Do you need a COVID test before you travel and are you based in Brisbane? Do you ALSO need a doctor’s letter ? or is it just a COVID PCR Nasal swab test? or do you need a blood test as well  ?? Yes, it can be very confusing. Make sure you get precise instructions from your travel agent or airline.

Some airlines need a COVID nasal swab/PCR test before you can even be let on the plane, or a certain number of hours before you arrive in a country, some countries or airlines require a blood test as well. Sometimes a letter from a doctor is required in addition to a test result (sometimes called a test result certificate) to document that you have no symptoms of COVID at the time of the test  – a ” WELL-TO-GO ” letter.

At Dr Deb The Travel Doctor,  we can help you organise this  COVID  travel paperwork in Brisbane. We can even do it via telehealth in some circumstances.

If you travelling, and need a COVID PCR test and letter before departure (eg 72 hours before departure) this can be organised at this link by a local lab. Costs etc are on that link.

Note – if you have symptoms of COVID and go for a test it is FREE. You only have to pay for a COVID test if you are having it pre-travel. BUT some airlines will only accept test results from private pathology labs not from a hospital

The laboratory will text/email you the result so you will have the necessary paperwork for your departure.

PS you may wish to consider limiting your exposure to the general public for 2 weeks prior to your departure just to limit your chance of being exposed to viruses especially during the winter.

PS the USA state department has a website with some information about what COVID requirements are needed for each country, it is US-focused but a good place to start researching.

I am travelling to Taiwan on the 11/05/21. I require the pcr test for work travel purposes within 72 hours from departure date. When can I take the test?

Hi f you travel on the Tuesday you should have the test on Sunday ( yes do-oable), results back on Monday and fly tuesday. Testing lab is found here. https://www.snp.com.au/our-locations/?P=65 regards Dr Deb

Domestic travel within Australia

Domestic travel requirements are determined by state and territory governments. Check the websites of local health departments for information about travel to:

  • Australian Capital Territory
  • New South Wales
  • Northern Territory
  • South Australia
  • Western Australia .

Travelling overseas

The Australian Government does not currently have any COVID-19 requirements in place for travellers entering and departing Australia.

COVID-19 however continues to pose a health risk in Australia and overseas. We strongly encourage wearing masks and being vaccinated while travelling internationally. You should practice good cough and hand hygiene, and physically distance from others where possible.

Some countries, airlines and vessel operators may have COVID-19 travel requirements in place. Check the requirements of any:

  • countries you are travelling to, or transiting through
  • airlines or vessel operators.
  • Smartraveller website
  • Australian Government – international travel information .

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is important if you become sick with COVID-19 overseas. Make sure your insurance includes:

  • transit destinations
  • inclusions for COVID-19
  • other add-ons like cruise specific insurance.

Some destinations also require travellers to hold travel insurance as a condition of entry.

Cruise travel

Check with your cruise provider or travel agent for up-to-date travel requirements for your ship and destination/s. You can also contact the relevant state or territory government to find out if any requirements apply for your destination.

Outbreaks onboard a cruise

Cruise ships carry a higher risk for spreading disease compared to other types of travel. COVID-19, influenza, and other infectious diseases spread easily between people living and socialising in close quarters.

If an outbreak of COVID-19 occurs on your cruise, you may need to:

  • quarantine on the ship
  • disembark and follow the local rules in the state or territory or country you are in.

Before you travel, check the  Smartraveller advice on cruises . Contact your travel agent or cruise operator for specific information on their COVID-19 safety protocols.

Composite of Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and federal Health Minister Greg Hunt

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and federal Health Minister Greg Hunt were at odds for days before it was confirmed there had been no policy change. ( ABC News )

The fog of confusion over COVID-19 tests has ended right back where we started: Domestic travellers won't have to pay for PCR tests if required under a public health order.

But why, more than 20 months into the pandemic, it took days to confirm that nothing had changed , only raises more questions.

Instead of being nipped in the bud at the earliest opportunity, concerns over incoming travellers having to fork out up to $150 for a PCR test festered in the news cycle — and swelled — until a breakthrough on Tuesday afternoon.

Both the Queensland and federal governments criticised each other for delays in clarifying the funding arrangement, with Deputy Premier Steven Miles even hitting out at the media reporting on the issue.

However, in an ongoing health crisis — with an often time-poor and weary public — clear communication is crucial from both sides.

During Question Time in state parliament last Thursday, Deputy Opposition Leader David Janetzki put to the Premier that Queenslanders stuck over the border were now "being forced to pay $150 each for a COVID test" to enter the state.

"Why won't the government cover the cost for these Queenslanders who have been failed by the exemptions unit and who just want to come home?" he asked.

Rising to her feet, Ms Palaszczuk replied that some of these requirements were the same for other states and the government wanted to continue to keep Queenslanders safe.

However, she didn't query — or refute — the premise that people coming from interstate would have to pay for the tests.

Asked yesterday if she could have been more direct in her answer that day, her response was again, anything but direct: "In terms of the federal government, we just need to continue to work cooperatively, I don't think this has helped anyone".

The issue only gained more oxygen in the following days.

Quizzed about it on Friday at a press conference alongside the Acting Chief Health Officer, the Deputy Premier urged the Commonwealth to consider that these "tests are part of our wider health response so should be eligible for a Medicare rebate".

At a press conference on Monday, the Premier was asked how long travellers could expect to pay $150 for a PCR test.

She replied, "Until we get to the 90 per cent double-dose", adding the "figures are really encouraging".

A pile of test tubes.

The next day, questioned if the PCR test was effectively a "$150 toll on the border", the Premier said federal Health Minister Greg Hunt could "quite easily make it a Medicare rebate … with the stroke of a pen".

It turned out, though, the Commonwealth and states already jointly funded tests for people who require one under a public health order, such as a domestic travel requirement, in a deal agreed upon over a year ago.

The federal government's confirmation about the 50–50 arrangement to reporters on Tuesday afternoon — well into the saga — was welcomed by Queensland.

However, Mr Miles also said, "We just wish it had [been] a bit sooner" and accused federal government politicians  of an "orchestrated campaign to confuse people".

Part of the issue appears to be confusion over whether an "official certificate" for the negative result was required, rather than the standard text message system that's been in operation during the pandemic.

The federal government says a pathology test would only be charged for a patient requiring an official certificate.

However, Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski had already cleared this point up during an interview on ABC Radio last week, when he confirmed the border pass system would accept a screenshot of the text message.

During a brief doorstop yesterday, the Premier doubled down, calling for the "politics to stop", while also saying the "federal election means Queensland gets singled out".

"This is about the federal election. Why did the federal government want Queenslanders to get COVID for Christmas?" she said.

Ms Palaszczuk said she was unaware until Tuesday that people coming to Queensland would not have to pay for a COVID-19 test to enter the state.

On Twitter, Queensland Greens MP Michael Berkman wrote: "[The] whole $150 PCR test issue was a result of the major parties' election brain and refusal to communicate like adults."

"It'd almost be funny, if my office hadn't spent the past week taking calls from distressed Queenslanders [who were] wondering what was going on and how they'd afford it".

While the state and federal government are playing politics and blaming each other over delays, in the end it's the public who lose out.

We focus on patient care, not shareholder profits.

We understand the profound impact our work has on individuals and their families, and we approach our responsibilities with the utmost compassion, professionalism and commitment to excellence.

Improving Diagnostic Outcomes for the Future

We’re pioneering advances in digital reporting, automation and artificial intelligence that will revolutionise how we diagnose and report disease.

Histopath is the first laboratory in Australia to wholly integrate digital pathology into our routine workflow, enabling the necessary speed and accuracy for high-quality diagnosis. It’s particularly valuable for highly complex cases such as rare cancers and lymphomas, allowing sharing and co-reporting across Histopath’s pathologist network of expert groups.

We’re developing, training and validating AI-powered solutions that improve the detection and grading of cancer, as well as a broad range of diagnostic features in multiple tissue types. Beyond, it will enable highly accurate quantification, pattern recognition, and predictive analysis to improve our lab efficiency. This progressive approach holds immense promise for personalised treatment strategies.

We’re taking strides to automate our laboratory process, shifting human resources away from manual tasks to focus on quality and precision. It means tissue sections will be uniformly standardised – removing variability, improving our quality of testing and ultimately patient safety.

Our advanced image capture tech generates detailed 3D images of surgical tissue, precisely delineating sectioning areas and tumour status. Pathologists can view specimens in a 3D plane, enabling mixed-media pathology reports for comparable real-life inspection. This will be integrated into our LIMS soon, enhancing comprehensive pathology reporting, documentation and education.
