It might come as quite a surprise to learn that Apple's Safari browser is more than 20 years old. It first made an appearance as the default browser on Mac back in January 2003 and it was intended to be a faster browser for the Mac than the other popular browsers at the time, like Internet Explorer and Netscape. In the two decades that followed, Safari has seen some big changes. It was one of the first apps to appear on the original iPhone, and then made its way to the iPad too when the first model appeared in 2010.

Today, Safari is still an excellent browser for Mac, iPhone , and iPad, and there are a lot of features that you may be totally unaware of. Here are some of the best Safari tips and tricks you should take advantage of.

Safari tips and tricks on Mac

Thanks to the power of iCloud , you can sync your browsing across all your Apple devices, from your iPhone to your Mac. If you set up tab groups on your iPhone or iPad, you can see those same groups on your Mac, and vice versa. However, each version of the browser has its own unique tricks, many of which are definitely worth knowing.

Turn any website into an app

A new feature in the latest version of Safari, is that it's now possible to take any website and turn it into an app that will appear in your dock. A Safari web app is a little different from a standard page in Safari, as it doesn't store any history, cookies, or other website data. It's also more streamlined, with just three buttons: back, forward, and share. If there's a streaming site you use that doesn't have its own app, for example, you can make one with just a few clicks.

Open the website that you want turn into a web app.
Click the Share icon in the top-right of the Safari window.
Select Add to Dock .
The web page is now turned into a web app that will appear in the dock of your Mac.

Use profiles to keep your browsing separated

Another new feature in the latest version of Safari is the ability to create different profiles. These profiles allow you to save completely different sets of Safari preferences. Your browsing history, bookmarks, cookies, and website data will only be saved within your profile so sites you visit in your Work profile for example, won't appear in the history for your Personal profile.

Open Safari .

If you don't want to use profiles, you can use tab groups to keep your browsing more organised. Tab groups allow you to group collections of tabs together. When you open the group, you'll just see the tabs saved within that group. You can create as many different tab groups as you wish, and they will sync across your Apple devices.

Open Safari and click the Show Sidebar icon at the top-left of the screen.
Click the New Tab Group icon in the top-right corner of the sidebar.
To create a new empty tab group, select New Empty Tab Group .
To add the currently open tabs to a new group, select New Tab Group with X Tabs .
You can add further tabs to tab groups by dragging them into the appropriate group in the sidebar.

Use picture-in-picture for better multitasking

If you're watching a video on a website, you might want to be able to keep browsing as you do so. Using the picture-in-picture feature in Safari allows you to break out the video from the webpage, so that you can keep watching it and carry on browsing, even in other tabs or apps.

Open a webpage with a video you want to watch and start the video playing.
Right-click the Speaker icon at the right-hand end of the URL bar.
Select Open Picture in Picture .

Quickly get back to search results using SnapBack

Have you ever fallen down a browsing rabbit hole? You do a web search, click one of the results, find an interesting link on that page and click it. Then you find an even more interesting link on that page. Before you know it, you're ten pages from where you first started.

Now you want to get back to your original search results. That's going to involve a lot of clicking the back button, right? Well, not if you use the clever SnapBack feature. It will take you right back to those search results, skipping all the pages in between.

Do a web search in Safari.
Follow some links within the same tab.
Click the History menu.
Select Search Results SnapBack .
You'll be taken back to the original page of search results.

Quickly close multiple tabs

If you find that you've got too many tabs open, you may not like the thought of having to close each one manually. The good news is that you don't have to. You can quickly close multiple tabs in Safari in just a couple of clicks.

Right-click a tab that you want to keep open.
To close every other tab except the current one, select Close Other Tabs .
To close all the tabs to the right of the current one, select Close Tabs to the Right .

Use tabs in Split View

Split View is a useful iPad feature for working with multiple apps at once. It works by splitting the screen into two sections, with a different app running in each. However, it's also possible to use Split View for two different Safari tabs.

Open the first page you want to use in Split View.
Tap the Three Dots at the very top of the screen.
Tap the Split View icon.
Tap the Safari icon to open another Safari window.
You can now navigate to the other web page you want to see in this new window.
You can drag the central divider in either direction if you need one of the windows to be larger than the other.
To return to the standard view, tap the Three Dots icon at the top of one of the windows and select the Full Screen icon.

Merge Safari windows back into tabs

If you've been working with multiple separate windows of Safari, rather than using tabs within the same window, it's possible to quickly merge all of your open Safari windows back into tabs.

Tap and hold the Tab Overview icon in the top-right of one of your Safari windows.
Select Merge All Windows .
All open Safari windows will be collected together as tabs within a single window.

Bookmark multiple tabs at once

If you've got multiple tabs open, and you want to save all of them so that you can access them later, you might go through each one in turn and save it as a bookmark. However, there's a much quicker way which allows you to bookmark all of your currently open tabs.

Open the tabs that you want to bookmark.
Tap and hold the Bookmarks icon.
To add a single bookmark, select Add Bookmark .
To bookmark all of the currently open tabs, select Add Bookmarks for X Tabs .

Sort your tabs by title or website

The extra real estate on the iPad allows you to view a lot of tabs at once. However, finding the right tab can still be tricky if you have a lot of them open. It's possible to sort your tabs by title or by website to make it easier to find the one you want.

Tap and hold the Tab Overview icon in the bottom-right of the screen.
Select Close All X Tabs .
All of your open tabs will close.

Set your tabs to close automatically

If even this seems like too much effort, you can get Safari to automatically close your tabs for you. You can have this happen every day, every week, or every month.

Open the Settings app.
Scroll down and select Safari .

Select After One Day , After One Week , or After One Month to have Safari automatically close your tabs for you.

Open a new tab with a gesture

The Smart Search field

Some browsers use an address bar for navigating the Internet and a separate search bar for conducting searches. Safari combines these features into one bar, which is known as the Smart Search field . The Smart Search field offers suggestions for websites and search terms as you're typing, making surfing online that much easier.

To use the Smart Search field:

Click a suggestion to navigate to a website or conduct a search. You can also type a full web address and press Enter to navigate to a website, just like a regular address bar.

Navigating in Safari

Safari uses three main buttons for navigation: the Back , Forward , and Refresh buttons.

Windows and tabs

Like all browsers, Safari allows you to open new windows to view different pages. In addition, Safari allows you to open multiple websites in the same window using tabs . Tabs are usually more convenient than opening several windows at the same time.

Browsing history

Like all browsers, Safari keeps a record of the websites you visit, which is known as your browsing history . Safari allows you to search your history to find a previously viewed page and delete your history for the sake of privacy.

Downloading files

Safari can display different types of documents, media, and other files, including PDF and MP3 files. But there may be times when you'll want to access a file outside of the browser. To do this, you'll need to download the file directly to your computer.

For example, let's say you need to complete and print a form you find online. You could download it to your computer, then open it with the appropriate program (such as Microsoft Word ) to edit it.

To download a file:

If you click a link to a file, it may download automatically. However, depending on the file type, it may just open within the browser. To prevent a file from opening in Safari, you can use Save Link As to download it to your computer.

For various reasons, many websites do not allow you to download content. For example, YouTube does not offer a way to download its videos.

Safari Profiles are a new way to organize your browsing activity with convenience. I have created different Profiles on Safari separate browsing environments for different purposes, such as work, college, and personal. Each profile has its own set of extensions, Tab Groups, bookmarks, and history.

So, this Safari browser feature can boost your speed and performance as you don’t need to switch between work and personal accounts each time. Sounds cool, right? Go through our detailed guide to create Safari profiles in iOS 17.

2. Quick search results

To save your time, Safari shows quick search results using Smart Search field with iOS 17. It is faster and more responsive than before and shows more relevant and understandable search recommendations.

For example, I wanted to keep up with the ongoing NBA match, so I searched for NBA live scores. Safari displayed a scorecard instantly; thus, I didn’t even have to do a search and visit any website. If you search for “cake,” it will show you the nearest bakery with the option to call and map directions.

3. Advanced Private Browsing

Locking Private tabs feature is my best iOS 17 Safari tips and tricks for iPhone. Private Browsing prevents trackers on sites and deletes your browsing history.

Safari will lock your private tabs when you are not using them. So, you can move around keeping those tabs open. If anyone tries to access it, they must enter your passcode. Also, now Private Browsing removes the trackers from the URLs you visit. Therefore, tracking and identifying your device is quite impossible now.

You can also opt for this advanced tracking protection in all your daily browsing. For that,

Go to Settings → Safari → Advanced .
Tap Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection .

You don’t have to close Safari anymore to search the verification code email and return. The verification codes will be readily accessed on the keyboard, and you may automatically fill them in.

5. Sharing passwords with Family Passwords

Taking the security and convenience to the next level, Apple has introduced an essential Safari feature for your iPhone – Family Password sharing. 7. Share Tab Group to collaborate

Tab groups brings so much convenience to organize browsing activities. Now you can also share a tab group with your friends and collogues to keep up your research.

From the current web page, tap the tabs icon.
Then, on the top right, hit the share icon . If it isn’t visible, go to the top of the tabs.

For the time being, you can only invite people using the Messages app.

8. Change the background of your Tab Group

iOS 16 allows you to customize the start page of your Tabs Group so you can change the layout of Safari. Similar to adding Favourites to the start page, you may also set a custom background using this iPhone Safari trick.

Go to the start page and tap Edit by scrolling down.
Now toggle on Background Image if it’s disabled and choose a wallpaper.

9. Check recently closed tabs for each Tab Group

From the existing Tab Group , go to the start page of Safari.
Scroll down and choose Edit .

10. Add Tab Groups or Safari profiles to your Focus mode

Focus mode is more upgraded and enhanced in iOS 17. It has added a new feature called Filters. Using it, you can limit and restrict other tabs and only see a certain group of Safari tabs. You may also opt for your personalized Safari Profile in Focus mode.

Open Settings → Tap Focus .
Now choose a Focus mode. Here, I have chosen Do Not Disturb .

Besides image translation, you may translate a webpage in Safari . The iOS 16 update has added new language support for Safari translation. So, you can now translate websites with Arabic, Dutch, Indonesian, Korean, Polish, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese text.

14. Passkeys for enhanced security

Passkeys on iOS 16 will take the role of standard passwords when logging into your accounts across websites or apps. Therefore, you will be safeguarded against data breaches, phishing scams, and password-cracking attempts.

With Passkeys, you will authenticate using Touch ID or Face ID instead of manually typing a password when creating or logging in to an account. As a result, it will create unique public and private keys linked to your biometric authentication.

Your iCloud Keychain will save the private key while the public key is kept on the website’s servers. The best part is no one, even Apple, cannot see the private key. However, it will sync to all your other iCloud devices, making it simple for you to log in from any location and device.

15. Easily copy subjects from images

The new Visual Look Up feature is also accessible in the Safari app. So, you can drag objects directly out of any photos on the website. Just long-press on it and tap Copy Subject . So, you may duplicate any internet picture and erase its background. Besides, paste the cutout, save it, or drop it anywhere on your iPhone.

16. Edit suggested strong passwords

18. Safari extensions synchronization

Suppose you have added a Grammarly extension to Safari. But when using Safari on Mac, you need to install the extension again. The good news is that Apple now supports Safari extension synchronization across all your devices.

Open Settings. Go to Safari → Extensions .

Likewise, you can use this same trick to search for anything faster. After copying any text, touch and hold the address bar. Then, hit Paste and Search. There you go!

25. Easily type Top-Level domains

Next up, I’d like to show you a quick way to enter top-level domains in the search bar. Simply touch and hold the tiny “.” period button in the bottom row of the keyboard and then choose from several top-level domain extensions, such as .com, .net, and .org, based on your location.

26. Jump back to the top of the page

While reading an article, you’ve scrolled all the way to the bottom. How would you quickly jump back to the top of the page? By scrolling up? That’s not productive at all.

The smarter way to get it done is by double-tapping the status bar at the top of the screen. It works reliably and makes web browsing a bit smooth sailing. Really.

27. Set a reminder to look at a page at a specific time

Did you know that Siri could help you set a reminder to check out a webpage at a specific time?

Just invoke Siri and say something like, ”Remind me to look at this page today at 9 P.M.” Siri will confirm that it will do the assigned task.

Now, you will get a reminder at the set time to check out that article. Tap on it, and you will be taken to the Reminders app. Then, hit the Safari icon to visit that page. I often use this feature to catch up with my favorite articles at a convenient time. And I would recommend using it as well because it’s very user-friendly.

28. Quickly access forward/backward history

While browsing the web, you’ve gone several pages deep. Now, you might want to quickly access all the backward history. What will you normally do? Keep tapping on the backward button.

No, that’s not the better way to go about it. Simply touch and hold the back button. Now, you will see all of your backward histories. Similarly, you can touch and hold the forward button to view all of your forward histories. So, the next time you want to go back and forth while browsing the web, do not forget to use this nifty trick.

29. Play a video in the background

If you like listening to audio while browsing the web, this tip is for you.

Assuming a video is playing in Safari, press the Home button or swipe up from the Home bar. Now, the video will pause. Bring up the player menu and hit the play button. The video will start playing again in the background.

Keep in mind; YouTube doesn’t support this feature officially. However, if you’ve enabled the YouTube Picture-in-picture mode you can enjoy playing videos in the background.

30. Load the desktop site

Not all sites are perfectly optimized for mobile devices. To be honest, I have come across many websites that look cramped on mobile devices. Thankfully, there is an option to request the desktop version of a site.

To do it, simply tap the AA icon on the address bar and choose Request Desktop Site .

Boom! Safari will instantly present you with the desktop version of the site. You can again revert back to the mobile site in the same way.

31. Change the default Safari search engine

Google is set as the default search engine in Safari.

32. Rearrange tabs

Especially during extensive research, I like to keep tabs in the right order, making it a bit easier to access the specific ones. To rearrange tabs:

Open Safari and hit the tabs icon.
Now, you will see all of your open tabs. Simply touch and hold a specific one and drag it at the top, bottom, or anywhere you want.

Use this simple gesture to keep all of your tabs perfectly organized.

33. Search specific tabs on Safari

The next tip that I’m gonna talk about is searching specific tabs. Save it for the time when you have several open tabs and want to quickly jump onto specific ones.

Hit the tabs icon and then scroll up to reveal the Search Tabs bar.

I don’t think most of you would be aware of this secret trick that lets you close all the searched tabs. Frankly speaking, I was unaware of this hack until I stumbled upon it a few days back.

Just touch and hold the Cancel button, and you will see an option to close all the tabs matching a site. Simply tap it, and all the tabs matching that particular site will be gone!

34. Close all tabs at once

Alternatively, you can also hit the tabs icon once. Then long press the Done button. Finally, tap Close All Tabs, and they will go away!

35. Reopen Recently Closed Tabs

At times after closing all the tabs, I realized I needed to check out some specific ones. And that’s the time this tip came onto the scene.

To reopen recently closed tabs , hit the tabs icon and then touch and hold the plus (+) button. Now, you will see the list of all the tabs you had recently closed.

Next, select the one you want to use. Super handy, isn’t it?

36. Open Incognito tab

Safari comes with an incognito mode to let you search the web with more privacy. The best part about it is that when you enter this mode, the web browser doesn’t store any of your data.

Long press the tabs icon.

There’s another way to go incognito. From the Tabs View screen, tap on your Tabs Group name. Then select Private and confirm by tapping Done . When you want to disable the private browsing mode, simply repeat the same steps I’ve just mentioned. And the general web browsing mode will be back.

37. Clear cookies and history

Moving on, make sure to clear out cookies and history from time to time to prevent the app from being cluttered. And it can also prevent others from guessing what sort of stuff you are browsing these days!

To clean it up, hop into the Settings app → Safari . Then, scroll down and tap Clear History and Website Data twice.

38. Manage all of your saved passwords

Believe me, managing passwords on iOS has never been so painless and seamless.

To manage your passcodes:

Open the Settings app and tap Passwords .
Next, you need to authenticate. Once it’s done, you will see all of your accounts.
Tap on the one you want to manage. At the top right, tap Edit .
Next, make desired changes and tap on Done to confirm.

39. View saved passwords using Siri

Siri makes it incredibly easy to view saved passwords . Say, I want to access the passwords of the Facebook account. I will invoke Siri and say something like, “Show my Facebook passwords.”

Now, I need to authenticate my device. Once done, I will access the Facebook account and the saved password. Told you, it’s super handy.

40. Autofill Passwords

Every time you want to log in to any website account, you don’t need to enter the password manually. To take advantage of this feature, ensure that Autofill Passwords switch is ON inside the Passwords setting.

Going forward, the first time you log in to an account, you will get the option to save it to the iCloud Keychain. So, when you enter your login credentials, the keyboard will automatically pop up the password for your saved account. Tap on it, and all the details will be instantly filled in.

41. Quickly enter Verification Codes

The latest version of iOS has made entering verification codes very simple, thanks to the Two-Factor Authentication .

All you’ve got to do is just hit the text field and tap on the incoming verification code to autofill the confirmation box. That’s really very user-friendly.

42. Change default Password AutoFill provider

Though Apple’s iCloud Keychain works smoothly, using third-party apps is great. To change the default password AutoFill provider, ensure that you’ve already installed your favorite password manager and, ideally, set it up.

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone, and tap Passwords .
Now authenticate and select Password Options .
Next, you will see the compatible third-party password managers installed on your device under Allow Filling From . Choose your preferred option and follow the instruction to authenticate it, and you are done!

43. Convert a webpage into a PDF

While browsing the web, whenever I stumble upon an article, I like to save it to my special collection. That’s when the option to convert a webpage into PDF comes into the picture.

Let’s say I want to convert a webpage into a PDF.

Tap the Share button and choose Print in the share sheet.

Also, you can annotate the file using the Markup tool and save it to the Files app. That’s a pretty intuitive iOS feature.

44. Quickly add any article to your reading list

If you are a voracious reader, this tip is for you. The next time you want to save an article to read later:

Touch and hold the book icon .
Choose Add to Reading List in the menu.

In case you wish to save it for offline reading, tap Save Automatically .

45. Make the most of Reader Mode

Last but not least, Safari comes with a useful Reader Mode to enhance the reading experience.

Tap the AA icon on the address bar.
Next, select Website Settings from the context menu.

Therefore, whenever you are browsing through that website, it will eliminate all the unnecessary stuff to make it easier for you to read the article. That’s not all; you can tap on the text button and choose from several fonts and themes to further boost your reading experience.

Safari underwent a big design change last year with iOS 15, enabling some great extensions that can improve your web browsing experience – but some of its best features have been around for years.

These old-school tricks don’t get much airtime anymore, meaning some users may never find them. But with these six hidden tips in your arsenal, you’ll have a much better time surfing the web. How many of them do you already know?

Perfect zoom

Depending on the design of the website you’re looking at, sometimes columns of text appear way too small to read. Simply double tap the text and Safari will automatically zoom in exactly far enough to fill the width of the screen.

Back to the top

After scrolling down through a long web article, you can instantly return to the top of the page by tapping the status bar at the top of the screen. If Safari has automatically hidden the top menu, you’ll need to double-tap the status bar instead.

Remove distractions

When reading an article, tap the four-lines button on the top menu. This engages Reader View and will strip away the cruft and reformat the page into a clear, easy-to-digest layout with no ads or distracting font choices.

Search the page

If you’re looking for a particular reference on a website, simply type the word you’re looking for into the address bar at the top of the screen. Instead of pressing go, tap Find “your word” to comb through the entire whole page in an instant.

Bespoke buttons

Safari is the default browser on Apple products, and while Chrome is more popular and Firefox offers more customization options, Cupertino's browser has a few tricks of its own, including more power-efficiency than the battery-hogging Chrome. Here's how to get the most out of your Safari web browsing experience.

Arrange Your Tabs

Got a lot of hard-to-manage browser tabs? Quickly organize them on Mac using the Window > Arrange Tab By command. This menu lets you arrange tabs by the webpage title or website. Make your choice, and the tabs will automatically move into their new order.

On iPad, long-press on a tab to see the Arrange Tab By menu. iPhone users can open the Tab Overview menu and long press any tab to move it around.

Keep Track of Recently Closed Tabs

Have you ever closed a few tabs and later realized you still needed one of them? Instead of individually undoing each closed tab, go to History > Recently Closed on Mac to view the most recent tabs you dismissed.

On mobile, long-press on the + icon on iPad to see recently closed tabs. For iPhone, first tap the Tab Overview button, then long-press on the + icon.

Customize the Safari Toolbar

Save Pages to PDF

Safari lets you save a web page to your computer via the File > Save As command, which can create a full web archive file or save the site text. Those formats have their uses, but saving as a PDF is probably more useful for most users.

To do that, click File > Export as PDF . All page elements will be saved in a shareable PDF format. On mobile, tap the share icon to send a web page as a PDF. You can then discard or save it to the Files app.

Maintain Continuity With Handoff

The Handoff feature allows seamless transitions between Apple devices. Start emails, write text messages, or enter contacts on a Mac and pick them up on an iPad, for example. This feature also works with Safari, so you can start browsing a page on one device and finish on another.

Sign into iCloud and activate Handoff on each device. On Mac, go to System Preferences > General and tick the box next to Allow Handoff. On iPad and iPhone, go to Settings > Handoff and toggle the switch on.

Once activated, start browsing on one device like normal, like the Mac. When you move to a second device—let's say the iPad—there should be an icon of your first device sitting atop the Safari icon on the iPad in the Dock . Tap it, and you can pick up where you left off on the first device.

Save for Later With Safari's Reading List

If you come across an interesting article you don't have time to read, save it for later with Safari's built-in Reading List. This feature works across multiple Apple devices via iCloud, so you can save a long read on a Mac and read it on your iPhone.

Access the Reading List via the sidebar icon on Safari desktop, or the book icon in Safari for iPad and iPhone, then choose the eyeglasses icon to view your article list. Add a new article to the list by opening the share pane and choosing Add to Reading List.

The best part about this feature is that any item on your list can be made available offline . Set these articles to download automatically on Mac by going to Safari > Preferences > Advanced and checking the box next to "Save articles for offline reading automatically." On iOS, head to Settings > Safari > Automatically Save Offline and toggle it to on.

Strip Away Distractions With Safari Reader

Safari Reader strips away distractions like ads for an uninterrupted view of the content on the page. Navigate to the article you want to read; on the desktop , supported sites will display a hamburger-like ( ) icon in the address bar; click that for a stripped-down view. Then click the aA icon to change the page's font, color, and size, if necessary.

On mobile (pictured above), devices running iOS 12 and below will display the hamburger-like icon on; on iOS 13, it's aA . In both versions, tap the aA to change the page's font, color, and size.

Manage Web Forms With AutoFill

If you hate entering your email credentials, credit card data, or mailing address over and over, save that information with AutoFill.

Open Safari > Preferences > AutoFill on Mac to gain access to saved contacts, usernames and passwords, credit cards, and other forms. Click Edit next to the appropriate category and add the necessary information for safe keeping. On mobile, go to Settings > Safari > AutoFill , for contacts and credit cards and Settings > Passwords & Accounts for passwords.

If you have iCloud Keychain set up, your personal information will be available to you no matter what device you use.

Create Strong Passwords With Safari

Safari can suggest strong, randomized passwords with the press of a button. When you're filling in login information for a website on desktop, tap the key icon in the form box to make the browser generate a secure password.

After you use the password to log in, you can save it to AutoFill for easy reference later. To manage your existing passwords, go to Safari > Preferences > Passwords and add or remove any items listed.

For this feature to work on iPhone or iPad, you must first ensure that iCloud Keychain is authorized to fill in information on your device. Go to Settings > Password & Accounts > iCloud Keychain to allow this feature. Now when you try to sign up for a service, select the key icon on the device keyboard and tap Suggest New Password.

Start Where You Left Off

On desktop, Safari will give you a clean slate by default each time you open the browser. To start where you left off instead, go to Safari > Preferences > General . The first drop-down menu will ask how you want the browser to open. Choose "Select All Windows from last session" so that the next time you open Safari, your previous tabs will automatically reopen.

Safari will also save your spot on iPad and iPhone, even if you close the browser. Change this by going to Settings > Safari > Close Tabs and choosing how long Safari will save open tabs before automatically closing them.

Seamless Sharing

Thanks to the Share pane built into Apple’s browser, users can share content with others or pull information into separate apps. Select the Share icon in Safari to send pages to Mail, iMessage, Notes, and Reminders, or share through AirDrop.

You can also share highlighted text and inline links. On Mac, right-click your target and select the Share option from the menu. On an iPhone or iPad, simply hold down on the selection and choose Share. You can now move your selection into Mail or iMessage for easy sharing, or Notes for later reference.

Safari offers an easy way to preview pages and save you a click. On a Mac, hard-press on a link to open a pop-up preview of the page, which you can then click to open as a new tab.

On mobile, long-press a link to open a full menu of options for opening, downloading, and sharing the page. This feature will also work with any item saved in Favorites, Reading List, or History on mobile. Just long-press on any entry listed to preview the page.

Safari Extensions

Just like Chrome and Firefox, Safari offers third-party add-ons to enhance your desktop browsing experience, with extensions for bookmarking, news, productivity, security, social media, shopping, and more. Go to Apple's Safari Extensions page to browse and download, or go to Safari > Safari Extensions to head straight to the App Store and search. Manage extensions in Safari > Preferences > Extensions .

Set Safari Dark Mode

Safari doesn’t have an official dark mode, but it does take cues from the operating system when it comes to visual themes. So If you activate dark mode on your device, it will also change the color of the browser. To do this on Mac, go to System Preferences > General and select the Dark theme.

Starting with iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 , your iPhone and iPad will also support a dark mode. Go to Settings > Display & Brightness > Dark to set the dark theme, and Safari will automatically change colors.

Personalize Every Webpage

Control how each individual website acts and what data it collects through personalized Safari webpage settings. On Mac, right-click the URL bar (or open the Safari menu) and select Settings for This Website to open a settings page, then make choices about how you want the site to act for you.

The menu includes options such as marking Safari Reader as the preferred article layout, specifying default zoom percentage, auto-play video controls, and how the browser reacts to pop-up windows. Privacy options are also available, allowing you to determine who has access to your camera, microphone, and location.

Navigate to Safari > Preferences > Websites to set these permissions for any website currently open in Safari. If you’re on mobile, go to Settings > Safari and scroll down to the Settings for Websites section to set general guidelines for how all websites should behave.

Protect Your Privacy in Safari

Apple goes to great lengths to drive home that user privacy is a top priority across its devices and software. In your settings, navigate to Safari > Preferences > Privacy on Mac or Settings > Safari on mobile devices and toggle on the option to deter website tracking by default.

That same menu allows you to block cookies and mark individual website data for removal on Mac. iPhone and iPad users have a Clear History and Website Data button that will wipe the information from any device connected to their iCloud account.

If you’re worried about Apple tracking you, use Private Browsing via File > New Private Window , or use the keyboard shortcut Command + Shift + N to open a new browser window that won't track browser history, search history, or AutoFill information. On mobile, long-press the Tab Overview icon and choose New Private Tab, or open the Tab Overview screen and tap Private.

How to use Safari on an iPhone or iPad

The iPhone's always been great for surfing the web, and Apple 's mobile version of Safari just keeps getting better. The browser boasts a sleek, efficient interface, which goes almost fullscreen the second you scroll (flick downwards to get the toolbars back), and also makes it easy to find content, via powerful web and in-page searching.

Articles you don't have time to peruse can be stashed for later, favourite sites can be bookmarked and shared, and you can subscribe to sites you love, so that you never miss an update.

For sites you visit daily, shortcuts can be added to your Home Screen by tapping Share and selecting Add to Home Screen. Most sites provide an app-like icon, meaning the shortcuts look perfectly at home among your apps.

1. Visit websites

At the top of the screen is the Unified Smart Search Field, into which you can type a URL (such as www.techaradar.com) or a search term, then tap Go.

During searches, Safari will attempt to provide intelligent results for locations, iTunes content or Wikipedia articles. Also, try visiting a site and performing a search.

Then next time you'll be able to search directly from the Unified Smart Search Field: just type the URL, a space, then your search term, and tap Go.

2. Text searches

One neat trick that some people overlook is the ability to search through the text of a page using the Unified Smart Search field.

Enter a word and scroll down to On This Page. Tap the Find "word" panel and Safari will highlight in yellow all instances of that word on the page.

You can move through matched words using the Next and Previous Match buttons in the bottom left, or enter a new search term in the search field in the bottom right of the screen.

3. Saving images

You can save images from Safari by tapping and holding on them until the menu appears; now choose Save Image and it'll be sent to the Photos app.

Return to your Home Screen and open Photos to view the image in your collection. You can share the image on Facebook, Twitter or Flickr by tapping Share.

4. Navigating web pages

Flick your finger up and down to scroll up and down through a web page. You can use the pinch-to-zoom gesture to zoom in on text and images, or double-tap a part of the screen to intelligently zoom to that element.

Simply tap on links to open them, and move back and forward using the icons at the left of the menu bar at the foot of the screen. Tap and hold on links to bring up a menu with options such as 'Open In A New Tab' or 'Add To Reading List'.

5. Adding bookmarks

To bookmark a page, tap the Share button and select Bookmark. By default, Bookmarks are added to Favourites (the grid of icons you see when opening a new tab), but you can select an alternative location.

Tap Save to bookmark the page. A faster way to add a page to your Favourites is to tap the URL, tap the clock, then tap Add to Favorites. Saved bookmarks can be browsed by tapping the Bookmarks icon, and managed/deleted using the Edit button.

6. Set up a Reading List

Safari Reading List is a great way to keep track of articles that you want to read at a later date. Tap the Share button, then Add to Reading List to add the page to your Reading List.

Now tap Bookmarks, then the Reading List icon (it looks like a pair of glasses). As you tap items in your reading list they'll disappear from the list; you can see items you've already read by tapping Show All at the bottom right of the screen.

7. Safari Reader

Safari Reader is a great way to view a web page without distractions (such as flashing adverts or animated graphics).

To view a page in Reader mode, tap on the Reader icon just to the left of the web address in the Unified Smart Search Field – the icon looks like four horizontal lines.

When you've finished, tap the Reader icon again to return to the standard page view.

8. iCloud Tabs

iCloud tabs show web pages open on other devices linked to your Apple ID. Tap the tabs button and then scroll down to see the list.

Tap anything in the list to open it. You can also remove an iCloud tab by swiping from right to left and tapping Delete.

9. Share via AirDrop

You can share pages wirelessly with other iOS 8 users using the AirDrop feature. Swipe your finger up from the bottom of the screen to open Control Centre, and tap AirDrop, then Everyone (or Contacts Only to be more selective).

Now in Safari tap the Share button, and anyone nearby with AirDrop turned on will appear in the Action sheet. Tap a person and they'll receive an invitation to view the page.

10. Shared Links

To access the Shared Links feature, tap on the Bookmarks icon in Safari and then tap the Shared Links tab (represented by the '@' symbol).

By default, the tab will show links shared via any Twitter accounts you've set up in Settings > Twitter. Very handy. But it goes further…

Visit any website that regularly updates, such as a blog, then return to the Shared Links tab and tap Subscriptions. If the site has a feed you can subscribe to, Add Current Site will be in blue.

Tap this to add the site to your list. Headlines will then be displayed; tap any entry to view the associated web page.

How to stop Safari from opening links or files when you use a different Mac browser

Apple is fond of its web browser, Safari, even to the extent that some readers with other preferences find it difficult to consistently get Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or other browsers to open links to web pages in other apps.

The first thing to double-check is macOS’s systemwide browser default preference. Go to  > System Settings > Desktop & Dock . Under “Default web browser,” check that your preferred browser is selected. Even if it is, some readers report changing it fixed their link problem:

Select Safari.
Quit System Settings.
Launch System Settings and return to Desktop & Dock.
Choose your preferred browser.

You should be able to set (or reset) a preferred systemwide browser in System Settings.

Some people have found that this solves the issue for some of their links and files, but that files in the Finder with the .webloc extension (“Internet location”) became locked to Safari started at least two releases of macOS ago. There doesn’t seem to be an easy solution for this.

You can check if that’s the case on your Mac:

In the Finder, type webloc into the Search field.
Almost certainly, some files with .webloc will appear, as some are created by browsers and stored in caches. Select any one of those files.
Choose File > Get Info .
If “Open with” is locked to “Safari.app (default),” it will be grayed out and clicking the lock in the lower-right corner and authenticating your user login won’t change it.

A workaround for all scenarios involves the third-party app Choosy ($10). The app intercepts links in both apps and web browsers. You can set global behavior or create rules so that links in specific apps or even links to particular websites are opened with a browser you specify. This can be useful if you use a browser that has compatibility issues with a website, which I’ve seen with both health insurance and banking sites where a non-Safari browser is the only way to access your data.

Choosy lets you set browser preferences that override macOS behavior, as well as define rules for what browser should be used for very specific purposes.

How can I clear my browser cache, cookies & history?

To clear the cache, cookies or history please click your browser below and follow the steps provided.

In the browser bar, enter chrome://settings/clearBrowserData
Select the items you want to clear (you can choose Clear browsing history, 'Clear download history', 'Empty the cache', 'Delete cookies and other site and plug-in data').
From the dropdown menu, you can choose the period of time you want to clear cached information for. To clear your entire cache, select the beginning of time .
Click Clear browsing data .

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer 8, 9, 10 & 11

Click 'Tools' and select Delete Browsing History .
Deselect 'Preserve Favourites website data', and select Temporary Internet files, Cookies , and History .
Click Delete .
From the 'Tools' or 'History' menu, select Clear Recent History (If the menu bar is hidden, press Alt to make it visible).
Select from the "Time range to clear" drop-down menu. To clear your entire cache, select Everything .
Click the down arrow next to "Details" to choose which elements of the history to clear. Click Clear Now .
Click Close , and then click OK to exit.

To clear history:

In the lower left, tap Clear .

WWDC 2024: Apple announces new Safari with Highlights and 'distraction-free' Reader sidebar

Safari is getting an AI-powered revamp.

Apple didn't forget about its browser amidst the slew of AI features announced at WWDC . Safari now has a Highlights feature for recapping articles and web pages. In the new Safari release, users can get automated summaries of the page their browsing, such as directions to a location, more about TV shows they're reading about, or travel and hotel information.

Safari also has a reader module, which provides a "distraction free" way of browsing in a sidebar that shows a summary and table of contents. The idea is for users to quickly get a recap of a long document or web page without having to leave the page to, say, paste the text into ChatGPT for a summary.

AI-powered Safari is similar to what Microsoft has with its browser, Edge , which also has summarization features and a Copilot sidebar chat. Google Chrome was also testing an " SGE while browsing " feature, but hasn't announced anything about it lately.

Interact with text in a picture in Safari on Mac

With Live Text, you can select the text in a photo or image, then work with the words and numbers—for example, get a map of an address or send email to an email address.

Open Safari for me

The text can be words, a phone number, an email address, a website address, or a street address.

Move the pointer over the text, then drag to select it.

Control-click the selected text.

Do one of the following:

Copy: Choose Copy. You can then paste the text into another document or app.

horizontal lines on screen in browser

I notice thin horizontal lines across the browser window when I am on Facebook. If I scroll up and down they disappear and then reappear if I scroll again. Reloading gets rid of them. I can't tell if this is a problem with Google Chrome or the MacBook. Anybody else see this? Thanks.

I have seen some rendering inconsistancy with FB software in the Safari browser; repainting the webpage sorts the issue.

Yep, I'm getting them too, the exact way you describe. I'm using Google Chrome on a Dell laptop, so maybe it is the browser. Did you find anything out?

Well, since I'm on a MacBook Pro and you are on a Dell it looks like the problem is either in Chrome or Facebook and not the computer. That's a relief. I have a hunch that it has to do with rendering speed. The other time I notice the lines is in WebMail, again within the Chrome browser. If I see the same problem in another browser I'll re post.

Having exactly the same problem you described. Up to now seems to be only in Chrome and in Facebook when scrolling. No need to reload to make them dissapear, just keep on scrolling. Any ideas how to resolve the issue?

I would think it was Facebook except that it did it in Earthlink Web Mail too. So the browser is probably the culprit - some small detail or incompatability. This has never happened outside of a browser.

chrome is the problem. I uninstalled chrome using clean my mac and then reinstalled a fresh copy... and the lines disappeared

I just got my first ever mac (macbook pro maxed out) and was thinking it was a problem with my new computer! I also upgraded the memory to 16gb and was wondering if that was it... Here's an example of what I see: http://minus.com/l7n7NJiv9ErHW

Also, here's the patterns I've noticed for this behavior over the last couple days:

1. Seems to only happen in chrome

2. Seems to only happen in facebook, in particular a facebook page with two sides, like the one in the link above. If I look in my newsfeed/homepage, the issue doesn't appear since it's not a split screen with 2 sides.

3. If I scroll slower I see more lines that are closer together

4. If I get the lines and don't touch anything, they sometimes seem to disappear after a few seconds.

5. If I move my cursor over either the left or right side, that sides lines will disappear, but the lines on the other side remain.

One more thing... I'm not sure if this is related, but in facebook on chrome I also have an issue where youtube videos and other embedded audio/video in posts will stop playing after a bit (maybe 30 or so seconds) and there will just be blank space where the embedded multimedia was.

Now the most interesting thing.

When I sterted having these horizontal lines I suspected that it may be a GPU hardware problem.

I went to my local Apple dealer - Saturn (Berlin, German) and the Apple Customer Service guy pointed me at

t opic and informed me that it is definitely a browser's rendering issue. And I thought that it was ever since.

Three days later after I watched a movie and played a video game I started my Logic 9 and I noticed this:

Do you see these 2 black lines? It means that the problem is not only in video rendering of the browser's ouput.

For me it still seems like it is a hardware problem.

I've been using computers for last 20 years and I have never seen that any software could cause such video artefacts. I hope that I am wrong, becaus if it is a harware problem it will be very hard to make Apple to exchange the GPU or the entire logic board until it wil die completely. And the thing that it may happen after 2-4 years of the use of the computer, when it will be out of warranty and apple care 3years limit.

Similar thing happened to some of Apple Macbooks users with ATI Radeon X1600 mobile and the GPUs on 2006 and 2007 Macbook Pros.

The idea that this may be related to heat is intriguing. But I watch the cpu and there is no correlation. I had a problem with the fan coming on constantly a few months ago and solved it by watching the activity monitor and rebooting when the numbers got really high. For example the Chrome rendering PID is 16256 as of this writing. I honestly think it is something related to the these kinds of variables. I never use Safari because it is so glitchy. But Chrome is insane. Now, in addition to the lines, any page with a black background blinks after a few seconds and the black is replaced by white. Then the text disappears (white on white). AAagggH!

Today Apple kicked off its 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference, revealing groundbreaking new technologies and features during a keynote that was live-streamed from Apple Park to millions around the world. During the weeklong event, developers and students will have unique access to Apple experts, as well as insight into new tools, frameworks, and features to help elevate their apps and games.

This year’s keynote revealed Apple Intelligence , the personal intelligence system that combines the power of generative models with users’ personal context — at the core of iPhone, iPad, and Mac to deliver intelligence that’s incredibly useful and relevant. Major updates also come to iOS 18 , iPadOS 18 , macOS Sequoia , and watchOS 11 , including the biggest-ever redesign of the Photos app, game-changing productivity tools, and new ways for users to express themselves and customize their devices. visionOS 2 brings powerful new ways to interact with Apple Vision Pro and exciting updates to spatial photos and Mac Virtual Display, and tvOS 18 infuses useful information in Apple TV+ films and shows on users’ biggest screen in the home.

Instalamos una desde cero cada uno de ellos, sin complementos ni extensión.
Cerramos todos los programas y procesos innecesarios.
Corrimos cuatro diferentes pruebas 3 veces.
Los resultados fueron en base al promedio de resultados.

Para probar Microsoft Edge y Safari en sus plataformas nativas, ejecutamos pruebas comparativas del navegador en dos computadoras portátiles separadas: Windows y macOS . Enchufamos ambos para obtener el máximo rendimiento de potencia.

Usamos una Lenovo ThinkPad con el procesador Intel Core i7-10850H de 6 núcleos, 16 GB de memoria del sistema y un SSD de 500 GB para estas pruebas.

Well, since I'm on a MacBook Pro and you are on a Dell it looks like the problem is either in Chrome or Facebook and not the computer. That's a relief. I have a hunch that it has to do with rendering speed. The other time I notice the lines is in WebMail, again within the Chrome browser. If I see the same problem in another browser I'll re post.
