Safari Tab Groups Are Finally Here | How to Create, Manage, and Delete Safari Tab Groups on iPhone or Mac

One of the coolest, most recent Safari features is Tab Groups – Apple redesigned the way we can organize and personalize our Safari browsers. Sure, Tab Groups aren’t precisely a never-seen-before feature, but it’s great news that we can finally use it in Safari instead of relying on other browsers.

What’s great about this feature is that you can use it on Mac, iPad, and even your iPhone! And thanks to iCloud, anything you do on one device will automatically appear on all your other devices as well.

Before you jump into Tab Groups, here are a few things you should know first.

What Are Tab Groups?

The name is pretty self-explanatory, but it’s a new Safari feature that lets you create and group many different tabs into one batch.

They’re basically folders where you can store tabs and access them later.

That way, you can load up your shopping websites whenever you want or create a tab group for your work setup, so you don’t have to bother reopening the same tabs every time.

This feature is exclusive to Safari on iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey. As soon as you update your device, you’ll be able to access tab groups in Safari,  amongst other cool features .

Where Can You Find Your Tab Groups

On Mac, your Tab Groups will be automatically saved on the sidebar menu. All you need to do is tap on the sidebar button on the top left corner of your Safari Browser. You’ll see a list of your Tab Groups, your Bookmarks, and your Reading list too.

If you’re on iPhone, you can see your Tab Groups after you press the Tab bar at the bottom of your screen. You might need to tap the  Tabs button  on the bottom right corner of your screen if you’re on a website.

How to Create a New Tab Group

There are many ways for you to create a new Tab Group, and it doesn’t matter if you’re on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can create brand new tab groups or create a tab group with tabs you already have.

How to Create New Tab Groups on Mac

Create a new Group Tab Safari on Mac

  • Open  Safari .
  • Click the down arrow on the top left corner, next to the sidebar button.
  • Click  New Empty Tab Group  or  New Tab Group with x tabs .
  • This will automatically open the sidebar menu. If you want,  add a name  to your Tab Group, but it’s not necessary.

How to Create New Tab Groups on iPhone or iPad

Create a new Tab Group Safari iPhone

  • Open the  Safari  app.
  • Tap on  the Tab bar  at the bottom of your screen.
  • Tap  New Empty Tab Group  or  New Tab Group from Tabs .
  • On mobile, you will be required to add a new name to your tab group.
  • After you enter a name, tap  Save .

And that’s it. You just created your first Tab Group. Remember that if you choose New Tab Group with x tabs, all the tabs that you have open on Safari will become part of the same Tab Group.

How to Move a Tab to a Different Tab Group

Adding tabs to your Tab Group is simple: All you need to do is open a new tab when you’re in the Tab Group you want. But what if you made a mistake and you want to move it to a different Tab Group? Well, it’s just as easy. Here’s what you need to do:

How to Move a Tab to a Different Tab Group on Mac

  • Right-click  or  Control-click  on the tab you want to move.

If you want your tab out of any group, select  Start Page  after selecting  Move to Tab Group .

How to Delete a Tab Groups

What’s great about Tab Groups is that you can use them for unique occasions and then get rid of them. You can sneakily plan an anniversary date with your partner and then get rid of the Tab Group after you’re done.

Be careful when you delete a Tab Group. You’ll notice that there’s no confirmation option; as soon as you click delete, your Tab Group is gone, and all the tabs in that tab group will be closed automatically.

As of right now, there is no way to undo it, so you’ll need to make sure you’re not deleting a tab that has something important.

Safari now features tab groups that organize your browser tabs in groups you can label and move around. It helps you reduce tab clutter, similar to how tab groups work on Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome . Here's how to use them.

To use tab groups in Safari, you need to be running Safari 15 or later. You can update Safari using System Preferences.

When you're ready, launch Safari on your Mac and open your favorite websites in different tabs. Next, click the "Show Sidebar" icon in the top-left corner of Safari to reveal the Sidebar.

In the Sidebar, you'll see the number of Tabs open at the top. Right-click the button showing the number of tabs open at the top of the sidebar and select "New Tab Group with [#] Tabs" to add all the open tabs into a single new tab group.

All the tabs will appear in a new "Untitled" tab group on the Sidebar. Right-click "Untitled" and select "Rename." Give a new name to the tab group and hit Return to save it.

Next, click the "Hide Sidebar" button in the top-left corner of Safari to close the Sidebar.

Safari will show you the tab group label at the top, next to the "Show Sidebar" button.

To move a tab into a new or existing tab group, right-click on the particular tab, select "Move to Tab Group," and choose an existing tab group name or a new tab group.

You can switch between the tab groups by clicking on the tab label in the top-left corner of Safari.

To add a new tab in any group, you can press Command+T to open a new tab or click the "+" (plus) button in the top-right corner of Safari. You can re-arrange the order of the tab groups by dragging them above or below the existing groups on the Sidebar.

To delete a tab from a tab group, hit the Tabs Overview button in the top-right corner (four squares) to see the snapshot of tabs in a group. Then, click the "X" in the top-left of the tab preview thumbnail to remove it from the group.

Tab Groups are a helpful feature for organizing and managing tabs instead of leaving several of them open. You can also  copy the links of the open tabs in a tab group to save them for later before you close all the tabs at once . Happy Browsing!

Tab Groups are a big change introduced in iOS 15 Safari

iOS 15 Safari sees some big changes, though the biggest change of all — the tab bar has moved to the bottom of the browser — can be reset if you prefer. (We can show you how to move the tab back to the top of Safari .) But another change in Safari is here to stay — Tab Groups.

Tab Groups allow you to collect several tabs into a set. For example, if you're researching buying a new TV, you might create a set called "TV research" that contains reviews, product pages, online retail listings, and so on.

When you're browsing the web on your current iPhone, do you end up with hundreds of tabs open? I mean, did you even know that the limit of tabs you can open is actually capped at 500? I've come about halfway to that, but I know others have reached that outrageous limit thanks to social media. But an iOS 15 feature can help you organize that chaos into something a little more manageable, at least, if you're disciplined enough to keep up with it.

Apple added Safari tab groups in iOS 15 , iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey . With tab groups, you can sort and group together your open tabs, such as websites for work, shopping, entertainment, and more.

Here's how to use tab groups in Safari on the best iPhone and iPad, like the iPhone 13 Pro . And if you're wondering about it for your Mac, here's how to use tab groups in Safari in macOS Monterey .

The moment you launch Safari on iPhone and iPad, you've already created a new tab group by default. Any tabs that you open will go into this default tab group. However, you can create a new group at any time if you so choose.

  • Launch Safari on your iPhone or iPad.
  • Tap the tab button on the bottom toolbar . It looks like two cascading squares.
  • Tap where it says X Tabs ("X" being the number of tabs open in this group), with an arrow pointing down . This will bring up the Tab Groups menu .

Now, any new tab that you open will be in this new tab group until you switch groups. And tab groups are synced across all of your devices via iCloud, so you can pick up easily where you left off across your iPhone, iPad , and Mac.

If you have multiple tab groups, you'll want to make sure that they are named so you can easily recognize what they are for at a glance. Thankfully, you can rename a tab group at any time.

  • Make sure you are in the Tab Groups menu by following steps 1-3 above .

  • Long press on a tab group that you have already given a name .

Tab groups are useful, but for the disciplined

As you can see, tab groups can definitely be helpful if you tend to end up with hundreds of open tabs in Safari over time, thought the feature can be a little hidden for most people. But as useful as the feature is, it's definitely for those who are disicplined enough to keep up with it. As you can tell from the screenshots, I'm a little lazy to maintain the upkeep. iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 brought many changes to Safari, and despite some early controversies, it seems to have quieted down a bit.

Updated May 2022: Added screenshots. These are still the current steps for tab groups in Safari in the latest version of iOS.

By opening Safari, you gain access to a versatile and user-friendly browsing environment that serves as the foundation for managing your tab groups. Whether you're a casual user or a power browser, launching Safari is the gateway to a world of possibilities, including the ability to organize and optimize your browsing experience through the management of tab groups.

Now that Safari is up and running, let's move on to the next step and explore how to access your tab groups within the browser's interface.

Step 2: Access Tab Groups

Accessing tab groups in Safari is a straightforward process that allows users to view and manage their grouped tabs seamlessly. Whether you've organized your tabs into specific categories or utilized tab groups for different projects or interests, accessing these groups is essential for effective tab management.

Viewing Tab Groups: Upon opening Safari, look for the tab group icon located in the upper-left corner of the browser window. This icon resembles a square comprised of smaller squares, representing the grouped tabs. Clicking on this icon reveals a dropdown menu displaying all your existing tab groups.

Selecting a Tab Group: Once the tab group menu is visible, you can select a specific tab group by clicking on its name. This action instantly switches the browser window to display the tabs within the chosen group, allowing you to focus on the content related to that particular category or project.

Managing Tab Groups: In addition to accessing tab groups, Safari provides options to manage them effectively. By right-clicking on the tab group icon or a specific tab within a group, you can access a contextual menu offering various actions, including renaming, moving, or deleting the tab group.

Keyboard Shortcuts: For users who prefer keyboard shortcuts, Safari offers a quick way to access tab groups. Pressing Command + Shift + \ allows you to toggle between tab groups, providing a convenient method for navigating through your grouped tabs without using the mouse.

Customizing Tab Group Display: Safari also allows users to customize the display of tab groups. By right-clicking on the tab group icon and selecting "Show Tab Bar," you can choose to display the tab groups as a separate bar below the address bar, providing a visual representation of your grouped tabs for easy access.

Accessing tab groups in Safari empowers users to efficiently manage their browsing experience, enabling seamless navigation between different sets of tabs based on specific categories, projects, or interests. By understanding how to access and utilize tab groups effectively, users can optimize their browsing environment and enhance their productivity while using Safari.

Step 3: Delete Tab Groups

Deleting tab groups in Safari is a simple yet essential task for maintaining an organized and clutter-free browsing environment. Whether you've completed a project, concluded a research endeavor, or simply no longer need a specific set of grouped tabs, removing tab groups can help streamline your browsing experience and ensure that your browser window remains tailored to your current needs and interests.

To delete a tab group in Safari, follow these straightforward steps:

Accessing the Tab Group Menu: Begin by opening Safari and locating the tab group icon in the upper-left corner of the browser window. This icon, resembling a square comprised of smaller squares, represents the grouped tabs. Click on this icon to reveal a dropdown menu displaying all your existing tab groups.

Selecting the Tab Group to Delete: Once the tab group menu is visible, review the list of tab groups and select the one you wish to delete by clicking on its name. This action instantly switches the browser window to display the tabs within the chosen group, confirming your selection.

Deleting the Tab Group: With the tab group displayed in the browser window, right-click on the tab group icon or a specific tab within the group. A contextual menu will appear, providing various options for managing the tab group. Select the "Delete Tab Group" option from the menu to initiate the deletion process.

Confirmation Prompt: Safari will typically display a confirmation prompt to ensure that you intend to delete the selected tab group. Confirm the deletion by clicking "Delete" or a similar affirmative option in the prompt.

Verification of Deletion: Once the tab group is deleted, the browser window will no longer display the tabs associated with that group. The tabs will either be closed or returned to the general browsing view, depending on the browser's default behavior for deleted tab groups.

By following these steps, you can effectively delete tab groups in Safari, decluttering your browsing environment and ensuring that your tab organization remains aligned with your current browsing needs. Whether you're tidying up after completing a project or reorganizing your tabs for a fresh start, mastering the process of deleting tab groups empowers you to maintain a clean and efficient browsing experience.

How to use Safari Tab Groups

If you’re a safari user, tab groups can help you keep your life organized and your desktop clean..

If you’re using Safari but you’re not using Tab Groups, well, it’s time to change that.

Tab Groups, as the name implies, allows you to group a selection of tabs together and essentially set them aside for future use. For example, if you have a bunch of tabs you use for work and a bunch of tabs you use after work, you can cordon these tabs off into batches so that they don’t get in each other’s way. You can use your work tabs at work and, when you’re finished, swap them for your “after work” tabs with just one click.

You might also have different Tab Groups for different assignments at work or different school projects. Folks who share a computer might have different Tab Groups for each user. The possibilities are endless.

Here’s how to create a tab group in Safari.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on macOS

There are a couple of ways to do this. The easiest method is to make a group out of whatever tabs you currently have open. If you’re about to close Safari but think you might need to pick up where you left off when you open it later, throwing your tabs into a group can give you some peace of mind.

You can also create a tab group from scratch if there is a batch of tabs you think you might want to use later. This is a bit more time-consuming but will allow you to be more selective about which tabs to include.

To create a tab group from existing tabs

  • In Safari, click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s on the left side, next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Pick New Tab Group With [X] Tabs .
  • In the left column, look for the Tab Group subhead. Name your tab group, then press Enter.

To create a tab group from scratch

  • Click the down arrow in the toolbar. (It’s next to the button that opens the sidebar.)
  • Pick New Empty Tab Group .
  • Name your tab group, then press enter.
  • Right-click a tab you want to add to the group, click Move to Tab Group , and select the tab group you want. Alternatively, you can click and drag the tab to your group on the left side.

To open your new tab group

  • Click on that down arrow again.
  • Click on the tab group you want.

Once you’ve got a group up and running, it’s not set in stone. You can adjust the makeup of a given tab group by clicking the arrow to its right in the sidebar’s tab group list. Right-click any tab that comes up, and you’ll have the option to remove it from the group, remove all tabs that aren’t it from the group, or move it to a different group,

You can also click the three dots just next to the arrow if you want to rename, delete, or share the group, along with other options.

How to create Safari Tab Groups on iOS

Tab Groups can sync between iOS and macOS devices, so if you create one on your Mac computer, you can still access it on your iPhone. Nevertheless, if it’s more convenient for you to create these from the Safari app on iOS, you can certainly do so.

  • In the Safari app, click the tabs button on the bottom right. (It’s the one with two squares.)
  • Press and hold a tab you want to add, then pick Move to Tab Group .
  • Select New Tab Group .
  • Name your new group.

How to manage your tabs in macOS Monterey Safari

No more tab hunting in Safari

With Safari 15 on macOS Monterey , you can now organize your tabs with Tab Groups. For those of us who regularly open up one too many tabs, it can be a bit of a chore finding the one you need. Tab Groups can make your life easier by allowing you to organize specific tabs into neat groups.

Incorporating Tab Groups into your browsing flow helps you find information faster. When you open a Tab Group, you open all the tabs within it - and hide everything else. You can then switch between Tab Groups, if need be. Here’s what you need to know about how to manage Tab Groups in Safari.

Creating a New Tab Group

Safari Tab Groups screenshot

There are a few different ways you can create a Tab Group on Safari. Let’s start with the sidebar options:

  • Click the down arrow next to the sidebar icon (marked Tab group picker). Then click on ‘New tab group’ with x tabs. You can then enter a name for this Tab Group, and press Return.
  • If the sidebar is already open, then you can complete the same process outlined above by clicking on the icon at the top marked ‘New tab group’.

You can also create a new tab group by clicking on File > New Tab Group with x tabs . This will automatically add all your open tabs into that Tab Group.

Finally, you can also create an empty Tab Group. To do this:

  • Follow the steps we outlined above, but instead of selecting ‘New Tab Group’, choose ‘New Empty Tab Group’.
  • Give your Tab Group a name, then press Return.
  • You can then drag the tabs you want from the tab bar into your Tab Group. Alternatively, control-click a tab, select Move to Tab Group, then choose the Tab Group you want to move it to.

Open an Existing Tab Group

Safari Tab Groups screenshot

Once you’ve created a Tab Group, it’s really simple to open it when you need it. There are two ways to do this:

  • In Safari, you can click the down arrow that’s next to the Sidebar button on your toolbar. You can then choose the relevant Tab Group from the dropdown menu.
  • Alternatively, if the sidebar is already open, you can choose a Tab Group from there.

It’s worth noting that if you are unsure which Tab Group you need, you can preview thumbnails of what’s in the group. To do this, click the Tab Group in the sidebar, then click the Tab Overview button. This will then present your tabs in an easy-to-view tile format, so you can quickly find what you are looking for.

Switch Between Tab Groups

Safari Tab Groups screenshot

If the sidebar menu is closed, then click on the name of your current Tab Group, which you’ll see in the top left corner of the Safari window. If you click on it, you can then select a different Tab Group. There will also be a small down arrow next to your Tab Group name, which serves the same function.

If you need to switch between Tab Groups, this is also very straightforward. If you are using the sidebar, you’ll see all your Tab Groups listed under the Tab Groups header. Simply choose whichever one you wish to switch to by clicking on it. It will open the new Tab Group, and the previously open tabs will be hidden.

Editing Tab Groups

Safari Tab Groups screenshot

Tab Groups give you plenty of scope to edit, so you don’t need to worry that once you’ve created a group, it can’t be changed. Let’s run through the key things you need to know:

  • Rename a Tab Group from the sidebar. Control-click the Tab Group you wish to change, choose Rename, type in a new name, and press Return.
  • To rearrange the order in which your Tab Groups appear, again use your sidebar. Simply drag a Tab Group to the position you want it to be.
  • If you want to rearrange the order of the tabs within a Tab Group, start by opening the tab group. Then in the tab bar, drag a tab before or after another tab, to put it in the desired spot.
  • To delete a tab from a Tab Group, open the Tab Group. Find the tab you wish to delete in the tab bar, and click the Close button on the left side of that tab.
  • And finally, if you want to delete a Tab Group altogether, go to your sidebar. Control-click the Tab Group you no longer want, and choose Delete. This will delete all the tabs that were included in that group. So if you want to retain any of them, make sure you move them to another Tab Group first.

Sync to Other Devices

Safari Tab Groups screenshot

If you are signed in with the same Apple ID to any other device - be it an iPad, iPhone, or Mac - then Tab Groups from your Mac will be shared with your other devices automatically. The same principle applies in reverse, so any Tab Groups you create on your iPhone for example, will be shared with your Mac.

You can also send the links in a Tab Group to others, simply by dragging the Tab Group from the sidebar of Safari and dropping it into a mail message. If you control-click the Tab Group, you can copy the links from your Tab Group, and then paste them into another app, such as a Notes or Pages document. It will automatically include the name of the Tab Group, followed by the list of links.

That’s everything you need to know about how to manage Tab Groups in Safari in macOS Monterey. It’s a great tool for keeping your tabs under control, instead of endlessly searching for what you need.

How to bookmark Safari Tab groups (and other bookmark tips)

Safari tabs are moderately useful for research, though apple made some some inconsistent ui decisions..

Safari Tab Group

And a big welcome back to AppleHolic readers. Today, I wanted to explain how to make better use of Safari Tabs in iOS 15, iPad OS 15, and macOS Monterey — particularly for researchers.

Slowly getting used to Safari Tabs

There are things I like about Apple’s new tab support in Safari. Where it shines is in the provision of contextualized collections of web pages across all my devices, though I do feel some friction when trying to use the new browser.

Why can’t I place specific tabs into specific Tab Groups using the Share menu? Why isn’t it clear how to add a page to a Tab Group? Why isn’t it immediately obvious how to save these pages, which otherwise disappear once closed on any device?

I feel like the usability still isn’t quite right, which is why on some devices I’ve tried to roll back as many of those changes as I can .

But time moves on, and most people will be using the default system  now that it is universally available. And while it took me some time to get used to it, I’m finding some features more useful than expected.

How to use Safari Tabs for research

Safari Tabs are moderately useful for research. Imagine you are working on a project about dogs (and everyone should love these animals). The first thing you’ll need to do is create a Safari Tab Group called ‘dogs,’ because that’s the place you’ll pop all your dog-related pages in, until you save them as bookmarks (more later).

Creating a new group is slightly different on each device. Here is how to create a new Safari Tab group:

  • On iPhone, you’ll tap and hold the dual squares icon at the bottom right of the browser page, tap Move to Tab Group,  and then tap New Tab Group .
  • On iPad, you’ll open the sidebar and then tap and hold the new dual rectangle with plus character icon at the top right of the bar and choose New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group, which will contain your currently open tabs.
  • On Mac, you’ll open the sidebar and then tap and hold the new dual rectangle with plus character icon at the top right of the bar and choose New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group .

OK, so now you’ve created a group.

[Also read: 12+ tips to make remote meetings more effective ]

What this means is that as you work on your project you will be able to add individual pages to the appropriate Tab Group by tapping and holding the website address bar (iPad, iPhone) and choosing Move to Tab Group ; or control click the website tab (rather than address) on Mac and choosing Move to Tab Group in the contextual menu that will appear.

I’m a long way from feeling natural about this. But I do like that whatever page I have open on any of my devices in any of my Tab Groups is made immediately available across all my other devices.

What I don’t like is that they aren’t saved. So, if you accidentally close a page (such as when fumbling to export it into a different group), it’s gone. That’s why you need this tip:

How to bookmark your open Safari Tabs

The best way to save a web page from within Safari is to bookmark the page. When working with Apple’s new Tab Groups, you’ll need to become accustomed to different ways of achieving this need on each Apple platform.

On iPad, do it like this:

To bookmark all the tabs you have open in your current Safari Tabs space on your iPad, you’ll need to do this:

  • Tap and hold the address bar (not a page tab bar) until you see a contextual menu appear that offers to Copy, Add to Reading List, Add Bookmark and Add Bookmarks for XX tabs.
  • To bookmark your open Safari Tabs, choose Add Bookmarks for XX Tabs.
  • You’ll be able to choose a location and name for the collection on the next page, after which you press save.

If you are using an iPhone, do it this way:

To bookmark all the Safari Tabs you have open in your current Safari Tabs space on your iPhone, you’ll need a completely different approach:

  • Tap and hold the bookmarks icon at the bottom of the browser.
  • Choose Add Bookmarks for XX Tabs.
  • Choose a location and name and press save.

And if you’re on a Mac…

How do you bookmark all your open Safari tabs on a Mac? While in the relevant Tag Group, you’ll need to shimmy your mouse up to the Menu bar, select Bookmarks, and then choose Add Bookmarks for these XX Tabs.

Summing up Tabs

While I find Safari Tabs more useful than anticipated, I think both the Tab and bookmark management functions should be made clearly and consistently available via the Share pane across all devices. This would reduce user friction and make for a smoother and more discoverable user experience.

In its present form, I can imagine people thinking they had saved a page by placing it in a Tab Group, only to find they hadn’t once they closed that page.

  • Next, tap the plus ( + ) icon in the bottom-left corner to open a new tab showing a Start Page.

safari

  • Toggle on the switch next to Tab Group Favorites , then tap the X in the top-right corner to close the Customize Start Page menu.

Additional Features

  • In Apple Maps , users can browse thousands of hikes across U.S. national parks and easily create their own custom walking routes, which they can access offline. Users can also save their favorite national park hikes, custom walking routes, and locations to an all-new Places Library, and add personal notes about each spot.
  • Game Mode enhances the gaming experience with more consistent frame rates, especially during long play sessions, and makes AirPods, game controllers, and other wireless accessories even more responsive.
  • Users get new ways to pay with Apple Pay online and in apps on iPhone and iPad. Starting today, eligible U.S. users will be able to redeem rewards with Discover credit cards, 5 as well as apply for loans directly through Affirm, and eligible U.K. users will be able to access installments with Monzo Flex right at checkout when they use Apple Pay. 6 With Tap to Cash, users can send and receive Apple Cash by simply holding their iPhone near another iPhone or Apple Watch. 7 And with the new ticket experience in Apple Wallet , fans can access even more information about their events, such as venue maps, local weather forecasts, recommended Apple Music playlists, and much more. 8
  • In the  Notes app , math formulas and equations entered while typing are solved instantly. New collapsible sections and highlighting make it easier to emphasize what’s important.
  • Calendar becomes even more helpful by showing both events and tasks from Reminders . Users can create, edit, and complete reminders right from Calendar, and the updated month view provides an overview of events and tasks at a glance.
  • In Journal , an all-new insights view helps users keep track of their journaling goals, the ability to search and sort entries makes it easy to enjoy past memories, and a Journal widget lets users quickly start an entry from the Home Screen or Lock Screen. Time spent journaling can be saved as mindful minutes in the Health app, and users can log their state of mind right in Journal.
  • The Home app introduces guest access, providing users with easy ways to grant guests control of locks, garage doors, and security systems; set schedules for when guests can access the home; and more. With convenient updates to the Energy category, the Home app also makes it easier for eligible users to access, understand, and make more informed decisions about their home electricity use.
  • Emergency SOS Live Video allows users to share context through streaming video and recorded media. In the middle of an emergency call, participating emergency dispatchers can send a request for a user to share live video or media from the user’s camera roll over a secure connection, making it easier and faster to get help.
  • Updates coming to AirPods will transform the way users take calls, respond to Siri, and immerse themselves in their favorite games with AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, and AirPods Pro 2. Voice Isolation helps the caller’s voice be heard in loud or windy environments, while Siri Interactions allow users to nod or shake their head to respond to Siri announcements. AirPods updates also provide the best wireless audio latency Apple has ever delivered for mobile gaming, and add Personalized Spatial Audio for all AirPods models for even more immersive gameplay.
  • Later this fall, AirPods Pro 2 add a clinical-grade, over-the-counter Hearing Aid capability for users with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Based on results from an intuitive, clinically validated Hearing Test users can take from the comfort of their own home using AirPods Pro 2 and a compatible iPhone or iPad, this new feature seamlessly transforms AirPods Pro into a personalized hearing aid set to meet the specific needs of the user, making access to hearing assistance easier than ever at an approachable price point. 9
  • In the Health app , Medical ID has been redesigned to make it even easier for first responders to find the most important information in an emergency. The Health app helps users better understand their data during pregnancy by making adjustments and recommendations to reflect changes in their physical and mental health.
  • The Fitness app on iPhone now offers users the ability to customize the Summary tab, and Apple Fitness+ has been redesigned with personalized workout and meditation recommendations in For You, more powerful search, and enhanced awards for extra motivation.
  • New accessibility features include Eye Tracking, a built-in option for navigating iPhone with just eyes; Music Haptics, a new way for users who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music using the Taptic Engine in iPhone; Vocal Shortcuts that enable users to perform tasks by making a custom sound; and Vehicle Motion Cues, which helps reduce motion sickness for passengers using iPhone in a moving vehicle. Accessibility features are now available for CarPlay, including Voice Control, Sound Recognition, Color Filters, and Bold Text.

iOS 18 is now available, bringing iPhone users around the world new ways to personalize their iPhone with deeper customization to the Home Screen and Control Center; the biggest-ever redesign to Photos, making it even easier to find and relive special moments; and major enhancements to Messages and Mail. Starting next month, iOS 18 will introduce Apple Intelligence, the personal intelligence system that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that is incredibly useful and relevant while protecting users’ privacy and security. 1

In iOS 18, users can customize their Home Screen in exciting new ways by placing app icons and widgets to frame the wallpaper or create the ideal layout on each page. Users can also choose how the app icons and widgets are presented — light, dark, or with a colored tint — or make app icons appear larger for a new streamlined look. Control Center is redesigned to be even more flexible. Powerful groups of controls — including favorites, media playback, Home controls and connectivity, and the new controls gallery featuring options from third-party apps — can be organized so that they’re always just a swipe away. Users can also access their favorite controls from the Action button, and for the first time, users can change the controls on the Lock Screen or remove them entirely.

The biggest-ever update to Photos makes it easier to find and relive special moments. The beautiful, simplified layout puts the library into a unified yet familiar view. New collections like Recent Days, People & Pets, and Trips automatically keep the library organized with on-device intelligence, so users can spend less time searching and more time enjoying their memories. Users can personalize their experience with a customizable layout that reflects what is most important to them and pin favorite collections to keep them easily accessible.

Messages offers major updates to the ways users express themselves and stay connected. Formatting options like bold, italic, underline, and strikethrough let users better convey tone; all-new text effects bring words, phrases, and sentences to life; emoji and sticker Tapbacks give users endless ways to react in a conversation; and users can compose an iMessage to send later. For times when cellular and Wi-Fi connections aren’t available, Messages via satellite connects users to a satellite in space right from the Messages app to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS. 2 When messaging contacts who do not have an Apple device, the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging compared to SMS and MMS.

The Phone app helps users stay organized with the ability to record and transcribe live calls, making it easier to recall important details later. 3 Call participants are notified before a recording begins, and transcripts are conveniently saved to the Notes app, allowing users to quickly search and review what was discussed.

Available later this year, categorization in Mail organizes messages to help users stay on top of their inbox. The Primary category lets users focus on the messages that matter most or contain time-sensitive information. Transactions, Updates, and Promotions are grouped by sender in a new digest view that pulls together all relevant emails from a business, allowing users to quickly scan for what’s important in the moment.

Safari is the world’s fastest browser, and with iOS 18, it offers even more capabilities for browsing the web. 4 Highlights intelligently surface key information — like a location’s address, a summary, or more information about a movie, TV show, or song — after a webpage is loaded. The redesigned Reader brings more ways to enjoy articles with a streamlined view, a summary, and a table of contents for longer articles. With Distraction Control, users can hide items on a webpage that they may find disruptive to their browsing, such as sign-in banners or content overlays within a website.

Passwords is a new app built on the foundation of Keychain that makes it even easier for users to access their passwords and see all their credentials — like passwords, passcodes, and verification codes — all in one place. Passwords is backed by incredibly secure end-to-end encryption; seamlessly syncs across devices; and alerts users when a password could be easily guessed, has been used multiple times, or has appeared in a known data leak.

iOS 18 gives users tools to manage who can see their apps, how their contacts are shared, and how their iPhone connects to accessories. Locked and hidden apps offer users peace of mind that information they want to keep private, such as app notifications and content, will not inadvertently be seen by others. Users can now lock an app, and for additional privacy, they can also hide an app, moving it to a locked, hidden apps folder. When an app is locked or hidden, content like messages or emails inside the app are hidden from search, notifications, and other places across the system. In addition, iOS 18 lets users share only specific contacts with an app, and developers can offer users a more seamless and private experience when connecting third-party accessories with iPhone.

Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, harnessing the power of Apple silicon to understand and create language and images, take action across apps, and draw from personal context to simplify and accelerate everyday tasks — all while protecting users’ privacy and security. The first set of Apple Intelligence features will be available next month, delivering experiences that are delightful, intuitive, easy to use, and specially designed to help users do the things that matter most to them.

With Writing Tools, users can refine their words by rewriting, proofreading, and summarizing text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps. In Photos, the Memories feature now enables users to create the movies they want to see by simply typing a description. In addition, natural language can be used to search for specific photos, and search in videos gets more powerful with the ability to find specific moments in clips. The new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo — without accidentally altering the subject. And in the Notes and Phone apps, users can record, transcribe, and summarize audio. When a recording is initiated while on a call in the Phone app, participants are automatically notified, and once the call ends, Apple Intelligence generates a summary to help recall key points.

Siri becomes more natural, flexible, and deeply integrated into the system experience. It has a brand-new design with an elegant glowing light that wraps around the edge of the screen when active on iPhone. Users can type to Siri at any time on iPhone, and can switch fluidly between text and voice as they use Siri to accelerate everyday tasks. With richer language-understanding capabilities, Siri can follow along when users stumble over their words and can maintain context from one request to the next. In addition, with Siri’s extensive product knowledge, it can now answer thousands of questions about the features and settings of Apple devices.

With many Apple Intelligence models running entirely on device, as well as the introduction of Private Cloud Compute — which extends the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud to unlock even more intelligence — Apple Intelligence represents an extraordinary step forward for privacy in artificial intelligence.
