Despite only manufacturing golf shoes since 2016, Under Armour has quickly started making some fo the best golf shoes on the market. Its latest flagship model comes in the shape of the HOVR Tour SL, a shoe with a full-knit upper and the backing of bio-mechanist Jean-Jaques Rivet. It's a bold golf shoe with even bolder claims, so I was excited to take it out on course and see what it was all about. 

I've got to start with the highlight of this shoe which is the spikeless outsole. By using a mixture of TPU on the centre of the outsole and rubber nubs on the toe and heel, Under Armour has built a shoe on one of the best spikeless outsoles currently on the market. I had to regularly remind myself I wasn't wearing spikes, such is the grip on offer from this outsole and I truly think this has all year round wearability. While the 2022 FootJoy Pro SL , FootJoy Fuel and new Ecco Biom C4 offer very sound spikeless grip, for me Under Armour has taken it a step further. 

To aid this general feeling of grip and stability, the HOVR Tour SL also features an external heel counter to help achieve a locked-in feeling when the shoe is on. While I was cautious that this might be a bit firm, it only adds to how well supported your foot feels, locking it in place in a comfortable manner. Indeed, the less your feet move around in a shoe when you swing a golf club, the less they'll ache after a round. 

The knit upper is the next most significant part of this shoe, and it was another impressive feature. I'm not a huge fan of knit golf shoes - previous knit models have tended to offer less support versus a leather upper shoe and they can be more prone to staining. Under Armour was clearly aware of the pitfalls of some knit golf shoes and tackled them head on. 

Firstly, the HOVR Tour SL uses Under Armour's proprietary Intelliknit technology that claims to overcome the performance shortfalls of a knit upper. Using 'stretch' yarns and 'lockdown' yarns combined, the shoe gives you support in the parts of the foot where you need it most, and flexibility elsewhere. There is a tendency in golf to forget that all of our golf swings - no matter where you are on the handicap spectrum - are highly athletic movements, and we need golf shoes to support those movements. This was certainly Under Armour's philosophy when crafting the HOVR Tour SL and it feels like it's been achieved. 

Knit shoes tend to be a bit on the clammy side too, but the HOVR Tour SL excelled in keeping my feet at a comfortable temperature, being very breathable even on an unseasonably warm March weekend. The Intelliknit upper is also coated with a waterproof membrane that keeps water from penetrating the fabric and allowing it to wick off the surface. As the shoe doesn't have a conventional tongue, water can't get in the shoe unless you step in ankle high water. In the same vein, the shoe also wipes clean very easily, again quashing one of my initial concerns about a knit shoe. In summary, banish any preconceptions you have had about knit uppers, as it feels like Under Armour has cracked something special here with the Intelliknit system. 

While the shoe is fit to burst with new technology, it was good to see Under Armour's HOVR cushioning compound has returned in the midsole. This gives a nice amount of soft cushioning under your foot and, while the shoe is a little firm under foot when you first try them on, it doesn't take long for the HOVR foam to loosen up and the knit upper to mould nicely into the shape of your foot. 

It's very hard to pick faults with this shoe and in theory this should appeal to a very wide range of golfers. While the styling suited my eye, I can see how it could divide opinion. The knit upper will certainly divide opinion too but, as I've said throughout, the HOVR Tour SL has done a lot to take all the pitfalls of a knit golf shoe and make them right. If you stability is at the top of your list when it comes to buying a new golf shoe, you can't look much further than this. If stability isn't on your 'must-have' list when it comes to a golf shoe, I'd seriously considering moving it right to the top.

Under Armour HOVR Tour SL Performance Review

Despite the uninspiring name, the Under Armour HOVR Tour SL is far from an underwhelming and generic performer. 

Under Armour’s footprint on TOUR is fairly small compared to the likes of Nike, Adidas, FJ, and Puma, but after giving these bad boys a run, there’s absolutely no reason why the Under Armour HOVR Tour SL shouldn’t be in your golf bag.

The awesome, futuristic look drew me in, but the performance kept me coming back. With that being said, let’s take an in-depth look at the HOVR Tour SL.

The Under Armour HOVR Tour SL features an all-knit upper, something UA calls IntelliKnit. The IntelliKnit upper was designed to provide a unique combination of stretch, lockdown, breathability, and comfort.

Marketing ploy? No way. I found these claims to be absolutely true. From the first time I put these on, I found the IntelliKnit upper to be extremely comfortable. I loved the stretchy feel. On top of feeling comfortable, the upper did a good job at fitting more snuggly where it needed to.

Often with knits, there is worry about the material being too stretchy, but I found the IntelliKnit upper a perfect combo of flexibility, stretchability, and rigidity (if that makes sense). It held me in place, but in a gentle, comfortable way.

On top of that, because the Under Armour HOVR Tour SL is made primarily of the IntelliKnit, the shoes were very breathable, which I love. Right now in Arizona, we’re hitting well over 100 degrees, so I need maximum breathability. The HOVR Tour SL absolutely fits the bill.

The Under Armour HOVR Tour SL features a spikeless TPU outsole with injected soft rubber nubs placed where more flexibility is needed.

UA’s goal? Make a spikeless shoe with the traction of a spiked one. They accomplished this feat with what they call “UA Rotational Resistance Traction”. 

The combination of the rigid, TPU nubs and the injected softer nubs did in fact provide plenty of traction. I took these on a trip to Utah where it’s been a little wetter than Arizona and experienced more of the same. 

When going after a drive on a longer Par 5, or hitting off of an awkward lie for my second shot into a Par 4, I felt completely confident in the setup. The only time my feet moved is when I wanted them too. That’s the sign of a good traction pattern.

Admittedly I expected great things out of these, mainly because the pattern looks very similar to the FootJoy Flex that I reviewed a few weeks back. I wasn’t disappointed.

Need something to keep you planted in wet or dry conditions while maintaining the low-key looks and feel of a spikeless shoe? This should be your go-to.

I’ve never experienced HOVR before, which might be weird to some. I stopped playing in UA basketball shoes back when they still used Charged, so this was a new experience for me. 

The HOVR midsole was good, not great. My personal preference for golf shoe cushions is firm but comfortable. I found the HOVR to be plenty firm. The firmness helps transfer energy from your back leg to your front leg during the downswing because it keeps your foot stable. I don’t want to feel like I’m sinking into the shoe when I transfer my weight to that side, so that’s why firmness is important to me.

And as a decent-sized human, the comfort side of things is important, too. I want some comfort, and I don’t want my feet to hurt after the round (not asking much here). These provided adequate comfort, but nothing to really write home about.

Because the HOVR cushion checked most of the boxes for me, I’m still calling it a win in the cushion department. You aren’t going to be disappointed by these, but won’t be blown away. Nonetheless, I’m not complaining. The low-profile cushion is probably the preference for some of you!

My biggest annoyance with the Under Armour HOVR Tour SL is the lockdown. Despite these fitting true to size, I found myself experiencing quite a bit of heel slippage…something you just can’t have when you’re making powerful moves in the golf swing.

Maybe it’s due to the non-traditional lacing system, or the shape of the heel cup, but my heel was just moving all over the place anytime I walked or swung a club.

I can’t say that this caused me to play any worse than normal, but it was quite irritating, and for sure didn’t HELP my performance. With that being said though, maybe if you have a wider foot you’ll find these to fit a little more snuggly!

Under Armour HOVR Tour SL Summary

Despite the minor lockdown issues of the Under Armour HOVR Tour SL, I’ve had an extremely hard time reaching for any other pair when I head out to the course. As I mentioned at the beginning, the awesome looks drew me in, but the performance has me hooked.

If I could sum up the Under Armour HOVR Tour SL, I would say that it’s a great-looking shoe with spikeless traction that punches above its weight, a fantastic knit upper, and cushioning that doesn’t hold it back.

If you can swallow the possible lockdown issues and the fairly steep $180 price tag, I’d say snatch up a pair of these immediately!

I bought a pair11 weeks ago and wore them 9 times. Grit has somehow worked it’s way inside the lining at the side of the heel and I can’t remove it with tearing or cutting the lining, which to me suggests a design fault. Been in touch with Under Armour and they’d basically said tough luck as it was 11 weeks since the purchase. On that basis I’d avoid these shoes as my pair are not fit for purpose.

Under Armour HOVR Tour SL Shoe Review

Since bursting on to the scene in 2016 as the 'golf brand for athletes', Under Armour has become one of the most popular options on the market when it comes to golf shoes.

Their latest range for 2022 again features input from JJ Rivet, one of the leading sports biomechanists in the world, and includes an update to their HOVR range.

The new HOVR Tour SL is designed for golfers looking for the lightweight ease of a spikeless shoe, but with all the performance benefits of a tour-level spiked shoe.

The full-knit upper on the new shoe uses Under Armour's Intelliknit technology to combine stretch yarns and lockdown yarns to provide more stability in the golf swing. This is said to lock you down in the areas where you need support and allow for more stretch where you need flexibility.

The Intelliknit has been treated with NeverWet technology and has a waterproof membrane, so that golfers can wear the shoe in even the worst weather conditions without fear of water getting in.

The design of the outsole is a combination of rotational, horizontal and vertical traction technologies which encourage golfers to better transfer power from the ground into the swing.

The Hovr Tour SL provides spike-like stability and grip thanks to a combination of a lightweight TPU, UA Rotational Resistance Traction and injected rubber spikes in the heel and forefoot.

On the outsole there are also strategical flex channels to further increase traction, stability and power by keeping the foot grounded through the swing for longer.

An external heel counter locks the heel further back into the shoe, creating a fit that promotes maximum stability and power.

Under Armour Hovr Tour SL Shoe Review

Under Armour have been one of the brands to lead the way when it comes to golf shoes blending more and more with everyday athletic trainers, and this latest addition to the HOVR range is no different.

The shoe immediately strikes you as an ultra-modern design which has plenty of hallmarks of a trainer, albeit it is also easy to see that its packed with technology too.

The black, red and grey colourway is a useful choice if you want to get a little more use out of these shoes as it means they'll be less likely to show up dirt and mud - although there is also a grey colourway too which gives them more of a summer feel.

To be honest I wasn't a huge fan of the look of the shoe. The contrast between the knit on top and then the thick plastic midsole looks a bit like Under Armour are trying to squeeze two separate shoes into one and I'm not completely sold on the design, even though the grey option was better in my opinion.

With a knitted upper and mesh sock liner, I was expecting these shoes to be comfortable and they certainly didn't disappoint.

As soon as you slide the shoe on (this may take a little bit of getting used to if you haven't used a shoe like this before) you can feel the knit wrapping around the top of your foot very snugly, it's a completely different feeling to having to use laces to tighten the fit.

The laces themselves come more into play on the side of the foot, and tightening them seems to secure the side of the foot rather than the top to give you that 'locked-in' feel.

Initially the sole felt a little firm underfoot, almost as if I was wearing spiked shoes, but over time this actually came to be more of a reassurance because it served as a reminder of the traction and stability of the shoe.

Under Armour have again worked with JJ Rivet, an expert in sports biomechanics, in the development of this shoe to provide a combination of traction and ground force reaction to help you get the most from your swing.

Performance

I have played two rounds of golf in these shoes - once on a warm, dry spring day and once on a cold, wet morning - and both times I can confirm the performance was fantastic.

After just a couple of holes I felt as if I had got used to the fit and feel of the shoe, because there is a little bit of a contrast in the slipper-like feel of the upper compared to the relative firmness of the sole.

In all honesty I'm really not sure that you'd know that this was a spikeless shoe had you not seen the sole before you put them on, such was the traction provided. I felt so secure when walking and swinging, regardless of the lie, with just the right level of feel for the turf allowing me to use the ground during the swing to my advantage.

One drawback I was that the Hovr Tour SL did tend to pick up quite a bit of debris, resulting in you having to give them a good blast with the air compressor at the end of each round, but I suppose it probably suggests that the traction is good.

Overall the stability was great. Knitted shoes like this can often feel like you don't get much support around the top of the foot and even into the ankle when walking and swinging, but the Hovr Tour SL provided all of the help you'd want from a shoe.

The second round I played was a good chance to test whether these shoes were truly waterproof and I'm happy to report that they passed with flying colours. There's also a one year waterproof warranty in case something does happen to go wrong.

Under Armour HOVR Tour SL Shoe Verdict

A price tag of £150 means that the Hovr Tour SL is pretty reasonably for a spikeless golf shoe, putting it in a similar ballpark to other leading models in this category like the FootJoy Pro|SL (£159.99) and Adidas ZG21 (£160).

It's packed with game-improvement technology for that price though, and the contemporary looks combined with the fact that it comes from a trusted brand such as Under Armour means that this shoe should do pretty well, most likely with younger golfers.

As I mentioned earlier the design of the shoe wasn't quite to my taste but I couldn't really fault the performance at all.

Knit shoes can sometimes be a bit stuffy, particularly when playing in the summer, but the Hovr Tour SL was breathable and comfortable even when testing in warmer conditions.

If you want a modern-looking, new pair of spikeless shoes for the summer, but don't want to compromise on performance, then these should definitely be on your shortlist.

Would I Wear Them?

Based on performance alone, absolutely. And while the Black/Red colourway wasn't my favourite, the Grey colourway would definitely be a good option if you're playing golf in the dry summer months.

Under Armour have released their latest golf shoe. Here is what you need to know. 

Under Armour (UA) has unveiled their latest golf shoe: the Hovr Tour SL.

The brand say their new design is for golfers looking for the "ultimate spikeless traction" with the performance benefits of a tour-level spiked shoe. 

Hovr Tour SL is the product of Under Armour's collaboration with leading bio-mechanist Jean-Jacques Rivet, who contributes to their data driven designs. 

So what is new? Well UA have used technology called Intelliknit to overcome the performance limitations to knitted footwear previously seen in golf shoes. 

Where regular knit uppers tend to bee too unstructured to support the force of a golf swing, the Hovr Tour SL boasts something a bit different. 

It uses a combination of stretch yarns and lockdown yarns to support the golf swing and "lock you down" when you need to be stable.

Elsewhere, the Intelliknit also boasts their NeverWet waterproof membrane, meaning golfers can wear the UA Hovr Tour SL in any conditions. 

UA have injected rubber spikes in the heel and forefoot to deliver true "spike-like stability" and grip throughout the golf swing. 

There is also an external heel counter to lock your heel further back into the shoe, creating the ultimate fit for producing maximum stability and power.

Tour Itinerary

With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out

• - How much this 1917 revolution cost the people;
• - Whether they actually got the freedom they wanted and was it worth it;
• - What happened over the next 74 years;
• - Who were the main political communist leaders of the Soviet Union;
• - Were Russians happy and satisfied with the Soviet Union?

Our tour itinerary will lie in most Soviet areas of Moscow, which are quite spread throughout the city, as very few of them are left. You can choose how much you are ready to live this Soviet life on a 5, 7 or 10-hour tour. Depending on the duration of the tour, you will see part or all of the places below:

If you want to extend the tour, you are welcome to do so by paying $20/extra hour in cash on the tour.

Time stands still in Red Square. The Red Square is the heart of Moscow (and whole Russia). Saint Basil's Cathedral will make your mouth drop. If it is from May-October, have a cocktail on the outside terrace and simply people watch! The massive square offers so much to enjoy.

Lenin's Mausoleum

The burial place of one of the most influential communist leaders in the world.

Revolution Square Metro Station

Rub the Soviet dog's nose for good luck and admire the 76 bronze sculptures, devoted to the passionate, strong-willed and patriotic Soviet people.

Poklonnaya Hill

The highest point in Moscow, where Napoleon waited for keys of the city.

All-Russian Exhibition Center (VVC)

With its giant arch, amazing fountain, and huge pavilions of different Soviet Republics.

Victory Park Metro Station

The deepest undeground station in Moscow and one of the deepest in the world.

Victory Park

For an open-air museum as big as 135 ha (1 350 000 square meters), Victory park sure doens't lack diversity. The park is dedicated to the Russian victory in WWII, and was laid out in 1995 in commemoration of 50-year anniversary of victory.

Stalin had planned for its construction already in 1941, being sure of victory from the very start of the war.

Greeting Hill

The highest points in Moscow (172 meters), where Napoleon waited for keys of Moscow in vain.

Triumphal Arch

Stunning monument consisting of 12 cast-iron columns, each 12 meters high, and weighing 16 tons. Built to mark Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.

Museum of the Great Patriotic War

In the city that is as much about wars as it is about victories, there is one essential stopover - the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (that's what WWII is called in Russia). Must-do for those wishing to understand Russia's past and look at the whole war from the different perspective - Russian.

The museum is not for the faint-hearted. Here you can see films about the partisan experience, the scenes that will haunt you forever (no subtitles, but they are not necessary).

We'll have a glance at Russian life of the XX century in the  Museum of Contemporary History , which houses bits of everything from Russian history of XXth century: from English club to a storage of Stalin's presents.

Memorial to the Holocaust,

devastating and breath-taking!

Unleash your inner spy. Highly recommended  Bunker-42 ,  Cold War Museum , explore the place where Khrushchev lived during the Cuban Crisis. Go down 18 floors to a gigantic bunker under Moscow that was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. Watch a short film about the severity of the Cold War. If you lived through the Cold War, you will hardly believe it is possible that you are in Bunker 42!

Wander through  Sparrow Hills  and climb up to the highest observation deck of Moscow with stunning views of all seven Stalin’s skyscrapers, including  Moscow State University . After that, experience the excitement of taking a  river cruise  on the Moscow river and catch the views of the Kremlin and Soviet times.​
