Safari on your iPhone tends to be a bit overzealous at opening new tabs, resulting in a web browser that's more crowded than a Taylor Swift concert. Thankfully, iOS and iPadOS make it possible to close all but one tab at once -- it's one of our favorite tricks for iPhone .
If robot vacuums can automatically clean your house, why shouldn't your phone automatically clean up tabs for you? The iPhone can automatically close tabs that are older than a week or a month, keeping your Safari tab count from creeping to embarrassing numbers. You only have to arrange your settings once, then Safari will do the cleanup for you, set it and forget it.

We break down Apple's current iPhone lineup, detailing the the best phone at every price for photography, demanding apps, and other tasks.
Safari has a few other hidden organization features, like tab groups and even the ability to close your MacBook's open tabs from your iPhone. We're sharing our favorite tricks for keeping your Safari tabs under control, starting with how to close all tabs on your iPhone or iPad.
How to close all tabs on iPhone or iPad Safari
If you're like us, and you end up with multiple Safari tabs open, closing them all down individually can take a very long time. We had 246 open at one point.
If you have tabs you want to keep open, you'll still need to close all of your tabs individually, pin them, or you can save a bookmark and reopen them afterward. Another option is to move those favorite tabs to a new Tab Group, as this process only deletes the tabs in the group. If you want to clear out the Safari clutter, you can close all but one tab with just a few taps. Here's how:
- Open the Safari app on your iPhone.
- Tap the icon with two squares in the lower right corner to view all your open tabs.
- Optional: If you have any tabs that you want to keep open, press and hold on that tab and select Move to Tab Group , as this process only does one tab group at a time.
- Long press on the thumbnail for an open tab . Pro tip: Use a tab you would like to keep open, as this will be the only tab remaining at the end of the process.
- Tap on Close Other Tabs.
Alternatively, you can long-press the tab button in the bottom-right corner of Safari and then select Close All Tabs to quickly close everything that's open, including the tab you're currently viewing.
How to automatically close old Safari tabs on your iPhone
Whenever you open a link from another app, odds are it opens in Safari and creates yet another new tab, making it fairly easy for your tab count to grow without you even realizing it. But you don't have to go through and close all your tabs on a regular basis. Instead, you can have your iPhone automatically close old tabs after one day, one week, or one month.
This is a great option if you have a tendency to rack up open tabs quickly. If you turn on this feature, remember to use the bookmark tool or reading list to easily recall any important websites to revisit later, which tends to be easier than searching through your Safari history.
- Open the Settings app.
- Scroll down and select Safari.
- Under Tabs, find the Close Tabs option and tap on it -- it should be set to 'manually' by default.
- On the next screen, tap the time frame that you would like Safari to close old tabs after -- either one day, one week, or one month.
How to organize Safari tabs on iPhone with Tab Groups
Maybe you like having 217 tabs open at once (I won't judge, I've been there) but you want to be able to find what you need a bit more easily. Safari allows you to use tab groups to organize your open web pages. For example, you could have a tab group for online shopping and another for housing your favorite news websites that you want to leave open to easily read every morning. Tab Groups allow you to organize your web browsing and are especially helpful if you have lots of tabs open at once.
- Open the Safari app on iPhone.
- Tap on the tab icon in the lower right corner -- it's the one with the two squares.
- Tap the menu icon at the bottom center.
- Select New Empty Tab Group or use the New Tab Group with # Tabs to create a group with the tabs already opened.
- Name the new tab group and tap Save.

How to close open Safari tabs on your Mac from your iPhone
If you have a MacBook or iPad signed onto the same Apple ID as your iPhone , when you open the Safari app, and you tap on the two squares in the bottom right corner, you will see a list of the pages open on your MacBook below those open on your iPhone. It isn't possible to close them all down at once from your iPhone, but you can close them out one by one from your iPhone, so they are no longer open on your Mac.
- Make sure that you have Safari enabled under the iCloud settings first . Head to the Settings App.
- Tap your name , then iCloud .
- In Apps using iCloud , make sure the Safari toggle is green .
- Open Safari on your iPhone.
- Tap the tabs icon.
- Tap the plus to open a new tab.
- Scroll down on the new tab until you see "From [Your MacBook's Name]."
- There are two ways to close out these tabs -- you can tap and hold the entry to close, then select close. Or, you can click "Show All" then swipe left and tap close.

How to open a private browsing tab in Safari on iPhone
Private Browsing Mode on Safari allows you to visit websites without Safari remembering what pages you've visited, your search history or your Autofill information when you close the tab.
To open a Private Browsing Tab in Safari on your iPhone, follow these steps:
- Press and hold the squares in the bottom right corner.
- Select 'New Private Tab.'
You can also tap the squares once, tap 'Private' in the left corner to highlight it, and tap the '+' in the middle to open a new Private Browsing Tab.
More Safari organization tricks
Did you know that you could create different browsing profiles to keep your work and personal browsing separate? It's a new feature on iOS 17, but it's not the only Safari trick that can help keep your browser organized. You can also bookmark multiple tabs at once, or even alphabetize that long list of open Safari tabs. You can even swipe left on the address bar to quickly open a new tab. Find the step-by-step details for these tricks in our guide to Safari tips and tricks .

I Bring My Still Photos to Life Using These 4 Tools
Why is the windows interface so disjointed after these years, manage work or personal workflows with this excellent project organizer app.
Whether you use Safari on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or any combination of these devices, it's very likely you have a lot of tabs open in it right now. This is far from a call-out—I'm guilty of it myself. It feels great to close a bunch of them when you finish a project or finish reading everything, but it's annoying to close them one by one.
Thankfully, there are ways to quickly close all of your Safari tabs at once on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. So, read on to see how you do it on each device!
How to Close All Safari Tabs on an iPhone or iPad
As you can see in our guide for using Safari on iPhone and iPad , Safari runs the same on both devices. So, you can follow the same steps for closing all of your Safari tabs on an iPhone or iPad.
These steps start with opening Safari on your device. Once Safari is open, find the Tabs icon in the bottom menu (it looks like two overlapping squares). If you don't see this bottom menu, scroll up on your screen to make it visible.
Long-press on the Tabs icon. A menu should appear, giving you options to open new tabs and close existing ones. Tap Close All [Number] Tabs to close all tabs you have open in Safari at once. It's that easy.
You can also close or delete all of your Safari tabs on an iPhone or iPad if you only tap the Tabs icon once. This shows all of the tabs you have open on your device, gives you an exact count of them, and lets you close them individually.
To close all of your Safari tabs at once from here, long-press on Done and select Close All [Number] Tabs . All of your Safari tabs will be deleted immediately.
How to Close All Your Safari Tabs on a Mac
There are many great ways to manage your tabs and bookmarks in Safari on a Mac , but sometimes you just need to close them all. Unlike on an iPhone and iPad, you can't close all the open Safari tabs at once on your Mac with a single click. It instead takes a menu selection and an additional click.
To find the appropriate menu, open Safari on your Mac. Then, Control -click (or right-click) on any tab in the Safari window. A menu will appear with options to pin, duplicate, and close tabs. Select the Close Other Tabs option. This will close all the tabs open in Safari, leaving only the one you opened the menu on.
You can now hit the Close (X) button in the window of your one open tab or press Cmd + W to close or delete the last tab. Either way, you'll have closed all open Safari tabs on your Mac pretty much all at once!
Close All Your Safari Tabs for Peace of Mind
It can be deeply satisfying to close all your open tabs in your Safari browser simultaneously. Your Mac, iPhone, and iPad can run a little quicker after, and your mind can feel a little less cluttered too.
Safari makes closing all of your tabs easy, no matter which Apple device you're using. Hopefully, the above steps illustrated that and helped you close all your tabs for a bit of digital decluttering and peace of mind.

If you frequently find yourself with dozens of forgotten open Safari tabs on your iPhone or iPad, then it can be annoying to sort through them or manually close them later . Luckily, Safari can automatically close tabs after a certain period of time. Here's how to set it up.
First, open Settings. Scroll down until you see "Safari" and tap it.
In Safari settings, swipe down until you see the "Tabs" section, then tap "Close Tabs."
One the "Close Tabs" screen, you have the option to set the lifespan of an open Safari browser tab. When set, Safari will close tabs that have not been viewed within the period of time you set, and the options are "Manually," "After One Day," "After One Week," or "After One Month." This setting applies to Private tabs as well.
Pick the option that suits you best and tap on it.
After that, leave Settings. It's handy to know that even after Safari automatically closes your older tabs, you can still find them in the hidden "Open Recently Closed Tabs" menu in Safari for iPhone and iPad. You can access it by holding down the "+" (plus) button on the tab management screen in Safari.
As a potential downside, Safari (as of iOS and iPadOS 13) will also group recently closed Private Browsing tabs in the same "Recently Closed Tabs" area if they are closed automatically. If you want to fully conceal recent browsing activity, it may be best to manually close Private tabs yourself.

How to organize Safari tabs using tab groups in iPadOS 17
![delete safari tabs on ipad Chip Loder's Avatar](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/chip+loder.jpg)
Last updated 2 months ago
Tabs in Safari in iOS and iPadOS allow you to open multiple web pages at once - with each page in a separate tab. This makes reading quicker.
A few years ago, Apple added Tab Groups to Safari in iOS and iPadOS, which allows you to group tabs by category into groups with names you define. Each tab group has a name you give it, and you can add multiple web pages in tabs to each group.
Tab groups in iPadOS provide convenience by keeping multiple open tabs organized and under control.
In iPadOS 17, Apple lets you use tab groups in multiple ways. You can:
- Create new tab groups
- Add new web pages or favorites to existing groups
- Switch between tab groups in the sidebar
- View tab groups in the Start Page pane
- Search tabs
Apple calls groups in the Favorites sidebar "Tab Group Favorites".
Getting started with tabs in Safari on iPadOS
To use tab groups in Safari for iPadOS, you'll first want to open one or more web page tabs in Safari.
You can do this by tapping the + button at the top right corner of Safari, by opening an existing bookmark from the Safari Favorites page, or by opening an existing Start Page or Home Screen shortcut you've saved which points to a web page.
Or you can click the + button and then type or paste in a web URL at the top of the Safari window.
Once you have multiple web page tabs open in Safari, you're ready to create tab groups or add pages to existing tab groups.
Creating tab groups in Safari
To create a new tab group in Safari on iPadOS, first tap the sidebar icon in the upper-left corner, then tap the button to the right with the + in it:
![delete safari tabs on ipad Tap the sidebar icon (left), then tap the](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/57396-117178-new1-xl.jpg)
This presents a menu containing a single item; New Empty Tab Group . After you tap it, note the "Done" button on the right.
![delete safari tabs on ipad Tap](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/57396-117179-new2-xl.jpg)
Next, you'll be prompted to enter a name for the new tab group, so add a name and then tap Save . This adds a new tab group with the new name in the sidebar on the left:
![delete safari tabs on ipad Give the new tab group a name.](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/57396-117180-new3-xl.jpg)
At this point, you now have a new tab group which automatically contains all the tabs you had open when you created the new tab group. You can repeat this process as many times as you like - creating multiple tab groups, each containing a different set of open tabs.
To switch between tab groups, simply tap one of the named tab groups from the list in the sidebar on the left. This switches between sets of open web page tabs all at once.
You can hide and show the sidebar at will by tapping the icon in the upper left corner of Safari repeatedly.
Tab group favorites in the Start Page
After creating tab groups, if you now go to any Start Page in Safari by tapping the + button in Safari's upper right corner, then tap any tab group in the sidebar, you'll now see a tab group favorites section with the same name at the top of the Start Page above all individual favorites.
If you tap other tab groups in the sidebar, the Start Page's tab group favorites section changes to the name of the tab group and displays a large + button in it.
If you tap the large + button, you'll be presented with a Bookmarks menu containing several items, one of which is Tab Group Favorites :
![delete safari tabs on ipad Bookmarks with Tab Group Favorites.](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/57396-117181-new4-xl.jpg)
If you tap this menu item, a submenu will be displayed showing all tab groups by name. This allows you to select any bookmarked tab in a tab group and add it to the tab group you started with.
This can be a bit confusing at first, but once you've done it a few times, you'll get the hang of it.
![delete safari tabs on ipad Select any bookmarked tab from any tab group from the submenu to add it to the current tab group.](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/57396-117182-new5-xl.jpg)
At the end of each of the displayed tab group submenus in the Bookmarks sheet above is a list of all currently bookmarked tabs in each tab group. Selecting any one bookmark from the Bookmarks sheet will add it back to the tab group pane on the Start Page where you began (next to the original large + button you tapped.
One important thing to note here is that merely having tabs open in any tab group is different from bookmarking them in a tab group.
Moving, pinning, closing, and arranging tabs in tab groups
Back in Safari's main window, if you press and hold on any open tab, you'll get a small popover menu that contains several items:
- Move to Tab Group
- Arrange Tabs By
- Close Other Tabs
![delete safari tabs on ipad Press and hold a web page tab to get the popover menu.](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/57396-117183-IMG_1328-xl.jpg)
Selecting Pin Tab moves the tab to the far left of Safari's window, pins it there, and adds a thumbtack icon to the tab. This lets you know that the tab can't be moved until you unpin it.
Selecting Move to Tab Group presents several options:
- New Tab Group
- Names of all existing tab groups
From this submenu you can either create a new tab group like you did above, send the tab to the Start Page, or move it to any existing tab group by name.
Selecting any tab group name from the submenu closes the pressed tab and sends it to that tab group.
![delete safari tabs on ipad Use the submenu to move tabs to other groups, arrange, or close them.](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/57396-117194-IMG_1329-xl.jpg)
If you select Arrange Tabs By it displays a submenu with two options: Arrange Tabs by Title and Arrange Tabs by Website
Arranging tabs by title sorts and repositions the tabs alphabetically, while arranging tabs by website reorders them so all tabs from each site are ordered next to each other.
If you select Close Tab it simply closes the pressed tab taking no further action.
If you select Close Other Tabs it closes all the other open tabs in the current tab group except the one that was pressed.
Adding tabs to tab groups Favorites manually
Once you have all your tabs and tab groups set up the way you like, you can also add any existing tab to any tab group Favorites list.
To do so, single-tap any existing tab, then tap the share sheet icon in the upper right corner of Safari's window.
This presents a popover with several items for adding the tab to Favorites, but now one of them is Add to "Name" Favorites where "Name" is the currently selected tab group in the sidebar.
Selecting this menu item adds the current tab to the currently selected tab group Favorites list. The next time you tap that tab group in the sidebar, the Favorited tab will show up in the tab group's Favorites section on the Start Page.
![delete safari tabs on ipad Tap the Share Sheet icon to add an existing tab into a tab group's Favorites.](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/57396-117196-IMG_1332-xl.jpg)
This can be a little confusing - you're essentially bookmarking the current tab into the Start Page, but only for the tab group indicated in the share sheet's Favorites popover menu.
Searching tabs
You can also search tabs for text you want to find. To do so, tap the small icon with two squares in the upper right corner of Safari's window.
This opens the tabs search pane and shrinks all open tabs into thumbnails. Any pinned tabs appear as page titles only with a thumbtack icon at the top of the pane:
![delete safari tabs on ipad Searching tabs.](https://photos5.appleinsider.com/gallery/57396-117197-IMG_1318-xl.jpg)
Now you can type text into the search box at the top of the pane to search all open tabs.
Tap Cancel , then Done to return to Safari's main window.
Removing tab groups
To remove a tab group from your iPad or iPhone , press and hold a tab group by name in the sidebar, then select Delete from the popover menu.
You can also rename tab groups and show all tabs in a tab group in the sidebar from the popover.
The addition of tab groups in Safari makes opening and managing large sets of web pages easy. By organizing open pages by tab groups, and using tab group favorites, it's easy to switch between different sets of data with a few taps.
For example, you might have one tab group for work, one for personal use, family, entertainment, or research topics. When you want to switch contexts, just select a tab group to return to all the tabs you had open for that topic.
Tab groups make Safari and surfing the web on iOS and iPadOS devices much faster and more enjoyable.

Method 3: Using Private Browsing Mode
In the digital age, privacy and security are paramount concerns for individuals navigating the online landscape. Safari's private browsing mode offers a valuable solution, allowing users to explore the web with enhanced privacy and discretion. By activating private browsing mode, users can safeguard their browsing history, cookies, and other browsing data from being stored on their devices, thereby enhancing their digital privacy and security.
Steps to Activate Private Browsing Mode in Safari:
- Launch Safari on your Mac.
- Navigate to the top menu bar and click on "File."
- From the dropdown menu, select "New Private Window" to initiate private browsing mode.
- Open the Safari browser on your iOS device.

When private browsing mode is activated, Safari ensures that your browsing activity is not recorded in your browsing history, and any information entered in forms or search bars is not saved. This feature is particularly useful when you wish to conduct research, make online purchases, or access sensitive information without leaving a digital trail on your device.
By utilizing private browsing mode, users can also prevent websites from tracking their online behavior and gathering personal data. This added layer of privacy empowers individuals to browse the web with confidence, knowing that their online activities are not being stored or utilized for targeted advertising or data collection purposes.
Furthermore, private browsing mode can be beneficial when sharing a device with others, as it helps maintain the confidentiality of your browsing sessions. Once the private browsing window is closed, all associated browsing data is automatically deleted, ensuring that your online activities remain private and secure.
In addition to enhancing privacy, private browsing mode can also be utilized to access websites without being influenced by previous search history or personalized recommendations. This can be particularly advantageous when conducting unbiased research or exploring content without the influence of personalized algorithms.
By incorporating private browsing mode into your Safari experience, you can navigate the web with heightened privacy and discretion, ensuring that your online activities remain confidential and secure. Whether you're concerned about digital privacy, wish to prevent tracking, or simply desire a clean browsing slate, private browsing mode offers a valuable tool to enhance your browsing experience in Safari.

By decluttering your open tabs, you can improve browser performance, reduce memory usage, and create a tidy and organized workspace for your online activities.
The process of closing individual tabs allows for targeted decluttering, enabling you to remove specific tabs that are no longer relevant to your browsing session. This method provides a tailored approach to tab management, ensuring that your browsing space remains focused and efficient.
Furthermore, the ability to close all tabs at once offers a comprehensive solution for decluttering your browsing space swiftly. Whether you're conducting research, managing multiple projects, or simply clearing the slate for a fresh browsing session, this method allows you to reset your tab environment and optimize your digital workflow.
Additionally, the utilization of private browsing mode in Safari enhances your digital privacy and security, providing a safeguard against the storage of browsing history and cookies. One of the coolest, most recent Safari features is Tab Groups – Apple redesigned the way we can organize and personalize our Safari browsers. Sure, Tab Groups aren’t precisely a never-seen-before feature, but it’s great news that we can finally use it in Safari instead of relying on other browsers.
What’s great about this feature is that you can use it on Mac, iPad, and even your iPhone! And thanks to iCloud, anything you do on one device will automatically appear on all your other devices as well.
Before you jump into Tab Groups, here are a few things you should know first.
What Are Tab Groups?
The name is pretty self-explanatory, but it’s a new Safari feature that lets you create and group many different tabs into one batch.
They’re basically folders where you can store tabs and access them later.
That way, you can load up your shopping websites whenever you want or create a tab group for your work setup, so you don’t have to bother reopening the same tabs every time.
This feature is exclusive to Safari on iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey. As soon as you update your device, you’ll be able to access tab groups in Safari, amongst other cool features .
Where Can You Find Your Tab Groups
On Mac, your Tab Groups will be automatically saved on the sidebar menu. All you need to do is tap on the sidebar button on the top left corner of your Safari Browser. You’ll see a list of your Tab Groups, your Bookmarks, and your Reading list too.
If you’re on iPhone, you can see your Tab Groups after you press the Tab bar at the bottom of your screen. You might need to tap the Tabs button on the bottom right corner of your screen if you’re on a website.
How to Create a New Tab Group
There are many ways for you to create a new Tab Group, and it doesn’t matter if you’re on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can create brand new tab groups or create a tab group with tabs you already have.

- Open Safari .
- Click the down arrow on the top left corner, next to the sidebar button.
- Click New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group with x tabs .
- This will automatically open the sidebar menu. If you want, add a name to your Tab Group, but it’s not necessary.

- Open the Safari app.
- Tap on the Tab bar at the bottom of your screen.
- Tap New Empty Tab Group or New Tab Group from Tabs .
- On mobile, you will be required to add a new name to your tab group.
- After you enter a name, tap Save .
And that’s it. You just created your first Tab Group. Remember that if you choose New Tab Group with x tabs, all the tabs that you have open on Safari will become part of the same Tab Group.
How to Move a Tab to a Different Tab Group
Adding tabs to your Tab Group is simple: All you need to do is open a new tab when you’re in the Tab Group you want. But what if you made a mistake and you want to move it to a different Tab Group? Well, it’s just as easy. Here’s what you need to do:

Browse privately in Safari on Mac
When you browse privately , the details of your browsing aren’t saved, and the websites you visit aren’t shared with your other Apple devices.

Open Safari for me
Browse privately one time
A private browsing window has a dark Smart Search field with white text.
Browse as you normally would.
When you use Private Browsing:
Browsing initiated in one tab is isolated from browsing initiated in another tab, so websites you visit can’t track your browsing across multiple sessions.
Webpages you visit and your AutoFill information aren’t saved.
Your open webpages aren’t stored in iCloud , so they aren’t shown when you view all your open tabs from other Apple devices.
Your recent searches aren’t included in the results list when you use the Smart Search field.
Items you download aren’t included in the downloads list. (The items do remain on your computer.)
If you use Handoff , private browsing windows aren’t handed off to your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or other Mac computers.
Changes to your cookies and website data aren’t saved.
Websites can’t modify information stored on your Mac, so services normally available at such sites may work differently until you use a non-private window.
Note: None of the above applies in non-private Safari windows you may have open.
Always browse privately
Click the “Safari opens with” pop-up menu, then choose “A new private window.”

Delete any items you downloaded while using private windows.

When you use Private Browsing, “Use advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection” is turned on by default. This setting blocks connections to data collection companies that use advanced fingerprinting techniques (a way of identifying your device based on data gathered while you browse), and known tracking parameters are removed from all URLs. You can turn this setting on for all browsing; see Change Advanced settings in Safari . Some website features may be affected when advanced tracking and fingerprinting protection is turned on. If the website you’re viewing is affected, choose View > Reload Reducing Privacy Protections.
Besides using private windows, you can manage cookies and data stored by all websites and prevent cross-site tracking .
If you forget to use a private window, you can clear your browsing history .
