe-inspired collection.

“It’s interesting because he’s done erotic men’s clothing in a way that is like very dignified and respectable. I want something that’s erotic and homoerotic and sexual but not raunchy. It has to be in a dignified, chic and fresh way,” she said. “Ludovic is so good at that. That’s his literal brand.”

For the looks, she once again dug into the Crazy Horse library, as well as her magician’s grab bag of references.

“I’m so all over the place, saying them out loud is actually funny,” she joked. To wit: Erté, French painter Pierre Molinier, Bob Mackie and some choice chainmail pieces from Renaissance Faire costumes.

The resulting looks are silver leather, metal mesh and iridescent Swarovski crystals with snatched-waist corsets and plenty of cleavage. They worked to merge several ideas and aesthetics, including taking inspiration from one of Chachki’s tattoos reinterpreted as an artwork on her dress.

De Saint Sernin started out as a fan when Chachki appeared on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and the two formed a relationship of both collaboration and friendship over the years.

“I love working with Violet because I think we share an adoration for fashion and entertainment but also live for serving queer excellence at its highest form,” de Saint Sernin said.

“It’s exactly the kind of project that I believe is so important for a brand like mine to be involved in because it’s about queer artists coming together and creating their own iconography for the future generations to look at,” he added.

“It’s amazing because he’s doing this homoerotic brand, unashamedly and with huge success — seeing someone who’s a good businessperson, who’s a great designer, and who is showcasing queer people in such a beautiful way,” added Chachki, of de Saint Sernin’s sensual touch.

“His clothes are just so chic and effortless, so it’s been amazing to be surrounded by friends that are on the same level as me, get it, get the vibe and understand what it’s like to be an elevated queer person.”

Other looks will be created by Los Angeles-based artist Disco Daddy, who has made stage costumes for Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Madonna and Lil Nas X. Those showstoppers will be in head-to-toe Swarovski crystals.

One is a vintage Erté dress sourced online that will be fully rhinestoned by Daddy, a longtime collaborator. Chachki has amassed an extensive collection of vintage over the years, she said.

“I’m a hoarder. If I’m bored or lonely, especially on the road, I’m like, ‘Let me check Poshmark, or Etsy, or eBay to fill the void,’ and I justify it by saying it’s a work expense,” she joked.

The other Daddy look is based on one of Chachki’s original designs. The former fashion design student at Savannah College of Art and Design creates most of her costumes. It’s the foundation of her performance and persona.

“For me, it’s the first step. By definition, you have to be putting something on to be in drag. So for me, fashion is, like, the most crucial step of it all. I always design the majority, if not all of my costumes, which is how I think it should be.”

For Chachki, this was the first time she has given over a lot of creative control to other designers for her stage outfits.

It’s been a learning curve for the fashion designers, as building a costume for stage has different requirements for fit, movement and securing a garment. But that hasn’t been the greatest challenge, she said. Time, instead, is of the essence.

“We are working closely and it’s all about making adjustments. But honestly, it’s been hard. The fashion schedule keeps the designers really busy,” she said, rattling off the calendar of couture , ready-to-wear, resort collections interspersed with events including the Met Gala and the Cannes Film Festival. “I don’t know how these designers do it.”

A roster of the greatest couturiers has costumed the Crazy Horse dancers over the decades, from Cristobal Balenciaga creating some of the first looks in the 1950s. Paco Rabanne presented his iconic metal dress collection at the Crazy Horse in 1966. Later, Karl Lagerfeld, Azzedine Alaïa, Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier, Roberto Cavalli and Alexis Mabille were just a few names whose designs have graced the cabaret.

Now de Saint Sernin is taking to the Crazy Horse stage in a different way to present looks that are “absolutely couture,” he said. “My own little hands worked on that crystal dress so it’s very special.”

As for Chachki’s show being held during couture week, the scheduling was a combination of wanting to hit a fashion high note as well as to place the show just ahead of Pride. “I think it’s time for the tables to be turned. I think they should come to my show,” Chachki said of the fashion crowd.

That the celebrated cabaret does not allow photos or videos inside is part of its appeal, she added. It brings an air of mystery, and a reset from social media fatigue.

“You have to come and experience it, which I love. It’s so old school,” she said. “Things like this need to be preserved and celebrated. To come and put your phone down for an hour and a half and watch something gorgeous, something done in strength and beauty and glamour, is such a treat.”

“We’re incredibly proud this Pride month to be joining forces with the Queens and The Trevor Project,” said Bette Ann Fialkov, Senior Director of Entertainment & Culture at Hims & Hers. “It’s beyond exciting to be working with the ‘No Gorge’ Pride Tour superstars on destigmatizing conversations and treatment surrounding conditions that many feel are shameful or embarrassing to have. Considering the Queens have such an amazing fan base, we are particularly looking forward to a unique and fun social campaign with Violet and Gottmik to help people embrace themselves for who they are and take action to take care of their body and mind. In addition, The Trevor Project—an organization that has had such a huge impact on LGBTQ youth—is so deserving of support and we are honored to be working with them through this union.”

Violet Chachki and Gottmik

In celebration of Pride season, the “No Gorge” U.S. Pride Tour gives queer fans and allies an intimate chance to celebrate with the Queens, Violet Chachki and Gottmik. Hims & Hers is the exclusive partner of the tour, and the company and Queens will be working together to combat stigma surrounding mental health and hair loss.

“We couldn’t be happier to be breaking down stigmas with Hims & Hers,” said Gottmik. “For myself and many others out there, mental health is a lifelong opportunity of improvement and it isn’t easy to talk about. Historically there’s been so much shame around mental health and it’s a privilege to join forces with a brand that is combating this by encouraging everyone to be loud and proud about caring for themselves, and empowering people to feel their best. Mental health issues should be talked about, and care and treatment shouldn’t be difficult.

“As someone who has dealt with the struggles of finding the right medications and even accessing a good treatment plan, I know that connecting with a professional about mental health and finding the right medication that works for you can be a life-saving action for those struggling with depression and anxiety. Working with Hims & Hers—a company that makes it simple and convenient to consult with a medical professional about medication and treatment—really hits home especially during a time like Pride month.”

“A lot of fun is had being a drag queen, but there are a few downsides to being this fabulous. Years of snatching ponytails, wigs, and using face tapes has been traumatic and stressful to my hairline resulting in hair damage and thinning,” said Violet Chachki. “Performing is my calling, and unfortunately all of the fantastic headpieces I wear have definitely taken a toll on my hair. I tried so many things to help my hair and ultimately turned to Hims when I felt it was time to seek professional help. The process of virtually consulting with a healthcare provider about my hair felt effortless, and I was provided with prescription treatment based on my own personal situation and unique needs. I’ve seen incredible results using the Topical Finasteride and Minoxidil Spray in particular; despite constant performances and wig-swapping, my hair is on its way to being luscious again—growing and feeling fabulous.”

The Trevor Project

Through this partnership as well, Hims & Hers will be providing access to free therapy services through their platform for select in-house crisis counselor volunteers at The Trevor Project – the world’s largest suicide prevention and mental health organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) young people.

“The Trevor Project’s life-saving work would not be possible without our incredible volunteer counselors who dedicate their time to supporting thousands of LGBTQ youth in crisis,” said Sofi Goode (she/her), Corporate Partnerships Manager at The Trevor Project. “Our research shows that more than 1.8 million LGBTQ young people seriously consider suicide in the U.S. each year, and our trained counselors are available 24/7, 365 days a year to offer free and confidential services to those who need a safe, non-judgmental place to talk. We’re beyond grateful to Hims & Hers for enabling us to provide many of our volunteers access to licensed mental health professionals and treatment on their platform for free. Taking care of others is always their top priority, and we want to make sure they’re also equipped with high-quality resources to take care of themselves.”

About Gottmik

Gottmik is an American Drag Queen, Makeup artist and Trans Rights Activist. Originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, Gottmik first started playing with makeup in high school, developing what would become a truly signature look. Later, moving to Los Angeles to study at FIDM, Gottmik started as a celebrity makeup artist, working with the likes of Kaia Gerber, Tinashe, Paris Hilton, Heidi Klum and Lil Nas X. “The only type of makeup that excited me was crazy, over-the-top drag makeup,” says Gottmik, whose signature makeup look is a face painted white with thin, drawn-on brows, a brilliant collision of kabuki, anime, goth, origami and something absolutely not of this world. On RuPaul’s Drag Race , Gottmik’s innate talent for show stopping glam was on full display, but it’s their fashion choices that have truly stolen the show and cemented them as a bonafide superstar. In 2021 Gottmik blasted into our social consciousness on Season 13 of RuPaul’s Drag Race (the highest-rated season in the show's history) and became the first trans man to compete on the series. Hitting a chord with millions of fans across the globe Gottmik placed runner-up and has since taken the world by storm literally jumping in fandom by 1.4 million followers in just over a year. Brands are quickly identifying this new and unique platform for sharing their message of inclusivity to the market. As Gottmik has famously said, “It’s time to crash the cistem.”

Violet Chachki to Show Atlanta “A Lot More Me” on U.S. Tour

“It is one of the largest productions of a solo touring drag queen, ever, and it’s a combination of really everything I love,” Chachki said in an interview with Georgia Voice .

She will be bringing the tour to her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, on August 25, 2021. Atlanta has always been the epicenter for Southern drag and queer Pride. The city serves as a place for queens to express themselves and for people to enjoy their performances. The “A Lot More Me” tour will also travel to six other states and then make its way up to Canada for seven more shows. The scheduled dates and tickets can be found on Violet Chachki’s website, VioletChachki.com .

Chachki describes the tour as her ultimate dream and goal. COVID-19 has impacted everyone in some way, and for Chachki, it meant postponing her anticipated 2020 tour that she had been working so hard to put together.

Once the pandemic put her dreams on pause, she was devastated, but took the time to regroup from six consecutive years of touring and performing. While she performed her tour to sold-out crowds in Europe, she has been waiting for the moment to bring the show home to the States.

“This has been years and years and years of hard work, learning, apprenticing and touring; even me just trying to figure out how a show like this could even happen,” Chachki said. “So, I’m so excited that it’s happening again.”

The art of drag can mean different things for different people, but for Violet Chachki it means escapism and a form of therapy. As a child she gravitated toward the art because she could escape into this world, a world this tour invites all into. This past year has been difficult for so many when it comes to the burdens of the current health, social and financial crises.

Whether participating in drag or watching it, the experience can be freeing and a time of celebration and self-expression.

“I think celebration is something everyone in the world can relate to now, with escapism and expression being the other two main principles of drag,” Chachki said. “Drag is a celebration of where we are at and how far we have come.”

Chachki holds many titles, one of them being an international drag performer who won season seven of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” On the show, fashion and design were the aspects she excelled in and she has since been established as a global fashion icon. Chachki described her passion for lavish costumes and said this about what the audience can expect from the tour: “It’s going to be a visual feast.”

She is also known for being a highly skilled burlesque dancer, model, and recording artist, but she has done more than just earn a number of titles. She has also been recognized as the first for many accolades in the drag world. She was the first drag queen to appear in a major lingerie campaign. In 2019, she became the first drag queen to perform in India and was among the first drag queens to attend the Met Gala.

The upcoming tour is inspired by all of these accomplishments and experiences, rooted in high-fashion costumes, glamour, femininity, and empowerment. Chachki is especially inspired by women who use glamour as a tool to show their beauty, and her stage character is indeed a representation of that.

She also pulls visual and production inspiration from Dita Von Teese, the model and burlesque dancer known as the “Queen of Burlesque.” In 2017, Chachki joined her tour, “The Art of the Teese.”

“A Lot More Me” is not only meant to exude fashion like a typical runway show. It is also meant to leave people with a memorable performance that incorporates her talents and skills. After all, she is more than glitz and glam; she was also dubbed “shadiest queen” during her winning season on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” for a reason. From laughs to jaw drops, Chachki guarantees she will give the audience everything and then some.

“Drag allows me to literally become someone else and enter a fantasy world where I can escape reality,” said Chachki. “With everything that happened in 2020, not just the pandemic, I think escapism is so important to help us take a break from reality, to have fun, to laugh and to temporarily put our minds to ease.”

“A Lot More Me” comes to the Variety Playhouse (1099 Euclid Avenue) on Wednesday, August 25 at 8pm — doors open at 7pm. Buy your tickets at VioletChachki.com.
