Our Readers' Favorite Safari Lodges in Africa in 2022

The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.

luxury african safari lodges

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

Top 10 most exclusive safari lodges in Africa

Monday newsletters  always feature  top 10 travel lists  to inspire.

Today (March 11, 2019): Top 10 most luxurious safari lodges in Africa.

Africa offers some of the  best wildlife viewing opportunities in the world. The “Big Five” (lion, elephant, rhino, Cape buffalo, and the elusive leopard) take the center stage on a safari but the smaller, less glamorous animals (like impalas, zebras and hyenas) can be just as fun and exciting to see. When it comes to safaris, nothing can beat the observation of the Great Migration in Tanzania’s Serengeti or Kenya’s Masai Mara. Other great safari destinations are the Okavango Delta in Botswana and Kruger National Park in South Africa. No wonder that Africa’s 10 most luxurious safari lodges are all located within these areas. The majority of them is operated by the continent’s three most exclusive safari companies: &Beyond ,  Wilderness Safaris  and  Singita .

There is more information below the slideshow (with reviews & Youtube clips). Do you have a favorite safari lodge that didn’t make my list? Leave a comment  or take my  poll  below.

belmond luxury safari lodges

Belmond safari lodge

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is located in the Central Okavango Delta region of Botswana , one of the most impressive natural wonders of Africa – if not in the world.

The Okavango River flows into the desert, evaporating and transpiring before reaching the ocean, forming a delta of water and sand with incredible biodiversity.

Among the luxury lodges in the Delta , Belmond Eagle Island Lodge – along with Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge and Belmond Khwai River Lodge – represents the ultimate luxury experience in this wild, wonderful area of the world.

The lodge – built on a private island in the Delta – was completely renewed in 2016. Its architecture blends perfectly with the surrounding landscape, with smooth lines, natural colors, and local crafts and materials.

Each of the 12 spacious accommodations has a private terrace with infinity plunge pool and a dreamy outdoor shower.

A truly unique feature of Belmond Eagle Island Lodge is the attention to the environment: electricity is supplied by solar power, toiletries and cleaning products are environmentally friendly.

The activities provided by Belmond Eagle Island Lodge include classic game drives on private vehicles, walking safaris , mokoro excursions and helicopter rides on the Okavango Delta, and water safaris by boat.

In this area the African wildlife is abundant and surprisingly easy to spot: elephants , big cats , buffalos , hippos and even rhinos call the Okavango Delta home, making this one of the very few places where all the Big Five can be seen in Botswana.

Chamilandu bush camp

If you’re looking for an intimate, luxury safari experience, you can’t go wrong with a stay at Chamilandu camp in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. Chamilandu, or ‘Chami’ as it is affectionately known, is part of the Bush Camp Company, a company operating seven exclusive Bushcamps throughout the park.

Chamilandu is perfect for a luxurious stay, especially for couples; it’s secluded, intimate, and romantic, with only three stilted tree houses meaning you’re guaranteed plenty of privacy during your stay. Each treehouse is furnished with a mixture of contemporary and traditional African decorations and has a raised veranda and open-fronted en-suite bathroom, both with sweeping views over the Luangwa River (one of Africa’s finest rivers for wildlife spotting ).

At the center of Chamilandu is the enclosed main area, which includes a variety of seating, the communal dining table, a well-stocked bar, and small library. There’s a campfire lit in the mornings to cook porridge and toast, also serving as a gathering spot for pre-dinner drinks. Don’t miss the ‘hide’ along the river, a thatched building on stilts with a vantage point over a small lagoon where animals will often come to drink during the heat of the day.

The food and drink options offered at Chamilandu are of high quality, including interactive brunches such as pizza making and Mongolian BBQ. The staff is incredibly friendly and professional, allowing you to truly relax and appreciate the natural beauty of this remote Zambian safari location.

Jackalberry Treehouse at Flat Dogs Camp

Zambia is a beautiful and welcoming country. It boasts an incredible diversity of natural treasures and wildlife, with fewer tourists to share it all with than in some of the surrounding African countries.

The best place in the country to see this wildlife on a safari holiday is in South Luangwa National Park. The park is home to over 60 species of safari animals  including lions , leopards , giraffes , zebras , elephants, hippos, and hyenas , and a whopping 400 species of birds. The park is also unusual in that it allows evening/night drives, giving the chance to see some of the nocturnal creatures (like the big cats ) when they are at their most active.

There is nowhere better to stay than at the luxury Jackalberry Treehouse at Flat Dogs Camp . Separated from the rest of the camp, this expansive and private luxury treehouse has a beautiful outdoor terrace that serves as a private viewing gallery on which to watch the procession of wild animals that casually wander close by, as well as boasting a telescope for star-gazing.

The two en-suite bedrooms are covered, yet remain open-sided, so you can expect to see elephants and giraffes right from your bed. There is space for four people, but you retain exclusive use if only booking one of the rooms as a two (with the other left vacant).

A stay in the treehouse comes as a package that includes all of your food on demand (with the option to dine in private at the treehouse), as well as two safari drives a day and airport transfers. You even get your very own treehouse ‘keeper’ who cleans, does turn-downs and most importantly, keeps the cheeky monkeys away while you’re not there! It all contributes to a perfect stay. Why not combine a safari with a visit to the world-famous Victoria Falls, to create a truly unforgettable trip of a lifetime to Zambia ?

Lemala Nanyukie Lodge

  • Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Contributed by Rebecca at Rebecca and the World

lemala nanyukie lodge

No  Tanzania itinerary is complete without a visit to the world-famous Serengeti . Meaning ‘endless plains’ in Maasai, hundreds of thousands of animals call these remote grasslands and savanna home – and many more make their way through during the great migrations.

While the Serengeti may be far from a major city, it doesn’t mean that you can’t find luxury here. And it doesn’t come more luxurious than Lemala Nanyukie.

One of Lemala’s newest properties, Nanyukie opened in 2018. The property is designed to blend into its natural surroundings – and nature is never far away. It’s common to see elephants and antelope from the restaurant, or even wake up to fresh lion pawprints on the footpath.

Because of this thrilling closeness to nature, a Maasai guard escorts guests to and from their rooms, no matter the time of day.

Each tented room is set away from the others, creating a sense of privacy. The standard rooms have a separate living room, bedroom and closet, and bathroom. There are no fewer than three ways to wash the Serengeti dust off at the end of the day: an indoor shower, an outdoor shower, and a standalone bathtub.

Each of these spaces has glass doors that lead out to the enormous balcony. A sunken lounge suite provides the perfect place to view the sunset, while a private plunge pool invites guests to take a dip.

A three-course dinner is served each night, accompanied by a superb collection of wines and liquor. Breakfast is an enormous buffet of fresh fruits, cereals, and an egg station.

Despite the glamorous surroundings, the staff is friendly and down-to-earth, and from your first step on to the property, you’ll experience the warmth of Tanzanian hospitality.

Loisaba Lodo Springs

Loisaba Conservancy, Kenya

Contributed by Jennifer & Tim at Luxe Adventure Traveler

loisaba lodo springs luxury safari lodge

Loisaba Lodo Springs, the latest in Elewana Collection’s portfolio of luxury safari camps situated around East Africa, sits in the heart of Loisaba Conservancy. Offering an ultra-private and luxurious safari experience, the boutique lodge offers unparalleled views over the Laikipia plains, stretching to the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya from its 12-room tented camp.

The absolute epitome of luxury,  Loisaba Lodo Springs is one of only three safari camps located inside Loisaba Conservancy. Not only are guests treated to top-notch service and all the comforts one could wish for at camp, but guests can also expect exclusivity with no more than around 20 safari vehicles out and about at one time in the 57,000 acre private Loisaba Conservancy.

Quickly becoming one of East Africa’s top safari destinations, Loisaba Conservancy is teeming with all the classic safari wildlife you could hope to spot (with the exception of the rhino), as well as Kenya’s Northern Five. Even the rare black panther has been spotted by conservationists inside the private game reserve. After days out surrounded by the endangered reticulated giraffe, herds of elephant, lions on the hunt, cheetahs chasing down prey on the plains and much more that can only be seen in Northern Kenya, guests can relax with sundowners at picturesque spots your dedicated guides find around the park.

With a focus on conservation and community education to help residents live in harmony with the big game wildlife, they share the Laikipia plains with, some of the activities guests won’t want to miss are the opportunity to meet the anti-poaching unit and their dogs. It’s a unique opportunity to witness how these hounds help dwindling animal populations rebound with their anti-poaching efforts. And certainly, a highlight will be the bush breakfast, an exclusive experience no guest will soon forget.

Luangwa Safari House

Luangwa Valley, Zambia

Luangwa Safari House, one of the most luxurious in Africa

The South Luangwa Safari House undoubtedly has the most genuine design cred of any of this pick of luxury lodges. The interiors were put together by darling of the glossies, Neil Rocher, and combine plenty of stylish touches with an environmentally sound approach to the use of natural materials.

Safari-wise, it’s got impeccable credentials, too – set at the foot of the Chindeni Hills, it looks out over a seasonal lagoon. After a hot day out in the bush, you can slip into the infinity pool with a cocktail as the sun sets and watch the animals come down for their evening drink. A special moment.

Nottens Bush Camp

Sabi Sands, South Africa

Nottens Bush Camp exterior shot

If you are looking for a really special stay during your safari in South Africa, you should consider Nottens Bush Camp in Sabi Sand Reserve.

The lodge has, unlike many others, no fence and no electricity so you are really staying in the bush (in one of the nine exclusive, private suites). A guard brings you to your room after dark and we experienced why they do so. One night we almost stumbled over a hyena on our way to our room. We were so shocked and happy that we had a guard with us. Another night my parents woke up and heard a strange noise in front of their room. They got out of bed to take a look and there was an elephant eating the plants that stood on their porch.

From your room in African style, you are overlooking an open area with a waterhole, so sit on your porch and enjoy the panoramic views and the wildlife passing by. You will see zebra, elephants, antelopes, and many other animals pass by.

Nottens Bush Camp is one of the original game lodges in South Africa and is known for its highly experienced rangers. and the area is great for spotting leopards.

This family-owned lodge goes the extra mile. After our first safari, we entered our room. All the candles and lanterns were burning, the bathtub was filled, rose leaves everywhere and a bottle of South African Vonkelwijn (champagne) was waiting for us.

In the evening all the guests are sitting at a big table to share the most thrilling stories about their safari.

They organize two game drives a day. One at 05.30 in the morning and one at 15.30 in the afternoon. In between those safaris you can relax beside the pool or enjoy a massage at the Nature Spa.

Each large tent features a luxurious bed, indoor and outdoor bathroom, and a private veranda with unbeatable Delta views. As one of the many luxury touches, there’s also a choice of two sherry decanters for a pre-dawn game drive pick me up!

The common areas include the main lodge with an interactive food and coffee bar, an extensive pool area (which doubles as a game viewing area for the lazy!), a dedicated massage sala, and a spectacular open-air fire pit to while away the evenings under the stars.

Okonjima Plains camp

Okonjima Plains Camp is located between Windhoek and Etosha National Park in Namibia. The camp was once a private farm that was converted into a conservation area, committed to the long-term survival of Namibia’s largest carnivores. As a 200 square kilometer private nature reserve, the camp is home to abundant wildlife.

With a unique location inside an extremely diverse conservation area, Okonjima Plains Camp is a special destination in Namibia . But, the luxurious accommodation, top quality service, and native surroundings make it a thoroughly rewarding experience. Beautiful safari-chic chalets indulge guests with unparalleled luxury. Large glass windows and canvas panels can be opened for unlimited views of the lush African savanna.

The Private Bush Suite includes a private chef, personal guide, and swimming pool in a stunning location on the edge of a water hole. Onguma Fort is a unique safari lodge, built in the style of a Moroccan adobe fort and standing right on the edge of Etosha National Park . The lodge has the self-styled ‘best sunset views in the whole of Namibia’, overlooking a waterhole in the beautiful semi-desert of the Etosha Pans

Phinda Mountain Lodge

Phinda Game Reserve, South Africa

Submitted by Claudia Tavani at My Adventures Across The World

luxurious private pool at phinda mountain lodge

Phinda Game Reserve , in KwaZulu Natal, is home to some of the most beautiful, luxurious lodges in Africa. The best by far is Mountain Lodge. As the name says, this is located in such a way to afford beautiful views across the bushveld to panoramic mountains.

The lodge is blissfully isolated on top of a hill. Once there, you will walk to the common areas where you will find the dining area, where a decadent breakfast and lunch, as well as afternoon tea are offered every day. So much care is taken in the selection of the ingredients that you even have a choice of several types of coffee and roasts. The common area is also where the bar is located, with a seating area directly facing the mountains, for incredible views.

On the way to your room you will find the beautiful pool and the spa, perfect for a relaxing afternoon – before you drive away on one of the game drives.

Rooms are incredibly comfortable, with large beds with a pillow menu; a sitting area with a fridge and all sorts of drinks and snacks; a deck with a plunge pool – a favorite of local wildlife which is free to roam the grounds (it is not uncommon to spot nyalas and at times even elephants drinking from the pool!), and a very spacious bathroom with a large shower and a Victorian-style bathtub.

At Phinda Mountain Lodge you will feel welcome, pampered and you will be able to fully relax while enjoying nature and the unique wildlife of this part of the country.

Rekero Camp

Submitted by Jolene at Go Wander The World

alfresco dining at luxurious rekero camp

In the heart of the famous Greater Masai Mara you’ll find Asilia Africa’s Rekero Camp. This camp has basically got it all: wonderful staff, great rangers, amazing tents and a view that’s one of a kind.

Upon arrival you’re welcomed with some cool drinks after which they’ll show you your luxurious tent. All tents overlook the Talek river so you can check out the wildlife right from your terrace.

Speaking about views, one of the prime features of this camp is the large deck in front of the main tent. This is where you’ll have a drink in the afternoon and where you’re meals are served. The main deck overlooks an important crossing point of the Talek river when the Great Migration of wildebeests is at its best. This means theoretically you don’t even have to go on a game drive to see the spectacle that the migration is.

When you do go on a game drive you’ll have one of the expert rangers accompanying you. Since the camp is situated quite remotely you’ve got the feeling you’ve got the park to yourself. The famous vast plains of the Mara are just outside the camp and attract grazers and thus predators. Lions, leopards, cheetahs : you name it and the rangers will try to find them for you. It’s also good to mention that they don’t just focus on the big five since there’s so much more to see, learn, and explore in such an amazing park.

Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge

sandibe okavango dry camp at sunset

Sandibe Okavango

Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge sits in the heart of the Delta, on the edge of a waterway in a wildlife-rich concession bordering Moremi Game Reserve.

The organic design of this luxurious safari lodge blends into the surrounding forest of wild palms and fig trees. The main lodge area features stairs opening into a high ceilinged, copper-toned and glassless space overlooking the Delta. This central dining space has areas leading off it, including wooden viewing decks, an upstairs bar and lounge, and an elevated walkway to a higher viewing platform. Other communal facilities include a gym and private massage room, along with the impressive log boma

The 12 guest suites are designed like weaver nests, peeping out from the forest canopy and raised from the papyrus-lined Delta banks. Each suite comes equipped with picture-perfect views, private plunge pool, and a fireplace for the winter evenings.

Saruni Samburu

Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy, Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

Contributed by Heather at Conversant Traveller

saruni samburu luxury safari lodge

Saruni Samburu is a high-end luxury safari lodge in the Kalama Wildlife Conservancy on the edge of Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya.

Built high up on a ridge, this remote lodge overlooks the vast wilderness plains of the Kalama which are surrounded by the iconic dome-shaped hills of Samburu. The views here are stunning, and animals can be seen moving about in the bush without even leaving the comfort of the lodge.

There are six private villas each with their own verandas, beautifully decorated communal dining and living areas, and two infinity pools that look out over the reserve. With a stylish yet unpretentious feel, Saruni Samburu  is a luxurious and friendly safari experience.

Game drives in the Kalama and Samburu are with local warrior guides who know everything there is to know about the wildlife and landscapes of this remote area. Bushwalks in the Kalama Conservancy are possible as well as night drives, because this is a private reserve rather than a national park. Samburu is well-known for its elephants, and large herds can often be seen congregating around water holes during the dry season.

Bush breakfasts on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro river are a real treat too, with front row seats as the animals come to drink. A safari up here is a real contrast to ones in the Masai Mara and is far less crowded.

Serengeti Migration Camp

Serengeti, Tanzania

serengeti migration camp terrace views

The clue’s in the name. Slap-bang on the wildebeest migration route, there aren’t too many better-placed safari lodges in Africa than the Serengeti Migration Camp. Sweeping herds of wildebeest aside, the camp – and a ‘camp’ in the truest sense of the word it genuinely is – is made up of the most luxurious tents imaginable, packed with comfy leather Chesterfields, hardwood floors, and safari-chic roof fans.

Singita Sweni Lodge

SIngita sweni luxurious safari lodge

SIngita Sweni

Located in Kruger National Park,  Singita Sweni Lodge  epitomizes the definition of a lux eco-safari stay. The lodge is located on 33,000 acres of exclusive concession land on the banks of the Sweni River. This meant that hippos, crocs, elephants, and other wildlife can often be spotted meandering past the lodge.

Singita Sweni Lodge offers an intimate setting far away from the crowds associated with Kruger National Park . There are only seven large luxurious suites on-site and each one is designed to bring the outdoors in. They have large floor to ceiling windows, big wooden decks, and modern decor with natural elements incorporated into the design.

For us, one of the highlights of staying at Singita Sweni was their strong focus on sustainability. They have an ethos of “touching the earth lightly” and their efforts were visible in every element of our stay. All meals are crafted with seasonal produce and sourced from local suppliers. Plus, Singita Sweni Lodge is involved in a number of conservation and social initiatives in the community. One such project was the creation of their solar power plant. Its implementation has meant the lodge can save close to 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

Of course, we also loved the morning and afternoon game drives. We had many wonderful sightings of lions, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffalos, hippos, waterbucks, and other antelopes. Plus we came across the most unique sighting of them all – a unique white lion, spotted only in this part of Kruger National Park!

If you are looking into a safari in Africa we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Singita Sweni Lodge for an eco-lux experience. It’s a truly one of a kind destination.

Sossus Dune Lodge

Sossus Dunes Lodge, one of Africa's most luxury safari lodges

Sossus Dunes Lodge,

The luxurious Sossus Dune Lodge  is an eco-friendly lodge in the deep red desert of Namibia’s famous Namib Naukluft National Park . It’s the only lodge within the national park, so one has to stay in this beautiful place to enjoy the sunset or sunrise in the desert. The other alternative is camping, and both the lodge and campsite are run by the Namibian government.

The lodge is located at the base of a mountain, raised several feet off the ground to allow space for tumbling rock, flash floods, wildlife, and plants. Each unit has two round rooms connected at the entrance – a luxurious bedroom and a bathroom. Both rooms have a whole section of windows looking out into the national park with no restrictions. Each unit has its own views, private balcony, self-sufficient solar panels, and water heating systems.

The large common halls include dining, social room, library, and a swimming pool. They serve a set menu for dinner which can accommodate a vegetarian diet but not vegan. We brought our own food because I’m vegan. On special request, the restaurant can pack breakfast for a sunrise trip to the dunes which is much appreciated.

Overall, it’s an excellent place to stay if you’d like to enjoy the most special times of the day in the majestic red dunes, and the chance to spot some of Namibia’s famous desert animals .

Stanley Safari Lodge

Victoria Falls, Zambia

luxury safari lodge - stanley safari lodge, pool and set table at sunset

Before you even so much as clap eyes on the rooms, Stanley Safari Lodge in Zambia has one major feather in its cap: a location right next to one of the world’s most remarkable natural phenomena, the Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls safari lodges are amongst the most coveted of all safaris experiences in Africa, and from the terrace at Stanley, you can see the spray rising from the falls into the air.

Fortunately, the rooms more than live up to the amazing setting, as well – a series of grand, colonial-style cottages with views out across the Zambian plains, they’re everything you could ask for in a luxury lodge for safaris in Africa.

Tarangire Treetops Safari Lodge

Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

Tarangire Treetops Safari Lodge exterior

Not many safaris in Africa give you the opportunity to spend a night up in a tree. At Tarangire Treetops Safari Lodge, however, rooms are hidden away high up in the canopies of a series of huge Marula trees. And quite apart from the novelty value, this treetop vantage point gives you amazing views out over the plains and, of course, fantastic wildlife-spotting opportunities including elephants, lions, giraffes, zebra, and giant ostriches.

Tonbabezi Lodge

The Victoria Falls area of Zambia is home to a number of luxury safari lodges and none more so than the all-inclusive Tongabezi Lodge. Nestled on the banks of the Zambezi River, Tongabezi offers a number of lavish accommodation options, each boasting a private deck from which you can gaze out onto the river and animal spot to your heart’s content.

The lodge’s river cottages are beautifully designed, with large glass windows, high ceilings, and unique features such as bathrooms with a view. After a long day out on safari, you can sink into a bubble bath in one of their gorgeous clawfoot bathtubs, whilst watching the sunset over the river.

The houses at Tongabezi are even more opulent, with some offering private plunge pools and gardens. Both the cottages and lodges have secluded dining areas on their decks and they also each have their own attendant, who acts as a personal concierge and will take care of you for the duration of your stay.

Tongabezi’s ‘all-inclusive’ approach doesn’t just include beautiful accommodation, food, and drinks. The lodge offers a range of activities as standard, including game drives, sunrise/sunset boat trips, and romantic dining experiences.

The lodge is unique in that it also owns a private island on the Zambezi river, on which it operates a luxury eco-lodge. Sindabezi island features just five open-sided chalets, which all offer views across the Zambezi river and into the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Perfect for those who want to get away from it all, Sindabezi island is completely off-grid, but rest assured, you can still enjoy hot water and gourmet cuisine.

Zebra Hills Safari Lodge

Manyoni Private Game Reserve, South Africa

Contributed by Jo Ramani at WanderWithJo.com

Zebra Hills Safari Lodge - super luxury safari lodge

Zebra Hills is nestled in the private game reserve of Manyoni in Zululand, and is a sure shot delight for wildlife enthusiasts. Being part of a private reserve gives the lodge owners and guides a lot of flexibility in terms of game watching and safari hours. This is one of the highlights, alongside the spectacular zebra themed decor in the bedrooms, common areas, bar, and dining room.

The perks of living in a private reserve are aplenty, but my favorite bit was enjoying traditional braai in the evenings whilst you wait for the lions to come for a refreshing sip of water in the adjoining water hole.

This is the only place where I have watched lions on foot. Yes, that’s right. The waterhole is just across the swimming pool/barbeque area and if you stay put, it is easy to spot a few thirsty beasts loitering around to quench their thirst.

With no restrictions on safari hours, the night safaris offered umpteen nocturnal sightings with our top game sightings of the day being three cheetah cubs on a kill followed by a charging black rhino. Such sightings are a dream for true wildlife lovers and Zebra Hills, with its ultra-luxury sleeps and skilled naturalists, made our dream vacation come true.

That’s your lot. What do you think – have you indulged in a luxury safari lodge that you think should be on this list? If so let us know by joining in on the comments section below.

I have never written a review, but this place is so beyond fabulous I just had to. I have extremely high standards – even four seasons can sometimes disappoint me – but this place is literally out of Ralph Lauren's photo shoots...

Incredible lodging and service

Stayed for three nights to see the great migration. Truly on par with the highest end safari experiences like Singita. Tents are impeccable, service is over the top. Meals cater to any whim. Don't hesitate!

Staying in Ultra-Luxurious African Safari Tents in Central Seregenti

One Nature Nyaruswiga Serengeti provided a luxurious tent encampment for our family's trip to the Serengeti in July 2019. We had promised our four grandchildren that we would take them to the Serengeti once they were old enough to remember...

I cannot say enough good things about one nature. It was magnificent and the staff were all top notch. I loved the British feel and the staff went above to make us feel at home. We only stayed for 2 nights but wish it could have been longer...

Wildlife roaming free…

Many of our lodges are within some of the top wildlife regions of the country; the Timbavati and Klaserie private game reserves. These reserves both form part of the Greater Kruger conservation area, with open borders to the Kruger National Park. This is South Africa’s premier wildlife sanctuary, an incredibly rich ecosystem where you encounter wildlife, from the majestic to the minute. All playing a part in the natural circle of life.

EXPAND YOUR SENSES

Wide Open Spaces…

The iconic African wildlife are compelling, especially in their natural habitat and free to roam. But for many, our expansive landscapes are a fundamental attraction.  There is little to compare with the wild open spaces of Africa with its majestic mountains, vast lakes and the crashing waves of the Indian Ocean, silver with fish.

COMMUNITY AND CONSERVATION

Preparing for the future…

Many visitors are conscious of the impact that their behaviour has on conservation and nearby communities. You want to know that your visit is making a positive difference.

Wilderness and wildlife will not be able to exist and be sustained unless we support the well-being of our neighbouring communities. Both directly through local employment, and indirectly, through our community partnerships.

9 incredible luxury family safari lodges for the ultimate African adventure

Melissa Klurman

Giraffes and zebras and elephants — oh my! What child wouldn't want to go on an African safari and see these wondrous animals up close, in the wild and in their natural environments? (Not to mention, lions, warthogs, antelope, cheetah, jaguar, wild dogs and the myriad other wild things that call the African bush their home).

How, though, do you take the kids on a bucket list African safari and have not only the space, but also the comforts and attention, necessary to keep you all happy?

The answer is simple: luxury safari lodges built for families.

These incredible accommodations run the gamut from elegant villas to multi-bedroom glamping tents. What they all have in common is plenty of room to spread out, ultra-luxurious furnishings, gourmet dining and top-tier service all within arm's reach of some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

Take your family along to these nine fantastic lodges in Africa.

Singita Pamushana Malilangwe House — Zimbabwe

luxury african safari lodges

Perched high on a sandstone ridge overlooking the shimmering expanse of the Malilangwe Dam sits Singita Pamushana, the only safari lodge located in the exclusive, 130,000-acre Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve.

I've been on dozens of safaris and found this safari lodge to be a truly special wild corner of Africa: You'll never see another safari vehicle as you explore the reserve populated by endangered black rhino and large populations of elephant, cheetah, wild dog and leopard.

Captivating views of wildlife-filled wilderness stretch everywhere you look, but the camp itself is a family-friendly oasis of paved walkways (a rarity at African safari camps), protected from wildlife, so you can walk without an escort in the evenings.

Also perfect for families: The five-bedroom, five-bathroom Malilangwe House, an expansive, exclusive-use African home overlooking the Malilangwe Dam.

Among the highlights of this sophisticated retreat are a large, private infinity pool, a spacious dining room and living room with floor-to-ceiling windows, and a chef's kitchen — complete with a personal chef. It's designed with a mix of traditional Shangaan materials mixed with a bright palette that makes the house feel fun for kids instead of stuffy.

Another perk of staying at Malilangwe House: A private vehicle and dedicated driver and ranger will take your family on twice-daily game drives tailored to suit your personal interests, whether that's looking for majestic birds or herds of elephants.

Age considerations and rates: Children of any age can join on game drives, but they must be over 16 and older to participate in a bush walk.

All-inclusive rates start at $12,390 per night for up to six guests, or $14,380 per night for seven to 10 guests, at off-peak times (Jan. 6–31, May and Oct. 1–Dec. 14) and rise to per night rates of $16,220 for up to six guests and $18,880 for seven to 10 guests during peak periods (July and August and Dec. 15 –Jan. 5).

Time + Tide Chongwe House — Lower Zambezi, Zambia

luxury african safari lodges

For all the comforts of home, but with a dramatic change of scenery, Time + Tide's two-story, four-bedroom, four-bathroom private Chongwe House feels a bit like if the Swiss Family Robinson hired an interior designer to create an upscale treehouse home.

Open-air rooms incorporate natural elements such as rocks and stone slabs and look like they've been carved from a secret tunnel of caves.

There's also furniture created from fallen winter thorn trees, couches perched on river rocks, slab rock coffee tables, open-air bathtubs that seem to float over the river, outdoor rainfall showers open to the sky and terraces that jut into the open air. It's a dream destination for kids made complete when elephants follow the river walk by the private pool.

A dedicated house staff — including a cook and a private guide — will help plan your days and accompany your family on not only game drives, but also on treks that take advantage of the unique river setting such as canoe safaris, boat cruises and angling trips to catch tiger fish.

Age considerations and rates: Children of all ages are welcome at Chongwe House; minimum age for walking safaris is 12.

All-inclusive rates start at $900 per adult, per night (minimum of six adults) in April, May and November, and $1,200 per adult, per night in June to October (the property is closed the rest of the year). Children 4 to 18 pay 50% of adult rate, children 3 and under stay free.

Natural Selection's Safari House — Etosha, Namibia

luxury african safari lodges

For a desert-focused safari destination, Namibia thrills with the ability to see both black and white rhinos along with fascinating desert species such as black-faced impala, oryx and the elusive Hartmann's zebra, in addition to lion, cheetah, eland and antelope species.

To experience a desert safari with your family, Natural Selection's aptly, if not creatively, named Safari House, a private use farmhouse in Etosha Heights Private Reserve, bordering famed Etosha National Park, fits the bill.

The farmhouse offers a home-away-from-home feel with overstuffed couches and lots of comfortable spaces where little ones can unwind after a long day listening for the crashes of white rhinos the area is known for.

Don't think, though, that luxury isn't at play at this three bedroom, three bathroom farmhouse. There's a fully fenced and enclosed swimming pool and adjacent lush garden — ideal for kids to safely play in — and a full kitchen with a private chef who can serve meals catered to your family's tastes inside in the dining room or outside under the open Africa sky by your boma (fire pit).

A private safari car and guide will tailor game drives to your family's interests either on excursions to the waterhole just a mile from the house or traversing the private reserve.

Age considerations and rates: Children of any age can join on game drives, but they must be over 12 and older to participate in a bush walk. The entire property can be yours for $2,100 per night, all-inclusive, for up to six adults and three children.

&Beyond's Tengile River Lodge — Sabi Sands, South Africa

luxury african safari lodges

Two enormous free-standing (and air-conditioned) suites are connected by a covered walkway to create a self-contained family suite at Tengile River Lodge nestled in Sabi Sands, the exclusive private reserve that borders famed Kruger National Park. From this posh lodging perch, you and your family will be able to view animals that are drinking from and following the Sand River, which runs alongside the camp and right outside the family suite.

This double unit comprises two suites, so your family will get not one but two pools, plus two spacious decks with sunken living rooms, two outdoor showers and two oversize tubs that could also be mistaken for plunge pools. When booking the family suite you can also arrange a private safari vehicle and guide for the duration of your stay so you can look for the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) and explore the 5-million-acre Sabi Sands conservation area (roughly the size of New Jersey) in comfort.

Age considerations and rates: Children ages 12 and up are welcome at Tengile. The all-inclusive rate for the family suite is $6,385 per night for four people.

Asilia's Jabali Private House — Ruaha National Park,Tanzania

luxury african safari lodges

Tucked into Ruaha National Park, an expansive wilderness area that's nearly half the size of Switzerland, is Jabali Private House, a stylish stand-alone property that gives your family the exclusive run of the three-bedroom home and the surrounding area without encountering other guests nearby. The private house includes two bedrooms lightly decorated in a light and airy, cream-toned palette so you can focus on the views outside instead of the spaces inside.

Whether you're lounging in beanbag chairs on the deck or floating in your infinity pool, you'll be able to keep an eye on the bordering Ikuka escarpment where large herds of elephants can often be seen. Jabali Private House also comes with the included services of a private chef who can offer cooking lessons in the house's kitchen as well as a curated menu for your family.

A private vehicle and guide will cater game drives specifically to your family's interests.

Age considerations and rates: Children ages 5 and up are welcome at Jabali.

Low season (November–Dec. 19 and Jan. 6 –March 14) the all-inclusive rate is $4,375 per night; high season (July to October and Dec. 20–Jan. 5) it is $6,130 per night (rates are for entire house).

Great Plains' Mara Nyika — Maasai Mara, Kenya

luxury african safari lodges

For true "Out of Africa" vibes, it's hard to beat this luxurious tented camp tucked into the lush green plains of the Maasai Mara's Naboisho Conservancy where you and your family will have a front-row seat for the great migration of thousands of wildebeests and zebra. Although you'll be able to see wildlife here any time of year, the best chance to see peak numbers during migration are August through October.

Mara Nyika is a Relais and Château property that demonstrates why tented "glamping" safaris in Kenya became the industry leader. Picture copper soaking tubs, leather couches and rich silk carpets all within the canvas walls of ultra-plush tents.

Mara Nyika sleeps just 14 guests across an area spanning 50,000 acres — so you won't have to share the camp with other people. Unique to this kind of tented safari, the camp has two new family suites comprising two bedrooms each. In such a remote spot, it's a special perk to have your kids staying under the same roof in spacious accommodations, and not in cots crammed into the corners of a tent.

Activities here include not only morning and night game drives but also the unique opportunity to visit a local Maasai Mara community. One more reason: You can take the kids on a hot air balloon ride across the Maasai Mara to spot wildlife.

Age considerations and rates: Children ages 6 and up are welcome at Mara Nyika.

All-inclusive rates per two-bedroom family suite per night range from $3,600 for off-peak (April–June 14; November–Dec. 19) to $7,050 for peak season (June 15–Oct. 31, and Dec. 20–Jan. 10).

Toka Leya, Wilderness Safaris — Victoria Falls, Zambia

luxury african safari lodges

A visit to Victoria Falls, also known as Moasi a Tunya ("The Smoke that Thunders"), is a popular part of an African family safari. When I visited with my own daughter, I chose Toka Leya , a Wilderness Safaris property, for its fabulous location perched right on the Zambezi River and its family tents that comprise two en suite bedrooms with four-postered, canopied beds and a shared living room with an enormous deck to relax on.

We found it to be a very laid-back stay after some hectic travel — until, that is, the monkeys started jumping on our tent roof (actually a real perk of this safely fenced lodge). Another family perk of the river-front lodge — a real pizza oven serving up hot and gooey cheese-topped, wood-fired dough that we enjoyed to a chorus of hippos nearby.

Since this is a lodge and not a hotel, there are plenty of activities included in the rate: game drives into a nearby wildlife reserve; boat trips on the Zambezi River; and yes — the best for last — escorted trips to Victoria Falls, where you'll feel the mist of the falls as you witness the thundering waters up close.

Prepare to get wet — very wet — in peak season, February to June, but having a private escort means someone will be waiting with a nice, dry towel and a bottle of chilled water once you get back to the vehicle.

Age considerations: Recommended minimum age for Toka Leya is 6 years old. All-inclusive rates range from $684 per person, per night (Jan. 6–March 31) to $870 per person, per night (June through October).

Royal Malewane's Africa House — Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa

luxury african safari lodges

If your safari plans include an extended family group for a special reunion or celebration journey, this is the safari you've been looking for.

Royal Malewane's Africa House (part of The Royal Portfolio) in South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park bills itself as a "bush villa" and it delivers the type of grandeur that description conjures. There are six en-suite bedrooms, all with outdoor showers and decks, and space for 12 guests to spread out and fully relax. Since the house is completely self-contained, the kids can wake up early or play without worrying about disturbing anyone. (Also note that there is an additional room to house a nanny or private guide, photographer or pilot.)

The home is elegantly furnished with antique furniture, carved four-poster beds, plush silk pillows and Persian rugs, but it will still feel comfortable for kids since there are pops of color and whimsy, outdoor day beds to relax on, and a private pool.

A dedicated staff is included with a stay at Africa House, so you'll have a personal chef to plan meals to please all palates, plus two private cars and guides if you've brought nine to a dozen people, or one guide and safari car for groups of eight or less.

On those game drives you'll have a fantastic chance of spotting the Big 5 of African lore that Kruger is renowned for: lion, elephant, leopard, Cape buffalo and rhino.

Age considerations and rates: Children of all ages are welcome at Africa House.

All-inclusive rates start at $14,000 per night for one to eight guests (with one private vehicle) and $17,000 for nine to 12 guests (with two private vehicles)

The Stable Cottage, The Manor at Ngorongoro — Tanzania

luxury african safari lodges

A rolling verdant grass lawn leads up to The Stable Cottage at Ngorongoro , a whitewashed Dutch Colonial manor house that feels more like a country estate in Europe instead of the famed safari conservation area that's attracted travelers since the time of Teddy Roosevelt.

Don't worry though — just beyond the comfy confines of this spacious private home is the wild Africa you've come to explore. Here, your kids will have plenty of space to spread out across two floors, featuring a master bedroom and twin bedroom — each with their own individual bathrooms — a family lounge area downstairs, and another twin room, plus a bathroom and playroom upstairs.

Along with an elegant home to call your own, The Stable Cottage comes with the option to book a full "game package," which I highly recommend. With this package, your family with receive a private vehicle and driver/ranger for guided gamed drives to search for wildlife like lions and zebra in Ngorongoro Crater or Lake Manyara wildlife area. More uniquely, you'll also be able to participate in horseback riding on the estate, a truly special way to explore this corner of Africa.

Age considerations: Children of all ages are welcome at The Stable Cottage.

Rates range from $2,729 per night for all-inclusive use of the cottage, including all safari outings (April 1–May 31) to $3,826 per night (July 1–Oct. 31 and Dec. 20–Jan. 3).

One&Only's Gorilla's Nest — Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

luxury african safari lodges

For safari aficionados, there are few adventures more thrilling than trekking up a volcano to search for the elusive and endangered silverback gorillas in their natural habitat.

For families looking to expand their safari travels beyond their vehicle, gorilla trekking ranks high as the penultimate safari, a thrilling and immersive opportunity to view nature on foot. You'll hike into the deep jungle with your small safari group and expert guide and then trek into the mountains until you rendezvous with one of the remote families of gorillas that the rangers work round-the-clock to protect. You may have to work a bit to finally meet these incredible primates, but it's a moment you and your family will never forget.

When you're not adventuring into the bush, you'll have a luxurious base for your exploring at the incredibly swank One&Only's Gorilla Nest . The jungle-chic chalets are tucked into the eucalyptus forest and make you feel like you're living in the trees. The family option, the two-bedroom Forest Lodge, stretches over nearly 1,000 square feet and includes two bedrooms: one giant primary suite and a second room that can either be for two children 12 and under (although note that gorilla trekking is ages 15 and up) or one "adult" over 12. This is a sleek modern hideaway, but it still offers old school safari touches such as a fireplace and a standalone bathtub with forest views.

Age considerations: Children 10 and up are welcome on property. Note that visitors should be comfortable in rugged walking and hiking environments — the only way to see the endangered mountain gorillas is to trek into the mountains.

The all-inclusive property rate for a family of four starts at $7,800 per night. Note that while on-property activities are included in the nightly fee, gorilla trekking fees of $1,500 per person, per trek are paid directly the Rwandan government and are an additional cost.

  • Just Back: A Luxury Botswana Safari

luxury african safari lodges

Botswana is one of Africa’s most incredible safari destinations, with exceptional year-round game viewing, beautiful natural scenery, unique safaris on land and water, and renowned luxury safari camps.

We recently returned from a private Botswana tour that featured some of the top luxury safari camps and incredible wildlife encounters in the Okavango Delta—including the legendary Chief’s Island—and the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve.

luxury african safari lodges

Botswana’s commitment to conservation, including government regulations that limit the number of tourists and safari camps, makes the country an exceptional safari destination. The exclusive, high-end camps are few and far between, offering travelers a very exclusive safari experience with outstanding wildlife viewing and immersion in pristine landscapes.

luxury african safari lodges

We began in the vast Okavango Delta in northern Botswana, one of the world’s largest inland deltas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its annual flooding and rich biodiversity.

luxury african safari lodges

Its freshwater wetlands and lush grasslands teem with abundant wildlife, including cheetahs, elephants, lions, wild dogs, giraffes, hippos and more, offering incredible game viewing.

luxury african safari lodges

Safari camps in the Delta are only accessible by light aircraft, and the bird’s eye view of the landscape flying in offers a breathtaking introduction to the region.

luxury african safari lodges

We stayed at one of our favorite luxury safari camps in the Okavango Delta, Vumbura Plains North. Located on a private concession on the edge of a floodplain, it has an incredible wilderness setting, luxurious accommodations and excellent cuisine that highlights local, seasonal ingredients.

luxury african safari lodges

The contemporary safari style throughout the camp draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape with natural materials, local textiles and ceramics and neutral colors punctuated by greens and blues.

luxury african safari lodges

Constructed of wood, glass and canvas to blend in with the surroundings, the climate-controlled rooms are set on elevated walkways and offer incredible views of the surrounding plains.

luxury african safari lodges

Each room has a private deck, outdoor shower and plunge pool from which to observe the local wildlife, especially hippos.

luxury african safari lodges

The gourmet cuisine is a highlight.

luxury african safari lodges

Land-based safari activities with expert guides included walking safaris and game drives in open vehicles, during which we saw a thrilling range of wildlife, including cheetahs, zebras, elephants, giraffes and a plethora of birds.

luxury african safari lodges

We also enjoyed water-based excursions in a motorboat where we could experience the beautiful water lilies and wildlife along the waterways.

luxury african safari lodges

Vumbura Plains also offers year-round outings in mokoros (traditional dug-out canoes) due to the ever-present water levels.

luxury african safari lodges

We especially enjoyed the unique water-based sundowners , floating cocktails and snacks at sunset. Observing the waterways turn different colors in the changing light while learning about local culture and history was a highlight of our safari experience.

luxury african safari lodges

We also spent time at Jao Camp, a stylish, luxurious camp on an island in a private concession that re-opened in 2019 with a completely updated, eco-friendly design.

luxury african safari lodges

A wooden walkway connects the nine luxury suites of thatch and canvas, spa, swimming pool, gym, lounges and dining areas.

luxury african safari lodges

We continued to Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, a remote private concession in northern Botswana in between the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park, known for its diverse habitats of lush wetlands, lagoons, woodlands and large populations of elephants.

luxury african safari lodges

They also have herds of buffalo, lions, giraffes, hippos, leopards, wild dogs and antelope, and hundreds of bird species that thrive in the wetlands and woodlands.

luxury african safari lodges

In Linyanti, we stayed at Duma Tau Camp, a rustic-chic safari camp set in an unspoiled landscape overlooking a lagoon in an area known for its high concentration of elephants.

luxury african safari lodges

With just luxury eight tents and four additional tents at Little Duma Tau, its sister camp connected by raised wooden walkway, it offers an exclusive, off-the-beaten path safari experience.

luxury african safari lodges

Sliding glass doors, elevated decks, and private plunge pools with vistas over the water create an indoor-outdoor aesthetic, with local textiles and hand-crafted mosaic tiles underscoring the local design aesthetic.

luxury african safari lodges

There is also a spa, swimming pool, fitness center and a juice bar.

luxury african safari lodges

We enjoyed dining on a barge in the Linyanti River, sundowners by the lagoon and great game viewing on land and water.

At Duma Tau, we can also arrange for our travelers to enjoy helicopter safaris, walking safaris, hands-on conservation experiences and fishing.

luxury african safari lodges

Another great safari camp option in the Linyanti is King’s Pool Camp, a luxury camp with nine thatched-roof tents overlooking a tranquil lagoon.

luxury african safari lodges

We concluded our private Botswana tour at Mombo Camp, a luxurious safari camp on exclusive Chief’s Island, the largest island in the Okavango Delta. Situated at the mouth of the Delta in the untouched wilderness of the Moremi Game Reserve, home to the Big Five and famous for its high concentration of predators, this is arguably Botswana’s premier safari destination for year-round wildlife viewing.

luxury african safari lodges

Sitting above the water level, Chief’s Island attracts a diversity of wildlife, especially plains animals, that migrates to the island’s savannahs and woodlands when water levels rise in the surrounding waterways.

luxury african safari lodges

The exclusive Mombo Camp is comprised of two intimate camps, Mombo (nine tents) and Little Mombo (four tents), on a private concession connected by an elevated boardwalk.
