The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, a 15-acre waterfront historical attraction, allows visitors to learn about the first Spanish settlers who arrived in the 1600s and the native Timucuans who were here to greet them. There's a working archeological dig on the property and several re-created Spanish and Timucuan buildings and dwellings.

It's also just a beautiful spot to relax, enjoy the views over the water from the 600-foot Founders Riverwalk or from the Observation Tower, sample the waters from the natural spring (Ponce de Leon's legendary Fountain of Youth?), and let the kids feed the roaming peacocks.

The Fountain of Youth offers a variety of shows and living history reenactments designed to entertain and educate visitors -- the Planetarium, the two-story Discovery Globe mapping the routes of the early explorers, the Timucuan Village, and the reconstructed First Mission of Nombre de Dios.

The Fountain of Youth Archeological Park is the site of the first Spanish settlement in the New World. Founded by Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565, this is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in North America. Before the Spanish came to La Florida, the Timucuan Indian village was established at this site for nearly 3,000 years. In 1513 Juan Ponce De Leon claimed Florida for the Spanish crown, though no colonies were successful here until Menéndez arrived in 1565.

1. the fountain of youth & spring house.

First things first. Take a drink of water from the legendary spring and see if you’ll enjoy eternal youth. Learn the history of Ponce de Leon’s search for the Fountain of Youth. The myth of the Fountain of Youth is actually a Taino Indian legend about a spring that was said to exist on the island of Bimini and a river, in what became known as Florida that would restore youth to those who bathed in their waters. Ponce’s quest was not to settle the new land, but to explore for gold and riches; however, he ultimately claimed “La Florida” for Spain. See the nostalgic dioramas depicting the first encounter of the Timucua residents and Spanish explorers.

2. Timucua Indian Exhibit

Ponce de Leon arrived from Spain in 1513, but the area’s history began long before that. Archaeological discoveries, including hut foundations and relics, point to Timucua habitation on the site for about 3,000 years. The Timucuans thrived in the abundant surroundings, hunting with bows and arrows, cultivating corn and pumpkins, and fishing from land and canoes.

Pay a visit to the Native Timucua Village of Seloy, where you can learn about how these Native Americans lived and hunted. Learn about their customs and sophisticated social structure.

3. Planetarium

Visit the planetarium, watch the show, and learn about how early explorers used the constellations to guide their long voyages at sea.

4. Discovery Globe

The glowing, two-story-high Discovery Globe traces the routes of Spanish explorers from Europe, across the vast Atlantic to the New World.

5. Exploring the Park

There’s a lot to see and do on the park’s scenic 15-acre waterfront grounds. Stroll beneath large live oaks, rest on a bench, enjoy a picnic under the shade trees, and wander along a 600-foot-long observation platform over the marshes. Among the wildlife you’ll encounter are peacocks and native birds. Don’t be surprised if you hear a loud boom – a Spanish cannon is fired regularly.

What is the history behind the fountain of youth and the park?

When Spanish explorer Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles came ashore in 1565 to claim Florida for Spain, he and his crew established the first St. Augustine settlement along the shores of what is now this beautiful park. The land was the home of the Native Timucua Indians in the village they called Seloy. And they lived together peacefully for a time.

One of the first actions taken by the Spanish explorers was to serve a meal of celebration from food provisions stocked aboard their ship. They invited the Tiumucua Indians to join them. This was the very first feast of Thanksgiving held on September 8, 1565, in St. Augustine, 56 years before the pilgrims of Plymouth enjoyed a meal together in gratitude of their first harvest.

To learn more about the rich history of the birthplace of St. Augustine, annual archaeological digs take place at the Fountain of Youth each year. This historic land serves as both a sacred place of the past, and an attraction that immerses visitors in the Colonial experience.

Local Tip: Check out the view from the 35-foot watchtower and learn about how a light burning in a watchtower led to a fateful raid on the town in 1586 by Sir Francis Drake and his men.

What To Expect When Visiting The Fountain Of Youth In St. Augustine, FL + A List Of Fun Things To Do There

Photo of author

I recently visited the Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine. I thought I would share some helpful tips in case you’re planning on visiting and a list of fun things to do while you’re there .

This famous landmark is one of the most popular places to visit in Florida.

Welcome sign at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in St. Augustine, FL.

Legend says Spanish explorer Juan Ponce De Leon was searching for the Fountain of Youth during his explorations of Florida in the early 1500s. And this story gained foothold hundreds of years ago — that’s when the Fountain of Youth was referenced by Spanish historian Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas in a popular 1601 account of Ponce De Leon’s first voyage.

Tordesillas wrote that the vitality-restoring water source could turn “old men to boys.” The legend captivated millions in Europe. As Spain relinquished Florida in 1819, the state joined the Union in 1845, and the story captured American hearts, too.

Growing up in Florida , I heard about the legendary landmark my whole life — but I hadn’t visited the Fountain of Youth in St. Augustine, FL until I was in my mid 30s .

Where Is The Fountain Of Youth?

Fountain of Youth archaeological park in St. Augustine FL

The Fountain of Youth is located in the archeological park compound on 11 Magnolia Avenue.

It’s just a few steps off San Marco Avenue — one of the main roads running north and south through the touristy area of St. Augustine.

The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park itself sits on 15 waterfront acres.

There’s onsite parking at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, but a lot of people park their cars at the Historic Downtown Parking Facility garage (at 1 Cordova Street) and hop aboard a tourist tram.

The tourist trams in St. Augustine are operated by 2 rival companies:

  • Old Town Trolley Tours
  • Red Train Tours

Both offer easy hop-on, hop-off access once you buy a pass.

The tram passes usually include merchant and attraction discounts — so be sure to check and see if there are any combo deals currently being offered by the tram services.

And check the St. Augustine Visitor Center for discounts on Fountain of Youth tickets , as well!

Once you’re in Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park, you’ll be able to get around and see pretty much everything in 3 or 4 hours .

Drinking From The Fountain Of Youth

The Fountain of Youth is located inside a coquina building called The Spring House  — near the entrance of the archaeological park.

Once inside, you can take a small plastic cup (provided), fill it with water from the spring, and drink from the Fountain of Youth!

fountain of youth tour st augustine

The water has a slightly sulfurous, mineral flavor. In fact, there are reportedly more than 30 minerals in the Fountain of Youth water.

This video shares some great history about the Fountain of Youth:

Well, the bald spot on my head hasn’t gotten any hairier since I drank water from the Fountain of Youth… but there may be a delayed response.

Still, I’m glad I finally got to see the Fountain of Youth and taste its water.

I was a happy camper with this alone. Yet there was still much more to see and do at the park…

Other Fun Things To Do At The Fountain Of Youth Archaeological Park

Here are some of the other attractions and exhibits I enjoyed at the Fountain of Youth Archeological Park:

#1 – Peacocks

One of the many beautiful peacocks at the Fountain of Youth park.

The first things you’ll see upon entering Fountain of Youth Archeological Park are a pride of peafowl. These large birds scurry across the grounds, roost in the trees, and entertain visitors throughout the day. I had just as much fun watching the peacocks go about their business as I had enjoying the other attractions at the park!

#2 – Navigator’s Planetarium

This fascinating show explains how Ponce De Leon and other explorers from his time used the stars to navigate across the waters and discover new lands .

#3 – Discovery Globe

Discovery Globe is a 30-foot-tall replica of Earth that illustrates the routes that Ponce De Leon took.

This theater hosts a show featuring a 30-foot-tall replica of Earth vividly illustrating the routes Ponce De Leon and other explorers took to the New World, the original extent of the lands of La Florida, cities and settlements, and the various universities these settlers and their immediate descendants founded.

#4 – Blacksmith Exhibit

The blacksmith demo at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park show you how everyday metal items (like construction nails) were made back then.

Watch a period actor demonstrate how everyday metal items (such as construction nails) were made using fire reaching 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit, precision skill, and a little sweat.

#5 – Nombre de Dios Mission

This palm-thatched, open cypress beam structure is a reconstruction of a church that was built on these grounds by Franciscan friars in 1587.

#6 – Spanish Lookout Tower

A replica of the Spanish lookout towers that were used at Fountain of Youth park.

A 3-story-tall wooden lookout tower at the Fountain of Youth grounds is a replica of the many watchtowers the Spanish constructed along the shore in the early days of settlement to keep guard from attacks.

#7 – Canon And Musket Firing

Fountain of Youth actors with their muskets.

Actors in period costume demonstrate the incredible fire power that the early Spanish explorers would’ve used in defending their settlement. The canon and musket firing demonstrations take place in close proximity to the Spanish Lookout Tower and occur periodically throughout the day . (Oh, and be sure to cover your ears… those cannons and guns are LOUD!)

#8 – Timicuan Village

The Timicuan village gives you an idea of how people lived back then.

A journey through the Timicuan village brings you into the everyday lives of the native peoples who inhabited northeast Florida at the time of Spanish settlement in the 1500s. The Timicua and Spaniards coexisted for a period, but tensions rose and European diseases overwhelmed the native peoples — the last of whom died in the early 1700s.

#9 – Menendez Statue

Ponce De Leon may have landed in what we now know as St. Augustine in 1513, but the city of St. Augustine itself was founded in 1565 by another Spanish explorer named Pedro Menendez de Aviles. A majestic 6-foot-tall statue at the park honors the local icon.

You should be able to see all of the attractions at the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in half a day — if you plan carefully.

On the day I visited, the shows and demonstrations were scheduled in tight, consecutive order. This made it really easy to see everything without much lull in between the shows and other activities.

Spoiler Alert About The Fountain Of Youth In St. Augustine

There's still a bit of mystery surrounding Ponce De Leon's landing.

The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park in St. Augustine is the site where many claim Ponce De Leon made his Florida landing in 1513.

Did you know?… The park also contains a freshwater well that many believe was also sought by Ponce De Leon and was referenced by Tordesillas in his work,  Historia general de los hechos de los castellanos en las Islas y Tierra Firme del mar Océano.

Some say that Ponce De Leon may have landed closer to present-day Melbourne Beach — about 140 miles south of St. Augustine.

There’s much conjecture about the historical connections at Fountain of Youth Archeological Park. But there may be some truth behind the legend after all.

So, get this… Excavations in the 1990s on the park grounds turned up remains of the first Spanish settlement — including a cemetery and fortifications!

Does that mean this really is the Fountain of Youth? The legend lives on…

Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is the site of St. Augustine's original settlement. Here, you'll learn about the Spanish settlers who arrived in the 1500s, as well as the Timucua, a group of Native Americans who resided in current-day southern Georgia and northern Florida. The Fountain of Youth, a mythical spring believed to have anti-aging properties, can be found in the park, as well as a planetarium, a blacksmith shop and a replica Timucua village. On the park's grounds, visitors will find white and blue peacocks (nearly 30 reside within the park).

Though some travelers found the attraction to be lackluster and not worth the entrance fee, most said it's an important archeological site worth checking out. Must-do components of the park include drinking from the Fountain of Youth and watching a cannon firing demonstration. Keep in mind that this spring has sulfur water, which emits a rotten egg odor.

Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park sits about a mile north of the historic downtown area of St. Augustine, so you'll need to drive or take the trolley to get to the site. Free parking is provided on-site, and the trolley's No. 22 stop drops off and picks up visitors at the attraction's entrance. The park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., but keep in mind that same-day tickets must be purchased by 5 p.m. Adult tickets cost $19.95, and discounts are available for seniors and children ages 6 to 12. Kids 5 and younger can enter the attraction for free.

All tickets include access to the property's exhibits and demonstrations, restrooms, cafe and gift shop. Check out Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park's website to learn more.

The Fountain of Youth park is an interesting place. It's old, it has a bit of something for everyone. Some of the things I enjoyed. --Cannon fire: They had a bunch of old rusted hulks, but also a breach loader that they fired. At the same spot, they had some diagrams of how these cannons were built and how they worked. The guys running the exhibit were friendly and had a lot of interesting information. --Planetarium: This is a smallish planetarium, but it had a neat little show about how ships navigate using the stars, and they even had a variety of example tools like the sextant and a couple of model ships. They turn the night sky back to the way it appeared on April 2, 1513, the night before Juan Ponce de Leon landed on the shores of Florida. --Discover globe: The globe is 30 feet high and lit up. It uses lights to show the paths of the various exploration ships. Old tech, very cool. --Peacocks everywhere! Lots of screaming and you can buy peanuts with quarters and feed them. There are other exhibits such as blacksmith, Timucuan villages, boat house, river walk, and being able to drink from water out of the fountain of youth. Do I feel younger? Nope. The water tastes a lot like the tap water. There are a lot of historical artifacts from the Timucuan Indians, the Spanish, etc. If you're looking for something family friendly and historical, it's a neat place to go.

Sip from a mythical spring while exploring native and colonial life at this roadside attraction. While there isn't any factual evidence that Ponce De Leon walked these grounds, roadside America has laid its claim to this beautiful park since the 1860s! While De Leon might not have been there, archaeological digs found that indigenous people and a Spanish colony used the site. Today, it's a family-friendly attraction with live demonstrations, passionate storytellers, and lots of discovery. Watch a canon blast, hear a musket fire, and see a blacksmith demonstration all within an easy hour. This is a delightful slice of old Florida that is a quick activity to get your kids off their devices and into history. Parking is accessible in the big lot. A BBQ stand is at the gate so that you can eat on-site.

significant waste of time and money. This is a very run down tourist trap with "exhibits" that look like they have never been renovated and barely cared for. The informational placards were faded and while informative, ignored the full history of the area and the natives impacted by this explorer. Its was sad to see bus loads of kids, banned in Florida from learning actual historical facts lined up to drink from the "fountain of youth" then trotted around to learn more half truths. Seeing a cannon fire, a musket demonstration and a blacksmith hardly is novel nor substantively educational. The best part was the bar-b-que sold at the entrance (no admission fee required for that). Yes they are dog friendly in the sense that they are allowed everywhere and there were 2 water bowls located on the property, but if you want something worth your dogs time, take it to the beach.

We are so surprised by your comments! We have years and years of research by archaeologists, anthropologists, and other highly educated and informed professionals supporting the information we share with our guests. Additionally , we host school children from every school district in the state, and receive many, many compliments for what we present here. Our advertising and marketing are all very clear about what we offer here; we wonder why you chose to visit the Park if none of that appealed to you? Lastly, thousands of dogs visit the Park each year, most with owners who thank us and comment on how much they appreciate our hospitality to their pets. We are sorry that you did not enjoy our time in the Park, but we are glad you liked the BBQ.

OK, this is a must do if you want to "drink from the Fountain of Youth." That was really the main (only) reason we stopped in. Admission was a bit steep in my opinion. There were a number of things to see and a demonstration on cannon firing that was going on to get a good impression of early life in St. Augustine. Thirty minutes max.

fountain of youth tour st augustine

This was an enjoyable place to visit with small presentations along the paths. Some areas need attention but others were obviously renovated or new construction and very nice. The main attraction maintained a historical appearance. The musket firing demonstration was very informative and there is also a cannon firing demonstration that we didn't see due to inclement weather. Other things at the park include tiki huts, clean restrooms, an old church reconstruction historical markers, a planetarium display that was a bit antiquated, and a pier. The native plants and trees along the mulched path are in need of renovation. Great for families.

I have been to St Augustine's several times and never stopped here, but decided this was the time. I have traveled a lot and done lots of tours and self tours, but this one did nothing for me. The planetarium show was bad, and they let people bring dogs in, so we had this big husky near us panting loudly the whole 13 minutes. The exhibits are lame and I just felt I wasted $30+.

A day of history, walking around, peacocks and of course a sip of water from the Fountain of Youth! Yep, you get to take a sip of the water that Ponce De Leon hunted for. Can you tell?? The fountain was a little cheesy, complete with statues of the explorers and early inhabitants. But still cool to see. We also got to sit in on a black smith making a nail, which was actually a very interesting part of the exhibit! There were also reconstructions of a Native American village and their huts, a beautiful church, and extremely knowledgable staff that were more than willing there to answer questions. It has all the makings of a great school field trip, but if you are looking for a little history while visiting, it was a pretty nice spot. We happened to go on a cold and rainy day, but I would say 90% of the exhibit is outdoors, so try coming on a nice sunny day so you can enjoy the walk. Enjoy and happy exploring!

Great historical park! Many detailed historical presentations ! Plenty of parking but be ready they close at 5 and there are wedding renters!

Boat house

You get to drink from the fountain, but be warned it tastes like well water!- cause it is. This place is really cool, unfortunately, we didn't get to stay very long and there was much more to see, however we got to see the globe, planetarium, blacksmith, and walkway. lot os peacocks- they are not afraid of people. It is older for sure, but pretty cool. There is a lot to see and interactions, it's a bit older but a great experience and I would definitely like to come back to explore more!

We visited 4/26/23 and it was great. We loved the planetarium, and the giant globe show. It's old, but cool and kitschy. If you want to visit something that is "Old Florida" this is it. They have free roaming peacocks, some interactive interactions where they shoot off a cannon, they have a Native American couple talks about activities and ways they told time. And MOST importantly The Fountain of Youth. You are Welcome to take a cup and try it. While I didn't get any younger, I still enjoyed it a lot and would definitely go again.

OLD TOWN TROLLEY TOURS

St Augustine Old Town Trolley We Are video

What Our Guests Are Saying

Kanga was amazing.

We rode your trolley the weekend before Christmas during the daytime and Kanga was our driver/guide. To say that she made the tour would be an understatement. She was amazing! The entire tour was really cool, but her narration really made it special. We have returned home… but the memories we made down there will always be with us…

Wow - best money spent on my trip!

…We had 3 different tour guides Robert the Pirate, Allie Cat, and Summer. All were amazing friendly and informative. I assume they have to memorize things but the way each one spoke and talked was different and made the trolley even better. Thank you and wanted to brag about how great they were and how they helped make our visit even more amazing!

Best thing we did...

Our group of eight just spent 2 days in St. Augustine… best thing we did was buy 2 day passes for your trolleys. We could not have been more pleased with your services and how helpful and entertaining all of your staff were to us… Well done by all!!! Don’t know what you folks feed these people for Breakfast, but I want some! Thank you all for a very enjoyable trip.

Jerry felt like family...

Jerry is the best driver and most amazing addition that we have met on your team! He genuinely cares about the people that he transports and makes the time to ask about where they are from, etc, but also cares enough to remember them. Jerry felt like family by the time we were finished with our vacation. Having a team that is as amazing and customer-friendly is a blessing, but having a member of that team like Jerry is a true blessing…

A highlight of our trip

We had the pleasure of visiting St. Augustine and Old Town Trolley Tours was a highlight of our trip. The conductors are wonderful, and their expert narration was a delight. Truly educational AND entertaining. We’d like to give a special shout out to John, our Beach Bus conductor, who is a sweetheart! Thank you OTT …you will see us, again!

Old Town Trolley made our whole trip!

My mom and I enjoyed our trolley experience tremendously! It went off without a hitch! The guides were all very informative and added to the sightseeing experience. We were able to see and do so much more because of the trolley. We were also pleased to see that you have wheelchair-accessible options, as next time we will be traveling with a wheelchair user. We have already recommended you to several people.

I have never enjoyed myself so much

The Guides were not only very entertaining but extremely educated on the area. Each one had a little more to add. I left some pictures at the old jail booth from our first trip. Love It. B Back Soon, Thank You.

Michael is a real GEM!

I enjoyed every minute of his tour. I rode the trolley all over town for three days and he was the best guide. Now I want to return to St. Augustine and bring all my friends to ride the trolley.

Fantastic staff

I just wanted to leave a note about a fantastic staff, including our driver, Jim. But in specific I want to mention a specific person who truly made our trip extraordinary and one who I will always remember. His name is Charles and he’s from Tennessee. He was just so friendly and nice and gave me great ideas for places to see while on the tour and in the city…

We want to thank Scooter...

We arrived here in St. Augustine on Monday and attempted to cross the street from our hotel to the welcome center. In our attempt to cross the street, purchased our tickets, and were ready to cross the street again… we met Scooter who offered us a safe ride to our hotel…

Kit Kat was so funny and informative

…Had Kit Kat as our tour guide and she was so funny and informative. Very engaging! We had several tour guides over the course of the two days, but we are very happy to report that our trip ended on a high note with Kit Kat. Thank you so much from Chicago!

Will definitely do it again next time

The tour was awesome, we loved all of the things we got to see, and it really helped us acclimate to all of the things in St. Augustine we could see and visit. Our tour guide Summer was amazing, she knew her stuff and was funny and entertaining! We loved her, and couldn’t have asked for a better guide and driver. Kudos Summer and thank you for making our experience so great! Will definitely do it again next time we go to St. Augustine!

Young Again: Rediscovering Florida’s Fountain of Youth

May 4, 2018 by Sally White

Looking for the Fountain of Youth

Ponce de Leon- famous explorer and  spring hunter arrives in the land he dubs ‘La Florida’

Juan Ponce de Leon waded to shore with his men.  It had been the first stretch of sandy beach he had seen in a long time- but it was the the palm huts that had caught his attention. Nestled among the thick  vegetation, the huts almost blended into the scenery. Where there was civilization- there was food- and water. He and his men approached the settlement with caution. A young native girl gave out a shout and ran towards them carrying a hollowed out gourd. Water sloshed from the gourd as she stopped before him. She lifted the gourd to him, a gift to the new-comers. Juan took the gourd and lifted it to his lips. The water was cool and sweet- unlike any other he had ever tasted. He knew he had to see the source of this unique water.

The year was 1513. It was Easter-time and the Spanish explorer had become the first Florida Spring Hunter.

Florida’s Fountain of Youth

Whether that was how Ponce de Leon’s first visit to Florida began will always remain a mystery, but somewhere down a long shady avenue of oaks, tucked behind a wall of coquina in the northeastern coastal corner of Florida quietly sits one of the most important sites in American history.

This place remains shrouded in shadows, forgotten by textbooks, colored with a kitschy past, and overshadowed by the louder colonial settlements further north. The original settlement of St. Augustine was founded 42 years prior to Jamestown, and yet schoolchildren will spend months and many DBAs (document based assignments)  focused on the Virginia colony, while this tiny corner stoically stands in silence, wrapped in mystery, history, and legends: Florida’s Fountain of Youth.

Young Again: Finding Florida's Fountain of Youth

Finding History at the Fountain of Youth

The Fountain of Youth  is argued to be Florida’s oldest tourist attraction, with guest-book signings that date back to 1868. But the truth of the matter is that this quiet little corner of northeastern Florida has been welcoming visitor’s since the 1500’s. There is a mineral-rich water source on the land- though whether Ponce de Leon was in search of rejuvenating life-waters of the Fountain of Youth during his expedition from Puerto Rico in 1513,  or he was just happy to have any fresh-water after a long sail has been the subject of many debates.

Ponce de Leon- Florida’s First (non-native) Spring Hunter?

History & Legends at Florida's Fountain of Youth

Young Again at the Fountain of Youth

Although the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park gives a nod to the original old Florida attraction past in the coquina buildings of the Discovery Globe Theater, Spring House, the Timucuan Burial House, and the Navigator’s Planetarium,  it’s the parks newer interactive additions that have garnered a younger-set of explorer’s interests.

These latest exhibit areas allow visitors to step back through time and fully experience America’s oldest settlement, while learning some important lessons of the past. Reenactors are hand to guide you back through time- and help re-define the notion of boring history-lessons.

You can wander through a Timucuan village, a nod to the original native Indian settlement of Seloy and explore the interior of an ‘anoti’ family hut, or a ‘nihi paha’ traditional meeting place and learn about fishing and farming techniques used thousands of years ago.

Looking forthe Eternal Spring at Florida's Fountain of Youth

The view from the Spanish watchtower at The Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park

Climb the steps of the reconstructed Franciscan Nombre de Dios  Mission church for a birds eye-view of the cypress and palm interior.

Visit the iron-mongers for a lesson in forging, the boat-builders to learn the art of  wood-bending and the gun-smith to witness a musket firing.

At the Spanish watchtower  the Spanish soldiers fire their cannon on the hour. You can learn the art of ax-throwing or all about the crossbow.

Climb the watchtower or take a stroll along the Founders Riverwalk for views that will make you realize why so many people wanted to call this little corner of Florida home.

Drinking the Waters of the Fountain of Youth

I first visited The Fountain of Youth as a gawky teenager. It had been a kitschy tourist attraction back then, and my parents piled my siblings and I into our station wagon for the drive to St. Augustine.  I remember how excited we all were- and how we joked about turning into babies if we drank the water. The water smelled like rotten eggs. My dad assured us that it was sulfur- not eggs. Out of bravado, and wanting to out-do my sisters,  I  downed the water from the little dixie-cup.  The 30+ minerals in the water give it that unique flavor.  Like kissing the Blarney Stone, it’s that one thing you have to do if you are visiting St. Augustine- try those mythical eternal waters.  Though none of us reversed our aging that day, people do comment on how young I look, even to this day 😉

Today you can still taste the waters of the Fountain of Youth- it’s included in your admission fee, and if you want to take some home, they sell bottles of it in the gift shop. The water still comes directly from the Florida aquifer, but because of dropped pressure in the aquifer, it no longer bubbles up as it would have done when Ponce de Leon set foot on the land. Now they pump it up and filter it, making it more palatable- so you’ll be getting the same mineral rich water without having to suffer that sulfury-taste.

The Fountain of Youth, St. Augustine, FL

Description

This used to be a natural spring, but as the town grew, the water level sank and they drilled a well over 200 ft. deep. It doesn’t bubble up naturally anymore, but it’s from the original aquifer.

Very disappointed with this spring…It costs $12 to get into the park now and when in there I found out they are “required by law” to add chlorine to the water…Definitely would pass on this one….

' src=

Would it be Beneficial Still to take this water if one had a chlorine filter? And is there such a thing as a portable chlorine filter?

Fun Quote: I’ve been to St. Augustine quite a bit, love the history. While on a tour one day, the older guide drove us past the Ponce’ Deleon (sp?) Fountain of youth and said he’d been “drinking this water his whole life and just seems to be getting older.” 🙂 I gotta chuckle out of that anyway, thought I’d share!

How to Collect Spring Water

' src=

Drinking pure spring water is one of the most important things we can do for our health. Our bodies are over 99% water at the molecular level, so water affects every aspect of our biology. Yet, not all water is created equal. Almost all the bottled spring water available is pasteurized for shelf stability, which neutralizes many of the powerful health benefits such as increased hydrogen, healthy probiotics, and crystalline structure. For more about why unprocessed spring water is the best water to drink, read this .

The best way to guarantee you are getting real unprocessed spring water is to collect it yourself. This is a short and simple guide filled with information about how to gather spring water. We will cover how to find a spring, how to collect the water, how to honor the spring, how to store the water properly and other tips.

FindASpring.org  is the best resource for locating a spring near you. However, not all springs are on the map. First, check the map to see if there is a spring in your local area. If there is, look at the reviews and comments. Has anyone shared helpful information about flow rate or posted a water test result? Is the spring in a pristine area? Do a bit of research and make sure the spring is safe to drink from. If you have any doubt about the purity, don’t risk it and get a water test, HERE. If you don’t see a spring on the map in your area, there still might be some that aren’t listed yet. First, ask the older generation who have lived in your area a long time if they know. You can also ask people in your community who might already get spring water such as people at a health food store or at a farmers market. Another great option is to view A US forest service map, where many springs have been marked. You can view these maps through the Gaia GPS or All Trails hiking apps on your phone. The map overlay you want is USGS Topo. Not all are easily accessible or ideal for drinking, but some are and it can be a fun adventure to find them. We have found over half a dozen great springs this way.

Once you’ve found your spring, figure out how you are going to gather the water. Is it right on the side of the road and easy to access or do you have to hike to it? We recommend storing spring water in glass instead of plastic to preserve the purity of the water. It is better for the environment, your body, and the water. Even BPA free plastic has toxic chemicals that can leach into water and cause health issues. If you do want to use plastic for safety reasons when filling at the spring, we recommend transferring the water to glass as soon as possible. FindASpring is sponsored by Alive Waters, which offers beautiful reusable glass. They have a 2.5 gallon option, which is a convenient size for carrying that isn’t too heavy. They also sell handles that you can use to transport the jugs even more easily. If you have to hike to access the spring, we recommend putting the water jugs into an extra large backpack to hike the water out with ease. We use Osprey packs that hold 2 jugs each. You can also use a wheelbarrow or even a stroller depending on how easy a walk it is.

When you get to the spring, remember to first give back before you take. Springs are considered sacred in indigenous cultures around the world for their life giving water and also as a connection to the inner earth. A powerful and simple way to give back is to clean up. Is there any trash that needs to be collected? Could you move any dead leaves or sticks to improve the flow rate? Show up in service. Some other wonderful ways to give is with a moment of expressing verbal gratitude, singing songs to the water, offering the water an ethically sourced crystal, a feather, or some other physical gift. Flowers are a popular and beautiful thing to offer, but please be careful to source organic ones as most flowers from the store are sprayed with pesticides and can be toxic to put near a spring. Also, flowers can attract bugs as they decay, so it can be best to offer them to the flowing water directly or a little downstream from the spring head.

When gathering the water, fill the jug as close to the spring head as possible, never gather downstream. Be very careful as wet glass is extremely slippery. Make sure the lid is securely fastened. When transporting the spring water home, the jugs can sometimes slide around the car. Secure them in place or wrap them with towels or something so they don’t crash into each other.

How you store your spring water is essential. It is not pasteurized like spring water from the store, so it will start growing algae if left in direct sunlight. This is good because it means it’s alive! If the water you drink can’t even support the most basic life forms, how do you think it will support your body? Store your water in a cool, dark place such as a dark corner, pantry or closet. The fridge is ideal if you have room. Some people prefer to filter their water through a Berkey filter before drinking, but if the spring is pure, it’s not necessary. We drink our spring water completely unfiltered.

How long the water stays good for depends on how cold a temperature it’s stored at. Spring water is best fresh. We personally do not prefer to drink spring water past 2 weeks old. However, we know other people that will drink it at a month old. It’s great to get in a rhythm where you know how long the water lasts you and put your collection day on the calendar in advance.

I believe that water is calling us to reconnect with her in the deepest way, to gather our own water. Just like our ancestors did. Our ancestors didn’t have fancy water machines. They also didn’t create villages or settle where there was no water. Water was revered as the center of the community and the nodal point around which life could spiral out and take root.

Here’s to restoring the sacred connection with the waters of life.

St. Augustine: a historic and gastronomic gem in Florida

L ocated on the northeastern coast of Florida, St. Augustine is a city where time seems to have stood still, offering a blend of historical charm and modern living.

The cobblestone streets, colonial buildings, and historic sites are all witnesses to the past that tell the story of this city, while beaches and culinary delights attract visitors seeking new experiences.

Whether you’re interested in history, outdoor activities, or gastronomy, St. Augustine has something to offer everyone. And the best part is, once you’re there, you might not even need a car!

Here are the 16 best activities to do and our tips for planning your stay.

1. Hop on the Trolley

2. visit the historic downtown, 3. learn more about the civil rights struggle in st. augustine, 4. visit the castillo de san marcos, 5. the fountain of youth – it really exists, 6. the most beautiful street and the oldest tree in st. augustine, 7. visit the lightner museum, 8. historic tour of flagler college, 9. ximenez-fatio house museum and “i lived here as well”, 10. villa zorayda, 11. st. augustine lighthouse, 12. take part in an eco tour with st. augustine eco tours, 13. beaches, 14. anastasia island, 15. enjoy a tasting of spirits and wine, 16. join a food tour, planning your stay, exploring the oldest city in the united states.

Founded in 1565 by the Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, St. Augustine is known as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States.

It boasts over 450 years of history and has been inhabited by Native Americans, Spaniards, French, British, and Americans, each leaving their mark and weaving a diverse tapestry reflected in the sites you can visit today.

One of the best ways to explore the city is by taking a trolley tour. It may be touristy, but the guide’s commentary and narration will help you get acquainted with the various neighborhoods of this small city and its significant historical moments.

During the tour, you can hop on and off as you please, especially if you want to visit a specific site. The trolley also includes access to a shuttle to the beach, which is convenient if you don’t have a car.

The historic heart of St. Augustine consists of charming little streets, colonial buildings, and small artisanal shops. It’s especially easy to explore on foot, particularly since St. George Street is pedestrian-only.

St. Augustine also played a crucial role in the civil rights movement. Be sure to visit Lincolnville, a historic neighborhood founded by freed slaves after the Civil War, and Fort Mose, the first legally sanctioned free black settlement in the United States.

In Lincolnville, you will find the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center , which traces 450 years of African American history.

Fort Mose, on the other hand, is the first free black community in the United States and welcomed freed or escaped slaves long before the Underground Railroad.

Although nothing remains of the old fort, visiting it allows you to learn more about this lesser-known chapter of history. It is important to note that Florida, having been under different occupations over the years, experienced varying concepts of slavery. Under Spanish occupation, Fort Mose welcomed runaway slaves from the American colonies and also served as a defense post against the British.

This majestic fort, built by the Spanish in the 17th century, is the oldest masonry fort still standing in the United States. It is made of coquina, a sedimentary rock primarily composed of shell and coral fragments. A visit to the Castillo offers a spectacular view of Matanzas Bay.

The site of the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park has long been reputed for its miraculous waters. It is here that Ponce de León discovered waters with mythical properties. In addition to drinking the water from this fountain, which has a questionable taste but may bring you eternal youth, you can also visit the gardens, see the peacocks, and explore exhibitions on local history.

The entrance to the Fountain of Youth Park is located on Magnolia Avenue, reputed to be the prettiest street in the city, and for good reason! With its majestic oak trees, it feels like you’re in Savannah , Georgia.

The oldest tree in St. Augustine, The Old Senator, is located in the parking lot of the Howard Johnson hotel. While heading there from the historic downtown, you can make a quick stop to admire this majestic oak, which is over 600 years old.

Explore the Museums and Historic Buildings

The Lightner Museum , located in the beautiful building of the former Alcazar Hotel in St. Augustine, is a must-visit for art and history enthusiasts. This museum houses an extensive collection of 19th-century objects, including artworks, furniture, and musical instruments. After exploring the museum’s various collections, take a break at the Café Alcazar, situated in the hotel’s former swimming pool.

Formerly the Ponce de León Hotel, which hosted wealthy clients, this spectacular building is now a private college. You can take a guided tour to visit the dining hall with its 79 stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany, the Flagler Room, formerly the Grand Ladies’ Parlor, featuring numerous artworks, objects, and antique furniture.

The courtyard and the grand hall, with its impressive dome, are open to the public and can be visited for free.

Built in 1798 by Andrez Ximenez, this three-story house became a boarding house in 1830 before being converted into a museum in 1946. Be sure to book your visit during the performances of “ I Lived here As Well ,” which focuses on the lives of the slaves and servants who lived in this house.

The performance is a true journey through time, where each room recreates a scene from the lives of these people at different periods. Some of the scenes are based on real people, making the experience even more touching and interesting. It is brilliantly executed, from the choice of costumes to the actors’ performances.

Inspired by the Alhambra in Spain, Villa Zorayda astonishes with its choice of furniture and decoration, as well as its collection of art and antiques. The centerpiece of this collection, which sends shivers down your spine, is the Egyptian rug, over 2,400 years old and woven from cat hair. It is said that anyone who walks on it is cursed, as evidenced by the stories you can read during your visit.

Not only does climbing the 219 steps of the St. Augustine Lighthouse provide a superb view of the surroundings, but you can also visit the small adjacent museum.

The exhibits cover topics such as World War II, local maritime history, and the importance of shrimp fishing in the region. After your visit, take the opportunity to enjoy some seafood at the Salt Life Sea Shack.

Outdoors and nature

St. Augustine is located on the coast, so it would be a shame not to take advantage of the water. In addition to offering kayak and catamaran tours, Eco Tours provides ecological excursions to discover the local wildlife and flora.

During these sea outings, you might have the chance to see dolphins, birds, and even manatees in their natural habitat. Having had the opportunity to take such a trip with Captain Zach McKenna, we can highly recommend this activity. An excellent communicator and engaging storyteller, he will give you a new perspective on the water and the life that surrounds it. Private tours are also available.

Even though St. Augustine is situated right on the waterfront, the beaches are located on the outskirts of the city. But don’t worry, there are nearly 42 miles of fine sandy beaches with crystal-clear waters. Among the most popular are Ponte Vedra Beach, Anastasia State Park, and St. Augustine Beach.

This barrier island is a haven for nature lovers, offering hiking trails, bike paths, and wildlife-watching opportunities. You can enjoy beautiful white sandy beaches, explore Anastasia State Park with its hiking trails and picnic areas, or go kayaking and paddleboarding in the calm waters.

Gastronomic Experiences

A visit to the St. Augustine Distillery is definitely not to be missed. In addition to offering free tastings, you can tour the distillery either through guided tours or on your own (also free). You’ll learn about the history of this former ice plant (the oldest in Florida) turned artisanal distillery and the process of making spirits. A stop at the shop is highly recommended as their spirits are excellent, especially the gin, which has received over 40 awards, and the bourbon.

Fill Your Own Bottle Experience One of the unique experiences offered at the St. Augustine Distillery is the opportunity to bottle your own bourbon. This hands-on activity allows you to fill, seal, and label your own bottle, making it a memorable souvenir.

As you go through the process, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and care that goes into creating their award-winning bourbon. Having had the chance to try it, I highly recommend this experience. It’s a wonderful keepsake to take home.

On the other hand, the San Sebastian Winery offers tours and tastings of locally produced wines.

Join a food tour to taste the culinary diversity of St. Augustine. From local dishes with Spanish, Caribbean, and American influences, your palate will be delighted by this gastronomic experience, allowing you to try different restaurants in a group setting, with a glass of wine included!

Where to stay

St. Augustine offers a wide range of accommodations, from historic hotels to charming bed and breakfasts. It is highly recommended to book accommodations in or near the historic downtown, especially if you don’t have a vehicle.

How to get around

Most activities and attractions are located in the historic downtown and are within walking distance. However, to explore the surrounding areas, it might be useful to rent a car.

Where to eat

St. Augustine is full of great places to eat, catering to all budgets. With such diverse gastronomy, we even wrote an article to explore the culinary specialties and restaurants of the city .
